Palin Boosts McCain's Prime-Time Readiness

| | Comments (239)

palin.jpgWhen it became clear that joint appearances by John McCain and Sarah Palin were not a temporary post-convention phenomenon, some thought it was done out of fear that Palin is not ready for prime time.

But could it be that GOP operatives are really worried that it is McCain who is not ready for prime time?

For starters, it is doubtful that McCain could draw 10,000-plus crowds without his running-mate phenomenon on stage. Before picking Palin, McCain was lucky to draw 1,000 people to campaign events. At a minimum, the Palin factor increases those numbers by five times or more.

Avoiding the embarrassment of lackluster crowds is not the only reason for McCain to campaign every day with Palin. Focusing on Palin also minimizes the amount of time that McCain is out there campaigning and making mistakes. It was on his own in small-crowd, loosey-goosey town halls where McCain suffered some of his worst goofs, such as implying that he would keep troops in Iraq for 100 years.

The current McCain campaign formula for rallies gets the job done for now. They open with Palin revving up enthusiasm to a fever pitch -- and then, for McCain's best applause lines, he only needs to point at her and say, "Isn't she great?"

Where's Joe Biden on Sarah Palin? Why is the Dem nominee for Pres.taking on the Rep. VP nominee?Doesn't it make everyone compare the experience of Obama top of the ticket vs Palin 2nd spot on the Rep. ticket?

  4. The news doesn't cover what Biden says about Palin - unless it is some type of gaffe.

I think the Obama campaign probably made the decision that Obama had to take on Palin for a couple of days - get some of the truth out about her record - and then he can move on...

I agree if he spends too much time on her - he is making a mistake.

That being said, a debate is something else. Biden has said he is used to dealing and working with women in Senate . He will be firm but not abusive, imo.

  11. Why is McCain's teenage daughter allowed to say with impunity that only her family knows war?

If that's the case, why would John McCain sign on to a completely incompetent war plan that Bush put forward? Why did it take him so long to question Rummy? Why was he so nervous that the surge would be a failure?

If Obama said that, there would be a Fox New lynching Posse getting rounded up. Instead Meghan's comment get's little response from the media.

  16. Craig,

You are on to something about Palin having to hold McCain's hand on the trail. There is almost a Driving Mr. Daisy feel to this...

The biggest plus is that McCain no longer appears on state with Lieberman and Lindsay Graham.

At some point I wonder if people will question if McCain has issues to need someone with him all the time. I suspect were someone to question it, they will go back to his 5 solitary years at the Hanoi Hilton...

Let him be. This is good. Maybe it will purify DNC after this debacle. Heads will roll and DNC will make a fresh new start, with people who actually care for the country. Sometimes we have to fall hard as a country, start form scratch and build on a true and solid foundation.

  25. Bear - the only specific story I ever heard was that Grant was straight but pretty doggone kinky.

Palin is getting attention because she is emphatic. She looks straight in the eye and points her finger and pounds her fist, and says, Yes, I want to do such-n-such. What about it? She doesn't mind her opponents thinking she is un-reasonable.

Obama doesn't have to yell , but he has to get some grit in his voice and be emphatic - and I DON'T mean saying Yes we can. He is too convinced of his own great talent for speaking, which I frankly do not like.

His ramblin' days should be over. He has to sit up straight, not round-shouldered and comfy, and state.

The independents are flocking to JmC, a difference in polling numbers of 15%.. I mean, DNC could´ve seen this coming.

As I Said. The sad thing is that they USED an AA to get rid of the Clintons and now it is all going to blow up in their face. Sadly we AA´s will have to wait for ages to ever get a viable candidate yet again. Thank You to the DNc elite.

  35. Bear - I get your point and agree for the most part, but I don't want him to sound stern. I want him to speak emphatically. Obama speaks so slowly at times that it's almost a drawl, and to me it takes some of the certainty out of what he's saying.

However, while there may be some who fear that stern black man, I think there are many who grant extra credence to that black man. When you referred to that stern black man, I got quite a few mental images
but think Denzel Washington fits the bill best (visually, not personality-wise since I don't know Washington.) Maybe, what I mean is that Obama seems to me to try to soft-soap everything. I very much like that stern black man who sits straight, and think many many people do too. Granted, I would not want to try to cheat him, but that's a good thing.

Anyway, I'm going to vote for him so i want to add my two cents worth to help him get elected.

Lard - don't get mad but you seem a little grumpy after being away for a while. I'm used to your being funny and pretending to be a curmudgen. Anyway, about Ms Palin, I think she is a good choice for repubs because she sets up several opportunities to taunt dems.

After the disgusting behaviour of the dnc and the Obama campaign and msnbc, here come the champs of the "barefoot and pregnant" brigade to show they treat women better than liberal women's lib folk do.
I don't buy that myself, but it was masterful - they now have a chance to say it and use it in an argument. They also have one candidate who talks the evangelical talk, for appearance sake alone.

Also, she puts oomph into a ticket which is really rather
    tepid? anemic? lethargic? languid? diluted?

From all I've seen and heard of her, I do not like her one bit. I don't like her interest in putting her religious beliefs into law. I don't like her charge ahead, take no prisoner attitude. I don't like the trade-offs she seems ready to make. Of course, this is all based on the little real info I've been able to come across. Maybe, I'd love her if I knew her - but I suspect not

I just think she was the smartest choice McCain would have made. I hope she doesn't help him win.

  50. Team BHO and his surrogates are trying to slime Palin with false stories. These falsehoods have become known as The Sliming of Palin, and now these lies and distortions have been corrected:

Palin did not cut funding for special needs education in Alaska by 62 percent. She didn’t cut it at all. In fact, she tripled per-pupil funding over just three years.
She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin's first term.

She was never a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a group that wants Alaskans to vote on whether they wish to secede from the United States. She’s been registered as a Republican since May 1982.

Palin never endorsed or supported Pat Buchanan for president. She once wore a Buchanan button as a "courtesy" when he visited Wasilla, but shortly afterward she was appointed to co-chair of the campaign of Steve Forbes in the state.

Palin has not pushed for teaching creationism in Alaska's schools. She has said that students should be allowed to "debate both sides" of the evolution question, but she also said creationism "doesn't have to be part of the curriculum."

BHO remarks yesterday about pigs and lip stick. Now maybe he wasn't referring to Sarah Palin, but the crowd who was listening to his speech were very silent up until that phrase was said, then they erupted in laughter and applause. I think BHO knew what he was saying, and knew that catch line would get the reaction it did. That phrase has always been directed toward females some consider trailer trash.

Everytime the D's do this is just another reminder to all females of the similar treatment they showed towards HRC. Seems the Team BHO has issues with strong females assuming top positions.

Some one in here, I think it may have been Chloe, said Obama played the race card so often that people no longer care about being called racist. The fact is the GOPs NEVER care abut being called racist -- they even take it on a matter of PRIDE. As in, "Hey, I know it's not PC to say so, but most crime is committed by blacks." (CLARIFICATION -- These are NOT the views that I hold -- I am using this as an example of some of the milder racist comments I've heard from GOPs.)

I think anything that comes out of the mouth of Matthews can be viewed as suspect and being heavily tilted towards Team BHO. Matthews' unfounded accusations and half truths will only help to sink Team BHO deeper and deeper in the tar pit they have created with their simple minded, scurrilous attacks on Palin.

  56. "The fact is the GOPs NEVER care abut being called racist -- they even take it on a matter of PRIDE."

Can I get you a broader brush to paint every R? I think you might have missed a few over there in the corner.

Lets not forget who was Willie "The Murder/Rapist" Horton:

    * On June 6, 1986, convicted murderer Willie Horton was released from the Northeastern Correctional Center in Concord. Under state law, he had become eligible for an unguarded, 48-hour furlough. He never came back.

    * Horton showed up in Oxon Hill, Maryland, on April 3, 1987. Clifford Barnes, 28, heard footsteps in his house and thought his fiancée had returned early from a wedding party. Suddenly Willie Horton stepped out of the shadows with a gun. For the next seven hours, Horton punched, pistol-whipped, and kicked Barnes – and also cut him 22 times across his midsection.

    * When Barnes' fiancée Angela returned that evening, Horton gagged her and savagely raped her twice. Horton then stole Barnes' car, and was later chased by police until captured.

    * On October 20, 1987, Horton was sentenced in Maryland to two consecutive life terms plus 85 years. The sentencing judge refused to return Horton to Massachusetts, saying, "I'm not prepared to take the chance that Mr. Horton might again be furloughed or otherwise released. This man should never draw a breath of free air again."

    * Variations of this story were repeated on several occasions in Massachusetts. Confessed rapist John Zukoski, who had brutally beaten and murdered a 44 year-old woman in 1970, became eligible for furloughs and was eventually paroled in 1986. A few months later he was arrested and indicted yet again for beating and raping a woman.

    * The Massachusetts inmate furlough program actually began under Governor Francis Sargent in 1972. But in 1976 Governor Dukakis vetoed a bill to ban furloughs for first-degree murderers. It would, he said, "Cut the heart out of inmate rehabilitation."

    * The program, in essence, released killers on an "honor system" to see if they would stay out of trouble. On the average, convicts who had been sentenced to "life without parole" spent fewer than 19 years in prison. By March 1987, Dukakis had commuted the sentences of 28 first-degree murderers.

    * Of over 80 Massachusetts convicts listed as escaped and still at large, only four had actually "escaped." The rest simply walked away from furloughs, prerelease centers and other minimum-security programs. These convicts included murderers, rapists, armed robbers and drug dealers.

    * First-degree murderer Armand Therrien was transferred from a medium security prison to a minimum-security one, which made him eligible for a work-release program. He walked off and vanished in December 1987.

    * When citizens began to protest, Dukakis and his aides defended the program relentlessly. One commissioner stated that furloughs were a "management tool" to help the prisons. Unless a convict had hope of parole, he argued, "we would have a very dangerous population in an already dangerous system." But, critics wondered, if armed guards can't control dangerous killers inside locked cells, how are unarmed citizens supposed to deal with them?

    * It was through the efforts of a grassroots organization, Citizens Against Unsafe Society, that the issue was finally brought before the people. With mounting pressure from his own aides to sign a bill ending the program – for fear that it would hurt his presidential campaign – Dukakis signed the legislation in April of this year.

  57. Fry -- where is your sense of outrage for the scurrilous attacks on Obama and DEMs? A purposefully racist ad attempting to connect BO to the indicted mayor of Detroit? A completely FALSE ad about teaching sex to kindergardeners?

These are not just one liners and badly used analogies -- these are purposeful, intentional and RACIST ads to make a black candidate looks like a scary lawbreaker and pedophile sex offender.

  59. Governor Michael Dukakis believed that it was "rehabilitative" for prisoners to be allowed to roam the streets unsupervised in what was known as the Prison Furlough Program. This is how Willie Horton ended up in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

Just another fine example of how Liberals treat criminals, they reward them with special privileges, as they will always have a 'want some nice milk and cookie' excuse for granting such privileges. Criminal such as Horton should have never been released. Under Dukakis rehabilitation plan he was released unsupervised and allowed to commit other vicious crimes.

BHO has associated with a number of questionable associates throughout his life, from racist religious ministers, to unrepentant bomb throwing radicals, to scrupulous entrepreneurs. It can't all be a matter of just bad luck, just a coincidence, there is something about the makeup of these individuals BHO finds attractive.

You brought up Willie Horton, and the GOP. I just reminding everyone who Willie Horton was and how he was allowed to walk out of prison unsupervised. I know the truth is hard to take, but Willie Horton was allowed out of prison to rape that poor woman and pistol beat her boyfriend under the then Gov. of MA rehabilitation program. Here is the the 1988 GOP ad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC9j6Wfdq3o

Oh and Alice the first person to mention the Dukakis' get out of prison weekend pass was, Al Gore. It is not racist to put a face with a murder/rapist, who was allowed out to commit other heinous crimes.

Maybe HRC got tired of waiting for BHO to deliver on his promise? But seriously why would JM's campaign give HRC money when they just started to collect a substantial war chest to hold them through the next 50 some days of this election? That really doesn't make much sense...unless HRC has some sort of pay back in mind for Team BHO. Ohhhhhhhhhh wouldn't that be interesting.

I do think JM would consider her, at least extend the opportunity, to be part of his cabinet. Unlike BHO who never consider her, let alone extend her the opportunity to be his VP.

Palin never endorsed or supported Pat Buchanan for president. She once wore a Buchanan button as a "courtesy" when he visited Wasilla, but shortly afterward she was appointed to co-chair of the campaign of Steve Forbes in the state.

SHE WORE THE PIN AS A COURTESY? IF DAVID DUKE WAS IN TOWN AS A CANDIDATE DOES SHE WEAR THAT PIN AS A COURTESY TOO? DOES THAT MEAN SHE SUPPORTS THE MIDDLE CLASS AS A COURTESY TOO?

Palin has not pushed for teaching creationism in Alaska's schools. She has said that students should be allowed to "debate both sides" of the evolution question, but she also said creationism "doesn't have to be part of the curriculum." "

"Anybody see Obama last night with Bill O'Reilly?"

I hope they did. I posted this 3 times yesterday so all the BHO supporters could watch their guy in action..

BHO can not answer those questions truthfully so what he does is reinterpets the question to something he can supply an answer to, but he never answers the questions that were asked.

What I find very odd about his appearance last night was all these questions O'Riley asked of BHO, have been brought up before by O'Riley as questions he would like to ask BHO for the last several months when they were trying to get BHO to come on his show. So Team BHO knew what questions BHO was going to be asked. And you can tell he knew the questions because of the lack of "ahs" and "uhs' in his answers. BHO as we all have observed, doesn't do well with spontaneous questions he hasn't been prep for, and that is why there will be no Town Hall Meetings.

    http://www.adn.com/sarah-palin/story/515512.html

She ultimately didn't fire the librarian - she sent her a termination letter then relented and let her keep her job after the town supported the librarian. The fact is she wanted to censor the library, the librarian refused to go along, she sent her a termination letter, then let her keep the job in response to the citizens' pressure. And she didn't actually censor the library - at least there's no evidence of that. She just wanted to.

  101. Morning all.

The hypocrisy of Palin and the rest of the GOP's "small-town America" rhetoric is skewered in today's Thomas Frank (The Tilting Yard) column in the WSJ.

Best section comes as Frank describes all the shrinking, deserted and boarded up Main Streets that can be found by simply driving west from Kansas City.

"And eventually you will ask yourself, how did this happen? Did Hollywood do this? Was it those 'reporters and commentators' with their fancy college degrees who wrecked Main Street?

No. For decades now we have been electing people like Sarah Palin who claimed to love and respect the folksy conservatism of small towns, and yet who have unfailingly enacted laws to aid the small town's mortal enemies.

Without raising an antitrust finger they have permitted fantastic concentration in the various industries that buy the farmer's crops. They have undone the New Deal system of agricultural price supports in favor of schemes called 'Freedom To Farm' and loan deficiency payments -- each reform apparently designed to secure just one thing out of small town America: Cheap commodities for the big food processors....

But [John McCain] seems to think that small-town people can be easily played. Just choose a running mate who knows how to skin a moose and all will be forgiven. Drive them off the land, shutter their towns, toss their life chances into the grinder of big agriculture...and praise their values."

Awesome stuff. Sorry for the excerpt instead of the link, but Frank's column is in the walled-off part of wsj.com and available only to online subscribers.

Well, Fry, I was offended by what I saw as misogynistic crap from the BHO camp against Hillary in the primaries, but I didn't take the lipstick comment as being that - I rather saw it as a pretty cute turn of her own reference to lipstick on hockey moms. Frankly, I don't get it - Palin's a feisty woman, but she certainly can't be considered by any thinking person to be qualified to be POTUS - the only job that the VPOTUS is constitutionally required to be able to do. Running Wasilla for a while and Alaska for less than 2 years hardly qualifies anyone to be POTUS, and she doesn't seem to have the underlying experience outside those jobs to fill the bill.

Now maybe you have some additional insight into the Willie "The Murder/Rapist" Horton issue that you would like to share with us to correct the record. What did this organization say that was wrong?

Hey i know: Was Willie was just a good guy who just happened to get mixed-up with the wrong people, or did he come from a broken family, or maybe a single parent family, or did he have to sleep with numerous people in the same bed, or did he come from a financially challenge family, or did he not complete school, or did he have to do work at home. What was his excuse for turning into a murder and rapist? I am sure it had to be something really special. Problem with that is not everyone who comes from such conditions resorts to criminal activity to justify their very existence.

I always marvel at Liberal think. Always trying to find some excuse to blame on society for the perverted/heinous actions of the maggot scum, and then a way to reward them.

  116. The problem that Obama has with the lipstick comment is that he has no room to manuver because of the sexist campaign against HRC. It is coming back to bite him in the backside. The McCain campaign is playing hardball at the majorleague level. The Obama campaign is starting to look like the rookie phenom, who just discovered he can't hit a curve ball.
The world series isn't the place to find this out.

And here we are in September, sneaking bites from the repugs because we hate our current diet. Now we are bloated and guilty....and how is Obama going to raise money now? Ping, I don't think you can argue that making big-business even bigger, consolidation and efficiency of scale, promoting global free markets, etc. etc. are all staples of the GOP economic vision. I think Frank is just pointing out that the forces unleashed by those priorities have also had a lot to do with the decline of small-town America. You can of course make a strong case for the merits of all of the above, as the GOP is quick to do. But for the party to then turn around and brush itself into the backdrop of a Norman Rockwell painting every election is a bit much. As in hypocritical. That's all he's saying.

  124. Fry, you're making a leap that most liberals don't make. That's still true in some circles, but overall that's just crap held over from the bygone era of the hippies. Willie Horton was a bad dude who should never have been let out of prison on a furlough. The 70s saw a huge influx of prisoners thanks in large part to drug busts, and there were many different programs that sought to address the overcrowding of prisons and come up with fresh approaches to rehabilitation instead of just punishment. They weren't limited to nice young white kids who sent to prison for selling pot, but they also weren't all liberal or put in place by liberals and they weren't all as extreme as MA's. The biggest push back then was from the APA, that was establishing Correctional Psych Master's Degree programs in the universities. They obviously were looking at cause of crime as well as rehabilitation of prisoners - go figure. Some states, like MA, set up model programs based on the psych theories the APA was basing those programs on, but they were by and large pilot programs and they weren't all that numerous. I don't understand why you (I know you didn't bring it up initially) or anyone else would bring up Willie Horton other than as an example of the beginning of political attack ads as we recognize them today. Froma corrections perspective, substantively it has no relevance whatever to the contest between Obama and McCain. Oh, and btw, Gore (can we agree he's a liberal?) never mentioned Willie Horton when he was talking about Dukakis and Massachusetts' furlough program in '88. That fell to GHWB.

  132. Fry, I didn't support him as head of the ticket - in large part for those reasons. I vote issues when that is where the candidates differ. HRC and Obama didn't differ much on the issues - so I supported HRC based on her experience. Obama and McCain differ tremendously on the issues, so experience is not my touchstone in this election, although I have to say I'm glad Biden's around. You can fault him for many things, but he has experience. I don't think executive experience in the sense of running a state or a business is necessary for a president - and I doubt that anyone could point to a president who had to balance his own checkbook, much less the nation's. I think thye have staff that does that stuff. It might be helpful to understand the office, but I'm not convinced even of that. But neither do I want to see McCain bring us more Bushonomics and neoconservative military foreign policy. On those issues alone, I'll take Obama over McCain.

  141. Blondie, I believe the answer to your question about what's wrong with the dems in the house and senate is lack of gumption in the leaders. In short, they are scared to do anything that will look weak on security, and since they don't have the votes for an override of a Bush veto on most issues, they just go along and don't force the issues they should force. They are collectively a disgrace, and I hope neither Nan nor Harry will be in their leadership positions in the next congress.

NYC police are very aware that the terrorist thread is very real and yet most dems dismiss this threat as fear mongering. 148. Pogo,

"Oh, and btw, Gore (can we agree he's a liberal?) never mentioned Willie Horton when he was talking about Dukakis and Massachusetts' furlough program in '88."

So what is worse? The liberal program that allowed Horton out on furlough or the crimes Horton committed while on his 48 furlough? I say the program, because without the program being in existence Horton would not have been allowed out on a 48 hour furlough.

As far a Gore, as I originally stated Gore was the first to mention Dukakis furlough program. The fact that GHWB had a campaign ad showing who this thug was is fair game. The fact that he is Black, is just that, Horton was Black and in 1987 he committed several violent criminal acts while out on a 48 hour furlough. I know Liberals find this disturbing, but It is not racist to show mug shots, and if you watch local TV much, you will see a similar thing occurring nightly, but it isn't racist on part of the TV station, it is what it is.

Here in Charlotte the leaders of the Black community wish this wasn't the case, they have tried numerous ways working within the community, civic leaders, the Mayors office, with the police, to correct the problem, but crime in the Black community is staggering. It is not racist, it is a fact of life. And to further illustrate my point you need only look to the % how many Blacks will not be allowed to vote because of their felonious criminal background.

There are more White criminals to be sure, but as a % of race there are more Black criminals. There are numerous proven ways to correct this failing situation, but this would cause the ACLU to have multiple conniptions.

He wants to be President to some of the people, not all the people. Those people that so many demean, by calling them 'stupid' need a president too. And their vote is just as important as yours. Posted by: FryDaddy | September 10, 2008 10:08 AM

Well although your question is overly loaded with your personal disdain of him, I think the intent of asking re: qualifications is fair. And here is my answer ...
I don't care if he's had NO experience... We have suffered under the worst President in the history of our country, a man who should be jailed for life for all the crap he's done to civil rights, the economy, lying to get us into a war because he's an oilman and got a hard-on thinking about oil profits and not minding that he sends young men and women off to DIE for his dirty little war, his attacks on Gays and Lesbians, his fundamentalist approach to AIDS education and denial of federal funding for agencies that provide information on pregnancy termination, his attempts to be a dictator telling the Congress what to do, ignoring repeated warning signs that the Taliban and Al Qaeda were actually in Afghanistan and only lately has decided something needs to be done there... The only decent thing that as*h*le has done was award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Ms. Doris Day.

Thus having said all of this, when you've reached TRULY rock bottom, there really is only one way left to go... and that's up (sadly McInsane and the Powerpuff Girl are at the same level as Dubya. I've said it before and I will say it again, the repugs have destroyed our economy, our health care, our housing market, financial markets, oil pricing and the like. There isn't a "get rich quick" scheme they don't like as long as their friends and allies profit from it. They "love" the environment they say, but seem to be following the example of senile Reagan's Dept of Interior chief James Watt who reportedly said "James Watt told the U.S. Congress that protecting natural resources was unimportant in light of the imminent return of Jesus Christ.". He denies it, but many people claim that he indeed said those words.

Therefore... given the operational "excellence" of this right wing nightmare, I will gladly vote for Barack Obama. If not him or not Hillary, hell I'd still throw a vote in for a Nutella Jar. That's how strongly I feel about those people.

Ohio and Virginia both like to claim they are the "mother of presidents" it looks like both states will play a role in deciding the next one.

  178. Fry, I know your response re: Horton is not aimed at me but is meant just to smear liberals generally since I didn't defend the program in general or its application to Horton. Happy I could be a catalyst, but like I said, it's not substantively applicable to the election we're in.

Jason, reject that comment if you will, but with 3 of the 4 candidates uttering lipstick remarks, being offended by one of them that was patently not the sexist comment it is being portrayed as made against a candidate who started the whole frickin shebang by trying to be funny and tough is IMHO ridiculous. If that is what a voter bases a decision to vote for one or the other candidates on, that is stupid.

chloe, he was commenting on McCain's policies as a gussied up extension of Bush's. He could have used more leaderlike language and set himself apart from the other candidate I suppose, but uttering colloquialisms and idioms in the context of a political speech is hardly unleaderlike. (But don't get me wrong - I've not become a big BHO fan and am not trying to be his apologist - i just think this is a ridiculous issue). And yes, a stupid person's vote counts as much as a smart one's, after all, Dumya won WV twice and we have lots of stupid people here, but that doesn't make the stupid reason for the vote any smarter.

Fry, indeed it is amazing - the concept of a what, a 26 mile circular underground accelerator is mind boggling - nevermind the supercooling technology necessary just to keep the thing operating. And the "cameras" can take more than a million pictures per second. JHC!!.

"Common sense and its snarky cousin, conventional wisdom, hold that presidential elections are won or lost at the top of the ticket."

"And here's the absolute proof Palin is the straw that stirs the drink: Democrats are attacking her more than McCain......Days after he congratulated her and called her "an admirable person" who "will add a compelling new voice to this campaign," Barack Obama Tuesday called Palin a liar. You know she's hit a nerve when the opposing party's presidential nominee goes after the other party's VP nominee in such raw terms."

This country has never been a "true Democracy". You would have to scrap the constitution.

A Republic is representative government ruled by law (the Constitution). A democracy is direct government ruled by the majority. A Republic recognizes the inalienable rights of individuals while democracies are only concerned with majority group wants or needs.

The R's are going to use any tactics to win, just now Willie Horton is being resurrected, it does not matter how it started-it's out there now.Why simple it works-on many levels. The r's will use any and all tools needed,Willie H, Monica L. It doesn't matter if it's relates, redundant, or not, It's all about emotional connections.
The D's should take their thumbs of of their collective mouths-grow some b's and grow up. Don't t use the Kerry,Gore,Dashel,Kennedy models-use the Clinton model.Paul Begala,Carvelle,G.S,,Fight back with emmotional connections. H.C. was right not to go after Gov.P.

The R's are talking about change-how can you talk about change when you have V.P. Chenney (list all of his connection-and to whom)if he's not around it's is real change,a few dozen people that he controlls just like he controlled 43, won't be around to make choices, that will us,our children, and our grandchildren.Emotional connections.

The R's changed-the hearts and minds of our military leaders, look at Gen. Powell,he was changed after they set him up to lie and get us into an unjust war in Iraq. The D's will change back to honesty, honor,in dealing with our military and the American people.

    There's a lot to use, J. Abr. J libby etc,etc,
No personal attacks by O of B. period, let someone else do this.

Charlie Blacks was mentioned, and other bad guys-these are the R's stealth force, with the tenacity and disapline/ needed.
Where are the D's once again, Kerry,Kennedy,Dacshell. They go out and give it you intellectually, and the far left understands them perfectly, but there is no emotional connection, like when the big dawg(like Jack say's) does it. We need our own stealth fighters and a party that sticks to talking points, simple ones.People like Harold F.Jr. R Emmanuel etc.get people like them to organize like the R's,too late?

Sorry but my guy will never run again(Prof Hagelin) and I'm going to join the D's I"m coming in swinging, but it has to be the right guy, still in the middle and looking, might skip this time?.

  210. Jamie, the problem with that is they aren't sure that Obama isn't fooling them either. Who in their right mind would think that you can have a "taxcut" for 95% of Americans, have everyone receive health care, reduce the deficit, fix the housing crisis and so forth

Posted by: Bowmanc Author Profile Page | September 10, 2008 12:25 PM

  211. The problem with any politician is that they actually believe they are profoundly smarter than the rest of us. And they often make daft decisions because of it. It seems to me that Obama was sure that the Hillary supporters would naturally gravitate to him because there was/is no place else to go. He felt that he could dismiss Hillary as a possible running mate and people would understand. But for the Hillary supporters they don't understand... well at least I don't. Obama should have shown a bit of humbleness and offered her the VP slot. But he couldn't do it... and thus we are in this mess where Dems should win in a cake walk and are struggling to keep on message and keep ahead in the polls. Nothing against Biden and I do respect Obama's choice to choose whom he most wants as a running mate, but it just put his campaign into a THUD mode. All the worse for us. I cannot contemplate another 4 years of the last 8....

Bowman, Actually he could do by simply refocusing the tax burden. Now whether than money would actually go to those projects is another matter. Given our current deficit and debt, it is going to be very difficult

Of course it is even more insane to believe that McCain could continue the Bush tax cuts on the top 1% of income earners and not have it continue to cripple the middle class.

If we are going to continue borrowing money, then we need to have that money go as investment in the middle class and the infrastructure that supports them, so that there is some hope of paying off that debt in the future. Just as the upper incomes were hit with 90% taxes following WWII so that investment could be made into the GI Bill, so we now need to stop the slide of the middle class into poverty.

There are roads to be built, bridges to refurbish, green technologies to develop, schools to upgrade, colleges to support ... all of the things that have been pushed aside and ignored for decades in favor of more and more for fewer and fewer people.

  225. Katherine,

You actually replied to one of my post, I am honored. How I miss our bantering.

You are correct no one came out and called her a Dike, or a number of other derogatory names, I mean not even the DNC would stoop so low. Well that is questionable.

But in similar fashion to BHO's coded phrase "pig and lipstick", the point is to get the message across without saying the actual words. Lipstick on a pig was a direct assult on Sarah Palin to refer to her as trailer trash.

This is similar John "PB" Edwards, intention to make sure everyone listening to the debate be made aware that Cheney's daughter, Mary, is a lesbian. It was a kind of in your face statement for Bush-Cheney supporters or anyone considering voting for them. Pssss...Did you know Cheney's daughter is a lesbian? Do you know what lesbians do?

John "POS" Edwards. Just another example of a leading D who has pushed a female under the bus. OK so it was his wife. A private matter.

I understand exactly how you feel about it.

But if you actually understood what I am 'trying' to say (and apparently I'm not doing a vey good job of it) is that in order to win this election. the Dems are going to have to 'claim' to love and respect the folksy conservatism of small towns too. But instead, all I'm seeing are demeaning jokes and statements about 'bubbas' and how stupid the people in small towns all are.

Is that the best way to win an election? Is that the new way to win friends and influence people?

Do so many of you really think people who don't agree with you as just stupid and dismiss them as that.

so much piffle. The question was how can you treat your own daughter like a third class citizen? How can you treat any American that way...yet Republicans always have some excuse most of them with some religious base. Did you forget there is separation of church and state?

And Cheney said..I bow to the superior intellect of George W Bush.

jamie, LOL. This is all such bull$hit. since there is no discussion to speak of of anything of substance coming out of either campaign, there is no discussion of Obama's and McCain's economic plans that would increase the debt by $3.5 and $5 T, respectively. No discussion of soldiers staying, coming home, going elsewhere to fight a group of enemies that is virtually endless in number. No discussion of how either plans to deal with unfunded Medicare and social security program costs in excess of $50T. No, the discussionis about whether Palin is qualified to be POTUS - she isn't - and whether lipstick/pig/fish/newspaper comments are sexist and ageist - they aren't - or make Obama appear unpresidential - they may or may not depending on your political sensibilities.

And Fry, I do not see the misogynistic crap I saw in the primaries. It was clera Obama was not referring to Palin as the pig, and she is inexperienced, but some things indeed haven't changed. They just aren't working for Obama right now.

Make these the D's talking points for everyone that opens up their mouth, if talking points change due to new info out there another commercial to rebut.Just an idea but they better do something fast no?

  232. Clemmeio; 9:28 am ........... "his sit down with Bill", My own personal hope is that Bill says," you screwed her over, now pay the price F*&^head..................................

How very, very sad that in this day and age we can not have political discussion without being tarred as racists. I think it will never come to be, because reverse racists are like spoiled children, who have a tantrum every time you say no. There are some very intelligent, very thoughtfull postings here from people like Bear and don't know the rest. But posters like Alicia and Karolenna should just shut up and go away, they just throw BS into the conversation and just belittle the things that serious posters like Chloe, Jamie, Viv, Bethy, ubns and other women have to say.......IMHO...

  234. OBAMA = BETRAYAL
Obama supporters are foolish to think that he will never betray them.
Obama was a close friend of Pastor Wright for TWENTY YEARS.
Obama threw Wright under the bus for personal ambition.
McCain would not betray his country even after 5 years of torture.
You can put lipstick on a traitor, but he's still a traitor.
