Obama Goes Global

| | Comments (466)

brandenburgertor_sn.jpgPresident-in-waiting Barack Obama, having secured conventional wisdom in America, seemed to go much further in Berlin on Thursday -- the presumed Democratic nominee now aspires to be the leader of Earth itself. And why not? Somebody has to.

Perhaps Americans are so desperate to be liked by the rest of the world that Obama is on to something. We've felt insecure to Europeans since our founding. After irritating them for eight years with George W. Bush's macho thing, perhaps we want to be hip again.

But no matter how hip we might think we are, Europeans won't really give us credit. It's all they've got left.

  1. "President-in-waiting Barack Obama. . .now aspires to be the leader
    of Earth itself."

You certainly have a way with words, Mr. Crawford.

Perhaps we should call Mr. Obama, Emperor of the World.

  3. Prof Marcia -- Emperor of the World seems so limiting. I think Czar of the Universe would be more appropriate.

  4. Check out David Brooks in NYT today. Mr. Brooks seems to have fallen out of love with The One. He says that The One has "jumped the shark" with his Berlin speech.

  6. Germans, as a people, are different. And sometimes not in a good way, as history has shown.

They seem to love having the cohesiveness that overarching rhetoric performed in magnificent spaces generates.

That's what Messrs Kennedy and Reagan counted on, and what Mr Obama's campaign understood.

If more examples of rhetoric-generated German crowds are needed, I will oblige.

  8. "leader of Earth itself."

    Obama, King of the World!
(He'll have to share that honor with James Cameron, of course)
Since he's already "King of the 3-D World".

High, lofty ideas. Who can fault that?

  10. firstly, craig, it's not that americans are so desperate to be liked as much as it is that the rest of the world longs for america, the world leader, to reflect the morality and hope that it used to possess...before it went bush league.

secondly, to all the nay sayers...tell me again...what is it that's WRONG about a leader who is intelligent, articulate, and inspirational?

  11. Wow -- That David Brooks op/ed is sharp considering he was slobbering over O some months ago:

"But he has grown accustomed to putting on this sort of saccharine show for the rock concert masses, and in Berlin his act jumped the shark. His words drift far from reality, and not only when talking about the Senate Banking Committee. His Berlin Victory Column treacle would have made Niebuhr sick to his stomach.

Obama has benefited from a week of good images. But substantively, optimism without reality isn’t eloquence. It’s just Disney. "

  14. Ha! So, his self-stylized presidential seal didn't show enough bravado, now running for leader of the entire Earth. (Could come in handy when the aliens make contact & ask us to take them to our leader...we've never had just one before.)

MoJo had it right, too. He was pro-America because he had to be.

Along that line, I think BO's European vacation may have had one more target: He looked more pro-American to Americans because he was against a non-American backdrop...you know, like when you stand next to someone short in a picture so that you'll look taller.

    Posted by: blueINdallas | July 25, 2008 7:51 AM

  15. Craig,

As usual you try to bring the discussions back to reality, after watching the speech, it was clear that Obama aspires to be "leader of the earth".

Frankly, I'm looking for a President of the United States

  16. Morning, Dog.

I simply can't imagine Mr McCain making such a speech. I don't think it's in his character.

With such a speech, timing is everything; he should have done it next year on a beautiful spring day in _________. Does anyone have an alternative venue to suggest?

Mr Bush made sweeping statements during his campaign. Like telling veterans, "A promise made will be a promise kept."

It will be more than good riddance come January,

  17. Bowmanc - You may be on to something there; BO heading up the UN.

Question: Now that BO says he has moved away from the left in order to be all things to all people, what would preclude him from having Hil'ry as veep? The arguement that he is the new, improved, lemon fresh agent of change has kind of fizzled.

Craig, I just realized we missed your birthday this year. Hope it was a good one.

  91. "give them to the women's shelter"

Chloe -- we have a new challange here in Nashville. The YWCA is trying to set up a better, more organized way to move women from the shelters to living on their own. They are in the process of renting apartments, and furnishing them. I learned of the plan when I offered some baby furniture that I'd bought for times my granddaughter was here. She's outgrown it all now.

They also need dishes, bedding, everything.

Most people have good things that are gathering dust in closets or store rooms. My daughter says she still has wedding gifts in the original boxes.

Sorry, Patsy, ruler of the blog. I just tell it the way it is. You've heard the talk on television from other SE Ohio people, WV, and KY. It's not about me or my family. It’s an ethnic thing. Bigotry rules the area. It's a matter of fact.

Actually, I had a very good Christian (Congregational) upbringing, thanks to my father who was an intelligent, good person.

UB, I intend to have a good time. My daughter is taking my beautiful granddaughter down today and leaving tomorrow morning since her husband is traveling. My aunt has already called saying Mom is asking where I am. She will do that until I get there. Just thought I would check to see what was going on before I logged off. Have a nice day all.

NEW YORK, New York, October 18, 2006 (ENS) - The world's 10 most polluted places threaten the health of more than 10 million people in eight countries, according to a report released today by a U.S. environmental action group. Three of the most polluted sites are in Russia, the report said, with the remaining seven located in China, Dominican Republic, India, Kyrgyzstan, Peru, Ukraine and Zambia.

The report was released by the Blacksmith Institute and compiled by a team of international environment and health experts, including researchers from Johns Hopkins University, Mt. Sinai Medical Center and City University of New York.

Research Librarians fell in love with the Internet many, many years ago. The majority of those resources that used to surround them and that they had to manually rummage through to find info is now on the net, much of it in areas that are not even accessible to the average user such as JSTOR ( http://www.jstor.org/?cookieSet=1 )

Of course the skills they had to learn about what and where to search still apply.

He fell into the glass doors of their shower and knocked them off the track. He hurt his hip, but nothing serious. This happened after 11:30 p.m. My Mom could not get him up and he could not get up on his own. She had to call 911 to get someone to come and help him get up, since I was at work and she didn't wanna call anybody else that late at night. He just makes bad judgments and gets himself hurt a lot. Thanks for asking, chloe.

  105. For most people now, all you need is a library card to access a wide variety of previously unavailable data bases. Most libraries have made available these services. In California --any resident can get a library card from any county. SF and LA are especially good ones. Plus the state if working on a big inter connection program which means you can use the online services regardless.

Also college libraries also offer online (normally fee based data services for free) for the most part you have to use them at the library but if you are taking courses they are available at remote sites with your registration cards.

Possibly the best online services and a leader has been the library in Philadelphia.

  151. I saw that yesterday there was a lot of discussion about tearing down the Berlin Wall. I visited Berlin in 2000 and I saw famous places such as Checkpoint Charlie, the church that was bombed during WWII and still stands, and parts of the Berlin Wall that remains up. What I found interesting is that many apartment buildings served as part of the wall, The residents had to move out, and the windows were removed and concrete put in place. Also, you could see many bullet holes in various buildings where it was clear people had tried to escape. So sad. One of the most beautiful places to visit was Potsdam. Absolutely gorgeous! A beautiful castle just inside the "city". I walked across the bridge from West Berlin into Potsdam where the two "sides" would mutually trade their captured spies in order to get their own back.

When I was a kid, I remember my Mom hopping out of her car to run into a record shop to buy a 45 rpm. I remember it to this day! It had a pink label and it said "BIG TOP" on it, and the song was WEST OF THE WALL by Toni Fisher. I have always loved this song, and now you can hear it too. Toni died a few years ago of a heart attack. She was a wonderful singer who didn't get even half of the attention and interest I think she deserved.

Take a listen and tell me what you think... I think it's lovely

  159. I rather like the fact that Obama is traveling around Europe and the Middle East. It shows he is willing to listen and offer his vision for the direction of our country and for improving international relations. I think saying he wants to be the leader of the Earth is a bit exaggerated! I think he understands the power of the Presidency and if he wins the election, he will have to work closely with many leaders of many countries. Since he is not well known on the international stage, this gives him the opportunity to introduce himself. Saying that other countries must be more accountable in the fight against terrorism, for example, sends a strong message that he promises better relations with the United States and also expects better cooperation mutually among the various leaders.

    I don't know, but I can't really see where this is negative (??) !!

If you come in thinking that Obama is somehow "arrogant", which is a classic term given black men who are confident in their abilities and don't avert their eyes, then you think Obama is running for the President of the Earth. Now, I don't seem to remember any objections when people would refer to the President as the "Leader of the Free World", but hey, they didn't look like Obama then did they? So that's why you get these comments about Obama.

  212. "Say what you will about Obama, at least he's working his ass of to get it."

He has? You mean he is continuing to do his Europe traveling road show. Poor guy can't even answer Katie Couric's question about his vote on the surge, which she had to ask him 4 times. And this was a simple question dealing with the outcome of the American surge which Obama was against. He finally gave a very convoluted answer.

"Couric: And I really don't mean to belabor this, Senator, because I'm really, I'm trying … to figure out your position. Do you think the level of security in Iraq would exist today without the surge?"

"Obama: Katie, I have no idea what would have happened had we applied my approach, which was to put more pressure on the Iraqis to arrive at a political reconciliation. So this is all hypotheticals. What I can say is that there's no doubt that our U.S. troops have contributed to a reduction of violence in Iraq. I said that-- not just today, not just yesterday, but I've said that-- previously. What that doesn't change is that we've got to have a different strategic approach if we're going to make America as safe as possible."

The only person dealing in hypotheticals, is BHO. He is trying to defend an idea that never happen, and can't give credit to the surge which did happen. What does this say about someone who can't admit they were wrong.

I told them, if I have anything else in the future, I'd give them a call .. I wrote them a letter explaining why there were so m any & then went on to explain that these style were the most popular, so of course their returns amounts would be higher ...

  238. Security Guard Who Rescued John Edwards From The Bathroom Details His Heroics To FOX

"The Beverly Hilton Hotel guard said he encountered a shaken and ashen-faced Edwards ... in a hotel men's room early Tuesday morning in a literal tug-of-war with reporters on the other side of the door.

"What are they saying about me?" the guard said Edwards asked.

"His face just went totally white," the guard said, when Edwards was told the reporters were shouting out questions about Edwards and Rielle Hunter, a woman the National Enquirer says is the mother of his child."

  247. Mr. D,
"That's a story that will never be written."

You may be right about that. I only say that because the MSM knows when they do write about his defeat, team BHO will play the race card. There will be no other way to explain how the youthful, good looking, sometimes articulate teleprompter aided, well educated, one with a sparse resume, lacking any meaningful experience, why a person of color didn't win the election. It has to be because of his race? That will be the story feed to MSM by BHO people for his defeat come this November. Chris Matthews has already said as much. It is always racist when it doesn't favor the enlighten one. No BHO, it is far much simpler than that, you just aren't qualified.

The enlighten one is seen by many of his supporters as the new Messiah, but he is really the new "Messi-Uh"

The great orator without his teleprompter. Is it no wonder he doesn't want to debate McCain in a town hall setting? How would he maneuver that teleprompter?

Weh, weh, let me put it this way. Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, We're -- we're trying to -- you know, we've got a bipartisan group here and -- and -- and, uh, uh, uh, uh, um, uh, uh, uh.

    Jack !

I can tell you that up til Bush-tard was selected Prez, the Europeans I knew in The Netherlands and Belgium held America and Americans in high regard. Some Belgians have even said to me "of course we love America. You guys saved us... twice!" What is interesting is the fact that the first "rescue" of Belgium was a food drive organized and administered by Herbert Hoover! Yes Herbert Hoover!! The Belgians LOVED him:

The son of a Quaker blacksmith, orphaned at an early age, Hoover achieved international success as a mining engineer and world-wide gratitude as “The Great Humanitarian” who fed war torn Europe during and after World War I. In the process he developed a unique philosophy - one balancing responsibility for the welfare of others with an unshakable faith in free enterprise and dynamic individualism. In time this would lead him to feed a billion people in 57 countries.

    http://www.rememberinghoover.be/

As appreciative the Europeans are for America's role in protecting their continent, they are also proud people and if other lands try to bully them, they will stand firm. The idea that their gratitude for U.S. sacrifice means they should ask "how high" when the American government tells them to "jump" only insults them and their sense of cultural and National pride.

  272. Obama's path to presidency is far from clear

"Fresh polls show that he has been unable to convert weeks of extensive media coverage into a widened lead. And some prominent Democrats whose support could boost his campaign are still not enthusiastic about his candidacy.

Several new surveys show that Obama is in a tight race or even losing ground to Republican John McCain, both nationally and in two important swing states, Colorado and Minnesota. One new poll offered a possible explanation for his troubles: A minority of voters see Obama as a familiar figure with whom they can identify.

Obama also faces discontent from some of Hillary Rodham Clinton's most ardent supporters, who are put off by what they describe as a campaign marked by hubris and a style dedicated to televised extravaganzas."

  287. Champ,

I usually just lurk here but couldn't help but respond to your thinking of moving to NC.

If you're considering NC here are some things to think about: ( I could go on and on)

Check out the figures for what % of the county is on medicaid. I believe NC still requires the counties to supplement the State's costs. This may be ending soon. If not, it is the cause of high taxes in many counties and results in a lot less spent on schools, roads, etc. in the county budgets.

Find a place where there have always been a significant number of people who are not natives of NC. There are a lot areas of the state where you'll have a hard time being accepted if"You're not from around here" unless you're planning to build a $1million dollar home or do a lot of business with a local contractor. Then you might not be accepted, but they'll accept your money.

If you're from the north get ready to be called a Yankee from time to time, and not in a friendly manner. My local paper regularly has columns derogatory to people from the north as if its funny and that celebrate the redneck life of big ol' trucks, etc. Check out the local papers, they'll tell you a lot in a short time.

I'd recommend renting for a time before buying a home in NC. If you're "not from around here" it can be difficult to sell your home in some areas. There are areas where the locals like to wait until you just move out and you're ready to sell cheap.

The county vehicle taxes are very high and if you live in a town or city you pay higher than if you live outside the town limits.

Lot of drug problems here, different drugs in different areas of the state. Its pretty blatant and unchecked in many, many areas. Lots of associated crimes.

Check weather.gov. for pollution levels over time. Lots of code red and orange in certain areas of the state. If you live below the mountains you look up and think, "wow, I don't want to be breathin' that!" If you're on the mountain, you look down and think the same. So you move to within 3 hours of the coast and a hurricane buzzsaws its way through your area and for three years after the lgging trucks are running people off the road removing the fallen trees.

If you've always enjoyed the company of people of diverse racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds choose your area of NC carefully. You could be shunned for this.

Do you have any ancestors buried in NC? This could be a great help to you, especially if they're 3-4 generations removed. It would be to your benefit if you have a common last name, one that's easy to pronounce and doesn't announce you're not fom around here.

I'm sure there are many fine places to live in NC. You just have to find them. Unfortunately, we didn't have a choice in the area we're in and we've found we're on what we call "the wrong side of the river". Just across the river there are more people who "ain't from around here" and its like a whole different world. There's more acceptance in every regard.

We'd move back to MI in a heartbeat if we thought we could adapt to driving on snow and ice again and survive -40 windchills and shoveling snow. Too old for that now!

Of course there's no perfect place to live but the lessons we've learned have been very painful and costly and we wish someone would have given us info like this before we decided to move here.

Sorry this is so long. Good luck to you Champ!

  288. From the daily gallup analysis

Now, on the basis of a strong showing in Thursday night's Gallup interviewing, Obama is back to a 6-point margin over McCain. On Thursday Obama made his highly-anticipated speech to a crowd estimated to be larger than 200,000 in Berlin, Germany, and it is not implausible that it might have affected enough voters to move his overall advantage in the horse race tracking a few points. The drop off in Obama's support earlier this week, however, suggests caution in assuming that the trip will have any lasting impact on the structure of the race.

This means that the jury is still out until the tracking results through the weekend and into next week are monitored carefully. To signify a real difference in the support patterns of voters in the U.S., the data would either need to show a sustained 6-point plus lead for Obama over a number of days, or conversely, a sustained pattern by which John McCain moves into the lead (something he has not done since early June) and sustains that lead.

"Obama web site has a wealth of information on it regarding issues"

All of which were probably written by someone else. For the record that would be true about positions statements on Sen. Clinton's site when she was running.

What we haven't seen yet is his ability to express those positions on his feet without the benefit of a teleprompter. Most of his debate performances were very weak though he was getting stronger the longer it went on. You can thank Sen. Clinton for that because she pushed him to be better and not be all slogans.

Lately he has slipped back into the cotton candy speeches. Until we see him in a debate with McCain, we won't know if he has internalized all of those issues in a way that he can contest an opposing viewpoint.

Fortunately, I believe that McCain will be a weaker opponent that Hillary was.

  310. Hey UB,

I think that's been one of the refreshing things about this Obama campaign. Younger (under 45) voter have been really open about Obama. They haven't held all of the weird notions about why whites should be over blacks. And I think that mindset is a great indicator that race, at least in this particular instance, will lessen. Now, there are many, many other areas where race is a factor. And we'll have to chip away at those places.

  315. Divided Loyalites, Obama’s Eligibility Problem — Part 1

"Article II of the Constitution of the United States DOES NOT mean what almost everybody thinks that it means. ...it ISN’T talking about WHERE the POTUS is born.

No, the Framers were talking about Allegiance, Loyalty. The POTUS had to have only ONE Allegiance.

There is no way a person who has Dual Citizenship, or who has had Dual Citizenship, should be eligible under Article II. As you will see in Part Two there is good evidence that Senator Barack Obama is such a person, that Governor Bill Richardson may also be and that Senator John McCain is not. By definition NATURAL BORN = BORN IN THE (SOLE) ALLEGIANCE OF THE USA, not born on US Soil.

The whole First Part of this Article cites Case Law, Sources, Precedent and gives the opinion of Lawyers. The Chief Counsel for the INS has said that this argument is Valid, he doesn’t like it, but he admits it is true."

Oh, when the trumpet sounds its call
Oh, when the trumpet sounds its call

Not exactly---DOD official cautioned Obama's campaign that his planned visit to wounded American troops could not be political in nature & that he would be barred from bringing along campaign staff & reporters.

Obama was advised that he could only visit the military facility with his Secret Service detail & Senate staff.

"We made it clear to him that campaign staff & press would not be permitted to accompany him. We relayed those ground rules. They made a choice based upon the information we relayed to them. It was (Obama's) choice.

Team Obama tells a different story. Axelrod claimed the Pentagon 'viewed this as a campaign event & therefore they said he should not come'.

Obama's adviser Gibbs stopped short of saying they were told not to come but also suggested that even a visit by Obama alone may have been at issue. He said one of Obama's military advisers had been informed that the visit may be seen as a campaign stop.

  387. Here's another take on media bias (Investors Business Daily is not liberal but the premise is hard to dispute).

"Putting money where mouths are: Media donations favor Dems 100-1"

    http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=301702713742569

"True to form journalists are defending their bias by saying that one candidate, Obama, is more newsworthy than the other. It is we, the hoi polloi, who reveal our bias by questioning the neutrality of these learned professionals in their ivory-towered newsrooms."

Looking at the amount of money journalists contributed so far this election cycle favors Democrats by a 15:1 ratio over Republicans, with $225,563 going to Dems vs. $16,298 to Reps.

235 journalists donated to dems, 20 to reps.

Maybe just maybe if these journalists would reveal their preference, we could then judge for ourselves the newsworthiness of their reporting.

  394. My whole theory about what is wrong with the media these days is that all the stars are no longer born "elsewhere" - It is an East Coast college crowd who don't really believe that people who count live anywhere else. Most of them never had to be concerned with earning a living until such time as they got a well paying "position" (not a job). Their idea of roughing it is being an intern while living on mommy or daddy's credit card.

    Birthplaces as example -

    Cronkite - Missouri
    Murrow - North Carolina
    Huntley - Montana
    Brinkley - North Carolina
    Olbermann - NYC
    Cooper - NYC

The problem with a great number of "successful people" is that they were born with a head start and take credit as if they achieved everything on their own. I don't begrudge them the success, I begrudge them the egotism.

Certainly a talented person who gets an assist getting in the door has to produce once they get there, but don't act as if mommy, daddy, money, mentor, ivy league university etc. had nothing to do with it.

  413. Disney Films
    Snow White: Naming the Dwarfs
    1937

The dwarfs themselves were, Disney believed, the heart of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and many grueling weeks went into their development. Other sources of information might have you believe that as many as fifty different dwarf names were conceived of and rejected, but this is not the case -- at no time did Disney ever consider having more than seven dwarfs, although he did toy with several different sets of dwarfs.

It was originally thought that the seven dwarves should mirror some "seven" that the audience was familiar with. The seven wonders of the world, perhaps, or the seven sins (Envy, Lust, Gluttony, Sloth, Ire, Hubris, and Doc). Someone suggested that the dwarfs be gamblers -- the "lucky seven." Another young writer, Akira Kurosawa, suggested that they be seven samurai, but everyone just looked at him like he'd stood on his head in church and went on with their own suggestions.

For a while, the idea was tossed around to have the dwarfs named after important figures in literature and music (e.g., Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, George, and Ringo), with appropriate "in jokes" made through the film, but test audiences found such highbrow tactics offputting.

Finally, Disney hit upon the idea of thinking of characteristics for the dwarfs and then giving them appropriate names afterwards. This "backwards" method of naming turned out to be just the ticket. Many possible characteristics were considered (incorrigible, bossy, orderly, stately, spacey, soused, albino, amphibious, destitute, disposable, ticklish, timely, effeminate, fastidious, feral, dressy, dusty, hairy, salty, testy, snooty, tasty, pasty, stuffy, picky, gangly, parsimonious, unintelligible, whimsical, stigmatic, socialist, smelly, tardy, mushy, nerdy, groovy, bland, boneless, blasphemous, anemic, anarchic, platonic, radical, rascally, quarterly, literary, ineligible, impregnable, inflammable, flatulent, genderless, marginal, hideous, hysterical, hyperactive, hyperbolic, hypersensitive, bureaucratic, Brobdingnagian, codgerly, automated, balding, bionic, bivalve, bubbly, bigo ego, piggy, chipper, floundering, fifer, fiddler, practical, jasmine, maleficent , scar, beauty, beast, Captain Hook, pearly white, cross-pollinated, low-carb, tone deaf, decompressed, sunburnt, tarnished, transparent, trustworthy, persistent, pantsless, omnivorous, ominous, omnimoving, oxymoronic, omnipresent, onomatopoetic, caffeinated, cancerous, titanic, Herculean, narcissistic, Sisyphustic, cuckolded, inarticulate, incontinent, luminous, miniscule, miserly, mossy, myopic, orchestral, canine, cranky, crinkly, and Bernie, for example), before six were chosen. The number was rounded to seven with the addition of Doc (because Disney thought it would be funny if there was "a doctor in the house.")

And to relate it to Obama, he worked hard, he grew up in not so perfect circumstances and he excelled....he excelled against the odds.....he should be proud and more power to him. Pick on him because this or that, but he achieved a hell of a lot in his life.

When you listened to a Cronkite, it was the VOICE of middle America. All the great Network newsmen and the radio men before them could hear America talking.
The modern broadcasters are lucky if they can hear past 42nd street.

Sure there are ignorant, uneducated, and superstitious people across the 2500+ mile expanse of the US, but not all of them or even most of them. The majority get up every day and go to work, raise their family, and try their best to do their best in the world. They can handle real news programming rather than programming fluff.

Success is as dangerous as failure.
Hope is as hollow as fear.

What does it mean that success is a dangerous as failure?
Whether you go up the ladder or down it,
    you position is shaky.
When you stand with your two feet on the ground,
you will always keep your balance.

What does it mean that hope is as hollow as fear?
Hope and fear are both phantoms
that arise from thinking of the self.
When we don't see the self as self,
what do we have to fear?

See the world as your self.
Have faith in the way things are.
    Love the world as your self;
then you can care for all things.

Here is also what is really the quintessential version of FROM A DISTANCE sung by Nanci Griffith...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waZt7TQZvpM

I may have mentioned this before, but Julie Gold wrote this song while working as a secretary. Christine Lavin introduced Julie to Nanci who recorded the song and later Nanci introduced Julie to Bette Midler. Or it could be Nanci who introduced Julie to Christine to Bette. Anyway, this is how these singers and songwriters work together as a community. During the first Iraq war I would play this song on the radio and feel so helpless at the stupidity of the whole invasion. Anyway, it still touches my heart.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waZt7TQZvpM

And I posted these because Jack posted a Nanci Griffith video. And I am betting that both Jamie and Patsi will love them. The rest of you folks I am not sure of your musical tastes, but Nanci's voice is that of a beautiful pixie angel.

  440. I am conflicted...

It seems that I have one leg in the Obama camp and one leg in the Hillary camp. I am a realist and support Obama because he will, unless there is a major cock up, be the nominee. But I read the back and forth by people on both sides of the debate and I find myself partially agreeing and partially disagreeing with what is being said.

For example: "I don't know any Clinton supporter - people I know don't think she is running."

    Posted by: unlikely_burrito | July 25, 2008 5:01 PM

I disagree a bit here because I am still a Clinton supporter but I know that she isn't the nominee. And after a lot of self doubts about where I stood, I decided that my anger and hurt over the way this turned out is no reason for ME to not support the Democrat. Also, Obama does bring a whole new historic moment in our country's history, and yes partially because of his ethnic makeup. If his "Audacity of Hope" speech at the Democratic National Convention of 2004 serves as a model of how things will get done, we will only be the better for it.

And I say it over and over, Barack and Hillary look GOOD together. It's really amazing. With Mark Penn and other "professional advisors" out of Hillary's domain, I think she and Barack would SHINE!

  447. The first newscaster I remember was H.V. Kaltenborn.
He seemed to be a little man and he wore glasses. I seem to remember hearing him called conservative, but am not sure. The next one I remember was John Cameron Swayze, who had a 15 minute nightly news show. His stock phrase was 'hopscotch the world', and they usually had pictures of tanks rolling in Korea. That didn't phase me, but when I realized those pictures were gone (after 1952), I didn't understand why. We had been in a war for 6 of my first 10 years - I never thought of that before.

At any rate, I have never ever heard the kind of reporting I''ve heard and seen in the last year. Just the horrific grammar reporters use is pathetic, but the biases have been the kind of things which you usually hear at the Thanksgiving dinner table and ruin that dinner.

I've said it before and here I go, I'll say it again, these talking heads, all of them, may be nice people but they are woefully under-educated, from Wolf Blitzer pronouncing "naif" as "nafe" to KO stumbling over the word "politesse." They have gofers who check historical facts, at times, but sometimes they don't even check.

The old newspapers, apparently, had much more biased reporters, those with columns like Drew Pearson, but I was too young to read them. Those on tv weren't stars yet. I think -my own opinion - that it's very sad that people today are accustomed to hearing the opinions of a few news readers (not reporters who go after stories) and think it is the news.

Maybe that will be the next new trend : look for our next news show.....The News but not our opinions about it.

I may be an old bag who has outlived her time in the opinion of some, but I'm still here, and I most certainly do not recommend anybody using their time on earth to realize they're wrong. I can back up my beliefs at least as well asa anybody here, and we need to discuss on that level, not on the level of Virginia Wolfe.

First thing, let's all admit we are not going to talk anyone of of any beliefs, and take it from there.

I just thought of something - if 'reporters' did seem to show a bias, it was thought to be very umprofessional.
    HA!

Oh and Belgium's number one cyclist, Tom Boonen, was told he would not be included in the Tour this year because he was recently arrested with cocaine in his possession and body.

I think the demands the Tour places on these people make them desperate to do bigger and better things and they turn to the enhancers to make it work. It goes too far !!

  451. You don't have to apologize for or justify your opinions, boop. If we as humans can't learn from the experiences and mistakes of our elders, we are doomed, indeed.

Well, actually I don't think we can, and that we are indeed doomed; but don't let that stop ya.

  452. It ain't too late, HW. Maybe soon if we all keep our mouths shut, but I don't plan on doing so.

Don't like big business? Stop giving them your money.

Don't like mass media? Stop giving it your attention.

Don't like your politicians? Stop giving them your votes.

  457. Globalism = subversion of American sovereignty. Is that what you want? You think the global power elite give a damn about your best interests? I you feel powerless under the current power structure, imagine how it will be when we are beholden to 'global' interests. Posted by: champ | July 26, 2008 2:45 AM

Not only would there be a loss of our sovereignty, but it is not our right to tell the rest of the world how they should run their governments.

We're here as an example, if they want one. But it is not our place to be the all knowing bullies of the world.

This country was founded on Freedom and Independence. We don't want outside interference, and we should only interject ourselves into other governments in the most extreme circumstances. It's arrogant for a nation so young to think they can rule the world.

  458. "Don't like big business? Stop giving them your money.

Don't like mass media? Stop giving it your attention.

Don't like your politicians? Stop giving them your votes."

Yes. Basics. Reward and Punishment Wins every time.
