While Trail Mix soaks our blistered feet, a look back at our video coverage of the Republicans:
- GOP Sings the Gustav Blues: As Hurricane Gustav pounds the Gulf Coast, Craig talks to delegates from Texas, a state both physically and politically in the eye of the storm. (9/1)
- An Unconventional Convention: Due to a plethora of unexpected distractions, the Republican National Convention is off to a slow start. (9/2)
- McCain's Very Large Screen: Convention sets say a lot about how campaigns try to brand their candidates. (9/3)
- The Race Is On: Video Trail Mix winds up our convention coverage with a visit to Minnesota's Mall of America. (9/4)

I know very little about this, but it is an interesting take.
Russia's role in the Iran crisis
"For its part, Russia is happy with the standoff between Iran and the United States. Not only does it destabilize international oil markets - keeping prices higher than they ought to be - but Iran's large natural gas reserves are effectively off-limits for European use, reinforcing the continent's dependency on Moscow. At the same time, as Iran strengthens its economic links with key Asian powers, it makes it more dependent on Russia and China for its critical trade and investments. Russia can only benefit from Iran's gradual reorientation toward the East."

Are Evangelicals Really Sold on Palin?
Sure, John McCain's selection of Sarah Palin to be his running mate fully consumed a GOP convention that was supposed to be focused on thumping Barack Obama over the head. And it may have raised questions about McCain's own judgment and seriousness. But, as we have been told ad nauseam since the surprise choice was announced last Friday, Palin has already provided one unquestionable, invaluable assist to the Republican campaign: with one sweep of her perfectly manicured hand, she has supposedly erased McCain's Evangelical problem and united the base that proved so key to George W. Bush's victory in 2004.....

"I have been lurking for about a year now and enjoy this site much more than i should,I have always thought that Mr Crawford was an outstanding addition to any news show that he was on. Good afternoon everyone! Looks like I missed the Threadus Interuptus? It's raining a lot here and unfortunately some of it has found its way into my house. Big puddle of water in the laundry room in the basement and a somehow through a basement window than is under the deck. We readjusted some things on the deck and that seemed to stop the waer being directed to the basement window - but it looks like the laundry room puddle will require further investigation/remedy. It's dry now -- the beach towels and dehumidifer are working.
Yay! We have electricity! I am so thankful for everyday blessings.

the term Evangilical has many meanings depending on the bias of the writer, This classification may be the most difficult to define in the election, from polsters to journalist (the few that remain) and the entertainers that occupy most of the MSM and Cable space.
What is an Evangilical? What is a Religous based voter? Where is that line to define right wing?
My conclusion is that these terms are used mostly by the "Left" to try and create a fear and place a label of general proportions on the Republican ticket.

chloe,
Finding someone, anyone who could support his acknowledgment that he used marijuana, and/or cocaine. From all published reports from his HS friends, BHO was not known for his partying, and no one, not even his best friend who has admitted to using drugs in HS. No one. Why is this important you may be asking yourself. My opinions. It was a self calculated risk on his part. BHO assumed if he , a black youth, said no that he never used drugs, his answer would be suspect. A black youth who didn't use or sell drugs, what planet are we on? Of course that view would be of the black youths of today, not the black teenagers on the island of Hawaii in the mid 1960's. So BHO foreseeing the same reply admitted to something I don't believe he ever did, the cocaine part, not the marijuana issue, for the sole purpose of confirming people's beliefs. So since his admission, not 1 person has ever come forward to support any part of his drug use, no one ever used it with him, no one ever saw him used it, and no one ever admitted to selling it to him. BHO only ever so slightly glances over this issue in his book, but the issue, his father abandoning both he and his mother, was the alleged reasons he started using these substances.
Now some will say, who would be stupid to come forward and admit they sold drugs, or use drugs with him. Recall G W Bush and his alleged involvement with cocaine. Not only did you have people coming forward admitting to seeing him use cocaine, there were even some who admitted to selling him drugs. Also something to keep in mind, what would a tabloid like the National Enquirer pay for such a story? "I snorted with the O-man" But not 1 single person ever has substantiated his claims to drug use.

As long as the Mexican government is a criminal enterprise, the US corporations looking for slave labor, the east and west border entries unprotected. It is a god awful mess. The US creates the market for cheap labor and drugs and the supply flows across the borders virtually unchecked.

ET,
On what planet do you live? Do you even have a valid driver's license? Do you own a car, or even drive one? It isn't the "f"ing drivers license that protects anyone if your in an accident, it is something called CAR INSURANCE. What insurance company is going to issue an illegal who has no driving history a insurance policy, and what do you think those premiums would be even if they did? Yes I know, we the legal driver should pick-up their insurance premiums that will be collected through TAXES. No wonder you live outside the US. You don't have a clue of what is going on here in the US. BHO went to Harvard Law. Sad to think a Harvard Law grad doesn't know what protects you when you are involved in an accident. It is not a drivers license.

Here is a simple idea. Take a number and go to the back of the line. You have people from all over the world that come here legally, who work here legally, who drive legally, and the cars they drive meet the minimum insurance coverage of the state the car is registered in. Just because you slip into the US illegally is no excuse for them to further violate additional laws, and then be rewarded.

I'm well aware of what is going on in the skilled labor industries such as construction.
I was thinking more along the line of migrant workers who live in subsistance levels or even almost every single hotel in the nation.
As stated, it is a complicated problem. If the demand weren't there, the illegal workers wouldn't be there. In this case, I think that is the end that needs to be controlled if only because businesses want to stay in business. Ones that follow the law are at a disadvantage against those who don't. Make the ones who don't pay a high enough fine to put their existence in jeopardy and the use of illegals would dry up.
If you use SS numbers as a tracking device, you open up everyone to identity theft. Perhaps demanding a passport for everyone or some sort of new document that can't be forged is the way to go. Unfortunately, Republicans go ballistic when that idea is put forward.

Your SSN is out there for anyone to obtain, as is your unlisted unpublished phone number, where you have lived for the last 20 years, your education, your children etc etc etc. and just about everything and anything you ever submitted on the internet.
Now the reason a lot of this stuff is out is so the dead beat parents, cheats, con artist, rip-off artist, skips, etc can be found. They are yset another reason why taxes are so high. You are paying for father's who are nothing more than sperm donors, then split leaving a mother and child to fend for themselves. Or the person who takes out a loan knowing up front they have no intention of paying back the load, or credit card, or returning the car they defaulted on. Jamie,
If you use SS numbers as a tracking device, you open up everyone to identity theft.
For less than $1.00 any employer can easily verify if the SSN they are present is valid. The number itself tells you where and when it was issued, and there is a numerical way of determining if the number itself is even good. Then ask a few simple questions of the applicant, like where have you lived in the last 5 years, in what state did they obtain the SSN. It is so stupidifying why it is not a common practice of all employers. Just make verification of the application form a condition of employment. You could do it on site in less than 5 minutes, and you would reduce illegal hiring by better than 50%.

The factual part is the litany of owners and political positions with the citations. Do you want be to dig up the actual corporate sales from those links? The Telegraph is a good paper. They do an excellent job of reporting the news, much better than most US papers. When it come to their opinion pieces, you need to know their political position and for The Telegraph that is Tory while the Independent tends to be Liberal Democrat.
For more strictly held balance, try the London Times is still pretty good though with the buyout my Murdoch, that is no longer as dependable.

You are behind the times. The verification system is already going into effect. Supposedly, the companies that agreed to use it would not be subject to ICE raids. Unfortunately, someone forgot to tell ICE and a raid just happened landed all over the news. Until the right hand figures out what the left hand is doing this isn't workable and is really open to fraud and abuse.

Jamie,
"Unfortunately the ones they persecute are the ones who try to do the right thing with exorbitant interest charges."
A friend of mine several years ago located a deadbeat father, on behalf of the mother, who owed $70,000 in back child support. The authorities really didn't want to be bothered in going through all the paper work to have him arrested and extradited back to the respective state. Eventually they did after they were continually hounded, but it was like pulling teeth to get the state to do the right thing for the mother and child.
Speaking of deadbeats I just thought of this, my sister has her deadbeat husband who lives up your way. Unfortunately the children are all grown now with families of their own, but he owed my sister $36,000 in back child support, he also owed his other wives the same thing. Sperm donors.

Gallup Daily: Obama’s Edge Shrinks to 2 Points
Election Preferences Nearly Tied Again, 47%-45%
PRINCETON, NJ -- Barack Obama's advantage over John McCain has been shrinking since the start of the Republican National Convention, and is now down to just two percentage points -- 47% to 45% -- too close to call. This is according to Gallup Poll Daily tracking from Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 3-5.

There's Something Missing in St. Paul
"And Palin did mention oil and gas drilling, and she effectively connected her Alaskan natural-gas pipeline to Tsar Putin's global aim of energy blackmail. She proved that she knows a bit more about high-table geopolitics than her critics think and that Alaskans know a lot about Russian territorial ambitions, with Russia right across the pond. "

Thanks for posting that URL, Chloe.
One of the things that's troubled me about Mr Obama are his fiscal dealings as he came into political prominence. And, of course Mrs Obama's good fortune in becoming a VP at her hospital, also as he came into prominence.
At some point most politicians start believing all the good things that are said about them, and start believing that they truly are special and deserve the rewards and special opportunities they are afforded.
I'm not going to restate the Journal article Chloe linked to. But, I will say I think there's a lot of there there.

So What Is Fair Game With Sarah Palin? Look at the Rules Hillary Clinton Had to Play By.
By Anne E. Kornblut
Sunday, September 7, 2008; Page B01
Watching Gov. Sarah Palin explode onto the national scene over the last week got me thinking back to a cold evening earlier this year, just before the New Hampshire primary. I was half-listening to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton speak at an auditorium when a strange noise interrupted the event: two young men shouting, in muffled voices, "Iron my shirt!"

Sturg, I'll never feel safe again.
When we were in Panama I saw two lines of leaf cutters, one coming and one going. Their prey was a magnificent frangipani across the street from where I saw the convoy of leaves vanishing. They were amazing!
I came by a few days later and saw that every leaf on the tree, a tree at least 70-feet tall, had been removed.

Barack Obama Supports Drilling In The Bakken Formation?

CROSS-POSTED FROM DAKOTA LIFESTYLE: BEYOND THE WEATHER. LINKS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE ORIGINAL POST.
I have to admit, this truly surprised me.
I’m still leary of Barack Obama, but I’m glad he’s seeing the Bakken oil formation as an important resource for helping fill national energy needs. On the energy front, North Dakota does have a lot to offer–great wind energy potential, vast coal resources, and a great interest in biofuels (including ethanol).
As long as it’s economically feasible, tapping into the Bakken formation while we research and develop things like affordable mass cellulosic ethanol or wind energy transmission makes a lot of sense.
Obama is very right about one thing: the oil boom in North Dakota right now is very important for our local economy. And it’s always nice when North Dakota gets recognized.

"Still, the fact that a spokesman for Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid used the word "shrill" to describe Palin's speech on Wednesday night only made Clinton's camp more convinced that the hockey mom from Wasilla really could win some women over. And that is why Palin's emergence has given the increasingly tight 2008 campaign a kind of symmetry that the "Iron My Shirt" boys, whoever they were, could never have imagined. "

McCain speech viewership eclipses Obama's: Nielsen
5 hours ago
WASHINGTON (AFP) — Republican White House nominee John McCain earned a record 38.9 million television viewers during his convention speech, edging his rival Barack Obama's record from the previous week, the Nielsen group reported Friday.
"Senator McCain amassed an audience of 38.9 million viewers for his speech on two fewer channels than were carrying Senator Obama's speech August 28 to 38.38 million viewers," Nielsen Media Research said in a statement.
McCain's Thursday night speech at his party's convention in St. Paul, Minnesota also outscored that of his fiery vice presidential pick Sarah Palin the previous evening, when 37.2 million tuned in.

Palin Viewership
The McCain campaign must be giddy with this news, just out from Nielsen: Sarah Palin's speech generated 37.2 million viewers, just a 1.1 million viewers fewer than watch Barak Obama's Invesco Field acceptance speech. As Nielsen notes, only six networks carried Palin's speech compared with ten for Obama's.

This is one of those scholarly things with scads of citations and esoteric language
http://www.allacademic.com/meta/p_mla_apa_research_citation/1/4/3/0/5/p143054_index.html
What it comes down to is that early voters tend to be those already mobilized (the true believers on either side) and the elderly who like the option of a mail in.
Those wavering between choices coupled with those who like the "civic duty" feeling of going to the polls are the ones least likely to early vote.
The number of early voters keeps growing, particularly among younger voters, but has not yet become the majority of the voting public except in total vote by mail states such as Oregon.

I have to agree with what Champ said a little while back to ET, the extreme right of the R's, and the extreme left of the D's have us fighting so much that you are not aware of the harm that they both do.They both come off trying to convince the other that they are the only game in town, while the middle of the road people of both parties get put in their never ending blender. I think that-Jason,PM,Champ, and others have, or started to (joined the IND's) figure this out, and looking at all parites. Once that UB switched from HC to BO there has been a big diff, in that she has almost forgetten that she has friends on the other side, Lardass and Jamie just a little, that you can hardly notice. but its there.Patsi-9/11 - KGC ( another of my favs) came back and figured out how to enjoy this blog again, she ignores the knotheads. "We bet this is retaliation for the media’s pathetic rumor mongering the last few days that McCain would dump Palin because of media and SoetorObama attacks on her 17 year old daughter.

Just go back upthread and look at at the vid of Johnny Cash singing with Joni Mitchell. It's pretty cool.

Obama needs to be more direct and specific in his indictments of Bush.
If he's Mr. Nice Guy to Bush & Cheney, he's gonna loose, and we're gonna have 4 more years of Bush.
I hope he & his campaign realize this & follow through with it.
The Repubs did that to Bill Clinton for YEARS over nothing.

How About Chip Taylor?
He wrote Angel of The Morning & Wild Thing among others.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chip_Taylor
Taylor's best known songs are "Wild Thing", which was originally recorded in 1965 by Jordan Christopher & The Wild Ones but became best known as a 1966 hit single for The Troggs (and a 1967 live performance by Jimi Hendrix), and "Angel of the Morning", a hit first for Merrilee Rush in 1968, and then becoming an even bigger hit in 1981 for country-pop singer Juice Newton (whose single sold more than a million copies in the United States). Other Taylor compositions that made entries onto the pop and country charts include "He Sits at Your Table" (Willie Nelson), "I Can't Let Go" (The Hollies), "Worry" (Johnny Tillotson), "Make Me Belong to You", "I Can Make It With You" (The Pozo Seco Singers, Jackie DeShannon), "Any Way That You Want Me" (The Troggs, Evie Sands, Juice Newton), "Step Out of Your Mind", "Country Girl City Man", "I'll Hold Out My Hand", and "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)" (Janis Joplin). Country hits written and composed by Taylor include "Sweet Dream Woman" (Waylon Jennings), "A Little Bit Later On Down the Line" (Bobby Bare) and "Son of a Rotten Gambler" (Emmylou Harris, the Hollies, Anne Murra

ST OF LOYALTY
Were any books censored banned? June Pinell-Stephens, chairwoman of the Alaska Library Association's Intellectual Freedom Committee since 1984, checked her files Wednesday and came up empty-handed.
Pinell-Stephens also had no record of any phone conversations with Emmons about the issue back then. Emmons was president of the Alaska Library Association at the time.Books may not have been pulled from library shelves, but there were other repercussions for Emmons.
Four days before the exchange at the City Council, Emmons got a letter from Palin asking for her resignation. Similar letters went to police chief Irl Stambaugh, public works director Jack Felton and finance director Duane Dvorak. John Cooper, a fifth director, resigned after Palin eliminated his job overseeing the city museum.
Palin told the Daily News back then the letters were just a test of loyalty as she took on the mayor's job, which she'd won from three-term mayor John Stein in a hard-fought election. Stein had hired many of the department heads. Both Emmons and Stambaugh had publicly supported him against Palin.
Emmons survived the loyalty test and a second one a few months later.

What made that song particularly heart wrenching is that is came out in the last year of WWII. Everyone knew is was ending but exactly when and who would make it home safe was still a mystery.
That song and "I'll be home for Christmas" from 1943 were the two tear jerkers of the period.

pretty salient stuff here:
When the matter came up for the second time in October 1996, during a City Council meeting, Anne Kilkenny, a Wasilla housewife who often attends council meetings, was there.
Like many Alaskans, Kilkenny calls the governor by her first name.
"Sarah said to Mary Ellen, 'What would your response be if I asked you to remove some books from the collection?" Kilkenny said.
"I was shocked. Mary Ellen sat up straight and said something along the line of, 'The books in the Wasilla Library collection were selected on the basis of national selection criteria for libraries of this size, and I would absolutely resist all efforts to ban books.'"
what angers me is the fact that she felt the need to look into the possible removal of some books from the library......that's bonehead territory.
Also that is just unacceptable, loyalty or no......

"Stories circulating about flags at the Democratic National Convention are false.
We distributed more than 125,000 American made flags at the Convention - the flags removed from Invesco field were intended for other events and taken without permission. I definitely haven't found any sourcing for the "book list". This seems to be someone's creation not based in truth.

Palin didn't mention specific books at that meeting, Kilkenny said.
Palin herself, questioned at the time, called her inquiries rhetorical and simply part of a policy discussion with a department head "about understanding and following administration agendas," according to the Frontiersman article.

Who cares about Palin. Nothing in her personal background matter as much as the fact that McCain/Palin propose the same GOP policies that have gotten us into our current mess.
Nothing about the candidates' personal stories or character does anything to change that.

Bingo!!
As my wife said tonight she is the VP treat her like one ignore her soon everybody else will.
For Obama to even think about her let alone mention her as he did today is stupid. imo

I think the Republicans are setting themselves up to fall into a trap of their own. Talking about the angry left and arguing that anyone that disagrees with the Republican platform is unpatriotic.
There are plenty of Americans that are angry with the direction this Country is headed - and they are far from unpatriotic.

You are absolutely correct. Getting dragged off into these little issues is tempting but serves no useful purpose. Trusting these people with the White House for another four, much less eight, years is pure insanity.
We need to toss the current occupant out on his posterior hard enough that he bounces all the way back to Texas and then take control of Congress and the White House at least long enough to clean up the god awful mess he and his cohorts have made.

Palin McCain would never get my vote for an extremely large number of reasons.......it's not like the book issue of palin's changes anything whether she did or didnt.......but I stand by my original point......(or under it......) that if she looked into removing some books, that's enough to raise my dander to a high degree of raised danderage..............

Don't even get me started on Gloria Swanson.
Carol Burnett dined out for years on her parody of Gloria in "Sunset Boulevard." Like it was some dumb old, irrelevant movie and that Gloria Swanson was somehow not self-aware in her performance. And the Burnett parody, unfortunately, is what has stuck in the collective consciousness.
But what was never said was that Gloria's performance in the movie, itself, was an even more masterful and brilliantly sophisticated parody of a still older form.
Watch the movie again if you don't believe it. She was magnificent. I consider it one of the greatest performances of any movie actress.
We should watch and listen to old movie stars alot more than we do.
Okay. Fourth quarter starting now. And, for those who care, the Gators' offense has SUCKED tonight!

Dear Hillary,
Where are you? We haven't heard from you since your strong and eloquent speech at the Democratic National Convention. You might be taking a well-deserved vacation--certainly you must need one after all those arduous months campaigning. But we need to hear from you right now. We need your voice to speak for all the women (and there are many of us) who are angry at the assumption that, just because Sarah Palin is female, we will fall in line behind her.
The first paragraph is false since Clinton has been campaigning for Obama since the convention. Clinton had made several statements and who is Patti Davis?.

my raised dander is not by any means something which should cause Ms Palin any concern, you understand........it's not as if anyone is paying any large amount of attention to me or my dander.......
it's not personal......it's just business.......lol

I love how McCain supposedly reclaims his "maverick" role with his VP selection - even though he:
A. Caved to the Right to pick an ultra-conservative
B. Made his pick in a purely political move to attract female voters and solidy the base
C. Made a pick that undermines his central argument of "experience". Now McCain has 2 months to present him self as the candidate of "change" - even though Obama based his campaign on that message from the outset.
In making the pick - instead of going his own way - McCain caved to the Right Wing, Politics and Obama.

Quick! Before someone bans it! Read "Lamb - The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal" by Christopher Moore. I've recommended it to you before, but I hadn't read it myself at that point. However, it had been recommended to me by someone whose assessment of such matters I trust implicitly, so I took the chance and mentioned it to you. I just started reading it today, and my friend was right. It really is laugh out loud wonderful!

Rudee Judy Annie thought censorship was part of being mayor.
Boston's Mayor, Thomas Menino, responded in irrational haste by ordering the city to purchase censorware -- specifically CyberPatrol -- and to install it on all computers in the Boston Public Library systems, on all computers within the Boston Public schools, and on all other city computers as well, including the computers at Boston City Hall.
Shamefully, the Trustees of the Boston Public Library defied the American Library Association's Library Bill of Rights and approved the Mayor's fiat.
The "liberal" Boston Globe applauded the Mayor's move, in a Pecksniffian editorial that began, "Pornography pollutes the Internet like smog on a sunny day" and stressed the need for "filtering smut." The Globe repeated the tired argument that the only way we can avoid government censorship is by censoring ourselves -- thus making government censorship unnecessary. (Why are liberals constitutionally incapable of understanding that self-censorship is the worst censorship of all?)
BEHIND THE SCENES:
"The Mayor's Office Censored My Painting at Artscape"
by Aaron Edelson
by Aaron Edelson
Baltimore's Artscape is supposed to provide a unique chance for local artists to create an aesthetic playground. However, Mayor O'Malley's office removed one of my paintings from Artscape's City Hall exhibit because it was deemed "offensive."

champ, you asked about traffic. we average about 6,000 page views per day (that is individual readers, as opposed to numbers of hits, always an inflated figure as it counts repeated visits by individual users). friday's spike topped 20,000 page views for some reason (apparently due to links on huffington and a few other blogs). our lurkers, by the way, generally total about 15-20 times the number of posted comments. not surprisingly, that number rises dramatically on days we are linked on other high-traffic blogs.

You thought the librarian had been asked to sign a loyalty oath.
Posted by: Obama loyalty oath | September 6, 2008 11:23 PM
No, you tried to write off Palin's inquiring into book banning as some loyalty test.
False. You did that. I pointed out the city department heads , several besides the librarian were asked to submit letters of resignation because they supported the former mayor.
And that you did not appear to know the difference between a loyalty oath and a loyalty test and that is still true.
