While John McCain appears to have succeeded quite well in consolidating the Republican conservative base and remaining competitive against Democrat Barack Obama, the trouble for him is that he has had to spend so much time doing it.
The most recent Pew Research Center nationwide survey shows McCain and Obama in a tie -- a statistically significant change from Obama's summer long lead in this poll. McCain's boost comes from a surge among traditional Republicans, evangelicals and white working class voters.
Still, the bad news for McCain is that he has had to work so hard for the voters who should have been in his column long ago. And veering to the right of the ideological spectrum to win those votes might cost him the support of middle-of-the-road Americans who tip the balance in November.
Given the Democratic advantage in today's political climate, perhaps McCain can at least take heart in the fact that he is not by any means down for the count.

I won't ruin my summer with the possibility that this party who trashed the US reputation and bankrupted the nation can be returned to power.
I have had a large truckload of sand delivered to my yard for head-sticking-into.

Eligibility Challenge, State-by-State: Act II
"... I suggested that there was an urgent need to make known and make use of the stunning information revealed by TexasDarlin and researchers regarding the potential ineligibility of Barack Obama to serve as President of the United States because of certain “technical” matters related to his legal name, birth certificate, and multiple citizenship.
These mere “technical” issues are those which may result in his removal from the ballot ..."

Uriah Heep is a truly creepy villian in "David Copperfield."
Heep is notable for his fake, cloying humility and insincerity. He's a greedy person fueled by ambition. He always says, "I'm just a humble person,"
only he pronounces humble, "umble."

Good morning peeps! All that talk earlier about beaches and things to do on them brought me back. Until I moved to the Wash, DC area I always lived walking distance from the beach or right on the beach. I'm landlocked in VA now -- with two weeks left to summer, I probably won't get to the beach at all this summer. Maybe a bay beach. There's a great one in Calvert County Maryland that's only about an hour from DC. It's loaded with fossils -- shark teeth in abundance in the sand. The bay at that point is so wide you can't see across, so I can imagine that I'm on the ocean.

Well here I am, it is a Belgian holiday and I sure am glad because I was bustin' my butt last week re-organizing sections of my shop.
About McCain... ewwww. I thought he was such a pr**k during the Clinton impeachment brouhaha. Anyway, if the Dems can't carry the election in 2008, they might as well pack up and go home. This is probably the most favourable Democratic election situation I have witnessed. So, if Obama looses, it doesn't say much for the electability of the Democratic party. Having said that, I do think he will win, but it should be a shoo-in and so far we aren't seeing that.
I hope Hillary will dazzle the attendees at the Democratic National Convention and, particularly, in pushing the NEED to unify behind Obama to win the White House for the Dems again. It is imperative I believe.

Over the past two evenings, Stinky and I have been watching the so-called director's cut of Heaven's Gate. I guess the film got panned when it first came out, but we find it really close to the real world. We'll finish it up tonight.
Took more than 30-years for Stinky to see the ending of Dr Zhivago--she always fell asleep somewhere around the two hour point. That was back in the days of drive-ins.
We haven't been to a movie house in more than 30-years. Don't do dvds and the vcrs are broken. We really like our HD dvrs. Really great films on HDNet Movies and MGMHD.
Yeah, I know there's a _lot_ of animal cruelty in the film.

"Still, the bad news for McCain is that he has had to work so hard for the voters who should have been in his column long ago." CC
Craig,
At least they have had the honor of McCain working for their votes and actually thinking their votes are important.
The Obama campaign made it clear months ago that they had a new coalition, and didn't need the working class. I haven't seen any signs of his campaign trying to correct that perception.

Obama has made his lack of interest in women and the working class very clear. He may need to just shut up for the rest of the contest. Yesterday I had a call from a guy who was a strong supporter early on, voted for O in the TN primary -- and who is now less than enthused. FISA was part of it, and lack of substance was another.
This guy says that now he finds himself not wanting to listen to Obama give a speech about anything. And I'm serious -- he was a STRONG primary believer.
It won't matter what any Tennessee Democrats do, but if that guy's attitude is spreading, Obama might need to rethink.

mornin' all.
Craig, I've made a few adjustments to your 3rd paragraph.
Athough "veering to the right of the ideological spectrum to win those votes" might lead you to expect that to "cost him the support of middle-of-the-road Americans who tip the balance in November", for some reason inexplicable other than the voters polled just haven't bought Obama and his message, that cost is not reflected in the current polls or the trends in support reflected in the summer's polls.
Frankly, I don't understand how a majority of the middle, comprised of swing voters and independents, which we have been told ad infinitum that Obama as the candidate could attract, all appearances to the contrary, could buy McCain's simple, stupid, dishonest line of horse sh*t (sorry 'dooty), but if dems actually do hold an edge in voters, that is what is happening. The difference from between 5 & 6 points to about 3 in the national polls in the past couple of weeks isn't dramatic and probably not a huge cause for panic, but it is a trend in the wrong direction. dog, if he does care and is reaching out, to the middle class and working class, the polls suggest it isn't having the desired effect. All I can say is I hope his batteries get recharged in Hawaii, because McCain is doing a better job of convincing voters that he should be then next president than Obama is.

LOL at the "Left Behind" comments above. A few years ago my sister sent me the first book of the series to take and read on vacation. The further I got into the book, the more I thought she had lost her mind and gone all holy roller on me. When I asked her about it, she said she hadn't gone over the edge, but she just thought it was a good thriller (albeit with a message that left me wonderiing what the hell she was thinking). You all do understand they are authors, writing fictional works to sell to an audience they identified as having money and a desire to spend it on novels with a Christian theme and are not necessarily experts on who might be or might not be the antichrist, don't you? Frankly, I found The DaVinci Code much better.

Barack Obama blinks in Hillary face-off
Obama blinked and stands guilty of appeasing Clinton by agreeing to a roll call vote for her nomination. That he might not have had much choice if he wanted peace only proves the point that he's playing defense at his own convention.

~~It wasn't Obama who caved, He was the one who had to convince HRC to have her name placed in nomination~~
This quote from the NY times so it must be true.
"The former rivals never spoke directly about the matter, but advisers said Mr. Obama encouraged Mrs. Clinton to agree to place her name into nomination as a nod to the historic nature of her candidacy."

"The Nation" but it's an excellent read.
Progressives in the Obama Moment
"Electric. When Barack Obama receives the Democratic presidential nomination before 75,000 people in Denver's Mile High Stadium on the forty-fifth anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, new possibilities will be born. A historic candidacy, a new generation in motion, a nation yearning for change. Even the cynics running the McCain campaign might be touched, if they weren't so busy savaging Obama as a vain celebrity not up to the task of leading a nation."
"A Sea-Change Election
The Obama nomination sets the stage for a sea-change election, one that could not only elect a Democratic President and increased reform majorities in both houses of Congress but also mark a clear turn from the conservative ideas that have dominated our politics for three decades."
"When John F. Kennedy was elected President, he too summoned a new generation into politics. While Kennedy's agenda was limited, the energy he unleashed helped build the civilizing movements of the following decades--the antiwar, civil rights, women's, environmental and gay rights movements."
"As a former community organizer, Obama has taught that "real change comes from the bottom up."

Chloe,
Thanks. Corsi is just the starting point. Like Jamie said yesterday, if only 10% of the people believe the Corsi stuff, wow..With it being a bestseller, how many are going to believe BO countering?
The gop probably have more stuff , on Obama, if all the adjectives and expletives were used, it would make the dictionary look empty. They will unload on him just before the convention, when he has not enough time to counter it. Good article on the convention , your 9:50 post. Politico has a question re Mark Warner being keynote speaker. 43% yes, 13 no, 39% said who is he.

Any attempt by BHO to dispell it gives it more validity then if it is just ignored.

Alright, I had to leave bruptly yesterday and missed Gordo & flatus' posts to me.
First, gordo.
http://blogs.cqpolitics.com/trailmix/2008/08/an-olympic-dream.html#comment-128126
Gordo, not to differ with you just for the hell of it, but bullshit. You spent almost the entire summer trying to show that the "fake" COLB suggested that Obama was born somewhere other than HI, rendering him unqualified to serve as POTUS by virtue of not meeting the Article II requirements. You certainly used the sophistic approach to do it by demanding that he prove the posted one was not a fake, but your intent was clear. And in many states, if the parents of a baby are not married, the father must sign a consent to have his name placed on the birth certificate. I'm not sure whether the COLB of HI is the same as the BC in most states, but I assume it is since it is issued by the state. At least here, an adoption only changes the father's name on a birth certificate if the adoptive parents petition the court after or as part of the adoption to change the father's name on the BC AND the natural father consents to the change, and the court finds it is in the best insterests of the child to do that (it is done infrequently at best). Assuming he was adopted by Sotero - which I do not concede was the case notwithstanding a school record that might suggest otherwise (parents lie to schools all the time about their kids' fathers, and schools don't generally require much documentation of anything beyohnd what the parents put on the school's documents) that would not necessarily require him to give up his American citizenship, and I'd venture to suggest that neither you nor I are familiar enough with the conflicts between Indonesian law and American law on citizenship to even intelligently argue the issue, so BFD.
Flatus, the purpose of my post to which you responded was simple - to point out that we (in this case McCain, which was the point) have no problem condeming other countries for violating international law in the same manner that we have violated it and have damn little credibility in our criticisms - particularly when they are uttered by the Idiot in Chief or his would be successor and surrogate. It was specifically in resposne to McCain's editorial, so if your intent was to change the subject, fine, but the argument was the editorial and his credibility, not the conduct of foreign affairs, and therefor did not distract from the argument. My post was pointing out the lack of credibility of McCain's WSJ editorial - not to stake a position on Iraq. It was in the context of the presidential election, not in the context of the conduct of foreign affairs with warring nations. I suggest you read his editorial - it is worth the time whether you agree with him or not.
I do agree that in the conduct of our foreign affairs going forward McCain's lack of credibility in his editorial comments during the election cycle is not the focus we should have, but rather should focus on what our appropriate role WRT the countries involved in such disputes should be. And I can't improve on what you wrote - in it's context I agree with most of it.

Eligibility Challenge, State-by-State: Act II
http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/08/14/eligibility-challenge-state-by-
===========================================
Why has Obama never shown the COLB except on the net? Do you really believe he will be able to withstand the legal attack planned by the Repubs? The COLB is only one of many documents he has refused to make public. Most of the info about Obama's background seems to be from one source - Obama. As investigators look into his past, they find the facts don't match Obama's story.
Obama wants the job of POTUS. It is up to him to show that he meets the requirements. Why do we have to prove that he doesn't? It is in his interest to lie. Prove he is not. His past has been scrubbed to the best of his ability. If you and others here would get away from MSM, there is much to learn.
Obama can get away with spin now. The Repubs are ready to "destroy" Obama - they have the ammo. No need to lie about him.

gordo, I had not seen that, but it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the law. The only state that might colorably have standing to even bring up the issue of Obama's eligibility based on the technical matters that Johnson (heavily relyingon Judah Benjamin) mentions is Hawaii. The other states are bound by the full faith and credit clause of the Constitution to accept Hawaii's laws on the issue f his birth and naming there. But even that doesn't matter, because only the federal government has jurisdiction over the citizenship of an individual and as a result over the eligibility of a citizen to be president. It is, as they say, a matter of federal law exclusively. Oh, and to take issue with his recitation of the 14th amendment - one of the primary purposes of that amendment is to apply federal law to the states. And note that Obama has never suggested that ONLY the 14th amendment applies to establish his citizenship, and only nutcases like Johnson ignore that part of the 14th that mirrors Article II. This makes Don Quixote's quest look like a meritorious one.
The dual citizenship and allegiance arguments are not based in the Constitutional eligibility requirements or in the law best I can tell. Were there merit to them, the FEC could file suit in federal court to challenge them, but absent facts to support that or laws that prohibit such arrangements, we lawyers call those type arguments red herrings. I'm sure you've heard the phrase.
I find this inclusion interesting - "Because of the hostility I have already experienced, and the threats to my safety and career that I may incur by openly challenging Senator Obama’s eligibility for the Office of the President, I respectfully request that my name be withheld from the public, democratic or republican party officials, or other public officials in any discussion of this issue. I can be reached by you or your staff at ____________________." It is suggesting that people who have been or may be exposed to no such threats lie to the SoS of their state to avoid having their names released. It is stupid.
And you do not know that Obama has not shown the COLB other than on the net; you only know that he has not shown it TO YOU or Johnson other than on the net. The FEC has standing to challenge his eligibility and it has not. Considering that it is an arm of the Bush administration, I can see no reason that it would not have done so if it had not satisfied itself that he was indeed born in Hawaii to a US citizen or was otherwise disqualified to serve.

As if we couldn't have guessed, Amazon has already let it be known that the main reason the Corsi book will debut at number one is that there have been a large number of "bulk slaes" for books to be sold or given away by groups not because there are individuals racing to buy the thing.

the problem I see with the Corsi book is not the number of sales it makes..... but the fact that the pundits are all talking about it....
the political round table on the Diane Rehm Show devoted about 15 minutes of an hour discussion on it this morning...... this stuff can become part of the atmosphere just by the mere discussions happening.....
on another note..... in the headlines of one of the tabloids I saw in the grocery store this morning..... "Bush and Laura to separate after they leave they WH.... she has bought her own house in Dallas"...... I laughed..... but after the Enquirer getting the Edwards' affair correct.... who knows..... lol....

What I believe is that you (Johnson, Benjamin, etc.) have no proof that Obama is not constitutionally qualified to be president and the Commission that has the responsibility to oversee elections and the ability and legal standing to challenge a candidate's qualifications has not challenged his eligibility. Look, wholly aside from being a lawyer and looking at things from that perspective, I was and am a Clinton supporter, and if I thought there was any merit to your quest I would be in there pushing your position. How can you believe that? Why would they? Obama is the One the Repubs have been waiting for. Challenge him AFTER he gets the nomination, not before.

Pogo, was off doing honey do's .
I trust neither Mr Obama nor Mr McCain to do as they suggest they will do if elected. Of the two, I trust Mr Obama the least. I do trust Mrs Clinton, but her chances of securing a nomination are exceedingly slim.
So, if the words of candidate 'O' and candidate 'M' are not to be trusted, and candidate 'C' is much less than likely to be elected, then why should we waste time pondering their future actions based on their past assurances?
Seems to me that we should be working together to create a [gasp!] Dictatorship of the Proletariat where poor clods such as we, are able to state our immutable goals.

Okay Rez. I was hoping you wanted to fly to California in November.
Posted by: Jamie
| August 15, 2008 1:28 PM
Gordo, you are naive to think that the Bush administration FEC would wait until after the nomination to move on that and allow the Dems to build any momentum through their convention. Filing now would serve the purpose of injecting uncertainty into the Dem selection process - why now instead of after the convention? Because McCain is on a (small) roll and now would be the time to increase his momentum, plus nothing other than notice to the public that a suit has been filed would occur in the next 2 weeks. Even the repugs are not stupid enough to think that waiting until after the nomination would be a better way to capitalize on the current momentum McCain is enjoying by introducing chaos in to the process and screwing the process up royally.
Besides, there is no legal impediment I know of to prevent someone who is not qualified to hold an office from running for it (assuming they meet the requirements of the FEC to run at all) and an argument can be made that until an unqualified candidate has been elected, no legally cognizable harm upon which to base a lawsuit has occurred. And do you really believe that the Democratic party apparatus is unaware of this threat of legal action and has not investigated the merits of such an action in anticipation of it? Even I give them that much credit.
And he will not be challenged successfully state to state - federal jurisdiction and comity will prevent that.
Look, this is a wholly republican effort to find a procedural way to defeat the Democratic nominee that smacks of the same dirty politics of innuendo that Rove developed to an art form and as a democrat, I don't support any of it.

Pooper scooper is the appropriate way to deal with it alright, but the problem books like this is that people, especially those with sheep tendencies usually believe what they read. And once the idea is out there it is like trying to incorrect credit information out of the credit industries database. Once it's in the computer it spreads everywhere and there are always people who are going to swear it's the truth.

November is probably the one and only real "weather" month in California. It is just plain downright undependable. Usually the first half is clear, warm and wonderful and then the rains (deluge) come followed by two weeks of winter : -)
The variations are endless from undrivable tule fog to heatwave to the gods must be crazy storms complete with mud slides and houses falling into the sea.
The driving is easy as long as the roads are open and you can see more than two feet in front of you.

Let's see how this works. The Repubs have devastating info on Obama. So what would the Repubs do? Of course, they would knock Obama out before the convention. Then they could run against Hillary. The AAs and many other Obama supporters would be furious with the Repubs and unite behind Hillary. Seems like a great plan!

Are you now a U.S. citizen?
Have you ever held as a youth or adult, citizenship in another country?
Did you ever possess or travel using, at least in part, the passport of another country? (E.g., while in Indonesia, visiting Pakistan, Kenya)
Did you renounce any foreign citizenship, and when, and do you now hold solely U.S. citizenship today?
Can you confirm or deny your name change as a youth from Barack Hussein Obama II to Barry Soetoro when you were adopted by your step-father?
Did you legally reclaim your birth name? When and how?
Why did you not list your adopted name Barry Soetoro on any forms associated with your legal profession or others that ask for any other names you have ever used? Have you now or will you update these records?
And by the way, did you register with the U.S. Selective Service when you turned 18?

No, gordo, pay attention - it's not that hard. They won't knock Obama out before the convention by filing the suit - filing a suit based on already known allegations doesn't knock him out - they just throw into question his eligibility before the convention by filing the lawsuit, the merits of which Obama loudly denies (the actual filing of the suit is almost immaterial since the strategy has been so well laid out by Johnson and his readers - and the underlying questions about the COLB are so well known at this point they could not be considered a surprise in October or any other month for that matter) And Obama still becomes the nominee because he's reassured the SDs that his COLB is the real thing, but it makes it look like the dems are engaged in a circular firing squad - making it a chaotic convention with a weakened nominee. It's just as plausible that the AAs unite behind Obama in their fury against the Repugs no matter when the suit is filed. They do support him better than 90% after all. In fact, you apparently labor under the false impression that anything at all happens quickly in the legal world, particularly in state courts, where nothing happens quickly. If you want an October surprise based on a lawsuit (federal only - it's already too late in any state court - and that letter ain't gonna make any SoS, particularly not any Dem SoS, move quickly to challenge the nominee once he becomes that), you have to file the suit at least 45 days before any of the "proof" you expect to be produced will be forthcoming (and that assumes a lot since there would inevitably be tons of motion practice regarding filing the documents under seal, etc., etc.). Any lawyer worth his salt could delay production of documents by a month or more beyond the 45 day window following service of the suit, which would get us beyond the election in Nov., at which point the FEC would very likely be deprived of standing (he would no longer be a candidate, and therefor not under FEC authority any longer) for sitting on its hands when it had the opportunity to file and have the merits of any questions it had about his eligiblility resolved in a timely manner. There would of course be arguments to the contrary, but in the meantime, Obama may well have been elected.
You note, I'm not saying anything about the outcome of any of this - just that your idea about the timing of a suit and the so-called state court challenges to knock Obama out of the presidential race are based on a lack of understanding of the process you are advocating using to affect the election and are ignoring the fact that the COLB question that would underlie those suits and challenges is not a surprise any longer.
Posted by: pogo
| August 15, 2008 2:50 PM
... and those questions - not bad questions, but to "knock Obama out" they would have to be asked and answered or avoided before the election, and there are only 2 mechanisms available to ask them in the context of a lawsuit - Interrogatories ( see the discussion about he 45 day window, above - it applies to all written discovery - or through a deposition (oral or by written questions) - which would not likely occur before discovery is exchanged, subject to certain exigency-based exceptions, none of which strike me as applicable.

Allow me to use the following anecdote in describing the Hilary/Obama election dynamic.
My best friend in high school turned out to be gay. As luck would have it, we figure that his twin brother was gay since he was the quiet one but we turned out to be wrong. Anyway, my friend wrote me a letter which I read when I was hungover after a homecoming rager...After I thought about it for a second, I figured no big deal and started to perk up for some tailgating...
When I finally got my friend on the phone, we talked about when he knew, etc. etc and he asked if I was pissed that he was gay...I replied, I'm not pissed that your gay...I'm pissed that you knew you were gay and still cock blocked me by hitting on girls you knew I liked...
How does this pertain to Hill/Bar? It's one thing if Obama just blows it voters. If that's the case he has no one to blame. Were it to be shown that she/Bill were trying to court voters to her favor instead, then she would receive huge blame.
Based on what I've heard, if she gives an appropriate speech and votes for Obama's nomination at the convention, anyone still voting for her would just show themselves to be spiteful and I think she'd be okay.

One other slight viewpoint. I went as far as the county level as a Hillary delegate. If I had the money then would have put myself forward to go as far as the convention.
If someone gets to that convention as a pledged delegate, they are carrying the votes of thousands of people. It really doesn't matter what Sen. CLinton chooses to do with her individual SD vote, but as a delegate to the convention I would feel honor bound on that first ballot to cast it the way those voters had instructed me to do.
That was what was at the heart of all this protest. Those 18 million people told their representatives the way they wanted that first vote to be expressed. To try to shut down the procedure in this close an election and not let those voices be acknowledged just strikes me as a rejection of the electoral process.
I'm glad there will be a roll call. Sen. Obama will still be nominated. Sen. Clinton will still support him and the delegates will have done their duty.

No, pogo, pay attention - it's not that hard.
This is not just about the legalities. The goal this is to create doubt - to undermine public support for Obama. The Repub opposition research teams have been busy. They don't have to wait for a legal resolution - they just flood the country with attack ads. Then there is TV, radio and the net to spread the "dirt".
Do you understand that one line of attack against Obama would be that he is un-American, anti-American and possibly not American? Sure, this sounds fantastic to most on this blog. The foundation has been prepared - they are waiting.

Posted by: patd | August 15, 2008 3:58 PM
Gordo, pardon me for focusing on the legalitiesand potential legal strategies, but that's what I do. If just spreading doubt is the goal, I contend that this is all just a ruse. If there's any merit to it, the earlier suits are filed the more that would happen in them and the more doubt would be created - unless, of course things are as Obama supporters assert and there ain''t no there there - and I suspect that will be the outcome. The more you bring this up and the more we discuss it, the more I'm convinced this is all BS, and Larry Johnson is just a Repug tool, and considering what you are suggesting here, I suppose you are as well.

Flatus,
Each state has "X" number of delegates. Each delegate has alternates. Theoretically, the alternate is supposed to be pledged in the same manner as the person but if the run short, any alternate can be thrown in.
Also, the delegate is not "legally" required to vote the way they are supposedly pledged. There have already been reports of Clinton delegates who dropped out being replaced by Obama alternates (I forstalled one of those moves at the County level though I'm sure they pushed it through at State).
End result: Instead of the pledged delegates she earned and with the defecting SDs (including herself), she will probably only get 1/3 of the delegates instead of almost half.
Still the principle will have been upheld.

Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”

"I think we can predict the future..."
Actually, I meant to say something when Pogo talked about predicting. Seers predict. Fortune tellers predict. etc.,
I prefer to forecast based on understandings of how things work. In this case, the understanding is of Soviet/Russian doctrine.
And now we have talk of possible action in Poland.
Russian reaction to our unilateral abrogation of the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty was forecast as soon as the Bush Administration decided to deploy our system, which, up to that point was merely something under development.
From the Russian point-of-view, having a deployed ABM system reduces their ability to retaliate should nuclear warfare be initiated. A reduced ability to effectively react places them at a strategic disadvantage, a disadvantage that the ABM Treaty sought to eliminate allowing them, and us, to reduce tensions.
I, and many others, forecast that the Russians would view deployment as tantamount to an act of war. We were shouted down by the neocons.
There are no surprises in what the Russians are doing.

"Advertisers will see you read this: If you feel like a shock, try finding out how many online advertising companies are tracking you every time you use the internet."
One way to do so is to go to the Network Advertising Initiative site in the US (www.networkadvertising.org) and click on the opt-out button that allows you to evade their surveillance. It also tells you how many have been watching you already."

Has anyone here ever used CCleanter. It's a free download and it cleans up the files on your computer whenever you ask it to. (not to replace your antivirus of course). But it has a lot of usesbesid es getting rid go old files, etc. One thing it does is remove any old programs you don't want anymore. And it's a lot easier and faster than windows program uninstall. I've been using it for a month or two now. You can check it out if you want by searching for ccleaner or using the link below.

But, as I told him -- "What the hell, you believed enough to vote for him in the primary. So you might as well go for it. Meanwhile, I'll hope for the best, but am buying a 'Don't blame me, I voted for Hillary' bumper sticker'."
I was holding this trying to be nice, but you don’t know anything about "nice". Probably don't even know the meaning of the word.
What’s keeping you from buying a bumper sticker that says “I don’t give a damn about this country and it can go to hell because my woman didn’t get her way”. And, also get one that says “Russia and Iran can have this country because the US didn’t treat HRC fairly”. Russia and Iran are in this thing together. You do know that, correct? McBush gets in there Iran is another target for him because all he knows is bomb, bomb, bomb. You think Russia is going to sit idly by and allow that to happen?
Now, put your cigarette in your mouth and start calling me all those names you like to spout out. I’ve given you all the room you want for a long time. But, enough is enough.

Was in California for a week, someone here said russian river valley, so we went along the river to ocean. My feet were swelling from long sitting travel- so my daughter said she would find a place for me to put my feet in river. It was birthday- 08-08-08 and I found 8 pennies, so I thought my lucky day. All okay until I stepped in the river and went down 8" of mud and panicked, fell in river trying to grab a tree limb. Never bought used clothes before- but was forced to in order to visit wineries and then go to St Helena, Taylor's automatic refresher, voted by bon-apetit as best hamburger in US. With sweet potato fries. Holding my vote for this for now.
Believe I have had my fill of California for a while. And needless to say, I did not play the lottery.

Julie, India has certainly benefited from the tremendous outsourcing of jobs from the United States, and from our willingness to educate and then employ highly skilled Indians.
But, so far as defense is concerned, they've largely formed their own alliances based on what they perceive to be in their own best interest. They purchase hardware from the UK, France, Russia, and some from us.
They are a nuclear power in their own right--something that gives them some comfort in dealing with Pakistan, and neighbors such as Iran. They are clearly not a match for China or Russia. And they don't want to be seen as part of group ganging-up on those countries. So, a neutral appearance has been carefully cultivated.
And, after having been part of the British Empire for centuries, they certainly want to maintain their complete independence.

"A modern comparison would be the role played by United Fruit in Central and South America."
Close but not quite.
From Flatus's link
"The Company transformed from a commercial trading venture to one that virtually ruled India and other Asian colonies as it acquired auxiliary governmental and military functions, until by the Government of India Act 1858 the British Crown assumed direct rule, following the events of the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The Company was finally dissolved on January 1, 1874, as a result of the East India Stock Dividend Redemption Act."
As I recall the United Fruit company had no charter and didn't act in a quasigovernmental fashion. They just owned everything in sight and if that ownership was threatened they own enough of the US government to get the Marines to protect their property.

Some of you have ask about my mother.
I spent the afternoon with her. She is doing very well. She had a pacemaker installed 3 mounths ago and it seems to be doing the trick. At the same time she was in the hospital the doctor had the family come together to discuss what further measures we wanted. It sounded like they were going to let her die. My sister joked that it was that conversation that made moms health improve.
To tell the truth, last January, I didn't think she would be alive today. Everytime she showed a little improvement she would have a set back. 2 months in the hospital is a long time. We are fortunate and I had a pleasant visit with my mother today.
I call that a blessing.

Back to India in the world. They had a close relationship with Russia during the cold war. Most of this was to have a counter balance with China, who they had several border disputes. They have seemed to be coming under our umbrella of protection lately. This is a good relationship for us in the area as the Arab world continues to disintegrate. We need access to ports and landing rights in the area and no Arab country is secure enough to provide them.

THE CLINTON CONVENTION
"Hillary and Bill have hijacked the Denver convention ...
This Clintonian tour de force raises a key question about Barack Obama: Is he strong enough to be president or can he be pushed around? His failure to stand up to the Clintons makes one wonder how effective he will be against bin Laden, Iran, Chavez, or Putin."

A longtime Clinton adviser said it was “crazy” to guess at numbers but estimated that the former first lady would garner between 600 and 1,200 delegates – considerably short of the approximately 1,800 she had collected at the time of her departure from the race in early June.
“It’s a bizarre strategy,” said one Democratic strategist of the roll call. “It could backfire and show that her influence is waning. Chances are, she’s not going to have as many delegates vote for her on the floor as she had in the primary.”

“How does this pertain to Hill/Bar? It's one thing if Obama just blows it voters. If that's the case he has no one to blame. Were it to be shown that she/Bill were trying to court voters to her favor instead, then she would receive huge blame.
Based on what I've heard, if she gives an appropriate speech and votes for Obama's nomination at the convention, anyone still voting for her would just show themselves to be spiteful and I think she'd be okay.”

bethyboo,
I second that emotion. . .Sturge is usually always charming and witty. His reactions to that "one person" haven't seemed out of line to me.

Good op/ed from Bob Herbert in today's NY Times, about the nation's crumbling infrastructure -- asks why neither McCain nor Obama are addressing this:

Sturge:
It really is an unusually nice group of people here, and it is honestly amazing it's held together as well as it has.
I regret that I took the bait yesterday -- I thought I had trained myself just to ignore the crap. After all, having him pick fights with the likes of Patsi, Jamie, you or Jack got to be like watching a feisty little shrimp get into the same barroom brawls and getting his ass kicked the same way every day.
But for him now to start beating up on the likes of RebRenee and Flatus? It's like the little shrimp can't deal with the bar fights anymore, so he's walked down the street to the church and started pulling people out of the pews to stomp on them. That's what disgusted me about the whole thing.

Patsi, I thought the entire editorial section was worthwhile today--unusual.
In the Tampa Bay region we had a very active League of Cities group that met monthly. We talked about a plethora of issues affecting most of us. They were really worthwhile. And they were 'noticed' public meetings, but I almost never saw an outsider there.
And we would have an annual regional retreat focusing on educating ourselves. Once again, these were 'noticed' public meetings. You can guess how many attended.
And our annual statewide conventions were really important learning experiences--even more important than the national affairs.
People really sell their local elected officials short; most are truly dedicated to making their municipalities better.

Viv,
I haven't grown to fond of Vista either. Also take a look at that CCleaner. Good all around tool. I still haven't had a chance to check out Gordo's recommendations, but I'm going to.
I really hated seeing what you, Tony, Sturge and others went through last night. I hope it goes in one ear and out the other- like having you here. You know it's all coming from one person, no matter how many names he uses.
Lard, I agree with you about Flatus. A class act.

Peace Comes to the Democratic Party
"Seriously — good work, Democrats. There is no greater achievement than the nonviolent resolution of differences, and we’ll take it on whatever level we can get it. Organizing a harmonious convention is not exactly a new Middle East roadmap. But like all settlements between enemy forces, it required leaders who were willing to forego the temptation to appear tough at all times, and followers prepared to get over it, whatever historical wound “it” happens to represent. For an example of a situation in which both these factors are AWOL, see the current conflict in Georgia."

Obama Moves in the Right Direction on Taxes
My Kind of Flip-Flop
Lo and behold, Team Obama is moving toward the supply-side and pivoting toward the political center on key aspects of its tax policy. Writing in Thursday’s Wall Street Journal, Obama advisors Jason Furman and Austan Goolsbee outlined a plan that would only raise tax rates on capital-gains and dividends from 15 percent to 20 percent for individuals making more than $200,000 and on family incomes above $250,000. Prior to this, investors worried that Obama would double the 15 percent tax rate on cap-gains and bring the 15 percent rate on dividends back to 40 percent.

Dog,
I do have to hit to road this morning, but I love the "grace and good judgment" stuff. Jamie does have a real art for conversation, but you've already said it well. If we can all put forward the same effort you have just put forward, we'll have an even better forum. I, for one, will do my best to always be reasonable and nice. (we all have our moods, but those are easy to deal with).

Here's a really insightful graf near the end of a fabulous Martin Amis essay on terrorism in today's WSJ (link to article below, and it's definitely a worthwhile read).
I excerpt this graf, because I think a similar human dynamic exists with the attention-grabbing, high-impact reaction one can so easily achieve with persistent negativity and attacking in blog comments (vs. the harder work -- and perhaps lesser impact -- of being positive and thoughtful).
"In his reading of the terrorist psyche, Conrad persistently stresses the qualities of vanity and sloth -- i.e., the desire for maximum distinction with minimum endeavor. In other words, the need to make an impression is overwhelming, and a negative impression is much more easily achieved than a positive. In our era, this translates into a thirst for fame. Probably no one under 30 can fully grasp it, but fame has become a kind of religion -- the opium, and now the angel dust, of the mass individual."

I'm with Jamie, the aliases add nothing to the dialogue here. If someone wants to make a comment a little funnier or perhaps add to his/her point, he/she could add the alias' signature "above the line," so it appears in the comment.
I'm at a loss for anything very funny this morning, but here's a poor example for the end of a long post:

Dog, thanks for your meaningful comment.
And I agree with _everybody's_ reaction to it.
Each of us is a _very_ distinctive individual who views comments and events from their own perspective. That accounts for the differing reactions.
Just made me think of the old 'transactional analysis' methods of communicating effectively. Here's a wiki on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transactional_analysis
I thought it generally worked pretty well if the supposed adult, often the authority figure, didn't jump into parent mode.
People sense almost immediately when they are being manipulated; TA, if not practiced thoughtfully lends itself to manipulation with things ending up worse than they were in the beginning.

Stinky and our daughter Flata are in the kitchen making Korean pancakes. They're something like crêpes made with thinly sliced scallions, mushrooms, jalapeños, and a bunch of other things. They're sautéed in sesame oil.
I will have my usual raisin bran with sliced banana for my lunch.
But, it's really nice having Flata come over.

Bush continues his quest for a police state. Will Obama enable him yet again? If Obama is president will he stop this trend? And may I say, I have no problem with the government knowing any damn thing it wants about me. All they'll find is that I can't stand Bush and don't care for either of the presidential candidates this time out. But I promise you that this information will be used against political rivals. Nixon lives.

Because BETHY< I responded to him ... instead of ignoring what was said .. in the fact, am guilty of prelonging the torrementing ... I was just feeling NO PAIN last night after my evening out with my Children, so thought I'd read a bit ...
Chloe: HE/She/ is one of the reasons I don't post as often as I'd like .. it's just so childish to come onto a Blog & say nasty things to whoever post .. there's enough nastiness in the world to have to read all the crap that is thrown at us on here ... like being called an ass because I offered to light a candle for KARO to help with her what seems to be, negative feelings ...
I love all the information I get from everyone here, even the a#@%^&*'s have some posted links that are interesting .. But it's gets old, first the nasty remarks & then all the preaching we get from others who aren't on the receiving end & don't see anything wrong, instead, they attack the one who brings the bad behavior up in the first place .. they keep telling us to just ignore them, they will stop ... not going to happen .. that's not in our Human Naturae .. we can only take so much, then we HAVE to say something ...
Yes, this blog is the most pleasant one I've been on, but it's just really hard to justify what you get when you post from some ... makes me not want to post

Chloe: I think that's just on the surface ... Oh, the majority of Hillary's supporters will vote for BO, maybe grudgingly, but they will ... Then there's the "others", who are always going to be full of resentment on how the DNC ran this primary .. I'm sure it will be debated for years to come ,...

They would be funnier if they used the suggestions of including the "alias" as part of the message over their known identity. At least then they would get credit for their "humor".
It takes an odd sense of humor to find comments meant to bully, insult or anger as "funny"

Dog, I certainly appreciate and understand your effort at even-handedness. However, there is a difference between even-handedness and moral equivalency.
This blog is home to mostly good-behaving people who sometimes lapse into bad behavior.
It is also home to one or two or three constantly bad actors who occassionally show a good side.
Moral equivalency involves matching up the rarely bad behavior of the many with the constantly bad behavior of the few, and calling it all a wash. Or the converse: Citing the rare examples of good behavior by the few, and arguing that that gives them a claim on the fellowship and society of the many.
Both of those arguments are simply wrong.
I don't remember much about Heather. I do remember a couple of really horrible things she said. But I don't remember her having a cadre of ardent defenders. I seem to recall that her worst behavior was pretty much roundly condemned, which is why she probably just left.
I agree with you about not giving the bad actors "air" to breathe. However, sometimes they simply have to be called out. Ignoring bad behavior -- just like ignoring the effect of a substance abuser -- can sometimes be enabling in and of itself.

Dog,
I understand what you mean, but I don't think it is open to judgment. I think if you simply ask who is creating anger in this space, or at least way more anger in relation to wisdom and goodwill, there is not much to debate. It is a simple fact.
As far as the political fault lines go, I'm not even sure any more who I am in agreement with here. (I was a strong Hillary supporter who is now excited about my opportunity to vote for Obama in November.) But that has not affected my opinion about any of my fellow commentors here. And I don't feel like my openness about my position has affected how anyone treats me.

The church he joined in Chicago was a political device to get into office & nothing more.

Bill Clinton, “I Am Not A Racist”
"Well, thanks Obama and Jim Clyburn. Without you two, this man who has worked his HEART out for the African American community his entire adult life, who has his Clinton Foundation Office in HARLEM, is being questioned on whether he is a RACIST or not. SHAME on you both!!! That was simply despicable behavior on their part (aided and abetted by Jesse Jackson, Jr., who also painted Hillary as a racist - don’t get me started on him.).
I can tell you this: I will NEVER vote for Jim Clyburn again (he is my representative). He engaged in WILLFUL race-baiting, and completely manipulated what Bill Clinton said about Obama’s “fairy-tale” Iraqi War stance."

NEW THREAD
Posted by: Craig Crawford
| August 16, 2008 12:08 PM
Patsi, responding to your 'what did Heather say' comment. I'm deliberately placing this comment in a closed thread because I don't want to start things over again in the new thread.
Heather had a high order detonation.
It was pretty well clear to me that she was going through a rough patch. And, other commenters sensed it as well. Although most of us tried to help her through it despite that process being difficult for some people because of serious disagreements with her politics.
At least one commenter seemed to sense her vulnerability and launched into her in very personal terms. She was unable to handle it and responded with some really vituperative ad hominem phraseology.
At that point, most of us backed away trying to let the participants return to an even keel. It never did.
Sometime prior to the explosion, I asked one of the combatants, trying to build a bridge, if there was some modification that she could make to her posting that would lessen the animosity that was being expressed. The answer, in a word, was no. At that point it was apparent that something ugly was going to happen and it did.
I enjoyed many of Heather's posts. I'm disappointed that she hasn't felt able to return.

Flatus,
I came here at the tail end of Heathers posts. Actually, I think she was already gone, but she came back a few times. I really liked her. She's such a burst of energy and usually had something positive to say.
The way she'd lose her temper was so different than the way mean posters that strategically attack (and I believe feel very unemotional when they are doing it). I don't think most here are that bothered by emotions and someone losing their temper occasionally. It's the ones that are so systematic about attacking us, one by one and on a daily basis, that are the problem.
