Electoral Map Pins McCain Down

| | Comments (220)

It's getting to be an old story, but this close to Election Day it's worth noting that the latest round of state polls bring more bad news for John McCain. More on Poll Tracker.

Perhaps the best news for Barack Obama is that the Democratic presidential nominee has not had to play much defense in states that comprise the 251 electoral votes won by John Kerry four years ago. That leaves him free to concentrate on the one or two states he needs for 270 it takes to win -- and he's got many potential pickups to choose from. See Election Map.

McCain is pinned down in so many traditionally Republican states that he cannot find a clear and consistent electoral path to victory. Of all the problems with his running mate, Sarah Palin, the worst is that the Alaska governor has not been the firewall in conservative base states that McCain had hoped.

That same voice cries out in terms lifted to cosmic proportions: "He who lives by the sword will perish by the sword." 72. KGC: Glad to hear it! LOL

I'm not sure about Georgia. Problem is there are too many brain-dead Republicans that will be horrified at how close the race has become and turn out in force to vote for McSame.

The upside is early voting here has been remarkable. We were going to try to vote in our county today and couldn't because there was a 4 hour wait in the rain and we wouldn't make it to the early election site to make the 5 pm closing! (Yes it ACTUALLY rained here today.) Next week they will open up more early voting sites so it should be easier to do so. Hubby is poll-watching on election day so we need to vote early.

I'm concerned that even if Obama should pull off a victory in GA, the Republican and highly partisan Secretary of State will be sure to disenfranchise enough new minority voters to keep Saxby (Boy, do I suck!) Chambliss in the senate and keep Georgia a red state for McGrumpy.

It speaks volumes that Obama has actually made a red state like Georgia competitive.

I'll say one thing though, I do not see nearly the amount of McCain bumper stickers and signs in this Republican strong hold county that I live in like I did for Bush in 2004. The base truly isn't very enamored with McCain/Palin.

I find it intriguing that you think he hates white people. You are a black woman, right? Are you being defensive on the part of white people, or just angry at what you see as all-around hatred? I'm really interested in your reasoning - I found Rev Wright's preaching to be very un-settling.

Tompall has been one of my favorites, for a very long time. I think we blogged about him a year or so ago. What I will do is send out positive vibrations for him.

And one other thing, if you write another biography, please have it be Buddy Emmons. Or ghost write his autobiography, he has to be one of the finest instrumentalists ever. Do you know him? You must.

Yeah, we did, Bow -- he's something else. Got far less credit for Outlaw Country than he should have.

I wish I knew Buddy -- but don't. I'd love to write with or about him. But it's very hard to sell those books. Makes me sick, because so much music history is lost. Harlan Howard's widow wanted me to do a bio of him, and we couldn't find one publisher who cared about him or his story.

You have the background. Why don't you write up a proposal for either the Country Music Hall of Fame or the Grand Old Opry to sponsor a series of books for sale to the tourists?

If they won't bite, talk to Branson.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | October 24, 2008 8:48 PM

    91. I know those books don't sell. Not so you or him could make any money. One of the good things about the web and digital print is that books can be published as one offs, not like the old days of hundred thousand press runs.

Anyway Pedal Steel guitar is not popular across the musical spectrum like the piano is. It has been associated with mostly country music and Western Swing. It is rarely heard in mainstream pop music. However, if you go back aways ans listen to the Ventures, Sleepwalk...

Tony -- Here's a little "gay" observation. One of my best lesbian friends (a computer guru) was over the other day and I mentioned one of my favorite scenes in any movie. She started laughing and said, "Are you SURE you're straight? Every lesbian I know loves that scene!"

And what was the scene? Joan Cusak's meltdown at the end of the second Addams Family movie, where she goes ballistic over getting the wrong kind of Barbie doll one Christmas, and torching her parents because of it.

That scene is truly a joy to behold.

Unfortunately, my three-year old granddaughter might be a problem for her mom's volunteering. As it stands, Tracy and her (Christian fundamentalist) neighbor are trading off kids on election day, allowing for several hours if needed. Both voting for the Democratic ticket, I might add.

    125. Her remarks about fruit fly research point back to McCain's crack about the 3 million dollar earmark for bear DNA research. Which to the "base" we hear so much about would at first blush seem very wasteful indeed. But if you're one of the common folk they court so much, you probably don't know what a miracle a hibernating bear is.

When the bear goes to sleep, he doesn't consume any water for the whole time in hibernation. That means he has to recycle his water in a way doesn't have a build up of waste in his blood stream. Knowing how the bear does that has great implications for kidney research.

I won't list the other things the bear has to teach us, insomnia research comes to mind right now.

Anyway those answers are stored in the bear DNA. And studying that is what his base thinks is wasteful, and he thinks is funny.

    152. The aftermath of Ashley Todd’s story
By Jay Bookman | Friday, October 24, 2008, 04:50 PM
      The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
McCain volunteer Ashley Todd has now confessed that she made up the story about being attacked by a large black man who carved the letter “B” into her cheek.

The young lady has issues, and I hope she gets the help she needs. End of story.

But let’s talk in a little more depth about the eagerness and even glee with which some in the right-wing blogosphere jumped on that story and immediately claimed it as proof of their worst nightmares coming true. So much of that story was unbelievable from the very beginning, yet certain people wanted to believe it so badly that they ignored all the warning signs and launched into full battle cry.

Andy McCarthy at the National Review’s Corner responded with a post so embarrassing he has now taken it down so nobody can see it.

    158. The so-called "Christian right" is yet again showing their true colors. I know these people; in my teenage years I was a member of a fundamentalist church. They loved to speak in tongues, make prophesies, do "faith healings" and speak out about "love". But even though they would speak out on love, all the peoples they identified as "enemies" really showed them to be a beacon of hate. I have tangled with them for years, and every time I read anything about them, I still get so angry (and yet so grateful that I left the USA for Europe). I have no empathy for them; I consider them to be inherently evil.

Here is a prime example of their hate. What really scares me is how many idiots actually follow their lies and hate-mongering...

Christian right intensifies attacks on Obam

Terrorist strikes on four American cities. Russia rolling into Eastern Europe. Israel hit by a nuclear bomb. Gay marriage in every state. The end of the Boy Scouts. All are plausible scenarios if Democrat Barack Obama is elected president, according to a new addition to the campaign conversation called "Letter from 2012 in Obama's America," produced by the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family Action.

    160. Joe the Plumber was once Joe the Alaskan (are you surprised?)
      BY KYLE HOPKINS
      ANCHORAGE DAILY NEWS
ANCHORAGE — The star of Wednesday night's presidential debate used to live in Alaska.

And for once we're not talking about Gov. Sarah Palin.

Long before he was "Joe the plumber," Joe Wurzelbacher lived in North Pole and Eielson Air Force Base outside Fairbanks, according to Alaska public records. A family member says Wurzelbacher came to the state in the mid-1990s and stayed about four years — long enough to have the son who can be seen standing next to him in the now famous YouTube clip of Wurzelbacher grilling Sen. Barack Obama about taxes.

There is another announcement that "Joe the Plumber" may run for Congress in 2010. This guy is such a fraud. Not only was he lying about his intention to buy a plumbing business, but he wasn't even a plumber. Not only that, he presented himself to Obama as "undecided' when he is as right wing as the Repugs go. Furthermore, he has nothing in solidarity with the common working people and they know it. He is most certainly not a labor supporter or open to unionization of working peoples. FRAUD! Here's an article on his interest in running for Congress. Notice the "non-partisan" guy goes on the Laura Ingram show...

'Joe the Plumber' Mulling Run for Congress
@ 1:29 pm by Hill Staff
Joe Wurzelbacher, a.k.a. "Joe the Plumber," said Friday he may consider running for Congress in 2010, challenging longtime Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D) in the Toledo-area district.

"I'll tell you what, we'd definitely be in one heck of a fight," Wurzelbacher said during an appearance on the Laura Ingraham show Friday, "but, you know, I'd be up for it."

    161. Tom -- that's a freaky article. But I also know some fundamentalists and evangelicals who are not that way. It was the politicizing of that bunch that turned so many of them into crazies.

This all began back in earnest around the time Reagan ran for president....Falwell and that crowd. I wrote an editorial about it in 1980 for Colorado Woman, and if I can find it I'll email it to you.

Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | October 25, 2008 6:59 AM

    162. Right on Patsi, there are many reasons I admire you and this is one of them. I was also talking to anyone and everyone about the Moral Majority and how they were a threat to civil liberties and equality for women and gays/lesbians particularly. Not many thought it was a serious issue back then, but it seems many are starting to see them for what they are.

Hope you can find the article! I will send it around to my friends!

    172. patd, even at the liberal higher education institution I worked at, my colleagues and I would have to close the door every now and then just to make some politically incorrect commentaries. We were/are all liberals but sometimes the constant harping by the various campus constituencies went too far and we'd make jokes just to lighten the atmosphere a bit. I suspect this is human nature.

    173. Patsi, probably JMcC isn't insane, though I'd give the guy a pass if he really was, after all those years in captivity in Hanoi. I know I would totally break if that happened to me, and it would happen quickly. So for that, he does get a nod of respect from me. Even though I joke, I think a lot of his policies are insane, such as the idea that Iraq is a good war and we are winning the fight...

    175. ET,

We're already in the war. Nothing anyone does can change that. So, all our actions have to be forward looking.

It appears as if the corner is being turned so far as reduction of violence, and reestablishment of services is concerned.

Considering that Iraq was much like the former Yugoslavia--comprised of distinctly different ethnic groups, inclined towards violence against each other, the transformation is quite remarkable.

No one considered Saddam a benevolent dictator. He ruled with the constant threat of summary justice and violence. That is the governmental model that Iraqis were left with.

It appears as if they are developing alternative ways of governing. That is a process is being furthered by our presence.

Everybody wants us to be out of there; but, now is not the time to be trapped by campaign rhetoric. Let us leave thoughtfully and with consideration of the tremendous losses that have been experienced by all sides in this conflict.

I will send it to Jamie, dog. My "personal style" has remained the same for much of my life...by that, I mean not always accommodating.

One of the causes I took up when publisher of Colorado Woman magazine was that of a pregnant topless waitress at Sid King's in Denver. Sid said she was no longer attractive. My response:

"You fool. I can have 300 lesbians with signs picketing your strip joint within thirty minutes."

Tom, The reason I like this place so much is that it seems to have taken on the personality of our host. Even when the was is at its hottest, we eventually dial it back and become reasonably well behaved adults again until the next explosion.

It doesn't encourage non stop foul language or raging name calling or virulent personal attacks. Most of the posters are very bright, understand politics, and can hold up their side of a discussion well without to much rancor.

As one of the occasionally guilty parties, it's nice to know that there is still a place to be when I recover my slipped sanity.

And Ping adds - this increase is not supported by a false credit system. These are solid credits.
