Instead of attacking Palin directly - I think the Dems should attack the credibility of the GOP's campaign tactics. (McCain did not look good defending his pick this morning on Fox - even though he maintained a fake smile thoughout and called Palin his "soulmate".)
Republicans are able to turn on a dime. After spending months saying Obama lacked the experience to be President - they have now adopted the themes that Obama has based his campaign on from the start.
To defend Palin - they say judgment is paramount to experience and answer almost every question by repeating the mantra that Palin will bring a change to Washington.
If Obama is so naive and out of touch with America - why did he nail the two things most Americans are seeking from the next President right from the start....
(Kinda like Iraq. Obama opposed the Iraq War at its outset, calling it "an ill-conceived venture which would require a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undermined cost, with undetermined consequences." Call correct.)

Warren----------------------------------
McCain's choice of Palin made the big difference -- the RW and ERW love Sarah. They'll be working and voting for HER. It's not about closing ranks -- it's enthusiasm that didn't exist before. The Repubs will have a united party -- the Dems are divided and will stay that way.
The DNC is going to pay a heavy price for stealing the nomination from Hillary. Just wait until the details from SoetorObama's "hidden" past are revealed to the public. We'll see a political meltdown like you can't even begin to imagine.

McCain asked several people to be VP, they all said no. So he got desperate and made a knee- jerk decision and now he has an un-vetted under qualified person on his ticket.
Can this election get anymore odd.
Then - no one is showing up for the first day of the convention?
What ? is 72 year -old McCain going down to NOLA and holding back the flood water? when everyoneelse has been ordered to leave? this is insanity once again.

Bush and Cheney are sitting around asking each other:

Not if I don't have to.
Well, I'm the president, I make the call.
Well I have better things to do.
But so do I -will you go for me ?
Come on George - Just make something up we don't have to go.

Revenge Voting
"And make no mistake, bypassing Hillary for the conventional Biden was a political blunder of Titanic proportions. First, of course, it further alienated Hillary supporters. Second, it made McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin that much more damaging to Obama. On the Left, it gives Hillary supporters the opportunity, in good conscience, to exact revenge on Obama and the DNC by actually pulling the lever for McCain.
Hillary was Obama’s last chance to bring many of her supporters into the fold.
Obama’s narcissistic drive for power unleashed a politics so ugly that millions of committed progressives are seriously considering voting for his opponent. Palin is McCain’s love letter to Hillary’s supporters. Revenge is a bitch, baby."

GORDO:
Are you an operative paid by the GOP to stir up discontent between the Obama and Clinton supporters?
I think it is becoming very clear to Hillary Clinton supporters still sitting on the fence that the GOP is doing all it can to manipulate them - rather than show them respect.
Clinton supporters - remember all of the GOP attacks made against Hillary over the last 16 years. Do you really think Obama is a sexist in comparison? Do you think a sexist could have married Michelle Obama?

Posted by: champ | September 1, 2008 1:22 AM
Now I have posted my reasons why I think Clinton would have been a good pick for VP. But here is what the GOP would have done if Obama did pick her:
1. Use Clinton-hatred to rile up the base. That would have allowed McCain to double-down on experience and pick someone like Ridge or Romney. Instead - he was forced to pick Palin with all of the downside and risks that have been discussed.
2. Would have totally denigrated Hillary's "experience".
3. Would have used the sound byte that have another Clinton in the White House to continue the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton cycle is not change. A stupid argument - but may have had some rhetorical effect on less-informed voters. In addition, the more despicable members of the GOP would have argued that a black man and a woman on a ticket is too much change...
4. Would re-raise the Bill Clinton running around the White House with nothing to do = drama. Again a stupid argument - but the GOP would be this dead horse and make some people forget that Bill could actually be a huge asset.
5. Most significantly, would have argued Obama was weak claiming that choosing a VP is the most important decision a nominee makes - and Obama made his choice out of fear and weakness.
Instead, we have McCain making his VP choice out of weakness, without proper vetting - and Obama making a choice that is respected by most fair-minded observers - including plenty of Clinton supporters.

Am finally starting to enjoy the GE.
Worried that there is no bounce from the speech he (BO) made.... I smell trouble in paradise
OD, I am with you. I was considdering voting for BO after the super super trashy 18million cracks in the ceiling reference that Sarah P made on saturday: I was insulted!
Anyway, I am still not voting. But I am keeping an ear to the convention from the GOP...If they insult me again, I may vote.....
One thing I am happy with is that fact that now that I am an independent I truly give an ear to everyone. I can listen to anyone and just make a decission. I have to say, I followed the dems blindly since I was able to vote, based more on the tradition at home. So....that is good news.
Had a hugh argument with a friend of mine over the weekend about McCain....he plans on voting for the guy after watching him on the TV.....

Posted by: Jason | September 1, 2008 2:43 AM
Jason:
I am not looking at McCain soley on the fact that his a Republican either.
-I am looking at the fact that McCain wants to continue the Bush tax cuts when we are fighting two wars - and the deficit is getting out of control.
(btw, the rising deficit weakens the dollar which drives up the price of a barrel of oil - since it is pegged to the dollar.)
-He also has resisted ending the war in Iraq - even though the Iraqi govt and even the Bush administration is starting to work out a time-table.
-He has made irresponsible comments re: two of the major powers the next administration will have to deal with: 1) Bomb bomb bomb Iran 2) Putin is KGB. McCain is openly hostile to those Countries and will provide little chance for a diplomatic sollution.
-Since an honorable campaign was not working - he hired Rove's operatives to start making personal attacks on Obama to distract voters from the issues. And recently, he has cast the central themes of his campaign aside - and has adopted themes that Obama has relied on from the outset: Change and Judgment.
(Both candidates are Senators - so this campaign is really where we get to see their executive skills. Obama had the insight to see what voters were looking for right from the start. And he has also been able to build a grassroots campaign that has shattered all records of the old school establishment campaigns. Advantage = Obama.)
-I don't think enough can be said about Obama's ability to mobilize a huge number of Americans - many of whom had no involvement in politics before - through his inspirational speeches. Words matter. Especially when they are combined with Obama's impressive organizational talents in order to turn hope into action.
With Obama - we get a new generation of energized Americans - willing to participate in civic service - in addition to the many already involved. I think we could see a real "surge" in public service if Obama is elected.
-And yes - I would be proud - as an American - to elect the first President of a major Western nation that is not white. To me - this powerful symbolic moment in history will be much more effective than the barrel of a gun in our fight to spread Democracy throughout the world.

Any, rational meaning I can do something with, I will take in. At least two points within your opinion I fully support.
But one more thing: Why do we constantly focus on colour? I mean...I am a very proud American from African descent...But I am american first and foremost. I would like it if an AA was elected as POTUS, but I am not dwelling in the bask of this man. He is a very good orator, but he has many flaws which are certianly never questioned. And that angers me.
Why ? because he is an AA and nobody wants to anger the AA community...FUCK THAT!
If BO fucks up (which I think he will) we as AA´s will be hounded by that debacle for centuries. It will be said: You had your chance and you blew it.
We all know how BO used his race to his advantage, and is still doing. I am saddend by that.
But the again, that is one negative....Maybe JmC has more :-)

I can certainly understand and accept the position of those that do not see race as a reason to vote FOR Obama.
Although I am saddened and frustrated to hear anecdotes of those who take the position that race is a reason to vote AGAINST Obama. (Unfortunately I have heard a few such stories.)
I did not come to support Obama because he is African-American. But I do think - since he would be the first - Obama's election would be a significant moment in American history and a necessary step in the right direction towards a future where race and gender are no longer issues.
But regardless of what occurs during Obama's administration - anyone who judges future AA candidates on this basis of what Obama does or does not accomplish - would be acting irrationally.
A white candidate is not destined to be George Washington nor George W. Bush...

Dos anyone remember, John Edwards as a VP choice? There is a presumption and miscalculation that Hillary's 18 Million votes in the primaries consisted of all females. Wrong! I am an African-American Democrat, a Hillary supporter, who believes Obama is insufficiently experienced for the Presidency. I also believe -- confirmed by the reticence of fellow AA's that I ask this type of question -- if you had to chose a CEO of an organization on whom your livelihood and welfare depended, would you choose someone with proven expertise and accomplishment, who had demonstrated the requisite skills of experience and leadership at that level, would you choose a new manager, a rookie, a surgeon or an intern; would you follow a Corporal into battle when a Captain or General is available? Experience. Leadership.

You analogy sounds persuasive on its face - but it misses an important point.
In our situation, we are replacing an outgoing CEO that has ran the corporation into the ground. The proven and experienced CEO that you recommend for the job has made clear during the interview process that he will continue the same business plan of the outgoing CEO. Why do you expect any different results - simply because you like the resume better?
The young and intelligent leader that we have also interviewed has presented a business model that takes the company in a different direction. His business model is almost exactly like the one presented by the candidate you say would be the best for the job - Hillary Clinton.
It is about the policies people!!
(Cheney and Rumsfeld each had resumes comparable to John McCain - and where did that get us. The Republican party created the policies of the last 8 years. Bush was just the inarticulate figurehead that implemented them. Why will anything change if you replace the President - but continue down the same road?!)

Gardener and garden.-- Out of damp and gloomy days, out of solitude, out of loveless words directed at us, conclusions grow up in us like fungus: one morning they are there, we know not how, and they gaze upon us, morose and gray. Woe to the thinker who is not the gardener but only the soil of the plants that grow in him!
FW Nietzsche, from " Daybreak".

"I'm in Orlando, just down the road from Ping Pong and TonyB"
You folks should get together and start the Trail Mix Florida Resource Conservation Chapter. Get the Orlando Crawfords engaged, too.
Seriously, there are active Native Plant Society chapters in all the counties of Central Florida. And, you have the local water districts that also have resources.
When I do it, I'll do it in stages. Like converting the large flower bed in the center of our front yard and then going from there.
In the Orlando area, I don't see where people have much choice about it--irrigation water is simply going to dry up. What little water is left will probably go to ag and tourist interests.

Jason you are correct. There is not a Labor Day in The Netherlands per se. But the reason is that April 30th is Queen's Day, which was the birthday of Queen Juliana. When Beatrix became Queen, she kept the official celebration of her birthday on 30 April because it had become so popular.
"Koninginnedag or "Queen's Day" is a national holiday in the Netherlands, the Netherlands Antilles, and Aruba on 30 April or on 29 April if the 30th is a Sunday. Queen's Day celebrates the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands and is supposed to be a day of national unity and "togetherness" (Dutch: saamhorigheid). The tradition started on 31 August 1885 on the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina, later Queen Wilhelmina. Since 1949, after the ascension of Queen Juliana, Queen's Day is Queen Juliana's birthday on 30 April. Although Queen Beatrix's birthday is on 31 January, she officially celebrates her birthday on 30 April."

It is certainly an interesting day to be stuck in Amsterdam. The partying is unbelievable !!!

Here is a fascinating write up about the history of May Day (aka Labour Day) in Europe. In Belgium we celebrate May Day wherein I usually drive up the 35 kilometers to the southern most province of the Netherlands to do some shopping.

Interesting conversation about xeriscaping. The water agency in Sonoma County has been talking about it for years...but only last year ripped out their own lawn and put in water saving landscaping. In fact, since 1989 they have been giving an award for contributions to xeriscaping.
I am an accidental xeriscaper...I just stopped watering!

What happened to the "Bounce" ?
========================
"Barack Obama didn't get a "bounce" out of the Democratic convention, finding himself statistically tied with John McCain at 49 percent to 48 percent in a CNN/Opinion Research poll conducted Aug. 29-31. The margin of error is 3 percent. The survey covered the period including the day after Obama's acceptance speech and McCain's choice of Sarah Palin. Just before the convention, CNN's poll had the two exactly tied."

OD, I almost fell for the CNN poll as well until I noticed in the top left corner of the screen that the dates of the polls were August 22-23, before the Dem convention. Blitzer must have an agenda! If you look at other more recent polls, the spread for Obama is anywhere from 4-9% points. That’s a big lead this late in the election. Pays to look at the “fine print”.

GORDO, Where it rally counts is the compilation of ALL the polls. Again, read the fine print. CNN has consistently put Obama low in the polls. I still know that what I saw last night said “August 22-23” at the top of the screen. And, CNN wants to “keep it interesting” for coverage.

The Palin "baby" controversy gets curiouser and curiouser. The Republicans still haven't offered an absolute denial that the baby Sarah claims is hers, is not Bristol's. I remember "All The President's Men" where "Ben Bradley" asked if the Nixon spokesperson had said their reporting was untrue, after giving a belligerent response. When they hadn't, he knew he had a story. I think there's a story here.

just received this from McCain campaign:
STATEMENT FROM SARAH AND TODD PALIN
For Immediate Release
Contact: Press Office
Monday, September 1, 2008
ARLINGTON, VA -- Today, Sarah and Todd Palin issued this statement:
"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us. Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.
"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."

Ordinarily I'd just let an old thread die, but Bear's remarks, that I just came across, are so egregious that they have me bouncing off the walls. Here's his remark, posted a couple of days ago, and my answers, that I just posted today not realizing that the thread was stale.
As I said, I'm hotter than a firecracker:
Flatus,
I know his decorations and he is fortunate that his are not disparaged in the same way John Kerry's or even Bob Kerrey's have been.
These guys didn't disparage or diminish McCain's history. They just say they are sick of hearing it. They had friends who were POW's who endured concentration camp living. They had friends who endured the living hell that was the Korean War. They told me that you would never hear someone who fought in one of those wars using the fact that they served as the entire basis for their campaign.
In what was always a telling comment about the rift between Vietnam vets and WWII or Korea vets is that the Nam boys had it easy. They never had to fight in the cold and they didn't have to get shot up in order to get home before the war was done.

Rita,
"My opinion of mo is just that, my opinion, I don't force it on anyone, or expect them to buy into it, and I believe there still is a 1st amendment that guarantees me, my opinion and the freedom to speak it. "
And it is my right to say that if you had said it in my presence I would have said it was a viscious, ugly thing to say about someone you had never met, and said here on the board, it is my opinion that you were viscious and ugly to type those words so I said so.

McCain’s gamble on Palin is shrewd
'.....Mr McCain has taken an extraordinary risk. It was certainly the act of an unorthodox politician. Was it, though, the act of a reckless and stupid one? I think not"
"The instant reaction among Democrats was astonishment. Quickly that gave way to outrage.,,,,,,The prevailing attitude was a hair's breadth from laughter at the bimbo from a state that does not count."
"The point is simple: for this job, character trumps experience, especially Washington experience, every time. Voters know this even if the experts do not."
"Once again, inexperience and good character pay."

Will Reba Mcintyre be singing at the wedding?
Reba's oldest daughter, then high school senior Cheyenne (Joanna García) became pregnant. In the pilot episode, Cheyenne married her baby's father, fellow high-schooler Van Montgomery (Steve Howey), a dim-witted but well-meaning football player. Van moves in with them, as his own parents kicked him out for standing by Cheyenne, and comes to view Reba as a surrogate parent (something Reba is very comfortable with). The show strives to comically but realistically portray the trials and tribulations of family life in modern society.
