  1. The campaign is turning into a couple of brats fighting back and forth on a daily basis.

Obama seems to think he needs to quickly respond to every single thing said about him. This is a big mistake. Respond to the big stuff or you just play into the Gop (avoid the issues) strategy.

  3. The advertising industry must love it. The politics of change is really expensive. Who says there's no such thing as too much money. And besides, Townhalls are way too revealing. No place to hide when you're face to face with the people.

Anthrax scientist commits suicide as FBI closes in

A top U.S. biodefense researcher apparently committed suicide just as the Justice Department was about to file criminal charges against him in the anthrax mailings that traumatized the nation in the weeks following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to a published report.

  4. Oregon,
Since I see you''re here this morning, I'd like to thank you for the 'Knucklehead list of rules'. One to live by. Thanks.

    Now I must make coffee.

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | August 1, 2008 6:19 AM

  5. Chloe..I think I'll make coffee too. I went to the midnight opening of the new Mummy movie. Lots of fun. Brenden Frasier always seems like a big kid having fun in his movies. I was surprised so many people were there..familieswith small kids..surprised me.

The knothead list works for me. There are a lot of interesting people here and I want to concentrate on them. I likie the term, knucklehead" also.

  6. "Brenden Frasier always seems like a big kid having fun in his movies."

That's what I love about Brenden Frasier too!.

I was looking forward to 'Swing Vote' with Kevin Costner' this weekend. The previews looked so funny. It's supposed to open today, but I don't see it on the schedule yet.

  7. Good Morning, Chloe and Oregon Democrat,

Wow. These two, less than fascinating candidates, have spent over 48 million on ads so far. And what has all that moola accomplished?

Posted by: prof marcia Author Profile Page | August 1, 2008 6:37 AM

  8. "And what has all that moola accomplished?"

    Good Morning Marcia,
That's a good question. It feels like we're right back where we started. Did you see the developing story on Drudge this morning:

McCain accuses Obama of playing politics with race

    http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9297USO0&show_article=1

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | August 1, 2008 6:43 AM

  9. Hello Marcia

Chloe..Swing Vote was also opening at midnight. Kevin Costner is usually so laid back, I was afraid I would fall asleep at a late showing.

both movies open today with wide distribution.

I watching Morning Joe..I'm not usually up at this time.
The Mike/Joe spat session is not very appealing.

  10. Regarding the "Race Card":
Of course, Obama's comment was "The" race card. I'm a Black Democrat and I recognize it clearly. Quick Observations: (a) Why didn't/hasn't the predominately white media recognized and acknowledged it for what it is, was and has been? If the McCain camp had indeed said something so blatant, the outcry would have been deafening. (b) It was a brilliant pre-emptive strike by the McCain campaign to assure that they will not be race-boated by the Obama campaign has was done so effectively against the Clintons. Not only has a marker been officially-for-the-record established as to when race was introduced into the GE campaign but by whom, but another bridge has been offered to the Clinton enthusiasts -- "see, they tried to do it to us, too!".

Posted by: John Hogue | August 1, 2008 6:52 AM

  11. Oregon, I didn't think you were usually up so early.

I just read a review on the NYT and they aren't raving about the movie, but I'm still looking forward to seeing it. They describe it as: This Guy’s for You “Swing Vote” is about life, liberty and the pursuit of Budweiser.

Now I have to feed my critters. They're complaining early today.

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | August 1, 2008 6:56 AM

  12. My displeasure with Obama is rooted in:

    1. His disrespect to the President Clinton years
    2. His dismissive, disrespectful attitude toward Senator Clinton
    3. A total lack of humility

We need to win this election. Barack Obama is not a good bet.

  14. Hillary has apparently asked that she not be nominated for President at Democratic convention.

NY Daily News reports that a source close to Hillary confirms that she won't file a formal request to the convention asking to be nominated for President.

    http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2008/07/31/2008-07-31_hillary_clinton_asks_not_to_be_nominated.html

Party rules require that a written request to be nominated must be submitted, as well as a petition signed by at least 300 delegates--without her signed request, petitions of support are meaningless.

Although delegates may vote for whomever they want during the roll call, the report is that Hillary (personally & through surrogates) has counseled her 1886 delegates to vote for Obama & that she may release those delegates when she speaks to the convention.

  18. While I do believe that the Obama crowd is playing "The Race Card" now and did it before to Sen. Clinton, I also believe that the McCain folks have the worst possible media advisors.

While Brittney and Paris may be two empty headed, celebritards famous for being famous, you would think the McCain folks would know that if you put two blond females in an anti-Obama ad that the "racist" charges would be the immediate fall out.. Haven't they been paying attention to their viral emails?

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | August 1, 2008 7:31 AM

  19. Oh Patsi, I see you've got your idiot hat on early. Obama simply stated how the McCain campaign was going to define him. And guess what? He's right, just like how dumb the Clinton campaign was when they decided to make the Barack "remember Jesse Jackson won South Carolina" Obama comment. But since you have little understanding about how race works in this country, you obviously don't know what you're talking about. See Obama is smart enough to not get the "you needed that job" white hands treatment that Harvey Gantt received in NC, or the blonde "Call me" bimbo treatment your beloved Harold Ford, Jr. received in Tennessee, or the classic "Willie Horton" treatment that Dukakis received during his campaign. Better to attack than to sit back passively, as you'd like a candidate to do.

  22. Alpha Omega Obama house has pledged a new sorority sister. Gene Robinson. Looks like Meeker handed over the house paddle to Schuster. No, saying that BO would rather lose a war if it means he can win a campaign doesn’t say that he’s unpatriotic or un-American so much as it says that he is so self-serving that he would make poor choices.

MoJo’s the only one with any common sense in that studio today. BO is incredibly famous without having produced anything yet; that’s the correlation between him, Britney & Paris. Where do they get off saying it’s a juxtaposition of races?

That’s exactly what the BO campaign wants. BO can’t throw a temper tantrum, so he tries to play that card, again. (And to think, I had big hopes for this guy six months ago.) The race card. It’s the temper tantrum of 2008.

However, these are just more distractions. I’m pining for some meat-n-potatoes debates, but all the media serves up is doughy Wonder bread that constipates the political process and has little nutrional value.

This Wal-Mart story is disturbing on so many levels.

In recent weeks, thousands of Wal-Mart store managers and department heads have been summoned to mandatory meetings at which the retailer stresses the downside for workers if stores were to be unionized.”

I think unions are just the boogey-man; their real concern is raising of the minimum wage. They also benefit from high gas prices and outsourcing manufacturing jobs which force folks to shop there & run alternative stores out of business. To paraphrase Tennessee Ernie Ford’s song, we’re gonna owe our souls to the company store.

  26. But if they'd used two young black singers -- or that black airhead on The View -- they'd have been called even more racist. Face it -- anything now is going to be called racist. When trying to give LBJ some credit for Civil Rights legislation became a racist issue, it was all over.

But what surprised me was the effect that Ludicrous song is having. I figured nobody but a few around her (like me) would get PO'd because of the continuing Hillary/bitch theme. But I was talking to a guy who travels and meets a lot of blue collar workers in various cities....last night he told me in the past several days there's been a great deal of talk about this song, and partly because of the McCain/paralyzed line. Obama was smart to quickly disassociate himself with that one.

Unfortunately, a large share of the world’s population is not responding to high energy prices. Across the developing world, governments are subsidizing energy, blunting the incentive to conserve by keeping prices low. They are absorbing the savings made by industrial countries and helping to raise oil prices by stoking demand.

Jamie: Stop with the dumb comparisons. There's a narrative that the McCain campaign is building and it's about feeding into the racial biases Americans have about African Americans. Not deserving. Arrogant. Presumptive. Who does he think he is? Americans are not used to African Americans who make no apologies for competing on traditionally 100 percent white turf and beating you. And whatever the field, there's always blowback. Remember when Tiger started winning and Fuzzy Zoeller decided to go over a menu of fried chicken and collard greens? He must be in his late 70's or early 80's now. Very well known jazz musician photographer. All his images were made in the late 50's in NYC when he was working as a advertising photog in the village. He told me that he had a studio that he would turn into a jazz club and he would invite the musicians to his studio in the daytime when they were playing at night so he could make his images. That is apples and oranges. If Tiger had been a white golfer, he would still be one of the greatest golfers who ever played the game. The Zoeller comment WAS racist and stupid.

If Barack Obama were white with his experience, he wouldn't have gotten the speech at the last convention and he certainly wouldn't have been running for President. In this case being black is actually working in his favor because it brings him to the attention of power brokers who wouldn't have backed him for at least another four to eight years.

This doesn't mean that he can't handle the job. It just means it wouldn't have been offered it in the first place if he had been white. Even with her charitable, international, and senatorial experience you could make a case that being a woman benefitted Sen. Clinton.

Marcia, it may have been before your time here, but just FYI, Mr. Democrat used to go under the moniker Bye Bye Billary, but dropped that to try and be less antagonistic toward Hillary supporters after Obama clinched the nomination. As you can see, the only thing that changed was the name. MD, stupid and blind are two things yoou seem to be familiar with, but misapply to some of the more intelligent and thoughtful posters here regularly. I guess you've been staring into the light too long.

Patsi, you said in your 7:47 comment the same thing I said to Mrs. P this morning while we were watching MoJo pointing out that the McSame campaign has not raised race as an issue thus far, so Obama did instead.

Anyone catch Axelrod trying to defend Obama's comments on MoJo this morning? It was clear that even he wasn't buying what he was trying to sell. Folks, the wheels are starteing to come off the train, and trying to stand on celebrity instead of going head to head with McOldfart is not helping Obama. It's just my opinion, but I attribute the falling lead reflected in the Gallup daily (now down to 1%) to the world tour and the appearance that Obama won't engage McNN directly. Berlin may have been a very gratifying stop for Barack, but it isn't helping him here. Get a grip, agree to debates, and spend your time campaigning in the US - or get used to the sound of President McCain.

  73. Patd,

The 15th amendment theoretically gave African Americans the right to vote. However, after Reconstruction, African Americans were effectively disinfranchised. And while white women didn't get the vote until the 20th Century, it could be argued that theoretically, their husbands cast a vote for their interests. Black women couldn't say the same as when the black man lost the vote, the whole black family was unrepresented.

Patsi: I don't hope to enlighten thickheaded people.

Jamie: You say that about Tiger now, but the same arguments used against Tiger (who does he think he is? Too young. Arrogant without having won yet. Overrated.) where said about him when he first got on the tour. You have the gift of hindsight to know that Tiger fulfilled his potential.

And you're using the classic trick of condemning the obvious as being racist and stupid, mainly because it's easy to do right now, but ignoring the contemporary equivalents because that's much harder to do and your interests might be tied to those interests.

And your notion that Barack only spoke at the Dem convention because of his color is as demeaning as saying that he wouldn't have gotten into Harvard without his race. What quantitative analysis do you have that says this is true? And if you make slippery slope accusations like that, then it is fair game to say that without Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton would not have the accomplishments she has now.

It was a response to Mr. D. and means exactly what it says. If Barack Obama were a white Senator who had limited Senatorial experience, no international experience, no important legislation on which he led, no real state level experience because of jumping from one position to another etc., then he would not be considered a serious Presidential contender for at least another four to eight years.

He never would have been given that prime time speaking spot four years ago that started him on his Presidential campaign in his very first year in the Senate.

It doesn't take a thing away from his brilliance or capacity to do the job to say, no one would have taken him seriously for several more years if he hadn't been black. Being black got his foot in the door. Now he needs to prove he can do the job.

He is very fortunate that the Republicans are running John McCain who has no business being anywhere near the oval office.

I may be wrong, but I think there is a winning argument in the drilling issue - couched in the unused leases and lack of development of alternatives. If a died in the wool oilman and arch concerservative like TBoone can make the argument that drilling is not the answer to energy independence, although it is part of the answer, surely the Dems can make the same argument and move it down the list of approaches to address the problem instead of putting it at the top as Dumya and McCain are doing. I know it takes more than a sounjdbite to make the argument, and soundbites are what generally win elections, but jesus h. christ...

The remark about the fried chicken was made after he won the Masters. You don't get a green jacked without being able to play. Again, you are making comparisons that have nothing to do with the issue.

Now eight years from now if we are fortunate and President Obama does a magnificent job, you can say, "once upon a time they called him inexperienced and arrogant".

If Senator Obama had actually done the job of being senator for one term, I wouldn't be calling him inexperienced now, but he didn't. He set up an exploratory group before he had even been in the Senate a year.

  89. Jamie,

You are proving my points better than I could ever. Your backhanded acknowledgment of Barack's brilliance and intelligence is tempered by saying that none of that matters because he could only have gotten the opportunity because of his skin color. You've just identified why racists think the way they do. It is literally impossible for them to think that the brilliance and intelligence were enough to move him over other, but instead, they have to go to the irrational thought that race was used as an advantage. Thanks for the post. It's a wonderful cut and paste explanation of how many people think about African Americans and their accomplishments.

What TBoone actually said was drilling is not the only answer, as he is in favor of all methods to produce energy, including drilling. He is really big into solar and wind. TBoone thinks the mid-west is the best place for wind, west coast for solar. I don't see any problem with either one of them, but since the mid west is prone to tornadoes, what happens when one of these wind farm is leveled by a tornado?

  97. "Are you saying that he was picked to speak only because the color of his skin? And not for his beliefs? Or his ability to communicate and inspire?"

    UB,

There are excellent speakers in the Senate. There are excellent speakers in the Democratic pary. There are several people who share the same ideals and can communicate those ideas in an inspirational way.

I am saying that as a virtual unknown on the national stage, he would not have been given such a prominent role if the party didn't want to use him as an example of the "big tent open to all races" theme. His natural gifts combined with his color are what put him in the forefront of images the party wanted to project.

Obama's speech was very successful and put him on the road to the Presidential campaign. I don't know if you remember the disaster of Clinton's speech in similar circumstances when the party wanted a "Southern" strategy image. He really had to crawl back from that with a successful stretch as head of the Governor's association to get back on the Presidential trail.

Opportunites come about for all sorts of reasons. Sen. Obama has married his natural talents to the unique image of being half black in order to attract the attention necessary to run for president.

  103. md, not a golfer? The rap on Tiger was that he signed $60M in endorsement contracts before winning a professional tournament - and that lasted for 3 months after he turned pro. He had won more amateur tournaments and had been the youngest and only multiple U.S. Amateur (3 times) winner in history, and the year before he turned pro was the only amateur to make the cut in the Masters, was the leading amateur at the British Open and won the NCAA individual championship. The questions surrounding Tiger when he turned pro were about money and whether the Tiger brand would justify Nike and Titleist's confidence in his abilities, his talent and place on the tour was not questioned by anyone who followed golf. In less than a year he rose to No. 1, silencing the skeptics. While Tiger enjoyed celebrity early in his career, celebrity never made a long putt or won a golf tournament.

There is no comparison between Tiger Woods and Barack Obama in their respective fields.

Perhpas it is poor information management on the part of the democrats but that are getting tagged as obstructing energy independence.

Of course we have to develop alternative energy sources. A big breakthrough would be nice, but doesn't seem to something we can depend on. so mixed energy sources are our future for now. Wind is good, but it doesn't always blow, Sun is good but it doesn't always shine. To me it makes sense to explore for more domestically produced oil. And the arguement that it won't help for ten years seems foolish. Why wait? If we wait we just delay the availability of what is found.

I think electric vehicles are a good idea, but the batteries are a problem and it seems that the electrical grid would have to be expanded dramatically to accomodate recharging millions of vehicles every night.

Everyone must recall that BHO is only half black, but BHO has decided to portray himself as Afro-American. And it is for that reason alone that he has garnered 92% of the Afro-American vote. You have to wonder how many of those Afro-Americans would be supporting him in such large number if BHO would have said, I am a product of a mixed racial marriage, so I do not consider myself to be black or white. Or better yet taken a page out of Tiger Woods book when asked how does it feel to be the first Afro-American to win the Masters. Tiger replied, I do not consider myself to be Afro-American, to do so would show disrespect to my mother who is not Afro-American. It is BHO who keeps reminding us that he is a different color, it is BHO who keeps us informed that he is the first Afro-American to be nominated(?) by the D party to run for POTUS. BHO likes to bring race into the equation when it best suits him. If BHO was ice cream he be selling himself as a pure chocolate milk shake, the truth is he is a black and white shake. BHO has been playing the race all along, and when he thinks no one is paying attention he'll slip that card in from the bottom of the deck.

Obama says the rebate would be financed with a windfall profits tax on the oil industry.

"This rebate will be enough to offset the increased cost of gas for a working family over the next four months," Obama said in remarks prepared for delivery Friday at a town hall meeting in the crucial swing state of Florida.

Obama had earlier said the rebates should be part of a larger tax relief package. But now he says the slumping economy demands they be put in place immediately.

Obama's remarks coincide with the release of the latest unemployment figures, which show 51,000 jobs lost last month."

Let's keep the record straight---To be accurate, Fuzzy Zoeller made his remarks just after finishing his final Masters round, having scored very poorly and before Tiger had actually won the tournament.

But the rest of the story is being excluded, unlike some here, Tiger Woods accepted Fuzzy Zoeller's apology for his remarks.

"At first I was shocked to hear that Fuzzy Zoeller made those unfortunate remarks. His attempt at humor was out of bounds, and I was disappointed by it. But having played golf with Fuzzy, I know he is a jokester, and I have concluded that no personal animosity toward me was intended. ...I know he feels badly about the remarks. We all make mistakes and it's time to move on."

And, yes, I have been known to play a bit of golf, & even been lucky enough to score a hole in one (and not with a Calloway).

  137. And if you haven't noticed MD is busy turning friends into enemies.

Do you have no skills in this department? Is everyone equally a "friend" to you? To Patsi?

  139. Jamie...your comment below
"Even with her charitable, international, and senatorial experience you could make a case that being a woman benefitted Sen. Clinton."

I'd be interested in reading your making this case and not that being a woman actually hurt Hillary,
I don't think you can make this case so "iron my shirts sweetie".

  140. jamie,

"John Kerry picked Edwards as his running mate because he was white? "

"No I think he picked him because he needed an attractive Southerner to balance the ticket."

Not sure that Kerry picked Edwards, as Kerry always thought Edwards was pretty much a light weight. It is thought the DNC told Kerry he will have Edwards as his VP. Kerry now must be thinking maybe losing was a sign of things to come. What would be the story today had he won and this story about Edwards had surfaced?

  141. I think so much money has been spent and the campaigns have been so long the public is numb to amounts. I don't get why Obama is resisting making joint appearances with McCain. The conventional wisdom is the contrast would work in Obama's favor.

  142. I don't think that being a woman hurt Hillary Clinton this primary. I think it helped her.

Being Hillary Clinton was the problem. She's polarizing.

  143. John McCain ad irritates many in Hollywood

Just for a start, industry types say the ad is wrong: In the Hollywood lexicon, Obama is not a celebrity. He's a rock star. (Note to McCain strategists: That's the difference between Jessica Simpson and Bono.)

  144. KGC: I agree with you on the joint appearances. I think Obama could do really well. (And I have a healthy respect for McCain's talent at public appearances. It's not a slam dunk for either of them. Never underestimate either.)

    Well that is good news!

  146. Obama doesn't want to do to the town hall meetings with McCain because he wants to save the full impact of the contrast till all America is watching, the real debates.

  147. I hope they do appearances beyond debates, which I often find dreary. Town halls are way more interesting, assuming you get a Jim Lehrer type to moderate.

  149. Obama is staying on track with his campaign, and doing what he thinks he has to do to win the GE. I always find it amusing when people question, why one candidate isn't doing what their opponent asks of them.....

McCain is putting out the tackiest ads, almost like local cable ads....Is that the best he can do? I think it is. I can't imagine McCain gang sitting around saying, " this sucks, let's use it."

  150. "there are pricks in all sorts of occupations"

Definitely true! Usually the ones who were the worst were in from LA...they looked down on any photographer from Nashville and made all kinds of disparaging remarks. Henry Diltz was the opposite. He hung out with some local photogs, admired their work -- treated them with respect. I really liked him for that.

  151. this will be good I bet -

A soundtrack CD with songs dedicated to Obama is in the works (think of all that musical hope available for download to your iPod.)

You do realize the like of ...

    Tom Selleck
    Bo Derek
    Shannon Doherty
    Clint Eastwood
    Arnold
    Patricia Heaton
    Chuck Norris
    Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
    Bruce Willis
    Heather Locklear
and every jingoistic Pro Wrestler, including the Iron Sheik are Republicans and would take exception to your hateful remark? lol

  153. http://webcenters.netscape.compuserve.com/celebrity/becksmith.jsp?p=ce_bsf_143

Country music stars, of course, are less reticent. Brooks & Dunn, Lee Ann Womack and the Gatlin Brothers all support Bush. And a few other celebrities are in Bush's corner, if not exactly speaking out on the President's behalf: Bruce Willis, Kid Rock, Kelsey Grammer, Alice Cooper and Britney Spears.

A few years ago, James Woods told Jay Leno he "loves" Dubya and was proud to have voted for him, and Danny Aiello has also been an unabashed Republican. It wasn't so long ago that Michael Moore's Oscar acceptance speech drew audible boos from some of the Hollywood rank-and-file. But at the moment, the Hollywood chorus of conservatives remains comparatively quiet.

Meanwhile, as the campaign has heated up, several news outlets have attempted to "out" Hollywood Republicans, including Details magazine. In a recent issue, Details named a few celebrities who are admitted conservatives, such as Jessica Simpson and Shannen Doherty, and a few surprises, such as Adam Sandler and Freddie Prinze Jr. Prinze's wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar, has expressed right-wing leanings in the past.
