A 20-year-old white Republican volunteer says she was mugged at an ATM, claiming that her black assailant carved up her face after seeing her John McCain bumper sticker, and both presidential campaigns get involved.
UPDATE: McCain Supporter Confesses To Making Mugging Story Up
McCain and his GOP running mate, Sarah Palin, reportedly called the Texas woman, who was visiting in Pittsburgh where the incident occurred. In an official statement the McCain campaign says, "We're shaken up by this. It's sick and disgusting."
Barack Obama's campaign also released a statement, saying: "This is a horrendous act of violence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought to justice."
This is one of those moments, like Obama's encounter with "Joe the Plumber," that could take on a life of its own as the Republican ticket runs out of time for an October surprise.

Craig - You do a wonderful job of throwing out a high level message with very strong underlying currents – that can really stir the pot. If this is your intent then today you get an A+++
What are the hidden messages?
Two themes for today’s post are
1 Unintended consequence
2 Self Fulfilling prophecy

Like the Duke rape fiasco and Tawana Brawley, I'll have to see some proof about this story. If true, it's awful, If not, it's awfully convenient.
But it underscores an article I was just reading in Vanity Fair, about Rupert Murdoch. It tells about what a gossip Murdoch turns out to be. He now hits the "fashionable tables" and loves to spread rumors. One of them was a tale about a Hillary Clinton confidante being a part of an online porn company. Turns out the story was bogus, but he kept spreading it around. I remember hearing that bizarre little tale. It didn't last long, but it was there long enough for me to remember hearing it.

More good news for McCain -
TALLAHASSEE -- Barack Obama has opened up a 49-42 percent lead over John McCain in Florida, according to a new Miami Herald poll showing the Democrat earns high marks on the economy and is drawing significant support from the swing voters who decide elections in the nation's largest swing state.
http://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics/florida/story/739225.html
Here's another one -
A new St. Petersburg Times/Bay News 9/Miami Herald poll shows Sen. Barack Obama leading McCain 49 percent to 42 percent in this state McCain cannot afford to lose. The biggest factor? Less partisan independent voters moving to Obama by a ratio of more than 2-to-1.

Very sad story, but if the McCain campaign is going to spin this one incident into one of their fear initiatives, wouldn't the logic be that the country will have a riot if Obama doesn't win & voting for McCain would be bad for America?
SNL was awesome. I still wonder if Hil'ry wouldn't have been the nom if their hadn't been a writers' stike?Once SNL started showing how the media was treating Obama with kid gloves, Hil'ry started doing better in the primaries.

More avenues -
"But then there’s the B. It’s backwards. Maybe the mugger was a dyslexic black Obama supporter? "
Or
" “I’m a cop - 8th year now - and this McCain supporter attack just didn’t pass the “smell test” as soon as I read about it.
At this point, I’ll guess the shiner was inflicted either by a friend willingly as part of this hoax or a boyfriend in a domestic dispute.
The “B” is far to shallow and clean to be taken seriously. Reminds me of the stab wounds that a “hero” would get when fighting off a phantom attacker - far to superficial to have been done in what is a fairly violent encounter.
Either way, I’m voting McCain"
Posted by: Atticus Finch | October 24, 2008 7:49 AM

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aZRWfr8j_IXc&refer=worldwide
Hey Mr. Obama I got an idea lets increase the tax rates.
Whoever it was on here that has that apple tree, you better hope for a great harvest, that may turn out to be your only source of income with the foolish Obama tax policy. Those of you who think Obama's tax ceiling of $250,000 will not affect you are over looking one important factor. The pool of individuals who make over $250,000 is dwindling with this world wide recession. When that pools dries up he will lower the threshold, or do as Bill Clinton did promise a middle class tax cut, but after he got in office he did not fulfill his campaign promise.

Putting it in perspective is their historical record on endorsements, and the content of those 'works' of editorial largess:

I like, especially, their endorsement of Wendell Willkie over Roosevelt in 1940. And Dewey over Truman. And, traditional Democrats will question their choice (twice) of Eisenhower over Stevenson. Oh, well.

From the "You can't make this shit up file" -
Palin’s Makeup Stylist Fetches Highest Salary in 2-Week Period
Who was the highest paid individual in Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign during the first half of October as it headed down the homestretch?
Not Randy Scheunemann, Mr. McCain’s chief foreign policy adviser; not Nicolle Wallace, his senior communications staff member. It was Amy Strozzi, who was identified by the Washington Post this week as Gov. Sarah Palin’s traveling makeup artist, according to a new filing with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday night.
Ms. Strozzi, who was nominated for an Emmy award for her makeup work on the television show “So You Think You Can Dance?”, was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to the records. The campaign categorized Ms. Strozzi’s payment as “PERSONNEL SVC/EQUIPMENT.”

Jack, whether this will take on a life of its own is a good question - and the jury is still out on that one - right now it's still in the current news cycle - after the security video has been reviewed we'll hopefully know whether it's real or a hoax and know even more about it than Phil Berg knows about Obama's citizenship. Get back to me on Monday if it's still in the news after the Steelers play the Giants on Sunday afternoon to see if Craig's speculation that it might take on a life of its own is correct.

Question.
When have any of you Lilywhite Limousine Intellectual Liberals (LLIL) types ever been to a Black barbershop, or a Black church? In the Black community there are 2 places where one goes to discuss and learn of community affairs. They would be the local Black barbershop/hair salon, and church, apparently from the discussions I have observed on this blog that is another place you avoid. But if you did go you would see and hear several things occurring all at once. 1. Obama is receiving 98% of the Black vote because he is Black, on of us. Policies and their consequences are not fully understood. Well who can blame them, as they are all painted with a very large broad rose color brush. 2. Although Obama is celebrated as the first Black who might become President, he isn't fully embraced nor do we see him as some sort of Messiah, as some would have you believe. 3. Unbeknown by most LLIL's, not everyone who is Black is poor, uneducated, a crackheads, lazy looking for a handouts. Something that receives very little attention, under Bush's term in office there has been more wealth created within the Black community than ever before, and a number of us are fearful that this wealth which we worked so hard to obtain will start to disappear under an Obama administration whose campaign promises are murky at best.

A backwards "B" when someone is sitting on your chest pinning your hands with his knees? At 6'4", remarkable close to Obama's 6'2", wouldn't her arms be bruised? A medical exam would have proven that but she refused treatment. Hmmmnn. A backwards "B" with a dull knife? Leaves no deep scarring even though it would be harder to cut the skin? And what a neat scar too. Not one done in the haste of a robber on the run. A backwards "B" carved so delicately it barely leaves a scar? What a skillful and considerate robber. Repeatedly punched but only one black eye? No other visible bruising, no scratches from her instictively turning her face away from a dull blade? Hmmmn. And the McCain campaign contacts her at about the same time the story breaks? Hmmmmnn. Sounds like they are now reaching the "Joe-line" the victim of big black man crowd now.
Nice try but the backward "B" blows the premise. Was it done in a mirror that makes it look like a forward "B" in the reflection? The only other crook in this whole story is the mainstream media that runs it before all the facts are in. Ridiculous..

I've got several professional well to do black friends and business associates. They are all voting for Obama mainly because he's black and because the republicans have offered up such a poor alternative. They don't believe in either intellectually but given the choices they will vote to put a black man in office.

The other day I posted where on your IRS 1040, http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf , but where does a Obama's $250,000 a tax redistribution program begin. That part of his redistribution of wealth program is never made crystal clear, and I believe there will be families who are thinking since they make less than $250,000 as reported on line 7, are exempt of this tax increase.
Line 7: Wages, salaries, tips, etc. Attach Form(s) W-2
Line 22: Add the amounts in the far right column for lines 7 through 21. This is your total income
Line 37: Subtract line 36 from line 22. This is your adjusted gross income
Line 41: Subtract line 40 from line 38 (Line 40 is your deductions)
Line 43: Taxable income. Subtract line 42 from line 41. If line 42 is more than line 41, enter -0-
Surprise that may not be the case, specifically if you have worked hard, saved and invested, been responsible and played by the rules. You may sadly discover all your time and effort has not only elevated into the so-called rich column resulting in paying more taxes, less take home pay, but when the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire you'll bring home even less money. Under the Obama redistribution of wealth program not only will you be pushed you into the 39% tax bracket, but the with the expiring Bush Tax Cuts (this affects everyone not just the so-called rich) you'll end up in the mid 40% tax bracket. The % of people making over $250,000 living paycheck to paycheck are the same as those who make below $250,000. With wealth comes the purchase of more expensive items, and I can see a increase of more costly home mortgages going into foreclosure rising even further under Mr Obama redistribution wealth program. Class envy is so pathetic, and I take it that makes some of you gleeful thinking the so-called rich are going to get theirs. Well remember this, it is the so-called rich who who are responsible for most of the employment, products you buy and use everyday, places where we reside homes & apartments, food, etc., and when their cost goes up, your dollars will buy that much less. Small companies, who are responsible for the largest number of employees, will not be able to withstand the higher cost, resulting in higher cost you, or laying off employees, last hired first fired, increasing unemployment, increasing more foreclosures, more bankruptcies, more loan defaults. Wealth redistribution, isn't it a beautiful thing?

Back to the hot sauce question. I've tried it. It is in all the local Mexican restaurants.
Typical Mexican hot sauce imo,
I tend to use Valentina myself. They sell it in the local stores, (Did I tell you I live in a Mexican neighborhood?)
It is flavorful and cheap you can buy it by the quart if you want. It is a good cooking sauce.
BTW both are named after states in Mexico, I don't know if that gives a regional difference or not.
My favorite chili sauce is a Vietnamese sauce called Sriracha, it has a rooster on the label. It is very garlicky.
I also, ran across a Mexican eating sauce that was chilis in lime juice in stead of vinegar. I can't remember the name but It was good.

The future of Healthcare improvement must be driven by Innovation and NOT a big government redistricbution
Big Government will kill innovation
"America’s health care system behaves like a hidebound, tradition-based ball club that chases after aging sluggers and plays by the old rules: we pay too much and get too little in return. To deliver better health care, we should learn from the successful teams that have adopted baseball’s new evidence-based methods. The best way to start improving quality and lowering costs is to study the stats."

Anselm, oh for god's sake. the top tax bracket under obama's plan will deprive the rich (I use the term advisedly since some of my best friends have AGIs over $250K) of an additional 4% of their taxable income - as it was in the 90s when the economy was doing quite nicely thank you, and there are exemptions for small businesses that may not currently be available to them, so cut the crap. (And if you're going to make a reference to line 42 on the 1040, you should include a reference to how it's derived). And McCain advocates making permanent the tax cuts he decried as fiscally irresponsible. Gimme a break. And that saw about tax increases meaning fewer jobs is horse shit. Bush's tax cuts have produced the job cuts and layoffs we're NOW seeing in real time that you claim Obama's tax increases WILL cause. Speculation based on "common sense" which ignores actual economic forces beats cause effect observations any day for Reagonmists. And never mind that Obama has proposed tax credits for businesses that create jobs here, generating jobs and resultant demand and growth in the economy - McCain has not. But then, the facts don't seem to bother Reaganomists. Demand drives the jobs sector of the economy, not tax cuts. No tax cut ever generated demand for anything, and certainly not among members of the investment classes. Even the tax incentives this year - which were tax cuts aimed at those making less than $125K - piled onto the Bush tax cuts that failed to energize the economy produced a temporary bump in the economy something about the relative size of a pimple on an elephant's ass, followed by the recession we're seeing now. I could argue cause and effect based on that alone, but don't have to. And that month to month thing - if you've chosen to buy expensive houses and cars that keep you living hand to mouth because you make more money than you used to, I'd call that a self-imposed problem and why should we support a tax structure that rewards and preserves irresponsible choices anyway?

After the last 8 years of utterly failed Bush/republican rule, only the last 2 of which had dems in control of anything, how in the world can you accuse liberals of being big spenders and sponsoring censorship? We've witnessed the largest increase in the size of government in history coinciding with the biggest restriction of free speech rights. Actually, Anselm, my own taxes have remained relatively flat for the past 15 years relative to my position in the tax structure (and absolutely flat for the past 9 years). Inflation adjusting the tax code and brackets is well beyond my math skills - perhaps you could provide a link to the tax code exressed in today's dollars? You are only spouting opinion and are not proving your points or providing any data that tend to prove them - and I only suppose it is because you don't have the data to do so. Show me where I'm wrong. And no, I'm not a tax attorney, but my wife was before she lost her mind and became a divorce attorney - and we discuss this stuff and she agrees with what I've said.

Compared to right wing ideals McCain may not be conservative, but compared to Obama, McCain certainly is conservative. Simplistic economic platitudes, tax cuts for the wealthy, you're on your own economics, and a promise to cut out wasteful government spending, and a VP candidate who (in words if not in deeds) is somehere to the right of Reagan - sounds pretty conservative to me.

Anselm,
That is an awful lot of assumptions to make in one post without asking first.
Yes I've been to a black church, black beauty shop, and black church. There have been wealthy black people from virtually the beginning of American history otherwise DuBois and Washington wouldn't have had anything to argue about. I'm sure the stock market is giving them shivvers right along with their white, yellow, and brown counterparts.

Rez,
Yes I am. I doubt I would ever use it, but I think the choice should be available. We put animals out of their misery as an act of kindness. I just had to do it for my beloved Rory.
Medicine has advanced to the point where someone who would have died naturally only a few years ago can now be kept alive for an extended time even against their will.
It won't help my children. They have standing instructions that if my faculties are gone, they are to administer pillow to face and this law doesn't get them off the hook for that one. Closest I could come was a living will saying if the lights are on but nobody is home to pull all the plugs.

Jamie,
LLIL living in their own little world deciding what is good in my world, ". We know best, we care more." Thank you, but no thank you. Not awful at all, very much the truth. Liberal programs has turned the grandchildren of slaves into slaves themselves. When will LLIL ever learn handouts were never wanted, a hand up yes, but not these government free handouts has only further enslaved a segment of our society. I know that wasn't the intended achievement, but that was it's conclusion. You would think LLIL would have learned from past mistakes, but no that was not to be. LLIL, because you care so much, are so concern about us, that you made it possible for people who couldn't afford a home to buy one, even though it was a doomed purchased from the very start. Not only does this kill neighborhoods, devalue home prices, the local economy, your loving thoughtful care has destroyed the credit history of many a person. Thanks LLIL for all your caring.

Jamie....
I haven 't seen "W" yet..... it comes out today at our local theater.... I will wait a few days.... I'm sure it will be a mob scene at the movies tonight....
BTW..... we are lucky to have this really great small theater in a nearby town....
the guy who owns it, used to be the guy who brought movies into a very famous theater in Boston called the Orpheus...... he brings in all the great art films that one would have to go to Boston in order to see.... it is located on the upper floor of the town hall..... just below the police station.... it is a very funky place....... and absolutely NO Stallone films will ever see it's screen as long as Dennis owns it.....

"Yes I've been to a black church, black beauty shop, and black church."
Does that mean you have been to a Black church twice?

"you guys are toooooooo much today"
Renee,
I wish so much I could be nice like you. You are great
.
There have been so many times you have said something nice to me, given me words of support. I'm usually so overwhelmed by your kindness that I'm left speechless, and therefore have had a hard time telling you how much it has meant to me. It seems that you have known when I've needed it most and have known just when to say it.
Well, to make a long story shorter, Thanks.

Meant to type "barbershop". You can add restaurant, clubs, community centers, and most important homes to the list.

You are right about the hand up vs. the hand out. There is a black guilt component as well as a white guilt one.
The Civil Rights movement made it possible for the educated and successful black population to flee the ghetto almost faster than white flight fleeing encroachment. The end result was a population of the least educated and most impoverished left behind without mentors to show them the escape routes.
It is good to see a trend of the successful moving back in many cities, but then you get the charges of gentrification and elimination of affordable housing for the poor.
I would like to see the whole welfare system redesigned with the emphasis placed on performance as well as the clearing away of hurdles.
You can't demand that someone go to work if they have no education, no skils, no transportation, no safe place for children etc. Unfortunately this is much more hands on and expensive than just issuing subsistence checks while giving a whole lot of middle class folks a jobs pushing paper.

Jaxtrader-Go for the GM stock. Crystler just got rid of a bunch of white-collars(to merge mid-mngt with GM) And as soon as Obama becomes prez he is going to give federal 'insentives' to Amer. car companies, that will help shore them up and they won't go under. It'll pay off big time in about ten years when car companies are totally shifted over to alternative fuel vehicles.
Posted by: rosiethecat
| October 24, 2008 1:23 PM
Rosie,
GM is so cheap you can get a sizeable number of shares without risking any real money. Today I bought a barge shipping company, an oil company and one of my regional banks all are great very secure companies at prices I've never even considered possible. Some great companies are getting caught in the stampede......grab them while insanity reigns...

Lame post, Craig. Lot of important things going on in the world. One random act of violence (assuming that's the case, seems like a hoax) isn't national news. I understand justifications can be made for the dissemination of this "story", but it would be nice if the bar were raised a little.

in mexico,it does not matter, the politicians rule over business and government with very little oversight, it is a very rich country, with no concern for the little guy, that is why so many of it's people leave to come here------Pres.Solis (ex) owned everything from the railroads, trucking,to shoe shine boxes, stole the country's $ him and his family,,,,Pres Fox did do a lot of repair, but not enough,,,in his case the one time 6 years term was not enough, lots of virgin land, but the gov. steals them from the indians also,,etc etc

It DID used to be the place to go from the 1930's until the 50's . It was run by a corrupt government that was basically an off-shot of the American Mafia. I've seen several older movies set in Havana (can't think of a one of them, however. Craig?) When the Cuban revolution tool place, communism still seemed like a pretty neat idea to peoples that had been habitually ripped off by their own government. There are a lot of older Cuban's that don't think it's such a neat idea, anymore.

for the tenth time----what we need is a combination of the 2 isms, social, and capital, but since the only 2 political party's that we have are in the pockets of the large corps, whats the diff, you are just arguing differences that don't exit any more----we are living this proof today with the crises that we are in------no one in either party knew this was coming?????? they let it happen thinking that there were no limits,,,now it's going to be the D's way again until they over do it with their social programs that (some)don't work, but will get their side richer,,,,but i would rather have a D in there, they know when to stop---the R's don't,,,the S and L trillions, now this melt down, the D's can't possibly do this much even if they tried,,,,,you have a diff team shirt on than the D's and are protecting the same field, from the 50 yard line that you both start from,,,,,,the D's just won this coin toss that's all----a view from the peanut gallery, and indies that never get to play, cos we can't be bought, thats why you R's and D's sweet talk us until election day, then we go with the one that we think that will do the least harm,,,,but rah rah rah, zim goom bah,,,or somtin like that, thanks
