'Game Changer' Patrol Grades VP Debate

| | Comments (233)

The conventional wisdom seems to be that Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin might have won her debate against Democrat Joe Biden on style and likability points, at a minimum, but it wasn't a "game changer."

Perhaps it was not a game changer for the presidential election, but it was one for Palin's future. Things had gotten so bad for the Alaska governor that the buzz saws were out for Palin, mumbling about John McCain needing to replace her and predicting that she could no longer even get elected mayor of small town.

Thursday night's debate secured a place for Palin on the national stage. To many voters, she is a refreshing and accessible change from Washington policy wonks who come across to them as elitist and condescending.

"Bests and Mosts" of the VP debate . . .

  4. Question 1...

Were a black candidate to use a vernacular considered "folksy" for his culture or neighborhood, would that still be considered "folksy" after the third word ending in "shizzle"

    Question 2...

Did anyone see this between BillO and Barney?

He's trying to blame Frank for something that happened right after he took over the Banking Committee...if the Dems can be blamed, how did Bush escape blame for 9/11?

    Question 3...

I saw the Republican leadership saying that the bill they are considering is a better bill, not just because of FDIC increase, but because of other items, many considered pork. Why must they be bribed to act in the best interest of the country?

  9. Palin "won"? Really? Aren't we over the George W. "ah shucks, I'm just like you" phoniness? I figure that all those people who are going to fall for that were already in the McCain camp anyway. This race is over. The Palin brand is damaged because people know she's a dunce. McCain is a chicken with his head cut off and neither can distinguish themselves from their hero, GWB. 10. Following John McCain's concession of Michigan, an analysis of the Intrade.com Presidential Futures market state-by-state data shows Barak Obama inching closer to the 271 Electoral College votes needed to predict him the winner of the 2008 Presidential race. Investors now predict Obama will take Michigan. In addition, New Mexico is also now predicted to go to Obama. As of today, Obama is predicted to garner 265 Electoral College votes to McCain's 158 votes, leaving 115 votes to close to call.

These shifts leave only Florida, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Colorado, and Missouri in play. As of today, with the exception of Nevada and New Hampshire, Obama only needs to pick up one of the remaining states to be predicted the winner in November.

Obama loaded up with the Kennedy's, Kerry's, even Joe B his vp pick is so stuck up that it takes effort to listen to them. A dangit it's a very lucky thing that it's so close to Nov. and voting time, or else Palin would turn this thing completely around by her self---she comes across to regular speaking folk, she would mentally apeal to the border line bigot that is in some of us, this may not sound too nice, but I talk to a lot of diff, people from a lot of diff, walks of life, and out on the streets and that's the way they come across. 26. Come on, Craig. I know you're just trying to be provocative. Did Palin exceed her very low expectations? Yes, but it would have been hard not to exceed them. We cannot afford to have someone with such lack of substance in such a position of leadership. McCain chose her out of spite because he could not have the running mate he wanted. Well, the choice is coming back to haunt him and it reflects his reactive, angry disposition. To the extent the choice helps to bring him down, I'm glad to chose her.

  28. Couple thoughts about last night's debate based on watching a replay on CNN ...The replay of the the debate overlaid the simultaneous results of a dial group of undecided voters in Ohio.

    1) Biden consistently had higher ratings, especially among women participants. When comparing just women's responses, it appeared Biden had higher ratings than Palin.

    2) Palin's highest ratings appeared to be the result of her lining out specifics without bringing McCain's name into her answer. Her ratings fell when she appeared to be only reciting McCain's positions on issues.

    3) Palin's ratings consistently fell when a) she got "snarky" in her answers (women especially dialed her down), or b) when she tried to overlay how her experiences governing in Alaska translated to the national stage (men especially dialed her down).

    4) Biden did best when his answers were cogent statements on the specifics of how the Obama administration would address issues.

    Bottom Line:

    1) Both candidates did best when they outlined specific positions without comparing those positions to their opponents.

    2) . Neither candidate was rated favorably (especially Palin) when they attacked their opponents. In other words, finger-pointing and divisiveness was not rewarded.

    3) Palin did best when she appeared "Presidential." She did especially well when she was able to articulate specifics on positions without appearing to be only a puppet of the McCain campaign. The "soccer mom" image clearly was not as effective as appearing competent.

    Posted by: spike | October 3, 2008 12:04 PM

  29. Palin's performance last night if she swayed any undecided voters, everything so far says that is not the case. Craig your threshold for what you consider to be a win is in my opinion very low. Did she move McCain any closer to 270? Did she pass the commander in chief test?

Posted by: BrianInNYC Author Profile Page | October 3, 2008 12:07 PM

  30. I felt the debate featured the head cheerleaders for both campaigns without it being a paid commercial. I learned nothing new about either candidate or campaign and I expected Palin to give a good performance as did Biden. Both Biden and Palin looked down to read their notes, talking points, etc...not bad for the second bananas.

  36. I learned one thing from watching the pundits as they have become more entertaining than the candidates themselves. This has been one rich election season for the MSM and in hi-def, too.

On CNN, Soledad queried the focus group of undecided voters about how many thought Obama would win, most raised their hands...less for McCain. She asked how many people were going to vote for Obama, several raised their hand. Whoops...they are now out the focus group as they were supposed to be undecided. 41. I am 2/3rd done with watching the debate. Biden is in total command of the issues. Palin is doing better than I would have expected. My reaction to the VP candidates is as follows: Joe Biden, is the tried and true professor and educating the class about the world of politics and social policy. Sarah Palin is the ernest student who has been busy cramming for a verbal exam and doing passable work in giving answers to the questions, but no further. She is not delving deeper and often sounds like she is quoting memorized campaign literature rather than having a full grasp of the issues. She's studied hard, but is definitely intellectually weaker than the professor, at least at this moment in time.

So points to her on this. Craig is correct in that Sarah comes across as very human and likable, more down to earth. Joe comes across the higher intellect but done without demeaning or attacking his debate opponent. Overall, this debate is proving to be more interesting then the one with McCain and Obama.

  59. Jamie,

I actually think the first $350 Billion will do a lot and here's why...

By buying up the bad debt, we will free up the log jam in the credit markets.

By buying up the MBS, the Feds will now be owners of a lot of these problem mortgages and can start reworking them to keep people in homes.

The biggest problem right now with the real estate market is the excess of inventory. Builders have done well to cut production but the number of foreclosures has flooded the market still. If you can reduce the home seizures to mostly just investment homes in the short term, things will stabilize.

After that, the dropping of home values will finally stop and the recovery will begin...

  61. To unwind the mortage backed securities requires Plan B.

But the truth is, they had a choice. They could have chosen Plan B.

Plan B would have focused on the underlying mortgages that are the root of the problem, rather than simply bailing out the financial intermediaries. After all, the fundamental problem with the mortgage-backed securities market is the lack of information. With good information--however bad the news--liquidity would return to that market.

Bear, It solves the flow of credit, at least for now. That doesn't resolve the jobs problem. That is going to take time to work out of and because of this bill there isn't going to be investment money in industries likely to provide jobs. The estimate is that car sales alone will be off significantly. When combined with falling house prices that reduce equity lines for home improvements ... more jobs gone. Virtually every sector is going to take a hit.

One of my younger brothers just called me, said that he just made his final college payment for his son, asked me what to with, and if he has extra cash, told him to pay off all credit cards if he has any, to make an additional check for $50 to $100.00 and apply it to towards his mortgage int, to save and to offset the high price of living, he is lucky, my son Tom lost his job as trader for M F Globel, He is now going for his 2nd interview for a position that over 60 have applied for, my son is pissed because he is paying taxes on his unemployment check. With the new unemployment figures that are out now, you would think that someone would listen to them and repeal this very regressive tax that hurts the middle class, why won't the D's play hard ball against the R's about this Reagan tax? they haven't even mentioned it,I think that it would help the candidates that are running for congress and increase the #'s of D's, I f Rom Emanuel (the bull dog that he is) ran with this he would take over as leader of the hse?

  68. Yes, Pogo, that makes two of us that can't find much common ground with the AZ Republic editors. The name of the paper should be AZ Republican for all the support it gives the GOP and conservative views. The state itself is moving toward the left with a Dem governor and four of the eight members of Congress are Dems. In a perverse way, if McCain should win the WH, AZ will have a Dem senator. That's our silver lining should the skies turn to McCain or if they can steal enough votes, lock out enough voters, or send this election to the Supreme Court.

What im trying to do is to get is little creative, I have contacted tax property buyers---these buyers of property that went up on auction due to taxes not paid for years. One group of buyers have 28 lots in the chicago area, and are paying taxes now on these lots. Working with a mortgage co. in indana they are going to release 3 lots to us. We have a short list of 800 and above credit buyers for these new 3 flats that will be build, I will give them 10% equity (profit) to these people that will be approved when the credit is available for construction. The tax buyers will be paid an agreed price for the 3 lots at closing, this should go well and then work on the other lots that are left. I hope to build the SolarCrete homes on these lots and figure out how to get energy credit from the Gov.

  76. Blonde Wino,

With regards to your 1:34 question, I would give the markets about 6-12 months from the cash infusion to hit a true bottom. If you look at the historical value curve, you'd see that in every down turn, it is typically a 3 year process from start to finish. In this current cycle, Q4 2007 should have been the start of bottom. As we've seen, this was a unique period that has thrown them out of whack.

I have some clients who are investors and I prepared them for the market by cashing out every penny of equity they could muster. They are getting back into the market now because there are a ton of bargains.

  77. Jamie,

While it doesn't directly affect job creation, the bill will help because once the credit market frees up and business owners see they can get money to buy inventory and cover their payroll, they will see their revenue numbers stabilize and they will be in a better psychological position to consider hiring again.

If you aren't sure you will have the money to operate tomorrow, job or business growth is the last thing on your mind...

If memory serves me (quick what tv show used that line to describe that week's episode?) the first Central Bank was founded in the 1790's by an act of Congress. I think the same holds true for the current system and I suspect that were it in fact unconstitutional, someone's challenge would have been deemed as such by a federal court at some point in time.

If you read the wiki page, the purpose of the Fed is to prevent banking panics so even if it fails, I'm not sure why you would want to do away with it...

If my point is too subtle, indirect, perhaps you were distracted by the great words of Thomas Paine, "These are the times that try men's souls." words that mobilized a nation in former grave times, it seems you prefer the clarity of Obama's campaign theme, "Hope" and "Change." themes you deem worthy of a historian's scribe, but to me represent only the migraine of pretense.

Begone era, fancy that. It is by inclination and design I hark back to a distant era, the Edwardian age to be precise, which sometimes influences my writing, as to that fault, if fault it be, I plead guilty.

Be assured I take no offense if my words convey but little to you, yet wonder if my words were so obscure, why you would have labored to instill some meaning? Also why you would take the time to comment, which might be construed as a validation that my words aren't totally lost to reason.

You refer to things not in evidence: his "inimitable" weakness, a word around which you perform an awkward dance in order to label him cunning, too. And what was the "price being paid" and why with "ready money?" Are you sure you're not quoting from an episode of Deadwood?
    Posted by: Mike Farrace

I have been measured in my criticism of BO plucking words from his most passionate supporters in the MSM to bolster my point. I turned to BO's own ardent backers who publicly stated their "misgivings" regarding his "pugnacity" and "weakness." Do you expect me expurgate from my mind any criticism of BO in some display of penitent denial?

Also, I'm happy to state that I know nothing of Deadwood, and I suggest you will find the term "ready money" rife in literature.

The Fed undermines our currency through expansionary monetary policy, that makes every dollar you earn today worth less tomorrow. Champ, I don't know what you have in mind, but I'll try this...

After watching the early debates last year, I thought Hillary clearly performed best, she appeared confident, experienced and above all else strong. Most of the other candidates receded, shades of gray save one, Obama. I thought he was lacking by all measures compared to Hillary, but what most disturbed me was his timidity. Obama's own "rabid media supporters" questioned his "weakness," and lack of "inner toughness," and "spine," yet NOT ONE questioned Hillary's strength or tenacity.

Obama has assured all of us of of his willingness to meet with despots {without preconditions} like Iran's A'jax. To what end? Dialogue is swell, and I personally feel it's a keen idea, but I say again I believe A'jax when he says Iran will never stop their efforts to acquire nuclear weapons. It would strain all credulity to believe a weak man like Obama, could ever possess an orator's tongue strong enough to appease and quell Iran's ambitions.

In a hard and changing world that grows more perilous with each new centrifuge Iran adds, and each ounce of fissionable material gained. It is in these times, that we need more than a gifted speaker, we need a man whose demeanor and strength may well be tested. Obama, though well meaning is handicapped by a lack of grit and tenacity, and I fear he would be pulled by the gravitational forces of Pelosi, Clyburn, and the impulsive warmonger Kucinich, and certainly not to centrists like Hillary or Evan Bayh.

Truth be told, I see no felicity in the options confronting McC or BO regarding Iran.

PUMA - "Obama, a weak man for tough times."

Its not clear to me how civil unions make a mockery of your marriage. Civil unions don't have anything to do with your marriage. 105. Champ,

The Fed's actions don't have a direct impact on the rates of most mortgages. Fixed rates are tied to an index that is not determined by any Treasury or Fed Funds Rate. Most ARMS are tied to Libor. Just like dealing with Fannie or Freddie, whatever they determine the playing field to be, I just need to know how to lawfully operate within it.

Thanks for the lecture about how the Fed is just printing money and devaluing the currency. When you tell us next that the Sun rises in the east, I will be sure to get up early in the morning to see that.

This President has needed the devalue dollar to boost US exports because after the real estate bubble, that was the only thing left to offer any kind of growth in our current economic state.

If you don't want the Fed to govern the banking system, burn your check book.

If you don't want the Fed to be a lender of last resort, take your money out and put it in your mattress.

If you don't want an expandable money supply, don't complain that when the economy grows again that there isn't money in the system for you to do what you want to do...

Good God, the stupidity, it burns. Who cares if the government is massively incentivized to protect the value, even assuming the government cares which is far from clear to me since for this plan to do anything it has to buy at far above market value? They're going to be sold the shittiest parts of the shitpile by far because what would you sell to them if you were the banks? Think about it. This stuff isn't called toxic waste for nothing. MBS's may have something behind them, but much of what's going to be sold are massively internally leveraged instruments like first loss bonds, credit default swaps, and other noxious stuff that hardly even has a name. Much of it won't even be mortgage based, and that which is won't necessarily give clear title to the mortgage proper (you can sell different parts of the mortgage to multiple different MBSs). The 700 billion will probably be gone before Obama even gets in power, so you're not betting on what Obama will do, you're betting on what Paulson and Bush will do. Furthermore Wall Street is already saying 700 billion won't be enough. (So, ok, you might be betting what Obama will do with the next 700 billion or so.)"

That was in 1988, after Ronald Reagan’s two terms, when the economy was strong and the president was still popular. Neither remotely holds true now. The economy may not quite be in recession, but it certainly feels that way. House prices are tumbling, petrol and grocery prices are painfully high and wages have stagnated for years. The September meltdown of much of Wall Street has put an unexpected focus on the candidates’ grasp of the complex world of high finance. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan drag on. By rights, Mr McCain should be shuffling towards certain defeat. Yet the polls are still very close. The main reason is that the Democrats have picked as their standard-bearer Mr Obama, a man of great gifts but significant weaknes,

  147. After last week's debate between BO and McC I posted comments regarding Obama's "well documented" palpable weakness, and after all was said regarding the debate, the most telling "incident' happened prior to it.

With an economic maelstrom enveloping all, taking center stage over security and everything on the line, BO's debate handlers "gravest concern" was his need to, and I quote; "toughen up." Their prime concern was his "demeanor" and his need to display "grit" and "not" the issues, conversely the McC handlers prime concern was how he would answer questions on the economy. Obama, a man in the ilk of Neville Chamberlain, will chat with despots and deter them by the sheer strength of his charisma. It's a little like Oprah but more tragic.

Craig, I think you're awesome, but if Palin has secured for herself a place on the national stage on the basis of half a term as governor of Alaska and a term as mayor of a town of fewer than 10,000, and if a turn on the debate platform where she didn't drool was good enough to cancel out very poor performances in softball interviews, that may be the most depressing news I've heard about America all week. In the process of sending man into space, a few things were developed that you might recognize. The federal money infused into this research made those products possible.

Would they have been developed eventually without Federal money? Maybe, but it would have taken longer since there was no real need for the research.

Posted by Captain Not so Fantastic...

I'm offended that some of our "friends" in the political sphere are so goddamned scared of anything resembling an on-par relationship between gay couples and hetero couples, that they hide behind the civil "union" banner.

If heteros could show how they've been such sparkling examples of what good marriages are, I suppose their "defense" argument could hold up. Given how many of them marry, cheat, divorce, remarry, cheat divorce, it's a wonder that anyone would even step in a church for a wedding. And given the number of "heterosexual" married men who have hit on me over the years, I dare say the the "sanctity of marriage" is a total fricken myth.

Save your sanctimonious "making a mockery of [your] marriage" speech. Most people won't give a shit about your marriage. it's up to you to make sure it's not a mockery. Don't toss that responsibility onto others.

Obama has shown that he is a man of limited experience, questionable convictions, deeply troubling associations (Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers, Tony Rezko) and an alarming lack of self-definition -- do you really know who he is and what he believes? Nonetheless, he's got both a first-class intellect and a first-class temperament. That will likely be enough to make him president.

  171. Bear,

Fed as a lender of last resort? Then why the $700 billion bailout?

You may think that explaining the modern cause of inflation is stating the obvious, but I'll bet at least 95% of the population doesn't understand Fractional-Reserve Banking and the manipulation of monetary supply via interest rates. That's a shame because it's an extremely important concept.

Money supply can be expanded by the Treasury and without the Fed, which is an autonomous agency that operates in secrecy and not always, if ever, with the best-interests of the nation whose currency it controls. Banks, not the U.S. government, control this country. It's a national security issue. To top it all off, the Fed has the audacity to ask U.S taxpayers for more of their money to help resolve a crisis for which it is partly responsible.

As far as operating lawfully within a playing field determined by others, the same argument could be made for the slave trade- doesn't make it right.

If you recognize that the Treasury can control the money supply without the Fed, I don't understand the difference if the Fed acts on behalf of the treasury.
