Obama's Summer Landslide

| | Comments (567)

obama_victory.jpgThere seems to be no question that if the presidential election were held today, Democrat Barack Obama would win the Electoral College in a landslide. We're talking 300-plus votes, well beyond the 270 needed to win the White House.

Republican John McCain could not be in a worse position. His only hope is that the election is four months away and something could change.

To remain viable, McCain must convince the purveyors of conventional wisdom that the underdog.jpgopinion polls are somehow wrong. Perhaps the methodologies of surveys in battleground states are horribly mistaken - it wouldn't be the first time - but making such a case seems remarkably dicey at this juncture.

If there is danger for Obama in this situation, it is that his apparent invincibility comes so soon that by Election Day he will seem to be the incumbent -- a candidate so presumed to win that he actually comes across as having already won. Which makes McCain the true challenger and underdog.

And America loves an underdog.

  6. From last thread...
"U.S. and Israel are the real nuclear danger. The Pentagon has a huge, nuclear-capable naval armada in the Persian/Arabian Gulf, with guns aimed at Iran. Israel, the Pentagon’s proxy force in the Middle East, has up to 200 nuclear warheads and has never signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Iran did sign it."
    Quote from Workers World Newspaper

The "nuclear program " that the US is threatening to use as a reason to war against Iraq is bogus. Even the top 16 top US spy agencies agree that Iran has no nuclear weapons technology!
The I.A.E.C., which inspects Iran nuclear programs, says Iran has no technlogy except to power the country when oil eventually runs out.

I do view Israeli harshly when they stand with Bush and threaten to bomb Tehran.
Being anti-Zionist is in no way being anti-Semitic, either. Believe me, I used to know many New York City Jews who were committed to aiding the Palestinian cause.
Of course, if you are a Zionist, you will have a totally different viewpoint. This is why we need negotiations at every level to ensure quality of life in the Mideast.

  8. Here I am to _________* again. My electric bill is $70 more than it was this month last year, and I only used 935 kWh, same as last year. The rate automatically went from .125 to .189 with no notice & 2 weeks to pay it without a penalty. Glad I knew that my year long rate contract was up I locked in a rate this month. Next month it'll be .159 kWh. Oh, what a relief, she said sarcastically.

I'm not a family of 4 in a house. One can only guess what folks using 3,000or 5,000 kWh are gonna pay this month in TX. Actually we could compute it. WOW! 3,000 kWh = about $560 semolians and 5,000 kWh = about $900 clams. Car gas is $4.00/gal. Ohhh, I'd say that this is a RECESSION.

I hope the political folks see this as I am one of the little, We the People.

  9. I am pretty sure BO will win come November.
Not only is McC visibly shaken, he is , to say the least, really odd these days if you look at him...Too frail and very robotic. I am amazed journalists don´t start asking him the question about his current health...

That said, BO should be a shoe in for November.... Michelle should actually shut up and BO should stick to his transcripts.

Not that I agree though....But what the heck. The man ran the campaign of the decade, out hussling the inevitable, and making the best alliance with the media.... It has to be said...he did what he had to do to become the nominee and the eventual president.

One thing remaining up in the air: The repubs amunition in September/October. I still think they will not be able to stop BO. I also think that they will sacrifice JmC (he will lose, letting this very dubious election go by), try to take over the congress and then come up with political savvy Mitt Romney in 4 years to take over BO.
That is why I am now actually thinking of not just not going to vote, but going and doing a write in of HRC. My dad is this close in convincing me to do that...

Anyone who thinks that McCain would be the Republikan nominee if they really believed they had a shot at winning this time around is delusional. They gave prince Obot the easiest trip they could find, hoping that his arrogance would pave the way for them in 4 years. The Republikans are nothing, if not PATIENT.

When and if he does win, however, he will not be my president - I suffered through 8 years of Bush not being my president, I can do another 4, PUMA.

The DNC's 'Terry McAuliffe mind-set' ruined the campaigns of Gore, Kerry and Senator Clinton and now the legions of McAuliffites who have surrounded Barack Obama are doing their damndest to undermine the possibility of his Presidency. They've turned this man we thought was a lion into a little lamb and they're leading him to slaughter. There's a well sourced rumor of Machiavellian proportions running around that what's going to happen is that his base support will be so demoralized they won't have the vital conviction they'll need this August to withstand a McAuliffite push to persuade disenchanted delegates on the floor of the convention to make a resurgent Hillary Clinton the Party's nominee! Obama's the 'presumptive' nominee, remember. The operative word is 'presumptive'. The tortoise is still running. If you're someone close to Barack Obama print out a bunch of copies of this New York Times Op-Ed piece and paste it on his fridge, on the door of his plane, on his kids' foreheads! 34. Bob Herbert has supported Senator Obama in a darn thorough way.

His NYT column this morning's entitled "Obama Lurches".

Here's a paragraph which purports something that hasn't turned up too much in the media.

"There has been a reluctance among blacks to openly criticize Senator Obama, the first black candidate with a real shot at the presidency. But behind the scenes, there is discontent among African-Americans, as well, over Mr. Obama’s move away from progressive issues, including his support of the Supreme Court’s decision affirming the constitutional right of individuals to bear arms."

Discontent with Obama gets disposed of here blithely by some. His shifts get greeted and sometimes celebrated by some as sheer political brilliance.

If that's brilliance to 'em, they should mail their checks ASAP not to Obama but to the DLC -- and just predate them to July of 1990.

The last four or so paragraphs of the article are written well enough. But the content is already stale.

But the peroration says a lot.

  42. Good Morning!

Prof Marcia -- Check out this website: http://www.together4us.com/index.html

I haven't yet made a transformation to the Obamanation. I can say that for me it will be a choice of two lessers. Most likely I will be writing in Hillary's name. I live in a county where I'm very sure that Obama will lose. (It has decades of uniformly poor Democratic performance.) That frees me to vote a write-in without jeopardizing the outcome. Plus, I will help the DEM performance numbers go up because I will proudly vote straight DEM the rest of the ticket. Mark Warner for US Senate, Yea!

Too bad that our House candidate dropped out of the race. He had some financial problems in his past, but he's been very open about the reasons for filing bankruptcy many years ago. He was a country doctor who gave free medical services to many people, and ended up sacrificing his own financial stability. That wasn't enough for some local DEM party bosses who most likely pressured him to drop out.

Goodness sakes! GOP candidates don't have such scrutiny. This is a county that elected a convicted drug king pin and burglar to local office! For *that* story read on:

The guy is a GOP and all he had to do was visit every church in the area and provide witness to the redemptive powers of Jeebus by offering his testimony as a lamb of God who fell into Satan's eeevil path, but saw the light! And oh btw, here's a little donation to your pastor's project fund. So that, along with the best defense his ill-gotten gains could buy, he got the lightest possible sentence, kept his drug money out of asset seizure, and started attending local GOP meetings as soon as he was sprung from jail. His request for voting rights were refused by Gov. Gilmore, but when the GOP-Senator brother of our Commonwealth's Attorney was in trouble politically, the crook's money helped pull him out of the fire. The GOP Senator was in trouble because he was cooperating with then-Gov. Warner to solve the budget crisis left by Gov. Gilmore. GOP Senator puts the word into Gov. Warner, who as a DEM is also in favor of restoration of voting rights to convicted felons who have paid their price to society. Not knowing that this guy is a recidivist and scofflaw, Gov. Warner signed the paper in 2003. In 2005 Mr. Former Drug King Pin becomes County Supervisor, after spending $98,000 -- a precedent for this county of 120,000 people. Supposedly it was his own money, but there are rumors that he had help from the developers who are quite skilled at hiding the source of political money.

  48. mornin' all.

As a reluctant prospective Obama voter (the default position for an anti-McOldFart vote) I completely understand the reluctance of thos eof you who do not see yourself voting for Obama. I'm a two issue voter in this election, and wouldn't put the further conduct of the waronterra or appointments to the judiciary in the hands of Johnwhowasaprisonerofwarandarealhero. My concerns about Obama are two - the first is that he has not been able to capitalize on his presumptive nominee status and swing popular opinion in his direction - accordingly he is mired in a virtual tie with McOF per Gallup and has a 5% edge in most polls, which is where he's been for about 6 weeks now. The second concern is that he is not looking presidential in any of his video clips or the conduct of the campaign, and is in fact looking weak, tired and halting in his comments to reporters and in his virtual rejection of McPOW's town hall meeting debate format challenges. On the one hand, he's using the (worn out) "If John McCain wants to have a discussion on _______, that's a debate I look forward to having." Heard it, seen it, and it doesn't work if you're rejecting having the debates. Afraid of the format? That's what it looks like. Forget trying to win over disaffected Republikans - If he wants to win over the nervous middle and reluctant lifetime Dems, he has to engage McNN.

Sturg & 9/11, good to see you around. Don't be strangers.

Whoa! Alicia -- the Dems screwed up with the doctor....I'd think if he ran his campaign strictly on that issue -- that he went broke offering medical care -- he'd have won in a landslide! God, our party can be small minded.

And I understand your point about electing oddities....when I first moved to TN, we reelected a guy from his jail cell. He was in for cheating on his taxes, and a LOT of Tennesseans considered that a plus!

"Anyone who's sat in on a national campaign's daily message meeting, which sets and meticulously choreographs the candidate's travels and messages up to two to three weeks out, will recognize the difference between one that's a chorus of possibly good ideas and one that has a presiding officer who listens and then decisively drives a single theme.

That's because, amazingly, until Sunday the Republican presidential nominee's national team did not employ either a political director or a field director."

  60. Obama supporters are not Democrats but embarassed Republicans hoping Obama can save them from their own mistakes. They have no respect for the Democratic Party or its long held principles.

The most ardent Obama supporters are "former" Republicans who voted for Bush.

  61. Patsi -- The NYT this weekend had an interesting article about DNC's organizing the DEM convention.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/06/us/politics/06convention.html?pagewanted=1&sq=convention&st=nyt&adxnnl=1&scp=1&adxnnlx=1215443043-dd0MvJYQeaM13SyzBUeYlA

"With the Denver convention less than two months away, problems range from the serious — upwardly spiraling costs on key contracts still being negotiated — to the mundane, like the reluctance of local caterers to participate because of stringent rules on what delegates will be eating, down to the color of the food.

A 28-page contract requested by Denver organizers that caterers provide food in “at least three of the following five colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple and white.” Garnishes could not be counted toward the colors. No fried foods would be allowed. Organic and locally grown foods were mandated, and each plate had to be 50 percent fruits and vegetables. As a result, caterers are shying away."

McCain is an odd duck. It's hard to imagine his campaign was still fying by the seat of his pants (or close to that region.)

I don't understand Republican thinking but if it were me I would be running as far away from Bush as possible and he seems to be embracing Shrub instead.

  65. chloe, thanks. I'm nothing if not pragmatic when it comes to politics. And sometimes I think I do make sense, and sometimes I don't make sense even to myself.

I don't take Sutherland (one of those very good actors whose only Oscar will likely be a lifetime achievement award - and richly earned, I might add - Klute, Don't look Now and M*A*S*H should be enough to earn him that) as blaming McAuliffe as much as I see him blaming the DNC for using the same tactics with Obama that McAuliffe stole from Nixon, and which worked for Bill Clinton then failed in the following 3 presidential runs he was involved in.

I think that McCain ran his campaign on so little cash for so long, that everything about it was unconventional. (Including his being more centrist than his party).

Now, it seems like he's bringing in the big boys. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

  68. Patsi -- The CD-1 in VA is so ignored by the DCCC as a GOP stronghold the only way a DEM could win is if they were independently wealthy and willing to self-fund their own campaign, Oh wait, we had a DEM candidate who was willing to do that -- but the DCCC discouraged him from running, saying that even a mostly self-funded campaign would draw resources away from other races that DCCC deems more important. We also had a great candidate in 2000 -- an African American preacher who was the five-time elected mayor of Fredericksburg, a civil rights leader, and savvy businessman who directed his talents to build businesses that employ the people who need a second chance. A man as honest and kind and smart as the day is long. He didn't expect any help from the DCCC, but we sure as heck didn't expect that DCCC would be telling affinity groups and potential donors that we sought out on our own to stay away. That's what they do -- if you don't meet their targeting criteria -- under the bus!

I don't think a gay couple had ever lived there before. Last week while they were away for a couple of days, someone burned down their new house. It's been proven arson, but no suspects. They are trying to keep from thinking it has anything to do with their being gay. God I hope so....that it was just random.

  70. The Denver catering contract sounds like a recipe for another salmonella outbreak. No fried foods? Cucumber sandwiches witha a little slice of tomato would satisfy the contraact, but it won't make the delegates happy. A nice crisp chardonnay might go well with that. What food is blue (other than blue corn chips - and the baked ones are retched)? Eggplant and rutabagas are purple, but what caterer has ever used a rutabaga? If I were the local restauranteurs, I'd be gearing up for an onslaught of disappointed and hungry conventioneers.

Look, I could come up with a little seed money for the ham and biscuits and BBQ trailers if someone can get the permits. Maybe we could put a beer trailer there, too, if Cindy McCain hasn't already got that market tied up. Actually, if the Italian Heritage Festival here weren't the weekend of Labor Day, I'm sure the vendors who pump out steak sandwichs, Italian hoagies, french fries, funnel cakes, frittis, anything that can be fries, beer and frozen drinks would love to get in on the action, but Denver is a long drive from here.

Naturally, I don’t want to hear anything McCain says because...I just don’t want to. Nuff said.

It is my opinion that the Repugs are doing a good job of distorting Obama’s words as flip-flop on Iraq. I thought that Rachael Maddow standing in for Keith Obermann last night did a great job of addressing their jabs about the flip-flop on Iraq by showing Obama in his own words stating exactly his same position on Iraq the other day as he said in a debate in February. She also mentioned another comment to a reporter about his position he made earlier which McCain says is a flip-flop and the media is eating it up. Besides, is McCain someone to be talking about flip-flopping?

"... Hawaii’s form COLB serves as an abstract for the original birth certificate (remember in Dreams, Obama says he found that in High School), which includes extensive details of one’s birth. The State of Hawaii maintains the original long version in its files for all registrants.

... Ann Dunham’s brief stop-over in Mercer Island with baby Barack when he was only 3 weeks old. Is it possible that she was on her way back to Hawaii?

The State of Hawaii does provide for “late registration” births."

  153. karolenna, the problem is that Obama said during the primaries that he would withdraw American troops from Iraq as fast as it could safely be done, 1 to 2 combat brigades a month was what he estimated based on his knowledge when he made the comment. I believe that he means to say that he may change the pace of withdrawal based upon the opinions of the commanders on the ground. His problem IMHO is that he has not been clear in his off the cuff explanations, so it's easy to portray him as flipping. He did say very recently that he would give the commanders a new mission - to end the war. That was clear, and he should try that kind of explanation more often. Of course McNN has changed his position on about every issue as well, so I say in resonse to Repug criticisms, BFD, criticize after your candidate stops doing what you're criticizing Obama for.

I wasn't talking about reprisals. For eight years the Republicans have thwarted every single attempt by the Democrats in Congress to accomplish anything even to the extent of filibusters and overriding of Vetos that Congress had passed in the first place.

The shoe will be on the other foot now with what I hope will be a veto proof majority no matter who is in the Presidency. We will need strong leaders in the Speaker's and Majority Leader's spots to push through corrective legislation.

Quite frankly, if the Republicans want to see another ear mark in the next 8 years, the Democratic leaders will need to be firm and absolute. Otherwise it will just be business as usual where the Democratic and Republican power structure has theirs and the country be damned.

  162. Obama’s move to the middle issue by issue
    1) FISA: telecom immunity concerns me far less than how the court works; no one has convinced me that the court will protect our privacy or our freedom of speech.
    2) Campaign Finance & FEC: Has there been a shift to the center here? I missed it. William Proxmire was a master of campaign finance and I haven’t seen any reform since. The FEC brought us mandatory digital voting and is kept, purposefully, out of the loop.
    3) Guns and religion: Remember the ‘clinging to’ remark. This is all designed to erase the damage. Presidents don’t have much control over gun issues. The Brady bill was one case. A move to the center on these issues is simply an exercise in rhetoric. My favorite advice on this subject is: “Guns don’t kill people bullets do. Tax the shit out of bullets”.
    4) Iraq: Here the question is oil (code word--stability)--and, my hawkish friends would say, keeping a military presence in this part of the world. Since we are in Eretria and Turkey the question is oil. I would rather hold Obama to his stance than McCain to his.

Sheila, The avoe is what I mean. Things happen out in the great wide world that every single tailmixer would think is reprehensible no matter whom they supported.

The folks that supported Sen. Clinton were constantly called racist even though we never said even one thing that any thinking person could construe as racist and I think it was because of things such as what Karolena posted above. We were getting blamed for those who attacked Sen. Obama because of his race when all we were attacking were his political opinions or his experience in certain areas such as foreign relations, economics, and security issues.

When I went to Evergreen, we were encouraged to be expressive, but also to own our opinions. It was a "community" and we all had a role in its development and health. We could learn from that model when we participate here.

Craig, if you are reading this, I think the days of "drive by postings" should become history. Why not require everyone to have a static nickname and email address? If we own our own thoughts and are unabashed by presenting them, what do we have to hide?

There is a bridge in Canada second to the GG in suicides and since they put up the barrier none. Most ssuicide attempts are a one time and any opportunity for a second thought is good.

Save a ton of energy and is an ideal way to move people and freight within the existing system. Also could possibly support a civilian work corp to build the project.

Right in the article is states that the proposed design will block the view of the bridge from two of the most popular public biking or driving areas.

I doubt that picking up the bodies while engaging in other coast guard duties is more expensive than the cost of retrofitting and upkeep on the bridge.

Corey, The theological view is that suicide is the ultimate sin. In fact it is so prohibited that there are still places where you cannot be buried on church grounds if you kill yourself unless there is a hearing where it is declared that it occured while being mentally unbalanced. Supposedly it insults God by denying his existence because you have given in to despair and no longer believe that there is spirtual assistance available.

Except they don't do it while engaged in other duties.
The Canadians did a study before retrofitting the Bloor Street Bridge and the cost was 800k per suicide.

My Mom's response was, "That's not true!" By the way, I do know someone who had a friend commit suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. She was pretty devestated.

My disdain for the Repugs' campaign for McCain as war hero, etc., etc., and firm belief that whether by age or just lack of a youthful enough outlook to assume the presidency (and I don't mean to osuggest that someone has to be as young as Obama to be president) doesn't alter my almost complete distrust of him to handle the nation's security and the nation's judiciary.

The sin of suicide is not that it offends God, but that everyone left behind carries the crushing guilt of feeling that something more could have or should have been done.

  214. From Bill Herbert’s NYT column:

“But behind the scenes, there is discontent among African-Americans, as well, over Mr. Obama’s move away from progressive issues, including his support of the Supreme Court’s decision affirming the constitutional right of individuals to bear arms."

Excuse me, but are these the same AAs who early on didn’t think BHO was “black enough”

Are these the same group of idiots who said Bill Cosby was being “disrespectful” to his heritage when he says young black men with baggy jeans below their asses and caps on sideways shuffling home from school are losers going nowhere. (Or words to that effect)

There are AAs out there who can’t wait to blame white America if BHO loses. They have made a career out of agitation and playing the blame game. They almost become irrelevant if Barack wins.

Fortunately (both for Barack and most AAs) these idiots do not speak for AAs who are trying to make a living, put food on the table and create better futures for their kids.

  229. With regard to the so-called Clinton strategy. Except for his first term as Governor, Bill Clinton was always a centrist. He did not have to run to the center because he was already there.
Sen Obama, on the other hand, seems to be tacking to the center in a way that resembles a Chinese fire drill.
I thought the great promise of Sen Obama was that, while he didn't have much experience, he had a new vision. I do still remember the contempt with which he characterized Hillary as Bush-Cheney lite.
At the risk of offending, may I humbly suggest that some of Sen Obama's recent statements regarding late-term abortions (not for women who are just "feeling blue"), gun control laws, government-funded faith-based programs, and so on seem farther to the right than anything Hillary ever proposed.

Turn over on the bridge board and the Suicide Prevention group are the biggest reasons. But the deciding factors were the success of the Canadian project and being able to get money from the feds for the design study.

Up thread someone linked to the movie which is of people jumping off the bridge. It was released at the height of the study discussion. It is very sensational and got a lot of media attention. A couple of the people who jumped and lived spoke out and their stoies seem to resonate.

  234. I believe repugs are using McCain as their patsy this election. He is old and will be unelectable toast. They can blame the loss on him and regroup for the next election. The power shift has already begun. This is all bigger than any of us and the result of the vacuum created by the Bush administration’s blunders and plunders.

This may be the true reason the dem fight has been so tough…the dem nominee IS going to be President. It also explains the negative slant of the dem nominating process and the feeling that Obama stole the nomination from Clinton. Again, this is bigger than any of us and Clinton supporters can stay home at election time and the Obama campaign will still succeed in garnering enough votes in the electoral college. It is not about the popular vote, but about strategic wins. In reality, the shift from the repugs will be so huge, the longtime dems support is not needed. Yep, too bad Clinton folks didn’t see this coming.

  235. maggs, Bill ran to the left in the primaries, then returned to the center from whence he had come. Not saying anything negative about the strategy - just recognizing it for what it is. As you'll recall, the dem wing of the dem party was pretty disappointed with Bill's governing from the middle. As for me, as a moderate anyway, I had no real problem with it. He always struck me as true to liberal social policies, and he was so hamstrung with the new Republican majority and the unending pursuit of him by Ken Starr, being a centriston other issues seemed like the only way he could accomplish anything.

I imagine Jesus' disciples felt the same way.

And for those who are offended, please remember, as I do when I see things here that are unpleasant to me, that you live in a great country where everyone is free to express their opinion, whether it agrees with yours or not. I have not been here that long, so I cannot judge what you mean by deteriorating. My observation is that there is a certain amount of sensitivity that seems a little over the top. I certainly agree that it is not polite to insult another participant in the blog, but shouldn't one be free to make observations about the candidates? Not every observation is a criticism and even if it were, what is there to discuss if we all agree on everything? Politics is about disagreement, different points of view, different ideas and observations.
If you find a comment insulting, by all means say so, but let us not assume that every quip or quote is meant disagreeably.

    Rita,

I'd say that was a terribly insensitive and ignorant remark.

I'd say that reasonably its based on a prejudice.

    Here is a WIKI definiton;

The word prejudice refers to prejudgment: making a decision before becoming aware of the relevant facts of a case or event. The word has commonly been used in certain restricted contexts, in the expression 'racial prejudice'. Initially this is referred to making a judgment about a person based on their race, religion, etc., before receiving information relevant to the particular issue on which a judgment was being made; it came, however, to be widely used to refer to any hostile attitude towards people based on their race or even by just judging someone without even knowing them. Subsequently the word has come to be widely so interpreted in this way in contexts other than those relating to race. The meaning now is frequently "any unreasonable attitude that is unusually resistant to rational influence".[1] Race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, and religion have a history of inciting prejudicial behavior.

No, Jamie, that is not true. I did not say it because they are Clinton supporters. Obviously, you did not listen to either of those video clips I presented to you. If you did you would have clearly heard people saying they would not vote for Obama, some even saying because he is black. One says over and over again that he is a Muslim even when the reporter and her friend at the table with her tell her it isn’t so (sounds like my aunt). Don’t forget, I have relatives who live in WV and SE Ohio. They are ALL educated people, meaning a college education, but they are bigots because they tell me why they are not voting for Obama. It has nothing to do with his policies. They are blue Democrats and never will be anything else. But, they can’t bring themselves to vote for a black man. Pitiful, IMO. Are you from WV?

That brings up another bigoted situation. While we were on vacation my sister had my mother staying with her for the 10 days. My sister has a Limited Edition Thunderbird convertible and this one congresswoman always asks her to drive her in the parades around here. Judy drove her in the Gay Pride Parade. My mother, who is afraid of everything especially staying by herself, stayed by herself in their huge home while all of them went to the Gay Pride Parade. She couldn’t stand the thought of watching “these people” in a parade. But, you have to realize that she is 83 and will never change her opinions.

She didn't know anyone who was openly gay, so anything was fair game. As they say in the south, it's just the way she was raised, bless her heart.

And btw, jamie and other Hillary supporters here were called racist repeatedly and doggedly (not by dog that I can recall btw) by Obama supporters - and by no means by all Obama supporters - for comments that had nothing to do with Obama's heritage and everything to do with his policies.

To some extent I have to take him at his word on the first issue and on faith on the second. And I expect he will keep the major retirement and medical programs in place. Any other issue I agree with him on is nice but not necessary, but I would like to know. Frankly, I wish he were much clearer in the issues section of the website and would rely less on excerpts from his speeches. As I have said before, I really do not want to be put in the position of defending Sen McCain or beating the drums for him. My decision to vote for him is entirely personal and -- to a large extent -- generational. I do think that Sen Obama is likely going to win quite handily and he will certainly win my state.

I will just say here that, were I to make a list, I disagree with both candidates almost equally. And so long as Congress remembers that they are not an extension of the Executive, I don't feel that either person would be a disaster.

  351. Maggisd,

Clearly Obama made two serious lipstakes.

    My policy:
    1. If it happens to your body, it is your business within the law regulating medical practice.
    2. End judicial murder.
    3. Leave Iraq.
    4. A Manhattan Project style commitment to lowering carbon emissions by 50% in 12 years, and eliminating dependence on rock oil and coal. E85, bio-diesel, and plugin hybrids, real mass transit, solar panel and planted roofing, and making suburban developments pay for the extension of roads, electrical grids, and sewer and water BEFORE those suburban developments are built. Suburban sprawl is the greatest consumer of energy in the US.
    5. Dismantle the caste system that the returdlicans have set up: must include treating the transfer of wealth from the dead to the living being as ordinary income, and re-establish a lower tax rate for labor income as opposed to investment income.
    6. Corporate: Strengthen Investors' rights. Pay, benefits, and bonuses to top 5 executives must be paid in the US. OSHA must vigorously investigate and prosecute violations in mining, meatpacking, and field work. The INS must vigorously investigate and prosecute corporations which have recruited and smuggled aliens into the US to work (see 11 and 12 below)..
    7. Indict, try, convict, and sentence the war criminals, and perjurers in the bush crime family. Same for those who made money through inside information. Same for the folks who engineeered the theft of the 2000 election in FL, and the theft of ballots in OH in the 2004 election. Sentence to life w/o parole, preferably daily waterboarding, HAHAHA.
    8. Impeach and remove Clarence Thomas or Antonin Scalia - I can't remember which - for voting on an issue in which his son had an interest.
    9. Re-introduction of the fairness doctrine. Freedom of speech is trumped by the public ownership of all frequencies, and the public good.
    10. Marriage is the social union of two willing adults.
    11. Vigorous prosecution of the Mann Act of 1910. 25 years w/o parole for internal traffickers of adults, life w/o parole for external traffickers, and traffickers of minors. Transporting people across state lines to prostitute them in front of cameras shall be covered by the Mann Act.
    12. Abolition of slavery.

  393. Maggisd,

Who says a pardon cannot be revoked? The revocation would be an executive privilege just like any other.

The entire system of executive privilege is tradition rather than statute, and is interpreted differently by each passing administration. The bushcheneymccain view is essentially that propounded by john ehrlichman before the Senate Watergate Panel: anything a president does is legal. I say, stay with that interpretation for a couple of years, until the retractlican party changes it's minds about executive privilege, and writes that change of mind in stone. Perhaps then, we can unanimously return to constitutional government.

  423. Nick and maggisd,

Yup, Article I gives the exec the right to pardon. I have found no Article, Amendment, or Statute limiting the right to pardon. Only tradition supports your interpretation of a limitation on the executive pardon.
Normally, regustlicans admit of no power beyond the grasp of the President. It can cause a churn in the guts of guys like Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia. Now, I admit that tradition is a very strong argument. However, there is nothing written that I know of to guide the SCOTUS in making a decision on the matter.

Anyway, it can be interpreted that the power to bestow implies the power to retract. After all, this is an executive power, not a power of a now defunct presidency or of that scofflaw formerly pardoned in a bygone day by said defunct presidency. And, that is the way I would have MY Soliciter General argue it in the SCOTUS: the defunct presidency no longer has the power of pardon, only a sitting president does, and a sitting president can rescind a pardon, as the power of bestowal implies the power of retraction. In the meantime, while the SCOTUS is chewing on that bit of reasoning, I might push all the formerly pardoned scofflaws into Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, or into one of the Moldovan or Syrian torture chambers.

  458. Pertaining to the discussions on the inception and early adoption of television in the U.S.:

To those who would remember, as it was before my time; when did television go from a novel, sparsely populated medium to the chief brain-washing device it is today? Was it the Kennedy assassination and the coverage of it? Sullivan and the Beatles? It would be a great blow to my esteem of the greatest musical group of the last 60 years to realize they were instrumental in the dumbing-down of our society. White Album still rules, regardless.

A great number of the older generation in my family, and I've noticed the phenomenon in plenty of other families, are glued to the TV. Every conversation revolves around some program that has been watched, or some funny advert, or whatever. TV upon waking up, TV after arriving home, TV during dinner, after dinner, before bed. It's pretty nauseating. One thing is for sure, at least in my family- the older folks love them some TV.

Just a thought, and I realize not a very eloquent explanation of it. I would genuinely be interested in the input and insight of those who witnessed said development.

The Kennedy assassination coverage was truly unusual, but while people watched it intensely for three days, they went back to normal viewing afterwards.

Now when I was in my early 20s people still ate dinner without the TV on and children went out to play after school.. Now the elederly were starting to watch TV in their living rooms while dining on TV trays. My grandmother watched a great deal and that was '69.

I don't think it became the total, 24 hour a day obsession until the advent of CNN and that was 1980. So I guess you would have to say the change happened somewhere between 1970 and 1980.

Chef Sheila; 3:01 pm..... I'm extremely sorry if I offended anyone, here is the moral of the story..... It was meant to be just a joke, like a polish joke or a blonde joke but the middle eastern gentleman took the license plate number of the vehicle and reported a hate crime, the driver was charged and had to go to court where he lost, had to pay a substantial fine and apologise publicly.

It just means to me that there is no humour anymore, things have to be so politically correct. It also seems to me that things, like people not being able to laugh at themselves are the reasons behind a lot of the racism that occurs, it starts as a joke and because of the system it becomes something altogether different - Karolenna is a perfect example of someone who screeches racism at the drop of a hat, or rug, or whatever.

  502. Okay,xrep - you did it. You made a list of goals/policy
that is perfect. I might be able to add one or two, but would change only one!

Replace theconjunction "or" between Thomas and Scalia with the conjunction "and". Get rid of 'em both.

Sheila - I'm having some trouble with my typekey entry as well. This is the second time and I may just re-register. It's annoying that you can't call, but have to wait till they email you back.

Also, I think I did read some "racist" charges from someone here, but not sure.In the MSM, the charge was slung around with impunity. I suspect it wasn't believed by many except some of Obama's supporters, which would make sense. (No insult intended-just an
    opinion.)

I also suspect that the supporters of each candidate feel differently about the two and that's what we react kinda differently to perceived insults. I think Obama's supporters believed so strongly in him as a man and in
his personality and message that they really identify with him. He said what they've been thinking, so any criticism or insult of Obama insults the hopes and beliefs of his supporters. Insult him and you insul his fans.

I think we Hillary supporters didn't really hope or dream, but we felt we knew, not hoped, what she would do. It isn't her personality - I only came to admire her during the campaign for her energy and stgrength. Still I wouldn't vote for her on that. I voted for her for what I know she is, not what I hope she will be.
Past performance showing future performance, and all that. Most of the criticisms of Hillary seemed to be aimed directly as her fans - i.e. grey-haired old hags and racists.

I know that's a lot of generalization, but I think there is something to it. Look at the things said about Obama:
empty suit, fraud, inexperienced etc. Those were about him and his fans felt it personally. I didn't care what they

KGC- yes the heat is terrible. My little a/c is trying but in my lr it is now 88. Of course it beats 99 outside. Also air quality is dangerous for people with sensitivities - like me with asthma.

My next complaint is you guys have picked today to go on and on and on about FOOD.

If you wonder why those last two subjects are problematic for me, let me simply say that I have embarked on the long journey of preparation for one of medicines most horrible procedures. the excessive heat and talk of food add to my misery. I'm sure that's
TMI, and I wasn't going to mention it, but then thought, what hte hell, why should I be the only sufferer.Sorry.

  508. I like the thought Nick, but neither of those two actions will result in squat. Senators are not beholden to their constituents, they are beholden to their corporate paymasters and the party elite.

I'm sure senatorial offices have a big laugh when hanging up the phone after receiving a compliant from a constituent. They probably think to themselves, "do these people even realize how this country works?"

After listening to Obama the last few weeks, I sincerely believe he gives a damn what his supporters think, as he realizes they can easily be told what to think. He will make on hell of a Master Manipulator in Chief.

  511. Hi Patsi,

Pickens is a republican oil man but he is pretty smart and surrounds himself with smarter people. I don't doubt that he will make a ton of money. I read somewhere that Texas leads the US in numbers wrt wind power. That is hard to believe with all the windmills that live in the Riverside, Ca., part of the desert. If the wind power will help us get off the oil diet then I am a supporter. I have heard that here in Ft Worth wind mills are illegal and residents are not allow to have them on their property. Said to be because of the noise they are supposed to make. I don't know.

This story coming out NOW in the msm, has been known on line for years ... THAT'S why they won't puill out .. those CONDITIONS have always been for US OIL to get no bid contract for the oil in Iraq .. that's the only reason we ever went in & now are staying ..

  516. There are people that live near here that do use wind power to create electricity. If I remember, they store to batteries and run the house from that. I think an alternator from a car will convert the power to AC current. I have read that if you make more power than you use, you can sell it to the local energy companies. That is all hearsay but I have read that.

Champ, great minds, that is what I said this morning as I watched Pickens on Good morning America.
I alos turned to my wife and said . I think he is angling for more tax breaks for his wind farms.. Pickens was claiming the wind power would freeup natural gas and we could use it to power opur cars.
We could do that now with or without wind power.

  518. Okay, I know that some of the O-team hate the word "feminist" -- but here's a great story. This artist, David Lynn Jones (surely one of country's hotties) wrote a song as a tribute to his truck driving sister. When they made this video, the first woman they brought in to play the role of his sister was a mega model. David took one look at her and said, "You've got to be effing me! My sister was run ragged trying to raise her kids. Get a real person to play her."

So they did just that, and, as David said at the time: "This is a video about a feminist."

  519. The same logic would imply we went into Germany in WWII for their silverware.

It's a red herring. Middle eastern economies depend on our consumption of oil, they are happy to sell it to us without being forced to. If you think that we will just plunder Iraqi oil reserves without compensating the warlords controlling it, I personally believe you are mistaken, Once again, could be wrong.

There's no vacation in the struggle for liberty, Horse, because there's no rest for the wicked, either.

As for mitigating my own dependance on foreign oil, I bought a bicycle yesterday. It's fun, cheap, and does wonders for my sanity. Kind of dangerous, however. Oh well, so is getting out of bed.

  527. maggs, Bill ran to the left in the primaries, then returned to the center from whence he had come.

The guy was molesting women in the Oval Office, for crying out loud. Not trying to impose my morality on another, but is nothing sacred? Let's not forget the old saying "Don't defecate where you eat".

He also delivered perhaps the most infamous line from a public official in my lifetime, "that would depend on what the definition of 'is' is". How could anyone who who say such a thing be trusted with anything?

All that aside, the reason a public official secretly engaging in extramarital affairs compromises national security and undermines the function of their office is because it makes them vulnerable to blackmail.
