So Craig,
Why such a bipolar reaction between Palin's and McCain's speeches in your opinion?
Do you agree that he is now a shoo in to win as Chris Matthews suggests?

That's what i thought...
Here's a question/comment I have after watching the Republicans in action...
Am I being to racially sensitive when I can make a mental note of each minority face I saw at the convention? I remember the black guy wearing the POW hat last night and that pastor tonight. I admit I didn't watch the convention but were there any black speakers featured?
If I think my segment of the population is underrepresented within the circles of power, how can I expect any change from a group that I have felt has always sought to exclude me from their sphere of influence?

More from SoetorObama's "hidden" past.
=============================
Obama's Years at Columbia Are a Mystery
"The Obama campaign has refused to release his college transcript, despite an academic career that led him to Harvard Law School and, later, to a lecturing position at the University of Chicago. The shroud surrounding his experience at Columbia contrasts with that of other major party nominees since 2000, all whom have eventually released information about their college performance or seen it leaked to the public."

In previous years they brought in every black face they had, this year they didn't bother. Did they have fewer blacks? damned if I know. but they didn't view it as worthwhile. they trotted out the women instead.

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin seems to have switched colleges at least six times in six years, including two stints at the University of Idaho before graduating from there in 1987.

Lower taxes for their base...the wealthy
Increase the size of government but give it a smaller focus, the needs of the rich and corporations.
Achieve those goals by creating "diplomatic opportunities" best met with our superior defense assets.

pretty damn good, McCain gets applause when he says he'll cut wasteful spending as another ten BILLION dollars goes down the rathole of Iraq this month...everybody knows our economic woes are tied into the financial drain that Bush war is taking.
Everybody know McCain is a Bush clone, and yet the refuses to acknowledge it...trying to get away with a little criticism of his corrupt party , thinking that means he is distant from Bush...WHAT A JOKE ! He IS McBush...just look at the record.
At least he was a lot more respectful to Obama than that veep of his, who came off like a whiny snot-nosed teenager last night with her disgraceful comments about Obama.
There is no way Sarah Palin could be President of the USA, and I tend to think that if McCain wins he'll drop out, not run in 2012, but for the sake of the republic let's hope he loses in 2008.

Julie,
It's easy to dismiss the anger a minority can have when you haven't yourself experience an ounce of the discrimination and derision they've faced.
If I'm bored, I will wear a bow tie instead of a normal necktie just to see how long it takes for the first Nation of Islam joke.
I can be better dressed than anyone in a store but as a person of color I still get followed in stores.
In my days of being a boisterous youth, I've always had to be super aware of any dealings with the police. In a public environment when you have to declare to bystanders that you aren't resisting...just to keep from a stick to the chest, that pisses me off.
I see what this country has allowed to happen to Haiti and the squalor they live in there, all because the USA supported a dictator who threatened to go to the Russians if the US tried to enforce human rights there...I'm not proud of that.
Yes I know it wasn't you or your forefathers that had slaves, yada yada yada but despite that, many people have won a lottery by being born "white americans". Looking at things from your perspective, I can understand a basis for you anger, but I think it's wrong. I look at the derision people have, especially those who claim to be victims of reverse discrimination. Why does discrimination only become a concern of your segment of society when it's being done to you? Why is 30 years of attempted equalization far less acceptable than the 300 years of actual discrimination that preceded it?
Why should she be proud that she was born during time when members of her race were being hosed, shot and lynched because they wanted equality?
Why should she be proud that her parents, war heroes, sports stars and celebrities couldn't use the same bathroom, sit at the same table in a restaurant or use the same water fountain as you?
What you call hatred, others call the scars of a long memory. What you call hatred, others will call sadness over realizing that despite the lofty ideal your country, the country you love, codified slavery into its founding document. While you as a women may earn 3/5 of a man's pay, at least you were never considered property or told you were only 3/5 of a human being because of your color.

Michelle just seems to hit me the wrong way. I have said and maintain I will not vote for Obama, not because of his color of skin. I just simply think he is an empty suit and I do not like the people behind him.. Biden said it himself - the presidency is not a place for learning on the job.

Bear, I can't speak for Julie, but I appreciate what you're saying here and that you took the time to say it. But how do you know what we've experienced?
"While you as a women may earn 3/5 of a man's pay, at least you were never considered property or told you were only 3/5 of a human being because of your color."
And what makes you think that women are not considered "property" by some men? As well as treated as though they're 3/5 of a human being?

--Except for the last few minutes, the content was neither inspired nor inspiring.

Actually, women in the US weren't allowed to own property until the 1800s. If a woman's husband died, the property went to her son, father, brother, etc., who could throw her out & leave her with nothing if they wanted.
Women are still sold into slavery all over the world, usually by their families. They aren't selling their sons, they're selling their daughters.
Look at the one-child policy in China. They don't want their girls.
There is a glass ceiling. When younger, women are treated dissmissively. When older, they are seen as a threat, a nuisance that must be stifled.
Real change would have been Hil'ry; a competent woman with a track-record.
There are pockets of racism both geographically & generationally, but they are shrinking. Quit trying to use them as your badge of honor. YOU were never considered 3/5 human. BO is not the sone of slaves, he is the son of an immigrant and a woman from Kansas.

The Other Party's Playbook
By Eugene Robinson
"Talk about role reversal. The Republican Party, which scoffs at the nonsense of "identity politics," has staked everything on the compelling life stories of its presidential and vice presidential candidates. The Democratic Party, ever conscious of the diversity of modern America, is doing everything it can to blur the lines of race, class and gender.
As if anyone thought otherwise, this is going to be an interesting few weeks until Nov. 4."

mornin' all.
Second night in a row I found that LP's homework, the USOpen and football beat hell out of the Repug convention. So on to the post mortems.
"Mr. McCain defined bipartisanship as not only working with the opposite party but being prepared to work against his own, even though he is aligned with Mr. Bush on two of the biggest issues facing the country: the Iraq war and the economy. "
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/05/us/politics/05repubs.html?hp
Lessee, kinda like that moron Hannity's claim to be critical of Bush - walk in lockstep with Bushco on the big issues that are what the voters give a crap about, and criticize them on their position on the amount of subsidies the feds should give to Sitka, AK for their animal control officers. Yeah, change, my ass.

It will be interesting to see how all the msm reports this morning. Last night most seemed to think the content of his speech was good and somewhat what he had to do. Get away from Bush/Cheney. Sarah is his ace in the hole. She is a sweetheart and a natural.
Ha, too bad she could not have given his speech for him.
It really galls me that the RNC is standing up for Sarah on the sexism and the DNC was so blooming quiet. Feel like BO was pushed and shoved down our throat, whether we wanted him or not. Frydaddy was correct in his posting yesterday.

To me word to sum up the speech was bizarre, maybe boring.
The most bizarre section was when he tied both parties together as part of the problem and he was going to go in and clean the place up. It was like he was the ousider and had nothing to do with the mess.
That would make him sort of an insider outsider .

Fry, looking back to your posts yesterday, McCain was commanding officer of a training sqaudron in Pensacola for one year thirty two years ago, during which he improved the squadron's performance and which was as he describes himself was during a time of his own selfishness and immaturity and during which he f*cked around on his wife, which eventually broke up his marriage and just before he moved to DC to be the military equivalent of a lobbyist (legislative liaison). That's the vaunted executive experience you want to claim for him? You think that's so much greater executive experience than Obama? Have at, but I don't grade either one of them as having any worth mentioning. McCain's experience has been in the Senate, and we know that doesn't count in Repug world as executive experience.
Blue, those magnetic pulse generators have been around for a long time - they were one of the things Reagan envisioned as part of the SDI program - Russia is just miniaturizing them. Their limitations have always been that they were large and heavy, it takes a huge amount of power to charge them and the pulse has verylimited range.

Now that he has divorced Shrub and gotten custody of Laura Bush --he might be able to make the argument. McCain can say all the bad things that happened are Shrub's fault --if ONLY they had done it McCain's way originally it would have been better. His target is white men --so how dumb are they?

If they would just claim victory in Iraq and get out of there, thier chances would go up like a rocket. We need Iraq like a hole in the head. So what if it is not victorious. Play like Bush did way back when with the big banner. We need to quit putting all the money into Iraq, ours and borrowed from China.. The money hole keeps growing.

Jack, insider outsider? I love it. Kind of sums up his illusory claims to being so different from the rest of the tax cutting hawks in Bushco.
If McCain gets elected, I don't see much different in either of the biggest issues we are facing, which probably will account for at least 80% of what gets addressed in Washington during the next fefw years, so I think the prediction that the establishment republicans won't know what hit them is a bit over the top - after all, Lindsay Graham, Fred Thompson and the plunger all think he's just swell, but I could be proven wrong. I do think he might be inclined to support some bipartisan efforts such as lobbying reform and campaign finance reform, but otherwise, where does he differ from the rest? Of course if he wants to get anything done, he'll have to do something different since he'll likely be facing a near veto-proof congress.

That reminds me of another bizarre moment.
McCain said we were sending 700 billion to countries that don't even like us. He was going to bring that money home. Does that mean the war is over? That is the only way I can find 700 billion in foreign aid.

Rita,
With regards to your 3:22 post...it's relevant in my opinion because unemployment is up to 6.1%. The figures for previous months were revised upwards as well. Republicans are trying to paint Obama as an elitist and Cindy McCain was dress for the Oscars. $300,000 in jewelry may play well with the rappers, but if I were struggling to keep my house and I heard the possible first lady was wearing jewelry worth twice as much as my house and I didn't hear anything about how they would help me, I would be a bit put off...At least Obama is trying to talk to those people.

flatus, clients have rightly complained about billable hour fee structures for the 15 years I've been in this business - problem is, most clients at least in litigation are insurance companies, and they would lose their ability to cut bills and reduce fees (the target these days is 30%) if they moved to a more fixed fee method. There is a side industry of consultants who charge the insurance companies to do that, and get a cut of the reduced fees. There are a couple of large, well known to most, insurance companies I will not work for because of those arrangements. That article is from a British source - their system is much different from ours (loser pays the legal fees of the winner, and I believe they have very limited contingency fee use) as far as fee generation in litigation is concerned - and the $200M fee they mention is the typical 1/3 contingency fee that plaintiffs firms use - it's more like 40% in medmal and other complex litigation.

julie, They ain't claiming victory and they ain't getting out of Iraq, contrary to Bush's predictions to reduce troop levels by January if conditions on the ground warranted that. Well, the surge worked, right, because conditions on the ground are so much better, right? Isnt' that what they have been saying, McCain among the most vocal? And what will that result in? A 4,500 man transfer of ONE combat batallion from Iraq to Afghanistan to fight a resurgent Taliban. Victory you say? pshaw I say. I'm so deliriously happy over this redeployment I can't stand it.

Just seems we'd all be better off putting this election on a more level playing field, and to stop making it about everything except who the best candidate is. More from SoetorObama's "hidden" past.
=============================
Obama Had Close Ties to Top Saudi Adviser at Early Age
"Sutton did not say why al-Mansour was helping Obama, how he discovered him, or from whom he was raising money on Obama’s behalf.
... he is well known within the black community as a lawyer, an orthodox Muslim, a black nationalist, an author, an international deal-maker, an educator, and an outspoken enemy of Israel.
But his writings and books are packed with anti-American rhetoric reminiscent of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s disgraced former pastor.
“I think there’s more to this story and to Barack Obama than we realize,” Peterson said. “As all the truth comes out before the election, I don’t think he has a chance. I can’t see American’s taking that kind of risk.”

The grim news comes as the race for the White House kicks into high gear. The economy's troubles are Americans' top worry."

From the last NYT article I linked (which I highly recommend you read - it is filled with a wealth of info on the economy as it is right now) -
"With the Fed on the sidelines, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has called for a second round of government stimulus, while his GOP rival John McCain has favored free-trade and other business measures to spur the economy."
Which do you think appeals more to voters? btw, where's Obama these days? Mighty quiet out there.

Yet a poll yesterday had them even, Obama has to make a case as to why his ideas will work. Just calling McCain another bush is going to do that. The one thing that the convention did is seperate McCain from Bush. I don't think that the American people are convinced that basic core beliefs of the Republicans won't work. Notice last night McCain blame corruption for the ideas not working. It could work.

Pogo...do you think these stimulus packages ever work in a strategic sense (as opposed to a PR sense)?
I mean, they always sound so impressive -- billions and billions of dollars for this or that. But compared to the underlying forces at play in the economy, that's still a paltry amount of money.
Not to mention the fact that by the time they get through the congressional pork factory, they're not only too little but too late.

Jack, one poll of 3 released on the same day for the same 3 day period does not impress me much, but it does surprise me some considering what I've read about the Repug convention. Sarah apparently has wowed enough voters to help Johnnie's poll numbers.
LL, no I don't. Short of massive stimulus packages to fund projects that create huge numbers of jobs, I think stimulus packages are gimmicks whose purpose is to impress and create consumer confidence in a jittery electorate - but with jobs numbers doing what they are - a loss of 1/2 million in the past year - and an average hourly wage no just above $18/hr - for a whopping average annual earning level of $36K - they aren't fooling anyone who's paying attention to the economy instead of to Sarah Palin's pretty little face.
Krugman has an interesting take on it in his today's column.

By the time any spending is done on these projects it is a year down the road at a minimum. and that is just the planning phase. 2 more years for the construction to start..
Even block grants to projects already in the pipeline will take time.
The stimulus checks do more to help China then the US. One trip to the store and most of it goes to China.
The old ideas are geared to a self sustaned economy with little trade. They don't work as well in a global economy.

You guys have ALL the fun when I'm asleep! I used to have Dynasty parties where we'd drink anytime someone in the show had a drink. Pretty effective! Craig, Mall of AMERICA.. one of my favourite places! It used to be the Met Stadium before it was torn down to build the "mega-mall". In the indoor amusement park you visited, if you looked around carefully you would have found a bronzed home plate on the ground at the spot where the real home plate was for the baseball games. The Mall has so many restaurants, bars, movie theaters and some fun shops...
Seriously happy to see your video !!

You know, this blog has an interesting mix of people. I don't like the back and forth bickering but sometimes it's part of human nature. From what I can see, nearly everyone here is a decent person and for that I am grateful. Yes sometimes our dialogues can get snarky or we get wound up in heated discussions, or spread rumours about candidate backgrounds etc, but ... really... all in all, this is a good group. It's a community and within a community you're always going to have divisions.
Hang on to what is best and let go of the rest...

Watching Obama just now in small group setting reminded me a lot of watching Bill Clinton work a room of similar size. Obama comes across like a Clinton-style folksy policy wonk. Even here in Iowa, we never really got to see him in this type of setting because of the large crowds...Doesn't come across near-as elitist.

EuroTom,
What I'm finding is something interesting. I think we're starting to bicker less with each other, mainly because the enemy is becoming more and more clear. It's one thing to engage intra party battles, but when the dust is settled, you remember that the people you REALLY don't like are the warmongers in the GOP. Just the sound of their voices is making me sick.

My main objection with Obama has always been his pernicious weakness. When it comes to picking a commander in chief that threshold to me is very high. Hillary won my confidence, while my impression of Obama steadily diminishes over time. To me it is clear that Obama lacks the fortitude to be a strong leader in defense of this nation. Even if I buttress his character with Ayers, Wright, and the race mongering Clyburn, BO still doesn't have the qualities to lead our country in these dangerous times. Although if I could infuse the poise, strength and sheer fortitude I witnessed in Sarah Palin into BO, that would be a different matter.

A spokes person for Real Clear Politics was on a local morning radio show here in Charlotte explaining how polls work and how van one person be up one day and down the next and how is it BHO could be 8 pts in one poll but tied in another poll. The spokes person explain it like this, after a major speech it usually takes 3 full days, usually longer, before that information is filtered correctly in the polling. JM gave his speech last night that information won't be filtered through until Monday. So all these poll numbers you are seeing are the result from a rolling 3 or more days task. So don't look for anything of substance until Monday/Tuesday.

Obama reminds me of Bush in his capacity to NEVER admit to a mistake, yesterday he ruefully pandered to Bill O’Reiilly's conservative base by admitting that the "surge has worked beyond our wildest dreams." How astonishingly painful it was for the neophyte Obama to admit that the "surge" was succeeding. The most important issue he faced in the senate and BO got it WRONG. Obama's decisions are shaped in the bowels of Moveon.org, then refined by the Chicago machine and the MSM.
It is also worth mentioning that the intrepid Obama also refused to denounce the anti Gen. Petraeus Ad by Moveon disdaining this noble patriot.

FryDaddy,
The proper way to respond to the notion that the surge worked is this way...
* John McCain supported the incompetent Bush plan that ignored the recommendations of Generals who said the initial force needed to be at least 200,000 troops.
* Had those Generals been listed to instead of fired, there would have been enough boots on the ground and the surge WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN NEEDED.
* As it stands, the surge has helped because Al Sadr was bribed to stand down. There was a Sunni awakening which caused them to realize that Al Qaeda was making things worse for them by stirring conflict. They figured out that the US would stay as long as they were given a reason to stay. These things happened before the escalation of troops.
Count your uh's all you want. I think they are less annoying and more genuine than this "My friends" bullshit McCain tries to get us to swallow.
Patd,
Thanks for that link. I will say the black republicans featured are far more articulate about their party values and beliefs than the rest of the party. If McCain were smart, he would have them campaign for him. They offer a reasonableness to their positions that I can't see from the likes of Plunger, Mitten or anyone else...
I'm saddened, but not shocked that this fine piece of journalism came from a source outside the US. I guess that's something else we've outsourced...Craig and CQ excepted of course.

This will come back to bite him in his skinny ass. Americans can differ on the war, they can differ on military spending, but when our troops are in harms way and are being lead by a very popular military leader such as Gen. Petraeus who is doing an outstanding job, and you refuse to denounce Moveon garbage attacks on this hero, you have unknowingly pissed off a number of people. Rolling out the old freedom of speech is all well and good but at some point you have to grow a set and go after those who's only intent was to smear this fine person.

Pogo,
I saw your link to the polling data. The CBS poll shows them even but I'm curious about the pool sampled.
In every poll listed, Obama had a favorable rating in the mid 50's, yet with this CBS pool, he was in the high 30's. My first reaction is that this group was weighted more Republican than the other samples. If that's not the case than it is a significant warning to the Dems.
Just from what I'm hearing from people in my area, even the big time Republican are less excited now than they were this time last week. The more they learn about Palin, the more annoyed they get and they fear that McCain's inability to give a speech decently is a harbinger to being another Bush...
I heard another christian, this one who teaches bible study repeat the line..."Jesus was a community organizer while Pontius Pilate was a governor". She really doesn't think Palin did herself any favors with that speech.

Fry,
Your knowledge on matters pertaining to patriotism or military history are as refreshing as eating yellow snow.
In a Democracy, you have the right to say anything. You don't like the moveon.org ad, fine...I thought it was stupid personally.
Considering the culture that this administration fomented in the Pentagon, I'm not shocked that the men running the Iraq war have been handcuffed. I'm not surprised at the perception that Patraeus is a yes man. He's doing the job...I don't care.
Before you think I know nothing, I have a couple friends, and family who worked at the Pentagon. They were there in the 80's and until this Bush. The 3 of them, Republicans mind you left the Pentagon frightened by what this administration was doing. My uncle, a vietnam vet said
They have no idea what their doing and they care about the people fighting their war. The soldiers are viewed as nothing more than assets or chattel.
They can't understand how troops were sent to war under equipped. The lack of armored vehicle and body armor for urban warfare, in blatant disregard to what happened in Somalia was incomprehensible.
They don't understand why they were sent in short staffed. Anyone with skill in planning knew that the number the President wanted was at least 40% less than what prudent planners wanted.
They don't know why there was no credence give to any plan but the best case scenario in a post Saddam Iraq
They'd love to know why real benefits to our soldiers have been cut. Health care for returning vets is a complete joke and lord help you if you have mental injury.
Fry, that's okay...I know you think your better than me or anyone else you don't agree with. While you continue to wipe your ass with the American flag, we'll continue to fight for it. If you ever want to discuss it, perhaps when I get a private tour of the white house this fall, you'd like to join me?

Milquetoast,
Ahhhh, Ty. You know I am an R, but had HRC been at the head of the D's ticket I know my wife was going to vote for her, and even I was being swayed in her direction. But now I have JM, who made the brilliant decision in picking as his VP a female named Sarah. One of the other mistakes BHO made by not picking HRC as his second seat, when he loses this election to JM, JM will be a 1, count them "ONE", term president. Sarah will run for POTUS in 2012. I like HRC, but Sarah will roll over her in 2012, and it is to bad in a way, because HRC would have made a great POTUS. BHO, the PC squad at the DNC, and the MSM, just about sealed the vault door on any chances HRC will ever become POTUS. This may sound like a bit of a stretch, but I wouldn't be surprise to learn HRC switching parties. She and Bill have got to be looking at themselves and thinking, "hey they didn't ,the D party, didn't even say thank you, or goodnight before the shoved us out of the car. Toast,
You're going to have a hard time getting a man who was hosed by Bull Connor, marched with Martin Luther King and was physically beaten by the forces of segregation to withdraw any kind of notion of racism.
If memory serves, he was a major backer of Bill Clinton and chose to remain neutral in this race and didn't say anything until the end of April and he spoke out only after getting a lot of feedback from colleagues on the house floor and voters.
Watch Cliburn and tell me how he is biased...

EuroTom,
What I'm finding is something interesting. I think we're starting to bicker less with each other, mainly because the enemy is becoming more and more clear. It's one thing to engage intra party battles, but when the dust is settled, you remember that the people you REALLY don't like are the warmongers in the GOP. Just the sound of their voices is making me sick.

Bear,
I agree with your recounting of Congressman Clyburn's life experiences, but his neutrality vis-a-vis Barack and Hillary was clearly a sham by April 25th when that KO interview took place. By that time, every quote he released made it clear that he was standing with the Obama campaign.
He was still an undeclared super-delegate, but it's my position that he was not "undecided." That was fine. The man certainly had the right to choose whomever he preferred, but MSNBC and others contributed to the sham by trotting him out as an undecided SD.

One of the major differences between you and I is this. I fought under this flag during war, protected 2 US Presidents, and fought the drug wars here and other places, and this flag which is so coveted, so thought of, stands as a vision of hope and freedom around the world, yet you make reference to having someone wipe their ass with the flag. You are a real piece of work. Your own words tell volumes of what you really think of the US. You are like so many Socialist whiners. Posted by: JohnR | September 5, 2008 4:40 PM
There is it, the love it or leave it! Fry, I am an American just like you.
All I demand from my government is competence. I don't care if it's from a Democrat or Republican. Because no Democrat has called me a nigger to my face for not bowing to their mantra, I find myself identifying with them.
What do I do? I quietly volunteer to help the people around me. Heaven forbid I think I can make the most impact helping people in my community. Unlike your ilk, I don't seek publicity for it.
Did I have an opportunity to enlist, sure. After realizing that I was lied to by my recruiter and after talking to men who had served in the Marines, they told me there was a better way. Unlike you, I don't want to be in a position to kill another human being. I don't thirst for blood. I've been trained how to fight and I do so quite well. I don't like how I feel after I do so, hence I try to avoid physical conflict. I don't want to be like a former colleague and have as a memento of my service in Desert Storm two photo albums of me posing with charred Iraqis. That makes me a coward in your eyes...I don't give a shit.
I've seen your love it or leave it types. You wrap yourselves in the flag as the only true Americans. Yet you desecrate the flag you supposedly revere by putting it on anything to sell in order to make a buck. What's worse is you make these patriotic items in China or Mexico to save a buck.
You think I want handouts? No. Lord knows how much crap I turned down if I even thought there was a hint of race playing a part in giving it to me. Show me a Republican who would turn down anything that didn't come with a favor attached.
You are the one looking for hand outs. The so called socialists want government to work for the betterment of ALL PEOPLE. You and and your blood thirsty friends, want government to work for the betterment of your friends. Show me one war profiteer who's a socialist. Rudy Giuliani is a Republican and he's done nothing but use the memories of dead American's to make millions. He is begging for more of the same so he can continue his handouts. All I ever wanted was the people brought to justice. Your government fucked that up...

Why not hold the Bush Admin accountable now instead of empty promises IF they win the Presidency? I heard Kucinich introduced articles of impeachment, what happened to that?
Posted by: champ | September 5, 2008 2:19 PM
Champ, I mostly agree, but remember that the Repugs in the Senate also remained totally obstructionist while the Dems were trying to get consensus on ending the war. So much for integrity. Wake up, Tom. You're getting played like a fiddle. "Hate these guys; trust us; we'll take care of you." It's all BS, dude. They all go to the same parties and polo matches, dinners and teas. The Democratic power-brokers are no more your friend than the GOP. Stop apologizing for them when you know as well as I do they're not worthy of such efforts.
You should feel more empathy than contempt for your counter-parts on the right, because they're getting exploited just like you, just by different people.

And? Do we have to kiss butt because you fought in a war? Unless it was the 1st or 2nd World War I doubt it was really justified, unless it was Afghanistan which I do believe was worth going into but was POORLY mismanaged during all the pretenses of the Bush lying team justifying the war for oil action in Iraq...
Your comments about the flag scares me. It's a flag dude. Trust me, the rest of the world doesn't carp such a tearful, longing hard on for the American flag. It is as much a symbol of oppression around the world as it is a symbol of hope and freedom. America has never hesitated to illegally engage in combat against countries that didn't cow tow to its demands. Check out our fine history in Guatemala, El Salvador, Chile just to name 3. Europeans are grateful for the USA's role in WW1 and WW2, but it must be said that the British and the Canadians played a huge part in that war effort.
I like the colors and design of the American flag... I am not a "patriot" in the exaggerated sense that the right-wing fosters to stifle dissent and demand conformity. That is NOT freedom! That is tyranny!

Champ, I am a Democrat in the fine tradition of the Minnesota Democratic Farmer Labor Party. As said before, my inspiration for higher education came from Hubert Humphrey's biography, a book I checked out from a public library (those libraries, a social plot to be sure). I am grateful that Humphrey and yes, Lyndon Johnson, pushed for programs to help poorer people like me to have the chance for higher education. My great-grandfather came to the USA from Germany and his wife was second generation Norwegian-American in Minnesota. My grandmother grew up on a farm in cold Northern Minnesota and she worked years at Honeywell, usually 12 to 13 hours a day to take care of us, her 3 grandchildren and only daughter. Thanks to the Democrats, I had the opportunity to pursue an education that a generation or 2 earlier would have been closed to me, though Reagan sure worked hard, and successfully, to cut the programs that provided grants to poor students guaranteeing that most of us graduated hopelessly in debt.
So yes, I am Democrat with socialist leanings. To me a mixed economy of capitalism and socialism works the best. The "magic of the market" theory has been disproved time and again. I long for the liberal state of the 40s 50s and 60s.... where taking care of our people was a partnership between government, industry and community. The right wing ideologues believe it's only the responsibility of the individual.
As for ending the War, you surely saw all the maneuvering the REPUGS did to kill bills or even proclamations from going forward.
Yes I am disapp

I still remember my first time visiting Seattle. It was March, 1980 and I took a bus from my Dad's house in Redmond to the Pike Place Market. There was this little tea place called "Tea and Crumpets". I never knew "crumpets" were a real thing... but I was intrigued so I had some sort of elegant tea and the crumpets and thought it was rather cool. Also on the day (in another part of Pike Place Market) I had my very first espresso ever. I thought I was ordering a cappuccino. The woman who made it for me saw I was puzzled and I said "wow that's a small coffee" and she asked "is this your first espresso?" I replied "yes" and she immediately got me a glass of water and said "here, you'll need this"... and she was right!
I do miss the Pacific Northwest... the nature and the climate. LOVE IT!

Obama Tightens
",,,,,nothing has been more surprising than the fact that Obama’s own speech was far more personally and ideologically negative toward John McCain and the GOP than Biden’s was. Standard general-election politics has it that the vice presidential candidate is to dispense with the cordiality and go directly at the opposition, while the presidential candidate — whose central goal is usually to broaden his appeal, move to the center, and try to bring new voters into his camp — is to elevate himself into the realm of World Leadership. He wants people to be able to imagine him in the Oval Office, and to like what they imagine; leaders, it was once presumed, had to remain above the partisan fray."
".....the comportment of the leader of the Free World is important, and that we expect such a leader to focus his attention on higher matters. .....his speech smacked of the partisan rancor he has suggested he was put on this earth to overcome."

Bill Mahr exploited his audiences taste for juvenile humor
"In the monologue of his most recent HBO show, Maher noted that Palin has five children including an infant “that has Down syndrome. She had it when she was 43 years old. And it looks a lot like John Edwards.”
Looks and sounds like mockery to me.

There is a 63 page doc on the internet that is the democrats vetting of Palin in 2006 when she ran for Gov....it looks like it is real...there's some scary stuff in it.

This Clinton back is also for Sarah.
Why? she is a happy smiling accomplished woman who means what she says.. Then on the other hand you have Michelle - the sour hate America, hate white people, woman who they have to keep quiet. By the way can someone show me where she and the children even visited with the white g grandmother?
BHO will not do all he has promised . The health insurance will be instituted by Hillary in the Senate, not BHO or McCain. As to the Supreme Court, the democrats will also have control over who is put on the supreme court. there are liberals who are also can be /or are asgood or bad as right wing ones.
BHO will do or say anything to get the white house. trouble is he will not know what to do once he gets there, God help the Country. Biden said it , the presidency is not a place for learning on the job..
Lastly, people backing up BHO are the chicago machine, Soros.
Piling all over Sarah Palin and trying to discredit a woman with sexism and attacking a minor child, just does not get it in my book.. McCain and Palin have so much more to offer...

ET:
"Oh yeah, one more thing, on the drug wars.. let's cut that crap out."
The dirty little secret there ET. The Swiss very progressive with their drug solution, they provide heroin addicts with heroin. Problem with heroin you build up a tolerance and the heroin they provide is a weak form, so not to have the addicts OD. But guess what ET, the addicts over time will need a stronger dose so they then turn to the the dealers. So now the Swiss have created 2 problems. 1. By condoning heroin use they are creating more addicts. 2. By giving them a weaker form of heroin and making more addicts helps the black market sell more heroin. Plus they keep them in a certain area where the can shoot up. Pretty cool huh, and who do you think picks up this tab. The addicts? Hell no, the working Swiss. Yeah you Europeans really have a good grip on how to handle the drug problem.

"Meanwhile, a city-appointed citizens' committee studying where to put a new sports complex agreed that the land near the airport was the best place for a city-owned hockey rink and turf court. City voters in 2002 approved a half-percent sales tax hike to pay for the new facility. "

This story compares the national polls with the state by state polls. Good news for Democrats. The author's theory is it will be fought out in the midwest
While there are still a few national events ahead - most importantly three presidential debates - both campaigns will concentrate their efforts on a handful of states that can flip the Electoral College numbers on election day.
"Now McCain and Obama are going to spend the final two months fighting for a relatively small number of white, working-class voters," Schnur said. "Most of the action is going to be in states where you can see a Big-10 football game, places like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota."

Are Evangelicals Really Sold on Palin?
Sure, John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin to be his running mate fully consumed a GOP convention that was supposed to be focused on thumping Barack Obama over the head. And it may have raised questions about McCain's own judgment and seriousness. But, as we have been told ad nauseam since the surprise choice was announced last Friday, Palin has already provided one unquestionable, invaluable assist to the Republican campaign: with one sweep of her perfectly manicured hand, she has supposedly erased McCain's Evangelical problem and united the base that proved so key to George W. Bush's victory in 2004.....

I have been lurking for about a year now and enjoy this site much more than i should,I have always thought that Mr Crawford was an outstanding addition to any news show that he was on. I used to watch tv for all my news information, but have not done so for about 5 months now. I come here to listen to all of you, and go to the sites that you refer, in doing so I feel that I'm better informed.I have added these to NPR, JIM LEHER,C SPAN and a few others, so I don't need tv except for breaking news or noise company. I have really enjoyed coming here and have learned a lot from most of you, I even used a joke that was posted (gave CQ credit) it was a big hit. Please stop all the bs back a forth stuff, 2 of the ones that I enjoy are not here, Patsi and 9/11. I have never voted for a D or an R in all my life so you don't have to figure out which side I'm on, as a matter of fact i enjoy your off political topics (i do like political history) more than your constant back and forth garbage. Patsi, 9/11 just ignore that a hole and come back, Jamie please keep all that info coming, have learned a lot from you-love your site too. will keep to mostly lurking, Thank you all.
