Who knew that an average of $3.88 per gallon for gasoline would ever be called "relief." But there you have it -- the traditional end-of-summer fall in prices might be in the works, according to the Energy Information Administration.
No one should be more relieved than John McCain and Barack Obama. Both presidential hopefuls ended up on the downside of high gas prices. More target than opportunity.
McCain gets hammered for taking big oil money, offering Democrats another chance to compare him to George W. Bush. Obama shifts around on the question of domestic drilling, giving rise to the dreaded flip-flopping charges.
And prices, as they usually do, rise or fall with politicians on the sidelines just talking. Now that prices might be dropping, at least they can stop talking about it.

I share some of the same memories with my Grandmother.I remember spending my summers in Oscoda,Michigan. We had cabins and motels right on Lake Huron and my Grandmother did all the laundry on an old ringer washer and hung all the linens out on the line and hand pressed all the sheets. My god that woman worked twelve hours a day every day! We cleaned all the units in the morning and did general maintainance including keeping the beach weed free.Oh how beautiful the white sandy beaches are in Northern Michigan. My Gram just died two years ago at the age of 94 in her sleep.Loved her and miss her greatly!

I think Obama isn't further ahead because he assumes all Hillary supporters won't care that he isn't choosing her at his running mate. He needs someone seasoned to balance the ticket, someone who has fought and won against the Repug attack machine. The race is his to lose... tossing out Hillary is one step towards heading for defeat, imho

Speaking of "jumping the shark" personalities-though some may believe he did this some time ago.
Apparently, Keith Olbermann told his audience that Dana Milbank WAPO ( former regular & favorite) who wrote about Obama's being presumptious & allegedly saying that 'he was the symbol....".at a dem. meeting last week , will no longer be appearing on Olbermann's show. It seems that Milbank did not provide an acceptable apology for daring to write a negative article about Obama & would no longer be welcome there. (Olbermann's statement is at Daily Kos--but for some reason could not link it)

Repel the calls to contain competitive markets By Alan Greenspan
"The surprise of recent months is not that global economic growth is slowing, but that there is any growth at all. The credit crunch of the past year has not followed the path of recent economically debilitating episodes characterised by a temporary freezing up of liquidity – 1982, 1989, 1997-8 come to mind. This crisis is different – a once or twice a century event deeply rooted in fears of insolvency of major financial institutions."

Yesterday the msm all had articles about Clinton saying that he was not racist and had never said anything bad or racist about Obama.
From politico:
"Say whatever you want about Bill Clinton, but it's deeply unfair to suggest his criticism of Obama was race-based,” McCain adviser Steve Schmidt told Politico, after his campaign blasted Obama for suggesting the McCain campaign would use his race against him. “We knew it was coming in our direction because they did it against a president of the United States of their own party.”
Many of Hillary's workers were AA. There is a bad feeling from the campaign workers and her some
supporters because Obama portrayed Clinton's as racist. His using the race card may come back to bite him in a bad way.

MSNBC is back to ragging on the Clintons. From their viewpoint maybe they feel if they can lower that image, then whomever Obama picks as VP won't suffer by comparison. Rachel Maddow was doing the same thing last night.
I think it just makes Obama look weak if he doesn't pick her. Every single quality that the talking heads say he needs for the ticket is present in one person. If he has so little confidence that he doesn't think he can hold the spotlight then maybe he better stop saying "Team of Rivals" is his favorite book because he is proving to be an emotional coward.
I think he is perfectly capable of wielding power well and he doesn't need the media making him look like a wimp.

"I really believe they ate as much or in some cases more...but the additives, preservatives etc were not in the food."
In most households, as a child, you ate breakfast with parents in the morning, hot lunch prepared at school or a bag lunch fixed by mother, sit down dinner at home.
The commute to work was within 15 minutes so people in the earliest suburbs weren't getting up at the crack of dawn to throw back black coffee while rushing to drop kids off at day care before their school day and get on the road. Coming home no drive through fast food before plopping down in front of TV and then collapsing into bed.
There is so much fat, sugar, and preservatives in food that it is almost impossible to buy anything packaged, bottled or boxed that doesn't contain stuff that shouldn't be consumed by anyone.

People aren't going to stop talking about gas prices just because it is under $4 per gallon. The democrats are losing on this one big time. Even with Pelosi's claim that she is working to save the world. It is just not a believable arguement that drilling won't help for ten years. Some can come on line sooner, and who thinks that a reliable long distance electric car will be here in less than then years. Moving away from fossel fuels has got to happen but the transition won't happen overnight.

Drilling is not the problem... Processing of the oil into usable fuel is where there is gross lack of capacity... Plus Americans are going to have to stop thinking it's their god given right to have as much oil as they want per capita and still at prices that keeps them smiling.

What is the problem with the leases already approved that aren't being drilled? There has to be some reason the oil folks keep wanting more without using what they already have.
Is it a case of the trial probes not working? If so, why not trade off for other areas? If they aren't using them because they are greedy for more and purposefully keeping them off line, then it should be use it or lose it before approving even one more acre.

And here's Bob Somerby calling some members of the media elite to task for their apparent efforts to lose an election.
"Herbert, meet Dowd--and meet narrative! All big Dems get tagged this way. But to Herbert, it's all about race. How our side loses elections."
He takes on Meet the Press (Lieberman/Kerry appearance) then dissects Herbert's weekend column along with MODO comparing Obama to Austen's Darcy, relating them back to attacks on Al Gore, summing up with: According to Herbert, Gore was condescending, supercilious, contemptuous, disdainful. He was smug & boorish--just as Kerry would turn out to be! By contrast, Bush was more of "an ordinary guy."
Eight years ago Herbert was applying these RNC frameworks to the smug, supercilious Dem. Today, these same frameworks get applied to Obama--and to Herbert, it's about race.
He says this even as he says that discussions of race could doom Obama. But then, our side is amost impossibly feckless. It's how John McCain could still win.

"Plus don't forget the rampant sexism many of you claim did Hillary's campaign in."
While I agree that Hillary would also be receiving incredible attacks, I take exception with your above conclusion.
I have never thought sexism killed her campaign. Not understanding the "democratic" system of delegates as well as they should have did that. (Too bad she didn't have the telecommunications crowd running it, like O did.)
The sexism infuriated me on many levels. Most women and men who were as offended as I was felt it was being leveled at all women. On another level, quite frankly, it pissed hell out of me -- and continues to do so -- that blatently sexist commentary was being met with a wink and a nudge while even referring to LBJ was decried as racist.
What this process has shown me is that the Democrats are every bit as sexist as their counterparts. I heard several fools on television and especially on c-span saying that we couldn't afford to offend the black community because they'd be lost forever -- AFTER they rioted in the streets of Denver. (What a stupid accusation to hurl at the black community, by the way.) But those women? Haw-haw, they'll come back around -- 'cause where else they gonna go?
And speaking for myself, Mama don't play that.

Robert Kennedy a big Green and strongly favors wind energy was asked by Larry King how about placing wind turbines off the Massachusetts coast, which Kennedy quickly replied it might cause disruption in the fishing industry. Quick forward 2 weeks ago, Barney Frank was asked about offshore drilling on the Massachusetts coast, which Frank said it would depend on the impact it might have on the fishing industry. LOL. Politicians answer to the energy crisis: We want to be energy independent, oil/gas drilling, solar, wind, wave, nuclear, coal, BUT.....

Here's just on example of the sexism that bubbles around on the "net" -- DISCLAIMER -- not to start a conversation about The Honeymooners. I thought it was lame all along, but that's not the point. I didn't particularly like I Love Lucy either....
An entertainment board I read had a thread started by a woman the other day. She said she'd forgotten how sexist The Honeymooners was. Good God, you'd have thought this woman was advocating mass castration.
Here's one of the first answers: "You could use a swift kick *POW* right in the vagina."
And then a bunch of others joined in...when several of us commented about the above a-hole statement, the boyz club said we just didn't understand humor and sarcasm....

She served for two years on her high school theater board, an elective position, and "really wanted to be president my senior year." But she didn't run. Why? Maybe my overly cynical brain is making this up, but didn't gas prices drop nicely right before the 2004 presidential election? Of course, it wasn't quite the huge issue it is now - Katrina hadn't happened, and the economy hadn't nosedived. The big issues were the Iraq War (for Democrats) and gay marriage (for Republicans). Still, I seem to remember something like that, though the past four years have led me to always think of the worst case scenario as a default.

Fry, like most energy related issues, it's a case of balancing competing economic interests, and the simple sounding solutions aren't as simple as they sound and don't exist in a vacuum.
http://www.mass-fish.org/social-wind.html
Both are important, both have advocates, and apparently, even environmentalists like Kennedy recognize the competing economic interests - the NE area has already lost multiple industries, and fishing is one of the ones that is left. If you've ever had anything to do with fisermen in NE, you'll understand that they won't go quietly.

You are missing the point. It isn't whether people care or don't care about the Clintons, it is whether or not Sen. Obama can assume the reins of power from them and not suffer by comparison. It is that strength to hold your position in space that matters.
If you try to make others look small then it diminishes you. If you aren't afraid for others to have power and credit, then it makes you look bigger.
The attack the Clinton airtime from the media takes the spotlight away from Obama and makes him look small and petty. BTW, Big Dog isn't looking all that great either at the moment for the same reason except that he is sucking up the oxygen in the room.

One of the qualities that several ex-pols in the position to even consider a VP pick (i.e. top party contender) have mentioned is the ability to take direction or in other words, do what you told to do. Now, assuming that's important, I don't see HRC as that personality.

" fishing is one of the ones that is left."
And over fishing because of food demands has depleted fish stocks so badly that fisherman are having to venture farther out with greater dangers. There probably needs to be an extended moratorium to allow fish to replenish, but that would destroy the livelihoods of the industry.
Other energy solutions that would create more pollution doesn't help the fishing either. In one case it is too many mouths to feed and in the other too many cars to feed.

When she disagreed with her husband, she did so in private and then went in public to utter the administration position. After losing, the nomination she turned around and immediately appeared and cheered for Obama. She is a loyal Democrat and has the good sense to state her position out of the glare of cameras.
What to do with Bill? Too simple. If you are the Democratic president of the US with the power to ask people to "serve at your pleasure", you send your best asset out to do the humanitarian work for the US that he is already doing for his private charity. The difference as President, you get credit for ordering the response.
That is what holding the reins of power means. You give the orders. The best and brightest of your people go out and do what you tell them to do.

“Did you mix movie stars and politicians on purpose? I am having a hard time connecting Jane Fonda's workout video helping HRC. “
“Fonda has served as an activist for many political causes, one of the most notable and controversial of which was her opposition to the Vietnam War. She has also protested the Iraq War and violence against women.
Fonda has been a longtime supporter of feminist causes, including V-Day, a movement to stop violence against women, inspired by the off-Broadway hit The Vagina Monologues, of which she is an honorary chairperson. She was present at their first summit in 2002, bringing together founder Eve Ensler, Afghan women oppressed by the Taliban, and a Kenyan activist campaigning to save girls from genital mutilation.”
Guess you had to be there at that time and it’s unfortunate that you think workout videos are all the legacy she will leave.

Before you start the inevitable name calling (the last refuge in a failed argument) I suggest that you do a little homework on PUMA.
So interesting that now that it can have little (if any) impact on the nomination, Obama wants to seat the MI and FLA delegations at full strength. He's fine with it as long as the DNC's soviet-style process is in place (one person / one vote / one candidate).
Big Dawg was right: Obama is a good politician.
Whether he's constitutionally eligible is another story.
Oh and by the way, PUMA exists because the big picture is so very troubling.

I was pointing out that there were many women from different backgrounds who were involved in the women’s moment very early on. And, some stars people go on to be involved in politics. Also love Susan Saradon and her husband for their political work and their professional careers. I happen to like Jane Fonda who has been denigrated by the right wing press too much. I was in and around those protests and riots on the Ohio State campus during the Vietnam War when she was getting much bad press. There are a lot of women in Appalachia whose lives are quite cheap right now. They stand in food lines for their families on a weekly basis…when the food banks have food for them!! It’s the same mostly throughout the US now. That’s why we can’t afford another Bush in the WH. I think you and I agree more than disagree.

I don't know if you think maintaining proper tire inflation and having regular engine service will increase performance and mileage. I do and the article PROVIDED a figure of @7%. Which for my old chevy pickup would mean an increase a average from about 15.5 to 17 mpg in both local and highway driving. And that 1-2 mpg increase is about all I 've ever heard from anyone I've listened to in my life on the subject.
As the article and Jamie commented yesterday; extrapolate that to millions of cars and in my mind it doesn't require statistics, a physics degree or a PP presentation to believe our nation's gasoline consumption would decrease by an approximate amount. I think that would in turn show up in similar decrease in pump price as demand would be lower. I'm sure I'm missing something so help me out.
Now, that's not the solution to our energy problems but it's help. And Champ's suggestion that pump price is a mixture of demand and industry BS is probably accurate too.

"I don't see her as a good second chair. "
Agree with Rez on this. I don't want to see her anywhere near the Chicago mob.

In Lansing yesterday, they interviewed a few women who were former Clinton supporters who now fully supported Obama. However, they both said they wished that Obama would pick Clinton as his running mate. I have also heard people say whether or not they vote for Obama depends on who he chooses as his running mate.

"If Hillary were the nominee, I would not be enthusiastic about it. But I cannot imagine being on a website tearing her down daily either. "
BS again. YOu spent the primary yapping away at how polarizing she was -- all that "just not this woman" BS. Face it, you have a problem with other women....

"I’ll only make a general statement here not wanting to step on anyone’s self esteem."
Why would that offend anyone Karo -- it's the first positive thing I've seen you say about women since you showed up here.

jamie, all of that has merit, but those are not the concerns that are at issue between the wind farmers and the fishermen. The New England commercial fisheries have been fishing the Grand Banks and Georges Banks for more than a century - and they want to keep fishing them and will fight to do so. That's where the issue of over fishing probably is the keenest, but that's not where the windfarms will be for the most part - those will be closer in, in shallower waters, and will affect a smaller portion of the fishing fleet that operate smaller boats. The ones at issue are proposed for Horseshoe Shoal in Nantucket Sound and should in part at least be within sight of Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard - which are the rough boundaries of the area at issue, which if you'll recall was an issue for Ted Kennedy that led to accusations of hypocrisy on the part of the Kennedy family because of his apparent NIMBY stance. That area is fished by medium sized trawlers for finfish, flukes and squid, and the efforts of the fishermen are to have appropriate mitigation measures put in place to allow for continued, albeit reduced, fishing of the area. Overfishing is a different issue, that will not be addressed directly as part of this issue. These areas have limits in place as it is, and the development of the wind farms will reduce fishing in the area by necessity.

Oh, and jamie, it's a long read, but the report I linked is a very interesting study that addresses many of the issues surrounding wind farms and fishing - I think you'd enjoy it.

Sorry if I messed up the namr othe poster.
The comment was meant for whoever confuses concern and outrage over the manipulation of the nomination process with "spite".

Karolenna,
You may truly have run into a scrutiny process yesterday. I wasn't around enough to have a clue. My guess is that you may have tried to post more than two links in the same post. We've read often here that two is the maximum.

Frankly, Patsi, I saw that you and your partners on here were talking about someone talking offensively or something like that to you last night. I did not know if you were talking about me or someone else, because I did not mean to say anything to you that was offensive. Almost always you come back to me for something I've said and slam me thinking that because I did not support Hilliary Clinton this time that I am anti-woman. If I said anything to you last night that you thought was offensive, it was not meant to be. I'm just getting sick and tired of the venting on here. It's like anyone who comes on who does not agree with you and the "regulars" are called anything.
I say women make their way in this world the same as anyone else. I've worked hard all my life and frankly because I had a husband who was severely ill most of our 30 years together, I worked harder than most sometimes holding my regular position and taking on other positions to get my family by. But, I do not feel that anybody owes me anything.
Almost everything you say is so polarizing to just about everyone, even those you seem to like. I just don’t understand it.
