  1. Happy Friday ladies and gentlemen,

Since one of the topics yesterday was taking quizzes to determine our
inner personalities and prejudices, here's my contribution.

    Are You a Redneck? Test.

What's your favorite thing to do on a Saturday night?
    A. Imbibe from a bottle of 30 year old scotch on my yacht.
    B. Look in the mirror and shout, "Al Pacino! Al Pa-cheen-oh!"
    C. Make fun of the hillbillies who live next door.
    D. Cook up some grits and hog jowls.
    E. "Breedin"

For more of the test go to:

  2. "Are You a Redneck? Test"

Ha -- I don't fit most of the answers....and I consider myself a part-time redneck....I have a fabulous t-shirt that says: The Great White Trash Conspiracy.

  3. Bethy -- Yes to your medical post from last thread! Especially the part about second opinions.

  4. Did anyone discuss McCain's gorilla joke yesterday? For those who were Clinton supporters and now say you'll vote for McCain, do you still have that position?

Posted by: Mr. Democrat | July 18, 2008 7:09 AM

  5. patsi, have you ever seen ernest matthew mickler's books "white trash cooking" and "sinkin spells, hot flashes, fits and cravins"? in addition to some basic (and i mean basic) recipes, he has some wonderful pictures of old timey picnics and down home thangs.

    Posted by: patd | July 18, 2008 7:10 AM

  6. Harper Lee's quote about Mickler's white trash cooking book: "I have never seen a sociological document of such beauty - the photographs alone are shattering. ....Now that it's harder than ever to identify the genuine article on sight - with two generations of prosperity white trash looks like gentry - we've long needed something other than the ballot box to remind us of their presence: [WTC] is a beautiful testament to a stubborn people of proud and poignant heritage."

  7. Aw, man. I could've written the "are you a redneck" quiz, having lived in Tennessee for over 30 years. I remember one from years ago on a Jeff Foxworthy calendar that said something like, "You know you're a redneck if your high school marching band plays 'The Waffle House Song.'

  10. Boop, Patsi, 9/11

I have Crohn's. The inflammation from that disease affects everything from my vision to my ability to walk. Every four weeks I go for a Remicade infusion. Although that treatment is extremely expensive (reimbursed at about $5.2K each time) it is only somewhat effective. Because of the Remicade I have managed to avoid surgery (which is not a curative for Crohn's) and have been off Prednisone for the past six-years.

Pain control is still an issue for me. Because of the intractable pain from the polyarthralgias accompnying the disease, and a herniated disk in my neck, I take lots of darvocet and tons of neurontin.

I absolutely will not take any substance based on anecdotals. I will go to www.ccfa.org to see what they say about the substance, and I may do a google looking for opinion from major treatment centers.

I have not come across one single substance that appears to have a significant chance of improving my condition without causing significant damage in the process.

Like most Crohnie's, I realize that I can do much to control flares in my condition by dietary control. But, even in that measure, one person's success may be another's disaster.

The last time I looked (it was several years ago) the average cost of keeping a Chronie going was about $100k a year.

  12. Flatus....
thanks for that post on your disease.....
my hubby just found out last night that one of his good friends was diagnosed with Crohn's..... I had him read your post....
the weird thing is this guy is a hiking trail runner..... and hiking trails out here always means going up and down several mountains.... for all intents and purposes, this guy was physically fit....

Dex.... thanks for the pictures on Vietnam..... sorry to hear that medicine didn't sit right with you..... I had a very bad reaction this past winter to a new diabetes medicine.... Byetta.... I stopped taking it on my own and my doctor told me it was the right move.... put me on something else and now I'm back in full control....

    oh yeah...... good morning gang....

  13. Catching up on the summer drink posts --

Summer Gimlet with muddled cucumber, Hendricks gin and lime

Here's my unsolicited medical advice for people over 60 --get the shingles vaccine. A friend just got shingles and yuck. The vaccine doesn't work for everyone but even if you get it (and the older you get the the odds increase) it will be less severe.

When the spinach ecoli event happpend the FDA moved quickly to establish a food inspection program and safety program for leafy green. http://www.ccof.org/foodsafety.php

Why can't they act quickly now and establish a program for tracing the rest of the produce. The technology is in place.

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker Author Profile Page | July 18, 2008 8:21 AM

  14. One other shingles related note -- if you have shingles and are around people who have not had chicken pox...you can give it to them.

And good morning everyone! It's full moon time --
if you can make here in time, we will be paddling tonight.

  15. "Did anyone discuss McCain's gorilla joke yesterday?"

That was an old joke he's used....one of MANY that men use, Bye Bye. McCain sure ain't no feminist. But then, so far he hasn't paraded out on stage sneering to the song "I Got 99 Problems But a Bitch Ain't One."

  17. "Aw, man. I could've written the "are you a redneck" quiz, having lived in Tennessee for over 30 years."

Mary -- too true...I've lived here now since 1983. I've posted this so many timnes (just because I love the story) -- but my intro to TN politics was when I first moved here and saw them elect a guy to state office from his jail cell. Gotta love it.

  18. "The last time I looked (it was several years ago) the average cost of keeping a Chronie going was about $100k a year. "

There's the rub. I know that should I get such a condition, I can just kiss off, because I lost my health insurance some time back. And unless you are 65 or living in abject poverty, there's nowhere to go. Nowhere.

There are arthritis medicines right now that I don't buy because of the expense.

The most damning statement about this whole chickenlittle stupid incident.

"The FDA has tested produce, farms and warehouses and hasn't found evidence of the strain of salmonella associated with the illnesses, Acheson said. The government may never determine whether tomatoes were the cause, he said"

  23. The Florida tomato growers are considering suing the FDA -- the loss to the tomato industry has been huge

I am sympathetic but not too much since the tomato growers lobbied against the tracing legislation which would have cleared them much earlier.

The loss to the industry would have covered the cost of the tracing technology by a lot.

    Good morning
I mostly wish for the memory of this administration to fade. The only exception is a monument of some sort dedicated to the enormous stupidity of this administration. You have to admit it is hard to raise that high and be that stupid.
I think everybody, with the exception of family and paid staff, are just waiting for it to be over with.

  25. Patsi, so far as insurance is concerned I completely understand how fortunate I am. But, even with that, it took years to get the government to honor the promises they made soldiers in enticing them to make the military their career.

The common treatments for arthritis aren't an option for me. The old 'specific' was "take aspirin until your ears ring." I liked feldene, but it's off the list, too.

The people who get Remicade are generally very well insured. The over-65 retirees often come-in from assisted living facilities and have Medicaid as their supplement to Medicare. All of us know what that means for their financial situation.

I've talked to both my rheumatologist and G.I. doc about alternatives to Remicade. They are out there, but there's no assurance they will be as efficacious. And, the big kicker is, if I stop the Remicade, it will be ineffective if I restart it.

Damned, arthritis. It is truly one of the major curses of getting old after having engaged in a 'physical' lifestyle.

  28. flatus,

    Thank you for your openness.

All I can add is something simple.

As we're all our own control group (and petri dishes), I was too busy with both work and a current insurance nightmare to go out and get more of that kombucha.

So I've gone for an unplanned 36 hours without it.

When I got up this morning at five, I was drenched in sweat, experienced a return of the GI issues and neuropathy.

So I'm off to the store. Perhaps the thing cited most often hold -- that it needs to be imbibed daily or else. Perhaps my inner circus decided to open another ring.

But this is consistent with what I had been told by both my nutritionist and endocrinologist.

Off to the store and a good day to all.

  29. RR,

Crohn's affects people from every walk of life. It attacks athletes, factory workers, sedentary people, anybody. The worst curse is when it attacks youngsters. It's especially difficult for adolescents.

I hope your husband's friend has found a good GI doc who will be there for him when things flare. A supportive family doc is also essential.

For those who are comfortable with support groups, they are out there. The www.ccfa.org site is an excellent resource.

Consider pouring yourself a tall glass of Kool-aid, and reading or watching the news with an open mind about Obama. Just for the weekend, put away the frustrations over the DNC, the media, and Hillary's loss.

I am asking a few of my friends to do this for fun, because we AGREE on so many important issues, yet they are saying they may vote McCain.

Instead mput it in the plain English description it is. A cloture vote is a vote to quit talking and take action. If you vote against it then all you want to do is talk. That is a ststement that will even stick in the brain of the most dimwitted redneck in Mississippi.

  61. You might like to try this Italian style casserole

1 1/2 pounds greens, washed and trimmed
    salt and black pepper
1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
    1 cup half-and-half
    4 tablespoons butter
    1/4 cup flour
    1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1/2 cup ricotta cheese (whole milk or part skim)
    3 tablespoons dry bread crumbs
    2 ounces Mozzarella cheese, shredded
    Preparation:
Butter a 1 1/2-quart baking dish or casserole; preheat the oven to 375 degrees or 350 degrees for oven-proof glass.
Cut out and discard the tough stems; if using kale or collards, cut out thick center ribs. Rinse all the greens and shake off any excess water, chop them into 1/2-inch pieces. In a large skillet, cook the greens over low heat, adding them by handfuls and stirring them down as they wilt. Add 1/2 cup of water if the greens seem dry, then cover the skillet and braise for 10 to 15 minutes, or until tender. Pour off any liquid left in the skillet, then season the greens with salt and pepper. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.

Heat the broth and half-and-half in a saucepan, just until bubbles form around the edge of the pan.

In the large skillet, melt the butter over low heat. Add the flour and cook, stirring, for one minute. Add the hot broth mixture all at once and stir over medium heat until the sauce is smooth and thickened. Whisk in the grated Parmesan and ricotta. Stir the greens into the cheese sauce and pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with the bread crumbs and then sprinkle the grated mozzarella over the top; bake for 20 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling and the mozzarella is melted and lightly browned. Serve immediately.
    Serves 6.

Yes, but I use a square casserole so that there is only a little left over for second day. I wouldn't push it beyond that. The same sauce works well with spinach or as an additional step, sauteed eggplant, mushrooms as a kind of white sauce, vegetable lasagne without the noodles.

It's one of those play around with it recipes.

    "Comfort Capsules"

You really cannot make this crap up:

The Air Force's top leadership sought for three years to spend counterterrorism funds on "comfort capsules" to be installed on military planes that ferry senior officers and civilian leaders around the world, with at least four top generals involved in design details such as the color of the capsules' carpet and leather chairs, according to internal e-mails and budget documents...

In all, for the past three years the service has asked to divert $16.2 million to the effort from what the military calls the GWOT, or global war on terrorism. Congress has twice told the service that it cannot, including an August 2007 letter from Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.) to the Pentagon ordering that the money be spent on a "higher priority" need.

Meanwhile, as noted by Hecate in comments:

Shoddy electrical work by private contractors on United States military bases in Iraq is widespread and dangerous, causing more deaths and injuries from fires and shocks than the Pentagon has acknowledged, according to internal Army documents.

  98. Hey,

I don't know if you all saw this but this one is for GORDO...

I've heard that Barack Obama doesn't qualify as a natural-born U.S. citizen — and can't serve as president — because his one parent who was a citizen (his mother) hadn't lived in the U.S. for five years past her 16th birthday when Obama was born. Is this true?

    Arnold Cate

    North Carolina

    ___

This is one of the many myths about Obama that have been circulating on the Internet, and it's entirely untrue.

You do indeed need to be a natural-born citizen to serve as president — and Obama, who was born in Hawaii, qualifies. The age and citizenship status of Obama's parents have nothing to do with his citizenship status; under the law, he's a natural-born citizen because he was born in the United States.

Some bloggers have raised similar questions about whether Sen. John McCain is eligible to run, since he was born in the Panama Canal Zone. He too is considered a natural-born citizen, since he was born on an U.S. military base in a place that was, at the time, a U.S. territory.

Just to put any concerns to rest, the Senate passed a resolution declaring that McCain is a natural-born citizen. The resolution — submitted to the Senate by Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, among others — passed by unanimous consent in April.

About the recipe... It is close to what I do. Let me review it and I will tell you what I do different.

In the states I would buy an Orange cake mix... but in Europe they don't have those. I would say I use 1/2 cup vodka and 1/2 cup galliano liquer and only 1/2 c orange juice. It is pretty darn close to what I do though, amazingly. I don't measure anything though.

The glaze is all wrong though... you have to use powdered sugar which is moistened by more vodka and galliano. Then you must use a meat fork to put holes into the cake and let the alcohol-laden glaze seep in... It's kick ass, totally. I mean cooking alcohol sort of diminishes the alcohol... Pure alcohol poured into the cake after it is baked makes it not only taste, a a good buzz too.

too bad I can't eat it anymore...

  111. The problem in Belgium is that the rich north has to keep paying for the poor south. The Flemish are a people of Germanic descent which the Walloons, aka the French speakers ... are of Latin descent. They are totally different sorts of people. Belgium was created as an accident of history, and besides the fact the two regions were joined together without any cultural commonalities has been a problem all along. For a long time the elites of Walloon controlled the government. All documents had to be in French and the Flemish, who could not read or speak French, were disadvantaged. Since the growth of Flanders, the Flemish have become more assertive and now are demanding that their interests are protected.

The big battle now is splitting the voting bloc of Brussels, Halle and Vilvoorde. Although all 3 cities are in Flanders, Brussels has changed to a population that is 85% French speaking and they are able to vote for French politicians whom the Flemish despise and see as contrary to their own autonomy. They are demanding that there be a splitting of this voting bloc so that the Flemish region is better protected. Of course now the Walloons want to claim Brussels because it is 85% French speaking and it is home to the European Union. It's all a mess...

Here is an excellent analysis: http://www.globalinsight.com/SDA/SDADetail13312.htm

It should also be said that for a country the size of Maryland, there is a national parliment, a flemish parliment, a wallonia parliment and a Brussels constituency parliment... all with overpaid Ministers and bureaucrats.

  115. Even If a city services line runs past your house, if you don't have gas service to your house, here in kansas city it is $500 to get a hookup service installed. Converting your old oil or coal furnace is for the era of cheap energy and will probably cost at least half the price of a new furnace. So add $1200 to install a new furnace.

choice, do I stay the same and struggle throughhoping that oil prices will go down to a managable level or do I bight the bullet and switch , hoping that all the people switching don't drive natural gas prices skyhigh.

There are also small wind turbines now. The City of SF has invested in the design and they supply enough to serve a household. Not as big and noisy as the windmills.
"At a tour of the home last Friday, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced that he was forming a Residential Wind Power Working Group under Director of Climate Protection Initiatives, Wade Crowfoot. The goal of the group is to change San Francisco’s building codes so that businesses and residents can install wind turbines without having to go through the lengthy, painstaking process that Robin did."

  129. New Yorker Cover Cartoon NOT a Satire?

"It is being reported today that Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times has in his possession a tape recording of an interview he once had with Barack Obama that may be very damaging to the latter’s campaign for the presidency.

The tape (and the transcript of it) stem from a February 27, 2007 visit Kristof paid to Obama’s senate offices. A column Kristof wrote based upon this interview appeared in the New York Times on March 6, 2007.

What may be damning about the interview, the transcript of it and—especially—the original tape recording is that Obama allegedly provided Kristof with a recitation from memory of the Muslim call to prayer in Arabic. One of Obama’s cousins in Africa has stated in the recent past that Obama was, indeed, once a Muslim.

Obama lived in Indonesia until he was about ten years old. He attended a Catholic school there but was allegedly enrolled as a student of the Muslim faith.

The issue is not whether Obama was ever a Muslim. What Kristof may, however, have raised as an issue once again—and, this time, in spades—is Obama’s inability and/or unwillingness to tell us the truth about his past in Southeast Asia, Chicago or anywhere else."

  145. I live on top of a very large natural gas reserve. It is called the Barnett Shale. I have a gas water heater and a gas furnace in my house. The A/C and oven and range are both electric. We here in Texas have been using natural gas for decades.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnett_Shale

T Boone’s wind farm has the largest output of wind power in North America. At 4,000 megawatts, this is the equivalent combined output of four large coal-fire plants and the production of the completed Pampa, Texas, facility then will double the wind energy output of the United States.

We have city vehicles and buses running on natural gas. We have the technology now to convert. It won't completely solve the fact that we get 70% of our oil from over seas and it costs about $700 Billion a year. Wind power can take over some of the processes we now use oil for and natural gas can add to that. There aren't gonna be any wind powered grills or solar powered riding lawnmowers.

I think it will help us use the resources we have to buy in a wiser way.

  149. Born in the USA?

"... it’s quite possible that Obama was born outside the US and was issued a “late registration” Birth Certificate (BC) by the State of Hawaii. Hawaii makes it fairly easy to get one.

... set of facts have emerged, which we hope to explore in more depth, suggesting that Obama was born in Canada. One of those facts is the presence of Obama, with his mother Stanley Ann Dunham, in Mercer Island shortly after his birth. The circumstances of that visit indicate that Ann and the newborn Barack could have been in Canada ...

The possibility that Obama was born in Canada is fueled by Obama’s refusal to show a hard-copy of his original BC that would name the hospital.

The original BC shows substantially more information than the COLB shows. The original includes the name of the hospital, parents’ signatures and occupations, addresses, and so forth."

  150. Political Printing's Big Carbon Footprint?

Both presidential campaigns are touting their efforts to “green” their upcoming conventions, but neither is addressing the carbon footprint of their political advertising, which includes a significant amount of print, reports the Institute for Sustainable Communications.

TNS Media Intelligence/Campaign Analysis Group says the McCain and Obama campaigns are already spending between $250,000 to $300,000 per day on advertising. However, their campaign’s Websites fail to indicate how their ad spending is offset with carbon credits or handled in an environmentally responsible way.

“While spending hundreds of thousands of dollars a day, each campaign has the opportunity to determine the carbon footprint of their advertising and set an example on the issue of climate change,” says Don Carli, senior research fellow at the institute and GAM's sustainability editor.

  151. Jack, you're exactly right.

You're in competition with every other landlord. Unless you can come-up with some way of marketing the energy efficiency advantage of your rental as being more of an advantage than the lower cost rental down the street, than it is an economic absurdity to unilaterally make any improvements.

And, that's exactly the reason why apartment owners won't install sprinklers in their apartments, and why convenience stores won't have two people on every shift unless forced to by government.

Government has mandated 'disposal' fees on all types of items like tires and batteries. Have those fees in fact resulted in a higher ecological standard?

I'm a liberal. But, that stops when someone else has their hand in my pocket trying to grab my billfold.

And it's not my decision how the products are distributed. I understand some "ethanol" is going to be added to the gas, but I don't care... I drive as little as possible, and I give each customer a folder of tips on how to conserve gasoline...

    Do I pass?

  165. Riding your bike to work is great. Good for the environment and good for you too. I imagine with the retail cost of gas, people are happy to get the tips.

My house is a big leaking sieve. It was a summer house that has been added on to over the years. We don't have natural gas lines and have to use the unregulated propane industry. At first, propane was cheaper but now I'm thinking about switching out my remaining gas appliances for electric. The first thing will be an on demand water heater.

  166. ps I live in a faux rural area - it seems like everything is 40 minutes away. A big change here has been a lot more car pooling and waiting to all your errands at one time. Public transportation is available but not very time efficient. If I want to go to Santa Rosa about 20 miles -- it would take two hours if I time it just right.

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker Author Profile Page | July 18, 2008 4:23 PM

  167. My apartment sucks. The windows are single pane and the frames are old aluminum which causes mold and mildew to come in... I try to keep the heat down in the winter and shut the door to my office so it isn't heated.

I don't ride the bike though if the weather is bad, as it has been the last 2 weeks... almost autumn like weather. yuck

I was thinking about Flatus' question in a larger context. I don't think I sell much of anything that is "healthy" Lots of booze, beer sugar snacks, candies, salty snacks and CIGARETTES... I sell it because I have to... And believe me, people are consuming less gasoline here... the price is oppressive !!!

Posted by: EuroTom Author Profile Page | July 18, 2008 4:24 PM

  168. KGC... I think the car pooling idea is GREAT! I often have to use my peugeot to pick up goods for the shop.. It has good "gas mileage" but it is diesel. It does not have back seats... it is only for professional reasons... but it drives well.

If I had a car with back seats too, I would try to organize communal trips to the store and such. We need energy but we also need to be smarter about using it. It ISN'T EASY! I stopped using my clothes dryer as much as possible.. and I even heat water in my elec. water cooker in the morning if I do a sponge bath because I have to waste a lot of water to get the warm water up and running.. As I type this I am thinking maybe I can have a bucket under the faucet to collect the water to use for plants or rinsing dishes or cleaning...

    Other conservation tips anyone?

There's very little you can do at a gas station to change what food products people want to buy. I don't think arugula salads will fly.

On helpig the poor. all I see is just help with the payment of the bill. Section 8 housing vouchers inspect a house for livability but the don't have energy usage requirement on appliances or insulation in the house.

    Dooty
All of the different forms of alternative energy are coming more into the realm of possibility. Different places and houses will use differnt things. Right now I wouldn't know how to find out what is more effecient in my area. It may be research needs to be done and information spread.

    Flatus
How far I should go to insulate and improve energy effeciency is a source of many family discussions when I buy an old house. I'm for stripping them to the studs and doing a total rehab. I think I can then be more picky with my renters and they will stay longer.

"Judah Benjamin, who has been doing extensive research, sent me a comment:

Two points. Under Article 97 of the Constitution of Kenya, or under The British Nationality Act 1948, it wouldn’t matter a damn WHERE Obama was born, British Crown Jurisdiction or not. It would sure as hell make a BIG difference in US Law!! Under US Law as it stood in 1961 he would not have had US Citizenship at all and could not have claimed it until November 1986. That would place him in the Naturalized Bracket.

NOTE: The question of whether Obama was born outside the US (such as Canada) is a separate (but related) issue from the question of dual citizenship — another major problem for him. "

    http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A48519

Throughout the endless Democratic presidential primary, Barack Obama used Hillary Clinton's U.S. Senate vote in favor of the Iraq war against her, time and time again.

I thought it an unwise political move for Obama because, as much as his campaign invokes the "change" mantra, he is an old-school Chicago pol and had he been in the Senate at the time, I am certain he would have followed Clinton in the "aye" column.

You can imagine the boatloads of crap I have received from fellow Democrats for this opinion. One person had the gall to tell me that unacknowledged racism was the basis for my "opinion" (her air quotes). Of course, she supports school vouchers, so I didn't sweat her "accusation" (my air quotes).

  191. Obama, heading into next month's convention, doesn't want to look weak on national security to Middle America and is following an established strategy of moving to the center.

His characterization of the law as "improved but imperfect" is not only disingenuous, but also a blithe relegation of Fourth Amendment protections to the dustbin of history.

It's more than a little ironic given that Obama received the Kennedy imprimatur, yet returned the favor with a McCain-style "yea."

Hillary Clinton never disavowed her Iraq war vote and maybe that cost her the nomination.

Last Wednesday, she voted "no" on the new FISA.

  192. I knew what you meant, Champ, and I agree whole-heartedly. I do think he wants to appear presidential and to get some foreign policy experience, since he's been slammed for having none.

I'm just also disturbed by both of them going overseas so much - I don't want the rest of the world to be courted. What we need to do to get the world back on our side is act responsibly, but that should happen after the election to some degree. Just getting rid of W is going to make the world cheer.

I just think HERE is a dangerous place for any politician because they could so easily mis-speak or make a mistake in judgement. We've got so many problems here I wish they would stay here and show us what they're made of - that's probably what they're afraid of. They don't know for sure what they're made of.

Someone has to make the first move, to create a position so the other one can be a contrast. It looks as if McCain made the first move with his ad.

I do agree that he has no standing to be conducting foreign policy, and that McCain doesn't either.

UB - I hadn't noticed anybody insulting you, that's why I noticed the change. However, I'm the first to admit that a lot of stuff like that goes over my head. I for one haven't thought less of you for going for Obama - what other people believe is up to them. I have enough trouble running my own life - want no responsiblity for anyone else's!

We are really kindred spirits on this one. I really think doing this is both petty and cowardly. The consistent silly names are fine. You know the person behind the name and how they think and feel. These drive by single shots are the tools of a chicken shit unwilling to take responsibility for their words.

  262. UB, this is in regards to your earlier post about someone taking you to task, also Bethy's thinking you have changed.

Here's my take on all that. You are much like Pokey from The Group. She kind of bopped along through life, sometimes paying attention and sometimes not. That's how you are on the message board -- and I don't blame you. Sometimes it's easy just to skim through things. BUT, then some of your comments seem like they are coming from Mars, while others are spot on. So people aren't always sure what you are talking about...:)

  263. If Hillary wants the VP, I would support her in that, but don't you think that has already been decided?

    Posted by: unlikely_burrito Author Profile Page | July 18, 2008 9:19 PM

  264. Yeah, boop, quite frankly I don't give a damn about the rest of the world's opinions on our government. My contention with the Bush administration and both congresses under his tenure is that they have driven our economy, our military, and our civil liberties into the ground.

There's something to be said for reputation, but I don't believe it should be a primary motivator. Do what's best for Americans, and let others think what they will. As it is now, It looks like the majority of Americans are ready to toss our sovereignty away for the sake of some whiny Europeans.

I remember someone quoted a European saying "We want America back". Well, tough cookies, it's our country, not theirs.

    Posted by: champ | July 18, 2008 9:20 PM

  265. ET,

This is your message from 3:37 PM:

"Look, people need to start thinking about the sustainability of our planet. We Americans have acted like buying gas at prices that keep us smiling and traveling is a GOD GIVEN RIGHT! We are overusing the world's resources and it's time to think not only for our individual interests, but our collective ones as well.

Think people! WE have only 1 planet. We can all do little bits to make improvements."

Tom, I certainly wasn't criticizing you for the choice of work you're doing; I don't do that type of thing.

But I did sense, in your above comment, that you were being overly judgmental of us. We, collectively, are victims of our circumstance and environment just as you describe with your own situation in your later comments.

I was trying to have you recognize the absolute futility of any effort on your part to make a meaningful change in reducing consumption in the fuel side of your business. For example, if you convened a meeting of all your fellow service station operators in your region and proposed restricting fuel sales hours to 0700 to 1900 daily with no sales on Sundays, what do you think the reaction of your suppliers would be? Do you think they would be pleased at your effort to significantly reduce fuel consumption?

All of us are trying to reduce our energy consumption just to reduce the cash flow out of our pockets. That's a greater motivator than saving the whales (for most people).

But we all have to understand, freezing our butts off in winter or melting in the summer heat is not conservation.

Tom, I wasn't trying to offend you; I apologize for having done so.

All of that is well and good. WE have been fortunate to have men such s that in office. I just don't like the sense that he is a shade too in love with his own publicity image.

He has all the requirements to be great at the job unless he gets lost in the publicity and forgets the practicalities. His experience is limited. That means he is going to have to rely on others to fill in the blanks as he grows into the position. Who he chooses to fill in those blanks are going to be the measurement of his success or failure.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | July 18, 2008 9:22 PM

  267. There are plenty of viable alternatives, Jamie. The GOP, Dems, and the media would just like you to believe otherwise. If we want our democracy back (if that's even possible), people need to stop believing the aforementioned. We're getting hustled.

  272. The Audacity of Vanity

"Obama is a three-year senator without a single important legislative achievement to his name, a former Illinois state senator who voted "present" nearly 130 times. As president of the Harvard Law Review, as law professor and as legislator, has he ever produced a single notable piece of scholarship? Written a single memorable article? His most memorable work is a biography of his favorite subject: himself.

It is a subject upon which he can dilate effortlessly. As Hudson Institute economist Irwin Stelzer noted in his London Daily Telegraph column, "Moses made the waters recede, but he had help." Obama apparently works alone.

After all, in the words of his own slogan, "we are the ones we've been waiting for," which, translating the royal "we," means: " I am the one we've been waiting for."

  277. Obama's vote on FISA shows he lies.

There's no doubt that Barack Obama reversed his earlier position on FISA "reform" legislation when he voted for that scandalous bill. It's equally clear I think (that the sellout was a political calculation, a tactical retreat, rather than a rethinking of the rule of law or the meaning of the Fourth Amendment. As kos has remarked, it was a tactical blunder. His FISA reversal was a major leap forward in the Obama campaign's rush this summer to undermine his image as a principled leader with the courage of his own convictions. It's a sickening spectacle of self-inflicted damage. dkos

Little grrl lost , by Charles Delint
    the master of Urban fantasy

    Up next
    Safe and Sound, JD Rhoades
A great writr of action crime novels called Redneck noir
All of his books so far have had such believable character that I said to my self I know those folks, I just didn't realise they had made it to North Carolina where they are set.

    and

If you read his statement really really carefully, you will note that he is against the "intentional" destruction of embryos for research purposes. Weasel words, of course. He has said in statements and speeches that if frozen embryos are going to be discarded anyway ... etc, etc. It is essentially the same position as Gordon Smith, Orrin Hatch and one or two other presumably pro-life Republicans.
So, he hasn't changed his position -- he's just emphasizing it differently. BTW, I don't think any Democrat supports fetal farming, cloning, etc either ... at least I'd be surprised to find that any of them did.

Tony began in tin pan alley's Brill Building world, went through the teen idol days and on into big time publishing before accidentally becoming a pop star as Orlando and Dawn...then to a TV show.

As you can tell I'm a political buff so part of my library (and it took one trip of the pickup truck to move it last time, and it is bigger) is various political books and good biographies. My history books are mostly left over from college but I have many of those over many subjects.
I have always loved science from a laymans point of view. in the late 80's I found I was getting out of touch so I subscribed to Scientific American, Then joined the scientific book club. I have many science books some for the layman some for the professional I enjoy struggling through those and trying to understand their math.

My collecting bug is science fiction. If I've read it it is down stairs on the shelf. The biggest bulk of my books are those.

  498. Mercy mercy me - What HAVE you been up to while I was out celebrating a very neat 90-year old woman's birthday.

Why did everybody get so angry all of a sudden?????
I couldn't find the spot. Can't anybody swallow his or her anger? It's like a lioness hiding in bushes for any critter to go strolling by, and POUNCE! Thank god I found something I can take as an insult and now I can throw one back.

There are times I want to type, "Oh, just grow up." I just don't because then I know I will have no more good conversation with that person. I'm not a goddy two-shoes tho I guess I come across that way.

I am here because I like you people and don't want to fight or yell. I don't enjoy political arguments because they say NOTHING - nada - nil - rien. If you look back at some of the things you post, I'll bet you laugh at your words.

So when you get screaming at each other, I and some others miss out on what you can contribute. I kinda think it starts up when you get bored cuz there's nothing new to discuss.

I don't understand why the people who like to post on the back channel even want to post here. Anybody who doesn't like it here but comes back anyway and starts complaining about it here begs the question : are you thinking you will change it here? Don't get me wrong as it's fine with me if you post here too, but why put yourself thru such misery?

Then again, maybe it's a very familiar routine that everyone is so used to that it feels good.

"I think and hope that over time Obama win be able to show you who he really is and that it turns out to be someone good hearted, seriously involved and sincere in his efforts. "

UB - I hope so too since he will likely be our next pres. I am not counting on it, tho I am voting for him. I'm glad you said it that way - just perfect.

Offended - if fear of "reprisal" keeps you from showing a real identity, a constant one, why do you post at all? All the nasty stuff still gets thrown your way.

I have to say that I've been posting here for a while now and I've never been slammed. Or have I? Did one of you throw a stone I missed? Oh, well.

In case it is true that I haven't been insulted, I'd say it's probably because I've never slammed anybody else.
I've disagreed plenty and even sworn (oh, my), and did my best to not be accusing or belittling or taunting. Maybe this post will be different and I'll get some shots thrown at me now.

But Offended and all the other no-names wonders who showed up tonight, I disagree entirely with the statement "I've never heard such childish conversation before" or something to that effect. You obviously have heard worse before and maybe even taken part in it.

I've always wondered what kind of person enjoys spreading viruses and other ills into computers, if not a political enemy. The drive-bys and/or trolls who were her in this tonight have given me some insight. How useless and tiresome and boring.

Champ - I figure that one day there will be a one world government, but not for a long time. As I've said before, things that grow too fast quite often turn out to be not so good--cancer and weeds, for instance. The people of the world don't know each other well-enough yet to live together under the same roof - visit maybe.

I can't find the post but someone said they like Obama meeting the rest of the world. I understand what you say, but it shouldn't be done until after an inauguration. He has no imprimatur - he's still just a senator.

Well, this is certainly the longest post I've done I think.
I am most dreadfully sorry but firgure you will have given up by now. I also figure everyone else has crashed and burned and won't even read this. Now that makes me mad. If you don't read this, I'll re-post if tomorrow! ROFLMFAO

Tom, I certainly wasn't criticizing you for the choice of work you're doing; I don't do that type of thing.

But I did sense, in your above comment, that you were being overly judgmental of us. We, collectively, are victims of our circumstance and environment just as you describe with your own situation in your later comments.

    ~snip~

I don't question your reaction because it's how you felt. I am judgmental about this issue ! And I am judgmental because I am AMERICAN and know how resistant our country has been toward significant and sustainable energy conservation. We bitch and moan about the price of gasoline, not even taking into consideration that we are 111th most expensive out of 156 nations. And the big 3 automakers have resisted any attempts to build more fuel efficient cars which would help greatly. And when the Dems wanted a new energy efficient policy, Dingell did his part to try to stop any mandates on the auto makers.

America is based on the concept of individualism. We tend to think of our own individualistic needs over collective ones. That is certainly part of human nature, but having grown up and lived most of my life in the USA and now 10 years in Europe, there is a startling difference. VERY generally speaking, Europeans tend to think more collectively... whether energy policy, sustainability, facing global warming... etc. etc.

the 70s were known as the "me generation" and certainly the economic and political policies ushered in during the Reagan years only further solidified the notion of "I got mine and to hell with the rest of you"... As long as we can drive our big gas guzzling autos and still buy lettuce at prices that keep us smiling, we're ok.

And frankly, this motley crew of bloggers are some of the more enlightened when it comes to these issues. With the larger population not giving a damn or oblivious to the source problems facing our country and planet, it is no wonder that nothing really changes.

    Off my soap box...

I read this message further ... and I had to laugh further. WHINEY EUROPEANS? Champ your Reagan revultinglation is showing. This has been the problem in America. We do what we want and the rest of the world be damned. But it's not that simple. Americans cannot assume they can continue to create the most greenhouse gasses and ignore the fact that they are endangering the sustainability of our planet. If the effects of carbon emissions and so forth would stay only within the borders of the USA you might have a point. But the effects don't stop there. And frankly, the USA's "superpower" status is diminishing. I realize the right wing doesn't want to believe that, but it is happening. America fought the "evil empire" and did a great job during the two world wars. If it continues to presume the right to be world dictators then they are simply recreating the very evil of empire that they were fighting against.

I'd rather be smashing imperialism !!!
