Bill Clinton Needs Barack Obama

| | Comments (268)

Perhaps the most remarkable development in this unbelievable presidential campaign is that Bill Clinton campaigns today with Barack Obama because he needs it far more than the man he's endorsing.

craig_clintons.jpgObama kicked the Clintons all over town and is on the verge of winning the presidency without the former president or his wife, Hillary. Amazingly, the Clintons now need Obama more then he needs them.

I'll be the first to admit that I thought the Clintons were in charge of this election. I could not have been more wrong. Today in my hometown, Orlando, we will see Bill Clinton eat his crow and bow to Obama's phenomenal success.

So will I.

  2. Yep...I remember when you made HRC the early favorite because she had a HUGE $20 million war chest. Who knew Obama was going to be able to raise that much by snapping his fingers? Quite a season it was...LONG, too!
I know someone in the Obama campaign who said she could reserve some good seats for the million-people event in Chicago's Grant Park on election night...too many people for me!

  3. Craig,

Funny you say this, because my wife was on me tonight for sounding so pessimistic about Obama's chances. "I wish someone would start given him credit for all his done" was her comment. '"No one ever pats him on his back and says, you doing a good job"

Needless to say she was happy to point out your comments to me. Thanks a lot Craig. lol

  4. Hey, Craig!

My wife and I were (and are) huge fans of Hillary in the primary, and she vowed NOT to vote for Barack after the Pennsylvania primary. I was a loyal but unenthusiastic Dem who supported the party choice for president.

The convention speech and especially the debates changed everything for both of us, and we now believe our candidate might actually be the "change we need" as a nation.

Is it so hard to imagine that Bill and Hillary Clinton were affected in the same way? It's undoubtedly wrenching to make the kind of political and financial commitment Hillary made without a direct political payoff, but surely they are not immune to a patriotic desire to make this country better.

  5. Tomas, the same for me. I was very impressed by Barack Obama's convention speech and his cool demeanor and intellect during the debates. I had already said I would support Obama, but I was more confident than ever after those events that he would be a great President. Still a bit of sadness that Hillary isn't the nominee, but happy to support Obama.

Good to see you posting here by the way!

Consumers Feel the Next Crisis: Credit Cards

First came the mortgage crisis. Now comes the credit card crisis.

After years of flooding Americans with credit card offers and sky-high credit lines, lenders are sharply curtailing both, just as an eroding economy squeezes consumers.

The pullback is affecting even creditworthy consumers and threatens an already beleaguered banking industry with another wave of heavy losses after an era in which it reaped near record gains from the business of easy credit that it helped create.

It struck me that at an election time where many voters are not thrilled with the quality of the candidates (yes, I know, Brian, UB, and others!) that the quality of available experts is being talked about. It gives me hope.

Not that the Clinton's would pull their own October surprise to undermine the Obama campaign, but do they have the power to do so? There are a lot of us in the middle who are holding our noses to vote for Obama. I have no faith in the guy, but McCain is definitely a worse choice.

He is reshaping the political landscape of our country by the campaign he has run ( yeah Howard Dean), he will be our first black president and history has lined up to give him the opportunity to truly usher in a new era for America. I still laugh how people scoffed at Obama for discussing Reagan in the terms he did, but hindsight is proving his point!

"The refusal of the Los Angeles Times to release a 2003 ...videotape showing Barack Obama lavishing praise on a former PLO operative and supporter of Palestinian terrorism against Israel is showing not just traditional media bias, but has crossed the line into activism.

I am 100% in disagreement with you.

Take notice of what will happen after January 20th.
The Clintons have now campaigned hard for BO...
They will have that on their chest, eventhough BO neglected them, passed them the race card (with the help opf MSNBC and CNN), not even vetted HRC for the Veep spot and hasn´t kept his end of the bargain to help her out with campaign debt.... They kept on going for him
One mistake...Only one mistake he (BO) has to make aftyer his inauguration and it will cost him. Imeediately the media (parts) will come to ask what would HRC have done?

    Bill needs Obama. For what?
He has his credentials and two mega mega social gatherings. HRC is at her best (probably) in the senate. She is campaiginig hard for some members to be elected into the senate. This will reward her...
After the election the Clintons will lay low and probabaly wait......
    It won´t be that long....

  27. A joint appearance today with President Clinton as part of the Obama's closing argument, I believe, is a great idea.

I must admit, however, that I thought the pain of the primary loss justified him not bothering. I thought Obama was doing just fine without an overt and enthusiastic help from the president. I said as much on my blog, http://mrsmart.wordpress.com on September 29, when the president first agreed to campaign solo for Obama in Florida on October 2.

I, too, was a staunch Hillary supporter in the primaries. I became an Obama convert and have followed this phenomenon and blogged since.

What did it for me was seeing the enthusiasm in a middle school cafeteria where I had gone to caucus for Hillary. I had voted in the primary for her in the morning in our two step process here in TX. Turned out, I was just one of five Hillary supporters in a crowd of nearly 500, nearly 100 percent Obama supporters.

Despite the pre election polls which showed Hillary with a good lead, TX ended up either tied or close win for Hillary or Obama, depending on who one believed. I knew then we had something special.

Hillary Backers Decry Massive Obama Vote Fraud

"Already in Iowa, the Obama campaign was breaking the rules, busing in supporters from neighboring states to vote illegally in the first contest in the primaries and physically intimidating Hillary supporters, they say.

But Lynette Long, a Hillary supporter from Bethesda, Md., who has a long and respected academic career, believes Obama’s victory in Iowa and in 12 other caucus states was no miracle. “It was fraud,”...

“After studying the procedures and results from all 14 caucus states, interviewing dozens of witnesses, and reviewing hundreds of personal stories, my conclusion is that the Obama campaign willfully and intentionally defrauded the American public by systematically undermining the caucus process,” she said"

And this is what we continue to do (me included)!!!!
We continue to dictate what the major parties tell us despite what they do and have done.
Even if they lie to us , even if they continuously manipulate us......
Because they terify us with the notion that the other party will win if we don´t vote or try to elect the one that is forced upon us...
We do that and will keep on doing it until we wake up as a country and take back the country that is rightfully ours, and aren´t afraid to be called whatever by whomever

What happened to all those complains, what happened to all those cases brought up by lawyers. We need to just suck it up and go on, because if we continue to complain we are naggers and sore losers?
People say that (sore losers etc) because it is convenient for them to have it their way. We swallow it, because we are afraid to stand out and give our true meaning...

I dont agree that clintons "need" the current O surge.....they will benefit from it, of course.....I think they take the long view of politics and know how to play, by taking it all in stride........I think those who projected "emotions" onto the clintons were probably off the mark.........all told, this all falls into the very wide category of "We shall see."

    Patd

Thank you. You beat me to it. The Clintons has done everything possible to pass the torch as gracefully as anyone could expect while the press did nothing but carp about where is she? where is he?

Obama is darn lucky they brought her voters around. Doesn't anyone remember all the "third party talk". Quite frankly this column by Craig makes me growl, "I haven't voted yet". The PUMAs may have been a Republican hoax, but the women who believed in Hillary's issues are the big margin that Obama needs for his landslide.

What do the Clintons need from him? The Senate. With Kennedy's illness, there is a power vacuum and because health care will be a major Obama issue, I do believe the junior senator fromf New York will be standing there filling it.

The new President will have his hands full with Iraq, Pakistan, and a world wide financial melt down. The new Veep will be a big help with the Middle East part of that job.

Having a brilliant ex president to handle all the natural disasters and funerals will keep those off his plate. DC may be a one sun universe, but you can bet the planets nearest the sun will be Clintons Prime and Secundus.

  115. The story contrasts commonplace details of contemporary life with a barbaric ritual known as the "lottery." The setting is a small American town (population of approximately 300 and growing) where the locals display a strange and somber mood, from which unusual things can evidently be observed, like children gathering stones, as they assemble June 27 for their annual lottery. After the head of each family draws a small piece of paper, one slip with a black spot indicates the Hutchinson family has been chosen. When each member of that family draws again to see which family member "wins," Tessie Hutchinson is the final choice. She is then stoned to death by everyone present, including her own family, as well as both the young boys and young girls as a sacrifice to ensure a good harvest, according to the belief of the community.

wikipedia on the short story "The Lottery", by Shirley Jackson
"The Lottery" is a short story by Shirley Jackson, first published in the June 26, 1948 issue of The New Yorker.

The magazine and Jackson herself were surprised by the highly negative reader response. Many readers cancelled their subscriptions, and hate mail continued to arrive throughout the summer. In South Africa the story was banned. Since then, it has been accepted as a classic American short story, subject to many critical interpretations and media adaptations.

  123. Students reciting the pledge on Flag Day in 1899The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855-1931), a Baptist minister, a Christian Socialist, and the cousin of Socialist Utopian novelist Edward Bellamy (1850-1898). Bellamy's original "Pledge of Allegiance" was published in the September 8th issue of the popular children's magazine The Youth's Companion as part of the National Public-School Celebration of Columbus Day, a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's discovery of America, conceived by James B. Upham.

Bellamy's original Pledge read, "I Pledge Allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

The pledge was supposed to be quick and to the point. Bellamy designed it to be stated in 15 seconds. He had initially also considered using the words equality and fraternity but decided they were too controversial since many people opposed equal rights for women and blacks.

After a proclamation by President Benjamin Harrison, the Pledge was first used in public schools on October 12, 1892 during Columbus Day observances. This date was also significant as it was the dedication day of the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Bellamy thought that the pledge itself and the involvement of children across the country would be a fine show of national solidarity.

In 1923 the National Flag Conference called for the words my Flag to be changed to the Flag of the United States. The reason given was to ensure that immigrants knew to which flag reference was being made. The words "of America" were added a year later. The U.S. Congress officially recognized the Pledge as the official national pledge on June 22, 1942.

Students pledging to the flag in with the Bellamy salute. In 1940 the Supreme Court, in deciding the case of Minersville School District v. Gobitis, ruled that students in public schools could be compelled to recite the Pledge, even Jehovah's Witnesses like the Gobitases, who considered the flag salute to be idolatry. In the wake of this ruling, there was a rash of mob violence and intimidation against Jehovah's Witnesses. In 1943 the Supreme Court reversed its decision, ruling in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette that "compulsory unification of opinion" violated the First Amendment.[2]

Reciting of the pledge is accompanied by a salute. An early version of the salute, adopted in 1892, was known as the Bellamy salute. It ended with the arm outstretched and the palm upwards. Because of the similarity between the Bellamy salute and the Nazi salute, President Franklin D. Roosevelt instituted the hand-over-the-heart gesture as the salute to be rendered by civilians during the Pledge of Allegiance and the national anthem in the United States, instead of the Bellamy salute. This was done when Congress officially adopted the Flag Code on 22 June 1942.

  132. mornin' all.

Craig, I usually agree with you, and may yet on this post, but I just wonder what Bill and Hillary need Obama FOR. Bill's no worse off than before the election - Hillary would have been better off had she won, but hey, sh*t happens. She's still a senator - arguably a much more formidible force in the senate than she was before the primaries. Maybe a cabinet post or SCOTUS appointment is a possibility, but I'm not holding my breath. So I ask you, what do they need Obama for?

Ping, I think you're micro analyzing who's good for business at the expense of the broader view of who's better for the economy that allows business to flourish. McCain has changed his tune on the economy from irresponsible tax cuts to perpetuate the tax cuts despite every indication that the tax cuts he has embraced and made part of his economic be all and end all have weakened the economy and hence the business climate. The jobs argument is crap - the gains Bush (read McCain now) touts as the result of growth in the economy as a result of tax cuts have evaporated with the "growth" they produced. You are mischaracterizing Obama's proposals - which are essentially to return to the tax sructures that existed under Clinton, and which were less onerous for business than under Reagan. Problem is, the wonderful results for business of the policies you think McCain will continue to embrace are not borne out by results in the economy. If past performance includes endlessly repeating stupid catchphrases that are just meant to appease voters and choosing incompetents for positions of importance, McCain's your man. If there's a closed mind here on McCain, it's yours.

  133. The Obama team doesn't react well to interviews where tough questions are asked of them. They think they should be subjected to questions asked by the hard hitting news anchor Brian Williams who was more interested in fluff, Obama's attire.

Since we like to site polls every 5 minutes here, here is something that has to have the Obama supporters scratching their heads. With all the big hoopla, the strong bias support of the news media, his coffers over flowing with cash, why does does Gallup only have Obama him up by 2 points? 10% of undecided have not committed.

Noticed you quoted the "likely voters traditional" rather than what Gallup considers the more realistic with this election of "likely voters expanded" with a six point lead

  139. Sturge, the guys who were Jehovah's Witness. had rules about birthdays and holidays etc...We would have a potluck at work for someone's birthday and they wouldn't take part in it, because it was against their religion. Then, during our 2nd break one of them would eat a piece of birthday cake. I would say, "Jose, that cake is a birthday cake. It was brought for our birthday potluck. The one you couldn't participate in. I thought that was against your religion to eat birthday cake?" He would tell me, "That was for our 1st break. Now that birthday cake has no meaning. I can eat it." I thought he was quite hypocritical about it. I asked another guy/fellow Jehovah's Witness about it and he simply said, "Jose is a bad man."

  140. Brian,

I told you ages ago that McCain just might not carry his home state. It really comes down to the Hispanic vote and whether or not the older folks who spend the winter there vote in Arizona or in their home states by mail.

Yep. Helen likes to go to these big Washington events and Craig is often her escort.

Of course he is running out of limbs to break, so they probably should avoid the cocktail circuit once the book is published. :-)

  148. Pogo, et al.,

This extract from Federalist Papers 68 seems to support the VP as being a legislative member while not being a legislator:

"The Vice-President is to be chosen in the same manner with the President; with this difference, that the Senate is to do, in respect to the former, what is to be done by the House of Representatives, in respect to the latter. The appointment of an extraordinary person, as Vice-President, has been objected to as superfluous, if not mischievous. It has been alleged, that it would have been preferable to have authorized the Senate to elect out of their own body an officer answering that description. But two considerations seem to justify the ideas of the convention in this respect. One is, that to secure at all times the possibility of a definite resolution of the body, it is necessary that the President should have only a casting vote. And to take the senator of any State from his seat as senator, to place him in that of President of the Senate, would be to exchange, in regard to the State from which he came, a constant for a contingent vote. The other consideration is, that as the Vice-President may occasionally become a substitute for the President, in the supreme executive magistracy, all the reasons which recommend the mode of election prescribed for the one, apply with great if not with equal force to the manner of appointing the other. It is remarkable that in this, as in most other instances, the objection which is made would lie against the constitution of this State. We have a Lieutenant-Governor, chosen by the people at large, who presides in the Senate, and is the constitutional substitute for the Governor, in casualties similar to those which would authorize the Vice-President to exercise the authorities and discharge the duties of the President."

I did not find anything more to the point than the above extraction.

  151. How will Obama, should he be elected, prevent business, big or small not past his tax increases onto the consumer, or reduces their work force, increasing the unemployment rate? Does any sound minded individual believe that business is going to sit back and incur even more loses during a economic turn down? The tax cuts he is promising you will be swallowed up by the increase cost of everything. Then when 2010 rolls around with the expiration of the Bush tax cuts, you'll lose even more money. Have you noticed the figure used to signify who is rich has been dipping: $250,000, then $200,000, and recently old gaff Joe just the other day reduced it to $150,000. They only have to go another $75,000, and they will be right back to where Obama first began. It is there in black & white for all to read.

  152. "Bill Clinton eat his crow "

    Sure he will, lol

"the verge of winning the presidency without the former president or his wife, Hillary"

The Clintons have been a major reason the Democratic party is as unified as it is. They worked hard to bring their supporter around to support Obama.
    Yes, Obama needs them.

As to Bill campaigning with Obama ? Well It fits their strategy. They play the game at a very high level and they have a plan of some sort. What it is I'm uncertain but does involve using their network they developed during the campaign to promote and expand Hillpack.
I have found the emails from the Clintons interesting in what the include and what they don't.
