With killer sharks and angry dogs mostly out of the news this summer, skyrocketing gas prices have certainly filled the void of traditional summer fright stories.
At least one of three stories seem to dominant our news cycles each summer: shark attacks, pit bull assaults, and horror at the gas pump. By end of summer hurricane season distracts us -- and then we learn that, despite the hype, the number of attacks by sharks and pit bulls were no greater than usual.
By the fall, gas prices tend to settle back to a mostly tolerable level. The news media gets blamed for overstating the threats, and the next summer we do it all over again.
But this time the politicians are touting more offshore oil drilling to make gas cheaper, as falling gas prices might still not settle to a tolerable place. Which means fewer beaches to enjoy, resulting in fewer shark attacks. So next year we might have to count on revenge of the pit bulls for a summer thriller.

Comments
Sounds like summer beach reading. Myself, I am more concerned that I will be swarmed by seagulls in a week or two when I head to the Jersey Shore. It is a good thing gas prices are dropping other wise I will be begging for table scraps in Stone Harbor.

Sorry for re-hashing the patheric here. Yesterday in Lansing they interviewed two women who were former Clinton supporters. They said they fully supported Obama now, but they wished he would pick Clinton for his running mate. I have also heard people say that they are waiting to see who Obama picks as his running mate before making a final decision on if they are gonna vote for him.

When they speak of 'off-shore' drilling, how close to shoe are we talking? One only needs to go a couple of miles out to sea before getting out of view from the beach; why would that effect recreation? If the floor was too deep at that distance, maybe they could angle-drill? I'm no oil-man, obviously.
Posted by: champ | August 5, 2008 2:34 PM

Caught it.
"I don't know if you think maintaining proper tire inflation and having regular engine service will increase performance and mileage. "
No argument on that point.
But, is that an acceptable substitute for offshore drilling
As Obama implied in his tossed off statement.
The article said it did but gave no hard numbers.

This isn't coming just from me. I'm hearing a lot of that as well. They aren't saying they will vote against him. There isn't any love for the Republicans (That's the PUMA percentage), but for a lot of people it is the difference between voting for him or not voting at all.
They are looking at it as a way to measure his judgement and see not picking Clinton as a bad mark against that judgement.
Maddow last night was railing on why would they resent another woman and that there were a lot of accomplished women who could do the job. What she seemed to dismiss was that these people can't understand why anyone who wanted their approval would take an unknown to go with another unknown instead of an already proven asset.

dog eye view,
Our was The Rise of Barak Obama, it came out a few weeks ago. Feedback is that it is selling very poorly. Reprints have been put on hold, We literally have thousands of pounds of paper in our warehouse that were allocated to print this title in Aug & Sept. NOt going to happen. Original print run was 75, 000..
The book you are talking about we did not print. Rumor has it the original press run is 250,000 which is a huge run these days. This is the book critical of Obama, the one we printed was a celebrity picture book all in B&W no full color pictures. Probably a bad move to print it as monochrome.

They have about 5 different oil rig platforms with different drilling devices depending on depth and probably other factors. Different leg types for anchoring. There are roughly 3500 of them in the gulf of Mexico alone.

IMO, all this "tire inflation & engine maintenance" is somewhat of a red herring, for lack of a better metaphor, in that although it can make some appreciable difference, the effects of such tactics are dwarfed by the savings resulting form eliminating as much local driving as possible. Starting and stopping guzzles gas, as you all know. My truck gets maybe 10 mpg city, which is awful, but on the highway it's not too bad, maybe around 25 mpg. I'm saving about $40 a week by using my bicycle as much as possible, and I have also developed a calf-muscle that I never realized existed. I realize cycling isn't appropriate for all, but anything one can do to reduce local driving helps a lot.
Some guy on here claimed a 29-33 mpg increase (14%) which is phenomenal, but I haven't heard of that much success from other sources. Over-inflating your tires is dangerous, also.

jamie, all of that has merit, but those are not the concerns that are at issue between the wind farmers and the fishermen. The New England commercial fisheries have been fishing the Grand Banks and Georges Banks for more than a century - and they want to keep fishing them and will fight to do so. That's where the issue of over fishing probably is the keenest, but that's not where the windfarms will be for the most part - those will be closer in, in shallower waters, and will affect a smaller portion of the fishing fleet that operate smaller boats. The ones at issue are proposed for Horseshoe Shoal in Nantucket Sound and should in part at least be within sight of Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard - which are the rough boundaries of the area at issue, which if you'll recall was an issue for Ted Kennedy that led to accusations of hypocrisy on the part of the Kennedy family because of his apparent NIMBY stance. That area is fished by medium sized trawlers for finfish, flukes and squid, and the efforts of the fishermen are to have appropriate mitigation measures put in place to allow for continued, albeit reduced, fishing of the area. Overfishing is a different issue, that will not be addressed directly as part of this issue. These areas have limits in place as it is, and the development of the wind farms will reduce fishing in the area by necessity.
And it's a long read, but the fishing-wind farm report I linked on theprior thread is worth the time, and I think you'd enjoy it.

Like I said before; If I can't see it from the beach, if it's not subsidized, if it is not causing undue damage to ecosystems, and is providing work for American citizens, I don't have a problem with off-shore drilling.
I'll also agree with the argument that it won't affect price via supply, either. There is plenty of supply available for immediate use, it is just tightly controlled, while also being affected by lack of refinery capability and logistics(transport). If the prospect of more off-shore rigs is unpleasant, I think the prospect of more refineries is even more so, as they blow up all the time and are extremely ugly and polluting. Supposedly, we need more of them, though. Maybe I should consult with the "Great T. Boone".
Posted by: champ | August 5, 2008 2:54 PM
Champ...are you consuming more calories by cycling more? It takes a lot of a gasoline to grow a crop and to me, fuel is fuel. Although the health benefits (if you can stay away from polluted air from the roadways) exist, there is a fuel/energy cost to everything we do.
On a small scale, it may work, but we need bigger fixes for the big way we live. On another day on this blog, I posted about creating a super monorail system(yep, like Homer Simpson) along the existing interstate system for commuters and freight. Overpasses could easily be adapted for stations for commuters or docks for freight.

The big problem I have with off shore is really long term. I don't want the stuff being used for anything. The sooner we get away from fossil fuels the better. The only way to do that is to put the funds into research and development of alternatives for all future use so that what fossil fuels are currently in production become sufficient to meet the demand without drilling for more.

A valid argument Wino (and I'm reluctant to use your name because I feel like I'm insulting you), but my concern is primarily the money coming out of my wallet, as I am not working too much as of late and planning to piss away a significant portion of my savings in the near future. To answer your question, no, I am not eating anymore than I did before I became a proponent of pedal-power (pow!), but I am more tired. I wouldn't be surprised if I actually eat less (I'm not a calorie counter) because i found that increased physical activity and a healthy diet makes the prospect of filling my gullet with junk pretty unappealing. I have developed a recent affinity for Snickers bars, however. They are like rocket fuel on an empty stomach.

Looks like the current figures are consistent with what I recall from the Bicycling article in the 70s. The bike wins hands down - almost 3 times as efficient as walking and most powered transportation modes aren't even in the ballpark. ~~~~Of course, carrying groceries can be problematic, and luggage is a whole different problem, to say nothing of the practical limit of about 15 m.p.h. for recreational level cyclists.(Just my wag, based on personal experience). And walking around in cycling clothing and shoes is no day in the park. ~~~~

Now I do know guys that do deck out head to toe, and some of them have that Homer Simpson physique. I have no idea what they're thinking, but if they're thinking those shirts make them either look good or make them better cyclists, I'd suggest they ditch the shirts, lose the guts and spend more time on the bikes. Now I really have to go.

Small measures help, for example, Tony LaRussa , Manager, St. Louis Cardinals, bans all Coca-Cola products from the locker room at the St. Looie ballpark because Coke sponsors animal lab experimentation. LaRussa is a strict animal-rights advocate, as am I.

I was so taken by this post, I'm linking the story so I can quote it.
"I'm so old I remember when they had mercury in thermometers. If you broke one the mercury would spill out. You could watch it roll around in little balls. If you touched it it smushed and reformed. You couldn't catch it and you couldn't make it into a nice solid little mass you could pick up. It was pretty and shiny and elusive. That's Obama to a lot of people. McCain is more like the sidewalk we dumped the mercury on. Just there. Not very interesting or exciting, but solid. Flip flops aside, and his aren't any more egregious than Obama's - after all that's what politicians do- McCain comes across to a lot of people as a known quantity while Obama comes across as elusive. When you're standing on a precipice it feels safer to back up onto the solid ground rather than throw caution to the wind and jump. And that's probably why the numbers are so close and why the election will be a squeaker." GLaB

I know nothing about Rasmussin Polls, but this is on their website (obviously they're going to hype themselves):
Rasmussen Reports’ Election 2006 coverage has been praised for its accuracy and reliability. Michael Barone, Senior Writer for U.S. News & World Report and co-author of The Almanac of American Politics, mentions, “One clear lesson from the Republican victory of 2004 and the Democratic victory of 2006 is that the best place to look for polls that are spot on is RasmussenReports.com." And University of Virginia Professor Larry Sabato states, “In election campaigns, I’ve learned to look for the Rasmussen results. In my experience, they are right on the money. There is no question Rasmussen produces some of the most accurate and reliable polls in the country today.”
Rasmussen Reports was also the nation's most accurate polling firm during the 2004 Presidential election and the only one to project both Bush and Kerry's vote total within half a percentage point of the actual outcome.
During both Election 2004 and Election 2006, RasmussenReports.com was the top-ranked public opinion research site on the web. We had twice as many visitors as our nearest competitor and nearly as many as all competitors combined.

Craig - every time you post two articles on the same day, I get SO confused!!!!!
Fair notice------- The following is an unsually snarky posting for me. I think I tend to not make outrageous statements, but this situation hits way too close for me to keep my yap shut. I'm sure what I say will offend some of you, but then those same people have irritated me many times before. I want to make sure you know that these are only my opinions and I have a right to them, and I have respected your rights to opinions I didn't particularly care for.
I am ecstatic re the story of KO and Dana Milbank! For one thing, I think there was nothing wrong with Milbank's use of just the one sentence, because I don't think the preceding ones mitigated it at all. The whole bit shows how Obama is seeing himself through an inflating prism. He glorifies himself - he should leave that to others, and appear to be a little humbled. It couldn't hurt.
I also love how one worm has turned, at least. One of my main complaints re msnbc has been what they have turned some of my favorites into. Dana Milbank was one of my faves and I hated to see him spout the "party" line. Another one I really liked was Richard Wolfe and was just sickened to see him tuck tail and roll over. Howard Fineman was no bright light of courage either, and Andrea Mitchell......and Chuck Todd.....
I wonder if any of them will take a closer look at themselves and follow Milbank's example. How can they not be disgusted?
The hilarious part is KO' s actual announcement of Milbank's being blacklisted - what a hoot! I wonder, has any other "anchor" ever "fired" a reporter openly because that reporter said something the furher didn't like?????I can't remember it. I doubt if they will even admit they blacklisted Craig.
We have a new political party, the MSNBC led by
SS Grupenfuhrer Olbermann who is also the entire
MUAC (Media Un-American Activities Committee).
Herr Olbermann is assisted by party functionary Tweety.
If there is ever a sea change at the station, you're gonna have to let me know because I literally do not watch it.

Just concerning women in the media, I would disagree, as media has been sexualizing young girls at progressively earlier ages, through such vehicles as "Hannah Montana", "High School Musical" and the like.
In a somewhat related matter to that and what Jamie mentioned yesterday, many career-oriented women around my age with whom I'm familiar are questioning their rationale as they find don't themselves in committed relationships and become more aware of the decreasing opportunity to safely have children.
That's not me talking, so don't kill the messenger. I have just noticed a lot of my female contemporaries questioning the feminist agenda of the 60's and 70's and whether the resulting social shift was for better or worse. I make no assertions to that end.

the problem is the 60's and 70"s feminist agenda which was opening up opportunities for women. It was the wingnuts that became the symbol of the movement in the late 70's and 80's. I doubt if any of your friends want to go back to the restrictions of the 60's.

Hey, Folks! We're now have to come up with accepted parameters for what is, and what is not a legitimate Town-Hall meeting. I just saw a video segment where Barack refers to something that was said or asked in a "Town-Hall" meeting that he was just at. Since my general observation is that Obama doesn't do unscripted settings, and that since he is avoiding McCain in true Town-Hall settings, that he is building up occasions he can reference to counter what I just said.

Yes, Jamie -- I thought that when people were talking about bimbos....while Paris Hilton seems bimbo-ish, from what I've heard, she's taken that image and bankrolled it into a fortune on her own. I'll tip my hat to her for that.

Champ,
I agree with you. I can’t believe you said that.
There is more sexualizing of young girls. Including more sexualizing of women doing the news too (although they’re slightly older). There are a lot of things that I see as getting worse.
I said they’re better now because everyone is always saying they are , so I figured there was something I was missing.
But I still don’t understand why your friends are blaming the feminist agenda of the 60’s and 70’s? I’m curious as to that line of thinking.

Chloe,
Because since they've spent most of their twenties pursuing career goals and 'having fun' (translation = getting loaded and sleeping around), they now find themselves unmarried and without children, hear their biological clocks ticking, and are starting to come to grips with the sad reality that many men prefer younger women, which they had been up until recently. Like I said, just what they tell me.

I've seen them both. They were, even O'Reilly, believe it or not, refreshing upon their respective debuts, as they were more inclined to be less biased and seemed quite rational. They are both blowhards now, two peas in a pod, clamoring to defend the empires they've created empires by not alienating the ideologues they attract and upon whom they depend for their livelihood. Funny stuff.
Just because I don't have a TV doesn't mean I'm totally unaware of them. They are very ubiquitous, everybody else has them, and has them on all the time. When I go to a friend's house or a bar and see a blaring idiot-box, I am reminded how happy I truly am to be rid of it.

and to Craig:
I tried to watch (couldn't get through it, sorry) your "Countdown" clip from the other day, and the contrast of your relaxed look sans tie and long-ish hair was a great contrast to Olbermann's greased hair, red tie, and ill-fitting over-starched pinstripe suit was great. You made him look like the tool he is without even trying.
^(views expressed not necessarily representative of Mr. Crawford.) Love ya, Keith! Keep up the great work!

OH man, what a horribly composed paragraph that is. That's my cue. Good night.

Just heard R Maddow on KO: "where ever Obama goes, a crowd comes to see him. As opposed to McLame, who has to go find a crowd."
Good one Rachel!

lol. Obviously a paraphrase as Rachel wouldn't say McLame.
Least not on air.

Champ - I appreciate all of your last post, esp the nice part. But you mis-understand my motive for stating in my posts a reminder that "it's just my opinion." I don't say that to stop people from disagreeing with me. I say it to remind people that anyone who wants to call me a fucking moron, or any other of the empty insults that have been thrown around here, will be attacking a basically non- threatening poster. It would be an un-warranted attack.
I don't mind people disagreeing with me at all. I do HATE rude speech and name-calling and juvenile insults, because I hate the anger within then. I grew up in an anger-filled house, and it raises my blood pressure. I don't indulge in it, and I think a rational exchange of ideas is impossible when the anger and insults are exchanged.
So please tell me when you think my reasoning is flawed - just remember that I put forward my ideas in a sincere attempt to explain my views, and not to offend anybody. In this instance, I feel I know pretty much who will disagree with me and have never had any desire to offend them.
So, Champ, I wasn't trying to forestall disagreement, just trying to keep insults down. That will always be my agenda.
Tony,Chloe, et al - those are very sweet things you said about me, but more of me? Even I couldn't take it. I love my own company but actually tend to be drawn to people who are not like me. I love variety.

Actually, I did understand your motivation, and I can't blame you. If you noticed, I only get vicious with those who engage in the same. There are a few who take a few cheap shots and then claim to be above such trifling, like EuroTom and UB, but I even go easy on them because I know they're not up to the task and it wouldn't be sportsman-like. I dig what you're saying, though.
