Only three times in the past century has such an anti-democratic nation as China enjoyed the honor of hosting the Olympics. In 1936 it was Nazi Germany. In 1980 it was the Soviets.
And now it is China, a regime no less tyrannical than the hosts in Berlin and Moscow of Olympics past. While Americans rejoice in the achievements of swimmer Michael Phelps and others, we ought to be mindful of the cost.
Giving an authoritarian kingdom such as China the legitimacy of a world stage is beyond the pale. Why is this happening? The nations of the world have been lured into this madness by a sort of blindness to how China represents the perfect opposite to the freedom and peace that the Olympics ought to be about.
The only hope is that, as in Berlin and Moscow, the doors that these Olympics open will present the beginning of the end of its host regime.

What the world keeps forgetting much to its sorrow is that China has been a world power for thousands of years. The form of its tyranny may change but the basic nature is to be cooperative as a society and think long term. Through all the cycles it continues to rise again with it's millions of miles and millions of people
In a global world where corporations look to the next quarter, it might be in their interest to watch closely a country that is thinking about the next century.

...and remember how Jimmy Carter pulled USA out of the Moscow 1980 Olympics?
What I wonder about is how could the swim-cube have cost $200 million to build?
Another fiasco is how the hosts make people stand outside a venue for DAYS hoping for tickets to a cherished event...denied tickets...and over HALF the seating areas are empty. Nearly all the VIP seats are empty for ALL the events at all the venues.

Craig - not sure that I agree with your conclusions, altho I'm with you on points.
There's legitimacy and there's reality. I don't see letting China host the Olympics as conferring the former as it is dealing with reality. China is there and is humongous and it isn't going away. It also isn't going to change just because we won't play with it. In fact, it might take its toys back.
Also, Mexico City hosted the Olympics - and its government is repressive and corrupt as the day is long.
But there's another side to this, and that is what the world is seeing of China, and I don't mean tourism.
It gives me chills to think of the determination to best us in medals - the rigidity of the government is not a pleasant thing to think of. Those athletes lives have not been their own since they were born; it makes a nice medal count but the cost is obvious. Those poor people exist for the glory of the state, not vice versa, and it is obvious. A little girl is not pretty enough to sing in front of the world? That world knows how to interpret that.
One more thing I found chilling was the opening show.
It was gorgeous to look at but beneath the beauty was the automaton like performances of the people, and the great number of people. I find it hard to concieve of that many people - it's its own planet. The size of China's population is important not only because of the need to feed it. I wouldn't mind seeing China become a federation of states, broken down into units of a size that can be worked with.
China's cheating and problems are open now more than ever before.

Craig,
Considering that China could at the drop of a hat, become a Lorena Bobbitt to the economy's of most country's in this world, it's not a surprise that everyone is going out of their way to try and legitimize the government there.
I suppose that one advantage that the Chinese have over the Russians and Nazi's is that they have so many of their citizens firmly entrenched in the US. Heck, one of the first things I looked for after my move to Texas was the comfort of a Chinese restaurant.
I think that they benefit from the fact that many American kids have had some type of connection to Chinese culture though Kung Fu movies or Bruce Lee and there was never any type of crossover star for the USSR or the Reich.
All in all, I think many people realize that they can't beat China economically right now so they are content to beat them in the field of athletics instead...

1. Barack Obama had Indonesian citizenship
2. Barack Obama had the legal name Barry Soetoro

Ah, Craig, you are an eternal optimist in many ways. Don't you realize that nobody beyond a few patchouli-wearing hippies from Berkeley really care about what's going on in China, or anywhere else, for that matter? As long as the pizza comes in 30 minutes or less, we can download 'My Humps' as our cellphone ring tones, and gas prices are less than what minium wage is per gallon, we'll all continue to be distracted by the shiny bells and whistles that are the Olympics. Hell, just this morning I had to explain to someone that Georgia was ALSO a nation to the north and east of the country of Turkey, and NOT JUST A STATE IN 'MERIKUH and that the state of Georgia, USA, was NOT being invaded by Communists from Russia.
I shit you not.
Please excuse my bitterness, but I am still quite disgusted by this morning's conversation. If I haven't slit my wrists by morning, it'll be a goddamn miracle.

Jamie - I agree that so far China seems to want the approval of the world. We certainly can't afford to smack her in the face.

Good Morning Craig!
I think it is shortsighted to make this statement.... China is China and wil remain China.
The US has an open culture but lots is wrong in this country. Texas is putting people on deathrow like it is nothing.
I mean we mustn´t be too teary eyed when we talk about China.
We in the US don´t seem to be better...If ya catch my drift.
Sorry, hope I don´t step on peoples toes with my assertion
Posted by: Jason | August 14, 2008 2:30 AM
Jason - I'm not sure which statement you think is short-sighted, Craig's or what you thought I meant?
I'm not teary-eyed about China at all. I'm gob-smacked by the size of her population. She has a
phenominally interesting and even awesome history, but anyone studying it has to be strong when the numbers of dead start rolling out.
No matter what, you sure didn't step on my toes. You were adding to the conversation and that's what I'm here for. Keep on talking.

In regard to China and the Olympics--
I read that there is a big problem with low attendance at the Olympic events.
I saw pictures of all the empty seats and rows and rows of empty spaces in the stands at many of the events.
Not sure why the sparse turnout, but it's an embarrassment to the Chinese government according to the news report.

Hey Beth..
I was referring to the blog started by Craig. I think we should stop trying to think that China is all bad. We often forget how cruel we in the US are with regards to human rights.
I thik it is hypocritical to continue to slander China, while we are not fairing better in the US.
I know the statement I made will not be liked by many, but frankly it is only my opinion.
Don´t worry all, we only have to live with Ricey for another 4 months...LOL :-)

That is very true marcia.....
But I cannot seem to understand why, some three months ago, we got news broadcasts from all over stating that everything was sold out....Huh?
Last week RTL news here in Holland siad that hotels were lowering its prices from roughly $700 a nigt to $ 200 a night.....
Posted by: Jason | August 14, 2008 3:14 AM
That's weird about empty seats at venues, and hotel rooms chopping prices! I can imagine a few possible reasons, but I bet it goes back to government control.
I don't think they have the idea of "free" market down very well.
Centralization of power sounds good but can sure wreak havoc, as Russia so slowly learned.

Jason,
Thanks for your comments.
Don't you think this lack of attendance is curious?I wonder what exactly is going on--I mean why haven't wealthy Europeans and Americans supported
the Olympics this year by traveling to China?
Could it be they are boycotting because of China's politics?
Posted by: prof marcia
| August 14, 2008 3:32 AM
Hmmmm.
I ma thinking dofferently...
The government bought their own tickets, trying to make it look like it was sold out.
Why?
The less people travel to China, the less interference they will have. The more people come to China (foreigners) the more they will lose control over their people etc.......I mean China doesn´t need the money, their industry can bring it up by themsleves. The only thing they need was the attention and that is exactly what they got......
It may be farfetched by my gut tells me this......
Posted by: Jason | August 14, 2008 3:43 AM
Jason,
Your take on this lack of Olympic attendance is very interesting. I never would have thought of your points.
But, why aren't the Chinese people showing up to these Olympic events?
Wouldn't they want to show a unified front to the world?

Marchia, do not forget that these people have to work 12 hours a day. They have no time. The people who attend are either wealthy, have received sponsored day cards from special sources are have taken holidays(reed as: they are wealthy and can afford it)
There was a story on BBC1 about a mother and a father of a youngtser in gymnastics who were not allowed to go to the gym events because their boss refused to give them one day off.
And exactly this is what China is a bit afraid of.....
Posted by: Jason | August 14, 2008 4:16 AM
I wonder what size bribe the Olympic Gangsters got from the Red Emperor for allowing this gaudy fiesta of empty seats, underage gymnasts, and commie propaganda to metasticize in the highly carciniogenic atmosphere of Beijing.
And, I marvel that the Ministry of Propaganda's Chief Eunuch can call the Tibetans and Uighurs "Chinese citizens," while simultaneously preventing Tibetans and Uighurs from coming anywhere near 'their' capital, Beijing.
It's long past time for the decent nations to pull the plug on the Olympics and the Red Emperor.
Let a thousand flowers wilt.
Good work, Craig. Please keep

Why isn't the Red Emperor Mao on the Chinese swim team ? He could swim 43 knots/hr when he was an obese and comatose vegetable in the 60s. Today he can probably only manage 10 knots, 'cuz he's even more fully dead. It'd still be fast enough to take the gold.

Ya, they probably have to work at the sweatshop 12 hours a day to enrich the commisar. The commisar can't go because he has to watch the wage slaves.
The only ones who have the time to go are those lazy Tibetan lamas and Turkoman mullahs. But, of course, Beijing is off limits to Tibetans and Turkomans for the duration. Huit clos.

I agree that China shouldn't have been given the games. Should China really have been rewarded with all of our manufacturing jobs, either? I actually have to give W a tiny pat on the back for statements about Sudan, religious freedom, etc.
The games may lead to more interaction with the West by more people, but that isn't going to change decades of social structure. More & more of the Chinese people are now "given" a new prosperity from their gov't. The change in the market may mean KFCs on every corner, but if the good people of China are still fearful of their gov't and feel beholden to it at the same time, I wouldn't expect any big moves toward democratization over there.
North Koreans don't have the prosperity of the Chinese, but both stay in lock step with their gov'ts (a sort of Stockholm syndrome, taking on the identity of their oppressors)...it's just that the gov't of China now pays it's people to maintain order.
There was a news story about the schools destroyed in the quake being bricked up and reporters sent away. One of the parents whose child died, presented a document from the Chinese gov't offering the equivalent of $9,000.00 for their loss...if they signed a contract not to protest & to maintain social order.
Report on NPR asking folks at the Olympics had heard about the American who was murdered. Some had not. Those who had, decided to wear clothes with their home flags or colors to make sure people didn't mistake them for one of us.
*I finally understand why the Hil'ry memos came out. Party kool-aid drinkers decided the best way to diffuse Hil'ry supporters BEFORE the convention was to show discord in her campaign & cause folks to question whether BO isn't just as capable to hold the office. (The answer is, no he is not. I've always voted Dem...except when I voted in a Rep primary so that I could vote against Dick Armey...but I won't vote for the worst possible candidate, so it looks like that will change this year.)
Posted by: blueINdallas | August 14, 2008 7:47 AM
gordo - Why don't you contact Fox News with all of those little tidbits about BO? Or, better yet, pop off an e-mail to the Nat'l Enquirer, the most reliable journalist outlet of note.
But gordo, based on BO's statement about people clinging to religion because they are bitter, I'd have to say that he's more likely an atheist than a sleeper cell of one. Joining that church in Chicago was just politically expedient. He's a snake for sure. There's your biblical reference for BO.

I don't know the format or rules on picking an Olympic site, Does the US have control over that? Having stated that, I don't see any advantage of keeping our athletes competing from our country. I can't imagine the hard work, dedication and sweat that goes into training. And our athletes are not compensated by our government!! How can we deny them? Going into another country for this world competition does not mean that we support their form of government. If this Olympics gives China a world stage, maybe it could have a good effect on their country. The world can see them for what they represent OR maybe the people of China can see their government a little better. Just a thought.

I had trouble finding food I liked there, but then I probably didn't know where to look.

Obama Lies to Ill. Supreme Ct. about Former Name?
"If the AP document showing that Barack Obama was once Barry Soetoro ... is legitimate, it would appear that Obama/Soetoro lied to the Illinois Supreme Court when he registered for the Bar.
As this form shows, Obama did not provide information about his former name, Barry Soetoro: (see at link)
On July 24, we reported on a lawsuit challenging Obama’s truthfulness on his Illinois Bar application for failure to disclose drug use and other criminal activity."

GORDO keeps flogging that poor old dead horse.
I wonder what those folks who sport shorter IQs are going to believe when they see the name Obama in black and whiteon the November ballot. Are they going to say to themselves, "I can't vote for him 'cuz GORDO says he's a furriner." Or, will they say, "Well, here's his name right here in print. GORDO musta been wrong."

Chloe -- One of the problems faced by indigenous Hawaiians is the bad diet, causing havoc with their health, raising blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, etc.
There is a movement to get back to eating native diets. In the indigenous communities where the native foods have been reintroduced, the health risks have gone down.
http://www.organicconsumers.org/organic/native092404.cfm
The principal native food of Hawaiians is kalo or taro.

I don't think China hosting the Olympics is a bad thing. It may not be a good thing either, but it does seem to fit in with the Olympics' mission:
"The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practised without discrimination or any kind, in a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play."
"All sports for all people. This is surely a phrase that people will consider foolishly utopian. That prospect troubles me not at all. I have pondered and studied it at length, and know that it is correct and possible", wrote Pierre de Coubertin in 1919. The future proved him right.

Obama's Foreign Donors: The media averts its eyes

Alicia, I howled at the mention of Zippy's, that being a nickname one of my previous secretaries had for me - to the point that she bought me a Zippy coffee mug - or did I buy it and that was why she called me that? I forget now. If you aren't familiar with Zippy, here he is:
http://www.zippythepinhead.com/
Craig, I know you wrote your column yesterday and are probably sleeping off last night's Olympics (viewing) marathon, but I'm of two minds on China - the first being a mirror of the view expressed in your comment, the second being that inclusion in the world economy will encourage China to move, ponderously perhaps, into the world community as we like to think it ought to be. I don't know, maybe one of my minds is right.

Morning everyone. Have the Russians reached Atlanta yet? I heard they invaded Georgia! Next stop, South Carolina. Be ready, Sturge! But seriously, the Dems got some good hews this morning. A judge ruled that Detroit Mayor Kwamr Kilpatrick can attend the Dem's convention in Denver. Kilpatrick is a SD. Kilpatrick has also asked Michigan Governore Granholm for a pardon or at least immunity if he testifies at his hearing. Unbelievable! As far as the Olympics go, try watching women's beach volleyball with my Mom! All she does is complain about the "skimpy" outfits that they women wear. Her quote was, "You can almost see her butthole!" Then she complained about why the men wear shorts and shirts when they play!

Obama and Clinton have come to an agreement that Sen. Clinton's name will be put into nomination. No details yet which means I have a fanciful question:
What will her name be put in nomination as?
It's been a long time since we have had a nomination and vote on Vice President (1980) Might be a nice unique twist on what already promises to be a unique convention.

to Julie Young and others asking about Helen, she's coming home today. here's the statement:
"Washington, DC -- Dean of the White House Press Corps and Hearst Columnist, Helen Thomas, is being released from Sibley Hospital’s Renaissance Center for Rehabilitation today. Thomas will continue to recuperate at home before returning to work and resuming her column.
Thomas suffered from a colon infection which sidelined her for several months. She is expected to make a full recovery, and said, “I look forward to returning to the fray sooner, rather than later.”
During her recuperation, Helen Thomas will be working on her next book. She is the author of five other books, including her new children’s work (co-authored with syndicated editorial cartoonist, Chip Bok), THE GREAT WHITE HOUSE BREAKOUT.
Thomas is also the subject of an upcoming HBO documentary by Rory Kennedy, THANK YOU, MR. PRESIDENT. The film airs on HBO on Monday, August 18th at 9:00 pm."

Just for the serious record. The 1980 Convention was the last time there was an actual roll call for the renomination of Walter Mondale. Since then, it has been by acclimation of the Presidential candidate's choice, but there is still a vote.
on the 1980 vote: Mondale was re-nominated with 2,428.7 votes to 723.3 not voting and 179 scattering among other choices.
Things got interesting in 1984 in a situation similar to this year with Jesse Jackson's people demanding that he receive the Vice Presidency as his reward for coming in second, the Dukakis campaign decided to nominate Senator Bentsen by voice vote, rather than roll call vote.

Thom Hartman is working the theme that the little Georgian push that got the unexpected strong Russian push back was the bright idea of Rove and/or Campaign to bring back a short cold war so that McCain would have an election issue since Iraq and the economy weren't working out so well.
Seems Rove was over in that part of the world chit chatting and then once it started McCain's "We are all Georgians" speech was meant to echo the reagan "Tear Down This Wall" meme
Interesting idea.

This is probably someone who will most likely vote in November thinking that Obama is a Muslim, voting for McSame believing in his go-gett’im attitude to strike at Russia (or any other place in the world where he wants to look tuff) and that our armies are unlimited resources. "Julia - was this person you talked with having hissy screaming fits of fear, and ready to go fight off the evil monster Russia?"
No, Bethyboo, not even that. It was more of a sort of apathetic "Wha...?", along the lines of "Is this going to affect local traffic or something...?" That kind of thing. It is kinda funny (and hard to believe) now that I think about it (and have sobered up to a degree), but what originally upset me wasn't really the lack of knowlege about the situation, but the lack of concern:
"Georgia...? Is that, like, GEORGIA? That's here in America, right...?"
"No, Georgia as in the independent state of Georgia that was once a part of the Soviet Union, that's next to Turkey in the Middle East (please tell me you've at least HEARD of the Middle East)..."
"Oh. Okay. I guess there'd be a lot more news about it if the Communists were invading the REAL Georgia."

Nov 8/9, 15/16, 22/23, and 29/30 Thanksgiving enters in there plus prep for Christmas/Chanukah/Kwaanza/Festivus (take your pick)

If your have never been, Asilomar sits in a California State park with direct unobstructed access to the beach on Monterey Bay

Easiest mode of transportation - Fly to San Jose and rent car for drive over mountains or San Francisco and rent car for drive down the coast.

(a) The something is discovered, revealed or verified that severely damages the presumptive nominee
and/or
(b) Credible Polling at Convention time that casts serious doubts on the Obama-touted win scenario that doesn't need Ohio, Florida, Michigan or Pennsylvania.
In (a) Hillary wins the roll call for the Presidency. In (b), the Party enters Hillary's name for roll call vote for VP.

That's the glasses stuff I currently have, but I'm tired of losing/breaking cheapo reading glasses and the coating on my driving glasses is scratched, hazy, etc., so I'm facing reality and getting glasses I don't have to swap one for the other (except for sunglasses, to which I am deeply addicted). "Open Secrets: US troops stationed abroad gave 6 times more money to Obama than McCain; also more funds to Ron Paul than McCain.
Marine Corps only service (troops abroad) giving more to McCain. By a $4,000 margin."
Dog, aren't just the reportable contributions included here? Can hardly draw conclusions about total support by specific classifications if all the people contributing less than a couple hundred bucks are excluded.
Wise military people make their contributions multiple times with each contribution being below the reportable threshold. Although the campaigns are supposed to report the total of all contributions when determining if a contributor meets the $200 threshold, my experience has been that they seldom do so.

McCain's first paragraph:
For anyone who thought that stark international aggression was a thing of the past, the last week must have come as a startling wake-up call. After clashes in the Georgian region of South Ossetia, Russia invaded its neighbor, launching attacks that threaten its very existence. Some Americans may wonder why events in this part of the world are any concern of ours. After all, Georgia is a small, remote and obscure place. But history is often made in remote, obscure places.
McCain's first paragraph, edited to correct jingoistic historical blindness:
For anyone who thought that stark international aggression was a thing of the past, the last five years must have come as a startling wake-up call. After a Saudi Arabian headed terrorist organization based in Afghanistan carried out an attack on New York City, the US invaded Afghanistan, then left a few troops behind and went to Iraq (which had no connection whatsoever to the attacks on New York) launching attacks that deposed its leaders and threatened its very existence. Some Americans may wonder why events in this part of the world are any concern of ours. After all, Iraq is a relatively small, remote and obscure place, unconnected to the attacks against the US. But history is often made in remote, obscure places by petty tyrants who can't figure out anything else constructive to do for our country.
And the rest of the article is equally ironic and delusional - it's certainly worth a read.

Of course John Edwards' name should be placed in nomination to honor the achievement of yet one more philandering white guy failing for a second time to win enough primaries - exactly none - or delegates - exactly 6 - to make a credible presidential run.

I believe Edwards has officially dropped out of the race and released his delegates. All 6 of them.
But I don't see a problem with his name being placed on the ballot.

"A second report confirms the registration number 203 seen in the photo. On April 29, 2008, Christiane Oelrich’s report appeared on News 24.com, which included an interview with Obama’s Indonesian teacher, Israella Darmawan:
Darmawan, 64, who retired last year, now only returns to her former school to tell current pupils about their famous alumnus. She takes a faded book from a shelf, the school register dating back to 1968…Under registration number 203 it reads in large-lettered handwriting: “Barry Soetoro.”
A third report from the Jakarta Post confirms that Obama’s teacher liked to show this registration document to reporters.
Obama has made every concerted effort to cover up his background from the American people. He says he was never a Muslim and was never raised as a Muslim. He makes the claim on his website that: “Senator Obama has never been a Muslim, was not raised as a Muslim, and is a committed Christian.” Lie.
The American public has a right to know that the potential president has lied about his background repeatedly during the primaries ..."

Actually he had 61 SDs and Pledged. They were released when he dropped out. The majority moved to Obama over the next several months, but they are free to vote any way that they want on the roll call.

Ya know
I've never understood the Edwards campaign getting the attention it did. Edwards is the only person in the race this year that is less qualified than Obama to be president. Also he was terrible as the VP candidate. The only thing he had going for him is the fact that if Elizabeth is supporting him there must be something there.
Oh well

Ummm, Gordo. Not to pick nits or anything, but doesn't line 3 refer to his birthplace? (I admit I can't read the language it's in, but that seems to be what it refers to). And doesn't it list that as Honolulu? And isn't that where he claims to be born? And wasn't that the whole purpose of the fourteen gazillion links you've posted here - to "prove" he isn't a US citizen because the COLB that was posted was supposedly Photo Shopped?? And doesn't this kind of support his contention that he was born in Hawaii? Or did his mom start this whole conspiracy to say he's an American Citizen born on American soil so he can run for president when he grows up back when he was a child? Man, give it up.

Jamie, not to pick nits, but no one has superdelegates until they cast their votes - probably why CNN lists Edwards as having 6 pledged delgates only. Unless I'm reading the article you linked wrong, even DCW noted that - and they had him at 19 (updated to 4.5 on 6/6/08), including SDs, not 61.

CNN kept saying Edwards had 21 delegates when all the back and forth over exactly how many Clinton and Obama had and where would they go in the final tally.
Of course it finally came down to the fact that neither Obama or Clinton had enough delegates to win without the Super Delegates and they were the ones who decided the final tally not the voting public.
And in the end, since they will now have a roll call, all of the delegates can do anything they want. to do plus all of the above could change on 30 seconds notice to AP just to keep us all confused.

Pogo,
I don't want to talk about how we got into Iraq, or the mess that's been made of it for the past few years, or why we didn't focus on Afghanistan.
I do want to talk about how we will keep faith with the former Soviet republics that we seduced into our camp. Republics such as Georgia. And we need to talk about former member states of the Soviet Union. Countries such as Poland and the Czech Republic.
These countries are at tremendous risk because of our having 'won' the Cold War, taking them under our wing, then proceeding to disarm and remove the conventional forces from Central Europe that protected them.
We need to talk about whether we are willing to abandon these countries and their populations to a resurgent Soviet-like Russia.
We need to reflect on whether spending four-percent of our GDP on defense, including the wars we are now in, is adequate. Looking in the historical context, for the last half of the last century, we spent more than twice that percentage and still thrived economically.
We should reevaluate whether our defense leadership is correct when they, in order to achieve the four percent level, say that we no longer need tanks and artillery and airplanes to maintain the peace. That all we need are perhaps 200 really fancy airplanes carrying some really great conventional munitions when they are opposite a Russia controlling forces several times the size of ours and much more heavily armed.
We need to decide if we can abandon Europe and the Middle East. Whether our historical ties to Western Europe are worth contesting the Russians over, or if we need a physical presence in the Middle East to guarantee the flow of oil in our direction.
All those questions without mentioning China, Korea and Japan. Much less the Philippines and Australia and New Zealand.
All these questions must be addressed. And they must be addressed no matter what we do in Iraq and Afghanistan.
And pointing fingers on how we got into Iraq just detracts from the discussion.

Real Clear Delegate count by SD and State pledged if nothing changes on the roll call.which of course it will.
http://www.demconwatchblog.com/2008/05/what-happens-to-edwards-delegates.html
Probable developments for those who have never seen a recall. On Wednesday night, If there are formal nomination speeches then Clinton will be nominated (lots of noise, sign waving, and yahooing). Obama will be nominated (more yahooing, sign waving and general merriment).
They will start with Alabama and proceed alphabetically through the states until they get to Illinois who will pass. They will then continue alphabetically until they get close to the point of Obama winning the nomination at which point the next state in line will yield to the state of Illinois. Illinois will then cast its votes giving Obama the nomination (lots of yahooing going on). Once the demonstration is over, the roll call of the states will continue and then the final tally will be announced.
A good time was had by all. Everybody happy.
Go listen to Obama acceptance speech on Thursday night, lots of whoop it up. Adjourn and go elect a President.

You would have to get into the nitty gritty of citizenship law about any changes, but if someone is an American citizen, they are an American citizen unless they renounce that citizenship. It doesn't matter where in the world they live for whatever reason.
Now many countries allow minors to be naturalized as citizens under a parents application. The parent can swear allegiance to the new country on behalf of the family, but this is not binding on the child once they reach their majority. In any case, the child would remain a US citizen until they chose to either retain the new citizenship as an adult.
If Soetero were a Phillippine citizen, there would be no need for him to apply for citizenship, so young Barrack would not be a Philippine citizen. He probably traveled on his mother's passport who was a US citizen. She specifically made the effort to return to Hawaii for the birth of her daughter who is a US citizen for that reason.
IOW. Give it up. All children born to Ann Dunham are and continue to be "natural born citizens" of the United States.
On the religious front. Just being in a school where a religion is featured particularly before the age of 10 doesn't make you a practitioner of that religion. Everyone who goes to a parochial school is not Catholic.

Alicia. YES. It would be an improvement anyway, and I've been thinking about do it for a while. Everything I buy made in China lately seems to fall apart or be defective when I get it home. (And don't forget how that additive they added to our pet food here killed a lot of people's pets). What happened to quality control.
The only problem is, on electronics for instance, even if they're not made in China, the parts they use to asemble them are. But a boycott will be easy.

GORDO,
Have you considered the possiblity that Obama's step-dad lied, rather than Obama ?
Obama the toddler did not fill out that document, didn't swear it was the truth, and is not responsible for any portion of it. Old step-dad planned the boy's religious life, but was thwarted in his designs. American's don't have children choose their religions, like you guys do.
Regarding lies, they are not a bar to becoming president. IF Obama lied, so what? Clinton lied about the Sarjevo snipers, mccain lies about Iran & al qaeda, oil drilling, torture, his record, his heroism. In fact, he spreads a new lie every few minutes. bob barr lied that Bill Clinton's perjury made him unfit to be president, and ralph nadir lied that there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between Gore and babybush. IF they all lied, so what?

I won't have to worry about such things anymore -- I've had everything replaced with implants, a dozen of them. Had the permanent bottom teeth installed yesterday. The entire mess is screwed to the implants and are not removable except in the doc's office. Much more friendly than regular dentures.
Next month I start on the prosthesis for the uppers--it will be installed permanently as well.
It's been a long process--more than two years and included a bunch of extractions and bone grafts. Not as painful as it sounds because experts were doing it.
Hopefully, dental problems will be a thing of the past.

resignation - A formal document giving notice of your intention to resign.

Is there news about Obama/Soetoro dropping out of the race and leaving the Senate?
Is this why?
"Obama Lies to Ill. Supreme Ct. about Former Name?
If the AP document showing that Barack Obama was once Barry Soetoro (see our Breaking Story, Photo Documents Barry Soetoro, Indonesian Citizen, Muslim Religion)…is legitimate, it would appear that Obama/Soetoro lied to the Illinois Supreme Court when he registered for the Bar.
As this form shows, Obama did not provide information about his former name, Barry Soetoro: (see link)"

Oops!. Oh well back to the drawing board.
Damn G Man Obama was admitted to the bar in 1899. What's up with that?

All these records are 20+ years old. Who's to say what's accurate.

I forgot to inquire about you buddy Larry Sinclair. How's he doing? Has he taken any limo rides lately? LOL

Flatus - how cool that you are going to have super good choppers. Were the implants tedious to have done and were they done one by one? I think I want one instead of a bridge.
This endodontist said he tried general dentistry for a while but went back to specializing. He finds doing root canals kinda meditative. HA! I'd die before I looked into a bunch of horrible mouths.
