Finally, Barack Obama is playing old politics. Trying to be above it all wasn't working, never did and never will.
Against a barrage of old-politics attacks, Obama is giving up the high ground and attacking Republican foe John McCain for being old. So much for trying to change how campaigns work.
Obama is just another politician, exploiting his opponent's weakness with cheesy televsion advertisements -- and that's the only way he can make it to the White House.

Comments
I don't agree that Obama has taken the high road before.
He pretended to as he, throughout the long campaign, has allowed others to savage his opponents with slurs and reprehensible charges.
The new politics was always a fraud.
Unfortunately, we are stuck with him.

Obama was on the High Road??? Oh, does this refer to the same High obtained from certan substance,
He was just much "Slicker" in his delivery - and to some degree with HRC he did not need to take the stabs as the MSM did it for him.
Again and again the only ads from Sen Obama are negative about McCain. This continues to be a disappointment

My father, uncle, and two stepbrothers graduated from the U.S> Military Academy at West Point, where I was born, in the cadet hospital. Although I was brought up by a political grandfather in Washington, D.C., I was well immerseed in the West Point ethos, Duty Honor Country, as was David Eisenhower, the president's grandson whom I met years later. We exchanged notes on how difficult it was to free oneself from that world: " They never let go," I said, "It's like a family."
"No, " he said, "It's like a religion." Although neither of us attended the Point, each was born in the cadet hospital; each went to Exeter and grew up listening to West Pointers gossip about each other as well as vent their political views, usually on the far right. At the time of the Second War, many of them thought they were fighting the wrong side. "We should be helping Hitler destroy Communism......Later we could take care of Hitler."

I always knew that about Obama; one reason why I was frustrated with his campaign against Hillary Clinton. He chose to say he was not from the "old politics" cloth and would be different. But, I knew he would have to politic the same way as everyone. People don't care about the high moral ground. I believe they change their minds according to the last impressionable soundbite and if it is negative for you, that's what counts in their book. Voters are fickle. If you can't beat them, join them --- that's the current theme. Wake me up when it is over!

In general, they disliked politicians, Franklin Roosevelt most of all. There was also a degree of low-key anti-semitism while pre-world war II Blacks were Ellisonian Invisibles. Even so, in that great war, Duty, Honor, served the country surprisingly well..Unfortunately, some served themselves well when Trumanmilitarized the economy, providing all sorts of lucrative civilian employment for high-ranking officers. Yet it was Eisenhower himself who warned us in 1961 of the dangers of the "military-industrial-complex." Unfortunately, no one seemed eager to control military spendiing, particfularly after the Korean War, which we notoriously failed to win even though the cry "The Russians are coming!" was daily heard throughout the land. Propaganda necessary for Truman's military buildup was never questioned...particularly when demagogues like Senator McCarthy were destroying careers with reckless accusation that anyone able to read the New York Times without moving his lips was Communist.

PP,
Copper River salmon; It's good but ridiculously expensive especially if you have it served in a restaurant.
I have a good buddy from BC that comes down to Seattle once a month with fresh (normally) but mostly smoked salmon to vend out of his trunk to the locals. It's as good as CRS and at my price we can afford several sides of either each trip. I think he seines mostly on a tributary of the Fraser River watershed. (same as CR) It is good!

What I grew up learing to call "Crappies" in Missouri are called "Speckled Perch" down here in Florida. Or "Specks" for short. (Just like "bluegill" up there is "bream" down here)
Same damn fish. Same great taste.
Guys down here spend thousands of dollars on bass boats to go chase fish that don't taste near as good. Bass tastes like hell. I would catch a bass from my slow-moving Lardass pontoon and throw it back. But give me a 20-ounce Speck in the net, and my day is complete. Time to go home.
No Crappies that big in Missouri...but they still taste as good.

It’s America’s newest disease
You know it by its initials - PDS. Palin Derangement Syndrome.
You can watch the victims of PDS on TV every night, frothing at the mouth in front of Obama banners, repeating scurrilous lies lifted from left-wing blogs or just making up new whoppers as they go along. It’s an epidemic - Palin Derangement Syndrome swept through MSNBC studios this week and claimed two anchors, who are survived by dozens of viewers.

As I was trying to recruit Mexicanos into the neighborhood association several years ago. Our professionals were saying "ooooooh how are we going to handle the language barrier."
I told them it depends. If a few show up then we have translators to help them understand what is going on. But if I'm successful, then we do the meeting in Spanish and put the translator at your table.
It wasn't that long after that my wife and I were run out of town so to speak. Some of the Pros helped run us out.

Pomoxis Nigromaculata is a great working class fish. I think the turbid water cousin is Auratus. Not sure, I only met the fellow once, in a GA reservoir.
Lepomis Gibbosis is the bluecollar Bluegill - almost as hearty, and family-oriented as Mr. & Mrs. Crappie.

Go for it, if you want to drive down the vote, that is why the Reps don't mind negative. Lower turn out favors them.
Add to it his negative campaigning hasn't gotten him anywhere so far, and around here negative ads are all I've seen.
Maybe he needs to quit letting the Repubs define him and start defining himself.

I don't know where I heard this but it's been said that American's like negative campaigning as long as it's fair and truthful. Perhaps by stating facts in an ad, one is still practicing new politics...

Oh please... this post made me gag, and I don't do that easily!
These lyrics are from a song by Peter Paul and Mary and it was during the USA support of the Junta in El Salvador. I find the words relevant in America's latest dirty little war.
"And kill the people to set them free
Who put this price on their liberty?
Don't you think it's time to leave ?"
Oh yeah, things have sure gotten better since America invaded Iraq. Here's one fine example. Thank you and God bless you USA.
"Since invasion, gays in Iraq lead lives of constant fear - Homosexuals have been increasingly targeted by militias and police, human rights groups say. Officials deny the claim."

" I just wondered if any of the mouth almightys here, had done anything in the way of public service as opposed to "community organizing", or if all they're good for is to call down the working stiff who doesn't agree with them."
Rita, with all due respect, community organizing is a public service. Work to educate and empower communities is an important step to improving their lot in life and create a better future for themselves and their families. Surely you would not look down at people who work tirelessly to help communities to help themselves??

I Googled "Florida politics bitch" just to see what came up, and right there on page one was this: "Katherine Harris is a sick, twisted bitch..."
I post this tidbit to illustrate just what Obama and all the dems are up against in 2008. Harris and all the bullshit in 2000 in FL, and Ken Blackwell's crooked orchestration of early poll closings and rigged voting machines in 2004 serve as reminders that the evil repugg machine will be on overdrive these next few weeks with lies and distortions in their quest for a Bush third term, John McCain, surrogate.
S. Palin was on TV again extolling her virtues regarding being ready to be President. She's winning approval, I hear.
She's saying Obama is regretting not picking HRC as veep.
She's all giddy as she traipses all over pitching McCain's views . She's ridiculous. We cannot allow this nonsense, and we must elect Obama.

Air America hosts are telling us we DO NOT have to use other than paper ballots.
My precinct uses paper ballots and we may watch our vote register as it is read by the scanner.
I guess we have a right to refuse to vote on an electronic machine, when that is the option we are given, and we may demand paper ballots, or vote early, absentee balloting.

Dex -- "I guess we have a right to refuse to vote on an electronic machine, when that is the option we are given, and we may demand paper ballots, or vote early, absentee balloting."
Speaking of early voting and absentee balloting...there is some thought that the election may be decided as early as October 15th given the number of early votes (including absentees) that will be cast by that date.

Anyway, I just wanted to comment on "Goodfellas", and "Heat", both superb movies, I'm hoping "Righteous Kill" will be as good. And btw, Sheila's right, kitty litter is great for traction in the winter.

Sorry about the long post,, but there's really no way to cut it any further...
At least 28 of the 84 legislative chambers with elections this year can be called battlegrounds with either party having a chance to emerge with a majority. The National Conference of State Legislatures has listed the top 10 battleground states in alphabetical order:
Delaware - A switch of just two seats in the House would give Democrats the majority, and they hope having Delaware Senator Joe Biden running for vice president will lead to unprecedented enthusiasm among First State Democrats.
Indiana - Democrats have a two-seat advantage over the Republicans in the House. The chamber has switched party control 15 times in the past 80 years.
Montana - The most competitive legislature in the country. Republicans currently control the House by just one seat. In the Senate, Democrats hold a two-seat advantage.
New York - The New York Senate is up for grabs. Republicans have a one-seat advantage, but Democrats can seize the majority for the first time since 1966 by picking up two Senate seats.
Nevada - Republicans enter the election with a razor thin 11-10 edge in the Senate.
Ohio - Term limits hit Republicans disproportionately hard in the Ohio House offering Democrats their best shot at winning back control since they lost it in 1994.
Oklahoma - The Oklahoma Senate is tied, with an equal number of Republicans and Democrats.
Pennsylvania - On paper, Democrats have a one-seat lead over the Republicans in the House, although the speaker is from the GOP. Republicans would like to gain back the majority after losing it in 2006.
Tennessee - The Senate has equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats, but Republicans control the body through a coalition majority and would like to take outright control by picking up a seat or two.
Wisconsin - Democrats need to win back just three seats to get control of the Assembly for the first time since 1994. Republicans need only two Senate pick-ups to win back control.
"Other states to watch are Arizona, Maine, Michigan, North Dakota, Oregon and South Dakota," said Storey.

Hey B,
I guess I just don't get it. This is such an important election. Yeah I know they all are, but BushCo has the country so twisted and to stand on the sidelines if your vote could make a difference, just wears me out. Pick one that counts and go for it.
Oh, we won a bit. . for a change. and I got to have a few brews since I had my designated driver with me.. lol

Ok the ad was clever but I think Barack Obama needs to get even more down and dirty. The ad was "cutsie" but as far as I could see, it didn't really go for the jugular. We all KNOW how the Repugs play dirty in these elections. Our good "liberal dems" have to throw their tolerance quotient out the window and fight as down and dirty as the Repugs do.

Forgive me for being underwhelmed at the prospect of a Democratic presidency with these goons at the helm.

Posted by: warren

No- those are the necessary options to achieve the desired result, which I'm assuming for most concerned is an end to a catastrophic war for all parties involved, save the ones running it. Grand High Clinton himself helped shut down government for a week over a budget, the Democratic majority can't muster the same effort to end a war?
Just elect Obama and everything will be alright, huh?

Bush is a lame duck, so to speak, why worry about his political benefit? He wouldn't be around to exploit it anyway, and Cheney isn't running. That seems like a pretty lame excuse for allowing the bloodshed to continue... to avoid "Bush's political benefit". Is that the price of human lives?
Posted by: champ | September 13, 2008 4:07 AM
Ah, so they caved under pressure. Good to know they will be running the show with such a history. You can only hope that it starts to get better, but that's just blind faith, like in that of Jesus himself. It's a religion- a cult, even; just without the God. Plenty of dogma to compensate, though.
Posted by: champ | September 13, 2008 4:11 AM
The point is that there was not enough support to override Bush's veto.
And giving Bush - and the GOP - the political high ground would make it even harder to get a Democrat in the White House.
Plus - the type of diplomacy that needs to be done to end this war and move forward is impossible with Bush as President. He is far worse than a lame duck in many ways. He is part of the problem because his credibility is shot.
Posted by: warren
| September 13, 2008 4:13 AM
You're getting close, warren.
The continued War in Iraq is in Obama's best interest, as it helps him win the Presidency. If there were no war, Obama wouln't have a snowball's chance in heel of being the nominee, as the main issue would be the economy, and God knows there are more competent and prominent individuals to steward towards that end. So you basically have The Democratic elite sacrificing human lives so that they may garner power. Pretty fucking sick, but nothing new in the grand scope of history. Just don't call it 'change'.
Posted by: champ | September 13, 2008 4:21 AM
Iraq is one of two wars we are fighting. And there is rising tension with Iran and Russia.
McCain's belligerence is a perfect recipe for WWIII.
And just watch what will happen to the economy then.
CNN and anyone else who thinks the economy - as opposed to Foreign Policy - is issue #1 is wrong.
The President has far more control over Foreign Affairs than they do over the economy.

I am not saying he has not gone negative. But there were several times in the primary - when observers, i.e., pundits, lawmakers and voters - cried out:
"When will Obama hit back"
"Is he tough enough"
"He has to go negative"
Those points were never raised with others.
He's not perfect - but he is a step in the right direction.

the problem Champ with shutting down the government is that everyone suffers and then there is definitely a voter backlash. We have to remember that with only a 1 seat difference between the Dems being a majority in the Senate and the Repugs being a minority, is the fact that Repugs can filibuster almost any proposal to death or even put "holds" on proposed legislation. I am not sure how it works in the House. My Mom is pissed at the Dems too, but most people don't understand that being the majority party does not equate to enormous power when the division is so close. Also in the House, you have to remember that a lot of Conservative Democrats were recruited in regions that were/are traditionally Republican. In order to hold their own Congressional seats, they have had to buck with the majority leadership. And for the Dem's majority, they've had to incorporate their positions into their legislative game plan because otherwise many would likely lose their seats creating a situation where the Repugs again would rule the roost.

We ar too deep into all the dirty little aspects of international intrigue and intimidiation that we have to see it thru - unless, of course, something like an asteroid coming at us RIGHT NOW shows up. It's the old chinese finger puzzle trick. We can't get out now and will only make a move when they do. Basically, I can't stand the thought of another repub government in the white house, no matter what.
Barak Obama better figure out how to win this thing - if he can't, he can't do the job of president. Being pres is a lot harder than winning this election - if he can't do the latter, there's no way he can do the former. In that case, he will and should be finished in politics, after the carnage he has left behind him. He's nothing new to me and a whole lot of others. The high road? He's only seen pictures of it - forget the hyperbole = Go out and win this thing!
