Convention sets say a lot about how campaigns try to brand their candidates. Craig takes a look at the interior of the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul to see what the setup says about John McCain.
Just to get back to something that rankles me.. just which MSM are people referring to when they call 'em 'left wing'?? Does MSM include FOX News? CNN? Washington Times? LA TImes? Wall Street Journal? Any paper that publishes a Bill Krystol (not the funny one, dammit!)? A slate of radio networks? Rush? Severin? Beck? Malkin? Ingraham?
Interns are sent out to key the doors of cars with McCain stickers. You have to work your way up the campaign food chain to become an Obama martyr. I would rather have an big dollar bundler or someone like Soros go out to " Take One for the Bamer"
How have things been going today on the "Sarah Palin Is Just My Inflatable Hillary Doll" site today?
For the first time, I don't even have the desire to read through the threads since I last checked in.
I'm honestly "this close" to checking out of this place for good because of the fact that so many commentors here I respect seem to be buying into the GOP marketing plan. It's just a mystifying phenomenon that I have no interest in parsing further.
We'll see how the speech goes. Then we'll see how some of my favorite pals here react.
Are you starting to believe the drive byes now? Come on Bowman and I need your help. We need to select someone from the Obama team to send to the wall because all the media is picking on Mrs. Alaska and it must be his fault.
I thought an intern would be good enough, but he thinks it will take a heavyweight like Soros to assuage Democratic guilt over being so mean.
We just went through tout passe, tout lasse, tout casse with the Washer and Drier, Dishwasher, and then TV. We can do without tout passe, tout lasse, tout casse for awhile
WhyskyJack a driveby
Patsi a driveby
KGC a driveby

Flatus a driveby

All people I love, cyberly speaking. But all people who seem to be interested in test-tasting or sipping (if not wholeheartedly gulping) the Kool-Aid that has been brewed by McCain's goofball campaign manager.
And it hurts to watch it happen.
My two wonderful sisters -- both stalwart Hillary supporters and both stalwart feminists, both disappointed about the outcome of the Dem primary -- had this to say to me today when I allowed that I was going to watch the Palin speech.
"Fuck her. She can stick it up her ass!"
Sorry for the profanity. But that's how the people I roll with are thinking.
Jamie, you just feel that way because you feel you should, as every other Liberal hates him because he doesn't kowtow to their agenda. Conservatives hate him for the same reason. Makes me think he must be on to something.
I agree with your sisters and I don't imagine that the others will forget just what the Republicans have done over the last 8 years. Besides you are good for whatever sanity I have left.
Champ
I have no problem with literate, intelligent Conservatives. I have thoroughly enjoyed the writings and speech of many. Tucker is neither literate or particularly bright. He is glib with a host of talking points, decidedly lightweight.
We aren't talking about the GOP koolaid, it is the Democratic " Brown Acid"
Remember Woodstock? " Do not eat the Brown Acid"
It starts out pretty good then .... Well just cue up the John Sebastian segment. That was then end of the Lovin' Spoonful.
And further more, you cannot threaten to leave, others have promised. Promised, given their word, given their last bombast, but alas, they come crawling back like a snail, with their slime trail.
Stay here and get down and ugly, we want it, we need it, we expect it. Do not disappoint us.
I'm still going to watch the speech, and I will probably end up sticking with this place because of people like you...and even all those whose names I mentioned. Because I do really love them and enjoy all of their posts, and their individual personalities.
But it's just that this whole "Palin as Surrogate Hillary" thing has got me frazzled. It's a weird gender thing that otherwise right-minded people seem to be responding to...And I really don't want to argue about it anymore because I absolutely do not understand it. I just want to step off and see how things develop.
Plus, I live only about 378 miles from Sturge and Flatus, and I'd like the chance to get drunk with either of them at least one time!
LOL Lard, you're such a duplicitous tool. Craig made fun of Fred Thompson's weight in the very same thread, where was your righteous indignation then?
Craig's a cool guy, I appreciate the thread, I subscribe to many of the principles he supports, although I think he should vote. He put on a few pounds, and being a TV personality, he should realize it's evident. Scrutiny goes with the territory of being a public figure. Hey, I'm the kind of guy who tells you if you have toilet paper on your shoe; so sue me.
"Palin as Hillary" is the story the Republicans are telling. It is their party and I'm willing to listen to the fables being spun, but I sincerely doubt that any women who supported HIllary because of the issues and her "story" are about to trade in those issues for another opposite on the issues, fairly tale based purely on gender.
Champ - Lets see... you think young women who have sex SHOULDN't have contraceptives (or contraceptive education), you think the environment is a silly liberal policy, you think the Tar Sands Project in Alberta ISN'T the world's worst environmental disaster (have you SEEN Fort McMurray? It's miles and miles of kitty litter, with pools of molasses, ONE tree, and a sick bison rubbing against it wheezing "HELP ME AL GORE!")
I respect your family, let me tell you mine is overwhelmingly for Obama. I have to go with my instincts, he strikes me as a phony and I have huge reservations about his agenda and even more about what he would accomplish.
So we have two months to see how these candidates present themselves. What i do not want to see is a liars poker game where each one promises more and more things to our citizens which this nation cannot afford. Everything that the government provides is either paid for by taxes or goes to the deficit.
It is irresponsible to promise that the government will provide for every need of every citizen. The government cannot afford it and neither can the citizens of the USA.
Nothing is off the table for me, defense spending, foreign aid, domestic spending, earmarks, you name it, lets look at it.
I'm not a Democrat, I changed my registration to Independent a month ago.
I said none of what you just cited. I'm not familiar with "Tar Sands", so I certainly never referred to it, I do believe women (and people in general) should receive as much education as they can or would like on any topic, and I'm a nature buff. I share pictures of flowers from my garden, for crying out loud. I constantly rail against urban sprawl and irresponsible development, though not so much here because the topic doesn't come up much. Where the heck did you get all that, anyway?
Lardo, Sturgeon, Flatus, and Bowman drinking in the same location? Can you guys take it to Key West. I would hate to lose the whole state even in its geographically dysfunctional state.
hmmm.. I coulda sworn Jamie and I were discussing environmental issues with you just a couple of weeks ago.. perhaps I'm mistaken..
You said yesterday that you don't believe in birth control and that if they f**k, they should be prepared for the consequences. I'm pretty sure it was you who went on about 'child-bearing' weeemens being between 16 and 25 or some such.
I have no smiley face. I was actually serious at the end of my post. This blog needs Lard to stay. We must have people here with a sense of humor and the ability to disagree without being disagreeable. A thick skin and a sharp tongue help.
"How have things been going today on the "Sarah Palin Is Just My Inflatable Hillary Doll" site today?"
Lard, I can only speak for myself, but feel I have to at least try to explain some of the enthusiasm I felt when Sarah Palin gave her first speech.
It's not a matter of buying into the GOP marketing plan Lard. It's that Sarah Palin said the things that I'd like to hear Obama (or anyone) say. Did you hear her speech in Ohio the first day she was introduced? She was so authenic. And the crowd was going nuts..
The problem is, I have always seen Obama's campaign as a marketing plan. I just don't feel like I've ever seen the real man. He's not genuine, and therefore a phony. And a phony can't be trusted.
Sarah talked about ethics, reform, special interest, lobbyists, Big Oil and the 'good old boy' network. And she actually has a record of having done something about them. She gave examples of things she actually changed as governor.
She talked about patriotism in a way I could believe. It drives me nuts when Obama starts talking like a peacher. She even spoke words of praise for Hillary and Ferraro for paving the way for her, multiple times.
She talked about having a clear mission. It was so refreshing, and to me inspiring so I was immediately taken. It doesn't mean I've made of my mind, but I am really impressed. Not with the Republicans, but with her. She's a true Patriot and that really shines through, along with a tremendous amount of enthusiasm..
My stance on birth control is personal, I don't feel any obligation to impose it on others. I believe contraception should be available, but I don't believe there is any form that is 100% reliable, so one should be prepared for the consequences of sexual behavior if engaging in it.
No, it wasn't me with whom you were discussing environmental issues... I wasn't here a couple weeks ago.
Whatever regarding Carlson. At the end of the day, he's just another talking-head. I still think he gets a bum rap, with the impetus for such being Jon Stewart's supposed immolation of him, pardon the pun. Personally, I thought Stewart came off as a 'dick' (to use his own word) in that segment.
But I fear that sometimes my anger and ignorance overtake me, and then I am lost. And I don't want to be the kind of person who gratuitously unleashes anger on others online, even if it is disguised as "humor." That's what I'm trying to watch out for, because I really do think this is a special community here that has lately endured a lot of self-inflicted abuse.
I don't want any further misunderstandings on my part to add to that. I love the people I named earlier, even though I haven't met any of them personally.
The words are nice, but the platform isn't. Remember as VP she would have absolutely no power other than that granted to her by the President and that could be revoked at any time. No matter how much you might respect her as an individual, you have to look at what the Republicans have done for more than a decade and ask if you want more of the same, because that is what you would get with McCain.
I think Champ has a lot of important things to say and has as much right as anyone else here to say them here. He made a mistake with the cookie comment, and it would be nice if he would apologize and not make rude comments to Craig again.
But who here hasn't made mistakes at sometime or other?
You are right about Champ. He is clearly extremely smart. And of course he has a right to express himself here as he sees fit, as long as he understands the rest of us will call bullshit on him as we see fit.
And lots of the rest of us have made similar mistakes, although none quite as horrible. (My own worst was the uncalled for attack on our guest Mudcat a couple weeks ago)
So my guess is that a sincere, non-ironic reply from Champ tp Craig would probably do wonders for his reputation.
All that sacred life. I must go check to see how long the line is of Republican women offering their wombs for "snowflake babies". The last time I checked it was 250 out of 400,000, but they don't want the other 399,750 used for research.
After the past 2 Rep conventions where they really really tried to show their diversity, this one seems to have returned to the good old days. Not a diverse face anywhere (other than reporters.. must be NICE to be an 'east coast elite reporter' on the convention floor..lol)
Hey Lard
Yes,This is a special community here.I talk about this place to everyone.I can't believe how TM came into my life at just the right time.I gave up MSNBC and then CNN and found TM.I would say that's a nice trade UP!! Here's hoping Hanna stays out in the Atlantic, cause all that rain kinda makes the St. Augustine grow...HA HA!
Lard,
Bear is in Texas, longing for a Pastrami sandwich.
Bear,
If you order a corned beef on Rye, they can probably make one. Just ask Kinky Friedman he wrote the following song entitled Highway Cafe.
She was only a waitress in a highway café
Poured coffee from dusk until dawn
But she was heart broken twenty-four hours a day
For she longed for her trucker who'd gone.
¡°i'll make you the corned beef on rye¡±
She'd sing with a gleam in her eye.
The headlights were burning,
The big wheels were turning,
Her sweetheart would come bye and bye.
When he'd park his great semi off route 64
She'd blush with a sweet little sigh,
For at half past eleven he'd walk in the door
And he'd order her corned beef on rye.
¡°i'll make you the corned beef on rye¡±
She'd sing with a gleam in her eye.
The jukebox was blarin';
His soft eyes were starin',
The corned beef would come bye and bye.
All the drivers remember that night, so they say,
She'd said her farewells to them all,
But when the hands on the clock reached a quarter past twelve
Her suitcase still stood in the hall.
And the hours passed by even as the trucks passed by out on the highway
And then two grim highway patrolmen came into the place,
Shook the rain from their hats and as the poor girl
Brought them their coffee, she overheard the words that they said.
¡°oh curly, did you see that old diesel flattened out like your damned nose up by the predicament tonight ? ¡±
¡°well, d'you know, he jack-knifed that son of a bitch slicker than owl shit!¡±
¡°now gimme a little joe over here, honey.¡±
¡°hey man, you don't suppose that he had a little ol' hog waitin' on down the line somewhere, do you ? ¡±
¡°oh, oh, oh, hell, curly, don't you know that them truckers they got to take up a little filly at every, every café from here to las cruces!
Now there is a small truck-stop on route 64
If you happen to be passin' by,
But there's a trucker who never stops in anymore
And a waitress who wished she knew why.
¡°i'll make you the corned beef on rye¡±
She sings with a tear in her eye.
And as her dark eyes are glistening
There's someone who's listening
In that highway café in the sky.
¡°i'll make you the corned beef on rye¡±
She sings with a tear in her eye.
And as her dark eyes are glistening
There's someone who's listening
In that highway café in the sky.
¡°i'll make you the corned beef on rye¡±
She sings with a tear in her eye.
And as her dark eyes are glistening
There's someone who's listening
In that highway café in the sky.
Time for a little levity... we were watching as the Palin family were seated..
I said to Mr Tylenol: "ohh sure as shootin, he's gonna marry that girl." Had a bit of a giggle and then Mr Tylenol said, "wow.. when it's an NRA Mom, that's really IS a shotgun wedding!"
Well, Lard, if we are all going to get drunk, we ought to do it in a county that we can remake in our own image. Or, at a minimum, a county that none of us plan to ever visit again. Or, at a really absolute minimum, a county that will understand that it's important for 'older' people to go out and get snockered every once in a while.
I think we are looking at the past of the party with Rommny and Gulliani. Even Huckaby as he has proved that he was too much of a light weight. I wonder what the future will look like.
Wait.. maybe this WILL be birth control in a weird sort of way:
Next time some kid wants to get it on with a highschool friend, maybe he'll wonder if her mother will end up draggin his ass to Minesota for all the world to see?
Hey Flatus -- speaking of getting drunk - I was thinking of a new drinking game. Drinkup everytime you see a non-white person at the republican convention....
Only problem. You will stay really really sober and thirsty.
The future still looks like a bunch of all white, born agains, with an agenda that I find so closed minded, and prejudicial that it is positively anathema and about two steps away from a KKK convention.
If Craig asked for an apology, or implied that he did, I'd give him one. I don't feel the compulsion to satiate you in your self-admitted irrational state by offering him one. I'd be willing to wager that Craig really doesn't give a hoot what some random anonymous commenter has to say regarding him personally, though that's just an assumption, because he has only personally interacted with me twice and referenced me once. He is more like a God of this land than a denizen from my perspective, and I've always been somewhat of an iconoclast, for better or worse.
Be that as it may, every complimentary thing I've said regarding him has been genuine, whether you perceive it so or not. That's the best I can do for you. I can state with confidence that I feel absolutely no need to tailor my message to any particular audience or engage in duplicity for the sake of acceptance, especially in an anonymous online forum. If I was so concerned about my reputation here, I could easily shed this persona and create another one just as quickly, and as many others here do, but I don't for the sake of consistency and culpability.
As far as "someone else" is concerned, he hasn't participated today, so I will level no slander against him, but I will say I've never "kissed his ass", of that I can assure you.
By the way, I regard humility as a virtue, and accept it willingly when I feel I need it, but your characterization of me is so inaccurate it didn't really sting. The only reason I offer this explanation is because you've expressed some semblance of contrition concerning your attack on me, and I appreciate it. You've got a bad read on me, but that's OK, you wouldn't be the only one, and that's no one's fault but mine. I'm kind of an asshole sometimes. Deal with it.

The old bornagains like dobson ect are losing out to, new ones that have a different agenda. You can look at tonights convention and see it is 20 years out of date.
Look in thy glass, and tell the face thou viewest
Now is the time that face should form another;
Whose fresh repair if now thou not renewest,
Thou dost beguile the world, unbless some mother.
For where is she so fair whose unear'd womb
Disdains the tillage of thy husbandry?
Or who is he so fond will be the tomb
Of his self-love, to stop posterity?
Thou art thy mother's glass, and she in thee
Calls back the lovely April of her prime:
So thou through windows of thine age shall see
Despite of wrinkles this thy golden time.
But if thou live, remember'd not to be,
Die single, and thine image dies with thee.
no jamie, i saw GOP delegates bringing their signs with them today as they went thru security. dem delegates said they were told that they could not make their own signs, for security reasons.

My guess would be the are trying to create the perception that they have more enthusiastic grass-roots support than the competition, while the Democrats, justifiably so, have more reason to be concerned what their rank-and-file surrogates are disseminating, this past weekend's commentary being an example. Regardless, one of the more frequently used images from the DemCon is some dude holding what looks to be a home-made 'Hope" sign, looks like it was drawn with a magic marker.
Do you happen to know if the Royal Shakespeare Company or anyone else of that caliber has actually tried to "produce" the sonnets? They've done every play this way and that..
But the sonnets are so beautiful, and it seems weird that we can't see them produced on stage or (of course, on all the digital media that we so love).
May have been message control. Also, weren't all their signs printed on both sides, or designed in some way that an alternative message couldn't be written on the reverse side.
The accent seemed very much from Toronto...maybe it's the hockey mom thing..
Someone help me out here...do politicians always talk about their kids this much?
As for Rudy,
If voodoo is really the dark arts, I am hoping that he get's sodomized with a peroxide soaked plunger every time he looks at a Hatian and thinks Nig@$# or anytime he thinks 9/11 and hears a cash register ring.
It is what happens when a bunch of mid westerners who went broke in California headed to Alaska to go broke again. If they didn't die, they bumped up against Canadians and that is the sound that happened.
I'm sober and I don't understand the "you've been had" thing...she's giving a good speech to a receptive crowd but she is going to far exceed her nominee and is that really a good thing?
It is going to take some fancy push back. Earlier I said send Prez Clinton South and Sen. Clinton west, leave and hope they could talk all the average people out of listening to this straight talk snow job.
Leave Obama and Biden in the big cities they understand.
I feel left out; I can't watch the speech. I'm assuming from Craig's last comment, Palin did well. If any self-perceived independents (or partisans who want to play devil's advocate) want to offer the take on her performance, I'd be curious.
I'm not gonna talk you out of it Craig. I said in an earlier thread just how effective I think she will be with the common folk. So far the people around me love her. I think she very likely might carry McCain. Obama is going to have to rethink his strategy some.
The curious thing is she's concentrating on her area of expertise energy.
She's been citing the new Axis of Evil, venezuela, iran and russia.
Venezuela has no money if they don't sell their oil. They may withhold it from the US, but they would find willing buyers in China.
Same with Iran, Russia...who knows.
With all the talk about new nuclear plants and coal plants, how will they be able to circumvent all of the state regulations that make any new plants years away?
How do we get up to speed with nuclear when we are no longer close to being a world leader in nuclear technology?
The Democrats are accused of promising things they can't deliver, how do they deliver on all of this?
bear, my "you've been had" remark is about my initial reaction that this woman has a common touch like nothing i've seen in a long time, and my guess is that she can reach way beyond this convention hall. but, like i say, i stand ready to be talked out of it.
If she were smart, she'd have McCain declared incompetent and run it on her own.
Champ, the speech isn't bad. Delivery is okay. Visually, the changing background is annoying. Voice, the accent is curious...doesn't sound Alaskan...more Canadian. She dressed in a Grey Suit coat, black knee length skirt...no American flag pin, but has the star pin that shows a deployed son or daughter. As subliminal messages go, it will be effective, especially after the Republican go back to the Obama isn't a patriot non pin wearer thing.
If you are a believer, you're in rapture. If you're not, you're a sceptic.
Craig, I agree that the Clinton's won't do anything else for Obama. I think they are focusing on 2012 and will work to bury him in such a way that they will try to pilfer his www network for their own gain. I think the only way she wins the White House is to follow Obama to office. Palin has much more charisma than Hillary and I can already hear Pro Palin people saying she's a better mother for raising 5 kids, not just one...
barack, u cant trust a republican snake they will always bite u after u try to help them...next time the media is trashing her unwed pregnant daughter keep ur mouth closed!
Craig - I think you are correct that she delivers a good speech that evokes the common touch. But anyhalf way decent politician should be able to do that. We will see how she fares when she actually has to work without a script, and has to answer questions from the evil media
This reminds me of how much time was wasted at the Democratic convention last week. I can't remember any speech that did a complete attack on the other party like this.
Being an x republican from a political family in Missouri let me tell you its not about who tells the truth with the republicans. They say whatever they want to say because they know that the common people generally don't bother to fact check. They tend to take whatever they are told as the gospel. It's the impression that they are after.
They don't care how they create it. Haven't you all heard things here tonight that are just a pack of lies? Haven't you noticed how they tend to talk as if you don't want to be one of "those people" when talking about dems. so that you feel a need to be accepted by the "right people, with the right ideas". They understand people who are having a hard time are already fearful and the capitalize on that.
craig, u just cant get over hilliary lost, anyone with a skirt will sway u,,,, she is giving a good speech but remember the test comes when she has to answer questions about her beliefs, associations and decisions she has made,
It's a well written speech, one that if it were delivered by McCain or Thompson, or most other Republicans would probably sound a bit jingoistic. She'd delivering it so well, does she fall into the Obama trap of being just a speech? Wouldn't that be the reaction were the shoe on the other foot?
You comments remind me of my first day of Catholic high school, Xavier, in Middletown, CT, my principle, Brother Kelly walked into class and said the following:
"Gentlemen, some of you will go on to 4 successful years at this school and some of you won't last the day. As a life long educator, it is important that anyone who sets foot in my class room learns something.
So with that, please remember that a stiff dick has no conscience."
You are absolutely right. It is all smoke and mirrors. Unfortunately, the mass of people like the pretty pictures. and feeling good about themselves.without having to actually think about it.
What speech highlights is the following scenario in my opinion, one which would be better served were Palin the top of the ticket:
What do you define as change this election. While both tickets set history, what is the history this country wants to make?
1. Do you want the first person of color elected to any major position of leadership in US history?
2. Do you want to elect the oldest person to start their first term in office?
3. Do you want the first woman elected to one of the top 2 positions of leadership in US history.
It's going to come down to comfort level and suspect that in this half way society, too many people will be scared away by electing the black man.
People are used to the old guys running things. With Pelosi as speaker, people are used to seeing a women with authority in Washington. They may not like her but hey, she's easy on the eyes and people love hate sex fantasies.
With the exception of the occasional governor, American's only want to see black men with authority on the side lines of our athletic fields.
Hopefully she will step on her tail a few times in the near future. She hasn't been in a national spot light. Let's see how she does when things aren't so prepared for her.
I have such a negative visceral reaction to the Repubs that I can hardly stand it.
OK, Craig, here ya go:
Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper & Trig are not only silly names, they're elitist.
The woman has public speaking ability due to being a beauty queen and in MSM, I think it was. Talk is cheap, isn't it? I have no idea, nor does anyone else know if she could be a decent President.
Any party that cheers and chants "Drill baby drill", are morons, dangerous and scary.
Beehives & bangs went out with the 1950's. They're true conservatives. *will women now wear THAT?*
Guess I forgot to mention those simple cliches are based on what the GOP thinks the voters want to hear instead of the actual truth.
That is my biggest problem with McCain and the GOP re: this Palin thing. For months now - they have talked about Obama's dangerous lack of experience and his celebrity status. And now they have selected a GOP carbon copy of Obama for VP.
Obama/Palin = emphasis on judgment, speaking ability and personal story over Washington experience.
Now heck - I don't have a problem with examining the person instead of the resume - but I do have a problem with how the GOP will unapologetically lie to the American people to win an election.
(And let's not forget where the lies of the last Republican President led us...)
Comparing it to the speech by Texas governor Ann Richards in 2000, this was just as effective, perhaps more so, without the career ending meanness that was in Mrs Richards' speech.
now im super glad barack didnt name hilliary vp, palin would take hilliary lunch from her and eat it right in front of hilliary. hilliary would be no match for palin. and she is much prettier :) if biden loses the debate with her at least he can claim he is was trying to be a gentleman and take it easy on her, but if hilliary was vp and lost the debate it would really look bad.
The biggest lies were in the tax proposal part of the speech. She listed people, groups, and businesses who should be afraid of the tax proposals of Barack Obama. It was classic Republican scare tactics. She never said they WOULD be taxed only that they should be AFRAID of being taxed.
The truth is that none of the people or groups she named would be subject to any of the taxes proposed by Obama.
We won't go into the the Rah rah rah about "victory" in the War on terra .... that was just plain barf o matic.
JohnR
I disagree with you about Hillary not being able to handle her. Hillary is a much more seasoned candidate, and a woman attacking a woman on equal gender footing wouldn't be as touchy as a boring milk toast old white guy is going to be. I would just love to see this woman in a head to head match with Hillary after she pissed her off. MUD FIGHT!! Sorry, been in redneck land too long!!
Yeah, but as much as I loved my two favorite Texans, Ann Richards and Molly Ivins, we have to remember that the Dems LOST that election, even though that silver foot line was fantastic.
That's why I am laughing if the Clinton's think they will win in 2012.
Palin is a cult of personality that would embarrass Clinton in a head to head, especially with 4 years in VP to work from.
The only way HRC gets to the oval is to follow Obama, not instead of Obama. Unfortunately, she has a history of misreading her hand. If you watch enough poker, you realize that having pocket Aces doesn't guarantee you win the pot...
Carl Bernstein just called her a "Great Cultural Warrior" and the party now belongs to their right wing, just the people McCain campaigned against the first time around.
u might be right... palin seems like a tough cookie, but i think she will be torn to pieces by rumours and accusations by the obama campaign with the media help
The fact is that Obama and Palin have comprable experience. Let's call it X.
For months - the central focus of the McCain campaign has been that X is not enough. It is so far from being enough that America might fall of the face of the planet if Obama is elected.
Then, low and behold, McCain nominates a person with X for a job that requires that the person must be ready to lead from day one.
All of a sudden X is more than enough - and anyone who questions whether X is enough is guilty of slander.
Cults of personality usually ebb and flow just like fads do. Especially if they become a coffee table joke. That is what the repugs were trying to do to Obama tonight. If people can be educated to see through her, she won't last. Of course that is also my fear about Obama. Both he and Palin have issues that could become huge in a negative way.
Well, Palin's speech was hit not only out of the park, but across the street...Add that to my "best convention speeches ever" list.
They ought to take McCain off the stump and put Palin out there. I've noticed that the comments like "she's a lot like me" started filtering out in the last 24 hours. She's going to go a long way to attracting undecided women. As I said earlier in the week, she's going to be real popular with "NASCAR Moms".
palin goes after michelle obama the spouse lol, that means her husband with his past and his membership in an organization where the leader is anti american is fair game, this is going to be fun. at least rev jeremiah wright served in the military
I like her. She has something that will appeal to just about everyone. An attractive family that many can relate to, not perfect, but real. Can't criticize her experience because her's is better than Obama's and she is only running for Vice President. She is taking advantage of Hillary having warmed up the country for a woman and she gave Hillary credit for that.
You have to give the Republicans a lot of credit for choosing her. It was a very smart move. The media may try to trash her but it won't be easy without stepping on someone's toes including Obama.
I don't see McCain or Palin as being typical Republicans. Both seem to be a compromise between the two parties. I am a Democrat but I will be watching those two.
BTW, I live down in SW La. and missed the bullet, Gustav. Thanks to anyone who sent prayers. Unfortunately I severely injuried my back trying to get everything secured before the storm. Thank God for drugs.
I think Obama will have his biggest chance to deliver in the debates. He has to destroy McCain and make him seem like a senile old fool. You know, "dance like a butterfly and sting like a bee". He has to make people leary of McCain's ability to handle the job. And he has got to get the young vote to actually vote for real. McCain or Palin will not have nearly as much influence on the young.
I really don't think Hillary will do much beyond the requisite appearance every now and then.
Paul Begala will be more effective refuting Palin that Hillary will. She couldn't beat one better organized "political wunderkind"...what makes you believe she can fare better against her?
Gov Palin gave a very good speech, and I liked her.Problem is, its the same old Republican tired theme's(taxes, war, family, taxes) repackaged and delivered by the nice Gov.Palin, but BULLSHIT just the same!!
Here's how us marketeers define Exurban -- Sarah Palin's Target Market...
Out beyond the established suburbs lies a semi-rural land inhabited by suburban-type families,
householders aged 35 to 54 with plenty of school-aged kids and teens but some empty nests. Sixty
percent are dual-earner couples. Their below average proportion of college-educated parents puts them
at a slight disadvantage compared to Suburban Wave. Still, 87 percent own their homes. White non-
Hispanics predominate. Average family income is $80,000. Vacations lean to family camping and local
theme parks.
i agree with everything u have said, i just think palin opened a door huge and wide to be attacked. and i sense the media is so hungry for a new environment her part pat buchannan speech will be a turn off and motivate them to help trash her. the media might have backed off 8 years ago but not now

Rush? Severin? Beck? Malkin? Ingraham?

I'm honestly "this close" to checking out of this place for good because of the fact that so many commentors here I respect seem to be buying into the GOP marketing plan. It's just a mystifying phenomenon that I have no interest in parsing further.

Lard,
I respect your family, let me tell you mine is overwhelmingly for Obama.

I said none of what you just cited.

Chloe,
The words are nice, but the platform isn't. Remember as VP she would have absolutely no power other than that granted to her by the President and that could be revoked at any time. No matter how much you might respect her as an individual, you have to look at what the Republicans have done for more than a decade and ask if you want more of the same, because that is what you would get with McCain.

And lots of the rest of us have made similar mistakes, although none quite as horrible. (My own worst was the uncalled for attack on our guest Mudcat a couple weeks ago)

Lard,
Bear is in Texas, longing for a Pastrami sandwich.
Bear,
If you order a corned beef on Rye, they can probably make one.
The jukebox was blarin';
¡°eh, eh. yeah, don't they! ah ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah ..¡±
¡°ah ah ah ah ah, he he he he he ...¡±
Now there is a small truck-stop on route 64
If you happen to be passin' by,
But there's a trucker who never stops in anymore
And a waitress who wished she knew why.
¡°i'll make you the corned beef on rye¡±
She sings with a tear in her eye.
And as her dark eyes are glistening
There's someone who's listening
In that highway café in the sky.
¡°i'll make you the corned beef on rye¡±
She sings with a tear in her eye.
And as her dark eyes are glistening
There's someone who's listening
In that highway café in the sky.
¡°i'll make you the corned beef on rye¡±
She sings with a tear in her eye.
And as her dark eyes are glistening
There's someone who's listening
In that highway café in the sky.
¡°i'll make you the corned beef on rye¡± ..

McCain and the GOP will bring change by:
(Rudy G. filled in the specifics)
-Lowering taxes
-Making goverment smaller
-Drilling more

These are the exact same things that the Republicans have been promising for decades.

Look in thy glass, and tell the face thou viewest
Now is the time that face should form another;
Whose fresh repair if now thou not renewest,
Thou dost beguile the world, unbless some mother.

Regardless, one of the more frequently used images from the DemCon is some dude holding what looks to be a home-made 'Hope" sign, looks like it was drawn with a magic marker.

Same with Iran, Russia...who knows.

Now heck - I don't have a problem with examining the person instead of the resume - but I do have a problem with how the GOP will unapologetically lie to the American people to win an election.

now im super glad barack didnt name hilliary vp, palin would take hilliary lunch from her and eat it right in front of hilliary. hilliary would be no match for palin. and she is much prettier :) if biden loses the debate with her at least he can claim he is was trying to be a gentleman and take it easy on her, but if hilliary was vp and lost the debate it would really look bad.

One of the biggest lies that the Repubs keep propagating and focusing on is Congress.
For SIX LONG years, they were the MAJORITY. It's only been the past 2 years that they've been the minority.
Lots of folks remember that and won't let them get away with it.

JohnR,
That's why I am laughing if the Clinton's think they will win in 2012.

Png Pong:
The fact is that Obama and Palin have comprable experience. Let's call it X.
For months - the central focus of the McCain campaign has been that X is not enough. It is so far from being enough that America might fall of the face of the planet if Obama is elected.
Then, low and behold, McCain nominates a person with X for a job that requires that the person must be ready to lead from day one.
All of a sudden X is more than enough - and anyone who questions whether X is enough is guilty of slander.
I find that type of hypocrisy offensive.

She's going to give the Dems problems..
Posted by: spike | September 4, 2008 12:00 AM
The argument that Palin would embarass Clinton is premature.
I think it is based on America's short attention span and our impatient desire to latch onto the next great thing.
We have been watching this woman for less than a week. Clinton earned respect for fighting hard for months.
Let's just say the jury is still out.
(Also - Hillary is going to be one of the few Democratic politicians that will really be able to lash out at Palin. Let's see if she does...)

Just because I haven't had the Obama koolaide doesn't mean I'm drinking the beverage of choice from McC.
It should be possible to discuss what is going on without donning a cheerleaders uniform.
I went to see Bottle Shock tonight. I highly recommend it although it may be to cal centric for a national audience.

"The fact is that Obama and Palin have comprable experience."
Warren, your finding of hypocrisy is based on the above premise which, in my mind, is simply incorrect.
Mr Obama and Mrs Palin have been on too completely different career tracks. Hers was geared toward executive positions while his were legislative.
They simply aren't comparable.

Warren,
I really don't think Hillary will do much beyond the requisite appearance every now and then.
Paul Begala will be more effective refuting Palin that Hillary will. She couldn't beat one better organized "political wunderkind"...what makes you believe she can fare better against her?
