The campaign is turning into a couple of brats fighting back and forth on a daily basis.
Obama seems to think he needs to quickly respond to every single thing said about him. This is a big mistake. Respond to the big stuff or you just play into the Gop (avoid the issues) strategy.

The advertising industry must love it. The politics of change is really expensive. Who says there's no such thing as too much money. And besides, Townhalls are way too revealing. No place to hide when you're face to face with the people.
Anthrax scientist commits suicide as FBI closes in
A top U.S. biodefense researcher apparently committed suicide just as the Justice Department was about to file criminal charges against him in the anthrax mailings that traumatized the nation in the weeks following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to a published report.

Oregon,
Since I see you''re here this morning, I'd like to thank you for the 'Knucklehead list of rules'. One to live by. Thanks.
Now I must make coffee.

Chloe..I think I'll make coffee too. I went to the midnight opening of the new Mummy movie. Lots of fun. Brenden Frasier always seems like a big kid having fun in his movies. I was surprised so many people were there..familieswith small kids..surprised me.
The knothead list works for me. There are a lot of interesting people here and I want to concentrate on them. I likie the term, knucklehead" also.

"Brenden Frasier always seems like a big kid having fun in his movies."
That's what I love about Brenden Frasier too!.
I was looking forward to 'Swing Vote' with Kevin Costner' this weekend. The previews looked so funny. It's supposed to open today, but I don't see it on the schedule yet.

Good Morning, Chloe and Oregon Democrat,
Wow. These two, less than fascinating candidates, have spent over 48 million on ads so far. And what has all that moola accomplished?

"And what has all that moola accomplished?"
Good Morning Marcia,
That's a good question. It feels like we're right back where we started. Did you see the developing story on Drudge this morning:
McCain accuses Obama of playing politics with race

Hello Marcia
Chloe..Swing Vote was also opening at midnight. Kevin Costner is usually so laid back, I was afraid I would fall asleep at a late showing.
both movies open today with wide distribution.
I watching Morning Joe..I'm not usually up at this time.
The Mike/Joe spat session is not very appealing.

Regarding the "Race Card":
Of course, Obama's comment was "The" race card. I'm a Black Democrat and I recognize it clearly. Quick Observations: (a) Why didn't/hasn't the predominately white media recognized and acknowledged it for what it is, was and has been? If the McCain camp had indeed said something so blatant, the outcry would have been deafening. (b) It was a brilliant pre-emptive strike by the McCain campaign to assure that they will not be race-boated by the Obama campaign has was done so effectively against the Clintons. Not only has a marker been officially-for-the-record established as to when race was introduced into the GE campaign but by whom, but another bridge has been offered to the Clinton enthusiasts -- "see, they tried to do it to us, too!".
Posted by: John Hogue | August 1, 2008 6:52 AM
Oregon, I didn't think you were usually up so early.
I just read a review on the NYT and they aren't raving about the movie, but I'm still looking forward to seeing it. They describe it as: This Guy’s for You “Swing Vote” is about life, liberty and the pursuit of Budweiser.
Now I have to feed my critters. They're complaining early today.
Posted by: chloe
| August 1, 2008 6:56 AM
My displeasure with Obama is rooted in:
1. His disrespect to the President Clinton years
2. His dismissive, disrespectful attitude toward Senator Clinton
3. A total lack of humility
We need to win this election. Barack Obama is not a good bet.

Hillary has apparently asked that she not be nominated for President at Democratic convention.
NY Daily News reports that a source close to Hillary confirms that she won't file a formal request to the convention asking to be nominated for President.
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2008/07/31/2008-07-31_hillary_clinton_asks_not_to_be_nominated.html
Party rules require that a written request to be nominated must be submitted, as well as a petition signed by at least 300 delegates--without her signed request, petitions of support are meaningless.
Although delegates may vote for whomever they want during the roll call, the report is that Hillary (personally & through surrogates) has counseled her 1886 delegates to vote for Obama & that she may release those delegates when she speaks to the convention.

While I do believe that the Obama crowd is playing "The Race Card" now and did it before to Sen. Clinton, I also believe that the McCain folks have the worst possible media advisors.
While Brittney and Paris may be two empty headed, celebritards famous for being famous, you would think the McCain folks would know that if you put two blond females in an anti-Obama ad that the "racist" charges would be the immediate fall out.. Haven't they been paying attention to their viral emails?

Oh Patsi, I see you've got your idiot hat on early. Obama simply stated how the McCain campaign was going to define him. And guess what? He's right, just like how dumb the Clinton campaign was when they decided to make the Barack "remember Jesse Jackson won South Carolina" Obama comment. But since you have little understanding about how race works in this country, you obviously don't know what you're talking about. See Obama is smart enough to not get the "you needed that job" white hands treatment that Harvey Gantt received in NC, or the blonde "Call me" bimbo treatment your beloved Harold Ford, Jr. received in Tennessee, or the classic "Willie Horton" treatment that Dukakis received during his campaign. Better to attack than to sit back passively, as you'd like a candidate to do.

Alpha Omega Obama house has pledged a new sorority sister. Gene Robinson. Looks like Meeker handed over the house paddle to Schuster. No, saying that BO would rather lose a war if it means he can win a campaign doesn’t say that he’s unpatriotic or un-American so much as it says that he is so self-serving that he would make poor choices.
MoJo’s the only one with any common sense in that studio today. BO is incredibly famous without having produced anything yet; that’s the correlation between him, Britney & Paris. Where do they get off saying it’s a juxtaposition of races?
That’s exactly what the BO campaign wants. BO can’t throw a temper tantrum, so he tries to play that card, again. (And to think, I had big hopes for this guy six months ago.) The race card. It’s the temper tantrum of 2008.
However, these are just more distractions. I’m pining for some meat-n-potatoes debates, but all the media serves up is doughy Wonder bread that constipates the political process and has little nutrional value.
This Wal-Mart story is disturbing on so many levels.
“
In recent weeks, thousands of Wal-Mart store managers and department heads have been summoned to mandatory meetings at which the retailer stresses the downside for workers if stores were to be unionized.”
I think unions are just the boogey-man; their real concern is raising of the minimum wage. They also benefit from high gas prices and outsourcing manufacturing jobs which force folks to shop there & run alternative stores out of business. To paraphrase Tennessee Ernie Ford’s song, we’re gonna owe our souls to the company store.

But if they'd used two young black singers -- or that black airhead on The View -- they'd have been called even more racist. Face it -- anything now is going to be called racist. When trying to give LBJ some credit for Civil Rights legislation became a racist issue, it was all over.
But what surprised me was the effect that Ludicrous song is having. I figured nobody but a few around her (like me) would get PO'd because of the continuing Hillary/bitch theme. But I was talking to a guy who travels and meets a lot of blue collar workers in various cities....last night he told me in the past several days there's been a great deal of talk about this song, and partly because of the McCain/paralyzed line. Obama was smart to quickly disassociate himself with that one.

The Cost of Oil Subsidies
Unfortunately, a large share of the world’s population is not responding to high energy prices. Across the developing world, governments are subsidizing energy, blunting the incentive to conserve by keeping prices low. They are absorbing the savings made by industrial countries and helping to raise oil prices by stoking demand.

Jamie: Stop with the dumb comparisons. There's a narrative that the McCain campaign is building and it's about feeding into the racial biases Americans have about African Americans. Not deserving. Arrogant. Presumptive. Who does he think he is? Americans are not used to African Americans who make no apologies for competing on traditionally 100 percent white turf and beating you. And whatever the field, there's always blowback. Remember when Tiger started winning and Fuzzy Zoeller decided to go over a menu of fried chicken and collard greens? The same is happening during this campaign. But, like always, we triumph over the ignorance.

He told me that he had a studio that he would turn into a jazz club and he would invite the musicians to his studio in the daytime when they were playing at night so he could make his images. That is apples and oranges. If Tiger had been a white golfer, he would still be one of the greatest golfers who ever played the game. The Zoeller comment WAS racist and stupid.
If Barack Obama were white with his experience, he wouldn't have gotten the speech at the last convention and he certainly wouldn't have been running for President. In this case being black is actually working in his favor because it brings him to the attention of power brokers who wouldn't have backed him for at least another four to eight years.
This doesn't mean that he can't handle the job. It just means it wouldn't have been offered it in the first place if he had been white. Even with her charitable, international, and senatorial experience you could make a case that being a woman benefitted Sen. Clinton.

Mornin' all.
Marcia, it may have been before your time here, but just FYI, Mr. Democrat used to go under the moniker Bye Bye Billary, but dropped that to try and be less antagonistic toward Hillary supporters after Obama clinched the nomination. As you can see, the only thing that changed was the name. MD, stupid and blind are two things yoou seem to be familiar with, but misapply to some of the more intelligent and thoughtful posters here regularly. I guess you've been staring into the light too long.
Patsi, you said in your 7:47 comment the same thing I said to Mrs. P this morning while we were watching MoJo pointing out that the McSame campaign has not raised race as an issue thus far, so Obama did instead.
Anyone catch Axelrod trying to defend Obama's comments on MoJo this morning? It was clear that even he wasn't buying what he was trying to sell. Folks, the wheels are starteing to come off the train, and trying to stand on celebrity instead of going head to head with McOldfart is not helping Obama. It's just my opinion, but I attribute the falling lead reflected in the Gallup daily (now down to 1%) to the world tour and the appearance that Obama won't engage McNN directly. Berlin may have been a very gratifying stop for Barack, but it isn't helping him here. Get a grip, agree to debates, and spend your time campaigning in the US - or get used to the sound of President McCain.
Flatus, if you like Hogan's Heroes, and what's not to like - it has become a regular evening feature on TVLand. (Ch. 65 on Time-Warner Cable).

Patd,
The 15th amendment theoretically gave African Americans the right to vote. However, after Reconstruction, African Americans were effectively disinfranchised. And while white women didn't get the vote until the 20th Century, it could be argued that theoretically, their husbands cast a vote for their interests. Black women couldn't say the same as when the black man lost the vote, the whole black family was unrepresented.
Patsi: I don't hope to enlighten thickheaded people.
Jamie: You say that about Tiger now, but the same arguments used against Tiger (who does he think he is? Too young. Arrogant without having won yet. Overrated.) where said about him when he first got on the tour. You have the gift of hindsight to know that Tiger fulfilled his potential.
And you're using the classic trick of condemning the obvious as being racist and stupid, mainly because it's easy to do right now, but ignoring the contemporary equivalents because that's much harder to do and your interests might be tied to those interests.
And your notion that Barack only spoke at the Dem convention because of his color is as demeaning as saying that he wouldn't have gotten into Harvard without his race. What quantitative analysis do you have that says this is true? And if you make slippery slope accusations like that, then it is fair game to say that without Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton would not have the accomplishments she has now.
Posted by: Mr. Democrat | August 1, 2008 9:37 AM

I am looking forward to attending a photography opening at the Afterimage Gallery tonight over in Dallas. The opening is for a fellow named Robb Kendrick. He has been photographing working cowboys in Texas using an alternative photo method. He is making Tintypes. (the real name is wet plate colloidian) There is only one of an image and no enlargement. should be a good show here is his website pretty cool looking stuff. http://www.robbkendrick.com/

It was a response to Mr. D. and means exactly what it says. If Barack Obama were a white Senator who had limited Senatorial experience, no international experience, no important legislation on which he led, no real state level experience because of jumping from one position to another etc., then he would not be considered a serious Presidential contender for at least another four to eight years.
He never would have been given that prime time speaking spot four years ago that started him on his Presidential campaign in his very first year in the Senate.
It doesn't take a thing away from his brilliance or capacity to do the job to say, no one would have taken him seriously for several more years if he hadn't been black. Being black got his foot in the door. Now he needs to prove he can do the job.
He is very fortunate that the Republicans are running John McCain who has no business being anywhere near the oval office.

I may be wrong, but I think there is a winning argument in the drilling issue - couched in the unused leases and lack of development of alternatives. If a died in the wool oilman and arch concerservative like TBoone can make the argument that drilling is not the answer to energy independence, although it is part of the answer, surely the Dems can make the same argument and move it down the list of approaches to address the problem instead of putting it at the top as Dumya and McCain are doing. I know it takes more than a sounjdbite to make the argument, and soundbites are what generally win elections, but jesus h. christ...

Mr. D
"Jamie: You say that about Tiger now, but the same arguments used against Tiger (who does he think he is? Too young. Arrogant without having won yet. Overrated.) where said about him when he first got on the tour. You have the gift of hindsight to know that Tiger fulfilled his potential."
The remark about the fried chicken was made after he won the Masters. You don't get a green jacked without being able to play. Again, you are making comparisons that have nothing to do with the issue.
Now eight years from now if we are fortunate and President Obama does a magnificent job, you can say, "once upon a time they called him inexperienced and arrogant".
If Senator Obama had actually done the job of being senator for one term, I wouldn't be calling him inexperienced now, but he didn't. He set up an exploratory group before he had even been in the Senate a year.

Jamie,
You are proving my points better than I could ever. Your backhanded acknowledgment of Barack's brilliance and intelligence is tempered by saying that none of that matters because he could only have gotten the opportunity because of his skin color. You've just identified why racists think the way they do. It is literally impossible for them to think that the brilliance and intelligence were enough to move him over other, but instead, they have to go to the irrational thought that race was used as an advantage. Thanks for the post. It's a wonderful cut and paste explanation of how many people think about African Americans and their accomplishments.

If Hillary Clinton were not married to Bill Clinton, she would not be senator from New York. If she was not senator, she would not be a presidential candidate. If she was not related to Bill, she would not have access to his financial support network. Works both ways.
John McCain's status as naval hero smoothed his entrance into politics. It weren't his academic standing at Annapolis.
Nelson Mandela was not a professional politician. Hell, he's a jailbird.

"If a died in the wool oilman and arch concerservative like TBoone can make the argument that drilling is not the answer to energy independence,"
What TBoone actually said was drilling is not the only answer, as he is in favor of all methods to produce energy, including drilling. He is really big into solar and wind. TBoone thinks the mid-west is the best place for wind, west coast for solar. I don't see any problem with either one of them, but since the mid west is prone to tornadoes, what happens when one of these wind farm is leveled by a tornado?

"Are you saying that he was picked to speak only because the color of his skin? And not for his beliefs? Or his ability to communicate and inspire?"
UB,
There are excellent speakers in the Senate. There are excellent speakers in the Democratic pary. There are several people who share the same ideals and can communicate those ideas in an inspirational way.
I am saying that as a virtual unknown on the national stage, he would not have been given such a prominent role if the party didn't want to use him as an example of the "big tent open to all races" theme. His natural gifts combined with his color are what put him in the forefront of images the party wanted to project.
Obama's speech was very successful and put him on the road to the Presidential campaign. I don't know if you remember the disaster of Clinton's speech in similar circumstances when the party wanted a "Southern" strategy image. He really had to crawl back from that with a successful stretch as head of the Governor's association to get back on the Presidential trail.
Opportunites come about for all sorts of reasons. Sen. Obama has married his natural talents to the unique image of being half black in order to attract the attention necessary to run for president.

md, not a golfer? The rap on Tiger was that he signed $60M in endorsement contracts before winning a professional tournament - and that lasted for 3 months after he turned pro. He had won more amateur tournaments and had been the youngest and only multiple U.S. Amateur (3 times) winner in history, and the year before he turned pro was the only amateur to make the cut in the Masters, was the leading amateur at the British Open and won the NCAA individual championship. The questions surrounding Tiger when he turned pro were about money and whether the Tiger brand would justify Nike and Titleist's confidence in his abilities, his talent and place on the tour was not questioned by anyone who followed golf. In less than a year he rose to No. 1, silencing the skeptics. While Tiger enjoyed celebrity early in his career, celebrity never made a long putt or won a golf tournament.
There is no comparison between Tiger Woods and Barack Obama in their respective fields.
"Patsi, I can give you this. You've been consistently mean spirited and racist. So there's one for you. " Beautiful ByeBye. This had to come. Can't defend so you bring out the ad hominem insults. What bullshit.

I realize that this is talking to a wall, but saying that a condition exists isn't a negative.
There is nothing backhanded about saying that Barack Obama is brilliant, talented, and inspirational just because you acknowledge other conditions exist.
There is nothing racist about saying that given his limited experience, being black got those talents recognized and used sooner than they might have been otherwise.

Any kind of racial politics is not in Obama's interest. But the Obama camp can't seem to help themselves.
LOL
This morning on GMA they were bringing up OJ Simpson. Stupid.
All the Obama camp should have said was, "Obama was not referring to the McCain campaign but to the inevitable attacks that will be launched by the Republican 527's. That would have made the basic point that Republicans are racist and it stops McCain from getting on national TV and playing the indignation role.
As it is the Obama camp is starting to sound like MD. And if you haven't noticed MD is busy turning friends into enemies. not good politics.

And you keep on insisting in seeing evil where none exists. How much commentary has there been throughout this whole campaign about whoever won the nomination would be making history. It would either be a black man or a woman. Either condition is a "unique image", a special something that has never existed before in a major political party and both Obama and Clinton used those "unique images" to their advantage.

Pogo,
Perhpas it is poor information management on the part of the democrats but that are getting tagged as obstructing energy independence.
Of course we have to develop alternative energy sources. A big breakthrough would be nice, but doesn't seem to something we can depend on. so mixed energy sources are our future for now. Wind is good, but it doesn't always blow, Sun is good but it doesn't always shine. To me it makes sense to explore for more domestically produced oil. And the arguement that it won't help for ten years seems foolish. Why wait? If we wait we just delay the availability of what is found.
I think electric vehicles are a good idea, but the batteries are a problem and it seems that the electrical grid would have to be expanded dramatically to accomodate recharging millions of vehicles every night.

I sit here next to Calloway irons and King Cobra woods. Very much a golfer. The point was that for many PGA golfers (substitute politicians in Barack's case), Tiger received hype and endorsement money for his amateur career, but hadn't proven himself on the Tour (or Barack as a "state senator" and then US Senator, prior to presidential run). Once Tiger won the Masters, he was subjected to the Zoeller vitriol (which mimics the vitriol Obama receives as the nominee).

"brilliance and intelligence"
LOL there are numerous individuals who fall into that category, but who can't bring themselves to acknowledge they made a mistake, or who keep changing the rules of the game to suit their current situation. Everyone must recall that BHO is only half black, but BHO has decided to portray himself as Afro-American. And it is for that reason alone that he has garnered 92% of the Afro-American vote. You have to wonder how many of those Afro-Americans would be supporting him in such large number if BHO would have said, I am a product of a mixed racial marriage, so I do not consider myself to be black or white. Or better yet taken a page out of Tiger Woods book when asked how does it feel to be the first Afro-American to win the Masters. Tiger replied, I do not consider myself to be Afro-American, to do so would show disrespect to my mother who is not Afro-American. It is BHO who keeps reminding us that he is a different color, it is BHO who keeps us informed that he is the first Afro-American to be nominated(?) by the D party to run for POTUS. BHO likes to bring race into the equation when it best suits him. If BHO was ice cream he be selling himself as a pure chocolate milk shake, the truth is he is a black and white shake. BHO has been playing the race all along, and when he thinks no one is paying attention he'll slip that card in from the bottom of the deck.

"08-01) 07:05 PDT ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) --
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is calling for a $1,000 "emergency" rebate to consumers to offset soaring energy costs.
Obama says the rebate would be financed with a windfall profits tax on the oil industry.
"This rebate will be enough to offset the increased cost of gas for a working family over the next four months," Obama said in remarks prepared for delivery Friday at a town hall meeting in the crucial swing state of Florida.
Obama had earlier said the rebates should be part of a larger tax relief package. But now he says the slumping economy demands they be put in place immediately.
Obama's remarks coincide with the release of the latest unemployment figures, which show 51,000 jobs lost last month."

MD, Fuzzy Zoeller was more an idiot than a racist - although his advice on the choice of foods that Tiger should avoid for the Champion's dinner menu certainly didn't seem that way. You have actually picked the one thing that IMO is a valid comparison - Zoeller was mimicking Tiger's youth and inexperience, not his race, although his comments were branded racist.. "Once Tiger won the Masters, he was subjected to the Zoeller vitriol"
Let's keep the record straight---To be accurate, Fuzzy Zoeller made his remarks just after finishing his final Masters round, having scored very poorly and before Tiger had actually won the tournament.
But the rest of the story is being excluded, unlike some here, Tiger Woods accepted Fuzzy Zoeller's apology for his remarks.
"At first I was shocked to hear that Fuzzy Zoeller made those unfortunate remarks. His attempt at humor was out of bounds, and I was disappointed by it. But having played golf with Fuzzy, I know he is a jokester, and I have concluded that no personal animosity toward me was intended. ...I know he feels badly about the remarks. We all make mistakes and it's time to move on."
And, yes, I have been known to play a bit of golf, & even been lucky enough to score a hole in one (and not with a Calloway).

Country music stars, of course, are less reticent. Brooks & Dunn, Lee Ann Womack and the Gatlin Brothers all support Bush. And a few other celebrities are in Bush's corner, if not exactly speaking out on the President's behalf: Bruce Willis, Kid Rock, Kelsey Grammer, Alice Cooper and Britney Spears.
A few years ago, James Woods told Jay Leno he "loves" Dubya and was proud to have voted for him, and Danny Aiello has also been an unabashed Republican. It wasn't so long ago that Michael Moore's Oscar acceptance speech drew audible boos from some of the Hollywood rank-and-file. But at the moment, the Hollywood chorus of conservatives remains comparatively quiet.
Meanwhile, as the campaign has heated up, several news outlets have attempted to "out" Hollywood Republicans, including Details magazine. In a recent issue, Details named a few celebrities who are admitted conservatives, such as Jessica Simpson and Shannen Doherty, and a few surprises, such as Adam Sandler and Freddie Prinze Jr. Prinze's wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar, has expressed right-wing leanings in the past.

OK, folks, I'm not going to link all the bad economic news today - suffice it to say that with the exception of Chevron's profit report (which has a familiar ring to the ones reported by Exxon and Shell) there's not much good to read. GM lost more than Exxon profited. Unemployment rate at a 4 year high. Average work week fell .1 hours. I will provide one link.

"But competent executive? Surrounding herself with the best advisors? Were you around for her primary campaign? "
Can you find anywhere that I have said the above? I acknowledged a long time ago that her campaign was the pits until the end when she brought in a competent team and it was too late to save the campaign.
Misinterpret things I do say and I'll clarify, but it is impossible to defend things I've never said.

Boss Tweed,
I said that you "could" make a case that being a woman benefitted Sen. Clinton not that I actually thought it did. I believe that it cut both ways. As far as making the run in the first place, it was probably more beneficial to be the former first lady.
Being a woman cut both ways. It attracted a lot of women who saw in her someone whose talents had been put to the service of a man who now finally got a chance to shine on her own both as a Senator and as a Presidential contender. At the same time it pulled in all the disgusting chauvenistic insults and prejudices.
Unfortunately, she couldn't overcome the combination of early campaign errors and the overwhelming adulation of Senator Obama.

Ditto
Does anyone really believe Barack Obama would look like all those other presidents on the coins? It’s like I’ve said before, McCain’s people (can’t give that old senile drone credit for anything) has attacks ready for if Obama does and if Obama doesn’t. And, it doesn’t matter what that is.

Bear, for god's sake. I can't imagine how anyone can look at that jobs figure in the context of the past 6 months and the rest of the economic reports out this week and see any glass (aside from oil stocks) as half full. One little cross exam question for the schmuck - if wages rise at a rate less than that of inflation, isn't that the definition of real wages falling?

Do all of those who denigrate McCain based on his age and who use demeaning insults to that end plan on euthanizing themselves before age 65?
McCain, poor candidate? Yes.
McCain, of an advanced age? Yes.
McCain, senile? I've seen no evidence of that.
See, I don't make fun of people's age, because if I'm lucky, I'll be old too someday, ergo, those old people now are me in the future.
I believe those who use such tactics demonstrate the fear that belies their overt hubris.

champ, as for me as one who makes fun of MOldFart, I don't plan to euthanize myself when I get to be McCain's age - assuming I live that long- and don't suggest that McCain do so either, but neither do I plan to run for president when I get to be his age. McCain is old, mean, apparently uninformed on many of the important issues of the day, and more and more like Bush on policy every day. It's more fun to make fun of his age than the rest of his traits, altrhough they are sufficient IMO to justify voting against him. As I've said before, atleast for me it's not that he IS old that bothers me, it's that he ACTS old. Now get off my lawn.

In some ways it does just the opposite. If you have the impression of McCain as old, decrepid and out of touch.

WalMart was caught recruiting illegals in Mexico and smuggling them in to the US to work as night stockers and cleaning crews in more than 300 stores. This means WalMart trafficked thousands of people past Homeland Security.
These workers were directed to local food shelves for food, and to homeless shelters for housing. In cases where there was no local homeless shelter, the illegals were made to sleep on the floors.
The mccain/bush/cheney/gonzales/mukasey did not close the criminal enterprise (WalMArt) down, but allowed WalMart to fire a few management scapegoats. A new administration should make the prosecution, not the unionization, of WalMart a national security priority.

"McCain, of an advanced age? Yes."
Champ,
I don't think advanced age (characterized by age-related difficulties in doing daily tasks such as preparing food, driving, participating in outside-the-house leisure activities) starts until somewhere between a person's mid-80s and mid-90s. Obviously, there'll be exceptions to that range.
Mr McCain has obvious difficulty moving about. My guess is that is primarily related to the beatings he received. He also seems to have some vision problems (presbyopia?). That's a normal part of aging, not an exemplar of advanced age.
If you read comments by some of the older people here, they'll talk about administrations that will probably seem like ancient history to many people. But the reason that people refer to those administrations is because they see similarities between the situations in those days and the situations in the present day. An example would be the economy. Being able to draw on those similarities is generally thought to be why elders are believed to have special wisdom. That is, in societies that are not ageist.

Good post, Flatus, particularly the 3rd paragraph. I may not be familiar with clinical definitions of 'advanced age'. To my mind, it applies to anyone over 65, just because that is a typical demarkation used in contemporary society. I apologize if I misused the term, though I suppose it's only my argument that bear the brunt of my error, if I made one. Duly noted.

I think that being Hil'ry Clinton is what helped Hil'ry Clinton. The more often she debated & trounced the others, the harder she fought to stay in the race despite those calling for her to drop out, the more worthy she seemed of the office. Take gender & race out of the picture; look at actions & character. If we didn't have TV & the tubes of the internet...if we relied on a print report and candidates were only referred to as candidate A, B, C, D, etc., it would be much easier to see who would do the best job. This is, after all, a job interview and not a popularity contest for 8th-grade class prez.

Dr. Jerome Corsi Claims To Have Tapes of Obama Campaigning For Odinga In Kenya
"Dr. Jerome Corsi told Sean Hannity today that he has tapes of Barack Obama campaigning for his cousin, Raila Odinga, in Kenya back in 2006.
Odinga’s trying to overthrow the US-backed government of democratically-elected President Mwai Kibaki, so he can institute shari’a law (fundamentalist merging of religion and state) in Kenya.
Obama campaigned for Odinga as a sitting United States Senator, where he spoke in front of crowds with his cousin Odinga:
There’s a natural train of logic here that could be very damaging for Obama in the general election ...
If Obama’s audience wanted to hear anti-American remarks, and Odinga always obliged these people, then Obama, with Odinga, at a campaign rally like this, as a sitting US Senator, well, ..."

Champ, don't feel bad, I remember joking with my contemporaries about Charles de Gaulle running for president of France back in 1958. de Gaulle was 68-years old at the time. The jab of the day was, "Would you put your 68-year old grandfather in charge of your affairs for the next four years?"
The French did just that, and then reelected him. He retired in 1969.

OK, so the Obamabots chanted to drown out people daring to question BO's stance.
"During his speech, Obama was interrupted by three men who stood up with a banner asking, "What about the black community, Obama?" Many in the crowd began chanting, "Yes, we can," the Obama campaign mantra to counter the criticism."
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/obama
And maybe BO finally sees that it's getting out of hand, too. (Or, at least that he can't have it both ways.) I'm gonna take him at his word and hope that he has turned a corner so we can move on to the issues that need to be resolved.

Dismissing mccain's crazy comments as merely 'dumb' makes the same mistake Dems made in 2000. Most Americans ID with dumb: they loved Gilligan, Barney Fife, and Ted Baxter. However, people fear madmen. We should have learned early on that babybush experiences midnight visits from Jesus.
Here's the point about mccain: any man who calls his wife a "dumb c!nt" in public has a serious emotional or mental flaw, that should not be dismissed as merely 'dumb.'

ps - That story didn't really show BO's supporters in a favorable light, but they were just being good cult members; they weren't shouting down those men because they were racist. However, it served to create a bigger story:
BO now sees the race card back-firing on him. (Let's hope that means he's hit bottom and can go into recovery.)

Some Democratic 527 should run a series of ads showing how McCain treats the people he supposedly likes...
The first ad would retell the story of when he call his wife a C#@$. Then show him speaking about his affinity for the troops then show all his votes against them.
Do that with his rape joke, then how he voted against women's issues or talk about his wanting to repeal roe v. wade.
There is audio of it, so you could always use McCains words with that "I just farted" smirk of his...

The poster must have used yesterday's numbers.
I wish they would do indepth interviews with the people who are changing their minds. 70% of Americans think Shrub sucks --how could any of them be voting for a third Republican terms? Especially since McCain has attached himself to Shrub instead of divorcing him. Although I did hear a quote from Limpballs saying --it's just five percent of Americans who are causing all the problems.

There is an interesting family photo with scads of unidentified people standing in a line on the porch of a farm house in Arkansas. The shades even in a black and white photo range from very, very blond on one end through obvious looks and shades of red, brown, and black. While we can identify my grandmother and great grandfather on the white end of the spectrum, who all the others are and how related is totally undknown.
My great great great grandfather is described in contemporary records in Kentucky as "swarthy" and is listed in census records as "white", but for some reason his daughters chose to list his grandparents rather than his parents on his tombstone.
I've seen a picture of one of those daughters and her features are decidedly indian with very black hair. So as with most people in this country whose line goes back to the first white settlements, heaven only knows what racial strains are present if not accounted for. :-)

If you want to know about the automotive industry, I'll tell you about it from my perspective. My plant makes doors, center consoles and cargo systems for cars. My department is very slow right now. We make vinyl bolsters that go on the upper part of the door panel for the Ford Edge and Lincoln Aviator, I believe. I don't even work 40 hours a week, because we are that slow. They are now trying to come up with a plan to help us get 40 hours of work each week. Mainly through trying to put us in other departments on a temporary basis. There are only 2 departments I know of that are busy at work right now. One department just launched. They are very busy, but only run 2 shifts. The other department is the Lambda console line which we just picked up in July because the supplier that was building it before us completely dissolved. But, that line is only running production until December. We are getting new business in my department but it doesn't fully start until next May and it is only 1 or 2 machines. The other new business we're getting is for the Ford Explorer, but that won't arrive until 2011.

Comcast violated Internet access policy, FCC rules
By JOHN DUNBAR Associated Press
In a precedent-setting move, the FCC by a 3-2 vote today enforced a policy that guarantees customers open access to the Internet.
The commission did not assess a fine, but ordered the company to stop cutting off transfers of large data files among customers who use a special type of "file-sharing" software.
Comcast says its practices are reasonable and that the FCC's so-called network-neutrality "principles" are part of a policy statement and are not enforceable rules.
=====================
Now, let me get this right ... they can level fines but can't enforce their rulings?? doesn't make any sense ...
Wasn't it Comcast the one who blocked Pearl Jams online concert last summer???
I know it''s a dirty word, but ever since Reagan started the ball rolling on cutting regulations, over sight, .. no matter if it's Internet Provider .. Cable ... or Utility Companies ... we are slaves to this ...
yeah, I know, Repugs hate anyone looking over their shoulders, telling them they need to play fair ....

is it possible that our mr. d is really a dirty trickster? i find it odd that a so-called pro-o man would bait and attack jamie (among others) who has declared an intent to vote for o and has come to o's defense several times on this blog. why else the demeaning, the denigration, the dissing of a political compatriot other than that he is here to stir up hatred against the very person he supports, or says he supports. mr. d is obviously a mr. r in d clothing.
btw, your comment "their husbands cast a vote for their interests" is laughable. in those days wives were chattel, property. it is equivalent to saying men cast their votes in accordance with the wishes or interests of their mare, heifer, jenny, or sow. and can you truthfully contend that not a single black man was ever allowed to vote in this country's elections before any black or white women were?

I've learned a lot about cars and trucks over the last 13 years, Pogo. All of them have programs that run for 4 or 5 years. Some of our business lately has been replacement business. Programs we pick up in the middle of their run. They last for 2-3 years at most. Car and truck production numbers usually drop in July, but pick up in August. Usually that's when the new model year starts. However, sometimes production numbers drop, but becuase the demand is low, they don't go back up. That's what's happening now.

KC, that's pretty obvious - and presidential-like speeches to adoring (or drunk) crowds of furriners doesn't seem to be the something that needs to be done. I was listening to Bernie Sanders on Thom Hartman's show at lunch, and he explained that the nothing getting done in the Senate is a result of the Repugs' single-minded decision to stall or block any legislation unless and until the offshore legislation is repealed. I'm interested in seeing their explanation for voting against the 2009 defense appropriation bill. Should make for some interesting verbal gymnastics, and I don't mean opera.

Absolutely. I know for a fact that I am Scots, English, German, and probably Indian. So did my olive complexion come from my father's dark celtic looks or from my mother's side of the American stew. Since I have one blue eyed child , I have at least one blue eyed gene. Did it come from some highland chief or a germanic strain. Then there is the brown eyed gene present in my daughter's huge "puppy dog" eyes ... Indian or some Spaniard landing in England after the Armada?
Run my DNA and about the only thing that would surprise me would be Chinese ... oops there is that ice bridge bringing Asians to America. So I guess even Chinese wouldn't be a surprise.

Corey, like I said. Overall Ford's US sales were off only 13.3% - just over half of GM's US sales decline.
"Ford said its car sales were up 7.8 percent in July but that sales of S.U.V.’s, a segment that used to generate huge profits for all three Detroit automakers, plunged 54.4 percent. G.M. sold 18.9 percent fewer cars and 34.7 percent fewer light trucks."
54.4% - that's almost half, right? :-(

OK, time fora non sequitor. From Krugman's column today - feel free to use this when your nutcase friends start talking about drilling offshore.
"A McCain campaign ad says that gas prices are high right now because “some in Washington are still saying no to drilling in America.” That’s just plain dishonest: the U.S. government’s own Energy Information Administration says that removing restrictions on offshore drilling wouldn’t lead to any additional domestic oil production until 2017, and that even at its peak the extra production would have an “insignificant” impact on oil prices."
Could one of you folks who are in tight with the Obama campaign (I doubt they would look at an e-mail from me -I still get e-mail from the Clinton campaign and none from the Obama camp) send this to them for Barack's use in a debate with McCain - assuming they eventually have one?

Economic models predict clear Obama win in November
It really is the economy, stupid! Economic models that have correctly predicted the winner of almost all post-war U.S. presidential elections say recession fears will secure a victory for Barack Obama in November.
Any further darkening in the economic outlook -- many analysts think things will get worse between now and November -- would reinforce that election outcome.

Come to think of it, the more I consider it, the more likely it seems that you are in fact a McCain agent, UB. You expose those to his message who would not otherwise be privy, and you make a poor argument on Obama's behalf, possibly even alienating undecided voters with your tone and use of pejoratives...
Am I freaking you out yet? Because I'm thoroughly freaked myself.

The Paris ad was just plain dumb. The new Moses ad is humorous up to Moses point but then has no ending and won't be effective other than a one time giggle.
Neither ad is going to move any Democrats to McCain and there is no information there to move independents.

So basically, look over here at my [McCain's] silly ad and pay no attention to reality:
- don't look at the economy
- don't think about the war
- don't try to buy gas
- forget about health care
What a moron.

About that you are absolutely right. This has been a campaign with absolutely no discussion of the issues. It doesn't help that the media goes on a 24 hour a day loop of the latest inanity rather than saying HALT! If you discuss issues you get time. If you don't there will be no mention of your name.
If they really wanted to serve the American public, that would be the tack to take.

I don't think McCain can continue with "you-tube" quality ads...it's just too tacky for the position. I could see these ads from 527's but not directly from the candidate.

One more thing about the McCain ads. The obvious mismatch of mouths and words make it look very, very cheap.
The trailmix videos that Craig puts up every day have been production values than anything the McCain people have created.
Maybe Craig needs to pick up a consultant fee to show them how to do it correctly.

"Ageism (sometimes 'agism') is a social attitude. It is way of looking at older people that stereotypes them, just as people of particular races are stereotyped as being "smart", "industrious", "thrifty", "lazy", or "easy going" or when men and women are stereotyped as being "strong", "nurturing" or "sensitive" because of their gender."
"Ageism is also part of attitudes where people believe that older adults can be treated in demeaning ways. Many people note that as they grow older and as they reach certain age milestones (age 65 being one of them), others begin to treat them differently. Their attitudes change. In many cases, being treated differently means being treated as “less” — less valued, less capable, etc. Or they are stereotyped. That is ageism."
Why Does Ageism Occur?......

four minute old story saying Obama changed his mind.
Obama shifts, says he may back offshore drilling
By MIKE GLOVER, Associated Press Writer
Friday, August 1, 2008
(08-01) 16:07 PDT ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) --
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Friday he would be willing to support limited additional offshore oil drilling if that's what it takes to enact a comprehensive policy to foster fuel-efficient autos and develop alternate energy sources.
Posted by: anonymous | August 1, 2008 7:10 PM
(CNN) – After a week of bare-knuckle political brawling on the trail, it seemed Friday John McCain’s campaign had found religion.
In a Web ad e-mailed to supporters, the McCain team painted Barack Obama as a recipient of near-messianic hype – and a candidate all-too-willing to believe it.

Just for the record. Hillary Clinton opposed to Offshore drilling except in areas NOT covered by the Moratorium and only as part of an overall energy program.
Posted by: Jamie

Just to be fair. The Obama campaign disavowed the Ludicris song and said he should be ashamed of himself for criticizing Clinton and McCain with the language he used.

I used to like History and Science shows. Don't miss 'em at all, and miss the advertising even less than that. "Man Vs. Nature" was my favorite until I found out that *****r was a scam-artist like the rest. "How It's Made" was pretty cool, too, but very exemplary of the hypnotic effect TV has.
It's all a false reality to substitute for the seemingly mundane existence we lead daily, but yet it's in all forms inferior to the latter. What garners praise more than a visual program (cinema or television) than one that supposedly reflects accurately the true nature of things? Cut out the middleman and just throw away your TV.

If I had the time I would go back and find my post that predicted that Obama would be backing offshore drilling. But I won't waste my time.
I was against drilling before I was for drilling. This will be a problem no matter how it is spun. Democrats have not figured out how to deal with American car culture. Example: Hon. Chas Rangel has a big ol' Caddy. Let's see him trade that taxpayer funded limo for a Focus.
Personally I love that old Detroit Iron: Buick Electra225 was my dream car, but until those offshore wells come on line I'll just keep driving my Subaru.

Get real people. You have two choices in the general election…actually you have three. You can vote for Obama, vote for McInsane, or not vote. The last two will get you just what you have had for the last eight years. If either of the two latter are your choices, you are very satisfied with your life the way it is, you are very, very rich, or you don’t give a damn about anyone else in this country who is suffering in spite of trying very hard to make it, IMO. BTW, I’m not employed but actually getting by better than many, so don’t think of me when you think of those trying very hard to make it, even though I still try very hard every single day. I just have empathy for those who are suffering and there are many in Ohio.
BTW, as a child I stole the packets of Kool-Aid and took my finger, wet it, stuck it in the dry Kool-Aid, and licked the stuff from the packet dry. That’s the way I liked it. So, I don’t drink Kool-Aid!

Oregon Democrat - I'd like to report that I have managed to avoid EVERY post from anyone on my list of knotheads. I have 8 on my list, you know, but I'm thinking one is a troll, so guess that makes just 7. I'm very happy with my discipline in looking at names before reading the posts.
For those who want to suggest that I won't learn anything if I ignore opposing viewpoints, I'll just say that I avoid those knotheads because I have already learned that they do not present viewpoints - all they do is insult and call names. I read and hear opposing viewpoints all the time, just not here. If the anger against my opposing viewpoint would calm down, maybe we could get somewhere.
When we were kids, my mom said she thought we might be part Indian, we were thrilled. We all preferred Tonto to that boring Lone Ranger. Years later she confessed that she thought one of her uncles had married a woman who was part Indian. I'm glad she waited till we were grown up before she broke the news
A guy on Fox (muted) is a prof at City College of New York and his name is L'Heureux Lewis. I love it. What cool parents to name their kid something so neat. He's an Obama supporter and made his case. I just love that name.
Oh, yeah, I will accept the designation of 'old woman'
as a matter of fact, but draw the line at allowing it to be used as a reason to stop telling dirty jokes!
Unfair - discrimination - censorship!

We have an excellent grasp of reality. Anyone who believes in the principles of the Democratic party has two choices: Either vote for Obama or if you know you live in a totally safe blue state, don't vote.
That doesn't mean we have to support every decision he makes or position he takes. In fact right now I think he is losing a major opportunity to demonstrate that he is a leader by not calling out the Republicans on the whole offshore issue.
Don't compromise, prove he has REAL, absolute convictions. Conservation will bring down prices. Drilling will not make one drop available for years. Lay out the facts and LEAD.

Starting with Jefferson we know that infrastructure creates jobs. Federal programs have pulled us out of recessions, created jobs, and made life better all the way to Ronald Reagan when things turned into pork barrel, power politics.

A few years ago at work, our plant manager was standing up in front of us. He held up a piece of paper and said he was told to read a prepared statement from our company headquarters. He said, "I'm not gonna read to you what they wanted me to read to you." He took the piece of paper and threw it on the floor. He then took what they had written and gave a speech to us in his own more personal way. It was kind of nice. It was his way of saying, "I'm not like those corporate guys!" As we walked out of the meeting some guy said, "Yeah, right! If management would have been there he would have picked that piece of paper off the floor in about 2 seconds!" That was the difference of opinion right there. I took our plant manager as being sincere as far as caring about us. The other guy thought he was being very phony!

Sunday's NY TIMES evolution of internet trolls from an individual to a pack
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/03/magazine/03trolls-t.html?ei=5058&partner=IWON&pagewanted=all
In the late 1980s, Internet users adopted the word “troll” to denote someone who intentionally disrupts online communities. Early trolling was relatively innocuous, taking place inside of small, single-topic Usenet groups. The trolls employed what the M.I.T. professor Judith Donath calls a “pseudo-naïve” tactic, asking stupid questions and seeing who would rise to the bait. The game was to find out who would see through this stereotypical newbie behavior, and who would fall for it. As one guide to trolldom puts it, “If you don’t fall for the joke, you get to be in on it.”

Just to be sure everyone knows, when I said I took the Kool Aid, it was from my parent’s cabinets, not some commercial establishment. I would never have done something like that. In 1996, My sister bascially said to me, "How can you vote for Clinton again?!" That was a heavy sentiment here in West Michigan. But, I didn't wanna vote for Dole. So, I went into the election booth not wanting to vote for Dole and afraid to vote for Clinton. I voted for Perot, eventhough I wanted Clinton to win. Had Clinton lost, I would have felt bad. "If either of the two latter are your choices, you are very satisfied with your life the way it is, you are very, very rich, or you don’t give a damn about anyone else in this country who is suffering in spite of trying very hard to make it, IMO. BTW, I’m not employed but actually getting by better than many, so don’t think of me when you think of those trying very hard to make it, even though I still try very hard every single day. I just have empathy for those who are suffering and there are many in Ohio."
Karo -- I think you were trying to share something here, and I want to respond. Very few people on this board are trust fund babies. Most of us work hard for what money we have and many have probably been damaged financially by this economy. The last time I didn't have to worry about money was during Bill Clinton's term of office. I guess that's why it angers me that people were so quick to slam and demean him.
Anyway, thanks for sharing that concern about the economy -- I think most of us relate. We just believed very much that a different candidate could solve it.

Obama Was Not Aware What A Hitch Ball Was Used For. "Despite the phoniness of the trip, there was one candid moment that ever so slightly suggests the distance Obama may need to come in winning over the beer drinkers. … As Obama stood at the counter paying, he looked quizzically at a display of trailer-hitch covers dressed in the guise of moose and turkeys. Turning to the phalanx of cameramen and reporters, Obama bravely wondered, 'Who knows what a hitch ball is? This is a hitch-ball cover. We don't know what a hitch ball is.

Obama has arisen from nothingness, from one accomplishment-free political gig to another, propped up by leftists adulators and sycophants ...
Barack Obama is walking, talking, breathing narcissism. The iconography of his campaign is nothing, if not the glorification of Obama, a solitary, quite mortal man. They must glorify Obama's image because, in reality, he has no accomplishments that bear mention."

Crude Reporting: Ask the Tough Questions About Oil
By Howell Raines, Portfolio.com 07.21.08
News from Portfolio.com
THe cover of a recent BusinessWeek about the runup in oil and gasoline prices framed the question of what's causing it nicely: "Speculation or Manipulation?" But the story was maddeningly evenhanded. By dodging its own question, the magazine raised another.

Re: Karolenna and Corey
Karolenna advises there are only two votes possible in the Presidential race: Obama or McCain. Corey says he is not for either candidate at this time.
I understand Corey's sentiments, but I just wanted to point out that there are always options beyond what Karolenna has identified.
You could vote for Cynthia McKinney who is running for President on the Green Party ticket.
You could also vote for perennial candidate Ralph Nader for whatever party he could be running for.
Then there is Bob Barr who is expected to drain some GOP support off McCain...
Personally, I am pissed as hell that Obama is not choosing Hillary as his running mate. My vote for Obama is a vote AGAINST any Republicans again holding the White House and subjecting us to another great redistribution of wealth (from the poor and middle classes to the rich), their sexism, racism, homophobia, their disdain for any country other than the USA ... "WE ARE AMERICANS... DO WHAT WE TELL YOUTO DO"... bankrupting the country and also making bankruptcy not possible for those who cannot possibly make ends meet, wars for oil, incompetence, hate...
For this and MORE, I am voting against this corrupt republican machinery and voting for the Democrat. I still would love to vote for the Nutella Jar but the jar said s/he is sitting this one out...

Morning all,
Today's NY Times has a story and picture about Mr Obama's rally in St Petersburg yesterday ('With genie out of the bottle, Obama treads carefully on race' by Michael Powell NY Times page 1 Aug 2, 2008 with photo by Jae C. Hong, Associated Press).
The article was below the fold. The most interesting aspect of it was the photo of the demonstrators. Their banner read, "What about the Black community, Obama?" It also listed a web site that was illegible and a phone number (727) 821-6620.
I googled the phone number and it comes back to Uhuru group and The African People's Socialist Party. Here is their web site:
http://www.apspuhuru.org/index.shtml
I think their message is Mr Obama's biggest threat, both now, and post-election.
It's been obvious to me that since South Carolina there was clearly a misinterpretation of Mr Obama's message by the Urban black community. The protesting group recognizes this and is trying to pin Mr Obama down.
I hope this gets the play it needs and deserves.

Tom
A good morning chuckle, thanks.
You did leave out one option.
Voting for no one. That is probably going to be my option. As you can no doubt tell from my posts, I don't buy into the demonizing of McCain and Obama demonstrates too many flaws. I know you will disagree but I worry about the left wing in power too. So there is no candidate out there that I support and either one will make an adequate president. (neither would be as bad as the current administration) So I just let both sides battle it out and bitch about the results;-)

"Small study suggests McCain ads lampooning Obama hurt"
"A small study of people's reactions to the Britney-Paris ad suggested, however, that while people don't like the ad, it caused them to doubt Obama, and small percentages who'd said before viewing the ad that they'd vote for him said afterword that they wouldn't.
Those declines didn't result in more support for McCain; doubting Democrats and Republicans instead moved into the undecided column. Independents who moved away from Obama did say they'd vote for McCain"

"The Karzai government is totally in the hands of India," said Khalid Khawaja, a former ISI officer who served in Afghanistan in the 1980s during the war against the Soviet invasion and once described Osama bin Laden as "a wonderful person." It's hysterical to me that the press is outraged, I tell you, outraged, that McCain ran those two ads: one branding Obama a celebrity with little substance, and the other making fun of his quasi-religious campaign.
Hello? Those are the very things being talked about among many pundits! McCain ran with it.
If these ads are examples of dirty, low campaigning -- well, politics has gotten much nicer than I realized.

Uh, huh.....
Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr. would accept an appointment to the Senate if Barack Obama wins the presidency and leaves Gov. Rod Blagojevich with a vacancy to fill.
“I wouldn’t say no if asked,” said the Illinois Democrat, who serves as a national co-chairman for Obama’s campaign. In the past, he has declined to speculate on Obama Senate succession scenarios.
Several of Jackson’s colleagues also have been mentioned as possible successors to Obama if the Democrat wins the White House, as has Tammy Duckworth, a disabled Iraq war veteran who lost a House bid in 2006. Democratic Gov. Blagojevich could also appoint himself or another ally in state government.
Other than Jackson, the Democrats most often mentioned as replacements for Obama are Reps. Rahm Emanuel , Jan Schakowsky and Luis V. Gutierrez . Schakowsky has made clear that she is interested in the seat. Emanuel insists he doesn’t want it.

The Low-Road Warrior
Mudslinging will damage McCain’s brand—but........
"And who knows, even if Obama stays above the fray, he might still pull this thing off. Because as unwilling as he is to get down and dirty, McCain may simply be unable to drive a consistent negative message. “John is uncomfortable doing this stuff,” says Weaver. “And it isn’t in his skill-set. It’s like adopting the West Coast offense and making Dick Butkus your quarterback.” Butkus, it should be noted, was a linebacker—which actually makes the metaphor more apt. Obama may hesitate to call the right plays, but he knows the difference between offense and defense, and is unlikely to wind up sprinting into his own end zone."

I listened to his presser this morning. He started talking about the American people wanting the negative ads to stop & wanting solutions. He had my attention...but he never gave a hint of a solution for anything. I wish there was more to him, but he hasn't shown it yet.
Also, by your logic, I am about as much a cult member as any of the folks at Heaven's Gate would have been had they refused to put on their Nike's and eat their pudding were members of an opposing cult.
You are a moron. (Hey, you attacked me first.)

Patsi,Tom
The one thing that sticks out at me about this election cycle is how the bar for being called a racist has been lowered so much that even saying Obama is arrogant makes you a racist. I have been told in conversation from some of my Obama supporting friends at the gym that if your a Dem. or Rep. not supporting Obama it might be because he's black.I'm sure in some people thats true. Its just not fair to put the racist label on all people who either don't support Sen.Obama or who are criticle of him........

"It's been obvious to me that since South Carolina there was clearly a misinterpretation of Mr Obama's message by the Urban black community."- Flatus August 2, 2008 8:25 AM
Flatus,
Would you care to be more specific? I know SOME of the flak he's been getting from the black community recently has revolved around his past unsupportive comments about slavery reparations.

The most racist people are the ones who've never entertained they possibility they are racist themselves, tony.

Dog, I supported Tammy last time around when Emily's List sponsored her. Her story was compelling, but, quite honestly, she wasn't the most dynamic candidate. And, it didn't help that she didn't reside in the district she was running for.
Perhaps she's stronger now that she's had real experience in government. I want very much for her to succeed.

Rez, the couple of weeks leading up to the local primary, starting with his joint appearance with Ms Winfrey in Columbia at which attendees eagerly provided their local email addys, was the start of it all.
From there, a very strong grassroots populist movement emerged that involved virtually every AA pulpit in the state. The way the press artfully mischaracterized President Clinton's words just made things snowball.
His surrogates promised everything in the name of Obama. A message that by far exceeded what Mr Obama, himself, was articulating.
He is everything to everyone.

"The most racist people are the ones who've never entertained they possibility they are racist themselves"
Some of the most racist are those who consider themselves so liberal that they think racism has to be everywhere and seek to find it even when it is absent.

" never saw the press coverage on Bill Clinton's remarks, only the reaction of some SC voters to his equating Obama's primary victory with Jesse Jackson's earlier campaign (a clear case of not acknowledging the point, since Obama took Iowa weeks earlier, which Jackson never did)."
Bill Clinton was asked for the reasons Obama won the primary and he pointed out the very high percentage of AA voters Obama received and equating it with the large percentage Jackson had received. He was acknowledging that the race of the candidate in a state where the majority of Democratic voters were black meant that a large chunk of the Democratic voters went to one candidate rather than splitting evenly as it normally would in a primary.
For this he was called racist even though those same huge percentages continued in every caucus and primary that followed. Stating a reality is not racist.

Yes! In the end thats why I will being giving my vote to the Democrats.I as Independent no longer feel compelled to vote for either party, but as terrible as I think the current Democratic Party is the Republicans offer nothing new, its just Attack Attack Attack no substance.I would right in Hillary for President but Florida will be to close to take a chance so Obama it will be........

I don't agree with your statement completely there, Jamie, but I think you're on the right track.
Let's accept your statement for the sake of argument. The question becomes "Why would they seek it out? What's that motivation?" I have my own answer, I'll let you obtain yours.

"Here's one black guy who is sure as hell ain't voting for Obama:"
This guy's got a PhD and believes Obama has the ability to control the price of gasoline at the pump. That's says enough for me. Manning is the polar opposite of Wright. Blacks have their share of kooks too.

That ain't the only fundamental flaw in his understanding from my perspective, Rez, but he's a funny guy. I'd have a beer with him. Obama, too. The three of us will all have a beer and a good laugh together.

""Why would they seek it out? What's that motivation?" I have my own answer, I'll let you obtain yours."
Because it makes them feel good about themselves and any transgressions in their past. If they can point out a flaw, real or imagined, in others it is a kind of atonement.

Wright isn't a "kook", Rez, he's a "liability". BIG DIFFERENCE.
Posted by: champ | August 2, 2008 1:15 PM
Half right again, Jamie! (in my opinion). You're giving them too much credit in assuming it's atonement or redemption they seek. But otherwise, you're pretty close.
Posted by: champ | August 2, 2008 1:17 PM
Speaking of kooks;
I ran across this writeup while checking the definition. Sound familiar?
"kook [Usenet; originally and more formally, `net.kook'] Term used to describe a regular poster who continually posts messages with no apparent grounding in reality. Different from a troll, which implies a sort of sly wink on the part of a poster who knows better, kooks really believe what they write, to the extent that they believe anything.
The kook trademark is paranoia and grandiosity. Kooks will often build up elaborate imaginary support structures, fake corporations and the like, and continue to act as if those things are real even after their falsity has been documented in public.
While they may appear harmless, and are usually filtered out by the other regular participants in a newsgroup of mailing list, they can still cause problems because the necessity for these measures is not immediately apparent to newcomers; there are several instances on record, for example, of journalists writing stories with quotes from
kooks who caught them unaware."

"Jamie: I am with you that some liberals are the biggest racists of all. "
I well remember when a singer friend of mine bought a farm near Nashville, and discovered a graveyard back on the property. It turned out to be an old slave cemetery. Every liberal I knew -- and I include myself in that crowd -- tsk-tsked over its being so rundown and offered help. Well, in the end, the day we did the clean-up and backbreaking work, there were two "crews." Me and my son's high school football team pals, and a black separatist leader with his crew of young men. Not one of the "latte liberals" (if you will) showed up. I was so pissed I could have spit nails.
But -- the cemetery got a face lift, the names and family put together and a grand ceremony to dedicate the new headstones later, where surprisingly, many of the original tsk-tskers donned finery and attended.

Obama, A Disaster Waiting to Happen: Legal Challenges Imminent?
"Until now this has been a gentlemanly process that has amounted pretty much to self certification but it doesn’t have to be. In each and every State the papers filed with the State Electoral Commissions/Boards are subject to challenge ...
Obama, one way or another, is going to have to prove either some of the things below or all of them:
a) His Legal Name and Age.
b) His Legal Parentage and Place of Birth.
c) His Legal (Sole) Nationality/Citizenship.
d) Whether or not he has EVER been a Citizen of any Country other than the USA.
e) Whether or not he has ever Registered for Selective Service.
f) Whether or not he has any outstanding Tax Debts and his current Tax Status.
g) Whether or not he has any outstanding Criminal Convictions, etc. [Even unpaid Parking Tickets may count.]
h) Whether or not he is suffering from any Mental Illness or Condition that might render him unfit for Office. [Including any Record of Drug or Alcohol Abuse.]
i) Anything else any Court, Election Commission or Secretary of State asks him to prove.
It seems obvious that Senator Obama either cannot answer some of these questions adequately, or dare not answer them for fear of the consequences, or else he would already have done so."

Of course Liberals are the biggest racists. Their solution to every problem is to treat entire minority populations as children.
Posted by: champ | August 2, 2008 1:28 PM
Maybe atonement is the wrong word. More like if they can point it out in others, then that is normal and you are normal, and the need to fix is normal and therefor they can order you to fix yourself even if there is nothing to fix.
When it comes to self justification, thinking tends to be very convoluted. :-)
