Ayers Flap Drove Powell to Obama

| | Comments (273)

Colin Powell's disdain for John McCain's presidential campaign tactics seems to have clinched his decision to vote for Barack Obama, announced today on NBC's "Meet the Press."

powell_obama.jpgIn an impromptu post-show session with reporters outside the NBC studios, Powell gave a lengthy, detailed and impassioned response when asked a broad question about the influence of the campaign's negativity on his endorsement. It was a clear indication that McCain's attacks backfired with one of his party's leading figures. Or, such concerns at least provide a principled-sounding excuse for Republicans who want to distance themselves from McCain for other reasons.

Although he cited other reasons for abandoning his own party's nominee, Powell said that the timing "was driven" by McCain's recent attacks on Obama's character. He seemed most fixated on efforts to portray Obama as "un-American."

Powell said he was especially troubled by McCain's attacks on Obama's past relations with former Weather Underground member Williams Ayers. "Suggesting that Obama has some sort of terrorist inclinations was over the top, beyond just good political fighting back and forth."

  6. Hi Katherine,

If you didn't see it---yesterday's NYT--- an honest article which offers a practical proposal to the housing crisis that continues to be ignored.

"Shouldn't We Rescue Housing?" by Joe Nocera

"Pass a law tht encourages homeowners with impaired mortgages to forfeit the deed to their lenders but allows them to stay in the homes for 5 yeras, paying prevailing market rent. The law would force the lender to accept the deed and the rent.

After 5 years the homeowner turned renter would have the right to but the home back, at FMV, from the lender."

Plan proposed by a Daniel Alpert, partner of Westwood Capital, a small investment bank.

  7. Brian: You can already see it on some of the blogs, but my guess is that many conservatives will overlook Powell's serious critiques of the McCain campaign and chalk the endorsement up to race.

Even where Mr. McCain still leads among "likely voters," the polling results show Mr. Obama leading by as much as 34% (in Iowa and North Carolina) among "early voters." Even Georgia, where Mr. McCain holds an 11-point overall lead in Survey USA's polling, Mr. Obama is ahead by 6% among early voters.

  16. Gen Powell showed himself as a patriot rather than a partisan. I hope all the people who have criticized him as being a weak-kneed, complicit follower, listen to his MTP appearance.

I've made no secret of my admiration for Gen Powell; without a doubt he is one of my five favorite soldiers of those whom I've known personally.

  17. North Carolina -

Across the state, Democrats showed the most first-day enthusiasm. Of the nearly 114,000 first-day voters, 64 percent were Democrats, 21 percent Republicans and 15 percent unaffiliateds.

African American turnout was up significantly. Black voters, who make up about 22 percent of registered voters, were 36 percent of Thursday's early voters.

In 2004, blacks made up 18.6 percent of voters.

Experts estimate that Barack Obama needs a black turnout in North Carolina of between 22 percent to 23 percent to carry the state. No Democratic presidential candidate has carried North Carolina since Jimmy Carter in 1976.

In Bernalillo County, about 2,000 people had cast ballots in the first two hours of voting Saturday at 15 polling sites, county spokeswoman Liz Hamm said.

  23. People often forget just how much the modern military has changed. We have gone from "If the Army wanted you to have a wife, they would issue you one" to very married soldiers and family men.

Since military tends to marry military, there are a lot of young Barrack Obamas growing up on the military bases of the nation with just about every conceivable racial composition.

End result: You have young families with all the problems of today's young families a large percentage of which are racially mixed. They are right of center politically with a sense of duty and love of country. The old McCain would have been a natural fit, but this far right, racist turn drives them away and the Powell endorsement is a very big thing.

There are huge sections of a lot of newly pink southern states where there will be a surprising number of Obama votes. Fort Benning, GA anyone?

Take Judie Almond, 68, from the small rural town of Wadesboro, an hour's drive from Charlotte. She is a true social conservative. Resolutely anti-abortion, she fears that the country is on such a slide that homosexual marriage will not only soon be lawful but might become mandatory. 'We can't become a homosexual nation,' she said with passion.

But Almond's most colourful biblical language and ire is now aimed firmly at Wall Street, not gays. The credit crisis has trumped all else in her world-view and she blames McCain's party. 'The Republicans have made such a mess. And the salaries these Wall Street people were getting? It's an abomination. It is sinful,' she said. She is almost certain to vote for Obama.

He also emphasized the economic crisis and Mc Cain's poor response to it. He slammed the party for moving too far to the right. He said that he thought Obama would make better Supreme Court nominations. Need I go on? I think Powell has preferred Obama for months, that the rumor that he was "on McCain's shortlist" for VP around GOP convention time was a plea to Powell to stay quiet through the convention and not embarrass his old friend,McCain.

Powell did not come to this decision lightly.

And what a powerful time to roll out the endorsement. (Any time is good in my book!)

Had not planned to post about it today. But since you brought up the subject.

There is no problem with General Powell. He has the Constitutional requirements for POTUS. He would have no reason to hide his BC from the public. Why is SoetorObama hiding his? Because he has something to hide. Citizenship laws are far more complex than most people realize. It should not take lawsuits to get a look at a BC. Everyone I know has had to show a hardcopy BC numerous times to prove date and place of birth. He has a "hidden" past -- an authentic BC would reveal info he has to keep secret.

  54. Solar: agree: there are fence sitters who are genuinely conflicted.

Powell informs them: loyalty is good. But the Republican party you are seeing on display with this campaign is what you are going to get.

It is not the Republican party that I joined, or that Christopher Buckley joined.

It's not the party of moderates, or small business.

It's lost its bearings -- witness the ugliness of the campaign and its emphasis on scaremongering (Ayers, socialism, income redistribution, big government) and shortage of solutions.

    Look beyond loyalty.

"If he is a US Citizen under these circumstances his Oath of Allegiance must be on Record somewhere. If it isn’t he is not a US Citizen.

[§338-17.8] Certificates for children born out of State.

    (see link)

So by that section he could get a certificate claiming Hawaiian birth even if he was physically born outside the US but the Place of Birth would need to be correctly recorded.

Understand, the Hawaiian Authorities may be able to Issue a Hawaiian Birth Certificate under these circumstances but they cannot make you a US Citizen. A child born in Kenya to and underage US Female and a UK and Colonies Citizen in 1961 was not born a US Citizen under any US Federal Law, under British Law, or International Law. The only way such an Individual could be a US Citizen in terms of the XIVth Amendment, or any Statute, or Code of US Federal Law is by Naturalization."

Susan Collins is the classic moderate to liberal Republican ... financially cautious but socially liberal. In the era of the fundamentalist driven GOP she became something of an anachronism. It would be a shame if she were defeated because of an Obama landslide with coat tails.

  91. Today the opposite happened, thanks to some foresight from Planned Parenthood. Collins Watch broke the story in Maine.

In a precedent-setting move with national ramifications, Planned Parenthood has broken decisively with Sen. Collins, and will endorse Rep. Allen's bid to unseat her.

The decision to intervene in the race--coming from the nation's most important and respected pro-choice organization--sounds an urgent warning to pro-choice Collins supporters, admonishing them to take another look at the junior senator's record.

And because Planned Parenthood backed Collins in 2002 (and frequently endorses Republicans) its support for Allen represents a serious, nonpartisan challenge to Collins' carefully-cultivated "moderate" image.

  93. Oh good -- agreeing with Chef Sheila and Mr D too. (Had not read far enough upthread.)

From Congresspedia on Susan Collins: no wonder she is popular in Maine. She is good on the issues (IMO):

"In the U.S. Senate, Collins played a role during the Senate's impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton, when she and fellow Maine Senator Olympia Snowe sponsored a motion that would have allowed the Senate to vote separately on the charges and the remedy. When the motion failed, both Snowe and Collins subsequently voted to acquit, believing that while Clinton had broken the law by committing perjury, the charges did not amount to grounds for removal from office.

Labeled as a moderate or liberal Republican, Collins often breaks with her party. She voted against the ban on partial-birth abortions, the restrictions on travel to Cuba, harsher punishments for drug users, and she opposed amending the U.S. Constitution to prohibit same-sex marriages. On taxation and trade she has taken a more moderate line, voting against some trade agreements, most recently CAFTA. In 2001 she was one of only four Republicans to vote to limit the reduction in the top tax rate and to increase the amount of tax relief for those at the bottom of the income scale. In 2003 she was the only Republican to vote in favor of spending a portion of the tax cut reserved for upper-income payers on the building of hospitals in rural areas. She has voted against drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and in favor of increasing the average mile-per-gallon requirement for vehicles."

  109. My final shot at Powell:
Powell may have been the single most respected general in Vietnam. I was a soldier there, a contemporary , if you will, although I never met him nor served directly under him. I have know a few men over the years who served with him and I have heard them tell me stories of incredible courage and inspiration they witnessed firsthand regarding Powell.
Now we jump to 2000 and we hear Powell , totally behind Cheney and Powell, 100% on-board. Then I recall with great clarity the morning Powell went to the UN and showed grainy "evidence" that WMD were on the move. He had become a pitchman for Bush to go into Iraq...and even today on MTP, he defended his position from back then, blaming it on "intelligence". Anyone who had even a passing interest in politics then surely remembers that there WAS great outcry that WMD did not exist, and that Hans Blix was not allowed to finish his job once it became clear thjis entire thing was a hoax upon the US citizenry. Here we had Powell , ever the good soldier, spewing lies on national TV about WMD. Later he became irritated because it became clear he had just been another Bush/Cheney patsy.
My sincere admiration and total respect for General Powell evaporated that morning at the UN.
He's voting for Obama. Well, he got that part right, at least.

It seems like just yesterday that the party of Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy was talking about income equality and civil rights and worker protections and going to bat for the little guy, the blue collar laborer, the everyday Joe the Plumber.

Now, the well-to-do elites who run the Democratic Party — and their surrogates — greet these people with brickbats. They insult them, talk down to them, and even try to destroy them. 123. My first knowledge of Powell and Schwarzkof (sp?) was the first Gulf War, and I thought they were great.

Then after the war, they met with the Iraqi's in tents in the desert. The Iraqi's played cute and arrived late etc, and these two generals let them get away with it, and I thought, what are you guys thinking? What bozo's!

Then they testified to Congress that our soldiers would not tolerate serving with gays, and I thought, If soldiers will shoot to kill the enemy, they'd better damn well obey orders to get along with gay comrades. These generals just don't like gays - how dare they say our soldiers wouldn't obey orders!

Then they went before Congress to say basically they had no respect for their commander-in-chief, Clinton because of his womanizing! I thought, you sons-of-bitches! What hypocrisy, what dis-honesty, what arrogance - what fools!

And still when Powell went to the UN and showed how Saddam was going to melt the world, I believed him.
What kind of fool am I? If he had just resigned or even spoken up more about going to war, I might have held on tosome shred of respect for him.

Maybe he has had enough time to think over some of the pusilanimous stands he has taken - and that's why he finally spoke up and criticized republicans. Whatever his reason, he's still a failed public servant in my opinion, altho I'm glad he finally did something right.

  143. The parallels between Obama and Bush are many, and have been identified by myself in this forum, as well as by many others in countless other forums.

Powell LIED TODAY on national TV, by the way, in stating that Obama "has always been a Christian", which contradicts statements Obama himself has made on record.

  145. "Check please!"
    "Waiter, check please!"

Looks like this poster could at least have come up with a new phrase, instead of stealing an old one from me.

  146. If McCain would listen to Powell it might actually save his campaign. Instead, McCain has been listening to a campaign staff that has done him a great injustice.

  147. Has Obama expressed an intent to reinstate those rights which were stolen under the Bush administration, such as Habeus Corpus and Posse Comitatus? Has he expressed an eagerness to lobby Congress to repeal the FSMA of 1999, the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the Bankruptcy Reform Act of 2005 and the Patriot Act? Where does he stand on FISA?

  148. Ken if the entire GOP would listen to Powell they might actually not be spending the next decade out in the cold (not that's that a bad thing mind you)

  149. If the GOP wanted to win this election they wouldn't have nominated McCain. Wake up.

  151. I hate when pundits say it's the economy driving Obama's lead, that's not exactly right. It's how both candidates have reacted to the crisis that is the real factor.

  152. The is the photo Powell referred to in his endorsement:

  153. If the gop wanted to win this election they wouldnt have had McCain pick Palin........lol

    Posted by: sturgeone | October 19, 2008 6:49 PM

  154. the gop powers-what-be were watching the primaries really closely.......they asked themselves, "Now, who is doing the absolute WORST here?" (That was actually a VERY hard pick to make, but they perservered) Having watched really closely looking for the absolute worst campaigner.........they caught Mac totin' his own luggage thru the airport by himself, and though it was tough picking between the cross dresser, the mormon and the baptist preacher......really tough......they decided that Mac had what it took and they picked him.........you shoulda heard the howls of laughter coming outa that room right before they called old Mac......and then they had him pick Palin and they were all each and every one ROFLTFAO.......

    Of course he does.

Under the current Two-party system, you, as an American citizen are afforded two supposedly-viable options from which to select your next President. One of those choices is a representation of the last 8 years of failed public and foreign policy spearheading an inept campaign. If you buy into the fallacy of our so-called representative democracy but are rational enough beyond that, you are now left with only ONE viable OPTION from which to choose. How convenient.

  159. As for Colin Powell, it is far too little and much too late. He has never apologized for his participation in GWB's tremendous blunders, Nor has he admitted to error. His endorsement is only relevant to the koolaid drinkers. His anger at his former aid, Lawrence Wilkerson's public dissent and disagreement with the Bush administration says more about the man than any public endorsement 3 weeks before the election.

  160. Does anyone really believe that Obama and Ayers "NEVER TALK" about what is wrong with America ? Does anyone really believe that Obama and the Rev Wright in 20 years never talk about his brand of preaching. Does anyone really believe that Michelle never talk to Ayers or the Rev Wright about ways to change American. They are both weil educated and I am can't believe they never had a conversation about how we can "FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE AMERICA"

I GUESS ALL THEY TALK ABOUT WAS THE "WEATHER"

  161. I think the GOP knew it had no bench. That after Bush, the country was totally sick of them and close or landslide, it was a Democratic year. They needed a sacrificial lamb to get through this election while they tried to hang on in either the House or Senate and groom for 2012.

Unfortunately, they were expecting Hillary and weren't ready for a phenomenon like Obama. Now they are stuck with the blame for a loused up war, a massive financial crisis, and a major generational shift that could keep them on the outs for 8 to 16 years.

  163. I think he's in the dark........he must have stepped on quite a few big toes along the way to have wound up in this position he's now in, instead of running around as a very heavy-weight senator, (like say, Hillary)...........They managed also with the one arrow to shaft Lieberman and Lindsay Graham as well, with the taint......any other gop shafted in this set-up?
