John the Ripper Attacks Barack's Balloon

| | Comments (193)

Weeks ago an adviser to John McCain told me they would go "hard negative" against Barack Obama because "if we don't puncture his balloon this summer he will float right out of our hands."

Make no mistake about it. McCain's recent attacks are not isolated incidents. They are part of a long range plan to develop several story lines, or "narratives" as the political pros say, aimed at making Obama seem to be a risky choice for the White House.

Other campaigns I've seen embark upon such a strategy actually plotted this stuff on a calendar, methodically unveiling new charges just as the opponent and the news media were untangling any misrepresentations (or lies) in the last round.

This strategy depends on finding negative narratives that feel sort of true to a lot of voters, concerns that are usually surfaced in focus group polling. Once a promising story line is identified, every day you look for anything -- no matter how minor or misleading -- that might support it. Even stretching the truth, or worse, about a particular episode can work if it fits into a narrative that voters already believe about your opponent.

This is how Al Gore became seen as a serial exaggerator in the 2000 campaign. Many of the charges leveled at him, such as taking credit for the birth of the Internet, were overstated at best. But they fit a pattern that voters saw in Gore.

Consider the Obama arrogance narrative that Republicans are now developing. Even Democratic Party research has shown some voter unease along these lines. That is how McCain might get away with stretching the truth about why Obama didn't meet with injured troops on his foreign trip. (That episode also fits another narrative that the GOP is nurturing -- accusing him of indifference to the military.)

Still, with McCain doing so much of the heavy lifting in his personal remarks and television advertisements, he runs the risk of feeding his own negative narrative as ill-tempered and angry.

blue, I can't speak for the purchasing decisions of grocery chains - I was just commenting on how I thought that may have come about, and that it likely wasn't outsourcing in the pejorative sense we tend to use the word.. I'd hope some of the chains actually consider quality as well as price when they buy stuff to sell in their stores. I frankly don't know what the economics of that situation were, but I think we can reasonably assume it was competitive with offerings of Pizza made in the USA. I have to agree with you about questionning how in the world frozen pizza can be made in Italy and shipped here as economically as pizza made here, particularly considering container shipping costs these days, but the Japanese were able to do that with steel in the 70s and 80s - shipping scrap steel to Japan, making finished steel products out of it and shipping them back here and selling them more cheaply in the US than we could produce and sell those products here. I think labor costs were the primary difference with the steel industry, and have to be a big factor in the pizza industry as wel, although I never would have thought that would be the case.

True, he needs to get him a VP going and turn the VP loose. Then McCain can sound all presidential.
Craig you forgot the "obama and the Democrats don't care if you are paying high gas prices, they will make them go higher". I have heard that one several times in the last few weeks.

Although I was a Biden supporter for President, I don't think he would be a good VP. He runs off at the mouth too much. He would end up stepping on the message of the day. As a Presidential candidate that could be charming, but as VP the focus must always be on the presidential candidate, so he would be an unwanted distraction.

  7. Jack,

If Obama picked Biden, they would have to do the same thing the Kerry campaign did to Edwards.

They would use him just for the convention then make sure they shut him up. You are right, Biden would be hard to reign in and keep from talking too much.

His opponent, House Speaker Jeff Merkley , appears headed to victory. Although there is a long time to go, Democrats are feeling really good about this race.

Also, in the 5th District where I live, Democrats look like likely winners to replace retiring Democrat Darlene Hooley.

This should have been a very close race, but the GOP Pro-life candidate has been caught in a scandal involving his paying for his girlfriend's abortion inthe past while dropping her off at the clinic and then driving away. The GOP wants him to leave the race, but it appears he thinis he still can win with his millions. He is wrong.

Contempt of Congress is a drawn out, multi level procedure - The contempt finding in Congress does not apprear to be capable of the issuance of an arrest warrant as a result of its issuance until it is referred to a grand jury and an indictment issues there, but I can't say for sure without reading the statute, and I am not all that motivated to do that - I've read them before and it hurts my head to read federal statutes. Then the US Attorney could have a warrant issued, likely enforced by US Marshalls. Local and federal authorities can enforce those warrants. Here's the wiki explanation of Contempt of Congress procedures - have at.

This is such BS. Compared to past presidential campaigns that accusation is nothing. It's just that you can't stand your demigod to face a real campaign.

Interesting House amendment to the latest Senate Foreclosure Act:

Senate Housing Bill Requires eBay, Paypal, Amazon, Google, and All Credit Card Companies to Report Transactions to the Government.

"Hidden deep in Senator Christopher Dodd's 630-page Senate housing legislation is a sweeping provision that affects the privacy and operation of nearly all of America's small businesses. The provision, which was added by the bill's managers WITHOUT DEBATE this week, would require the nation's payment systems to track, aggregate, and report information on nearly every electronic transaction to the federal government."

It read like a teenager telling you how great sex is. As the teenager has just discovered sex, many of these people have just discovered politics.
    LOL
and like the teenager you can't say anything without upsetting them.

So enthusiastic about all their new techie stuff that I hear little about the human part of the convention.
I love this quote, I can see the reactions some of the county chairs I've known
"Enter the 75,000 people who will have to come hours early for Obama's acceptance speech to get through security, most carrying cell phones. As they settle in their seats, campaign aides will be on stage asking them to text message their friends and use call sheets to get people to register. "There will be a lot of idle time. We put idle people to work," Hildebrand said."

I wonder if some will think the event is more trouble than it is worth. After all, the main purpose of the convention is reaffirming old ties and building new connections. You don't need to text for that, just a couple of chairs and some cold drinks.

  132. Information conveniently avoided by certain parties regarding "Godwin's Law":

Here's with what we are familiar:

Godwin's Law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies)[1] is an adage formulated by Mike Godwin in 1990. The law states:[2][3]

"As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one."

Here's more to consider, that actually makes the invocation of said law detrimental to the citer's own argument:

"The rule does not make any statement whether any particular reference or comparison to Hitler or the Nazis might be appropriate, but only asserts that one arising is increasingly probable. It is precisely because SUCH A COMPARISON or reference MAY SOMETIMES BE APPROPRIATE, Godwin has argued[4] that OVERUSE of Nazi and Hitler comparisons should be avoided, BECAUSE IT ROBS THE VALID COMPARISONS OF THEIR IMPACT."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law

Of course, all of this is dependent on the esteem in which you hold Mike Godwin himself, whoever the hell he is.

    Posted by: champ | July 30, 2008 8:14 PM

  133. From the mouth of Mike Godwin himself

"While the world of the Net is filled with diverse critical thinkers who are ready to challenge self-indulgent or self-aggrandizing memes, we can't rely on net.culture's diversity and inertia to answer every bad meme. "The "Nazi-comparison meme has a peculiar resilience, in part because of its sheer inflammatory power ("You're calling me a Nazi? You're the Nazi in this discussion!") The best way to fight such memes is to craft counter-memes designed to put them in perspective. The time may have come for us to commit ourselves to memetic engineering - crafting good memes to drive out the bad ones."

"Obama needs to humanize himself. His campaign has done too good a job of apotheosizing him. A good start would be for Obama to apologize to Clinton supporters for not coming to her defense during the primaries and helping her battle a torrent of sexist media criticism. McCain, the soldier, conversely, needs to get disciplined and promote a rock-solid economic message. He needs to convince swing voters that he will do a better job of righting the economy than a rookie senator with little by way of a legislative record.
This race is still the Democrats' to lose. But by going overboard on unity and turning unity to hubris, they can still easily lose it."

Posted by: whskyjack Author Profile Page | July 30, 2008 9:19 PM

  143. Patd- I've read all of Burke's books except for some of the earlier ones. I do enjoy them and frankly remember practically nothing of the shoot-em-up parts.
He really conveys the feeling of small towns and backroads in the south. I can feel the humidity. If you don't like murder mysteries, tho, maybe they're not for you. Burke is a southerner and you can tell it. His characters are strong.

As for Godwin's Law, it was never passed. When I feel like bringing you-know-who into the conversation for wahtever reason, I do so and don't care what anybody thinks of it. I use the phrase 'you-know-who' simply to avoid robbing "Godwin's Law" of its meaning by causing its over-use whenever you-know-who is mentioned.

I got one email from Obama but no more. Maybe I answered it but don't remember. At any rate, no more emails have come.

Bear - I agree that Reagan didn't bring down the Berlin Wall. With all the hoopla re liberal media bias, I have often reflected on the love affair the media had with Reagan. They can admit they went easy on him, but don't seem to feel abashed about it. I've decided he was such good copy with all his smartass quips, sarcastic distracting asides, and over-simplifications, he kept them in business. They liked his personality and they kept him in power. Gorbachev and economcs brought down the wall.

  144. Birth Certificate: Obama, Soetoro, or Dunham?

"Technical experts Techdude and Polarik still maintain that the Certification of Live Birth (COLB) published on the Obama campaign’s official website, FightTheSmears, was forged.

    ... current theory of events:

    2. Obama was adopted by Lolo Soetoro in Hawaii sometime around 1965-1966.

    4. Mother and son joined Soetoro in Indonesia, where Barry Soetoro was registered in school as Lolo’s son, a Muslim, and a citizen of Indonesia.

….IF the above-stated hypotheses are correct, Obama’s current Birth Certificate in Hawaii would identify him as Barry Soetoro and his father would be Lolo Soetoro (unless, as stated, there was another adoption).

Upon request by the registrant (Sen. Obama), the State of Hawaii would issue a COLB in the name of Soetoro for child and father. Is this why the Senator has avoided showing his Birth Certificate? And is this why — if Polarik and Techdude are correct — the COLB published by Obama has been altered?"

If Obama is unable to paint mccain as a mere babybush#2 (and I don't know if that equation is still working) he will have to shove the gear lever into Open Seat strategy and floor it. There isn't much time left to secure the desired image of mccain in the public mind.

Cheech and Chong reunite as feud goes up in smoke
By EDWIN TAMARA, Associated Press Writer

    Wednesday, July 30, 2008

    (07-30) 16:09 PDT LOS ANGELES, (AP) --

Their feud finally having gone up in smoke, Cheech and Chong say they're eager to get back on the road for their first comedy tour in more than 25 years.

"We had such a legacy, such a history. We couldn't escape it, even if we tried," Tommy Chong told reporters at a news conference Wednesday at the Troubadour, the Los Angeles nightclub where the pair were discovered more than 35 years ago.

The duo said their "Light Up America" tour will kick off Sept. 12 in Philadelphia.

  168. Jack - Not to aruge with you, but to extend my description of my attitude (sounds so serious, doesn't
it?). In short, I'm just ornery, probably. The longer explanation follows:

I know about Godwin's law being 'natural' but that doesn't give it the same standing to me that gravity does. I just meant that Godwin's law is one law I'll break if I feel the need to and if my own standards are satsified. For one thing, I don't call people Nazi's and only use the comparison when I have thought about it and feel it is warranted.

What it amounts to is that I get a little stubborn when someone tells me what I "can't" do. I am such a chickenshit and I don't know when this tendency is going to come over me, and it can be embarrassing.

Years ago, another teacher told me I couldn't file a torn fingernail. I surprised myself by saying, "Yes, I can."
Believe me, that is NOT me, and I like her and knew that the sound of files made her crazy, but I still said it and am still surprised that I did.

I absolutely agree that people sling around the you-know-what label, and the labels communist and socialist without knowing what they mean. I tend to keep my mouth shut cuz I don't like to correct people, and cuz I think they are understood, but I just can't cede my own right to use an extremely valid simile or metaphor when I feel I need to.

Sturge - I haven't read anything supernatural in James Lee Burke's books, and hope you have another author in mind because I LOATHE the supernatural in my novels. You referred to him as Jamie Lee Burke and that is what I base my hope on that you are thinking of another author. Everything I've read of his is pretty straightforward. If he does have another series which does have supernatural elements, tell me pleas and I'll shun it!

In his closed door meeting with House Democrats Tuesday night ...

Obama was waxing lyrical about last week's trip to Europe, when he concluded ... "this is the moment, as Nancy [Pelosi] noted, that the world is waiting for."

The press has successfully downplayed Obama's similar remarks in the past.

Yep and that is where I think Champ may have a point to talk about the German public. Where and how do people do such things. We like to think we are a better people than that, but I don't think we are any different. It is our laws that we develope in reasonable times that keep us in line in times of stress. The laws are there to give us guidance. Working to remove the law such as Bush and company did does us no service and is a very dangerous road to be traveling down.

  176. Godwin's 'Law' is actually an easily disproven theorum. It begins as nothing more than an artful restatement of a theorum (I believe, of Twain's) about an infinite number of monkeys with typewriters eventually coming up with the works of Shakespeare.

However, following the statement of Godwin's 'Law,' Godwin's commentary lurches off to a different topic, ascribing the end of communication to that moment when name-calling begins. The conclusion is unsupported by evidence. For instance, there may have been no communication prior to the name-calling event. Further, the fact that some people beam with pleasure when they are called nazis, especially when other nazis so denominate them, demonstrates the grave fault in the development of Godwin's argument. .

For the most part, people dislike being categorized by others, and use categorization tends to cause discord.
This is an observation rather than a theorum or law.

  177. I see your point Jamie and I want to say, that at some time we were more moral, more courageous. But the truth is it has always been easy to get a mob up to do some dirty work. People taking their children and a picnic basket to a lynching. I think that a number of us have convinced our selves that we had become more civilized and were above that sort of behavior. But given a little fear and a bunch of demagoguery and the venere sloughs off.

  178. 2 other faulty 'Laws' :

1 . george will's theorum ('Law') : 'money is speech, and expenditure of money is free speech.'

    a. How about if Ken Lay steals people's money and spends it on babybush's campaign? Is stolen money free speech, too ?
    b. Theft = speech; kleptomania = prolixity ?
    c. Is spending north Korean money free speech ?
    e. If money is speech, and oil is both fungible and effortlessly exchanged for money, is not oil everywhere speech, also ? Would a refinery fire be equivalent of censorship ?

It is hard to speak with confessed thief, george will, regarding this lame hobbyhorse of his. The felon sees himself ever as the hero of the story, and the hero is never wrong. So it is with old sourpuss.

    2. B. Lyall Mastemah's theorum ('Law') : 'Prosperity is good for business.'
    a. If life insurance underwriting is your business, recession is good for business.
    b. If you are an undertaker, a crash is good for business.

I really do hate supernatural stories, but am curious as to how Burke ties it in with Robicheaux's character. Apparently Robicheaux has a "meeting" with a legendary Confederate leader in the bayou, and learns that the"war is never over." That's not as bad as some supernatural stuff, but I am not a confederacy sympathizer - so this is true un-certainty. I do like Burke's attitudes and philosophy, tho, so am interested in what he has to say about this.

Even if they still believe that Barack is the better candidate, for them to write such a letter certainly strikes a chord of fear that he is turning out to be other than what they were counting on.
