funny how it's OK when the right changes its mind and decides to do this, while when Obama suggested something similar, he was accused of everything from high treason to puttin' on airs.

  13. "...when Obama suggested something similar, he was accused of everything from high treason to puttin' on airs"

Show me where this was said.

In fact, the "right" has consistently said the proper diplomacy was back-channel communications, proxy advocates, talks in third countries (what this appears to be), all culminating with talks at the secretarial level, and, ultimately, talks between the national leaders.

I think your comment was pejorative to the extreme, besides being in bad taste.

Sending an American presence to a meeting in Geneva Run by the EU is not on the same level as the president of the US going to Iran and meeting with government leaders there.

It is a good sign that the adults are in charge of our Iranian policy, not the cheney faction.

  18. Has MoJo even seen The Daily Show. They do have some conservative guests; Stewart has to tell the audience not to boo when you invite someone to your house. And, they have done a few BO jokes, but the reaction of the studio audience is not strong; a bit of a delayed reaction, confusion as to why someone is picking on their golden child.

Clearly, they didn’t have problems making fun of Hil’ry, Kerrey & other Dems. Nope, just BO. Maybe he doesn’t have a sense of humor & he’s not a funny subject…you know who else that describes? AQ. (And….go.)

  21. P.M.,

I've suspended my subscription to Newsweek because their editorial policy was so in-the-tank for Mr Obama at the expense of Mrs Clinton, whom they held-up to ridicule.

If you're talking about the cover, with his photograph, appearing on Newsweek.com, why is it offensive?

  41. Prof Marcia -- I have the pages of the Chandra Levey story saved to read for when I have a some time to concentrate. Sari Horwitz is a great investigative reporter who cut her teeth working the police blotter at the Washington Post. Sari has won not just one, but two Pulitzers for her work on DC's horrible foster care system and the DC "Sniper."

Right now I have a houseful of kids -- seven plus my own two -- most of whom are taller than I am -- who have huge appetites and full activity schedules with summer schools, swim teams, karate lessons, band camp, and scouts interspersed with sight-seeing and amusement park trips. These days, if I'm not in the kitchen, I'm either in the car, poolside, or riding a roller coaster. Secretly, I love it all, but I do feel like I go brain dead for 8 weeks of summer.

I continue to see polls shifting every week. According to some sources,
considering the margin of error, Obama and McCain are almost
tied. But, I admit I'm no expert in the area of data gathering. It just
seems that it's a tight race.

Considering it's the Democrats election to lose, I would have thought all polls would show Obama ahead by double digits. But, that hasn't been the case.

  63. Marcia,

I Agree, by all measures it should be an election the democrats can not lose, but Obama has not yet been able to shake McCain.

Trying to read anything into the polls is like reading that fortuneteller's crystal ball, here's differing perspective of the same poll (CBS/NYT)

CBS News reports "Obama Leads, but race fluid"

Obama 45%; McCain 39%--6 point spread unchagned since June, but more than 1 - 10 now say they are undecided (twice as many as last month)

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/07/15/opinion/polls/main4263422.shtml

While the NYT uses the same poll & accents its findings:

"Poll finds Obama candidacy isn't closing Divide on Race"

Americans are sharply divided by race....with blacks & whites holding vastly different views of Obama

Then the "interviewer" either just sits there until the politician feels like he/she has to say more, or keeps hammering for more info...and the followup becomes the story.

  84. Alfred E. Obama is Not Funny!!

"Mr. Obama is very easily offended, like Don Quixote, the Man of La Mancha, who is constantly looking for the smallest slights to his egg-shell fragile ego.

The Obama campaign just loves those Nuremberg-style rock rallies. They're in control. They love thousands of worshipful Obama groupies. They're in control. But they just hate one-on-one Townhall debates because they're not in control. That's why Obama is now going to Europe, where his rockstar brand still has the suckers screaming for joy. There are no tough questions for Obama in Europe. He loves that worship, he needs it, he thrives on it."

A good point about respect for the President.
The problem for McCain is Bush just can't go over into a corner and shut up. So every time McCain gets a good talking point against the Democrats Bush has to open his mouth and poisons the well. A good example is the off shore drilling, which polls favorably with Americans, McCain had a winner until Bush jumped in and now it is a Bush proposal. Any linkage to Bush is the kiss of death for McCain.

  88. Gordo,

Go offline for awhile. Read the first book of Don Quixote: there are a number of good, recent English translations: the best by reputation is by an American woman whose name I don't recall this morning.

The original Quixote character in book one is quite different from the canard your source described.

The second book was written supposedly to please Queen Elizabeth I who also is credited with requesting Shakespeare revive Falstaff in a new play. There wasn't much worth adding to the original novel: Cervantes saw he a chance to have better control over his title and make a bigger fortune.

He also made a mockery of his own DQ character.

Then the "interviewer" either just sits there until the politician feels like he/she has to say more, or keeps hammering for more info...and the followup becomes the story.“

I agree with Obama that there are good Muslims in this country. I’ve met them. There is a big population of Middle Easterns in the Central Ohio area, so you come into contact with them regularly. I actually entered a shopping mall that is specifically for Middle Eastern foods. I can say that almost everyone I saw in that mall smiled, nodded, or said hi to me. They know that they have been cast out as all being terrorists so maybe they feel they must go out of their way to be friendly.

So I can see why Obama went into more detail with his answer.

With Congress at 9% -- there is a good chance of a big change. It will be interesting to see what happens to the Steny Hoyer types. I think even if they survive this fall, in two years people are going to go after them.

I have been following various pieces of food safety legislation and the progress is terrible. Industries targeted in the recent salmonella outbreaks would have been better served if the FDA had even completed their own plan, let along passed some of the more progressive pending legislation.

Not too much sympathy for the tomato industry though as they opposed any tracing legislation. Pennywise----pound foolish.

We use more lightbulbs in Times Square (or maybe Las Vegas) than the rest of the world put together. It is time to put the lightbulb behind us and live in the dark. Cigna NY has been approved to withdraw from the HMO/PPO business in NY State by the NY Insurance Commission.

Providers have not been notified of this. There is a great deal of confusion among subscribers and state representatives: the insurance commission is revealing no information about why it has allowed Cigna to do this in such an economy.

There are no controls in place over what any group or individual policy holders will have to pay with their next carrier... which is particularly troubling for people with pre-existing conditions.

Cigna will continue to have employer insurance in NYS. Oxford, Empire, GHI, Atetna all have similar products at similar rates. The question is why was Cigna allowed to keep employer insurance while cancelling individual coverage (HMO). And they were not the cheapest of similar products. I would go to your doctors and ask them which alternative they accept.

The reason Obama leads despite the poll numbers on critical topics is that they have not gone head to head. Candidates are positioning for September and Obama has already said some things in stone he will regret.

If I were McCain, I would be fashioning a comprehensive economic and energy plan people can digest. He can draw attention to the sweet deal bailout, the no drilling, the extensive Democratic social programs and the fact Middle and Lower income tax cut during Bush reduced Fed revenue far more than the tax cuts for the wealthy.

Foreign policy should be a no brainer, but McCain had better up his marketing and stump deliveries.

  151. Jack: is it sexism to prefer one candidate over another for reasons that have nothing to do with gender, and everything to do with the not supported candidate's measurable polarization factor?

Too broad a brush, my friend.

We can never know it, but I cannot imagine Hillary Clinton's polling numbers would be anywhere approaching Obama's in the state matchups.

National polls tell you little; state by state matchups are more reliable.

I think the Democratic primaries selected the most competitive candidate, and that's painful to some here.

    Posted by: a reader | July 16, 2008 12:48 PM

  152. Jack: A word in defense of Sen Obama and his campaign. We must be careful not to confuse the Obama campaign with the Obama surrogates and supporters.
I do not find Sen Obama to be much more sexist than many men I have known ... I am, however, surprised to find such a degree of unconscious sexism in a man of his age. My quarrel with the campaign was always their attempt to diminish Sen Clinton's experience and Pres Clinton.
I do like to think of myself as a loyal Democrat, and I never did understand how it helped the Democratic brand to ignore every Democratic President since JFK and to attempt to diminish Pres Clinton's reputation.

Posted by: maggisd Author Profile Page | July 16, 2008 12:48 PM

  153. reader: You may be right about Obama being the most competitive candidate. Time will tell. In state by state polls done just before the end of the Democratic primaries, Sen Clinton actually was doing better than Sen Obama in the state by state matchups against McCain. But that is neither here nor there at present.

The real question for many voters is not who can win, but who can govern most effectively? Part of the current scenario is generational ... while there have been younger Presidents than Sen Obama, he has less experience than any successful candidate of the 20th century. That worries some people ... particularly old geezers like me.

Posted by: maggisd Author Profile Page | July 16, 2008 12:55 PM

  154. Max,

All that is said and done.

The NYS Insurance Commission now says that its agreement with CIgna is for a TOTAL withdrawal from NYS HMO/PPO business.

What is copy on the letter you received two months ago?

The quote from the most recent letter (June 27th) follows:

"We will withdraw from the HMO market and no longer offer HMO and HMO Point-of-Service products in New York, and as a result of this withdrawl from the market, we are discontinuing ALL (my emphasis) existing New York HMO and HMO Point-of-Service coverage."

The supervisors with whom I speak at NYS Department of Health find this deeply confusing and are not getting answers from the Insurance Commission.

Cigna has changed its story in conversations three times. Yesterday it was all accounts. Today it was private ones. Today was with an operator. Yesterday was with a supervisor.

There are two immediate problems: one is that the rates of those with pre-existing conditions will go entirely out of control. I pay a near to overwhelming amount monthly now and have been told it could rise by at least 25%.

Also, any number of those insurers are NOT accepted by many hematologists and oncologists.

So I am working with Patterson's office, State reps and the City Department of Health. My Assemblyman has CP and is incensed over Denalli's opaquity over any issue here.

    PUMA

Is "Party Unity My Ass". The sites started popping up all over indicating Clinton supporters who were now going to go off in a huff and vote for McCain. The media blew this up into some kind of massive movement. I think it is a Republican thing and that there are very few real PUMAs

Almost everyone I know who had supported Clinton are going to vote Democratic anyway but as of now not contributing and not working. Others (and I'm still considering this one) are considering staying home or voting third party. Though now that the Green and Libertarian candidates have been named, this option is probably closed for me. So I just get to be grouchy in November.

The Obama surrogates are the Obama campaign.

Iam not confused and I am not making a broad sweeping accusation. I am talking about things I have posted here sveral times that were statements by spokesmen and people in the campaign. Even including the candidate himself. One of them may have been a misstatement but after a while the pattern developes. At no time , except for a couple of off the cuff apologies when driven to the wall , has the Obama campaign done anything about it. All the people that made the offensive statements are still there and are being trotted out to defend Obama.

KC, that is what I call great political insight. Bad news is becoming the norm for the centerpiece of the news, and largely because of Bush's ridiculous governance. It's that Republican thing - stay true to your principles, no matter how clearly history reveals how erroneous they may be.

I am more than willing to concede that the Obama primary campaign was masterful. But David Axelrod and David Plouffe are not policy advisers. The policy advisers I have seen and read about do not impress me ... until very recently Prof Goolsbie (sp) was the senior economic adviser, and I continue to find Sen Obama's economic policies sketchy.
While Susan Rice and Samantha Power may be brilliant, I find the one pedantic and the other naive. I have little respect for Brzezenski and nothing but disdain for Tony McPeak.

  169. Jamie,

Thanks for the info...as you can see, my acronym hat doesn't work to well...

I notice that McCain spoke to the NAACP, politically a good move. I do have the following question:

He proposed using school vouchers to let inner city kids attend private schools and I wonder...

    1. If good competitive private schools have to turn away the kids of very affluent parents because of the competitive nature of things, why would they admit any kid with a voucher and who would require a scholarship?

    2. On the same note, I know the average tuition for a private school in the Northeast is around $10,000. What good will a $2,000 voucher be? If the student can't get a scholarship, then what?

    3. Will these affluent people, regardless of race, be comfortable with allowing inner city "thugs" being within their midst? Honestly, how many of you can drive down the MLK Boulevard in your city with the windows down and the doors unlocked?

Perhaps I'm being too much of a cynic but the issue of vouchers seems to me a Republican way to cripple the teachers union while at the same time finding another way to get public money into the hands of religious organizations.

Since he voted in favor of torture earlier this year, didn't he in effect, diminish a part of his story? 180. Bear: I am personally opposed to vouchers because I do think it weakens the public school system.
Most vouchers to urban kids would likely be used at parochial schools, which continue to have relatively modest fees. They would likely be used primarily to assist parents who already find the money to send their children to parochial schools.
IMHO this is just one of those proposals that sounded good to some Republican once upon a time and has become part of the canon. There's about zero chance it would ever get through a Democratic congress.
Personally, education is one of the areas where I part company with the Democratic Party as a whole ... I'd like to see less Federal involvement and far fewer mandates...but that's just me.

dog -- this is a distortion of late term abortion, and you know it. First of all, these are almost never performed. People like you have already poisoned that well of safety for women.

There are cases where a late term abortion is a necessity. I will tell you of one in particular, someone I know very well, who was pregnant for the first time...terrible problems all the way through.

She nearly died twice. Finally, tests toward the end of the sixth month showed that the baby was basically brain dead, but not technically dead.

This woman was nearly suicidal because at first it seemed she would have to just wait and hope the pregnancy didn't kill her before giving birth to a vegetable.

I'm quite sure some pro-lifers would prefer she hadn't gone ahead in that early seventh month and terminated the pregnancy. She desperately wanted children. And ended up adopting.

But oh, yeah -- she's just a selfish bitch who got a little "down" and killed her baby.

These kinds of conversations make me ill.

  182. dog's: I don't view "societal good" as pertinent to the question of abortion.
    I support Roe v Wade.
The state has an interest in making certain that late-term abortions (and not all so-called PBOs are late-term) are done in safe and sterile conditions, in a hospital, by a physician.
The belief that a physician would murder a viable near-term fetus (one that could live outside the womb) or that a woman would choose that option suggests either a lack of knowledge on the subject or a contempt for women that is frightening.

    1. Catholic school food is better than many restaurants, never mind a public school. Even if you didn't like the meal choice, you could go behind the counter and make PP&J.

    2. The Catholic school had much smaller class sizes than my public school. I never had more than 20 students in a class while at the public school, I never had less than 20.

    3. My "honors" courses at Catholic school barely kept up with a Level 1 course at my public high school. I made the change mid year and I was lost for the first month at the public school. Thank God I had some great teachers who were able to get me caught up quickly.

    4. The biggest difference was that my public school teachers were just better. I took honors course load to make sure I was in a competitive classroom environment. I found that more challenging classes taught by the right teacher were easier to manage than less challenging classes

  193. Bear: As with everything else, this may have to do with time and place. It used to be accepted as a given that Catholic schools were more rigorous than public schools. Certainly they were more structured and disciplined. But that was when Catholic school rooms were filled with dedicated teaching nuns.
In recent years, however, that has not been the case. Given that salaries at parochial schools are much lower, and that many states do not require private school teachers to be certified, teaching standards may have suffered.

Supposing that Sen McCain were to actually win (very doubtful), he would still be facing not just a Democratic Senate, but a Senate with a sufficient number of moderate Republicans (of the women, only Elizabeth Dole is actually pro-life) that his chances of appointing another Roberts or Alito would be slim to none.

  204. OBAMA’S FAKE BIRTH CERTIFICATE

"I theorized that the fuzzy outline found in between the letters of the data fields on the Kos image is a dead giveaway that these letters were made by a graphics program.

All one needs to do to prove that Kos image was altered, is to view the space between the double “s” in Obama’s (alleged) middle name, “HUSSEIN,” under increased magnification, such as making the image 300% or larger.

    Why is this significant?

Because when you look at any other image that really is a true copy of an original COLB, the space between letters mostly contains green-shaded pixels. These green pixels come from the green part of the pattern that is found on the actual paper document.

Clearly, when comparing Obama’s to the new COLB, there is very little in the way of green shaded pixels between the letters on the Obama image as compared to the newer one.

To conclude: I just proved that the Kos image is not a true copy of a paper document by demonstrating why the text on the Kos image looks so differently from the text on the new COLB image. I have ruled out ALL other theories as to how the Kos image got to be the way it is.

I have also shown that all of the images on the internet are directly related to the Kos image, so if the Kos image is a fake, then all of them are fake."

  205. Dog,

I'm glad you understand about loyalty.

In McCain's case I see something even more special than institutional loyalty.

Consider the brutalization he's received over the years--from his captors, from his party, and from his own president. In each and every case he's gotten beyond the hurt and anger going on to take care of business.

To a person, every AF POW I met who stayed in the service exhibited the same absolute dedication to things bigger than themselves.

Does this say anything about the substance or quality of a McCain administration? It says little beyond the dedication he would bring to the job.

So far, we've heard little about his platform beyond characterizations of it by others. I am curious as to what the real thing will look like.

I attended a Catholic Elementary school in Milford, MA...this was run by nuns and I still shudder when I think of Sister Thomas Catherine...your stereotypical, crotchety old nun who loved to paddle more than an overzealous S&M dominatrix.

I attended a Catholic High School that was run by the Xavarian Brothers. They had a nice faculty but I am sure than most of the new teachers there, especially those teaching foreign languages were not certified.

As for Fort Worth, if the school is run by a competent principle, the school will do well. I have encountered some principals who couldn't manage a McDonald's, let alone a school though...

  207. Bear

"He proposed using school vouchers to let inner city kids attend private schools and I wonder..."

I'm going to play devil's advocate on this one since I firmly believe that the first priority for funds should be the public school system, but just to present the type of program I would favor.

A voucher would not necessarily help a student get into any of the known private schools, but it could encourage the opening of private schools within low income areas in churches or the homes of talented teachers. Think of a Marva Collins type teacher getting government funds to open a school in their home or small store front that would truly DEMAND performance from their students.

    http://www.marvacollins.com/biography.html

It is a shame that more public schools cannot provide the small class room size and standard of excellence. When you are talking about children born into poverty, living in high crime area, frequently neglected by parents who may have alcohol and drug problems (talking economics here folks, not race), the type of one on one instruction they might get in a one room school house or church basement just might save their lives and give them a future.

  211. "Abortion On Demand" is one of those Republican naming phrases. They give it a negative name and then slander anyone who doesn't believe the way they do as some sort of baby killer willing to slaughter an infant up to the day before delivery.

As to my own beliefs. I favor anything the woman wants in the first trimester. There is no way this organism could survive outside of the womb. It is her body and her decision. BTW religiously until very very recent times, this was not considered abortion. The concept of "quickening" applied http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quickening

After 20 weeks, I would freely honor the exceptions (rape, incest, life of the mother) and I MIGHT add quality of life for the infant though that one makes me cringe a bit since it is so subjective. This should be a decision made between a woman and her doctor after consultation. For everyone else, I wouldn't throw up barriers, but she should be aware that infants as tiny as 24 weeks of gestation have survived and adoption is always an option.

Third trimester. Stricter bariers and counseling. This is a viable human being. It can live separate from the woman whether she chooses to keep it or not. Almost no abortions are performed during this time period that are not required by medical considerations. It is often a heartbreaking decision by people who have looked forward with joy to having a child. I would bar someone who was just casually dispensing with a burden (how did they get this far before that decision?). It simply isn't that long until delivery. For all others it is strictly between the woman and her doctor.

  213. Jamie: Having worked in hospitals for so many years, I find it difficult to believe that any physician or hospital ethics board would countenance a late-term abortion of a viable infant. So long as state regulations require that third trimester abortions be performed in a certified hospital, I find no basis at all for the fear that viable infants will be destroyed.
In the last Senate debate on the subject, Sen Feinstein solicited input from the Chairman of Obstetrics at USF Hospital (? Moffett). He could find only three cases, all of which involved fetuses that were not only not viable but represented a threat to the long-term physical health of the mother. These mothers did not have clinical conditions that might have caused them to opt for an abortion at an earlier stage of pregnancy; the nondeveloping fetus itself posed a risk to the physical health of the mother. All three procedures were performed on an emergency basis.
The debate has never been about late-term abortions. The debate began when Sen Smith of New Hampshire (I don't remember his first name any more) received information that certain facilities were performing DNX second trimester procedures and then selling the fetus for body parts to various other facilities. This gruesome practice could have been stopped by other means, but the right wing seized on the procedure itself and we now have the disgusting situation where second- and third-trimester abortions must involve either killing the fetus by the use of strong drugs or dismembering it in the womb.

  215. Vouchers.

I think they're a lousy idea, a sham to get around the racial aspects of public education.

Here, in my school district in Columbia, all the schools are well integrated, albeit some more-so than others. And, all the schools are well regarded. (I'm talking about the Richland 2 School District). They are good enough that people living in other districts try to sneak in.

Within the district, so long as capacity permits, parents are allowed to enroll their kids in schools in the district other than where they would normally attend based on their address. In doing this, they must accept responsibility for transporting the kids to and from school.

Transportation is the big kicker when it comes to students taking advantage (if there really is an advantage) of the program. Quite simply, being able to attend a distant school depends on how much a family is willing to spend on transportation, and how much inconvenience a family is willing to endure.

The ability to move around in the district has lessened pressure to attend private schools.

  216. Looks like Charlie Wrangle is in the news again. Who says republicans are the only corrupt politicians.

U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) hasn't been having the best week. The House Ways and Means Committee Chairman relinquished his rent-controlled campaign office yesterday, after intense scrutiny in the wake of a New York Times article that exposed his holding of four rent-controlled apartments. And today, the congressman is facing the possibility of a House ethics probe after a Washington Post piece published yesterday, revealed he's been soliciting donations from corporations with business interests in front of his committee for an academic center that bears his name.

    Way to go Charlie!

  219. When I was a lad, the neighborhood moms' complaint to the school superintendent about Mrs. Grime's violence, was met by Dr. Forrest E. Conner's reply, "Go home ladies, and mind your own business.

Connor didn't last long, and neither did Mrs. Grimes. Some of the 'busybody' moms got on the school board and worked to upgrade services and beef up curricula. Six years later, Sputnik finally convinced even the last of the republicans to surrender to better public education.

Meanwhile, over at the nearest Catholic High School, some of the Christian Brothers belted heads so hard that kids became deaf. Many students had trouble keeping their minds on lessons, because they lived in terror. School Admin was deaf to complaints - prolly old graduates. City gov would not prosecute, and civil lawsuits got nowhere, because jurors simply wouldn't vote against churchmen in the '50s.

I attended a high quality, small, private, all male, secular, non-ROTC, military prep school where all the violence was carried out by students while the Masters looked the other way. I understand that the prep school curriculum is still outstanding and secular, but that all the other characteristics have changed.

The point: what is the guarantee that private schools will continue to provide superior educations? If we allow republicans to satisfy their lust to destroy public schools, how will we re-invent public schools when the private schools are once again degraded and mediocre?

I looked in on the modern school. It really isn't that much different: Middle to upper middle class students. It has almost completely transitioned from all white to all AA, but it is still definitely a pretty neat school.

  228. Pogo,

This is what I used to call, a 'separating' market. It separates many unsophisticated investors from their money.

I don't bother following the market on a daily basis, but usually when you see great big movements, like today's, coming on the heels of a major change in a significant commodity, it indicates short covering.

We're in a bear market. The trend is downward. We still haven't had the major sell-off that indicates we're at the bottom. An upward shift will often be followed by a greater downward movement as a new equilibrium is achieved.

I would see a significant short-term rise like today's as an opportunity to buy puts. Or, to sell short.. I used to sell short against the box, but some of the advantage of doing that is gone.

And, I see nothing wrong with having an out of the money position in calls just in case. I used to do the OEX.

"First, let me add another nail to the coffin. What's wrong with this picture?

These two date fields were cropped from the original Kos image. If the Kos image was a true copy of an original, then, the entire date fields would be of equal width.

BUT, the date of birth (ABOVE) is a full 10 pixels LARGER than the date below, the date the COLB was filed. The font in both dates are the same. This anomaly does not happen in real life.

    Now onto more nails...

It is time to stop the fraud being perpetrated on the American public. It is time to demand that Obama produce a paper record of his birth instead of carrying on this charade."

    WHY THE RACE IS TIED

"After almost six weeks of a constant Obama lead, generally in the five to seven-point range, Scott Rasmussen’s daily tracking poll records two consecutive days of a tie race (July 12-13) and a one-point Obama lead on July 14. What happened to the Democrat’s lead?

Obama has carried flip-flopping to new heights.

Obama’s shifts have nothing to do with altered circumstances, just a change in the political calendar.

But McCain can attract liberal votes. He doesn’t need to bleed Obama only from the right. If moderate liberals are disgusted by Obama’s obvious attempts at chicanery and repositioning, they might just cross the aisle."

Kansas is not as Republican as it used to be. I think the Obama of last fall could have competed in Kansas.
The Obama that emerged from the primary battle? Way too far to the left. Now all his attempts to look centrist just look like he is pandering.

  328. The Jesse Jackson flap was a classic example of how the media blows up a story wherein:

    1. Someone says something in terms we all know he must use (or could at least imagine him using) all the time in private.

    2. Said sayer was overheard only because the dead mike was a live mike.

    3. So what we all thought was true (or at least could imagine was true) simply turns out to be true.

And that, apparently, is called news.

  332. Sturge...if it is Germanic in origin, it most surely described some ultra-specific type of weirdness, not just general weirdness. Because that's how the German language works:

"VIRED = Tendency to wear Scandinavian headwear and masturbate while plotting conquest of Central Europe for lebensraum purposes."

And, if you're doing exactly the same thing, except you're wearing a toga -- there's a totally different word to describe that.

  366. You guys are hilarious - keep it up.

Queen of Prose - probably Jane Austen. I am also hooked on an obscure Scottish writer named Dorothy Dunnett i her historical fiction - like nothing else I've ever read.

Queen of Poetry - Emily, probably, but can't forget Sara Teasdale or Edna St Vincent Millay.

King of Prose - Dickens? Twain? LeCarre?

King of Poetry - has to be Will..................

Tweety had a fight with Pat Buchanon today - I didn't hear anything but, "Now, Pat, you're wrong and you know it...." and then I muted it again and changed channels. The thought of that man in the Senate is ludicrous.

I think the mood of the country is shaped to a great deal by the personality of the White House and pres. When Bill was there, he loved the job so much and was generally in such a good optimistic mood, the whole country was more pleasant.

With W, he has been/is so ready to tell the world that he won't let them put anything over on us - he started off accusing the world of trying to hurt our economy and it just wasn't gonna happen - he's so confrontational and ready to be threatened, that I think it shows in the mood of the country and some of the horrific crimes we are seeing.

If Obama doesn't want Hillary around, it had better be stated openly, otherwise he'll say she isn't living up to her promises. Just my opinion, that's all.
