Who Raised Kaine?

| | Comments (206)

As Veep games go, the Tim Kaine boomlet likely results from one of two places: Either the Virginia governor's enemies leaked his private talk of being a serious candidate or Barack Obama's camp did it as a trial balloon.

We are now entering the final phase of running mate selection in both parties. And typically campaigns look for side-door ways to measure how a particular choice will be received by the news media, their supporters and those in their party who marginally back the presumed presidential nominee. Appeal to independent voters is also under scrutiny as names are leaked.

On the darker side, sometimes a serious running-mate potential is outed by those who do not want them to be picked.

The way in which Kaine's name was floated justifies suspicion that the dark side was afoot. Anonymously quoting him as having confirmed his short-list status is the clue - not the way to make him look good in light of the former Richmond mayor's public disclaimers.

If the dark side is at work, look to close rivals -- and their most powerful advocates -- for a culprit.

Don't believe the crush against Romney because of his faith.
I think he could turn Michigan for McCain , and I believe McCain will tap his shoulder soon to join the ticket.
I cannot believe Evan Bayh, the favorite for veep on a possible HRC ticket, is being bandied about as Obama's #2 these days.
I would love it, but we all know it ain't a-gonna happen.
Funny thing is, Bayh is the only one on the planet who could turn Indiana blue. He's the most popular Hoosier by far.

  10. Champ - don't know if you saw my post the other night, but here is the same basic content.

Do you hate St Louis because of sports teams? If not I can't imagine - it could only be a wild guess.

    Posted by: boop | July 30, 2008 1:11 AM

  11. STL is just awful in my opinion. Dirty, dangerous, ugly, materialistic, insecure, stupid hippies (not that all hippies are stupid), vapid yuppie/preppie types, fraternity/sorority culture, stupid Cardinals worship, the pizza blows, can't walk more than 5 feet without someone trying to bum a cigarette off you...I could go on all day, seriously. I just hate STL. Can't say for certain that it's the worst place in the world, but it's right up there. I know there are some good people there, I'm friends with some, but if I never see that damn town again, it will be too soon.

    Sorry; you asked...

    Posted by: champ | July 30, 2008 1:27 AM

  12. And it's not that I don't like all cities, btw. San Fran, NYC, Boston, San Diego, San Antonio, maybe some others of which I can't think right now are some that I like. KC is OK. The people are nice, and the BBQ is great, but it is kind of boring.

Philly and Baltimore are good examples of cities with just enough redeeming factors to mitigate the plentitude of drawbacks they have. IMO, of course.

    Not that you asked...

    Posted by: champ | July 30, 2008 1:36 AM

  13. Champ - not at all sorry I asked. I was just curious. I do wonder where you went when you were there and how long you were there.

You mentioned Mizzou once, and if so, I thought maybe you had spent a lot of time in St Louis.

I actually had to laugh because your complaints about St Louis are exactly the kinds of things I've always heard about any city. I love NYC, Boston, and San Francisco, too, but haven't spent much time in San Antonio.

I grew up in St Louis county, which does not include the city of St Louis, which is not in any county. That right there makes the city a little short of cash and there is plenty of poverty there. The art museum and the zoo are world-class as is Shaw's Gardens - the museum and the zoo don't charge entrance fees which is highly unusual. There is also a classical music radio station there, and that is also not a given in most big cities.
It is a difficult city to get to know, tho, and I've heard others say that when they firgured it out, they were fine.

The upshot is, I guess you know the place where you grow up better than any place else.

However, I have no ego involved in St Louis so don't care if you hate it - I was just curious cuz you were kinda vehement about it. You've given me some info re St Louis which I find amusing since it's so different from what I had expected.

You sound to me as if you've had a brush with most of the country, so all you have left to do is get in your truck and go. Have a wonderful time and a safe trip.

  24. J Capehart had it all wrong. BO is just arrogant, arrogant, arrogant. It's the "content of his character."

Between the prez seal, O-force One, his prez'l tour & uber-rally and his claim to be a symbol for all that is good & true, I think he out-does W on the hubris-o-meter. (Pete Hamill had it wrong, too. Reagan wasn't referring to himself as a "shining city on a hill." Whereas, all good things BO spews are self-referential.)

As for veep, does BO need one since he is all things to all people?

If the pesky rules call for one, Kaine seems as good as anyone else...except Hil'ry....'cause she would upstage him & wouldn't seem quite so sparkley.

No, I think he wants to stand next to someone who is politically short, fat & homely so he can magnify his magnificent magnificancy even more magnificantly.

  25. Well, I am one of those who believe that Senator Clinton's status as Senator Obama's VP has been a fait accompli since shortly after he got the nomination. Regardless of what the polls are saying, and how well he is doing now with those groups who voted for her in the primary, I wonder if he can win without her.

    Posted by: Clemmieo | July 30, 2008 7:40 AM

  26. I think he's too arrogant to want her on the ticket. His ego is like a balloon; the more it inflates, the more fragile it becomes. I don't think the DNC could be bothered to pull their heads out to go that route, either. Also, I'm not sure she should sully herself by getting on a losing ticket; she can run clean in '12.

Maybe acting as prez so quickly is genetic.

  37. China air pollution.

When Stinky and I went to Korea in May, I was absolutely shocked by the pernicious air pollution that choked the peninsula.

It was worse than 40-years earlier when coal was the universal heating and cooking fuel, and ancient steam locomotives belched their way between every Korean city.

In May, I suspected that much of the pollution was courtesy of China. Viewing all the coverage of that country revolving around the Olympics, I have little doubt that they are indeed the culprit.

I'd agree that Bali probably didn't have the kind of government police/military control that we are accustomed to in the west, what with all the buddhists there, but London and Madrid don't rally seem to make your case about AQ striking places with weak government control. And the plots that were disrupted -again, I don't trust that those plots ever existed, or if they did that they were at a stage of planning to consider them credible threats. The authorities in (Britain was it?) admitted as much about the much ballyhooed airliner plot, which has in the past month been discredited as having been something the would-be perps would have liked to do, but couldn't figure out a way to make the liquid explosives they thought would be a good idea work - which of course didn't stop our crack TSA from banning soft drinks, lotion, mouthwash and toothpaste in containers big enough to make them worth taking on vacation from airplanes. Sorry, Fry, I don't buy most of it as much more than Republican fear mongering to try and stay in power based on "secret information that we can't reveal without tipping off the terrorists" that doesn't exist. And I don't see any terrorists under my bed when I vacuum, which is the only time I check for them. (And no one ever blew up a plane with a shoe bomb, either, but we still have to take our shoes off for x-rays, and I've been felt up by more TSA guys than Carter's has pills - fitting the terrorist profile I'm sure - bald middle aged white man business traveler or vacationer traveling with his wife and kid.

Sorry for the sarcasm - well, actually I'm not - but it's not really directed at you, just at the line of crap you've bought into.

It appears that despite the contiinued drop in home prices and consumer confidence reports yesterday, the falling price of oil, the mortgage bailout legislation and the fed continuing it's emergency loan program to Wall Street have given investors enough confidence to make the Dow rise for a second dday in a row.

  84. jack, I'm sure McClatchy's report is accurate - but when it notes the caveat that much of the violence in Iraq goes unreported, the assumptions you have to make to accept the daily report as indicative of the overall level of violence and death there are too much for me to accept it as anythng more than it is. As I see it there is no reliable source readily available that reflects the overall level of violence and death in Iraq. And I'd love to see one.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/30/us/30homeless.html

Chronically homeless numbers fell between 2005 & 2007 - sounds good, doesn't it? Yeah, until you realize that represents 18% of the homeless, whose numbers rose during that same period. Note that in NY, which is held up as the example of how well the program is working, chronically homeless represent just over 10% of the total homeless, not the 18% cited as the national figure. Great report - press release should read "The Bush economy has created more homeless people, but a fifth of them don't stay homeless for as long." Sheesh.

  93. jack, that may be an apples to apples comparison, but it not meaningful as anything other than a comparison of reports of violence (as opposed to reports of violence and killings) unless you know that the proportion of reported violence and killings as a percentage of the total is comparable from one period to the next, and that is not reflected in the report or anywhere else if you don't know what percentage of violence and killings are reported. It could be indicative of a reduction in violence, but without that info, you can't make that statement. It could also reflect a reduction in reporting.

  96. Pogo,

I remember reading about Ramzi Yousef, who did the 1st bomb at WTC. He was a master of explosives. He now resides in Super Max out in Colorado. Here is one of his many terrorist acts:

    Philippine Airlines Flight 434
On December 11, 1994, Yousef boarded a Philippine Airlines Flight 434 in Manila headed to Cebu; he pretended to be an Italian man named Armaldo Forlani. Midway through the flight he disappeared into the toilet, took off his shoes to get the batteries and assembled his bomb which he tucked into the life vest under his seat, seat number 26K. The plane flew on to Cebu where Yousef got off before the final leg of the flight to Tokyo, Japan. Haruki Ikegami, a 24-year-old businessman, took Yousef's old seat. Two hours later, the device exploded, killing Ikegami. The blast blew a hole in the floor and severed the cables that controlled the plane's right aileron. The jet's steering was crippled but the captain made an emergency landing at Naha Airport on Okinawa (southern Japan), saving 272 passengers and 20 crew. Yousef monitored the effects of his "test", then increased the amount of explosive in his devices and began preparing at least a dozen bombs.

But just before the Bojinka Plot was due to be launched, a fire started in Yousef's Manila flat and police, led by Aida Fariscal, uncovered his plot. A Philippine National Police raid in a Manila apartment also turned up evidence that Abdul Murad, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Yousef had drawn up plans for flying an airplane into CIA headquarters. The information was passed on to the FAA, who warned individual airlines.

  97. The Paper Trail: Obama’s Indonesian Background [Updated]

"... it would appear that in the State of Hawaii you can have more than one Birth Certificate, if you happen to have been Adopted.

... there exists a possibility that the Birth Certificate on File in Hawaii contains information other than that which appears on the Document that we have all seen. If it does and if it lists Father’s Name as Lolo Soetoro and the Senator’s Surname as Soetoro he has some explaining to do. It would tend to suggest that he possesses, or possessed, a copy of his Original Certificate of Live Birth and that he has been using that in place of his amended Certificate of Live Birth.

IF I am correct in my assumption that Senator Obama was adopted by Lolo Soetoro, and I don’t see an alternative that fits, he would have been an Indonesian Citizen until he was 21 years old, unless he made a formal Renunciation. But Indonesia is not Kenya and you do not AUTOMATICALLY lose citizenship, at any point. "

  102. Sadly, when it comes to the war in Iraq, it is the Arizona Republican who failed his own commander-in-chief exam. At almost every turn in the run-up to the invasion and the ensuing American occupation, McCain’s judgment was almost always wrong, often disastrously so. From his predictions of a short war, claims U.S. troops would be greeted as liberators and that the U.S. would find weapons of mass destruction to his announcements of mission accomplished, his ongoing confusion over friend and foe in Iraq and so much more, John McCain the would-be wartime president gets failing marks.

  104. Renee, that was quick.

I normally find the CSM to have very good reporting - but the article you linked doesn't demonstrate better security - it assumes it, and in passing, I might add. It demonstrates increased oil revenues, which may or may not be a result of a better security situation, at least in the oil fields, but doesn't show any improvement in employment in their chosen fields of study for the graduates it talks about, which I would think improved security and resulting economic resurgence would result in. There are indicators that should be capable of documenting, most of which woudl be economic measures - I just haven't seen the evidence to support the improvements that our government is claiming there. It may exist, and I'll be happy to see that it does, but I ain't seen it yet.

  109. Hello everyone,
As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass along
that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his
visit to 'The War Zone'. I wanted to share with you what happened.
He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area
to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram.
As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and
didn't say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he
finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent
that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights) so he
could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the
opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service.

So really he was just here to make a showing for the American's back home
that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are going to
make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are
providing the freedom that they are providing for you.

I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas
Cowboy Cheer leaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the
President of the United States. I just don't understand how anyone would
want him to be our Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around
those that provide the freedom for him and our great country.

If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know
what kind of caliber of person he really is. What you see in the news is
    all fake.

  116. Bowman, that's the closest thing to an operable shoe bomb I've seen (aside from Richard whateverhisnamewas who couldn't get his shoes to light and blow up) but no cigar. It was the batteries in his shoes, not the bomb. I know there are bad people out there, and when they want to cause havoc, they can. But consider that I carry batteries in my laptop, my camera, my blackberry, my cell phone (and my wife's and my kid's), and my kid's dvd player (to say nothing of his travel amp and headphone amps). I'd wager there are more millivolts in those devices than Yousef had in his shoes. I stand on what I said about The TSA's reaction to things that either didn't exist or didn't work. The two things I've seen that look like they might actually provide some measure of security in the airports I go through are the explosives sniffing gateway they have in some of the airports, and the x-ray and metal detectors could actually locate and prevent someone from getting a gun or knife aboard a plane - although I took a corkscrew with a foil cutter (albeit it would be hard to hijack a plane with a corkscrew and a dull 1" knife) on board in my laptop backpack twice last month without setting off any alarms or concern. If you travel much, you come to realizw how easy it would be under existing rules to do what the existing rules supposedly exist to prevent. (btw, if you appreciate irony, and I know you do, click on the John P. O'Neill link in the article and read it).

WASHINGTON — The number of times Senator John McCain’s new advertisement attacking Senator Barack Obama for canceling a visit with wounded troops in Germany last week has been shown fully or partly on local, national and cable newscasts: well into the hundreds.

The number of times that spot actually, truly ran as a paid commercial: roughly a dozen.

  184. About Tim Kaine? I understand that he opposes a woman's right to choose. WOW if that is true then I will not be able to support the Democratic ticket. Sen. Obama would again be undercutting the rights of women and negating all of the support for Roe v. Wade which we have defended for decades. It certainly would be a change in politics but one I could not and will not support. God forbid that Tim Kaine would become President but we cannot afford to take that chance.

I do think that the candidate can choose anyone he wants but we also have to choose whether or not to support a ticket at such odds with democratic core beliefs. Support of women, economically and personally has been a mandate of the democratic party. If you do not support women's rights then it does not mean you cannot win an election but it does mean i will not vote for you.

Obama has already hedged on his support of Roe v. Wade and is now floating a veep candidate who opposes the right of choice. NARAL where is your voice, your outrage and withdrawal of support.

They were told that they must have a "proper and respectful" attitude while they were in the shrines. However, he said the floors were so polished that they realized how easily they could slide across the floors. With a good running start, they could easily slide 9ft across the floors! LOL! These tours basically consisted of going room to room and looking at the gifts presented to the Kims by other countries? The gift to the Kims from the USA was a basketball signed by Michael Jordan. They had no idea who he was, but assumed he was someone very important! One of the more interesting stories was his visit to the "DMZ".

Similarly, I think he's unlikely to pick Tim Kaine, whose lieutenant governor is an arch-conservative Republican. It's taken the Democratic party 40 years to get to the point where it's a majority party in Virginia -- I just can't see willingly handing over the governor's mansion to a Republican, even if it is for only one year. And for what? Kaine's not necessarily that helpful in Virginia, as Silver pointed out yesterday. I mean, Tim Kaine's a great guy and everything, but does any marginal improvement that he adds to Obama's campaign offset the damage of coronating a Republican governor in Richmond? I doubt it.

  194. OK, here's a BBC link to death tolls in Iraq.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/629/629/7036068.stm

It suffers from some of the same problems the link jack posted suffers from - a lack of accurate reporting. My take on it is this - Civilian deaths over the past 4 or so months appear to be about what they were before the excalation in violence of 2006 occurred, and US military deaths this year are somewhat less than they were before that same escalation in violence. Citing the US troop deaths is not much of a metric on security because that death rate is dependent on the number of troops in the field and the level of combat activity they are engaging in - the last two years were horrendous, far surpassing the previous 3. The Iraqi civilian death rate appears to have returned to a level about consistent with the level it was during the third year of the war, which exceeded the prior two and was less than the following two. If you ignore the first 2 years of the war and that reflects increased security in your mind, fine with me. Assuming there is some validity to the figures, any reduction is only in comparison to the last 2 years. That doesn't sound like much of an increase in security to me.

I frankly don't know what the economics of that situation were, but I think we can reasonably assume it was competitive with offerings of Pizza made in the USA. I have to agree with you about questionning how in the world frozen pizza can be made in Italy and shipped here as economically as pizza made here, particularly considering container shipping costs these days, but the Japanese were able to do that with steel in the 70s and 80s - shipping scrap steel to Japan, making finished steel products out of it and shipping them back here and selling them more cheaply in the US than we could produce and sell those products here. I think labor costs were the primary difference with the steel industry, and have to be a big factor in the pizza industry as wel, although I never would have thought that would be the case.

  201. ET? Are you a democrat? Does it matter.? This blog is very heavly weighted towards liberal idiology, I'm suprised that Frydaddy comes around as much as he does. Personally, I'm gald he does.

If this just becomes an echo chamber for one political party what good is it? Not much. And that is why I encourage GORDO to keep those posts coming. The responses are so predictable.

    again my response...

"You don't have to answer... Post all you want, but since you rarely say anything yourself, it gets hard to understand who you are in terms of these posts...."

Does this clarify what I was saying? It's a two parter... One: he doesn't have to answer, in other words there is not a "rule", so nothing missed there. Two: because there is no text by the poster him/herself as there are in most posts, it is hard to know where the person and the links coalesce together.

Hope this clears the issue up for you.

  202. Sturg, thanks for linking that James Fallows piece.

I don't know where he gets the energy to do all the intellectual exploring that he does. I envy his range of interests.

  203. Chloe, this is still The United States and you have a right to believe what you believe and to comment on it. I wouldn't pay any attention to the vitriol that the unmentionable ones spew nor the condescension from Jamie.
So many here have such a high opinion of themselves that it's nice to read the reasonable, logical yet humble comments that you make Posted by: Boss Tweed | July 30, 2008 1:06 PM

Tweed, I thought maybe I was the only one that noticed. What Jamie said actually made me feel worse than what Dog said.

    Thanks for the kind words.

ps. am hoping that might be Nick.

  204. That's not fair. I think we all realize that Chloe is not particularly sophisticated when it comes to finding info on the computer...virtually everyone who knows their way around the net discredited the posting immediately.

Gee, Jamie, I'm surprised I can even use a computer. Aren't you?
