John McCain must be yearning for the good ole days -- a month ago -- when there was war in Europe. Barack Obama has to be thrilled that Wall Street is breaking up.
In such a tight presidential race, events are driving polls more than the candidates. McCain enjoyed an end-of-summer surge that traces back to the Russian invasion of Georgia, augmenting it with a strong convention and head-turning vice presidential pick.
That all stopped in its tracks when the economy came roaring back to stage, infusing Obama with a polling boost.
For those looking to predict the outcome of this election, you will have to figure out what the news will be that week. And whether the Republican White House can influence events to help McCain.

Right now Mr Obama is talking when he should be listening. We don't need a shadow cabinet, a shadow congress, nor a shadow president right now.
Both candidates need to work within the currently established governmental channels during the next week in an effort to prop things up.
After that, there will still be time for electioneering.
Unfortunately, though, Mr Obama has consistently put his campaign's self-interest above more important interests.

Obama Gains in Polls as Financial Crisis Shifts Focus (Update1)

Gretchen Morgenson is assistant business and financial editor and a columnist at the New York Times. She has covered the world financial markets for the Times since May 1998 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for her "trenchant and incisive" coverage of Wall Street.
Ms. Morgenson added that a single institutional solution to the problem — like the Resolution Trust Corporation that was created to buy assets of failed savings and loans in the late 1980s and early 1990s — is simply not available this time.
“Any solution to this problem really must be done one by one, one mortgage at a time,” Ms. Morgenson predicted, noting that multiple parties — homeowners, investors who own mortgage-based securities, loan servicing companies and law firms that represent the servicing companies — all have a stake in the outcome.
“There’s a cast of characters and their interests are not necessarily aligned,” she said. “It is a really big mess.”

"Implement a national usury law. I would make it 12-percent across the board." [flatus 11:10 am]
interesting stuff about usury from wiki: Usury (in the original sense of any interest) was at times denounced by a number of religious leaders and philosophers in the ancient world, including Plato, Aristotle, Cato, Cicero, Seneca[9], Plutarch,[citation needed] Aquinas[10], Muhammad[11], Moses,[citation needed] Philo[citation needed] and Gautama Buddha.[citation needed]
For example, Cato in his De Re Rustica said:
"And what do you think of usury?" - "What do you think of murder?"
wonder where our right wing religious nuts stand on usury. those who believe the bible infalliable might have some trouble re prohibition therein.

Patd,
One of the reason that Jews became bankers in Europe was that Judaism allowed for a reasonable amount of interest to be charged for loans while Christianity did not.
It also had the added advantage that if some Christian ruler got too deeply in debt, they could simply hold a pogrom and kill off their banker.

The press would have a field day if he just remained quiet on the sidelines. They would say he was a total wimp. Sorry, but in my humble opinion, you are wrong here.
As for putting his campaign self-interest above other interests, well we could certainly see it in that way, but... there isn't a politician who doesn't do that, and if we want to go all Darwin here, to not do so will extinct the candidate. John McCain was supposed to be a maverick who was against egregious attacks on political opponents and look what he is doing now. Attack! Attack! Attack! He choose a VP candidate that is as right wing as Bush as a way to solidify support from the reactionary right. Sorry, but if Obama didn't respond and also take initiative and speak out, he would lose support.

MD, it's a sad social commentary but not unexpected. I was particularly shocked by the comment in Ohio when a man said "We don't like Black people"... At least he was honest, but still ...
There is some legitimacy for the existence of the mistrust between the races, because of past and current histories. Most of it is simple bigotry created by an unwillingness to welcome people of different racial and cultural backgrounds to a neighbourhood or into a circle of friends. If we cannot join together and learn from each other, the racism won't go away.
What I am trying to say, perhaps not too artfully, is that both sides are at fault for the mistrust, fear and hatred. And it should stop.

MD
From your article
"And many whites who see blacks in a negative light are still willing or even eager to vote for Obama."
and this is without him even doing any real effort to reach out to those with negative view.
"Race is not the biggest factor driving Democrats and independents away from Obama. Doubts about his competency loom even larger, the poll indicates. More than a quarter of all Democrats expressed doubt that Obama can bring about the change they want, and they are likely to vote against him because of that."
As iI said yesterday, other black politicians have proved they can draw in these votes, what you need to be asking yourself is 'why can't Obama". Crying rasism is counter productive and just pisses off potential votes.

Lard, real leaders really don't care who gets credit for hard work and good ideas. And, effective technocrats are unstinting in touting the brilliance of their leaders.
I tend to think adulation spoils the breed--dedicated career public servants often do so just for the satisfaction of making a difference--we shouldn't mess with that.
One of the things many of us admired about Brasil in the 70s was their dependence on technocrats as being the real enablers of good government which in turn was given some focus by elected leaders.

Some facts to back up the BS.
Emanuel Cleaver won the 5th district race with 64% of the vote. That was almost twice the vote of all the other candidates combined. The make up of the 5th district is 69% white, 25% black. As the district is home to some of the most impoverished black communities in the area the registered vote rate could even fall under 20%.
All Obama has to do is be as good as Emanuel Cleaver. and he would win Missouri by 10 points. Right now he is losing by 10.

Rita,
Often the counts for offices don't match. In fact that is the reality more often than not. Some people vote for Prez and leave everything else blank. Unfortunately, failing to cast a vote can invalidate a ballot in some states just as voting for too many people in the same category would.
Check this website for the NY state board of elections to see if the rules are there. If not you can contact them and ask.

pstd, they probably do and I'm sure there are many who would tell you they're racists. And I would bet many blacks of all affiliations (party) not voting for McCain because he's white and that reason alone. I don't have a guess on any numbers.
imo. . I think it's best to drop the subject of racism here since it's a no-win proposition. As I've alluded to before, if it's mentioned it's called race baiting, playing the victim card or even better, an excuse. Why worry about it; he won the primary and I think he'll win the GE despite my misgivings. I'm ready to move on and leave the subject for the academics afterwards. If he doesn't win there will be someone to stand on his shoulders as he has said he's standing on the shoulders of others before him.
Final note though: I don't anyone including Obama has a plan to end racism. Don't you think that's a foolish notion. Admirable but improbable. Again imo.

So, the $85 billion loan to A.I.G. was really a bailout of the company’s counterparties or trading partners.
Now, inquiring minds want to know, whom did we rescue? Which large, wealthy financial institutions — counterparties to A.I.G.’s derivatives contracts — benefited from the taxpayers’ $85 billion loan? Were their representatives involved in the talks that resulted in the last-minute loan?
And did Lehman Brothers not get bailed out because those favored institutions were not on the hook if it failed?
We’ll probably never know the answers to these troubling questions. But by keeping taxpayers in the dark, regulators continue to earn our mistrust. As long as we are not told whom we have bailed out, we will be justified in suspecting that a favored few are making gains on our dimes.
A.I.G.’s financial statements provided a clue to the identities of some of its credit default swap counterparties. The company said that almost three-quarters of the $441 billion it had written on soured mortgage securities was bought by European banks. The banks bought the insurance to reduce the amounts of capital they were required by regulators to set aside to cover future losses.
Enjoy the absurdity: Billions in unregulated derivatives that were about to take down the insurance company that sold them were bought by banks to get around their regulatory capital requirements intended to rein in risk.

Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson Jr. has called the fund the “troubled asset relief program.” I’ll just call it TARP for short (you know, the kind of thing they spread over muddy fields so you don’t soil your Guccis).
And depending on how TARP is operated, and how the assets are valued before taxpayers are forced to buy them, it could bloat our final bill for this mess while benefiting the very institutions that got us into it.
Yes, we need a smart plan and a concerted effort to get the frozen credit markets up and running. But we also have to be certain that the types of conflicts of interest that riddle Wall Street aren’t visited upon TARP.
Consider: A bank wants to sell the TARPistas (also known as TAXPAYERS) a pile of stinky mortgage securities that it currently values at 60 cents on the dollar. Let’s assume that the most recent actual trade between market participants for similar assets was struck at 30 cents on the dollar.
So what’s a fair price that we TARPistas should pay for the assets? ..from NYTIMES link

Sturg,
I flunked an Anthropoplogy test years ago when I countered the prof with the idea that there are some who take it on faith as many do in other groups that their origins are in conflict with the scientific record. He permitted me to retest on the question of the origins of early North Americans and asked that I respond to it according to the conclusions of a particular author on our syllabus.

I was food shopping yesterday and at the checkout the young woman at the register had skin tone that was a light cafe au lait. The older lady behind me had darker, cocoa tones in her skin. The lady behind me came right out and asked the clerk, "Are you black?" The young woman was a little startled, but she managed to respond, "Umm, no."
The older lady persisted, "You're not black?! What are you?" The young woman said, "I'm Puerto Rican." The older lady said, "Hmmph. Well you look like you could be black." The young woman was flummoxed. I felt awkward and wondered why that lady was asking those questions, or was I reading too much into it? .

Sturge -- Why would Todd Palin feel any different than Cindy McCain following her husband around? Or Jill Biden or Michele Obama?
Should he feel any different than just supporting his spouse's campaign? Did Bill Clinton feel goofy standing behind Hillary?
When I ran for office my husband was very happy to stand behind me -- as long as he didn't have to talk, he was okay with it.

Sturgeone,
Pogo will concur when I declare unequivocally that Richard Petty is not only King, but he's God on 4 wheels. The guy in one of the most unassuming celebrities on the planet.
When I sent away for his autograph on a couple of pictures, I wrote a letter and mentioned that he can brag in the garage that he has some Haitian fans from New England...he actually sent a note with the autographs saying my letter was too funny...
As for the discussion of racism...all I care is that if you're going to burn a cross on my lawn, do it without the hood. Overt racists are much easier to deal with that the two facers. It seems that the more money people have, the more likely they are to two face it, since they fear costing themselves financially if their unsavory "habit" is discovered.

Todd Palin walks around with that smirk because he knows there are a lot of men in the audience and some women, that want to have sex with his wife and they can't get her...
Plus, she includes him on some official emails so he's getting to run stuff too. Throw in the fact that many find him good looking and it's not hard to have a shit eating grin plastered on your face either.

Couple seem to fall in two categories
ones that do everything together and ones that have separate lives and each think the other is Krazy!
5/27/2007
It's not just his title as the state's reigning snowmobile co-champion that sets 42-year-old Todd Palin apart from the nation's other first spouses. And it's not that he's one of just five who are men.
White-collar jobs in law, education or health care are typical among the current crop of first spouses, but Palin spent nearly 20 years as a blue-collar employee in the oil fields of the North Slope. And every summer he heads west to his birthplace in Dillingham to work the Bristol Bay commercial salmon fishery from his property on the Nushagak River.
A lifetime of manual labor in the state's two largest and most physically demanding industries is helping Palin carve out his role as Alaska's first spouse, or "first dude," a nickname he has in common with the Kansas governor's husband, Gary Sebelius.
Like other first spouses around the country, Palin has been asked to champion an array of causes or institutions since his wife took office in December.
His favorite is steering young Alaskans toward stable jobs in the oil and gas industry. It's a singular choice among his counterparts, whose pet issues include schools, public health, domestic violence, poverty or the arts.

Krugman says no deal.
And there’s no quid pro quo here — nothing that gives taxpayers a stake in the upside, nothing that ensures that the money is used to stabilize the system rather than reward the undeserving.
I hope I’m wrong about this. But let me say it again: Treasury needs to explain why this is supposed to work — not try to panic Congress into giving it a blank check. Otherwise, no deal.

(Barney)Frank, who has been in phone discussions with Paulson, said the secretary appeared receptive to adding some foreclosure-relief language. The second Democratic proposal — to impose compensation limits on Wall Street executives — is meeting more resistance.
“Hank says it’s a poison pill,” Frank said. “I say I don’t think it’s very patriotic for someone to not give up his golden parachute when we’re trying to save the markets.”
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0908/13676.html
"A poison pill? The executives who drove their banks into insolvency won't let the government save their banks if it means they have to give up multi-million dollar golden parachutes? After they've been paying themselves millions a year for the sheer incompetence necessary to bankrupt their companies?"
Democrats better get some spine or someone is going to be left holding a very large bag of sh-t.

wonder where our right wing religious nuts stand on usury.
Banks have separate rules. In
fact, due to high inflation, in 1980, the federal government passed a
special law which allowed national banks (the ones that have the word
"national" or the term "N.A." in their name, and savings banks that are
federally chartered) to ignore state usury limits and pegged the rate of
interest at a certain number of points above the federal reserve
discount rate. In addition, specially chartered organizations like small
loan companies and installment plan sellers (like car financing
companies) have their own rules.....

Rez,
California started out multicultural. Sure there were prejudices, segregated neighborhoods, real estate covenants etc., but from the time it became a state there were already stable populations of Mexicans (It was theirs to beging with), Asians, Hawaiians, Blacks, and White plus no history of Slavery. There has always been a comfort with other races ... even if someone didn't like them, they were used to them being there.
MO has always been mainly White and what blacks were part of the population was originally slave since it entered the union as a slave state. Until recently, that was about all the racial variety there was, so there is a lower comfort level as well as a slave history that they are still trying to get past.
Just the human condition. The familiar is less scary than the unfamiliar.

Some questions (your opinions please) ... I think Joe Biden was a bad selection for VP candidate. And I am still incensed that Obama didn't choose to make a serious offer to Hillary.
Was the choice of Joe Biden as VP candidate a plus or minus for Obama?
Will the bad will felt by some Hillary supporters be a detrimental effect on Obama's chances to win?
Did Obama's call for a "new politics" give him a net gain or net negative in the voting public's mind?
Did Hillary's tenacity in staying in the race strengthen Obama?
Had Hillary been the VP running mate for Obama, who would John McCain have chosen as his running mate?
What was his REAL motivation for choosing Sarah Palin?

Financial-market wise guys, who had been seized with fear, are suddenly drunk with hope. They are rallying explosively because they think they have successfully stampeded Washington into accepting the Wall Street Journal solution to the crisis: dump it all on the taxpayers. That is the meaning of the massive bailout Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has shopped around Congress. It would relieve the major banks and investment firms of their mountainous rotten assets and make the public swallow their losses--many hundreds of billions, maybe much more. What's not to like if you are a financial titan threatened with extinction?

If Wall Street gets away with this, it will represent an historic swindle of the American public--all sugar for the villains, lasting pain and damage for the victims. My advice to Washington politicians: Stop, take a deep breath and examine what you are being told to do by so-called "responsible opinion." If this deal succeeds, I predict it will become a transforming event in American politics--exposing the deep deformities in our democracy and launching a tidal wave of righteous anger and popular rebellion. As I have been saying for several months, this crisis has the potential to bring down one or both political parties, take your choice.
Christopher Whalen of Institutional Risk Analytics, a brave conservative critic, put it plainly: "The joyous reception from Congressional Democrats to Paulson's latest massive bailout proposal smells an awful lot like yet another corporatist lovefest between Washington's one-party government and the Sell Side investment banks."

I think the question could easily be put to rest by asking the following:
1. Does racism currently exist in the United States of America?
2. Will racism ( assuming the answer to #1 is YES ) effect the the votes casts in a general election between a white candidate and a black candidate?
Isn't that fairly logical ?
I'll take the answer off the air....thank you.

Jack, . . .I forgot to mention. .
"If others can take the same obstacles and overcome them why can't he."
I didn't know Emanuel Muhammad Cleaver was Muslim and and can't prove he was born in America so he doesn't say the pledge of allegience.
I also didn't realize Congressman Cleaver is friendly with terrorists and that he is anti-Israel and Al Queda wants him to win.
I also forgot his campaign was endorsed by the KKK and funded by Hugo Chavez.
I could come up with a few more gems but my point is these stories have inundated our media for months and they do have an enormous effect on polling.
Now, none of these lies are really race related by I would argue that Obama got hit with many of these because of who he is. They wouldn't be saying these things about Jim Tallent. Call them excuses for his poor polling or whatever you want but the rethugs wouldn't be saying these things to certain parts of the country if they didn't think many of those certain electorates wouldn't bite.

Yes , this year Cleaver could win. Wheat set the yellow dog floor in a bad year for Dems in 94 running against a popular 2 term governor. at 40%. Where as our current candidate for governor set the limit for white candidates at 38%.(thank god blunt is an idiot)
The momentum would shift the other way and he doesn't come off as a big city liberal. He connects easy with people.
He might even have enough coat tails to pull Obama up. Of course being a Congressman in Kansas City he would have needed to start preparing for it 2 years ago at the minimum. Get across the state and get his name out there so people know him.

‘Attack by Association’ Viewed as Fair Game by McCain Camp
Laura Meckler reports on the presidential race:
Don’t be shocked if you see the McCain campaign pull the controversial Rev. Jeremiah Wright out of mothballs in new attacks against one-time parishioner, Barack Obama.
McCain advisers say that they see “attack by association” as fair game now, arguing that Obama’s campaign has been using that technique to go after McCain. In particular, the Obama campaign has hammered McCain on the stump and in TV ads on the number of one-time lobbyists working for his campaign. (The McCain campaign is also angry about a Spanish-language TV ad that ties McCain to Rush Limbaugh on immigration, without ever saying that McCain took on Limbaugh and others to fight for comprehensive immigration reform.)
“They played it one way, we played it another way,” said one of McCain’s top advisers, Mark Salter. “Now we’re both going to play it the same way.”

Interesting stuff. . .
We spoke with Alex Max, a 15-year old Durango High student and Obama's Southwest Colorado Youth Outreach Coordinator. It turns out that Alex had logged onto Barack Obama's website more than any other person in La Plata County, and one day he got a call from the Obama field organizer here who asked whether he'd be willing to help coordinate high school seniors in youth turnout. There are approximately 300 students in the DHS senior class, and of those only some have birthdays before November 4. Alex has registered 30-50 students to vote, so you do the math on how effective Alex' work has been. They've been reaching out to other high school students to set up similar groups.

Hell in a Bucket -
Well I was drinkin last night with a biker
And I showed him a picture of you
I said, pal get to know her, youll like her
Seemed like the least I could do.
Cause when hes chargin his chopper
Up and down your carpeted halls
You will think I am dressed up quite proper
Never mind how I stumble and fall.
You imagine me sipping champagne from your boot
For taste of your elegant pride
I may be going to hell in a bucket, babe
But at least Im enjoying the ride, at least Ill enjoy the ride.
Cause youre a sweet little softcore pretender
Somehow, babe, it got as hot as it gets
With her black leather and gold spike suspenders
And your chain, your black whip and pets.
Well we know youre the reincarnation
Of the infamous catherine the great
And we know how you love the ovation
And the scene that it seems to create.
You imagine me sipping champagne from your boot
For taste of your elegant pride
I may be going to hell in a bucket, babe
But at least Im enjoying the ride, at least Ill enjoy the ride.
You analyze me, tend to despise me
You laugh when I stumble and fall
There may come a say when Ill dance on your grave
Unable to dance Ill still crawl across it
Unable to dance Ill still crawl
Unable to dance Ill still crawl
Unable to dance Ill crawl.
You must really consider the circus
It just might be your kind of zoo
I cant think of a place thats more perfect
For a person as perfect as you.
And its not like Im leaving you lonely
Cause I wouldnt know where to begin
Well I know you wake up here only
When the snakes come marching in.
You imagine me sipping champagne from your boot
For taste of your elegant pride
I may be going to hell in a bucket, babe
But at least Im enjoying the ride, at least Ill enjoy the ride.
Ride, ride, ride
Ride, ride, ride
Ride, ride, ride
At least Ill enjoy the ride.
At least Ill enjoy the ride.
At least Ill enjoy the ride.

WASHINGTON (AP) - "The Bush administration asked Congress on Saturday for the power to buy $700 billion in toxic assets clogging the financial system and threatening the economy as negotiations began on the largest bailout since the Great Depression.
The rescue plan would give Washington broad authority to purchase bad mortgage-related assets from U.S. financial institutions for the next two years. It does not specify which institutions qualify or what, if anything, the government would get in return for the unprecedented infusion.
......The proposal is a mere three pages long, but it gives sweeping powers to the government to dispense gigantic sums of taxpayer dollars in a program that would be sheltered from court review."

"And whether the Republican White House can influence events to help McCain"
Everything Shrub does turns to crap. If I were McCain I would ask Shrub to go to Paraguay now.
McCain has already said he opposes the "golden parachuets" I can't believe Paulson would make that a deal killer.
If the Dems approve the package because of a little tidbit thrown in for consumers, it will come back to haunt them during Obama's first term when there is no money to do anything that might really work.
I think the news media has dropped the ball by not doing better reporting on what are the root causes of this problem

“Welcome to The Jaw,” said a nervous Diamond Jim with his best smile, as he stuck out his hand. “Nice to see you guys.” Tony and Jack could have cared less, but Al greeted him warmly. “I hear you’re doing a great job here, Jim,” Capone said, pumping his hand, “but I want you to do more. We need to double the whiskey coming out of here.”
“We’ll talk, Mr. Capone. Right now, follow me. These old Chinamen tunnels will take us to any hotel in town.” The Moose Jaw tunnels were built in the late 1800s by Chinese people who lived under the stores and hotels illegally. Many worked on the CPR. It was the time when many western Canadians were afraid of what was known as the “yellow peril.” Ottawa had brought in restrictions on the number of Chinese immigrants that were allowed into the country so as not to take away too many jobs from Canadians. The government even imposed a head tax on every Chinese immigrant.
Many of these workers were unable to afford the tax, so they went underground to hide from the authorities. Eventually, many of the immigrants smuggled in their wives and even raised families in the dark secret tunnels under Moose Jaw.

Third, what's probably most amazing of all is the contrast between how gargantuan all of this is and the complete absence of debate or disagreement over what's taking place. It's not just that, as usual, Democrats and Republicans are embracing the same core premises ("this is regrettable but necessary"). It's that there's almost no real discussion of what happened, who is responsible, and what the consequences are. It's basically as though the elite class is getting together and discussing this all in whispers, coordinating their views, and releasing just enough information to keep the stupid masses content and calm.

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker
| September 21, 2008 10:24 AM
The problems cannot be resolved by shifting the debts of the banks onto the taxpayer. That's an illusion. By adding another $1 or $2 trillion dollars to the National Debt, Paulson is just ensuring that interest rates will go up, real estate will crash, unemployment will soar, and foreign central banks will abandon the dollar. In truth, there is no fix for a deleveraging market anymore than there is a fix for gravity. The belief that massive debts and insolvency can be erased by increasing liquidity just shows a fundamental misunderstanding of economics. That's why Henry Paulson is the worst possible person to be orchestrating the so called rescue project. Paulson comes from a business culture which rewards deception, personal acquisitiveness, and extreme risk-taking. Paulson is to finance capitalism what Rumsfeld is to military strategy. His leadership, and the congress' pathetic abdication of responsibility, assures disaster. Besides, why should the taxpayers be happy that the stocks of Morgan Stanley, Washington Mutual and Goldman Sachs surged on the news that there would be a government bailout yesterday? These banks are essentially bankrupt and their business models are broken. Keeping insolvent banks on life support is not a rescue plan; it's insanity.
The rest.

FORMER US president Bill Clinton has cast an approving eye at Sarah Palin's political skills, but would not be drawn on whether his wife Hillary could run for the White House in 2012.
Mr Clinton, acclaimed even by his enemies as one of the most consummate American politicians in recent history, said he did not agree with Republican vice presidential pick Mrs Palin on politics, but warned fellow Democrats not to underestimate her.
"She's an instinctively effective candidate and with a compelling story," Mr Clinton said in an interview with CNBC.
"I think it was exciting to some that she was a woman," said Mr Clinton.
"I think she, I get why she's done so well. It's a mistake to underestimate her. She's got good intuitive skills. They're significant."

don't mean to be the posting pig, but I would like for one of the MSM to ask McCain about how the Bush tax cuts (which he claims are the hallmark of growing the economy) can save the day when most likely the cuts have gotten us into this economic meltdown? They always tout the tax cuts as growing small business -- while the mega giants reap the same rewards? Greed or growth?
Forget about the cold war, drug war, anti-terroism war, we are in a wealth war. And any thinking dem, can't let the repugs win this one again and again.

The credit crisis hits all sectors.
Regional banks are in trouble -not because of subprime loans but because of contruction loans.
Mortgages in all sectors have higher default rates as do credit cards and other forms of personal loans.
Blaming one sector is wrong.
When Paulson-Rumsfeld talks about bad debt it is not limited to subprime loans.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Twelve Wall Street firms that had launched competing platforms for trading unregistered securities known as 144a issues have agreed to cooperate on a single platform operated by the Nasdaq Stock Market (NDAQ.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), the exchange said on Monday.
The move, a result a two months of negotiations between the second-largest U.S. stock exchange and the firms, will bring liquidity and transparency to a market that has so far been "opaque," said Nasdaq Chief Executive Bob Greifeld in an interview.

How about all the banks that were mandated to become "Equal opportunity lenders"? They had to lend to people that they knew wouldn't be able to pay. It isn't just the banks fault, it is also the laws that forced them to make bad loans.

Bowman,
The point of being an equal opportunity lender is so you can't discriminate on the basis or race, gender, sexual orientation or age.
All loans should be underwritten to qualify on the basis of income, equity and credit standards.
Where your complaint falls under are CRA requirement, but those are for Federal Savings Banks and not mortgage companies. Sometime the lender will stretch to make certain loans, but more often than not, they offer pricing incentives to make these loans. I don't know if it's changed but the default numbers on those loans weren't higher than normal.

ET - I would add to my answer as to why Mc chose Palin. I think he saw a chance to one-up Obama after the way he and his campaign treated HRC. People all over the world saw her and her husband being treated with insults and disdain, yet Obama was running as someone who wanted to change things.
When Obama chose yet another white male, Mc saw a chance to co-opt the change meme - he took the step Obama shied away from. It's been effective in that it has stirred up a lot of chatter, but in the long run might not be enough. I certainly hope so - I dread having to see Palin's face constantly thru the years ahead.
However no matter what comes around, I do think dems are going to pay for the way HRC was treated. They are very vulnerable on that point - had a great opportunity, and punted.
Sturge - ever time I've tried to watch Stage Door Canteen, I haven't been able to. It is way beyond poignant and I tear up - probably could have sat thru it when I was a good deal younger, but no way now.
Also, Sturge - I've been meaning to ask if you've ever read any of Dorothy Dunnett's series set in 16th century Scotland, The Lymond Chronicles. The first one is Game of Kings. It is peppered with latin quotations, which I made stabs at not very successfully.
You might enjoy it - it's not everybody's cup of tea but I find the books mesmerizing. Quite a romp.

Jack, Buffet is an old fashioned kick-the-ties type of investor. BRK is essentially a closed-end mutual fund. It sells at a discount to its net asset value (which is fine).
He's one of the few 'tycoons' that I would trust with my money. Another is the founder of Vanguard, John Bogle.
Oh, BKH also has a 'B' stock that is like a fractional share of the big one.
"I wonder if the BRK runup was also some big money looking for safety."
It could also be people covering their shorts. When I traded, short interest was always most interesting.
I found nothing wrong with selling short--it was sensible way of minimizing risk.

The Clinton's can't say no to the campaign trail because if they are active at getting down ticket people elected and it's safe to say if she can help defeat McConnell, that victory will be on her shoulders, then she will have built up the bank of good will for 2012.

The incredible shrinking Obama
Trouble is, most of the story of the campaign isn't so much coming from the candidate himself as it is created by all those who, most in worshipful terms, have talked, written and reported on or about him. The Obama campaign is one great text generator, the grand fable of his fans.
This is the nature of Mr. Obama's particular kind of charisma. People project their best wishes on him, they fill in the blank of a very attractive and plausible outline. His is not, emphatically, a charisma of deeds. For what has he done, save run for president? He is an accommodating vessel - cool, smart, biracial and "unfinished." This is the Gatsby quality of him that others have noted. Like Gatsby, he is a receptacle of others' glamorous invention.

Worlds apart on healthcare
http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/editorials/articles/2008/09/21/worlds_apart_on_healthcare/
The [supposed] upshot [of McCain's plan], analysts say, is that many young, healthy workers would reject their employers' taxable insurance benefit and either go without or find a high-deductible, low-premium policy on the private market.
[Who the hell wants to do wants to go out shopping for health insurance on the private market?]
...
The Massachusetts experiment will test whether better access to healthcare does pay off in improved prevention and lower costs. There is no comparable lab test, however, for the radical revision of healthcare that McCain is proposing. For all of his moderate positions on immigration and climate change, on healthcare he has endorsed a right-wing ideologue's vision: destroy employer-based coverage and turn Americans over to the tender mercies of private nongroup insurers in an unregulated environment. It's a prescription for disaster.

Better stick to smaking down McCain. that seems to be the only talking point Obama wants out there. Notice the Obama folks are doing the smart thing with Palin, they are treating her like the VP. They are ignoring her.

Palin will likely finish the job herself.
After the excitement - she is now like coming down to earth. She is now like a more traditional VP - who only gets media coverage when they make a gaffe.

60,000 people Warren.
She is here to stay and she will only get stronger. You had better take the Big Dawgs advice and don't underestimate her. Republicans are 90% behind McCain where as the Democrats are only 80% behind Obama.

I don't underestimate her. But I also know that if she makes one mistake - McCain is in big trouble.

But your right about the press now that Obama made it a nonstory. But her job is to talk to the base while McCain keeps his distance from them.

Not with the lowball expectations that are building up for the debate. Biden is the one in danger. If he beats her it is to be expected. If she holds her own that is front page above the fold.

Jack:
All that needs to happen is one bad sound byte from the debate or the campaign trail.
If she slips up on Foreign Policy - it will feed into the already existing narrative (voiced even by some conservatives) that she has no experience on this topic.
It will then be easy to make a powerful argument against McCain's judgment.
The biggest decision a nominee makes is VP. McCain made a rash decision that demonstrates poor judgment and he placed politics over Country.
(And even if she does not screw up - there are still plenty of people that already believe this to be true).

"You were spot on then "
Thanks for reminding me. I told you your man was going fall by the way early and sure enough that is what happened. Johnny boy didn't work out so well for you did he.

Minutes after conservative columnist George Will declared that the Senator was decidedly un-presidential is his unexpected call for the firing of SEC Chairman Chris Cox, Sam Donaldson, the long-time ABC hand, said that McCain's erratic message on the economy again raised questions about his age.

One "senior moment" for McCain in the debates - and he is toast....

It's comforting to know that America can rally behind Bush in a dress...even better to know that what Republicans demand from their opponents, they ignore from their own so long as it's their means to power.

All the Candidates’ Cars
When you have seven homes, that's a lot of garages to fill. After the fuss over the number of residences owned by the two presidential nominees, NEWSWEEK looked into the candidates' cars. And based on public vehicle-registration records, here's the score. John and Cindy McCain: 13. Barack and Michelle Obama: one.

Jamie - thanks for the link to latin phrases. I added it to my favorites - never know when something like that will come in handy. You sure do come up with the links.
Unfortunately, in this book, Dunnett throws in long verses which might be in a latin with some weird spellings. It is a remarkable series and you might enjoy it, too. Be warned, tho, it's beyond addictive if you start off enjoying it.
