John McCain is on the road to losing this presidential campaign unless his running mate, Sarah Palin, saves the day for him in Thursday night's debate. The past couple of weeks could not have been worse for the Republican nominee, meaning that he needs the Palin mojo to bring him back.
About the only thing working in McCain's advantage is the buyer's remorse that voters are demonstrating to pollsters these past few weeks. Whenever someone gets out front, survey respondents back off.
Thus, the timing is good for Palin's debate against her counterpart, Joe Biden. Democratic nominee Barack Obama is riding high in the polls, which means that if he hasn't closed the deal then voters are ready to take another look at the GOP ticket.

If I were in charge of Palin Pgymalion it I would highlight her lack of familiarity with Washington even more. Point out she has no stake in the old fights, issues and failures that make up the beltway baloney.
Whatever the issue - Palin's response should be couched in her approach to problem solving. How she looks at something, who she might turn to and how she would set priorities.
McCain has said she will be working on government reform, Palin should have a good response about what that means..

LA Times today:
Palin’s former aides say under the lipstick is a real pit bull
subhead: Going into Thursday’s vice presidential debate, Sarah Palin’s former aides and Alaskan political rivals recall the candidate’s jab-with-a-smile skillfulness and warn not to underestimate her.
…”During Palin’s brief exposure to the high-stakes environment of political debates, she has unnerved both her handlers and her opponents. At times she has been handicapped by her lax approach to learning the nuances of policy and state issues, but she has also projected a Reaganesque ability to offer up pithy answers and charm on camera.
“The political landscape here is littered with people who have underestimated Sarah Palin,” said Eric Croft, a former state representative who ran for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2006 and appeared with Palin during several early forums. …
… Biden could face trouble, Alaskan political observers said, if he takes Palin too lightly. But he also has to take care not to be overly aggressive against a candidate who radiates telegenic appeal.”

A lot of pr firms now have a division called perception management. Pms are not spin doctors because don't spin facts. They CREATE facts and then spin them to the world as truth. That to quote the venerable MarK twain is the diffference between lightning bugs and lighting.
So this perception management could create a man couldn't it? No facts behind the man, no experience, nothing to the man except the perceived ideas manufactured by the perception management firms.
Wow, almost sounds familiar doesn't it. Sure is great what new technology comes up with. Create facts and then give them to the world as truth, when in fact it is the same smelly odor it was to begin with.

Here is an interesting point of view on the bailout. Link below.
Commentary: Bankruptcy, not bailout, is the right answer
* Jeffrey Miron: Government encouraged lenders to relax their standards
* Mortgages were given to people unqualified to repay them, he says
* Miron: Rather than a bailout, government should let firms go bankrupt
* Talk of economic Armageddon is scare-mongering, Miron says
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/29/miron.bailout/index.html
It did not go without notice that both New Hampshire's freshmen congressional democrats voted against the bailout. I guess they want to get re-elected.

Even if that were true, you can't fake intelligence, speaking ability, command of issues, and ability to inspire others.
I can fault Obama for lack of experience and not being open enough or being a little snarky etc., but he is definitely growing into the role of President and should do find.
That's better than someone who isn't particularly bright, is more than a little over the hill, and is backed up by a totally unqualified neophyte.

Nanny,
I use Jonathan or Winesap apples
8 lbs apples
2 cups cider
2 cups vinegar
2-1/4 cups white sugar
2-1/4 cups packed brown sugar
2 tbsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp ground cloves
Yield: About 8 to 9 pints
Procedure: Wash, remove stems, quarter and core fruit. Cook slowly in cider and vinegar until soft. Press fruit through a colander, food mill, or strainer.
Cook fruit pulp with sugar and spices, stirring frequently. To test for doneness, remove a spoonful and hold it away from steam for 2 minutes. It is done if the butter remains mounded on the spoon.
Fill hot into sterile half-pint or pint jars, leaving 1/4-inch headspace. Process in hot pack for about 10 minutes

How does being the Gov of Alaska help with dealing with Russia?
Glad you asked.
Response
Certainly a valid question and concern – and should be asked of all. Without a doubt I have a lot to learn regarding specifics. As Gov I have not had the access to different levels of National Intelligence as the 3 Senators running.
And certainly only John McCain and Joe Biden have the time in office.
Being the VP to John McCain will bring the opportunity and this will be a priority. Much as Freshman Sen Obama has been tracking and learning to close his gap, so will I. The difference is on the Republican Ticket the senior most experienced person is in the seat of the President.
Be assured that I will close the gap, Be assured that I also have a personal family stake as does John McCain in the decisions that are made in relation to our National Security.
And in the Matter of National Security the issues related to Energy independence are not new to me.
We are fortunate to have a strong experienced leader such as John McCain as the Presidential nominee for the Republican ticket.

I also think it is interesting to watch McCain try to hammer Obama on lack of experience in Friday's debate and then try to defend Palin's experience in his recent interviews.
It is a tough sell he is trying to pull off. It was not as apparent after the RNC - because the McCain campaign dropped the whole "not ready to lead" thing and tried to co-opt the change message.

Obama has a huge advantage based on the fact that he has been on the campaign trail for 19 months and particpated in more than 20 debates - and held his own - with Foreign Policy experts.
Obama has been strong on issues of National Security and Foreign Policy - and Palin has been weak.

-Clinton is the best politically

-Obama has the most intelligence and has shown the best vision and judgment.
(Obama also has a potential to have a level of credibility on the world stage - that cannot be matched by someone who voted for the Iraq War.)

No I will not admit the surge is working and the Iraq People are better off - If elected I will exit ASAP.
If we leave I will come back?

I am so sorry that the unsophisticated, easily manipulated voters will actually be allowed to vote. Despite all the misinformation thrown about in the media. Obama was actually to the right of Clinton on this issue.
Go back and check for yourself - but during the last couple of months. Clinton took the position that she would begin withdrawal in 60 days "no matter what" the generals on the ground said.
Obama did not give in - and stuck to his position that withdrawal would be done responsibly over the course of 18 months.

To tell ya the truth - I think McCain's and Obama's position on Iraq is actually getting much closer than the political banter seems.
But I think setting a deadline will give some potential for the Iraqi government to make some political progress. Remember that to many Iraqis - this is an American "occupation". And many Iraqis won't support their own leaders if they appear to be cow-towing to Washington.
I also think a deadline will get spur the Iraqi millitary to action in getting ready to take over. (I know with most things - nothing happens till a deadline is set - it is human nature).
And guess what - under Obama's careful plan - if violence gets out of control we can stop pulling out brigades.
But we will never know what will happen until we start. And there are plenty of good reasons to start this process and end the status quo.

OMG - Someone get this woman a subscription to WaPo and the NY Times ...
Couric: And when it comes to establishing your worldview, I was curious, what newspapers and magazines did you regularly read before you were tapped for this to stay informed and to understand the world?
Palin: I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media.
Couric: What, specifically?
Palin: Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years.
Couric: Can you name a few?
Palin: I have a vast variety of sources where we get our news, too. Alaska isn't a foreign country, where it's kind of suggested, "Wow, how could you keep in touch with what the rest of Washington, D.C., may be thinking when you live up there in Alaska?" Believe me, Alaska is like a microcosm of America.

A study conducted by UCLA's Department of Psychiatry has revealed that
the kind of face a woman finds attractive on a man can differ depending on
where she is in her menstrual cycle.
For example: If she is ovulating, she is attracted to men with rugged
and masculine features. However, if she is menstruating, or menopausal,
she tends to be more attracted to a man with duct tape over his mouth and
a spear lodged in his chest while he is on fire.
No further studies are expected.

It is the new politics. You don't debate positions. you sneer , call names, belittle, and demonize the opposition. Not everybody but too many yield to the temptation.

Keep it up, a good part of the population of the US consider themselves hicks and rubes and just love to be looked down upon by the well educated, conceited, sophisticated marvels from the big cities and universities. They work hard, drive old pick up trucks, marry their first cousins (just kidding), pay child support, are honest...and don't spend all day and night on political blogs.
Those are the people that Obama needs to seal the deal. Will he? Time will tell. But insulting them is not the way to their hearts. If you don't think so, rent the movie Deliverance, it's a classic.

Unlike Senator Clinton, Joe Biden was given a pass by msm ,Biden claimed he was "shot at" in iraq 2005.
One of his other gaffes , he intimated that his helicopter went down in Afghanistan due to attack, when in reality it went down because of a snow storm.
The msm and this blog as well has castigated Sarah Palin for everyhing from her hairstyle, clothes, shoes,
her family, her every word, you name it. Why should Biden be given a pass for his numerous misstatements.

I was listening to Susan Estrich the other day on KCUR. She was telling about the Bensen /Quail debate. Her point is no matter how great a victory a VP scores(and Bensen did.) Nobody votes for the VP.
So enjoy it, look at the future of women in politics. But it is not the main show. The economy has taken the limelight from everybody.

1. I never head either of those statements.
2. I vaguely remember someone Senators making a forced landing in Afghanistan a couple of years ago and even if a fart freaked out the pilot and cause him to land quick...I'd feel like I was shot at.
3. If you can offer a redeeming quality, like useful knowledge on a meaningful topic, decent personality, you get a pass.
It's not just Biden...everyone admits Cheney is a douchebag but he got a pass for so long because the press either liked him or were scared shitless by him...
Lastly, if you come out right away and say the press is mean or unfair, they tend not to cut you slack. If you pissed off your neighbors enough, don't expect them to stop the guy robbing your house when you aren't home.

Change Equals:
-Change from the failed policies of the last 8 years. Most importantly with respect to Foreign Policy. Obama represents a "clean break" from Bush.
-A surge in public service by parlaying the energy of grassroots movement started by Obama's campaign into cvic duty
-A decrease in the partisan nonsense. I am talking about a slight move in the right direction - not a total elimination of partisan politics which I acknowledge is imposiible.
Obama is the only candidate that has been called out for not attacking his opponents hard enough. He has also been mocked for expressing agreement with Clinton and McCain in major debates. Once we move past the heat of the campaign - I think there is a real chance for improvement.

Jack,
Some attribute bank liquidity issues to a couple of factors...
1. Small Businesses are fearful of keeping more than $100K in a bank because were the bank to fail they would be s.o.l. many medium size companies may need that on hand to manage payroll and accounts payable etc.
2. With people withdrawing funds from banks, it reduces their assets and cash on hand and it can force them to borrow to maintain the authorized amount. If they are unable to borrow from other banks, that creates issues as well.
3. It further reinforces to people that their money is safe and makes them less likely to panic. My girlfriend heard a rumor about Bank of America and I told her she didn't need to take her money out of there. She lived in Rhode Island so she remembers the DEPCO credit union failure which cost her parents a lot of money they never recovered.

The problem is that everything is a big deal when you introduce a VP candidate to the Country with only 60 days until the election.
There is stuff in Biden's closet - and McCain's closet (like Keating 5) - that doesn't get as much attention because (1) it has been covered in the past, and (2) there is a long record of other things to talk about.
And the same thing is done to Obama by the Right Wing media with respect to his associations, his patriotism, etc. Just turn on talk radio at any point during the day....

Obama's neighborhood,
I have been working a cpl. of blocks from the Obama/Rezko house, for a couple that both doctors. Mr. Doctor is still pissed abut Sen. Clinton not representing the Dem's for POTUS. He thinks that he should have waited. Thinks that he doesn't have the experience to see the country through the mess we are in.He will vote for Obama or just sit it out, he will make up his mind when he goes in to vote on the same day.
Mrs Doctor loves O, and is fanatical about him. She showed me the back packs that her 5 and 6 year old take to school with three Obama metal signs pinned on each, she asked me what I thought about them---she didn't like my answer, told her that it looked like it weighed them down. I should have told her that children should not be influenced by parents at such a young age. (that goes for religion too).
Her cook told me that she was afraid Obama would be killed before he finished his term, but he had better win, if he didn't, it would be long long time before another black would get to get this far. These are some thoughts from black people, I hope that the Doctors lack of enthusiasm for O does not make it racial t anyone here.
Chloe, Rita, Toast,Champ, and others, I see that you haven't learnt how to tag team, as well as the others. Since when does seniority count on a blog? when she get tired, the flying nun will come to police the neighborhood and show Craig that she really really cares, while the point man is shooting at you, and using Jamie as cover. I won't post much cause I don't think I contribute that much, but along with the 5,500 lurkers know the truth, if you can;t ignore them kill them with kindness----yes sir, no sir, yes mommy, no mommy, and the go ahead and give us al that great conversation that you all can.

The Obama camp really needs to tie down McCain in Ohio, even if Obama can't take the state he needs to make McCain fight for ever vote in the state:
"McCain leads by 17 points among those who earn more than $50,000 a year. Obama leads by 21 points among those who earn less than $50,000 a year. McCain leads 5:4 in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Toledo. Obama leads 5:4 in greater Cleveland. McCain and Obama are effectively tied in Dayton. McCain leads by 12 points among whites; Obama leads by 69 points among blacks. 65% of likely voters say the next president should focus on the economy ahead of all other issues: among that group, Obama leads 5:4. 9 of 10 Republicans vote for McCain; 8 of 10 Democrats vote for Obama; independents are tied. Among men, McCain today leads by 5 points, down from 13 points two weeks ago; among women, Obama today leads by 2, down slightly from 4 points two weeks ago. Among voters who are younger than Barack Obama, Obama and McCain were and are tied. Among voters older than John McCain, McCain had led by 10; now, Obama and McCain tie among these voters. Among voters who are in-between the two candidates' ages, McCain had led by 10, now leads by 2."

A BOA rumor,
that explains the crowd my wife encountered at the midtown bank this afternoon. She went out to a suburban bank and nobody was there.
I can see where raising the limit could calm some jitters and might make for a small movement out of the market into banks. It was my understanding that the problem was mortgage firms and banks can't borrow money against their assets to have more money to loan. This problem is , as I understand it way beyond getting a few more people to deposit money. It involves the large institutional money lender,(insurance companies , pension funds etc.) having confidence in the system so they can turn loose of their money.

Dex,
when you are a mother with children, a demanding job, a house to run. You rarely have time to read. Then it is usually something at the beauty salon, the dr office, dentist, etc. Or I do suspect the governors office reception area has magazines. Probably a nice supply, and a person tends to pick up the one that has the front cover that is most interesting. Not particularly one for the name. If she named one over the other then she would be said to be partisan.. she was trying to be fair, not stupid....

Jack,
While an understandable concern, banks are not only not making risky loans, they aren't making loans to other banks, or even their best business clients.
There was a story earlier today that some McDonald's franchisee's were having a hard time getting financing from banks.
To put it in perspective, the only McDonald's I have ever known to close in the US were the results of major storm damage or due to mass shootings.
I am hearing a lot of businesses in the Fort Worth area facing similar difficulties and it seems if this isn't fixed this weekend, things will seize up on Monday.
A way to put this in perspective is that you can run an engine for some miles without having any oil in it. You go long enough, it just over heats, seizes up and you aren't going anywhere...If you add oil before it's too late, you'll keep going but maybe not as well until you do a proper tuneup. The legislation is the adding of the oil. Whomever the new president is will do the tune up when they are in office.

I am quite sure you have no inkling to what it is to be a working mother with children to raise. SInce you have never had any. Even if someone else is hired, those children need prime time with Mom, events to attend. School conferences, things that a hired person cannot accomplish. A governor's job cannot be a simple 9-5 job either. Her accomplishments are to be admired. Not scorned by men that have no earthly idea what it is all about and just think she is stupid. I would venture to say that neither you nor Dex could ever do what she had accomplished.. Then again , not issues, just generally - she is bad at everything..

Well Powerpuff Girl actually answered a question in a good way (for a fundie):
And on gays, Governor Palin said: “But what you’re talking about, I think, value here, what my position is on homosexuality and you can pray it away, because I think that was the title that was listed on that bulletin. And you know, I don’t know what prayers are worthy of being prayed. I don’t know what prayers are going to be asked and answered. But as for homosexuality, I am not going to judge Americans and the decisions that they make in their adult personal relationships. I have one of my absolute best friends for the last 30 years happens to be gay, and I love her dearly. And she is not my “gay friend,” she is one of my best friends, who happens to have made a choice that isn’t a choice I would have made. But I am not going to judge people.”
One little postscript: It’s been pretty apparent throughout this last week that Ms. Couric has managed to elicit, through quite interesting questions, what Ms. Palin believes. Like no other journalist before the debate on Thursday night.
