John McCain's independent-sounding convention speech and stunning vice presidential pick seems to have persuaded many voters that he can be an agent of change. Gaining ground against Barack Obama on this score is driving McCain's resurgence in polls.
More than half of Americans now see each candidate as potentially effective in changing the way the government works in Washington, according to a Gallup survey. Obama still leads McCain in voter perceptions of their ability to change things (61-to-54 percent), but the Democrat no longer owns the label.
McCain's growing competitiveness for the change vote is especially dangerous for Obama because he is so far behind on the experience front. In a recent Associated Press survey asking who had the right experience to be president, McCain drew 80 percent to Obama's 46 percent (just five points ahead of GOP running mate Sarah Palin).
Obama's biggest challenge right now is to undo the effects of a Republican nominating convention that successfully branded McCain as a change agent. The Arizona senator emphasized his independence in a widely-viewed acceptance speech and chose a vice presidential contender who comes across as anti-establishment.
No matter what you think about Palin, there is no denying that McCain's decision was unconventional. It's being called a game changer.
McCain has at least proven to be an agent of change for his own campaign.

Craig: Yes he seems to have done that w/Palin .. even though they say "change" , I kept thinking he was tryng for that title of old ... "Maverick" .. again ... got an email from a friend .. it had both BO & Palin's facts ... shows you who has the real experience ... BO lost ...

If John McCain is elected, he will probably be a 1 term president. Therefore, he doesn't have to kiss any butt. I see Obama as a Washington outsider who desperately wants to be an insider and will do anything to please the inner circle(media,K Street, congressional leaders). McCain and Palin are more likely to be the "agents of change."

This wall street journal article has a different perspective. McCain has "odd fans". His jailers at the Hanoi Hilton say they endorse McCain as they know and trust him and Vietnam needs a strong America.
An interesting read.

ABC's 20/20 show last night had Sarah Palin trying to show that McCain and she are for changing things in Washington. She ticked off 3 things. The media sure are not letting up on her, in fact Charlie looked so grim and unsmiling in that first video, it was clear to see he did not particularly like her or so it appeared. She has an 80% approval ratings as a governor. Cannot help but feel that she will just continue to make McCain stronger.. thought they had a rally in New Mexico today but it does not show on website. They are to be in Ohio on Tuesday. Now that can be interesting. See if the crowds increase or decrease. If her interview hurt or helped.

Perhaps tje greatest coup of the unelected president and his handlers was, as usual, a dubious metaphor. All on his own he has declared a war on terrorism, a nonsensical notionlike a war on dandruff. To resist terrorism is the norm for any government, a response best accomplished by international police and intelligence services. So why was the inappropriate word "war" used? Because only in wartime can the executive gain maximum power over the American people by replacing the checks and balances of the Constitution with an emergency apparatus currently called "homeland security," Relying on ad hoc bits of incoherent legislation much of the Bill of Rightscan be suspended because This is War, which it is not: at this point the victims of 9/11 are invariably exploited, but 9/11 was the work of religious zealots and not of a country, and there can be no actual war without a country, particularly when we are faced with criminal gangs given to suicide. To assume wartime powers without a war is something new under the American sun, requiring a blizzard of lies.

It was reported way back in the last campaign he ran that he cannot type and dictates or uses oral means for communications. This is due to his stay as a POW.
It is also said he cannot comb his own hair very well as his arms will not reach.

My friend Marc refers to this as his "quote of the day" from Wonder Woman herself, Lynda Carter, who was recently asked by Philadelphia magazine how she felt about the media calling the Republican vice-presidential candidate the "new Wonder Woman":
"Don’t get me started. She’s the anti-Wonder Woman. She’s judgmental and dictatorial, telling people how they’ve got to live their lives. And a superior religious self-righteousness . . . that’s just not what Wonder Woman is about. Hillary Clinton is a lot more like Wonder Woman than Mrs. Palin. She did it all, didn’t she?"
I'd take Lynda Carter for Vice-President. She's far more qualified than the Powerpuff Girl.

re: His actions don't support that---I forgot that he moved DNC operations. But on the other hand Ted Kennedy, Tom Daschle, Dick Gephardt are the epitome of Washington insiders and as I recall they were pulling the strings during primary season to get rid of the Clintons.
Your other point about the lack of DC insiders in his inner circle-who is his inner circle? I've seen friends and family of John McCain,Cindy McCain.Joe Biden, and Sarah Palin interviewed on TV many times. College friends, military friends, neighbors, etc.--who are the Obama's friends and family? Where are they? Who do they go to dinner and a movie with(before he was running for POTUS) . If regular people knew more about them, they may be able to relate to him more.

random episodes of success in warfare:
Herodotus:
Besides this slaughter of the Thessalian foot when it was blockading them, the Phocians had dealt a blow to their horse upon its invading their territory, from which they had never recovered. There is a pass near the city of Hyampolis, where the Phocians, having dug a broad trench, filled up the void with empty wine-jars, after which they covered the place with mould, so that the ground all looked alike, and then awaited the coming of the Thessalians. These, thinking to destroy the Phocians at one sweep, rushed rapidly forward, and became entangled in the wine-jars, which broke the legs of their horses.

We owned an end unit on the 15th floor of our gulf coast condo in FL. Had windows on three sides--put hurricane shutters on every opening.
We felt safe in the big winds, but we new that all the infrastructure in our small city would be destroyed by surge when a direct hit came.
We feel much more comfortable here in Columbia.

Sturge - I gather my thought from statements made by the posters....they have said do much.......
Immature - was definitely the wrong description......obviously, the more I think about it there are so many words that would better describe the posts I have read here....I'll just take the heat for "immature" lol

I cant see how calling people names, or disparaging their thought processes will lead them to espouse the views which you hold dear.....after all there are as many views as there are people......my first thought if I found my ideas called "immature spitefullness" would be a curt "focus on your own situation, please."
Posted by: sturgeone | September 13, 2008 10:44 AM
I can see where palin's views are rife for disparaging.....she's seeking high office......I can see where any candidate's views are in the same position.....but what about ordinary people on a blog?
What's the point in calling them anything......even if they change their mind, has anything been won or gained?
an argument won on a blog.......what is that good for?
Posted by: sturgeone | September 13, 2008 10:49 AM
Sturge , maybe, however.....many have stated that they are "sending a message" ( in so many words ) ..... and voting against rather than for....( in some cases against their own beliefs - as they have said)
I hear what you are saying - which is judgmental on your part....but that doesn't really matter.....opinions and judgments... a fine line in between
one can choose to pick apart every last syllable - or one can choose to "get the point" being expressed. In depends on how you like to spend your time.
Have a great ... off to a polo match

Sarah Palin…“knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America.”
Senator John McCain
And just yesterday we learned that John Mc Cain's staff includes these two fellows :
Berman, who's McCain's national finance co-chair and one of the Arizona Senator's leading bundlers, is a lobbyist with Ogilvy Government Relations, which has been paid millions of dollars for lobbying by the Chevron and Hess corporations, according to disclosure forms. The second official, John Green, who is McCain's chief liaison to Congress, also was with Ogilvy and worked on those same contracts until joining the campaign. - Talking Points Memo
Since the good Senator's vice presidential pick is in his own words, is one of the top experts on energy in America. She needs to be asked about how she feels about a campaign running on a reform ticket employing 2 lobbyists from the very companies that were such a corrupting influence on the people who managed the collection of America's oil royalties from these very companies.
Maybe it's that he needs Chevron for more photo-ops on it's drilling rigs.

’m Linda, Fly Me
Published on January 23, 2003
Photo by Chris Kleponis/ZU7MA The national press corps didn't bother to tell you why Tom Daschle, the Democrats' Senate leader, decided at the 11th hour not to run for president: In the end, he calculated that he couldn't survive scrutiny of his persistent service to the clients of his wife. Linda Daschle has been one of the airline industry's top lobbyists for two decades — when she wasn't busy running the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which explains why, just 11 days after the 9/11 attacks, her husband rushed through the Democratic Senate, which he controlled, the $15 billion bailout for the airline industry, a notorious taxpayer rip-off.
Right after then-Congressman Tom Daschle dumped his first wife for a younger, prettier one, the former Miss Kansas Linda Daschle went to work as chief lobbyist for the Air Transport Association, the airline industry's main lobby; she then became the senior vice president of the American Association of Airport Executives; and these days hangs her hat at the pricey top Washington law/lobby shop Baker, Donelson, Bearman & Caldwell, headed by former GOP Senate leader and ex–Reagan chief of staff Howard Baker — where she peddles influence on behalf of a long list of lucrative aviation clients. The clients for whom Linda lobbied brought more than $5.86 million into Baker, Donelson in one three-year period, including Northwest Airlines ($870,000 from 1997 through 2001) and American Airlines ($1.26 million in fees). Northwest was already teetering on the edge of bankruptcy even before 9/11. American, which has had six fatal crashes since 1994 (not counting 9/11) and has been repeatedly fined by the FAA for a skein of safety violations, had the reputation as the most unsafe major U.S. carrier.
Yet these two clients of Linda Daschle's got nearly $1 billion from the airline bailout her husband pushed into law — thanks to which Northwest (which was the second largest contributor to Senator Daschle's 1998 campaign

"Sometimes you have to make a selection from a serious of unsatisfactory choices"
OD, This is what gripes me (and possibly your friend) is that I have been doing this since 1968. This was the year that I finally got to actually love a candidate since RFK. Instead, this year will be like every other Presidential campaign. I'm stuck with the Democrat again, but I still don't really like him, I don't like the party that screwed over my candidate even more, and I really, really dislike the alternatives.
Grouchy only begins to describe it.

If you can't win reelection to the Senate, especially when you were the Minority Leader, best able to bring money to the home folk, you don't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning nationally.

"The expansion of early voting is posing a dilemma for the campaign teams, with decisions having to be made about whether to time ads and rallies to coincide with them or whether to delay drives until nearer November 4....
The Obama campaign is encouraging as many of its supporters as possible to vote early, fearful that would-be Democratic voters might turn away on election day if facing long queues on November 4 because of Republican challenges to voter eligibility."

with 30% voting early, gordo's dire surprise predictions may come in to play sooner than october.

Craig,
Flight reservations you have a choice. Fly in to San Francisco or San Jose and short hop to Monterey and I can pick you up at the airport or fly in to one of the main airports and rent a car for the approx two hour drive to Monterey.
If you want to turn it into an adventure, take 17 to Santa Cruz and hit the boardwalk before driving south. Does Toby like roller coasters? :-)

oldseahag - that is commendable to make the effort, I hope that you continue feel that passion and work towards your goal. Sometimes it can be disheartening when people turn a deaf ear.
During a GE they might have their hands full with the task at hand, maybe after this is over they will listen more readily? who knows...

The October Atlantic Monthly arrived yesterday. The cover story, by Jeffrey Goldberg, talks about McCain's relationship with war, and why he views Iraq as he does.
It will add to both supporters' and detractors' understanding of him--something that's important if we want to believe ourselves credible arbiters of America's future.

Even though I have opted for the Obama vote, I totally understand your friend's feelings about the DNC. That farce and obscenity of a committee meeting with the stealing of four electoral votes just because they had the power to do so was the last straw for me. OldSeaHag, I certainly understand your position. However, I get the sense that most of the angry Hillary supporters have buckled down and decided to vote Obama/Biden because the alternative is too horrible to comprehend.
Hey Craig, if you are still around, what is your take on Obama's refusal to seriously consider Hillary as his running mate? People accuse him of being arrogant (isn't that a prerequisite for any politician?). I am a bit mystified that he banked on Biden who comes from one of the smallest states in the Union so he does very little "electorally" for Obama, assuming we believe that VP candidates can make their home states more competitive come the general. You Craig wrote about the "shotgun marriage" possibility and I really thought that Obama would offer the seat to Hillary. A couple more questions:
Did Obama figure that Hillary supporters had nowhere else to go?
Now that a lot of people are saying it was a mistake not to choose Hillary, do you think McCain would have still chosen Palin to blunt the Hillary effect?
Do you believe that the 1/2 vote meeting of the DNC has further complicated the race for Obama and the Dems?
And if you were to predict, how do you think the election will shape up come election day? Perhaps you aren't into making those kind of predictions, but I'll cop to feeling pessimistic.

Jamie,
I don't know if you've ever been asked this, but let me ask you now.
1. What should the penalty have been for violating party rules?
2. Were the players in this soap opera's positions reversed, what would your thoughts be about how things played out had they been in Sen Clinton's favor?
Posted by: Bear

Jamie it bothers me too, but as a lifelong Democrat, I can't turn my back on my heritage going back to my Norwegian-American Minnesotan roots. I don't give money to the parties or the candidates anymore. I resent too much the millions that the "professional political consultants" hog home after the elections are done Face it... politics are big business and I don't think people scraping along to make ends meet should finance these "professional" monetary gluttons.

1. What should the penalty have been for violating party rules?
Posted by Bear ...
Bear you didn't ask me, and I am over participating so this should be my last post today...
I can't answer the question on penalties. I don't agree at all with the same states always being able to be first to vote in primaries. I do think it was INSANE to penalize two important states like Michigan and Florida. Were the Dems so convinced that those states didn't matter because it would DEFINITELY be a Dem landslide? Taking away the votes runs counter to anything the Dems have stood for in the quest of voters rights and ending such unscrupulous activities as the poll tax!
Anyway that's my view...

"She and her partner are both so angry that their votes counted as only 1/2 a vote each that they will NOT vote Democrat at all this time. They are both extremely angry women who feel that Mr. Obama has disrespected most women voters by not seriously considering Hillary as his running mate. They decided that opening the VP slot for a woman is more important than which woman so long as that glass ceiling is finally broke through" .EuroTom
Tom,
Your friend explained so well why some women are so mad at the Democratic Party. I agree with all the things she said, plus I have some other issues to add to the list too. But I won't add them right now since I can't stay. Just wanted to say I respect you for respecting her decision (even though you disagree).

1. If the penalties had been equal for all of the states who wanted to violate the rules, then that would have been fair, but they all asked for waivers and only the states the powers that be "liked" got them. Then there were all sorts of Shenanigans about the Michigan "penalty" even though there was no necessity for candidates to remove their names from the ballot. That "all is forgiven your whole delegation (now that we have packed it with Obama delegates) will be seated was more backroom BS.
In the future, there are all sorts of changes I would make. Number one being NO Exceptions. If a state, any state, chooses to violate the agreed upon rules, it will be announced that no one needs to go to the polls because their votes will not be recognized and no delegation will be seated at the convention. Let the state parties deal with the outcry that would cause.
I would love to do away with the caucus system or at the least insist on a 50/50 caucus/primary combination. (The Republicans did this in Washington this year while the Dems stuck with Caucus only) , and not that insane Texas two step variety. As it stands now, I consider the caucus a total violation of voting rights for the majority of the public.
If the situation had been reversed, I probably would have allowed Florida simply because they were at the mercy of the Republicans. Michigan, I would have enforced the no campaigning but left all names on the ballot. Failure to place name on ballot means you don't get to guess about how many votes your "might have gotten".
Basically, no matter who wins, I come down on the side of the voters. If they don't vote you can't count them. If they do vote, you count them. Any system that makes it possible for the most people to vote without obstruction is the system that should be favored.

WASHINGTON—A conservative political forum on Saturday sold boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.
The product, Obama Waffles, was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix and sold it for $10 a box from a booth at the Values Voter Summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.

"McCain, Palin to campaign in Cedar Rapids Thursday"
http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080913/NEWS/80913021
"McCain and Democrat Barack Obama have said Iowa, carried narrowly by Republican George Bush in 2004 and Democrat Al Gore in 2000, is among the top tier of battleground states in the 2008 race with roughly seven weeks until Election Day."
This is why we have had non-stop ads for McCain and Obama for months, as well as visits from party officials, candidates, and surrogates. Take no state for granted, many are in play right now. This is why I am ignoring most polls at this time unless I can look through their methodology and deem it as sound.
Cedar Rapids is a very strong Democrat area...it will be interesting to see what size crowd the Republicans can come up with on a Thursday morning at an airport hanger in a solidly Democratic area.

Rules
Are really important in ordered society. They establish the mechanism for, and the bounds of, discourse for any particular occasion.
In debate and in councils of government, Roberts Rules generally govern.
In order to have a more informal discussion of a particular matter, I've moved to suspend the rules. This is a legitimate thing to do as it enhances the democratic process.
In the current election cycle, in the Rules Committee meeting held in May, the Committee suspended their own governing charter, not to allow a broadening of the consideration of an issue, but to curtail debate and dissent. That, in my mind, is a fraudulent abuse of parliamentary process.
I think the appropriate remedy would be a court imposed invalidation of all Committee actions subsequent to the suspension.

This man has had nothing but government care for his whole life from being the child of a Naval Officer to Veterans care to Congressional programs. Given his injuries, cancer, and lymph nodes amongst who knows what else, without that care he probably wouldn't be in any shape to run or he would be dead.
How he can stand in front of any audience and say that government health care is a bad choice is beyond me. 47 million people without the care he takes for granted makes him a total ass.

THAT is a great column. It pretty much says everything that puts me off Palin.
I like Obama well enough. He's okay. Don't think he is right for the Job just now though I would have supported him whole heartedly in four or eight years and would have liked him in the second chair as being capable of learning the ropes and moving up if necessary.
But everything about Palin nauseates me. She is the embodiment of everything I have always voted against. She may be a personable human being that I wouldn't mind having live next door, though I'm not too sure of even that because I recycle and I'm not sure she does. The idea of her being the person who would move up if the health of a 72 year old man with a history of severe medical conditions is enough to give me the creeps while awake and nightmares when asleep.

Gibson Obama interview:
How does it feel to break a glass ceiling?
How does it feel to “win”?
How does your family feel about your “winning” breaking a glass ceiling?
Who will be your VP?
Should you choose Hillary Clinton as VP?
Will you accept public finance?
What issues is your campaign about?
Will you visit Iraq?
Will you debate McCain at a town hall?
What did you think of your competitor’s [Clinton] speech?
Gibson Palin interview:
Do you have enough qualifications for the job you’re seeking? Specifically have you visited foreign countries and met foreign leaders?
Aren’t you conceited to be seeking this high level job?
Questions about foreign policy
-territorial integrity of Georgia
-allowing Georgia and Ukraine to be members of NATO
-NATO treaty
-Iranian nuclear threat
-what to do if Israel attacks Iran
-Al Qaeda motivations
-the Bush Doctrine
-attacking terrorists harbored by Pakistan
Is America fighting a holy war? [misquoted Palin]

Obama has been a candidate for 2 years, not 2 weeks. I don't think it would be too difficult to extrapolate the answers to the same questions for McCain, Obama, Biden, Clinton as we kind of know them.
Palin is new to the scene and being billed as an expert. Kind of like the scene in My Cousin Vinny when Mona Lisa is being Voir Dire'd...
Also, I've never heard Obama say he knows Canada because they are neighbors.
McCain could make that kind of claim about Mexico and people have assumed it because of his many positions on immigration...but he never claimed, "I am an expert on Mexico because you can see the country from parts of my state"

Craig,
A bit of a heads up. Just finished talking to my favorite right wing Republican and he was going on about just how energized the party regulars and volunteers are by the Palin candidacy. They have gone from dejected to elated in the space of a few weeks and are out working hard for the ticket instead of moaning and sitting it out. Also some of the down ticket races are turning in favor of Republicans as well.
They are looking hard at the polls and think that they should solidify in about 10 days to two weeks. He's betting that for the first time a VP debate could make the difference.

Bear...
re your upthread question.
Adoption fee was $200.
I went through a national Jack Russell Terrier rescue group, and it involved applications, references and screening, etc. It's a great group.
In contrast to Chopper, who I picked up from a humane society shelter in a rural county on the Gulf Coast. They were great people but the screening process basically involved me driving there, writing them a check for 60 bucks to cover his neutering and shots, and them saying "Good Luck."
So the experience can differ from case to case.

Lard,
Great looking dogs and you can't beat a rescue dog. I have posted some new pictures of my two rescue terriers on my blog if you care to look when you have recovered from the walk. We walk everyday-sometimes twice, they have a yard to play in, and they wresle every night before bed...and they are 7. I call them my 7 year old puppies...I hope they never grow up.

"As governor of Alaska she has many contacts with Canada. She has had experience working with another nation."
And don't forget, Jack, his economic adviser entered into diplomatic contact regarding Mr Obama's comments about NAFTA that were, as he told the Canadians, only for domestic consumption--what he would actually do would be something different. wink wink.

Well Jamie, I still think it was the snub of Hillary... And then McInsane was advised to do something drastic to turn around his candidacy and he found a woman to be his running mate... Plus, Dems are not good at standing up to Repug attacks. This is where Hillary would have excelled.

Barack Obama under fire for ignoring advice on how to beat John McCain
By Tim Shipman in Washington
Last Updated: 9:29PM BST 13 Sep 2008
Barack Obama and his senior advisers are under fire for ignoring the advice of Democratic senators and governors who are concerned that they do not know how to beat John McCain.
The Democratic presidential candidate's slump in the polls has sparked pointed private criticism that he is squandering a once-in-a-generation chance to win back the White House.
Party elders also believe the Obama camp is in denial about warnings from Democratic pollsters that his true standing is four to six points lower than that in published polls because of hidden racism from voters - something that would put him a long way behind Mr McCain.

Actually 7 1/2 months short of the classic 9 and most first children are two weeks late, so lets call it 7.
She was 24 and they "eloped" suddenly on August 29, 1988 and Track was born April 20, 1989.
Nothing wrong with it. A lot of marriages get started that way, but given the religious beliefs and the preference for "abstinance only" plus the pregnant daughter, you have to wonder where she is coming from. She isn't stupid, so is it "sin and be forgiven" when you fall from grace ala Swaggert?

Alicia, I work on a lot of genealogy and see a great number of marriage, birth and death certificates. A lot of first children rush into the world. A century or more ago, people got wed when they could find someone official to perform the deed. I've seen cases where the several children were baptised on the same day their parents got "married". :-)

On my father's side, I have it back to early 1700s. My mother's is split. Half of her lineage arrived from Germany just before the Civil war, but on her mother's side it goes back to the settling of VA and Maryland and then skips over the pond to England and into the Howard line, which makes me roughly umpteen zillionth in line for the throne. lol

It can also be blatant hypocrisy or don't do as I do, do as I say, or trying to shove your religious beliefs down the throats of others when you don't practice what your preach.
Given the Republican penchant for trying to ruin others (i.e. Clinton) and then getting caught with their pants down or in this case skirts up, I'm a little less charitable than I might be otherwise.

I recently was in the Fabulous Fern's in St. Paul, my old home town. There, a drunken blonde woman named Joey, who claimed to be a big shot in the local republican party and the mccain campaign, said that we should kill all the stupid people and all the people who aren't working. Joey carried a whistle on a ribbon around her neck that said, "US Marines The Few The Proud US Marines The Few...." She was ranting at two old drinking buddies of mine, light colonels, one Army, the other USAF, named Gahr and Carver. They seemed to know her, and didn't doubt that she was a republican hack. However, they didn't buy any of her scroogey, mean-spirited, bloodthirsty, "survival of the fittest" doctrine.
I asked Joey about all those stupid or unemployed women who were pregnant; killing them would also kill their precious embryos.
Joey loudly replied, "Fogc that, nobody cares about the dam' fetuses ! "
As the conversation went on I discovered that making big money, cutting taxes, and killing people who disagreed with Joey, were the really important parts of the republican platform. The rest is apparently window dressing to fool the boobs whom we ought to kill. Joey's revelations tend to confirm suspicians I have harbored since the republican party turned anti-abortion in 1978 - coincidently, the last year I ever voted for republicans.
I don't know if Joey was really a republican hack, or it was bs, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, I don't want to get too into theology with the trolls that hang out here, but I will say to xrep, your generalization of millions of people based on one conversation with one drunk one night is ridiculous. Hypocrites come in many stripes.
And Jamie, I can't justify hypocrisy. Just because some people of faith are hypocrites doesn't mean they all are. This is pretty basic stuff. The GOP panders to the religious right because they need to to with elections, not out of principle. It's all about money and power, not God.

I agree with you. I know many people of faith who live the tenets fully. My problem tends to be the hard right. They are lacking in a generosity of spirit that I associate with the best of Christianity. As far as pandering, I wonder what the deep believers would think if they actually confronted the gross manipulation of their faith solely for the purpose of power. They often vote against their best interest simply because they get sold on the God's will argument.

Jamie -- Yes, in the colonial era pre-marriage pregnancies and births were not uncommon. Courtship often involved couples bundling in bed, and as parental influence over marriage choice declined the number of pregnant brides went from below 10 percent in the 17th century to over 40 percent by the mid-18th century. He needs to speak with strength and power - why do you think Palin has all this attention? She speaks firmly - her voice is clear and crisp. He is still playing the bemused rumbling academic who pauses for JUST the right word. He must stand up and SPEAK, not talk.
Solar - your play was terrific. Again. (as our adorable four-year-old says after a rasslin' match.)

This is an empire [USA] which is on the one hand the most powerful empire that ever existed; on the other hand an empire that is crumbling - an empire that has no future ... because the rest of the world is alienated and simply because this empire is top-heavy with military commitments, with bases around the world, with the exhaustion of its own resources at home.

I would put the time and place for our fall as the White House in 1950. Harry Truman and his advisers decided that it would be a good idea to keep the United States on a full wartime basis even though there was no enemy on earth who would challenge us militarily or economically. Therefore an enemy had to be invented. The dictator Stalin fit the bill. So did atheistic and godless communism as a rival religion. But, said a republican senator to Truman, if you really want to waste all that money on the military, youre going to have to scare the hell out of the American people. With a lot of help from Congress and the likes of Henry Luce, Truman did just that.
Out of fairness to our inadvertant totalitarianism, there was an urgent economic motive in 1950. We had made our recovery from the Depression of the 1930's only when the war put everyone to work. After the war, rather than run the terrible risk of a free economy in which General Motors would have to make something people wanted, like a car, we decided to take all the revenue---two-thirds, anyway---of the federal government and put it into armaments.
Since the reading skills of the American People are the lowest in the First World, the general public is always easy prey to manipulation by television. This means that if you want to demonize drugs or the Arabs or the Japanese you do so openly in the media. You also do it subliminally. As a result, in the past two years, drugs was pushed from tenth to first place as a national worry. Aircraft carriers are needed off the coast of Colombia to intercept drug exporters. And so two-thirds of the true budget will continue to go to the government in its latest "war"---a war that will not be won because no one has any interest in winning it, ass opposed to expensively prosecuting it. The oligarchy does not care whether the citizens make themselves sick with drugs or not. What government wants is simple: total control. If this can be got by dispensing with the bill of rights, then that's a small price to pay. The whole tone of the Reagan-Bush management is one of open hostility to our ancient rights in particular and to the people in general. Today the poor, as Mr Bush might put it, are in deep doo-doo. The rich are fed up with the poor. And if the p[oor dont shape up, the rich just arent going to take it anymore.

We have to spread the truth about McCain ourselves because it's clear the corporate media won't. NOW. FAST. FURIOUS. EVERYWHERE.
We are in the two-minute drill with no timeouts. No more sitting on the sidelines and allowing the McCain campaign to rack up points with countless distortions.
As we've seen with The Real McCain 2 (nearly 4.5 million views and counting!), once the truth gets out, it's hard to stop. In the last few days we have seen a disgusting descent into the worst of sleazy smear politics. We need to spread the facts and the truth. Send this to your friends and relations, especially if they are unsure or undecided—they're more willing to believe you than a talking head!
Spread the truth. Don't wait. It starts with you.

Our military basings worldwide are the lowest they've been since before the Korean War. Our level of military funding is at an historic low as well. Our troop strength is at another low. The numbers of aircraft and ships in our inventory is also at an historic low. Lack of military strength is because we allowed our armed forces to languish.
Exhaustion of our resources at home?? Pray tell, elaborate on this. In your own words from your own ex pat point of view.

That's pretty self evident Flatus. Investment in our own communities have diminished while military spending has flourished. On top of that, the poor veterans do not even get treated right when they return from their "tours of duty". The American economy is virtually bankrupt and rather than trying to rebuild our own infrastructure, we keep on expanding our military spending and expansionist desires around the globe.

Palin 'governed from the center,' went after big oil
But in her 21 months as governor, Palin has taken few steps to advance culturally conservative causes. Instead, after she knocked off an incumbent amid an influence-peddling scandal linked to the oil industry, Palin pursued a populist agenda that toughened ethics rules and raised taxes on oil and gas companies.

Like my friend Lissa said... as a voter in Florida she refuses to vote for Obama because his campaign worked with the DNC to deny her vote in the Presidential primary. I warned about this months ago, but few took me seriously. I'm not saying this is the only reason that there is a bit of faltering in Florida, but people like Donna Brazille, acting as if they were doing the people of Florida and Michigan a big favor by giving them 1/2 of a vote, just didn't sit well with the people I know in the state. Given, that is anecdotal, but it certainly could be a factor.

How does being a smoker impact one abilities to handle the responsibilities of being command in chief?
1) diminished oxygen to the brain. Circulatory problems. Heart attack. Sickness.
2) being viewed as a ineffective hypocrite...'fullofshititis.' Very dangerous for the leader. Do as I say, not as I do. Sets a very bad example for the health of the country.

I believe the 1/2 vote here in Florida is a huge factor! My client Rose a 72 year old Dem sights this as the very reason she will vote for McCain.Rose told me last week that she and her deceased husband Bill had never voted Rep. in their lives, but that she didn't want the Democrat's to think that they couldn't count her vote and then expect her vote in Nov. Is Obama still smoking while hiding and denying it?
I've written very recently of my sympathy for Sen. Obama's difficulty in trying to quit his cigarette habit. It literally took a heart attack three years ago to get me to stop, and even so, the last time I had a craving for a cigarette was ... oh, about six seconds ago. I am certainly not one of those ex-smokers who's become completely intolerant of those who still indulge, or those who have tried to quit without success so far. And I am, and always will be, vulnerable to the possibility of resuming the habit. So I'm slow to condemn smokers.
But it's disturbing to have my suspicions renewed that Sen. Obama's not only a chronic smoker, but a chronic liar about whether he's been successful in quitting. Jake Tapper of ABC News blogged yesterday about an episode from last August in which he'd smelled cigarette smoke on Sen. Obama, despite the campaign's emphatic denials that he'd still been smoking. And Tapper was apparently reminded of that episode by Obama's vague and evasive statements on the topic of his smoking on MSNBC's Hardball Softball with Chris Matthews on Wednesday:

Today, Jeff Stier, an associate director of the American Council on Science and Health, questions the risks Obama faces following years of smoking.
In an opinion piece in Politico, Stier wrote that few people realize that even though Obama is now a former smoker, he faces a much higher risk of contracting smoking-related diseases.
"These risks did not simply disappear when he quit smoking in February 2007," Stier wrote, citing the "long-term and sometimes irreversible consequences of smoking cigarettes."
Yes, Obama claims to have quit -- and by doing so, he did reduce his risk of smoking-related disease," Stier said. "But the science tells us that it is naive to think that quitting after years of smoking returns you to the state of health of a never-smoker. In fact, after enough smoking, some health effects are irreversible. How long and how much one smokes determines the extent of health risk after quitting."
Stier estimated that Obama, who frequently chews Nicorette gum, smoked for at least 25 years, which he calculates would mean he smoked anywhere from 50,000 to 70,000 cigarettes.
"Just because he's young, looks great and exercises, doesn't mean he's completely healthy," Stier warned. "And given what an important figure he is, to ignore his smoking history is to miss an educational opportunity."

"...I'm just trying to figure out why some woman who embraced Hillary are embracing Palin, it just doesn't make any sense to me."
I was a Hillary supporter and want to respond to this comment.
I still do not know who I will vote for or if I will even vote for president. I am watching the candidates closely. I was always a passionate Democrat but now????
My comment may be a little shakey because I am recovering from recent back surgery and just went through a significant side swip from Ike. I had to ride out the storm knowing I couldn't even get up and run if I needed to.
The winds here in SW La were not as bad as they were from Rita but the flooding is much worse. I do have electricity at my home.
My camp down the road on the river may be under water and I can't check on it because of the water and my physical condition.
I really want to support Obama but I just can't yet. I am still so dissappointed with how Hillary was treated by our party. I still feel like she would have been the best candidate. I think she would have had support from both Democrats and more Republicans than Obama.
Hillary didn't deserve the treatment she got. She paid her dues and is certainly more qualified than Obama. The Democratic Party took a gamble that a young charismatic candidate would fare better than Hillary. I think he did surprisingly well up against her but he had the help of the power players in the party. If she would have had the same support she would have won. Technically I still think she did win.
Much of my professional life I have had to take a back seat to younger, less qualified and experienced men. I have been in the professional world for 36 years I don't think young women of the current generation have had to deal with this as much. Hillary's treatment gave me bad flashbacks.
Another reason I have had a hard time supporting Obama is because those of us who didn't support him have been accused of being racist. Hillary and Bill were also and that is so tragic. The worst of it comes from many of his supporters. I feel that that tactic is being supported by the Democratic Party and Obama. That is so undemocratic.
I will keep watching both candidates and maybe before the election I will have made a decision and maybe not, but I would appreciate not being called names if I don't choose Obama. I don't think it will change anyone's vote.
I will not vote for Palin because she is a woman even though it is interesting that the Republicans are willing to take a chance on a woman and it seems to be working.

My favorite cookie as a child was a "very thin" chocolate layer over marshmallow on a "thin" shortbread cookie. Naturally, they were hard to get to the shelves without cracking the thin chocolate layer.
The modern version is the "Pinwheel" with a thick chocolate coating over the marshmallow sitting on a thick cookie. HOlds up great on the shelf. Tastes awful.

They wrote in the old days that it is sweet and fitting to die for one's country. But in modern warfare there is nothing sweet nor fitting in your dying. You will die in the dirt like a dog for no good reason.

from a political columnist in today's lovuisville courier-journal:
Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., isn't exactly producing quotes that the GOP could use in a political ad.
Last week Bunning was asked by reporters whether he thought it was unusual that McCain and his vice presidential running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, were running against President Bush and the GOP.
"No, I don't find that unusual at all," Bunning said. "Why wouldn't you run against a very unpopular incumbent -- even one of your own party if he's done a lousy job."
Do you think Bush has done a lousy job? the senator was asked.
"In the last two years, I absolutely do," Bunning said.

Where Are Joe Biden's Medical Records?
04 Sep 2008 12:22 pm
It's been a while since he was nominated as a vice-presidential candidate, and we still haven't had a look at his medical history. This is the normal course of events for a person who could potentially be president next February. The press really needs to do its job and get Biden's medical records pronto. Again: this needn't be too invasive. It could even be done the way McCain's medical vetting was - reserved for a room of reporters to comb through all the major and obvious issues.

Although these statistics don't include the last few years, there has been no dramatic increase in defense spending (as a percentage of GDP) over that period.

I can't really tell from your chart if those figures are "off budget". Most of the spending on Iraq has fallen into that column as the result of "emergency spending" appropriations with money borrowed from China et al.

Here is a nice counter you can watch run as the Iraq costs go up. Then there are links that show what we could have bought instead.
I thought the whole idea of borrowing money was to have something to show for the purchase that you could hang on to into the future (i.e. a house, car, education etc.).
Unfortunately, our government isn't borrowing for the purposes of infrastructure that will benefit the American public well into the future (roads, bridges, high speed rail, schools, alternative energy etc.). We are borrowing so that we can make things go boom and kill people. Sort of like borrowing against the mortgage in order to have a great 4th of July.

WILFRED OWEN
Dulce et Decorum Est
- best known poem of the First World War
(with explanatory notes)
DULCE ET DECORUM EST
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped5 Five-Nines that dropped behind.
Gas!7 Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound'ring like a man in fire or lime . . .
Dim, through the misty pane and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.

Moonpies are still too heavy. The ones I remember were so light they practically cracked if you looked at them sideways. Even the marshmallow was airier.
I put up the origin of "scot-free" above, but in your drunken state I'll make it easy: "scot" was old English for tax. "scot-free" meant not taxable. To get off "scot-free", meant you did have to pay taxes on your property for whatever reason, and of course has now come to mean to escape without penalty.

Has anyone here watched the two specials on Palin, the ones on CNN and MSNBC? The more I get to know about her the better I like her. The thing I like the least is that she is a Republican but she has taken on powerful members of her own party at the risk of political suicide. Anyone know if Obama has done that. Alaska Women Reject Palin’ Rally is HUGE!
Never, have I seen anything like it in my 17 and a half years living in Anchorage. The organizers had someone walk the rally with a counter, and they clicked off well over 1400 people (not including the 90 counter-demonstrators). This was the biggest political rally ever, in the history of the state. I was absolutely stunned.

FEAR Ruth. They want to spread fear in the eyes of people. He is "old" so he will die and he "had" cancer, so he will die....And governor Palin will not be equipped to lead. This is the fear card which is being played, unfortunately it has come from BO, so it will not be covred like that in the media.

This media is entertaining, you gotta give it to them.
They just silenced Joe Biden, and made him a non factor in the race up to this point. John McCain is trying to weasel himself into the campign and some of the time he is lucky... But morover it is a contest between BO and SP...Amazing.
I mean, pick up one tabloid in the US this week without a cover on SP.....They just make us want more, and if you are not strong, you fall into that immediate trap of them.
I mean, quesion the woman on her credentials or merits or whatever you want to call it. I give a rat´s ass if her daughter is accidentally pregnant at the age of 17...... It can happen. But to focus on that, makes her more important then she is.
Anyway, I still think team BO can pull this one off.
It will be interesting. One of the most important moments will be in the VP debate. For sure.....
