Dem Base Closing Ranks

| | Comments (258)

Setting aside crabby pundits like me, there is no denying an afterglow in Denver today following Hillary Rodham Clinton's spellbinder speech on Tuesday night.

Perhaps Barack Obama's supporters had set the bar so low for what Clinton needed to do that it was not such a hard target after all. Despite saying little more about Obama than she has said since quitting the Democratic race, Clinton's job was made easier by her party's desperation to at least create the appearance of togetherness.

Democrats are brushing away any grumbling about Clinton's failure to specifically recant harsh primary rhetoric, such as dismissing Obama's readiness to be commander in chief. With Election Day around the corner, Democrats are facing the reality that time is up for intra-party squabbling.

Having solidified the base, Sen. Clinton and fellow conventioneers look to Bill Clinton's speech tonight for the final piece of the puzzle - opening the argument to swing voters that Obama is for them.

Sen. Clinton's speech on Tuesday was exclusively aimed at wavering Democrats as she forcefully made the case that party issues are too important to abandon Obama.

Former Pres. Clinton now must do what he did so well in the latter primaries - persuading moderate-to-conservative independents that Obama is not the risky choice that Republicans portray.

Your old soldiers may have spent too long listening to their own war stories. Most soldiers don't disparage the service of others; they simply recognize that all wore the uniform and did what was asked of them.

More specifically, people in the Army Air Forces during WWII suffered horrendous casualties. Perhaps the most horrifying statistic is that of all the casualties in that branch (more than 85,000) better than 80-percent were fatalities.

Although they seldom were bayoneted, becoming a crispy critter was the form of death most experienced.

I've never heard a POW brag about being a prisoner. The ones I've know from Vietnam talked about the brutality of their captivity. But, most of all, they talked about their love of country and the personal bonds that helped one another survive.

  5. If there are more souls entering hell, as republicans and the murderous foreign dictators they love die off, and if the boundaries of hell are fixed and immovable, then the place must be heating up. As souls enter from the larger and expanding universe into a confined space, Boyle's Law should apply.

However, if the container which is hell is not fixed in its volume, but rather expands as the rest of the Universe expands, then resultant cooling and entropy might overbalance any heating caused by the entry of souls.

Does anyone here have an equation for this?

  11. I ain't ready to change the subject, yet. I am anticipating Bill's speech tonight. I feel he will , at last, attack Bush-Cheney with a few morsels about what a failed two terms have done to the country. He then needs to tie into his policies which left the nation in surplus at his exit. Then he must prop up Obama with at least faint hopeful praise that Obama can point us forward, toward fiscal health . This will be a stretch, as Obama has committed his presidency to waginf all-out war in Afghanistan, but Bill's gotta try. This may be Bill's last stand...expect a great speech.

There's something called the marginal propensity to spend. It's been a really long time since I heard the term, but, in the context of being rich, it suggests that no matter how much money you have, it's always less than what you want.

Therefore, most people never consider themselves to be rich. They'll use euphemisms such as 'comfortable', 'well-to-do', or 'well-off', or variations on those themes.

In my own mind, I would need about $5-million to consider myself comfortable. To be rich? Perhaps $100-million.

  21. I'm thrilled that Senator Clinton honored the suffragettes, including Harriet Tubman, who was as ardently involved in the suffrage struggle as she was in the Underground Railroad.

Thanks to the success of Harriet Tubman and other amazing suffragettes, women now have voices and choices!

We can ELECT a great candidate like Obama!

But most people are totally in the dark about HOW the suffragettes won, and what life was REALLY like for women before they did.

"The Privilege of Voting" is a new free e-mail series that follows eight great women from 1912 - 1920 to reveal ALL that happened to set the stage for women to win the vote.

This is no boring history report. It's a real-life soap opera!

Two beautiful and extremely powerful suffragettes -- Alice Paul and Emmeline Pankhurst are featured, along with Edith Wharton, Isadora Duncan, Alice Roosevelt and two gorgeous presidential mistresses.

There are tons of heartache for these heroines on the rocky road to the ballot box, but in the end, they WIN!

Exciting, sequential 10-minute e-mail episodes are perfect for coffeebreaks, or anytime.

You are wrong again. With the MO video(s), there is nothing to do but wait. The Muslim education story has been around a long time. It resurfaced because the Indonesian school record itself resurfaced in connection with the COLB investigation.
    ==========================
    The COLB story:

"The proverbial ball got rolling on June 10, when Jim Geraghty, reporting on the Campaign Spot, a National Review blog, cited the "unlikely" but still circulating rumor that Obama was born not within the United States, but elsewhere, possibly Kenya. Geraghty said the Obama campaign could "debunk" the rumors about his birth simply by releasing a copy of his birth certificate, but the campaign has so far chosen not to do that."

    http://polarik.blogtownhall.com/2008/07/03/obamas_birth_certificate_the_true_birth_order_of_the_faked_images!.thtml
    -----------------------------------------------
"To get everyone up to speed, there has been one, and only one forged image. From this one source image, several copies were generated. One was kept by the Obama campaign while one copy went to the Daily Kos, and the other went to FactCheck. Both the Daily Kos and the Obama campaign cropped their images before posting them on June 12. The Obama Campaign posted a very small, low-res copy to their "Fight the Smears" website, while the Daily Kos image was cropped close to the borders but left in its original size. FactCheck posted their uncropped image to their website four days later on June 16."

I owe you one. Or, in an expanding universe, maybe even more. How about this:

Look for republicans to promote 'an inflation ameliorating tax proposal' that tries to convince you that rich people are more adversely affected by inflation than poor people. F'rinstance, a clerk with 2 kids netting $30,000/year has lost $9,000/yr in earning power due to the mccaincheneybush inflation, whereas infamous Countrywide CEO Mozila has lost $16 million/yr in earning power. Our biggest 'economic engines' 'need' a tax break 'to balance off' the amount of value that the mccaincheneybush inflation has caused. Otherwise, 'good' people like Mozila won't be able to continue 'adding' to our economy and 'providing employment' so that we untouchables can experience 'the American dream,' however briefly.

  35. Embrace of Barack a repudiation of Bill

History, we are told, often repeats itself. That’s why it’s fitting that the Democrats will nominate Barack Obama for president in Denver tomorrow night, and not Hillary Clinton.

Exactly 100 years ago the Democrats last met in the Mile High City and nominated the Barack Obama of that era for president.

His name was William Jennings Bryan and he moved the Democratic Party from a more conservative post-Civil War bent into a populist direction that eventually led to Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal and Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society.

William Jennings Bryan would be proud.
Bill Clinton less so, regardless of what he says tonight.
But Clinton was twice elected president, and Bryan lost three times.
    We’ll see about Obama.
