Good Sunday Morning to everyone,
Craig, you looked handsome on the video wearing that classy, black jacket. But, I must admit, I haven't watched Olbermann for ages and haven't missed him.
That strawberry shake Obama was sipping sure made me crave one.
Wow. 32% of the population is overweight? Is that true?
I may disagree with Obama on a lot of issues, but his being thin and
in shape is not one of them. It shows he's disciplined. How could anyone
dislike him for that?

Correction, actually, I think Craig's video clip stated,
"32 % of the U.S. population is obese."
That's even more unbelievable. Not that I'm suggesting it isn't true, but
that seems like a lot of obese people.

"32 % of the U.S. population is obese."
prof m, and what percentage of these 32% are termed morbidly obese? no wonder the trans fat ban and get-the-kids-off-their-butts efforts are seriously being pushed by health care/insurance folk.

Hi Julie,
I wonder why so many kids in the U.S are considered obese. I also wonder
if obesity is a problem in other countries.
I saw a book by a French woman at Barnes and Noble entitled,
"French Women Don't Get Fat." I read some it while drinking a latte. The book was pretty interesting. It stated that most French women don't ever diet,
but eat what they want, just in small portions.

Hi Prof,
Yes It is a problem is some other countries as well.
And the sad thing is that some schools are now dropping physical education classes. Sturge is correct. The inactivity due to sitting and playing computer games for the younger kids and texting full time for teens. Our change in society.

Well this just prove the stupidity of people. Should I say this takes the cake?
America is obese, diabetes is soaring to epidemic levels....By the year 2030, 11.2 percent of U.S. adults are expected to have the condition. Obesity is the strongest modifiable risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes.
Maybe we are seeing, why people think Obama is arrogant....because he's not a fat slob.
You'd think in a sane world that Obama would be praised for his healthy habits.

Prof Marcia,
There was an article on this subject not too long ago.
Not sure of the reason. I just remember it because of an incident from childhood. That same article did say that some other countries are also experiencing the same thing. Have you all really stopped and looked at all the sugar content in cereal? it is beyond belief. If they are not [utting sugar in, they are adding corn syrup which is just as bad or worse. Even the old standby, tomato soup now has corn syrup.

Agree with you on the supersizing - it's rediculous.
When i saw others talking about an overweight society this morning, the first thing I thought of was 'junk food' (my favorite kind).
I truly think that people overeat for one single reason. They're not getting the nutrients their body needs. We could eat the junk we eat 24/7 and still never get what we need.

WSJ
A (large) number of years ago I did a four month study of Wall Street Journal news articles that had an ecological side to them.
Going in, I hypothesized that the Journal was hopelessly biased against ecological interests; upon completion, I was more than pleased when I concluded that the Journal was remarkably even handed in its reporting on the subject.
I did not evaluate the editorial content.
Over the four month period I combed the Journal finding every article that talked about ecological choices. I took into consideration such things as prominence, length of discussion, scientific rigor, evenhandedness, and probably some other factors that I don't recall.
There were scores of articles. One that I recall talked about the aquifer in South Florida and the role of oolitic limestone in that aquifer. There were other articles of similar depth.
Although the Journal is going through a period of transition to its new owner, my continuing impression has been that the Journal is a fine newspaper if one is able to separate its editorial content from the news that it quite accurately and completely reports.
I am much more suspect of the news articles in the NY Times to which I also subscribe.

"Obama doesn't do well in Town Hall settings."
This is so interesting! If the polling is close or if McCain is perceived to have an edge by then, he should insist that the 3 debates have Town Hall and direct one-on-one components or else he won't participate. America will eat it up!
What does "not out of 'Central Casting' " mean? If it is generally perceived (especially by the Media) to include his race, then he is still playing the race card. All he will have done is changed some words but the code is the same. I bet if the other side said "Central Casting", racism would be screamed.
I am a Black Democrat and I know the Code(s) -- all of them! Barack had better get on with the people's business and issues or he will be in trouble in November. You can count on America to embrace underdogs and shun phonies.

"Certainly, if the next president were to bring former adversaries into his inner circle, in the No. 2 slot or as members of his administration, he would display that rare combination of humility and confidence required to perform wisely at the highest level. But could a president really create a team of rivals today, and would that team actually be able to get anything done? UB, I have had a weight problem my whole life...
I take exception to this characterization:
"Maybe we are seeing, why people think Obama is arrogant....because he's not a fat slob."
It is amazing to me to read about how much dislike there still is for "people of size". I hired a fat woman to work at my shop. She asked if her weight would be an issue for us and not want us to hire her. I, and my business partner, looked at each other and we both said "well if if would be an issue, it sure would make us both hypocrites. Besides my own weight problem, my business partner's husband is over 350 lbs. We hired her and she is great.
Let's get away from pejoratives against big people. It's a very intimate issue for me and many people with weight issues and it is just not correct.

I completely agree that these food additives are reminiscent of the tobacco/addiction additives. Salt is another thing that's added all the time. After my mother's heart attack, she gave up salt. (very difficult because she was a serious salt lover) After a while she couldn't stand to even salt eggs because, she said, there was so much natural salt in everything. (I wouldn't know because unfortunately, I salt the hell out of everything.)

I so agree with you on the issue of weight.I have many friends and family who deal with this and it certainly isn't helpful being insulted.When I read comments calling people "Fat Slobs" well I think of being a chunky overweight kid being picked on by the school bully.If these people hurling the insults could only live a day in the lives of the ones they insult!

The "skinny" Obama should challenge McBush to a FOOT race. Obama & his people should be PLAYING UP his physical fitness, IMHO.
I just listened to the screaming McLaughlin Group. They're steeped in politics and are political junkies all. What they're missing is that the average Joe is getting sound, or more likely video, bites of Obama.
They aren't seeing the arrogance or hubris that the Group talked about. Folks are seeing a smiling man who's representing the US in a POSITIVE light, e.g the crowd in Germany. It isn't a negative, IMO.
Ludicrous is ludicrous and skinny is goofy.

Ping Pong,
I'm not sure what you are watching but all this news coverage does is confirm the Rand study that shows that 3 of every 4 stories about Obama is negative.
Tom Brokaw has shown a hostility and contempt for Obama because he's still trying to sell his greatest generation books.
I wonder if the MSM has to be so hard on Obama because they are unwilling to admit that they were lapdogs for Bush in the lead up to the war. I wonder if they are feeling the guilt of being intellectually lazy after having just accepted the Bush talking points?
People doubt whether Obama can be effective and that's fine. What I can't fathom is how the standard bearer for the party that created this horrendous mess is getting no where near the scrutiny.
Why hasn't McCain been taken to task for inferring that the anthrax used in the 2001 attacks came from Iraq? Am I the only person who ever wondered my only Democratic politicians were targetted, or the then anchor of what was perceived as the most liberal of news outlets?

"I'd be willing to bet there is not a working class person within four blocks of where I now sit who has even heard of this media manufactured Obama fracas. Yesterday Smokey, the apartment maintenance man next door, helped me haul a dead washing machine to the city dump. I asked him what he thought about the Obama thing.
"Huh?" he said.
He spoke for millions."

Interesting point Bear -- but I saw it as the opposite, that they laid off Obama because of their blind following of Bush to war. That they'll think people forget all the jingoistic broadcasts, and turn into the anti-war crowd. Either way, it's disgusting.

OK, folks, my argument is not really the intricacies of cell phone etiquette. It is that that type of issue is the type our congress chooses to consider despite all of the other more pressing problems we face right now, and the authoritarian mentality to legislate EVERYTHING that may just be a trivial annoyance. "Tyrrany of the Majority" is what I'll call it, although I think someone else already has.

The right to use a cell phone is not written in the constituion. Unless you are alone, using a cell phone in public always includes intruding on someone elses space. There are places where the intrution is less but a crowded airplane is not one of them.

OK, folks, here is an very easy way to end the 'inrusion' of other people using cell phones in crowded spaces. It's a technique that requires you to not be afraid of people, so it may not work for you as well as it does for me.
Have a conversation with the offender as if you are the person on the other end of the line. When they tell you they are talking to someone else, Pardon yourself, but indicate your interest in the topic of discussion and continue to offer your perspective. If they haven't begun to walk away from you by then, trust me, they will. Works EVERY time.

You won't have to look very hard, dog. Remember, you need to be cordial and congenial, to the point where your sanity may be in question from the offender's perspective. Make sure it seems you are genuinely interested in the topic of discussion, no matter how mundane. Have fun.

I'm all for personal freedom but only up to the point where the majority must suffer because of the rudeness of one. It's bad enough that we have to listen to mobile noise machines throbbing with ear drum shattering crud. Or assinine youth using every four letter word in the universe at the top of their lungs on public transportation.
While I don't believe in coercive legislation for something as trivial as wearing, CD player volume, or the use of a cell phone, unlike public streets or conveyances, Airlines are private businesses. As such they have a right to regulate the behavior of their clients while on the premises. If the airline says No to cell phones, then either don't use the thing or find another airline.

Deluded We Stand On Race And Gender
stumble digg reddit del.ico.us news trust Posted August 2, 2008 | 07:39 AM (EST)
" Among our weak points as Americans is a tendency to believe major issues are "done and dusted" long before we have even scratched the surface of their resolution. The French, for example, recognize more than we "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose" (the more things change, the more they remain the same). This election season has revealed that despite such signs of progress as the early twentieth century successful push for the female vote and many years later the Women's Rights Movement, despite the American Civil War during which 600,000 soldiers died, the Civil Rights Movement and The Civil Rights Act of 1964, problems of gender and race bias have not been sufficiently addressed or resolved. You don't have to be physically active to avoid being fat. I'll be the first to admit I spend a great deal of time in front of the computer/TV, but the key to avoid gaining weight is watching what you eat! Smaller portions and healthier foods is the way to go. If America could stop supersizing everything, we'd be fine. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with physical activity, of course, but if you are like me and hate to exercise, you can still maintain a healthy body weight if you are nutritionally smart! The options are out there!

Nope, because they were already split up. The only fair thing would have been a re-vote....but that might have chenged the outcome and the DNC wasn't about to allow it. Hmmm, 2008, FL and MI, DNC.....2000, FL, Supreme Court -- it's deja vu all over again...

This is very true, but courtesy of the last 8 years of this president and many more of Republican control of Congress, we have a national debt with more commas than a Tolstoy novel, a deficit that mounts by billions monthly, an infrastructure that is a half century old and crumbling, and a population fearing that it is on the edge of a new great depression.
There are 7 billion people on the planet who would like to have something minimally resembling a liveable standard of living. The only way the United States can help to make that happen is to be financially healthy and environmentall clean itself.

2. As for McCain and the anthrax, he was on Letter in October 2001, saying he "heard reports, but don't hold him to it, that the Anthrax came from Iraq".
My bullshit alarm went off immediately. I thought it was odd that Al Qaeda or Saddam would target Democratic Senators, or reporters perceived to be liberals. I always thought is was a Bush job designed to take attention away from their failures pre 9/11 and to be the first in the many steps in the lead up to war.
McCain's utterance of that statement shows how quickly he made up with Bush and how willingly he was in whoring for the war in Iraq.

Original Text Uncovered on Birth Certificate
"This follow up report ... is about to reveal enough proof, beyond any doubt, that the KOS COLB is a digitally modified forgery and was based on another individual’s post-2006 COLB.
Another follow up report will reveal exactly who the original underlying COLB did belong to. Trust me when I tell you it is going to be one hell of a major twist that no one would have seen coming.
That said, and in the interest of fairness, if the people responsible for forging the COLB come forward and admit their liability the name of the original COLB owner will not be released publicly.
As a heads up to the guilty parties – the names and dates have already been restored – as has the fact the owner is a female born in the 70’s.
... there were enough artifacts left to reconstruct most of the underlying image."

I just finished The New Yorker story on California medical marijuana from last week's magazine. What an ordeal for the dispensary owners as they face harsh invasions and seizures from LAPD and the feds, while the state licenses the very same businesses.
A bit of anxiety? Pay a doc a couple hundred for a letter saying so and you are able to "legally" buy many different strains to cure what ails ya.
The story is quite a read, BTW, chronicling some of the players in this soap opera. I learned a lot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am sick of McCain's stupid campaign strategy, mentioning Obama's "weaknesses" instead of explaining his policy ideas. The conservative David Brooks, an original "Straight Talk Express" enthusiast, explained why he , Brooks, disagreed with this, but it was the only way McCain can get mentioned on any newscast.
Brooks was on with Shieffer this morning.
Stephanopulous had a great show this morning, very civil discussion...Gwen Ifil was most interesting.
KGC - just for that, you have to give me directions to the place on Westside Rd - this Tomato Heaven. That sounds like my kind of place. Is it open for the usual hours? I'm not sure the Bruins name is a type of tomato - I thought it was maybe from a particular farm. Whatever.
The new Bob's Truck doesn't have as much as the old one did, but everything is organic and they are open throughout the year. Of course in season they have crab and even clam chowder, etc.
Champ - I doubt you can be convinced on the topic of cell phones on planes, but I do have two thoughts to add .
For one thing, confronting a cell-phone-abuser in the manner you suggest amounts to taunting in my opinion. Just as in this blog, that kind of thing gives rise to arguing and probably fighting. Here, you guys are parted by distance - on a plane with no where to go, the fight will stay there.
As it is, drunks and other disagreeable folks create danger. When a cell-phone-abuse argument breaks out, flight attendants just might be able to stop it. People on an airplane are a captive audience - they have little physical freedom or ability to defend themselves.
In addition, you say that people aren't forced to board the plane, and if they don't want to hear others talking on cell phones they don't have to get on planes - even if it means changing jobs to avoid flying.
The opposite scenario is also true. People who just have to talk on their cell phones don't have to board planes, either. As it is, they know the rules in play today
Rather than requiring people to change jobs in order to allow a small group top use their cell phones.on planes, why not expect that people who know they'll be incommunicado for several hours will prepare for that eventuality?
Majority rules is the usual in a democracy, but minority rights are also to be protected. In this case, the minority right is the right to disturb and endanger the majority simply so that the minority can indulge their casual wish to talk. If they absolutely need to use a phone, they should have no trouble doing so before they board. Do you stay off planes because there might be a crying baby on it?
As for the pe classes in schools, Richard Simmons testified in front of Congress several weeks ago to put pe back in schools. Dropping pe and art and music from public schools has been going on for years.
One of the best promises I heard during the primaries was from Huckabee, of all people . He is dedicated to bringing back those same subjects to education - he said it several times and not one reporter or other candidate took it further. It's such a common sense idea but isn't flamboyant or thrilling.
As for the pe classes in schools, Richard Simmons testified in front of Congress several weeks ago to put pe back in schools. Dropping pe and art and music from public schools has been going on for years.
I googled Richard and there is a you tube link to his testimony. I don't know how to show the link but it's easy to find under his name. I wondered if he is starting a campaign about it. I'd like to see this issue get more coverage.
Yes, Champ, I know you are most concerned tih the idea of Congress getting involved, but Congress is in charge of transportation security, and to me this is a security issue, with manners coming a far second. So Congress can go ahead for my money. As usual, just from my point of view, my opinion.
Clinton Embraces Return to Ambassador Role
After the Bitter Primaries, He Calls Charity 'My Life'
"Obama might be helped, Clinton said, "in some debate when he can say, 'You know, a captain I met in Iraq said this to me,' or, 'I observed this in Afghanistan' -- and I don't mean in a phony, showy way. I mean you want your president to have a feel for this. . . . It's like everything else. You just learn it. You absorb it, so every time you do it, your comfort level goes up."
Chloe,
Really good Clinton quote from the article you posted above.
""What we Democrats can't afford to do, even as we support Senator Obama, is try to build one America on the cheap," Clinton said, explaining that people could not tell themselves, " 'I voted across the racial divide; I have no obligations to do something in my community or around the world.' In other words, if he wins . . . we've still got a lot of problems. We've got to heave-to here. We've got to show up."
Sorry didn't mean to ignore your question. I do however try to ignore Arnie. I think it's theater and while I think the Press Democrat usually sucks I think they did get this right
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger portrayed his order slashing the pay of 200,000 state workers as a stopgap effort to ensure that the state has enough money to pay its bills. Of course, the state payroll is perhaps the largest of those bills.
But acknowledging that might peel away some of the peek-a-boo plumes of the budget fan dance that mask inaction by the self-styled action governor and the tanned, rested and ready-for-action Legislature, which returns from vacation Monday.
Schwarzenegger needlessly caused fear and insecurity for state workers and their families with an executive order reducing salaries to the federal minimum wage of $6.55 an hour pending resolution of the budget mess.
He also eliminated 10,300 part-time and temporary jobs that, in fairness, may have been lost to the state's $15.2 billion budget gap anyway.
State Controller John Chiang said he will continue paying full salaries to state employees, setting the stage for a court fight.
Much is being lost in translation.
Essentially the reports of large numbers of civilian casualties are true. Even years later we were prepared to shoot into the ranks of civilian hostages if we thought they were shielding advancing enemy _if_ what we were defending was of exceptional importance.
Although there are radical elements within Korean society, they are the exception. Most Koreans understand that the civilian casualties were the consequences of war. They are also deeply appreciative of the sacrifices Americans made in liberating them from the Japanese, and in defending the peninsula from the North.
If you wanted to see an unappreciative, deeply hostile population reacting angrily to American soldiers, all you'd have to do is look to how many of my fellow citizens treating returning Vietnam veterans in my cohort; much worse than anything that I experienced in Korea.
There is nothing to fear in an honest exploration of how civilian casualties occurred in Korea.
Flatus,
The Koreans I know, I like. I have a Korean nephew for what that's worth.
My anger stems from the fact that as many American soldiers died in Korea as did during the entire Vietnam war...That's 3 years versus 12? There was a temperature swing of over 100 degrees that our soldiers fought and died in.
I suspect that were I a soldier, I too would have adopted a "kill em all" mentality to keep myself alive.
We were fighting for them to preserve their freedom from the Communists to the North and now, because some civilians were killed, they are talking @#$#$ reparations?
For starters, they should get to the back of the line. Second, if the government paid them a @#$# nickel I would be incensed to no end because what value does that place on our dead soldiers? Were they successful, how much in reparations would the country of Iraq demand?
Viv & Corey - this might be too far into the night for you to get the response but I'll try. KGC will be much more knowledgeable about this.
I haven't heard any details, but it so far doesn't sound as if "salaried" people are affected. The protesters outside had a sign with Arnie's salary posted =
$212,000. Of course, he doesn't need it. That's what makes me think it's just one step in shifting the blame.
The editorial KGC copied from our local paper does a good job of stating the situation. Arnie was elected to take the place of a recalled gov, Grey Davis, who took it in the neck because he wanted to triple the car tax for one year to help with the budget deficit. People were outraged.
So Arnie was gonna fix it, and 6 or so years later, his suggestion is to cut employees wages to minimum wage, and get rid of temps, who were gonna go anyway.
Ergo, the owners of lexus and infinit's will be safe, but wage owners are supposed to adjust to minimum wage.
I think it's like playing chicken. I hope Arnie loses because he's rather self-satisified. He's a good reason why I take the un-liberal stance that it's too soon to change the natural-born citizen requirement for a president. He seems to think this is all a game.
Hopefully, the courts will use some brains.
Once again, just my opinion.
EuroTom,
Geez. I wasn't implying that people who are overweight are undisciplined.
Isn't it possible for both to be true? People are disciplined who work hard to
exercise and eat vegs and fruit. And yet, people who are overweight may
be disciplined too, yet not be able to lose weight.
Sorry if you thought I was implying anything against those who fight their weight problems. Most everyone I know struggles with weight issues (me too) and most of them are disciplined and serious people.
And as far as what I wrote about Obama and his possible smoking and his weight. I was referring to an earlier post I wrote that implied I thought Obama was healthy and disciplined if he managed to stay slim. However, I clarified
my point later, after Patsi reminded me that Obama may be a smoker, still.
What I was trying to say, in a clumsy way, was that smoking often helps people to stay thin, yet we all know smoking is extremely unhealthy.
So, being thin doesn't necessarily mean someone is healthy especially
if they smoke.
