It is difficult to tell which is worse for Hillary Rodham Clinton -- what her campaign staff memos reveal or that her staff revealed them.
The massive leak of inside dope on the Clinton primary campaign is remarkable in the annals of presidential election history. Not sure I've ever seen anything like it. The disloyalty to the candidate is breathtaking.
What does it say about Sen. Clinton that so many aides were willing to share private matters publicly? Clearly, many are eager to shift blame to her and away from themselves. That is not particularly new for losing bids.
But giving so many campaign documents to the press? That suggests a certain hostility between candidate and underlings that should give pause to those who believed that Clinton was ready "on day one" to take command of the White House.
Beyond this mutiny, the behind-the-scenes paperwork shows how Clinton horribly mismanaged her own people. Postponing critical decisions until the roof caved in, and then forcing her staff to manage the damage control. Not a pretty picture for running the country.

If Democrats want to win this election, it is essential that Senator Clinton be the nominee for President.
Wake up Democrats!

I personally don't feel she mismanaged as much as she opted not to take the low road. She was too concerned with maintaining her dignity and with the good of the party -- ironic, since they then turned around and kicked her in the teeth. She is still worried about the good of the party as she campaigns for BO -- I can't imagine her heart is in it, especially after the low road he took against her, but still she perserveres. That is one tenacious woman and she really does deserve our respect and not the ridicule and villification she receives daily in the press.

CatBalu,
I completely agree with your post:
"I personally don't feel she mismanaged as much as she opted not to take the
low road."
For the media to suggest that any one thing lost Hillary the nomination is
absurd. The media's complete subjective love affair with Obama and Camp
Obama's constant labeling of the Clinton's as racists, Hiilary refusal to attack
Obama with nuclear-negative assaults and label him as un-American, Obama surrogates trashing Bill Clinton's character and presidency, the travesty of how the DNC lined up against Hillary in their back-stabbing, back-room handling of Michigan and Florida voters ALL contributed to why Hillary lost.
For all the "political analysts" to begin circling like sharks over "The Altantic"
article's memos is inane, petty and myopic.

I agree that the postponement of decissions is killing, and am a bit at unease that HRC postponed critical decissions...... I think the whole campaign came as a shock, ue to the xpolsion of BO, there was no detailed plan B, and that killed her....
On the other hand, one cannot rule by herself. If the input she gets from the aides is bad, her decissions will be also... I guess..
But, this leak to the press is interesting Craig. I do feel you. I think this election made one thing clear. The Clintons are/ were surrounded by shallow people who did not do things to her benefit and are not fit for the title: loyalists, but were there to collect a pyacheck; have no morals at all as to the being faithful to someone.
The Clintons need to start building, cause their coalition, so called firewall, is not only in shambles, it is not repairable..
What to em is continuously striking is how these things end up in the press....Please refer to my commnets yesterday...Striking that everytime HRC surfaces (one way or the other) it is to dampen teh surge of JmC.... Do it on your own Sir...Please do it on your own. If you have the change mantra, you sure as hell no how to do it on your own!

Clinton was a mess as a candidate and probably would have been worse as a president. Refusing to deal with the reality that she has ran her campaign so badly that she was out of the running before she really started winning. Then the arrogance of running up a 20 million debt because of her unwillingness or inability to face reality then expecting Obama to pay for her narcissism. We are fortunate that she did not get the nomination as she is in love with power and would have said anything and did to try and get it. We are better off with both of the Clintons just going away.

CatBalu;......You're right!!!!
prof marcia; 1:48 am...... I agree with you also, to a point. I fimly believe that most of the discredit that comes upon Hillary is mostly media contrivance.
The way the press treated them when Bill was president, and when he was campaigning for her. David Shuster saying that they were "pimping" Chelsea, KO's rants, Rachael Maddow, and Michelle Bernard, msnbc has to be in the tank totally for obama. Jack Cafferty, and others who will brook no disagreement. They all know that if Hillary were to win, the access of the press to the WH would diminsh "a bunch", and who could blame her, not me - if they had of said that about my daughter, I'd be suing the network's ass off.
And we all know that "sources" get paid, especially by scum like the enquirer.
I see that Cindy Sheehan has qualified to run against ms. pelosi......Go Cindy.............

It is sad that some people can´t imagine that none of these two remaining candidates have the ability to lead in my opinion.
The moment you don´t fall in line behind BO you are an angry frustrated Clintonista not willing ot see the big picture. LOL
Well, I am certainly not an angry frustrated Clintonista. I am an American who is seeing that either JmC or BO will be major steps back for our country. I am therefore not voting in November. I am aware that JmC can become the president. But , I do not see major differences with either Him or BO running the country. it is plusses and minusses in both camps and when you come to the end conclusion, we are better off withouth both of them.
There......my reasoning for not voting in November
Is anyone seeing that Michael Phelps(swimming) is on course to take 9 golds. He is allready at # 5......

Interesting. I see your point, Craig, but pretty much disagree with you.
For one thing, if her workers leaked any of this because they were afraid they'd be blamed, I think they were right. They don't show themselves in a good light, fighting rather than working with each other. There have apparently been leaks all along, and you know Hillary didn't do it.
Another thing they have proved is that Hillary knew what was right and wrong, and did the right thing. Bush
was stubborn in doing the wrong thing because he didn't know the difference between right and wrong..
And above all else, even with a staff un-equal to the task, she still matched Obama head-to-head.
The primaries she won were all secret ballots, not an exhibit in front of powerful figures.
Obssessive and rigidly disciplined people might be great in secret ops, but it can be scary in ordinary life.

LA Times editorial yesterday, on Hillary Clinton's desire for "catharsis".
...in her words, "I know from just what I'm hearing that there's incredible pent-up desire, and I think that people want to feel like, 'OK, it's a catharsis, we're here, we did it, and then everybody get behind Sen. Obama.' "
We don't know how familiar Clinton is with ancient Greek tragedy, but the use of the term "catharsis" will seem ominous to those who are. According to Aristotle's "Poetics," catharsis (sometimes translated as "purgation") occurs when the audience at a drama experiences a scene -- such as Oedipus' discovery that he has married his mother and killed his father -- that arouses "pity and fear."
.... The party can only hope that that catharsis will purge the Clinton holdouts of their refusal to recognize reality. If not, the party could be headed for a real tragedy.

It won't be a tragedy for the Democratic party only. This country cannot stand another 4 years of GOP in the White House.
Yesterday AG Mukasey announced that Dept of Justice staff who were hired for their political affiliations (conservative GOP) will keep their jobs. They are political appointees who now have civil service protection. Those who were screened out by the DOJ's illegal hiring practices are welcome to apply anew.
Time to cut this stuff out.

More likely, uncompromising Clinton supporters will experience those emotions not when Clinton is given her due but when Obama officially clinches the nomination.
The above paragraph is from that same opinion piece.
Wait until we have a nominee. Then we can decide what we want to do.
I'm suspicious that Craig is just trying to pull the party together. As in: Be good children: get in line. Not yet.

Good morning, thought some of you might enjoy this article- Hillary Earned A Roll Call
http://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/martinez/story/1175422.html
The laying blame on Hillary instead of acknowledging that she chose to take the high road in not attacking Obama's "lack of american roots" and not releasing the tape, is just more of the same from the biased media. The emails don't expose and aren't in line with the media's meme of her being ruthless, her irrational ambition, Hillary will say or do anything to get elected -but it is in line with their own actions of slanted, warped (journalism?) Not directing this at you Craig or including you in the biased media - was thankful during the primary and remain so for your own unique voice. We just happen to disagree on this one.

dog,
Just what would make you happy in regard to the way Senator
Clinton should mend the division in the party?
She's already given endless speeches in support of Obama and smilingly stood beside him at several events. She has dutifully not signed
the official form to put her name into nomination at the convention. She has
consistently instructed her supporters to vote for Obama.
If there are still large numbers of people not on Obama's team,
please give specific instructions as to how Senator Clinton should
inspire these folks with Obama spirit.

Rick Martinez in his opinion piece from the Raleigh News Observer:
"I'm not misty-eyed enough to forget that the main reason Clinton is considered presidential material is because she's married to a former president."
===========
Hillary is a groundbreaker and deserves credit and recognition for her historic run.
I think she would get more if she was not intent on dragging it out of people.
A bit of graciousness: "I can't allow a roll call to potentially divide the party, the primary is over and we have a winner -- this is Senator Obama's moment" -- would have gone a long way toward keeping the momentum going against McCain, rather than providing this side show.
It would serve her better in the long run too. Soft skills are important. You cannot get what you want solely through power grabs. (Learn from W.)
Posted by: dog's eye view | August 13, 2008 7:49 AM
Agree with CatBalu. Hil'ry took the high road, McCain takes the low road...and Mac beats BO on the bonnie, bonnie banks of November.
But Craig, don't you think that maybe she decided to do that because the media would've been all over her if she had done that to their darling? The GOP can get away with it; another Dem, no way.
She would've lost voters and maybe some of the primaries that she ended up winning late in the season as people started to question what BO was really all about. (I haven't gotten a clear answer on that yet.) She made the right move.
At least some folks can change their assumptions about Craig after this article. As most of us can see, he's very equal-opportunity when it comes to political views.
As for disloyalty, can anyone in politics really be trusted to have anyone's back? How long ago were these memos actually made available? Maybe right after BO was announced lord-n-savior? As he has lost his minty freshness, do they have any regrets about doing so? Are they thinking that maybe they should've stuck by Hil'ry because BO is gonna lose & she's gonna be the nom in 2012?
Tried to turn on MoJo out of habit. MSNBC had Russia/Georgia women's beach volleyball. Really? Were they expecting a fight like at the Russian/Hungarian men's water polo match in the 50s? As the announcer said, the Georgian team is made up of Brazilians given citizenship to play for Georgia, so there's not a lot of hostility. Wanna bet the producers who decided to air that match didn't know that? Would this match have been covered if it weren't for the conflict?
We're not gonna play with you if you can't be nice.

That is why all the blame and all the talk about the Clintons continues...Blame her....we have no fault...

Jason: if she wanted to tamp down the PUMAs and talk of a roll call, she could have done it. She did not . It's more important that her supporters see the big picture -- electing the Democrat who prevailed in the primaries, by party rules freely available to both campaigns' staffs -- than in recognition of "them" -- which is actually recognition of her.
Even leaving the impression she wanted to take this to the convention, when it was clear her chances of prevailing were so slim, and she really would have ripped the party apart....
Yeah, she could do a lot more.

Because she owes it to the party? Because they've all been so good to her that she needs to repay them for their support?
Is it Dean she owes it to? Does she owe it to her supporters (who don't want her to cave in)?
After the convention, she'll be right there supporting the party. Because she wants whats best for this country. Until then, leave her alone and let your guy do his own work for a change.

It is tiresome and inaccurate to continue to blame Hillary Clinton.
Time to step up to the plate, accept responsibillity for

With all the backbiting between parties, the contents never attack her. If she made a serious error, it was expecting campaign people to be as decent as she seems to be. If that is a mistake in judgement, then more people should be like her.
The complete betrayal with the leaked memos tells me that someone was double dealing right from the beginning, probably in the pay or with loyalties to another campaign team. Whoever that person or persons were should never be allowed near another campaign purely on the basis ofm if you will shaft one employer for your own gain, you will shaft another for the next highest biddger.

""I can't allow a roll call to potentially divide the party, the primary is over and we have a winner -- "
People who keep saying this just don't seem to realize that it would require a rule change. Now I realize that the Democratic party has changed rules at every opportunity to screw with Sen. Clinton and benefit Sen. Obama, but wiping out the party obligation for several thousand people to vote as they were elected to do by the population of their states is going a bit far.
Those people have paid a minimum of $5,000 each (most more) for only one privilege: To stand up when their state is called and cast their vote for their pledged candidate.
This desire of supporters of Sen Obama to wipe out the basic rules of a Democratic society is a little frightening and does not reflect well on him.

Dog,
"Even leaving the impression she wanted to take this to the convention, when it was clear her chances of prevailing were so slim, and she really would have ripped the party apart...."
The media can't find statements where she said anything of the sort, so they quote each other "thinking" of "what she REALLY meant" or cut and paste things she does say to make it sound as if she said those things and then the Obama folk fall for it hook, line, and sinker.
She has appeared everywhere he asked her to appear. She has supported his nomination. She has encouraged others to vote for him in November. The only thing she asked is that her supporters be allowed to cast the votes they earned the right to cast even without her name in nomination and with no nominating speeches.
It's a shame all of her supporters can't commit mass suicide to make the Obama people happy, but then we couldn't march in lock step and robotically cast our votes for the ONE and then hold up our purple fingers later to prove it really is still a Democracy.

mornin' all.
dog, with all due respect, your argument is full of crap. Obama's support is weaker in the party than you will admit so you and the rest of his rabid supporters are pulling an Axelrod and trying to blame his lack of support on Clinton, to demonize her for his inability to draw that broad support for his vague promise of change and to change the convention rules to make up for his failings and avoid your fear that the superdelegates won't vote as they have said they will. (Using "you" & "your" royally, not individually). NO democratic nominee for president, at least since democratic conventions began being televised, ever won (or lost for that matter) after being nominated at a convention without the names of the other candidates being placed in nomination. It should not happen this time just because Obama's supporters fear that he doesn't have the support necessary among the superdelegates to maintain his aura in the face of normal convention procedures. FWIW, I don't think placing Clinton's name in nomination will cause the upheavel the insecure Obama supporters appear to be afraid of, and if Obama is as good a condidate as you believe, he should be able to beat McCain handily after securing the nomination - and despite his lackluster polling, he still appears to have sufficient support to win enough states to win in the electoral college, so stop acting like the only way he can win is by being unopposed in the convention. Or keep it up and continue to show your lack of confidence in your candidate.
Baaaa, baaaa.

What sheep you are-- I guess with your name you've chosen you are trying to insult Hillary supporters. So sorry, but it isn't even close to working as we know better than others that there is no comparison to sheep when it comes to Hillary supporters. The majority are lifelong democrats who have examined their conscience and painfully decided to not follow party lines for the first time in their lives. They have in fact been threatened, been accused of being racist, been mocked and name called yet bravely stand firm in their convictions. They are not blindly falling in, not being sheepled into voting for a candidate because of their party affiliation, instead they have in their opinion chosen country over Party.

"Phelps, with water in his goggles, trailed Moss Burmester of New Zealand by .03 second at the 50-meter split in his butterfly race, then took the lead and was under world-record pace the rest of the way. After the finish, he ripped off his cap and goggles and threw them onto the pool deck.
``I couldn't see anything for the last 100, my goggles pretty much filled up with water, it just kept getting worse and worse through the race,'' Phelps said."

I'm dealing with food poisoning and so this will be brief but I am now as stunned by reaction to Craig's post as I first was when and evangelical Christian tried to tell me that because the bible "family tree" had the ages of everyone total 3000 years or so, that is the true age of the earth...
Did I see someone was blaming this Clinton issue on the press? I have said since last fall that I didn't think she manage campaigns well. If you think that she was trying to deal with people that were foisted upon her, it doesn't take a competent manager very long to figure out if her team is working well with her and for her. She didn't owe anything to her husband to use any of these incompetent putz's yet she used them anyway.
You say she didn't want to sink to the low road...that's true but I think only because she knew it would push her unfavorables over 50% and into the unelectable category in the general. She acted like a candidate who expected the nomination to be handed to her, very much in the same way McCain is campaigning now.
As for Obama, his biggest problem is that he is getting the scrutiny from the press and many voters that they now regret not giving George W. Bush in the last 2 elections. They chose to blindly ignore the patterns of failures in W's life they are fearful that Obama will yield similar results. I can understand the reasoning behind the argument. So far, Obama hasn't been a failure in his life, hasn't needed his President father and rich friends to bail him out of any messes.
This election will be decided upon the question of whether we want the US to be in a constant war with someone. McCain will try to fight wherever he can to prove that even tough guys have to surrender and I think Obama will do what he can to avoid them in order to use those monies for domestic purposes.

I can understand staying home, voting for a third party candidate, or voting for Obama with less than blissful enthusiasm. But voting for McCain after all we have been through in the last seven years? I doubt there is enough to sway the election, but there is enough to make a difference in Presidential favorability, mandate, and dealings with Congress.

And some on this site have been blaming the women for everything.
Obama's problem with white, male voters
"THE MOST remarkable fact of the 2008 presidential election is that it remains a close race. Democrats have not known such favorable political terrain since 1932, yet what should be a blowout is looking like a blanket finish.
The fundamental reason is white men. Like Al Gore in the summer of 2000, Barack Obama is roughly splitting white women. But only 34 to 37 percent of white men support Obama, according to the Gallup Poll's latest weekly index of 6,000 voters

I'm pretty shocked by this too Craig... I used to be an avid viewer of the soap ANOTHER WORLD and as dramas go, this one has the intrigue, back-stabbing, cheating and lying. What I have particularly learned from all the leaked papers is that Mark Penn really is a nasty person. I can truly understand why Obama supporters do not want to help Hillary reduce her campaign debt when he was behind a lot of the ideas for negative campaigning. Also, he's like a pig in the trough. How much money did he suck up from hard working people who contributed to Hillary's campaign because they wanted to help her? It just makes me shudder.
I still believe in Hillary, but it's clear she was poorly served by many around her and primarily from HOG PENN.

"It would have been better to put this language in the platform: “A woman who wildly mismanages and bankrupts a quarter-of-a-billion-dollar campaign operation, and then blames sexism in society, will dampen the dreams of our daughters.”

"It's a shame all of her supporters can't commit mass suicide to make the Obama people happy, but then we couldn't march in lock step and robotically cast our votes for the ONE and then hold up our purple fingers later to prove it really is still a Democracy."

Too bad all of this had to happen as I believe that a good campaign does not equate into a good presidency.

Craig
I guess the question that comes to mind is why do they read this blog. It can't be for our brilliance. (although some of us are) And most of the opinions given are of the uninformed coffee shop variety. I can hear much the same disscussion going on around me at the local McD's on a Saturday morning. It even has the mentally unbalanced running around shouting to the world. So any way...........
