The Palin Syndrome

| | Comments (157)

Call it what happens when someone gets more than their 15 minutes of fame -- and what seemed like a rising star becomes a fiery crash.

palin_sarah.jpgThe Palin Syndrome. It sounds like a science fiction movie, the made-for-tv or direct-to-dvd variety where studio heads only pay for the cheesiest special effects.

Sarah Palin is crashing. Less than two weeks ago the Republican vice presidential nominee burst into our living rooms like the fresh breeze we enjoy once turning off the air conditioner and opening the windows on that first day of September when the heat breaks.

But now the Alaska governor is turning out to be exactly what some suspected in the beginning - a false breeze. As quickly fleeting as the rosy cheeks that will probably disappear as she has little time for the tanning booth installed in her governor's mansion.

  2. As long as people keep talking about her, she is still in spotlight. Charlie Gibson did not help her with his interview. He did his best to put her in an unfavorable light. As for the troopergate - if he tasered a young child and threatened to kill his father-in-law ( by the way he admitted to this), he should have not only been fired, he should have been run out of the country as well.

Pat, Thanks for linking that article. It's so nice to read something that hits it right once in a while. I get so tired of being manipulated by the media.

"....Obama's campaign is rootless, reactive and panicky. At every stage since securing the nomination, it has seemed fearful of missteps and unsure of its own organizing principle. So it has invariably adopted the Democratic conventional wisdom of the moment."

"..... Obama could attempt to "beat back the politics of fear, and doubt, and cynicism." He could try to build a coalition that "stretches through red states and blue states." He could reject "the politics where we tear each other down instead of lifting this country up."

"The candidate who said those words the night he won the Iowa caucuses did pretty well. But whatever the outcome of this presidential election, that candidate is no longer in the race.?"

  18. Troopergate.

1.Walt Monegan -- public safety commissioner-- got fired for insubordination on budget matters. Sarah as governor could fire Monegan for wearing 2 different color socks if she so decided. The public safety commissioner serves at her pleasure.

    2. The trooper in question, Mike Wooten, was never fired. There was an internal affairs investigation and the allegations: Wooten tazered his 10 year old step-child, drinking while on duty, and uttering death threat to his father-in-law were investigated and proven correct. Wooten punishment for these misconducts, he received a 5 day suspension. This all occurred before Sarah Palin became governor.

    3. Sarah Palin is not cooperating because she has not been subpoenaed. Her staff and her husband are cooperating because they have been subpoena. However Alaska's attorney general says state employees subpoenaed in the investigation of Gov. Sarah Palin will not testify.

This nothing more than another D witch hunt, trying to smear and malign the very popular Sarah Palin.

Tell the 592,000 newly unemployed workers from August, and the 9.4 million total unemployed how cheap gas is. What do they say, figures don't lie, but liars figure? I don’t get involved in any offsite efforts to shape discussion, or direct who comes or who goes. Whatever I’ve got to say, I say it right here. I do prefer reasonably civil dialogue, and think I’ve made that quite clear many times. Beyond that, my only job is to create the daily columns and videos that I am paid to do. I am not paid to monitor or direct the comments section. But I do stay involved because I enjoy the vigorous debates and sense of community we’ve created. When the comments section descends into mindless chaos or childish tantrums, I am sorry about it, but I keep doing my job, hopeful that, as always seems to happen, soon we will shift shapes again and the comments will be worth reading." So now the gold standard for cooperation with ethics probes in GOP land is whether you've been subpoenaed?

"Five Republican state legislators filed suit Tuesday to end the bipartisan investigation into Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's firing of the public safety commissioner even though the vice-presidential candidate once said she welcomed the probe into allegations of abuse of power.

"The lawsuit called the investigation "unlawful, biased, partial and partisan.'' None of the legislators who filed the suit in Anchorage Superior Court serves on the bipartisan Legislative Council that unanimously approved the investigation."

  39. Fry, you cherrypick your data by defining the time period you think is the rosiest and I'll cherrypick mine - I said the data you posted was correct. Your time period is no less arbitrary than mine - why not choose the past 24 months or 5 years or ten for that matter? Or use 9/11 as a starting point - or January 2001? It makes no difference - gas is expensive, and is driving the price of everything that it touches up - which is why the Fed would not lower rates again - fear of inflation that is being driven largely by the price of fuel, an you know it.

    I have a meeting - later.

  69. Fry, you're obviously not a trial attorney. The tactic with respect to the other side's argument is to show that the other side is trying to show you something that is hand picked to make things look better (or worse) than they are.

In this case, oil's rapid rise started in 2001 - but you didn't want to start there because looking at oil and gas from when they were $30 a barrel and less tahn $1.50 a gallon only 7 years ago doesn't support your copnclusion that oil is cheap. Anything that triples in value in less than 7 years isn't going to appear cheap to anyone who's bought it over that period, [particularly when inflation and real wages have remained practically flat over that period. All your argument does is reflect that crude oil price alone doesn't determine the price of gas, but it obviously affects it. And in what rational world would one determine that a commodity's value should be measured against the price of the raw material used to produce it? The costs of refining and delivery - to say nothing of the record profits in the oil industry that reflect their own cynical take on what the price of gas should be also affect the price.

It's a poor attorney that lets the other side define his or her argument - maybe a criminal defense attorney who gets the benefit of a the "beyond a reasonable doubt" standard can get away with that approach, but no other trial attorney could. The jury decides which side is presenting the facts they think are valid, not the attorney who attempted to frame the argument.

    See you in court, not.

Now, I'm out for a few hours.

NEW YORK -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton dropped out of a planned rally outside the United Nations next week after learning that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would also be in the crowd protesting the appearance of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The rally -- which includes prominent political and religious leaders, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel -- is being organized by a coalition of American Jewish organizations, under the umbrella group the National Coalition to Stop Iran Now

An Unhealthy Impact on Local Reporting
Topics: advertising | health | journalism
Source: Columbia Journalism Review, September 9, 2008
"A hospital complains about a reporter and pulls ads from the paper. The paper reassigns him. The paper -- offered three chances -- declines to deny that one caused the other," summarizes the Columbia Journalism Review. CJR was following up on a Wall Street Journal article about Carilion Health System, which is Roanoke, Virginia's sole healthcare provider. Since Carilion established a local monopoly, "health-insurance rates in Roanoke have gone from being the lowest in the state to the highest." In 2006, independent local doctors concerned about Carilion's impact on the community and their practices launched the "Coalition for Responsible Healthcare." Roanoke Times healthcare reporter Jeff Sturgeon reported on the controversy. But the paper "moved Mr. Sturgeon off the health-care beat after Carilion complained repeatedly about his coverage. Carilion says it communicated its displeasure to the paper's editors, but never asked that Mr. Sturgeon be reassigned. Carilion withdrew most of its advertising from the paper, but says it did that as part of a reallocation of its ad budget." Roanoke Times' managing editor told CJR, "We feel like we cover Carilion better than any other news media organization." But he wouldn't explain Sturgeon's reassignment to transportation, saying, "We don't get into personnel decisions and why we change beats."

    The Campaign in the Classroom
    By Kenneth Bernstein

" I am shameless. When I encounter someone who I think might be of interest to my students, I ask, even beseech, them to come to my classes. In the past I have had such journalistic notables as David Broder of The Washington Post, Candy Crowley of CNN and Chuck Todd of MSNBC, as well as campaign and congressional committee chiefs of staff and candidates for federal office. After the elections my students will hear from two House members from other states. I have parents who work in the government, in politics — or cover both as journalists — and some who are lobbyists. Several have already agreed to come, but that is later in the year. When I let students know that we will have such visitors, it can encourage some to learn more in order to better engage in dialog with our visitors. ""

  104. I consider myself a realist and had stated on this site since last fall that Obama would be the nominee and that he would "never pick" Hillary as his VP. Though I support McCain I believed he has little chance to win, yet Obama's weakness was so evident that the closeness of the race tests all rationale. With this financial crisis looming it only adds to Obama's advantage IMO.

I have been circumspect when I speak of Obama and have little difficulty in praising him and paying him his due. Recently when BO went to Europe and met with world leaders, he looked like a statesmen, self assured and confident in his mastery, which belied his inexperience, yet Obama strode with an ease and comfort with fellow dignitaries giving forth a positive impression of himself and of our country.

The pinnacle of BO's triumphant tour was his speech in front of 80,000 adoring, cheering fans, yet there was an imperceptible discordancy, a disquiet that pervaded those festivities like Bavarian sausage on a bagel. When BO returned from his rock star performance, he quickly returned to the campaign trail. Suddenly he found himself thrust amongst strangers, alien, yet recognizable, his fellow citizens of the rust belt and Appalachia, the Wal-mart moms, coal miners, and Reagan democrats. Obama was viewed cooly, with suspicion and perceived he was "not one of them," and when he promised them, much and all. a panoply, like a carnival barker his massage failed to take hold.

Obama "deigned" to seek out "these people," blue collar mostly, and forced by geography, forced by necessity, and even forced against his inclinations. These ordinary citizens could see what the Europeans could not, Obama's "pride," unchecked and pervasive, and found him wanting and "detached" from their lives and concerns. They instinctively knew Obama "was not one of them, and found his entreaties hard to swallow, much like "arugula.".

Many on this site often decry what has BO accomplished?

To those I say please don't sell Obama short, he's succeeded in casting Bill Clinton as a racist, polarized our people by color, age, sex, geography, city and rural, rich and poor. Obama who walked so comfortably with the worlds leaders, yet stumbles in Appalachia and the rust belt. A complicated man of many parts, small and ?

  131. This nothing more than another D witch hunt, trying to smear and malign the very popular Sarah Palin.

    Posted by: FryDaddy | September 17, 2008 8:12 AM

Yes another D witch hunt, like Whitewater, replacing a neutral special prosecutor with a right wing activist out to derail a sitting President. Yes it's another D witch hunt, like prying into the private sex lives of people when the original charges didn't take.

    Damn those D's

  135. My name is Alicia.

Yes it is, and I used it the last time I replied to you. But I see I missed some of your posts.

Here is a questions for you, and they are straight forward questions, nothing tricky.

    1. How m,any votes did HRC receive during the primary.
    2. how many did BHO receive during the primary.

Why wouldn't those dedicated HRC supporters write in her name?

Why hasn't there been a ground swell of PO HRC supporters organizing such a demonstration?

If you, not you personally, but you the HRC supporters were so displeased by the way HRC was treated, how BHO was push to the head of the line, and knowing that HRC is the more qualified candidate no questions asked, why would they settle for 2nd best? BHO is less than 2nd best, but it is what it is.

People are always complaining about the system, but when they are given the chance to really shake things up, they settle for the same old thing. And that is why I see D females as abused women, you come back crawling to those who have abused you.

When you lose come Nov, remember you had a real chance to change things, and you settled for the same old spoon feed crap. This is who you got to vote for.

Posted by: FryDaddy Author Profile Page | September 17, 2008 12:57 PM

  136. Bear,

The D party didn't want race to be part of their campaign, but it is the D party who keep talking about BHO's race. You did read the link didn't you??? That quote came from, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, who is the D governor of Kansas.

    Posted by: FryDaddy | September 17, 2008 8:45 AM

Bear, notice how he ignores your question about McInsane and the Powerpuff Girl being "100% American". I would too. How can even FD defend the indefensible?

  137. tt,
Fry, AIG got the financial influx and their stock's still down.

Yeah, so? Your for bigger gov't doesn't get much bigger than this.

Posted by: FryDaddy Author Profile Page | September 17, 2008 12:58 PM

  138. "...in my part of Texas, people refer to McCain and Palin as 100% American...I assume these people are referring to them being white?"
bear, you're probably right; but giving them the benefit of doubt, it might be that it's just too hard in texas twang to say "scots/irish/english/german- or eurowhatever-american" in one breath.
    Posted by: patd | September 17, 2008 9:01 AM

Patd you are being overly generous. With all the right wing hand wringing that Barack Obama has dual citizenship and a secret Muslim identity and probably his own little decoder ring found in a box of cereal, refering to the Repugs' candidates as "100% American" is clear in intent and meaning.

Similar to Carly ( except she didn't get pick for VP) Fiorina....complaining about Tina Fey

I wish Andera Mitchell would have asked Cary if she thought she could run the country? That would have been an interesting answer to hear...after everything else Carly said.

FryDaddy you are nothing but a repulsive bully. You owe Alicia an apology. I bet you were the one picking on kids littler than you in school to make up for your own feeble ego.

  143. happy birthday constitution! You will recieve a late birthday present in January as Bush finally steps down for good leaving you a chance to heal from all that abuse.

  145. But I am sure you would agree with me, women shouldn't be abused or accept abuse in any form???

    Posted by: FryDaddy | September 17, 2008 10:54 AM

That is a different tone than you used with Alicia. I agree with your statement here and no, they should not be abused in any form, including on a blog.

Posted by: EuroTom Author Profile Page | September 17, 2008 1:07 PM

  146. Is that how it works? WOW I'm impressed. Never heard of such a thing, that must be a secret tactic that only you high end attorneys know about. You don't mind if I relay this secret to some of my attorney associates. I can tell you right here and now, your legal minded brilliance will utterly dazzle them.

    Posted by: FryDaddy | September 17, 2008 11:56 AM

FD, all you seem able to do is attack anyone and everyone who doesn't agree with you... And for some of us that has gotten pretty old. I've dealt with bullies like you before and know how they tick. As for your "attorney associates", I am sure it is some sort of "secret society". Got a dark room dungeon in your house?" The way you talk I can see you with a hood and all the accessories.

  149. SolarCreate, you are kind !!! We need more voices like yorus!

Posted by: EuroTom Author Profile Page | September 17, 2008 1:12 PM

  150. Fry -- The answer is simple. As much as I'm upset about what happened in my primary, I'm still a Democrat. I've been repeatedly roughed up pretty badly by GOPs in the past and I've never forgotten it. I'm under no illusions that the game of politics is a fair fight, it's not. So I'm not open to the GOP when it now speaks with it's soothing voice, "Come here little lady, you were treated so mean by those nasty boys in the Obama team. We like you now because you will help us win. See? We even got ourselves a girl on the ticket. We're Feminists now!"
(Yeah right, buddy. I think I'll stick with the devils I know.)

Bottom line -- You're right. I really don't like Obama. But you know what, Fry Daddy? I absolutely can't stand McCain.

So I'm holding my nose and voting Obama. I'm not working for him or giving him money -- I'll leave that to the true believers. But there is absolutely nothing you can say that will make me like McCain or the GOP -- who are against everything I'm for.

  154. Please, Sarah Palin? Oh, and by the way, well done using yahoo to conduct state business. Works well to side step any investigation into abuse of power. She tore a page from the Bush administration on that one. This woman is a JOKE, a scary joke, but a joke nonetheless.

If your ready to become a bible banging evangelical, believe that the world is around 4000 years old (which would mean that that humans, basically put them on a leash like a pet -yabadabadooo), and that a bunch of old hacks in Washington should decide how many babies you have, then by all means vote McCain/Palin. Hey, what the heck it is easier than actually thinking!
