If the Russian smackdown of Georgia were a novel about American presidential politics, it might go something like this: a Republican administration naturally friendly to its party's nominee sees the conflict coming and does nothing to stop it.
Whether merely serendipitous for the GOP or a dastardly bit of contrivance, the timing of this Cold War retro moment came as the opposing party's nominee was on vacation in Hawaii. While Barack Obama played golf, John McCain was at the ready with a formal speech reacting to the Russian moves.
How would an imaginative novelist tell this tale? Perhaps the fictional version would involve the White House greenlighting Georgia to attack a breakaway region, expecting that the Russian response could be fierce. Or maybe a wink and a nod to Russia itself. Or both.
But we don't need a novelist to be sure of one thing: Republicans do believe that the more dangerous the world seems to voters, the easier it will be to portray Obama as unready, untested and downright risky.

I think pootty poot can manage evil on his own without the assistance of the GOP. A President has to be ready to respond to a crisis whether he is in the WH or deep sea fishing off of Cabo. Obama came out pretty fast with s statement. The usual fluff and vagueries from both parties but the GOP get the bad end since this is all the result of Shrub's lack of talent at soul reading.

Sorry Craig, but that dog won't hunt. Americans are attracted to shiny things and the Olympics are one big shiny event. When the majority of our country can't point out the state of Georgia, I doubt many understand the dangers within the country of Georgia.
If I were to take the temperature of the country right now, McCain can stand behind as many flags as he wants, puff out his chest and say he'll stand up to the Russian, but most Americans will yawn and see if Michael Phelps has won another gold. The country's new mantra: if it doesn't concern us, then don't concern us.

Mr. D,
As you're salivating about "The Atlantic" article and gearing up for full-on
Clinton bashing this morning, huffing and puffing, here's an article posted
about two hours ago on the Obama friendly MSNBC website,
which states that one of the main reasons Hillary lost was because
she refused to go nuclear negative on Obama and paint him as
un-American when most of her advisors advised her to do so. Her refusal
caused ongoing tension in the campaign.

Good morning -- my friends and I were talking about the tragically bogus SWAT police raid on the home of Berwyn Heights, MD Mayor. There was a study done by CATO Institute about how these "no-knock" raids and mistaken house, mistaken identity, or false assumption raids are on the rise with violent results.
Here is a map of these raids throughout the US. I don't think it includes all these raids, since there are two that I know about that occurred in Virginia and are not on the list.

The French have always done what they perceived to be in their national interest. Sometimes they were right, and sometimes wrong. But, they have enough independence to keep their forces out of a U.S. dominated NATO military structure. That probably makes them appear as something of a loose cannon to Russian eyes.

But this is not the time. HRC stepped up and is campaigning for him, so we must follow the lead. I am not saying: Go vote for the guy (I won´t) but I think that if we want to have another shot with HRC we should stay put.
Every little hassle that might remotely be attributed to the HRC camp will me magnified 1 trillion times and blamed on her. I do not think we can have another blame game, if HRC is to have a future in politics in this country.
BO will falter, there is no question about it. The only question is: WHEN......
I say, after the convention. People are allready starting to realise that this rockstar phenom is not the chance to take. The campaign is making a big fault to do this 75.000 people extravaganza, which is going to wreak havoc sooner than later.
If BO after the election doesn´t pull away from JmC in double digits, it is over....And he knows...

The release of these internal Clinton memos is the most damning counter to any charge that she was the best option. All they did was further highlight how unqualified she was to manage the strong personalities on her staff. They further demonstrate that early on she knew she couldn't win on her own merits and that they needed to destroy her opponent as well
In previous elections, it would have worked but this year, people are wanting things different. Now this may work for McCain, but since his celebrity has bought him some chits with the MSM, he isn't going to get called to the carpet for it like Clinton did...

Jason,
Your comments and those from Clinton supporters lead me to wonder if any of you care about the significant damage a McCain presidency can do to this country economically, with regards to a generational shift of the Supreme Court and our long term safety.
I think it's hilarious that the same women who champion women's rights think McCain will do anything to preserve them.
People who claim to advocate for the poor or middle class honestly think McCain gives a shit about them when all he wants to do is make permanent a set of tax cuts he first opposed just to make himself look good politically. Now they are in place, he supports the same cuts he called frivolous.
All he wants to do is follow the Orwellian idea that constant war is necessary for peace...and to distract the folks at home about how bad things really are.
It never ceases to amaze me at the selfishness of her voters. You claim that Obama supporters are cultists and I say Bullshit. I don't know any who would have voted for McCain...I guess that makes the Obama people the truer Democrats because they would still vote like one had their choice failed to get the nom...

The Quality of Mercy
The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown.
His scepter shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings.
But mercy is above this sceptered sway;
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings;
It is an attribute of God himself;
And earthly power doth then show like God's
When mercy seasons justice.
Yeah, but..............

Canadian food prices have been higher than this country for a long time... "any different than Bill Clinton's tantrum that he has quietly been throwing? I"
For the most part this has been one of those media creations. There has been so much selective editing and deletions of his comments as to make the reports a tissue of lies. Even Sen. Obama countered some of it by calling the principal interview "difficult" and saying Pres Clinton had handled it well and that they had had excellent conversations.
I'm sure his feelings were hurt by that Axelrod created nonsense in SC, but he is too much of a politician to let a temper tantrum get in the way of practical negotiations.

There cannot be more that two direct links in any post or it gets dumped into never never land for review. A long post will sometimes get lost in the ether so if you do one, it is a good idea to copy before hitting submit to prevent frustration.

TECH NOTE: I found many legit comments held in spam bin that were held for containing more than 2 links. So here's a reminder, our spam filter holds comments with more than 2 links. So if you've got more than 2 links to share, please divide into separate comments. Checking that pending pin is just not something i've been able to make time to keep up with.
As you might notice, our spam filter does work but we have to live with this incovenience to get the job done. If you could see our spam bin, you'd agree that it's worth it to keep that nasty junk out of our threads.

Reminds me of my friend Isaac Hayes when he sang:
I Never can say goodbye, no, no, no, no, now.
I never can say goodbye.
Even though the pain and heartache
seems to follow me wherever I go,
Though I try and try to hide my feelings,
they always seems to show,
Then you try to say you're leaving me
and I always have to say no,
tell me why is it so.
That I never can say goodbye, no, no, no, no, now.

~
These hearts were woven of human joys and cares,
Washed marvellously with sorrow, swift to mirth.
The years had given them kindness. Dawn was theirs,
And sunset, and the colours of the earth.
These had seen movement, and heard music; known
Slumber and waking; loved; gone proudly friended;
Felt the quick stir of wonder; sat alone;
Touched flowers and furs and cheeks. All this is ended.
There are waters blown by changing winds to laughter
And lit by the rich skies, all day. And after,
Frost, with a gesture, stays the waves that dance
And wandering loveliness. He leaves a white
Unbroken glory, a gathered radiance,
A width, a shining peace, under the night
The Dead

I had posted a few thoughts on Edwards last night...only to delete them....I am still hurting from his betrayal. I am amazed as to how personally I am taking the news of his affair. I wondered how he felt during the Spitzer revelation. I wondered "why" he stayed in the race. But after all is said and done, he is the Gary Hart of the new millenium. One thing about Edwards, he is cold fish. He is proud of the fact he doesn't cry and doesn't love Ms. Hunter. Yet, he is so passionate about the poor...or maybe he is duping us all again. Yep, a bit embarrassed I am taking this personally. Sorry, for not posting last night (where this dribble belongs).

whskyjack- I'm going with- it ain't over till the lady in the pant suit sings. I even think Big Dawg is leaning that way, with his statement last week which he qualified by saying
“I’m not, and I never was mad at Senator Obama. I think everybody’s got a right to run for president if he qualifies under the Constitution,
I think he knows something we don't know yet.
I find Mark Penn's "release the tapes" interesting too. Could be he is referring to Wright, as he is mentioned elsewhere in the emails, could be another tape....

One of the uglier Anne Coulter remarks about Edwards was that he was such a user that he should have a bumper sticker on his car reading, "Ask me about my dead son.". That remark is what provoked Elizabeth Edwards to call in on Hardball and chastize her.

Flatus, this is way out of my territory, but I am warning you in a civil way. Even if the hurt is that bad, try to forgive. Forgive doesn´t mean forget, but it means letting go. By holding on to a grudge you do not free yourself and you are constantly staying aware of what happend in the past.
Even if the hurt is very high, holding on to a grudge will not make it any easier. Let go and let the big man upstairs do the rest. I speak from experience....

Petitioning for her name to be put in nomination is counter productive. Insistence on that move could force the powers that be to try to go for a vote by acclimation rather than a simple roll call. A floor fight over a vote by acclimation would be the weapon the Republicans could use about a "divided" party. Of course I happen to think that the PUMAs are Republicans just making trouble.
In a roll call, the name does not have to be put in nomination for the delegates to vote for that person. That is why Hillary is not signing the request to put her name in nomination but is also calling for the roll call.
Nice and peaceful, makes the point, everybody goes home almost happy.

"The roots of this tragedy lie in the decision of Georgia's separatist leaders in 1991 to abolish South Ossetian autonomy. This turned out to be a time bomb....."
That could well be true, but the even bigger time bomb is that lovely little oil pipeline out of the Black Sea that runs through Georgia . Russia doesn't like the fact that it can't shut off oil to Europe because that pipe line isn't under their control, so they have been bombing the cities along that line even though that is not disputed territory.

Edwards arranging for them to spend all that time together makes it all even worse. Insult to injury. I have no idea how Elizabeth has dealt with all this. Just to put up the conservative arguement: No company would pay income tax even if they didn't escape them through loopholes, because they always pass through costs to the consumer and thus all taxes are paid by individuals it's just a lot of those taxes are hidden in the price of products.

The PUMAs may not have started out that way, but the Republicans have definitely jumped on the bandwagon. PUMA is being used as well as scads of similar groups created i.e. "Dems for Hillary". I receive tons of email that start off sounding like disaffected HIllary voters that then pitch for McCain money.
The roll call always counts. Of course she won't win short of a total Obama meltdown prior to the convention and a whole lot of vote changing, but her delegates will be officially counted in a way they never would be in a voice vote.

Please, shed a tear for Clinton. Not only did she have EVERY advantage, she had the name recognition, the experts and the infrastructure. And they blew it all. So don't get mad because people like Dean refused to help her out. Donna Brazille had the right to stay neutral or go with Obama if she wished. Face it. MD
I acknowledged a long time ago the deficiencies in the Clinton campaign. My comments were to the back stabbing and double dealing of the party. The phony math used to deprive voters of equal representation and a caucus system that amounted to little more than thuggery in many areas.
I'm perfectly willing to see Clinton's flaws though I think once she gave the boot to the trouble makers, she had a very well run but too late campaign that truly reflected her expertise.
None of the above makes me respect Axelrod's Chicago's machine or makes me believe that Sen. Obama is ready for the Presidency despite all of his good qualities, and they are many and significant, He is simply to inexperienced on the national and international scene and too much a product of the image makers. My only hope is that he will win, will grow into the job, and will have a great cabinet to assist his decision making. That and hoping the wheels of that bus roll over Axelrod's head.

This is a phrase that I really despise: " that dog won't hunt".
I have heard it used in political circles for years and somehow it strikes me as unsophisticated, uneducated and a form of uncouth slang. I am not sure if I can really finger WHY I dislike this phrase, but I do. Probably since being in Europe for 10 years, it's something I don't really hear in European and UK English. I remember Republicans using that phrase against Kerry in 2006 and I really bristled. It just sounds like something that the two mountain men in Deliverance would say.
Silly post today, but it was what I first reacted to after reading comments...
Oh and Craig, I am glad Obama issued a statement. I believe if he just remained in "vacation mode" during this potential crisis, he would be seen as a totally oblivious amateur, and that obviously is not an image any of us want to see projected (well most of us anyway).
More interested in the Emails from the old Clinton campaign. The whole crew could join Adult Children From Dysfuntional Political Families (ACDPF) . I am convinced that several 12 step interventions could still be helpful :) ... except for Mark Penn... I think some people lack the basic skills of rehabilitation.
Cheers,

ah I just googled "That Dog Won't Hunt"
2. that dog don't hunt
12 up, 35 down
pseudo-country-bumpkin wisdom uttered in response to news item or rumor designed to scandalize a political opponent.
The idea is that the rumor is either very easily refuted or is unimportant to the public, and thus is as worthless as a dog who won't hunt.
****
Aha! So it is as I viewed it. In honor of "that dog won't hunt" I offer this:

Another little opinion piece I don't really like reading, but I do agree with the last line: "If not, the party could be headed for a real tragedy."
Hillary's psychological bloc
Hillary Clinton's supporters seem to want some kind of 'catharsis' at the Democratic convention.
"More likely, uncompromising Clinton supporters will experience those emotions not when Clinton is given her due but when Obama officially clinches the nomination.
The party can only hope that that catharsis will purge the Clinton holdouts of their refusal to recognize reality. If not, the party could be headed for a real tragedy."

So Jamie, let's agree to this:
Hillary ran a terrible campaign that included many incompetent advisors and failed to take decisive action to correct it until it was too late. However, she probably would have been the most competent candidate if she'd made it that far.
Obama ran a brilliant campaign, avoiding all of the drama that plagued the Clinton campaign, and showed that he understood message discipline, while successfully navigating minefields like the Reverend Wright debacle, which could have sunk other campaigns. However, he's less experienced than Clinton and will have to grow on the job.
Can we agree on that?

Is His Legal Name Obama or Soetoro?
"There is now evidence indicating that his actual valid Birth Certificate on file in Hawaii says Barry Soetoro. That was the Indonesian identity that Obama acquired when Lolo Soetoro adopted him.
It seems that Obama put a fake Birth Certificate on his official campaign website because he wanted to hide his Indonesian identity from us, including his Muslim background and that pesky Constitutional dual-citizenship matter.
... our researchers have been unable to locate the public record showing that Barry Soetoro legally changed his name back to Barack Obama."

That's pretty close. You didn't mention one aspect that was totally the doing of the Democratic party that Obama took advantage of and Hillary's team failed to consider.
The weighted vote that meant she could take the majority of the popular vote, but he could end up with more or equal electoral votes just by virtue of location of those votes. This is where Obama's voter registration, GOTV activities made a big big difference particularly when combined with the one-sided AA vote.
Manipulation of the Caucus system again via use of the overwhelming AA partisanship plus some shenanigans with the Richardson and Edwards contingent that amounted to threatening or shutting out the Clinton voters. (I saw this first hand in Washington). It was a masterful exercise by the Obama team unless you have an objection to voter intimidation.
I don't begrudge the AA voter majority and can appreciate the desire to finally vote for a talented man of their own. I do object to the Democratic party rules that made it possible to literally steal delegates. When combined with the Florida and Michigan rulings and the power play four vote theft by the rules committee, I feel that the fact Clinton fought back to as close as she came was damn near a miracle.
I think the absolute least her delegates deserve is the chance to cast their votes for her. What they really deserve unless Obama is too petty is her as the VP nominee to give them a reason to make the ticket a landslide.

This is so incredibly stupid. You are free to call yourself anything you want as long as there is no intent to defraud. I have a few years of school records under a different name than that on my birth certificate simply because of my mother's fourth marriage. No adoption, but it was easier to use the stepfather's last name. Once away from that situation I returned to my birth name.
A lot of divorcee's go back to their birth name (I did) without taking any legal action other than requesting a new Social Security card and Driver's License. No legal action required.

Jamie,
One thing the Atlantic article pointed out was that the Clinton campaign didn't contest states that Obama would win, therefore lowering their delegate counts in counties that voted for Clinton, making her delegate margin even lower. That, according to the Clinton notes, was due to a lack of ground campaign planning and a calculation that the race would be over by Super Tuesday. But don't blame Obama for playing and winning. Clinton was like a football team that kept passing, while avoiding their running game. And then after the game complains when they lose to a team that kept intercepting their passes and ran the ball down their throats. You play the card you're dealt.
While Obama had the AA vote (not at the start, I like to remind folks. Clinton had that until they messed that up too.), Hillary also had the older white woman advantage. But because her staff was so dysfunctional, they lost the younger white women to Obama who gravitated more toward his message of change versus the clarion call of gender.

Mr. D
"She'll get a few hundred, mainly because all of the rest of her delegates will back Obama"
Actually no. She has never officially released them. As a matter of honor that means they should vote for her on the first ballot as they are pledged to do. The SDs are another matter as they are not bound by any elective process. I would suspect that she would end up with the votes she won, but fewer than what was credited to her due to the switch of at least some of those SDs originally slated for her that switch to Obama.
Of course, now if something truly horrendous came out about Sen. Obama (not expected or desired), all of the SDs could switch to her which would make her the nominee because neither of them could win the nomination without them on just the votes garnered in primaries and caucuses.

If Obama’s name is really Barry Soetoro, his primary results are all disqualified and he is not the nominee
"... if it’s true that Obama’s name is actually “Barry Soetoro”, as it increasingly seems (and as it’s recorded on his birth certificate), then any time he’s been listed on a ballot as “Barack Obama” has been a fraud, and those results should be disqualified.
If appearing on a ballot under a name different from your legal name disqualifies someone from office, then Obama/Soetoro would not only lose the votes cast for him in the Democratic primaries, but would also lose his Senate seat in Illinois, since those votes were cast for a “Barack Obama”, when in fact the man calling himself “Barack Obama” is legally “Barry Soetoro”.
When exactly did Barry Soetoro start calling himself Barack Obama, and why didn’t he go through the proper legal steps to change his name?
And, if he DID in fact legally change his name, why hasn’t he disclosed this?"

"Why would Bill Clinton make the strange comment last week "if he qualifies under the Constitution"? "
That isn't what he said. He said, "The Constitution sets the qualifications for President" speaking about anyone running for the office. In addition, he said a whole lot of complimentary things about Sen. Obama's talents that somehow got cut out of most media reports in order to twist it into another Clinton hate tirade.
People forget what a total policy wonk Pres. Clinton is. Ask him the time and he will build you a watch thinking that you are as fascinated by the nitty gritty of the details as he is. That makes it easy for a reporter to pick and choose the most damning of remarks from amid the conversation. It got him in trouble during Primary season and is still getting him in trouble.

I've never understood people not voting.
One thing I always look for in candidates is empathy. They may be imperfect just like the rest of us. We'll just have to keep up the good fight.

Boss Tweed
Muhammed Ali did it legally to reflect his change of religion and to claim a military status. That required the legal action to avoid charges of trying to defraud the government.
Barack Obama was his legal name on his birth certificate. It is what his mother named him. She had no relationship with Soetero until several years later. He used or went by Barry Soetero or Barry Obama at later dates during his youth to be more comfortable socially. His legal name is still Barack Obama and there is no need to alter that condition.
As I said, I can call myself Petunia Periwinkle, get identification under the new name, work, file tax returns etc. As long as there is no criminal intent to defraud, there is no crime. For most activities it is still a better idea to get a legal change simply for tracking records.
I understand that Tullulah Willis is changing her name legally to Lula Willis because she doesn't like the name daddy Bruce Willis stuck her with. At some later date someone could come along and find copies of an "original" birth certificate and a "revised" birth certificate. That wouldn't mean they are two separate people or that she wouldn't be free to use either name.

Obama is over 35.
He has been a permanent resident of the US for more than 14 years.
Is he not American? Is that what you imply?
Are you doing McCains work for him?
Article Two of the Constitution sets the principal qualifications to be eligible for election as President. A Presidential candidate must:
be a natural-born citizen of the United States;
be at least thirty-five years old;
have been a permanent resident in the United States for at least fourteen years.
Additionally, the Constitution disqualifies some people from the Presidency. Under Article One of the United States Constitution, the Senate has the option, upon conviction, of disqualifying impeached individuals from holding other federal offices, including the Presidency.[4] Under the Twenty-Second Amendment, no one can be elected President more than twice. The Twenty-Second Amendment also specifies that anyone who serves more than two years as President or Acting President, of a term for which someone else was elected President, can only be elected President once. Under the Twelfth Amendment a person who is no longer eligible to be President may not be Vice President either.

Clinton not convention keynote
Contrary to some early reporting, Hillary Clinton's Tuesday night speech at the Democratic National Convention won't be the event's "keynote speech," a defining convention role occupied in 2004 by Sen. Barack Obama.
The Convention Committee never actually put that out, but it's been fairly widely reported (and, in a few cases, corrected).
Clinton "is one of four prime-time headline speakers. We will have a separate keynote speaker," said Jenny Backus, a consultant to the convention. "Stay tuned."

Mary, I don't know what or if it was to mean anything. It just seems to be falling in line with questions being raised about Obama vis a vis his birth certificate. We are learning now that the Clinton campaign had a tape and didn't release it. So I wouldn't be surprised if there are other issues lurking that they do know about
I got chatting with someone at the Clinton headquarters last week. I made it known that I am supporting the work of The Denver Group, consider Hillary's hands tied being the faithful Democrat that she is and that now is the time for her supporters to say and do for her what she can't regarding putting her name into nomination and on the roll call. She replied "I think you are exactly right"

"For those who have not followed this story, Soetoro is the name on Obama’s Birth Certificate (BC) because a new BC was issued when he was adopted by Lolo Soetoro, his step-father. His original BC, which we assume was issued for Barack Hussein Obama at birth, would have been sealed at that time.
We assert that Barry Soetoro acquired Indonesian citizenship in approximately 1965-1966, and may still hold it.
The Birth Certificate published by Obama on his campaign website ... and distributed to the media was forged because the real BC on file is in the name Soetoro, an identity he apparently wanted to hide from the American people."

This little child will become a physiological basket case because her parents didn't bother to take advantage of the free dental care provided by the government. Now if this was the US, the child might even be able to sue her own parents because of their obvious neglect, but this is China, and the child in question is after all just a female.

I didn't know Isaac Hayes had died until this morning. As for "Never Can Say Goodbye", it was originally a big hit for the Jackson 5. However, Motown wouldn't release it as a single because it sounded too grown up for the Jackson 5. Frustrated producers blasted the song over the speakers in the Motown office. Berry Gordy asked who was singing that song. When told it was the Jackson 5 and that others in the company wouldn't release it as a single, he said, "That song is a hit!" He forced the song to be released as a single.

The Russian Empire Strikes Back
Russia's invasion of Georgia has less to do with South Ossetia and more about a Russia that never reconciled itself to losing an empire — or being treated like a second rate power all these years. Russia's resentment has only grown as oil prices have risen, turning Russia, with the five million barrels of oil it exports a day, into a first-world economic power. It was only a matter of time, then, before Russia taught the world a lesson.

I think we can trust the Russians to take every oppotunity that come their way to dominate Europe. Right now they have the EU by the short hairs with the EU's reliance on energy from Russia.
As you said it is about oil but not in the old leftist manner of corporate dominance. A good many foriegn policy issues in the 21st century will be about energy. Just a sad fact of life. Our civilization is built on machine production and that takes energy.

I am just reading yesterday's posts and admit I am a day late and a dollar short, but are you people serious? Elizabeth Edwards underwent hormone treatments after they lost their son so that she could provide John Edwards with another son, which is probably why she developed cancer and it is ok for him to then F some other woman while she is stricken with that cancer? Oh yes, I know she was in remission at the time -- well that's completely different then, isn't it? Of course, he can still serve in an Obama administration everyone is piping in -- how politically correct and "live and let live" can we be? This is not just cheating -- this is over the top, despicable behavior. I thought we had had enough of this type of person in Washington. As James Carville said, if he wants to get 5% of the women's vote, sure he can run for something again. I personally think he's toast.

My computer died and I'm still working off a friends waiting for my new one to arrive so the biggest problem is I can't log on to my own network and I'm just a the mercy of whatever is in the ether and I get kicked off a lot.
We had a huge community meeting last night almost everyone in the four block area came. The people from the Sheriff's dept were fairly useless. But now we have a email list and are thinking about a neighborhood blog.
There haven't been any break-ins since we posted the warnings. There is a lot of frustration and unhappiness with the police response.
The most important thing is for the Sheriff to keep us informed of ANY crime in our neighborhood so people can be warned if something is going on ...not two weeks later after 12 other people have been victimized.

If anyone paid attention to the struggles several of us have had with Typekey, I just lost my little blue square again. I went to the SpyTalk blog again whcih asked me to sign in -- which this blog has never done -- and got my little blue square back.
I have a feeling that I jump around on the different sites etc, and that confuses the circuit or whatever. I am going to try to be careful from now on.
Oh, and the Spy Talk story is very interesting - maybe even frightening.
