Shallow Thoughts from Vacation

| | Comments (357)

In a week of disciplined news avoidance on vacation, there were accidental moments of unfortunate exposure to current events:

mccain_bushsr.jpg-- Was that recent footage of John McCain with George Bush the Elder in Maine? Unless they're planning a remake of "The Sunshine Boys," can't imagine what sense that makes.obama_jordan.jpg

-- Apparently, every day was Casual Friday for Barack Obama in the Middle East. Hey, if the Age of Obama is about nuking the necktie, I'm on board.

-- Randomly catching television video (usually without sound) I must say that McCain ought to stop awkwardly laughing at his own jokes. His weird facial contortions make it difficult to tell whether he is laughing or crying.

-- Turn off the sound for Obama press conferences. Turning up the volume tarnishes the "brand," because he sounds like the stultifying drone of an airplane engine.

-- On my ever-loving intersection of politics and culture, don't miss Meryl Streep in the brand new film version of "Mama Mia." Her superbly poignant rendition of ABBA's "The Winner Takes It All" got me thinking about what Hillary might sing to Barack.

  3. The winner takes it all: ABBA (one of their best songs)

    I don’t wanna talk
About the things we’ve gone through
    Though it’s hurting me
    Now it’s history
    I’ve played all my cards
And that’s what you’ve done too
    Nothing more to say
    No more ace to play

    The winner takes it all
    The loser standing small
    Beside the victory
    That’s her destiny

    I was in your arms
    Thinking I belonged there
    I figured it made sense
    Building me a fence
    Building me a home
    Thinking I’d be strong there
    But I was a fool
    Playing by the rules

The gods may throw a dice
Their minds as cold as ice
    And someone way down here
    Loses someone dear
    The winner takes it all
    The loser has to fall
    It’s simple and it’s plain
    Why should I complain.

But tell me does she kiss
Like I used to kiss you?
    Does it feel the same
    When she calls your name?
    Somewhere deep inside
You must know I miss you
    But what can I say
    Rules must be obeyed

    The judges will decide
    The likes of me abide
    Spectators of the show
    Always staying low
    The game is on again
    A lover or a friend
A big thing or a small
    The winner takes it all

    I don’t wanna talk
If it makes you feel sad
    And I understand
You’ve come to shake my hand
    I apologize
If it makes you feel bad
    Seeing me so tense
    No self-confidence
    But you see
    The winner takes it all
    The winner takes it all......

  28. Benny in the Desert
In the great desert lived a band of nomads. Their leader, Benny, had risen to his rank due to his magnificent beard. His people believed a man's strength and courage came from his beard, and thus the man with the biggest beard was their chief.

After leading the band for many years, Benny began to fell uncomfortable wearing the beard, in this hot and dusty land. He wanted to shave it off, so he called his council together to get their advice.

When he said he wanted to shave, the councilmen were shocked. One said, "Do you not remember the ancient legend, Sire. The leader who removes his beard is cursed and made into a piece of earthenware."

Benny had heard this legend, but being a modern man, he scoffed at the tale.

Being headstrong, he went ahead and cut and scraped away his once magnificent beard. As the final whisker was cut off, a huge dust storm came up. It lasted only a few seconds, and when it cleared, there was a man-sized clay vessel where only moments before had stood their leader.

Moral: "A Benny shaved is a Benny urned."

  34. Since we're talking quotes, I'll add this partial one, when Willy Loman said all you need to succeed in America is "a smile and a shoeshine." I first read Death of a Salesman as a high school junior, and in spite of AND because of his very human failings, my heart broke for Willy. I was the child of farmers, whose only enemy as the weather. It opened my eyes to another world.

The reason I'm thinking of it is that lately I've seen several "progressives" referring to some of the electorate as "The Willy Loman Demographic." These are those, so they say, who will not vote for Obama.

There's a long literary conversation that could be had here, especially about the fact that Willy Loman is one of the great tragic figures in American letters.

    It seems a great oversimplification.

  40. Patsi,

I'd love to have a long literary conversation about Willy Loman. I read a lot
of plays and Arthur Miller is one of my favorite playwrights.

I'm just wondering, Isn't it a way some progressives marginalize "some of the electorate" by calling them the "Willy Loman Demographic," sort of like the way all "those working class" voters were during the primary? I felt sorry for Willy Loman, too. He was a tragic hero.

  51. Embarrassed to say I had to look up Willy Loman. Saw the movie, read the book, but all so long ago.

'Salesman' Willy Loman: A Towering Little Man

Willy Loman seems an odd little character to call out such searing emotions. He isn't struggling to survive war, bigotry, or poverty — just the ordinariness of middle-class life. He doesn't want to defeat evil or save the world, just pay off his house and provide for his family. He wants his sons to love him, and he wants to deserve the love of his wife, whom he feels he has failed.

Sounds perfect, Craig....by the way, did you know that (several years prior to Delta Dawn) Tanya Tucker played a bit role in Jeremiah Johnson? She and her family lived in Utah at the time, and she was one of the little kids Johnson finds hiding in the root cellar...or whatever that hiding place was...

Tanya says her dad was so excited at being on a movie set that he ran around taking home movies all the time, until asked to stop. As she told me, "Daddy just embarrassed the dog out of me!"

Sen. Obama is in the odd position of having unusually passionate backing from his supporters -- his voters are three times as likely to say they are excited about their choice as are Sen. McCain's -- while he has failed so far to win over some other Democratic-leaning voters who could be expected to be on his side. A higher share of voters say they want a Democrat in general to sit in the White House than say that they want Sen. Obama specifically.

Joe Keller - Joe Keller was exonerated after being charged with shipping damaged airplane cylinder heads out of his factory during WWII, inadvertently causing the deaths of 21 pilots. For three and a half years he has placed the blame on his partner and former neighbour, Steven Deever. When the truth comes out, Joe justifies his actions by claiming that he did it for his family. At the end of the play he kills himself in a sad attempt to rid his family of the problems he has caused them and perhaps also to stop Kate from hating him.

Norm Coleman is really on the attack against Franken now....all the comedy coming back to haunt him. Reminds me of how the Repubs buried my friend Dottie Lamm in her run for office in Colorado. Dreams from Obama
"Running for the Democrat nomination, Obama posed as the reliable progressive... He would get out of Iraq, cut a deal with Iran, bomb Pakistan, trash America's free trade agreements, deliver socialist medicine, cool global warming, and "heal" everything that ails you...

Running now against a Republican, and with the progressive vote safely in the bag, he will stay the course in Iraq, confront Iran, show diplomacy in Pakistan, defend free trade, spend cautiously, ignore global warming, and "heal" everything that ails you..."

Marcia, I know this question wasn't directed at me, but I couldn't help but think that Hillary understood the 'Will Lomans'. Not at first, but some where along the road of the campaign, she seemed to change. To really tune it. Maybe the pain of all of those who turned on her helped her see things differently. Or maybe just being out along side so many of the people did. She seemed to come out of this election a better person.

    Gotta go.

good. I learned some surprising stats from the show tonight:

--Almost 50% of Black women are unmarried and many are raising children
    alone
--The most common cause of death for black men between 18 and 30 is
    homicide
--AIDS is growing now fastest in the black community and some black
community leaders say it's an epidemic among blacks
--Many successful black women say they cannot find suitable black
    male partners.

The progressives intellectual base is now out of academia. There whole life is geared toward not having to work with their hands. They view that as a superior life style. Gone are many of the labor activist that worked up through the ranks.
I used to see the attitude in the community organising folks that were paid to organise and had a college degree in the subject. They often viewed themselves superior to the people that had been organising in the neighborhood for years.

  122. Bear,

Those days immediately following 9/11 were a moment in time. We could have marshalled the world's forces to go after Bin Laden in Afghanistan and might have succeeded.

We didn't do that. Instead using the uber patriotism and fear generated by that horrible event, George and company led us into the misadventure in Iraq of the past several years.

Now the question is does it serve our interest NOW to expend bodies and treasure toward the goal of finding one man and his cohorts in Afghanistan? What are the current conditions in that country? Who would be our allies. What goals would best serve both us and the Middle East?

Barging full force into Afghanistan now because we should have done that in the first place, just isn't logical or necessarily in our best interest.

    Whisky,

You do realize that the 30 year civil war was far more manageable than the 1000 year clusterfuck we unleashed instead in Iraq?

I find it ironic that McCain claims that Obama doesn't understand the history of the region when he fully supported the President's plan for the war in Iraq, without any regards to the history of the inherent hatred between the different Iraqi populations. Remember in the first 2004 debate when Kerry chastised Bush about the plans by saying he read his father's book?

McCain is trying to take credit for the surge when he fully supported the president's plan to try the war on the cheap. If they didn't ignore Shinseki's? advice from the start and used enough troops to begin with, a surge would not have been necessary.

This war in Iraq was fought for personal gains on the part of this administration. If we spent half of that money here in the US, our economic climate would be far different and we'd have a modernized electrical grid, roads that weren't crumbling and possibly a better health care system.

We do, but not all interests are equal.

Unfortunately, at the time of 9/11, we didn't have a thoughtful man with a long view of history in office. I knew we were in trouble when the twin tower adorned China souvenirs went on sale and the flags sprouted up like spring flowers on every yard.

It was easier to go into gung ho, bomb 'em to oblivion, mode rather than take the time to prepare and take action that would be effective over the long term to eliminate the terrorists.

International Olympic Committee accuses Iraqi government of interference in sports

Iraqi government suspended nation's Olympic Committee in May

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- The International Olympic Committee has banned Iraq from competing in the upcoming Summer Olympics because of what it says is the government's political interference in sports.

CNN received a copy of the letter, which was sent to Jassim Mohammed Jaffer, Iraqi minister of youth and sports, and Ali Mohsen Ismail, acting secretary general of the Iraqi general secretariat of the Council of Ministers.
    http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/meast/07/24/iraq.olympics/?iref=hpmostpop

"The seven Iraqi athletes who were to travel to China for the Games' start in August are disappointed by the decision, officials said. They include an archer, a weightlifter, a judoka, two rowers and two sprinters, one of whom is Dana Hussain. She became distraught when she heard the news, her coach, Yousif Abdul Rahman, said.

Hussain has been "crying for about two hours now," Abdul Rahman said. "She hasn't stopped. It's like finding out that a close relative has died."

The coach called the decision unfair and said he blames "everyone" -- the Iraqi government and the Iraqi and International Olympic committees."

A few years ago, several good friends of mine got laid off at work. I felt badly for them and I wished that they weren't put into a position where they needed to find another job. I was also very conscious of the fact that I still had a job. We have always supported many charitable organizations at work. Every year, we had sponsored at least 30 different religious-based charities. We had dinners that we paid money for to raise money for charities as well as things like cake auctions. We had some cake auctions where we bid upwards of $200-$300 on a single cake. Those days have ended. Right now, the only real fundraising we do at work is to help fellow employees and their families who are in crisis situations.

The outlook was even worse in the other three states, with dissatisfied voters at 78 percent in Colorado, 81 percent in Wisconsin, and 84 percent in Michigan. "

And we are talking about the same states. It can't be a good sign for Obama. Obama should be blowing McCain out of the water with those numbers yet he is losing ground.

You asked a valid question, "Can anyone honestly think that a person with inexperience in business, inexperience in politics going to be able to step up and solve all this?"

To which I would answer this way...

This administration is filled with people who were considerred experts in both areas and they failed. Hell, W has a Harvard MBA and was supposed to be a CEO president. His personal history is littered with failures and bailouts from family friends. So far as I can see, Obama does not have a history of failures. I know some Texas businessmen, Republicans no less, who are making their employees study the Obama campaign because they are impressed at how well it's been run.

  203. I used to be an EMT for free. Volunteered with my local Emergency Service District. I agree, Corey, that $15 per hour isn't much for such a high-need service. But there are many, many people who do it on a volunteer basis in small fire districts all across this country. And who serve as firefighters as well as EMT's. (I've never had more bruises on my body than I did after a day of being trained to use the 'jaws of life'!)

  206. Political buzz on Pawlenty at fever pitch in veepstakes

The word is that John McCain is nearing a decision on his running mate, and the governor gained ground.

    By PATRICIA LOPEZ, Star Tribune
    Last update: July 23, 2008 - 11:43 PM

Gov. Tim Pawlenty returned as the vice presidential flavor of the week on Wednesday, as national pundits worked themselves into a frenzy over whether Minnesota's governor will be John McCain's running mate.

Oh and on a personal note, I used to be a paperboy for the Minneapolis Star which was then the afternoon paper. The Minneapolis Tribune was the morning paper and as I recall they did a joint edition for Sunday mornings. Of course the paper is one now. The worst memory of being a paperboy was being mauled by a dog when I was making my deliveries. 32 stitches in my arm and 11 in the back of my leg... 3 hours in surgery.

And still I love the paper! :-)

"Remake the World" is slanted negatively to suggest he has ultimate power to control everyone's decision making process and destiny. Interesting article; bad headline.

  243. Champ - my brother-in-law is a doc. He works probably 60+ hours a week, doesn't play golf, drives a 10 + year old car. In over 30 years, he has taken something like 5 sick days, and I suspect they were caused by something at the hospital. Talk about sick building syndrome......

I wouldn't and couldn't have worked like this. He makes good money, but it becomes mist when compared to Wolf Blitzer, Tim Russert, Tweety, KO and the like. They are the ones who are taking the meaning out of a dollar - to them $1 is five minute's work, if that much. CEO' s of insurance companies make much more than docs, and they are granted huge loans with very little interest and THEY DON'T HAVE EXPENSIVE DEGREES in many cases. So, no, I don't see wher the blame can be placed on them. You might be surprised at how many docs are getting out of the business because they are losing money. Whe they are charged $100 to have a test run and they are paid $75, it doesn't add up.

KGC - I turned my tv on this morning to find the channels totally re-worked with no notice. My sister's has been that way for a month or so, so I Iwasn't surprised and luckily had the new schedule. Now I have to get used to the new numbers.

Patsi - I loved that Ellen clip. thanks.

Harborwoman - I checked at Oliver's yesterday. They carry quinoa as the 'bead' in white and red. They have several quinoa pasta styles. They also have rice pasta and jerusalem artichoke & amaranth pasta. Blew my mind.

I just saw a pix of the crowd in Berlin, and have to say the first thing that came into my mind was it was chilling - not against Obama - to see so many Germans in such a confined space. I feel that I can say that because I share a name with one of you-know-who's top advisors. My grandfather looked like his twin.

She is doing well. We had a family reunion at lake Jacomo in BlueSprings. She was able to attend. I was very suprised. Back In April she went back in the hospital to have a pace maker installed. We also had a family meeting about what kind of treatment options she had left, which was none. They were talking about things like keeping her comfortable. It didn't sound good. So I was very suprised when she said she was coming to the reunion. It was a 2 hr trip for her and she stayed for 2 hr so she has gained a lot of strength.
We just hope she can stay out of the hospital for 90 days so medicare will start picking up her hospital bill again.

I'm glad you had a good rest, my hiatus was not so neat, I painted my house, and put in a new fence and tried to keep as busy as possible so I didn't have to listen to the children's hour on the election coverage every day.
I believe I heard that Obama picked up somewhere in the vicinity of 52 million last month???? There are people who can't buy groceries, can't buy gas to get to work, are losing there homes and this 52 million goes exactly where???? Wherever, it makes me sick to think that that's what is going on in this country. We need hundreds of millions to get elected to do what, help the people who die from lack of food and shelter.

    This is disgusting!!!!!!!!!!.

  296. "A large body of research over the years has linked education for women and girls with lower birth rates. Indeed, recent data from many less developed countries have shown that women with at least a secondary-level education eventually give birth to one-third to one-half as many children as women with no formal education. In some of these countries, the fertility of these better-educated women approaches replacement level (2.1 children per woman). A woman in Honduras with no education has, on average 4.9 children, but a Honduran woman with secondary or higher education has 2.2 children. An Ethiopian woman with no education has 6.1 children on average, but an Ethiopian woman with secondary or higher education has 2.0 children. Better-educated women generally are able to exercise more control over their reproductive lives, including delaying marriage and childbearing."

"A dramatic decline in fertility rates during the 20th century coincided with decreased child mortality, access to family planning, economic development, increases in girls' and women's education, and urbanization. Other factors—including stiffer competition for jobs, housing shortages, and government efforts to lower birth rates—also encouraged fertility decline."

Add to that the fact that they practically blacklisted him after he told Tucker - or Dan - that they had been very impartial in their coverage. Craig used to be on much more often than he is, I think. I found this blog by googling where the heck is Craig Crawford. I wonder if that is the site Craig suggested for complaining to msnbc

I emailed all their shows and execs many many many times, and they really don't care. They had a good thing going and they blew it, as far as I'm concerned.

WELCOME BACK, CRAIG, by the way. You were most definitely missed. I love the shallow thoughts and wish you would do more of them. They're more observational than reporting, and I love people's observations.

I have no strong opinion on the fence between US and Mexico, there are good points both for and against. Not blaming Obama for a single thing. Well, I’d say there are some who think they are educated and in control of the future. I’ve read that fundamentalist Christians are having more children than anyone in history, and they are doing so that they may take over the political realm of our democracy.

  312. Obama's Posters: Message in the Image

"There is something unsettling and very familiar in the Obama poster campaign ... this image appropriates the graphic style of totalitarian Soviet propaganda. It recalls the idealzed portraits and personality cult of the "Beloved Leader" such as Stalin and Lenin. The leader, face illuminated by a "holy" light, looks off to the horizon and sees the truth that is not available to his mere mortal followers, who must look up to his image.

The one-word message offers a simple (simple-minded) promise of a utopian existence."

  313. Julie,

I, like you, don’t come here much (for many obvious reasons…just someone who has opinions), but I don’t believe there should be a fence. Yes, we need to control who comes over the borders, but we also need the workers who come over those borders. I don’t blame anyone anywhere for wanting to support their families, and we have companies on this side of the fence who want to employ those workers. It is just how do we control who comes here to work? No terrorists! Actually, I like what Bill Maher says “Just build a giant WallMart and have the Mexicans come in the back door and the customers go out the front door” (or, something like that).

Obama will (or has) address this question, if he had not done so already. I actually don’t know what he has said in this regard, but I will most definitely look to see. He will definitely be a better president, IMO, than the old man now running who has a very bad temper and forgets much, in spite of his brave service to this country. As General Wesley Clark said, I don’t believe being a prisoner of war makes you a commander in chief (or, something like that).

“anonymous”, I’m in my happy place. I will go to another happy place tomorrow. Can't you have a debate about anything? I’m not angry or bitter; I’m just trying to make a point. What’s wrong with that? At least I put a name out there, unlike you.

I think some on this site don’t even know what a happy place is unless it’s just their same ole posts with their same ole people saying the same old thing. No debate there. Huh?

I’m outta here. Now go to it!

Yes it was Criminal and that was the advice given after months of are attorneys fighting Blue Cross and the local hospital.Yea my Mom had to go before a judge and explain and even the judge said before the court how shameful for a country to treat its citizens in such a way!! I then switched her to a hospital 80 miles round trip from home that would take Blue Cross and could give her the weekly doses of Chemo.Oh ya the kicker after my mom died the hospital said she owed $38000 in medical bills and Blue Cross was rejecting the bill because they said they weren't coded properly. If you have a serious continuing medical condition in this country your in deep trouble and for the uninsured its even worse.....

The first libertarian intellectual was Lao-tzu, the founder of Taoism...

Lao-tzu developed a radical libertarian creed. For Lao-tzu the individual and his happiness was the key unit and goal of society. If social institutions hampered the individual's flowering and his happiness, then those institutions should be reduced or abolished altogether. To the individualist Lao-tzu, government, with its "laws and regulations more numerous than the hairs of an ox," was a vicious oppressor of the individual, and "more to be feared than fierce tigers."

I am mesmerized watching the cyclists blast down the Alps at 90 kph. The French and Italian towns and villes are so beautiful, the sunflower fields, the mountain backdrops while the race goes on in the valleys. It all ends Sunday on the Champs Elysees.

It's nice to see Obama promise to "tear down walls" that separate us from our European friends...or would-be friends.
Chris Matthews set that western Congresswoman straight when she insisted there were no walls . The French have been demonized and ridiculed ever since Bush took office , because they wanted no part of Bush' Iraq folly. It will be nice if Obama can tame the hatred they have for the US.
