"The crisis that has seized Wall Street over the last few days caught the campaigns of both Barack Obama and John McCain flat-footed.
Neither man, as we wrote yesterday, has a demonstrated expertise on the issue and national polling shows that voters aren't sure whether Obama or McCain would do a better job in managing the economy as president.
So, with both campaigns scrambling to win the issue over the next few days, The Fix solicited the opinions of a handful of Republican and Democratic strategists, asking them what specifically they would advise their party's candidate to do in the short term to stake their claim to this critical issue."
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/2008/09/handling_the_economic_crisis_1.html?nav=rss_blog
The Fix offers its recommendations for each campaign.
When my property and house flooded, FEMA came house to house to write out damage claims and get people immediate aid. The Red Cross and others set up central locations were food, clothes etc were available.
The County moved quickly to get a lot of dumpsters in the area so clean up could begin.
The biggest problems were lack of information and getting the right information to people without power etc.

This should have been the point of attack after the nomination was clinched. Maybe this gaffe happened early enough to reclaim the higher ground in the campaign but I fear the electorate will rally around the party in power because they will buy the fundamentals being "American workers and resources"...
Never mind the fact that Republicans have been against improving the minimum wage or worker benefits...hey it sounds good at least...

Ronald Reagan is another example of an inarticulate man.
He could read a great speech since he was a very good actor.
He could deliver well prepared speeches with great punchlines.
But, like some other political figures, he was very inarticulate when speaking off the cuff. One of the big problems here was a significant lack of background and information about the issues.
Of course, the public is easily fooled by the smooth snakeoil salesman..

The current economic crisis's ramification are so profound that the last thing we need are ad hoc 'solutions' from candidates muddying the waters.
This is a case for the technocrats to develop solutions that should be approved and implemented by our current batch of elected officials--as distasteful as that may be to almost all of us.

HA! Barack Obama approved your post today , Craig?
Posted by: champ | September 16, 2008 3:50 PM
flatus, you are correct. Who knows what the economy will look like by January? And the opinions of the candidates are pretty predictable at this point - they should go on record only if they have something to say that is contrary to the party line they have been spouting as an approach to the economy for the past few months. The economy for then next 4 months is Bush's baby. He has to try and fix it if he can - and by him I mean the people in his Admin and their advisors who have a clue - I certainly don't mean him individually.

Here's an interesting bit of news re: Bob Barr - he failed to qualify for the WV ballots in Nov., and one of our fed judges threw out the lawsuit brought by his supporters to get him put on the ballot. Judge Copenhaver found "it was their lack of reasonable diligence that ultimately thwarted their effort" and that they "would have satisfied the two requirements had they commenced their efforts just two to three weeks earlier." Too bad.

Fiorina: Palin Lacks Experience to Run a Company
Former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina amended her comments from earlier today that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin could not run a major corporation like HP.
How? By saying that Sen. John McCain couldn’t run one either.

LOL- If you wanted a CEO for President, you should have voted for Romney.
Posted by: champ | September 16, 2008 4:15 PM
champ - I don't have time to get into it - other duties call. The president's two primary responsibilities are the economy and the nation's security. Damage may have been done, but that doesn't mean that the president can turn a blind eye to the economy that his policies in some measure serve as the foundation of. It's true enough that he can't directly cure all or even most of the economy's ills, at least in the short term, but whether the problems are the result of the failure of his policies as I contend or external forces over which he had little control, he can encourage action by the Fed and other arms of the government to restore confidence in the markets - at a minimum. He tried one stimulus package that wsa too little, and probably too late. I hope he's considering some other approach.

The Milgram experiment was a seminal series of social psychology experiments conducted by Yale University psychologist Stanley Milgram, which measured the willingness of study participants to obey an authority figure who instructed them to perform acts that conflicted with their personal conscience. Milgram first described his research in 1963 in an article published in the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology,[1] and later discussed his findings in greater depth in his 1974 book, Obedience to Authority: An Experimental View.[2]
The experiments began in July 1961, three months after the start of the trial of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem. Milgram devised the experiments to answer this question: "Could it be that Eichmann and his million accomplices in the Holocaust were just following orders? Could we call them all accomplices?"[3]
Milgram summarized the experiment in his 1974 article, "The Perils of Obedience", writing:
The legal and philosophic aspects of obedience are of enormous importance, but they say very little about how most people behave in concrete situations. I set up a simple experiment at Yale University to test how much pain an ordinary citizen would inflict on another person simply because he was ordered to by an experimental scientist. Stark authority was pitted against the subjects' [participants'] strongest moral imperatives against hurting others, and, with the subjects' [participants'] ears ringing with the screams of the victims, authority won more often than not. The extreme willingness of adults to go to almost any lengths on the command of an authority constitutes the chief finding of the study and the fact most urgently demanding explanation.
Ordinary people, simply doing their jobs, and without any particular hostility on their part, can become agents in a terrible destructive process. Moreover, even when the destructive effects of their work become patently clear, and they are asked to carry out actions incompatible with fundamental standards of morality, relatively few people have the resources needed to resist authority.[4]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment
interesting experiment about who among us would make good nazis.
Before conducting the experiment, Milgram polled fourteen Yale University senior-year psychology majors as to what they thought would be the results. All of the poll respondents believed that only a few (average 1.2%) would be prepared to inflict the maximum voltage. Milgram also informally polled his colleagues and found that they, too, believed very few subjects would progress beyond a very strong shock.[1]
In Milgram's first set of experiments, 65 percent (26 of 40)[1] of experiment participants administered the experiment's final 450-volt shock, though many were very uncomfortable doing so; at some point, every participant paused and questioned the experiment, some said they would refund the money they were paid for participating in the experiment. No participant steadfastly refused to administer shocks before the 300-volt level.[1]

That particular "jump to conclusions, hang first hold trial later" mentality indicates someone who has no powers of logical analysis or insight at all and can therefor be ignored completely.

Senators Seek DOJ for Help in Preventing Disenfranchisement of Voters Losing Homes
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/
By Kate Klonick - September 16, 2008, 5:55PM
After reports that the Michigan Republican party planned to challenge voters whose homes had been foreclosed, thirteen senators have petitioned Attorney General Michael Mukasey to ensure that such voters would not be harassed or intimidated at their polling places.

I don't care for either candidate but will take no chances on whether a democratic senate will accept a pro-life scotus nomination. I will vote for Obama and hope congress will make him behave - that's a less dangerous risk than hoping for a balanced scotus.
Can you imagine a 7 to 2 split on the court, or even a 6 to 3 split, all of them young enough to serve for 20 to 30 years or longer? That's a nightmare waiting to happen and Hillary Clinton has been saying it since she started her campaign.
Just think, 30 years of scotus rulings favoring corporations and churches and rich people. shudder.

You know what I find amazing?
Obama spent $8 million for advertising in Florida compared to McCain spending nothing and he has lost it. A state that Al Gore won imo. McCain has been treating Florida like it is solid red and it looks like it is. BTW that doesn't count all the money he has spent opening up 50 offices and hiring 350 staff for them.

But where the hell has everyone been for the past 5 years, at least? I'm no economist, but I've been saying the economy is falling apart. And now the house of cards is falling.
I don't want to be an economist or politician, but I want the jerks I vote for to be political and reign in the deregulated economy.

1. Knotheads are those who regularly spew venom at posters.
2. Avoid reading their posts whenever possible.
3. Avoid reading posts that respond to knotheads.
I have four on my list. Occasionally a post slips through. I tend to be more bemused than anything else when their predictable diatribes slip through the Ignore the Knotheads net.

I would like to point out that I am one who tends to post at night, mostly because I am on the west coast. I've seen some pretty lousy things said in the morning posts as well as later. I don't see much difference between the 2 times, and I don't think I have ever resorted to name calling altho I have stood up for some who have been picked on in my opinion.
I also would love to be able to read all the posts - the other night I skipped at least half.
But I don't know that it can be helped. I will stay here as long as possible, but if I have to skip most of the posts it's a waste of time.
BOTH SIDES and ALL SIDES have gone too far so anyone who wants to blame either is going too far again. I like hearing what others have to say, but not what they think of the rest of this group. It seems some people just want to fight and insult and I don't think it is possible to curb them, aside from it's being
contrary to the very purpose of this blog.
I don't understand the desire to bring the BC back into the fold if all we do is fight and tell others to leave, but it does add more thoughts and communication. There are maybe 5 or 6 here who are requirements for me - if they leave, I'll really hate it.
Will it help to make a list of things that are over the line?
Perhaps references/attacks on/against sexual orientation...intelligence...ability to tolerate...integrity....
taking offence at others' comments...basic humanity.
Those are the most egregious of the types of things I've seen here, especially lately, and I really believe the people who posted them DON'T really believe what they say. Everybody here is basically decent, but so many can't stop snapping back.
I suppose someone will think I sound like a moralistic lecturer, but plenty of thers have put in their thoughts and I want to as well.

Now I DO agree with that .. all the women in my family have had to go on Birth Control pills at one time or another in their life ...
For REAL medical purpose it was made for, to help regulate menstruation, birth control was a side affect ... it's doesn't make sense not to cover them ...
yeah, I know the agrument, "it will make girls have sex sooner & more often" ....
The thing is, girls, if they're going to have sex, will do it with or w/o the pil .. but this way, at least there won't be any unwanted babies ... JMHO

Yeah, I tried to discuss the economic crisis today and discuss the Fed's role in it, but it went nowhere. You must have been busy making Obama signs on company time with company supplies and missed it. Don't blame me.

I've always known that Obama is full of hot air. I was surprised at the degree of misrepresentation cited on CNN, particularly the Obama ad about McCain voting to cut education funding. That ad was a simple like with four of the five votes represented on the screen misrepresented.
Everyone makes a mistake once in awhile, but it is clear that these two weak candidates have decided to lie their way to the White House.
Jeffery Toobin followed up with his usual "I love Barack" rant..I wonder when he gets his check from the campaign.

Although I attribute it to general "suck up to the host stuff." I saw Toobin on with Lou Dobbs and I thought they were going to lynch an illegal immigrant as part of the segment. It's like he will say anything to be a pundit.
The Obama media has been in a tizzy over the disrespect from McCain. It will be hard for them to keep their tizzy all frothed up because Obama is as big a liar as McCain.

Hmmm. It is 7 years after 9/11, and many of the "9/11 commission's" suggestions are still in the planning stages. Or worse, they were shelved as not providing opportunities to make a buck or opportunities for bush to increase his republican totalitarianism.
Too bad Ken Lay and Charles Keating aren't around to staff that commission. I guess mccain will have to settle for neil bush and jack abramov.

Flatus..I'm in regular contact with several of the Clinton volunteers.
Most of them are very conflicted. Most were going to write in Hillary when it was thought that Oregon was a sure Blue state...but McCain is gaining here and in Washington state.
I can speak only for myself. If Oregon appears close I will probably vote for Biden with Obama along for the ride. If it is a sure Blue victory here, I will write in Hillary.
As I am typing this message, CNN showed again part of Hillary's discussion of the economy with Diane Sawyer this morning.
One reaction that is seldom discussed in the media, is that the more we see Hillary, the angrier her supporters get at the stupid selection of a lightweight like Obama who makes what should be a victory, very precarious.
The volunteers I know haqve stopped any donations to the DNC and the other Obama flacks.

Re: Discussion above about ourselves. For the record, I view the comments section of this blog as an organism that shifts shapes according to primal laws of nature. I don’t get involved in any offsite efforts to shape discussion, or direct who comes or who goes. Whatever I’ve got to say, I say it right here. I do prefer reasonably civil dialogue, and think I’ve made that quite clear many times. Beyond that, my only job is to create the daily columns and videos that I am paid to do. I am not paid to monitor or direct the comments section. But I do stay involved because I enjoy the vigorous debates and sense of community we’ve created. When the comments section descends into mindless chaos or childish tantrums, I am sorry about it, but I keep doing my job, hopeful that, as always seems to happen, soon we will shift shapes again and the comments will be worth reading.

"McCain" is running an inept campaign, the economy is in the toilet, to say nothing else of the last 8 years of utter incompetence of the same brand. If the "Obama" can't win this election, they just need to dissolve the Democratic party and start from scratch, or concede on a wedge issue like abortion.

After we past them, Doc asked, "did he say he was sad about not going to school?, kind of chuckling ... I told him at that age alot of kids love school .. my daughter was the same , it was college that made her hate it ...

Question - in fact I have called my Congress People as I am Irate.
What right does the Federal Government have to block health care and Patient information on my 15 year old daughter from me? This is BS - and well known among this age group.
Why build a system that strips parents rights? I am responsible for her? Both as a parent for all matters, and besides who is paying the bill? Is the Fed going to take that over?
This is such BS and I want to make it an explosive issue as it is core to a values system that is so wrong and harmful to our country

Rezdog, Yes and she signed a release so we have access, But for some this system created by the PC Federal Government has created a dark hole for children to hide from the parents and keep parents from doing the right thing.
This must change - this is no business of any law to take away a parents rights and more importantly RESPONSIBILITY.

That is something I don't like either. I would would want to know. But the government is not able to make exceptions at this point. And that is Incest. I would want anychild to go and take care of a problem like that if they couldn't go to the authorities.
I personally know a woman who fought her father and finally had him put away for incest. By the time she had taken care of him, other family members had been raped and children taken from their mothers and it was a mess because her husband left her too.
She had an abortion. These children are really screwed up in the head and in their heart. its a mess. So, when I say the govenement is not able to make exceptions, its because of these children.
Posted by: Chef Sheila | September 16, 2008 11:14 PM

I will come back in a few weeks with more comments after I speak with Dem Bill Nelsons office and Mel Martinez. -- also a littl study to correlate possible impacts.

Obama proposes a tax plan that will cut taxes for 95% of Americans.
GOP logic - Obama voted in the past for a tax increase - so he will raise taxes if elected.
Under that logic - John McCain voted for the Iraq War - so he will start dumb wars if elected.
Increased taxes for the rich - or more wars....you decide.

Obama has basically proved that he doesn't get the problem..
He offers a laundrylist of special interest tax breaks and pay offs. He then calls it economic policy.
We are having a crises of faith in our economic system.
Capital and money are now moble and they move quickly out of places that are deemed dangerous. No amount of money from the federal treasury can overcome this out flow.
We are a credit using nation, the smart use of credit is what keeps us ahead. With out it we can't survive as the nation we want to be.
The first thing we need to do is assure the world that Americans pay their debt. If this crises continues we will lose our good reputation. and our credit rating

Why Obama's plan to tax the rich makes sense:
We need to pay down the deficit and we are still fighting two wars. So increasing taxes is not about redistribution of wealth - it is about real need.
By increasing taxes on the rich - we can decrease the burden on the lower and middle class. The lower and middle class is strapped. And when they fall on tough times - they start not paying bills - e.g., rise in foreclosures. The pain trickles up.
When you increase taxes 2-3% on the super rich - they still purchase $600 Jimmy Choos and blow cash on cocaine and hookers.
Also - when I was working in NYC over the past 5 years - salaries for many of those that would be affected by Obama's tax cuts rose by way more than 2-3%. The same cannot be said for most lower and middle class jobs - assuming they still exist.

when ever I whined about them doing it, my son & daughter would tell me to shut up!! tell me I'm not a burden, I'm their Mom ... it's also brought us a lot closer ... we don't ever hang up the phone until we say "love you" & they always give me lots of hugs ... which we all know that's helps to lift your spirits so much ...

Obama doesn't get the problem?
If we need to pay our debt - why does McCain now support the Bush tax cuts - that he once rightly opposed.
The Bush tax cuts were and are stupid. But the GOP mantra of: "I will not raise taxes" - prevents the "Maverick" from doing the right thing.

Speaking of GOP's policies that have gotten us into the current mess...
"Was Jimmy Carter Right?" (from 2005)
"Carter faced a crisis from a combination of economic problems, failed policies of his predecessors and, finally, an Iranian revolution that cut access to some Middle Eastern oil.
Carter met the problems by starting sweeping oil-reduction reforms, including creation of the Cabinet-level Department of Energy.
He began spending millions of dollars researching alternative sources for electrical power, including solar power. He got utilities to cut their use of oil for electricity and ramp up their use of natural gas or coal.
"Up until Carter, we were getting about 20 percent of our electricity from oil generation," said Jay Hakes, director of the Energy Information Administration under Carter and an authority on modern presidents and oil. "And post-Carter, it went down to about 3 percent."
Carter insisted that U.S. automakers build more fuel-efficient cars, with a goal of 27.5 miles per gallon over the following decade - a requirement passed under Gerald Ford but put into force by Carter.
He offered incentives for getting oil from shale, creating a boom initially in the Rockies - and a bust when it failed to be cost-effective. He offered deductions for using solar water heaters in homes and commercial buildings.
. . .
Then Carter lost re-election to Ronald Reagan in 1980. The solar panels at the White House eventually came down - and Reagan and his aides gutted the solar research program."

Sheila: Ike turned N'East and , for us, combined with a storm cell that moved over from Illinois, and we had light winds and a lot of rain for three days, lots of flooding in the flood plains but we are never affected by that where we live.
Chicago set a record Saturday at O'Hare with some ridiculous total of like 6.18 inches of rain in one day...whatever it was, it blew away the old record easily.
Galveston's beach areas are a toxic, fish-killing stew of poison and destruction...it's awful.
Yes, it's me...after a power outage during a computer session fried my computer, I had to get the disks out and re-install ack tofactory settings, and TypeKey gave me more problems than anything in the re-installation process...would NOT let me call myself "Dexter" any longer so I used "DexterJohnson", a name I use elsewhere...I call everybody "Johnson"...it started when LBJ was POTUS and I was a kid going door-to-door "gettin' out the vote" with an LBJ pin on my chest.

What happened to Carters energy plan was that supply and demand worked. The high oil prices of the 70's created a boom in the oil patch of t
Texas and Wyoming with a lot of new drilling. I knew several people that let town to work in the oil fields. It also promoted drilling around the world. By the late eighties oil had been cut in half or lower. In 79 I was paying around 2 dollars a gallon by 89 it was down th $0.70 a gallon.
It will happen again but there are fewer places not explored and they are mostly in unfriendly hands.
why do I say this. It is because of a fact I read awhile back all of the deep sea drilling platforms are booked for the next 5 years. That means drilling and exploration is in full swing.

But I am sure a lot of people thought Jimmy Carter was living in the land of make believe when he brought up these crazy ideas like alternative energy and getting off our dependence on foreign oil...
And I sure as heck wish he was able to drag enough other people in there with him to actually do something 30 years ago.
Posted by: warren
| September 17, 2008 1:03 AM
Fair point Jack.
But I think in the new information age - demand can be influenced by factors other than price.
We need to "market" alternative energy. Make windmills and solar panels "cool" - and rich people will start buying them. And as they become more common - the price will go down.
Also, I get the whole supply and demand argument - but I think a Government's role is to step in with legislation where normal market forces will run counter to long-term goals.

You are talking about taxes. who gets what is important to individual and groups but over all we are part of the same pot. neither party is going too far in out on a limb.
In the ninties we saw a change in our credit markets. They became international. In some ways that is good for the world. It allows unpresedented growth to occur in may nations that had been written off as beyond help in the 70's
This is now a fact of life. Capital goes where it gets the best return for it's risk. It is not just some big corporation. who engage in capital flight each of us who have an over seas fund are doing it too.
And it is all done at the click of a mouse.
If we no longer look like a safe place to put our money then we no longer have access to easy money.
It will affect you in your personal loans, me in my business loans, Small and large businesses that want to expand. then we will see a stagnation that no amount of tax breaks or free givaways from uncle sam will cure.

I agree Jack. And in that respect - I think there is a tangible value in the "hope" and "inspiration" of Obama's rhetoric.
I don't think the excitement in Europe and elsewhere is based on the idea that Obama will run this Country into the ground.
It is based on the notion that Obama will turn the page on Bush.
To a certain degree - I agree with those that say the actual policies under either an Obama or McCain administration will not be as drastically as they seem on the campaign trail. And so it is the intangible qualities of an Obama administration that appeal to me.
A surge in public service, a new generation activated and energized by politics, and an immediate shot in the arm to our reputation and credibility around the world.

Wrong on just about every account, xrep, but I'm glad you got a kick out of it. I'm certainly not Max; he was a lot smarter than I and quite frankly made much more relevant and substantiated posts than I ever have, but he didn't agree with the mob and was run off accordingly. He was also more cordial than I, now that I think of it.
I don't support McCain or Bush, and am as disgusted if not more than anyone else regarding the catastrophic Bush Administration. I've said so numerous times. As you are an ideologue, I know you would prefer to categorize everyone who doesn't agree with you a "Republican". Whatever works for you; doesn't make it true.
I certainly don't feel I was made a fool, quite the opposite, but I suppose that's subjective and I'm biased. Some people like to gang up on others, I suppose because they feel they are fighting the good fight and must win at any cost, integrity be damned. If they want to gang up on me, fine; I'm game. I can be pretty brutal and I don't mince words; duplicity has never been my strong suit.
I don't change my name, either. I stand by my words, assume culpability and apologize for them when warranted. "champ" is anonymous enough.
Moot points all, as I'm gone. It took me a while, but I've finally figured out how this place works. You win. Obama will win. You'll have your utopia soon, and then you can start throwing dissidents in jail. Have fun with that.

Nancy Pfotenhauer is McCain's spokesperson. Her last name is so unique I wondered if she was related to this guy I once knew from the Oregon delegation -- Kurt Pfotenhauer. Gotta be -- I never met Kurt's wife, but I remembered she was something of a GOP operative herself. Hmmm..I wonder what Kurt is up to these days....
Wouldn't you know that he was the top lobbyist for the Mortgage Bankers!
DC Power Couples.......
Kurt Pfotenhauer senior vice president, Mortgage Bankers Association
Nancy Pfotenhauer conservative activist
He's a former chief of staff to Sen. Gordon Smith (R-Ore.). At the age of 24, she served on President George H. W. Bush's transition team, and was appointed by the current president as a delegate to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She is a director emerita of the Independent Women's Forum, an antifeminist organization funded by conservative philanthropist Richard Mellon Scaife. In 2004, Washingtonian magazine named her one of the city's most important conservative leaders.
More on dirty Nancy....Who has tried very hard to bury her long-time affiliation with the notorious Koch Industries

Scarlett had good sense enough to collaborate with the nasty bluecoats and saved Tara.......ours in Merriwether County Ga. became truly gone with the wind.....except for the cemetary........

Scarlett didn't collaborate with Yankees -- she was in Atlanta visiting Aunti PittyPat and birthin' Melanie's baby.
The Yankees used Tara as a headquarters and pretty much tore it up. They just didn't burn it down when they left, like they did to Ashely's Twelve Oaks.

xrep - for the first time I have to disagree with you. I know Champ has been sharp and sarcastic and abstruse - but he has been honest as to his feelings. His manner of speech has been no more forceful than several others you do not single out. I understand your reaction to some of Champ's postings but wish you would find the same faults in those others who are equally 'guilty'.
Boy, does that sound stuffy. I really mean it, xrep - I agree with you on just about everything but the same
"problem" lies with more than a few here. I have to stick up for Champ's right to be as irritating as anyone else.
Champ - I know you will understand my point. (right?)

Scarlett marries Rhett and finds marriage to him surprisingly pleasant. Other than refusing to help Ashley Wilkes, Rhett completely spoils her. Scarlett begins spending time with the newly rich Yankees, who are portrayed as having few if any scruples. Scarlett builds a mansion and spends money lavishly. The Old Guard decide to cut Scarlett and Rhett out of society for keeping company with Yankees and flaunting their wealth.
well, a fine point, but she saved Tara before this time I guess......

champ - I just read the previous posts. Don't you dare leave - that's the easy way out. You've had a lot of positive comments from the rest of the people here so you have to know that many agree with you much of the time. Being strafed by one person or several doesn't mean much in the long run.
Heck, I don't agree with much of what you post, but I can see that you're trying to work thru the info you get everyday from the media and the other posts you read everyday because you want to know what you believe in the middle of the chaos. I wish every body thought about their beliefs as carefully as you do. You're honest about it and not hidebound and not tied to any allegiance other than your own beliefs. Keep on truckin'. So sayeth the old lady.

Sturge -- That part came after the WAR and after she devoured a dirt-laden root vegetable in the barren fields of Tara, cursing the Yankees and vowing "As God is my witness, as God is my witness they're not going to lick me. I'm going to live through this and when it's all over, I'll never be hungry again. No, nor any of my folk. If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill. As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again. "

alicia......right.....that's what I meant when I said she had already saved tara before this alleged fraternization with the yankers......ie she didnt save tara by collaboration but by marrying frank.......
Posted by: sturgeone | September 17, 2008 7:04 AM
Sturge -- Right. She saved Tara from the carpetbagging tax assessors by marrying Frank so she could pay them off. This was after she had a visit with Rhett in the horse jail and found out he couldn't access his money.

These economic issues pose a real dilemma for me. While Obama knows nothing about any issues except what his 1960s elders want him to know (i.e., class warfare and welfare empowerment), McCain's head-in-the-sand attitude about the economy just about makes it impossible for me to vote for him as well. As a Texan, I know Phil Gramm has the soul of prison guard and a heart of coal. Putting these two in charge of the economy would be every bit as disastrous as putting Obama in charge, only for different reasons. Ron Paul understands the problems to a point, but his solutions are stuck in the 19th century.
