A Volatile Market for Politicians

| | Comments (485)

ratingscrashdown.jpgFor the weirdness of our politics these days, look no further than how the party controlling Congress -- the Democrats -- drove down its popularity to unprecedented single digits while still somehow running strong for gaining seats.

Or consider how the expected Republican presidential nominee John McCain, who seems down for the count in the latest Electoral College projections, still polls significantly better than his own party.

Such weirdness suggests a volatile "market" in our politics -- or perhaps Americans are just plain confused about how to distinguish their unhappiness with institutions from their relative content with personalities.

While the Democratic Congress might be as unpopular as the Legislative Branch has ever been, the party managed to recruit candidates -- even in GOP strongholds -- who are demonstrating appeal to voters. And while the GOP under George W. Bush is about as popular as a sharp stick in the eye, McCain retains a level of personal appeal that keeps him fairly competitive.

Still, the counterintuitive data out there points to how the tables could churn by November.

  4. Polls ... I wonder if, since that pollster told Reid that Bush is down to 11% approval, and Reid says that drags all politicians down...I wonder if ennui will set in and people will stay away in droves come November.

How big will Obama play at the voting booths? Students look all excited in the Spring , but when it's cold out and the repuggs make it nearly impossible to get through the lines to vote, the young vote may be neutralized by standard repugg dirty tricks.

I keep hearing how the Latino vote will sway the election, but right now no one really knows who wins that bloc, either.

Also, although it looks like an Obama electoral college win, there are too many factors involved to say Obama will win easily. I tend to think McCain will do better than Dole did in the popular vote, but McCain may meet the same electoral college slaughter that Dole endured. This would be a great thing.

A candidate/leader is not being born anymore (according to the media driven world we live in these days), he is being groomed and then marketed. The crux is to keep the strategy going... Congres is not on the market these days. they are and shoudl not sell. The items to be marketed today are BO and JmC.

  16. Craig,

Your point about how disappointed the average American is in the Democratic Congress is important (Pelosi, et al). And even though Dems continue to win new seats in Congress, this shouldn't be construed as a sign that a majority of the public is enthusiastically going to support Obama in the November election.

Many voters are as frustrated and confused as I am. We all want a silver
bullet to change our lives after eight years of Bush. As a lifer Democrat, it's easier for me to blame the Republicans for all the problems in the country.

But, the fact is, Democratic leaders haven't helped change the broken system
much either. And, after what I witnessed during the Democratic primary,
the DNC has not impressed me with savvy organization or competent leadership.

I feel the same way as maggised. That's part of the problem on this blog. lately--the subtext that now that the primary is over, all Democrats should
    immediately rally behind Obama.

Understandably, the Obama supporters want all Democrats to "come together" to overthrow the Republicans. But, some of us Dems are not going quietly into the fold. For many reasons, we have issues with the current Democratic party and with Obama. I can't see that changing anytime soon.

Sometimes, some of us feel like we're being lectured to or beaten over
the head (subtly) by some Obama supporters who want to convert us or want
us to supply constant links whenever we make a statement questioning Obama. It gets tiring. That's all I'm saying, at least for me.

I know it is important to have intellectually compelling exchanges. But,
sometimes, just casual, polemic, pithy comments are entertaining.

  18. Unity my ass! (excuse the language)

The DNC orchestrated the attacks on HRC during the primaries. They sat back and watched as one candidate got accussed of doing everything negative by a colured media who assisted in the witch hunt.... All in favour of one candidate that they want as the representative of DNC (according to their standards)

DNC is now in the hands of an army that is willingly changing directions (immediately) and they have found their soulmate in BO.
But have your 15 minutes of fame (LOL)....time is on the hands of the American people...hopefully

Unity starts from scratch...and even we as adults can start uniting by trying to stay afloat in the midst of the media and the information society driving us in a different way. Everytime someone comes up with the unity garbage, I just have to laugh and say please stop this comedy. Not only have we as a country once again made a full mockery of our democracy for the entore world stage, we also drove further away from the high morals we stood for as a country...way...way... way back...in the days....

  19. As I said earlier: " Marketing is the art of getting people in the mood to be receptive"

And that is what DNC did during the primaries together with Howard W and BO, and what they are going to do more and more as we droft towards November.

Rember that BO didn´t even attend two entire important black events during the primaries...Why? He knew he had the AA´s in his pocket by using his colour against the other candidate....
Now he will use the I-have-a-dream date to his advantage and show the dream has come true in Denver.

Please.... A big F%&_# You to BO and his team.

Not only is he sending us as AA´s back to the pothole by using us as bait, but he is also making it quite easy to put a lid and a tag on all AA politicians in the future..

  20. Wow! Jason, you're fired up this morning. You go guy!!

Tuesday on CNN there was an attractive woman being interviewed who had been one of the major financial backers to the Hillary Clinton campaign. She was being grilled by the uber-liberal Anderson Cooper about when she was going to fall in line and rally for Obama. At one point, she replied, "I just don't like Obama." I thought that was a rather surprising, unscripted comment.

Then, one of the female CNN anchors said, "The Hillary women want to be
wooed back and they don't feel Camp Obama is doing that."

Posted by: prof marcia Author Profile Page | July 9, 2008 5:04 AM

  21. You know Marchia,
The problem for me is not falling in line. No one can wooo me back to BO. It will not happen. Because this was a near perfect execution of a plan made by BO and DNC. Do read. "NEAR"

That is why I say: unity my ass..
Come on people, wake up, this is scripted. Why is America always going for an underdog or the one they feel some kind of sympathy for? We need to go with the guy, girl, group that has the proven track record. During Idols we vote the underdog, In Politics we do the same, In sports we also get teary eyed and pull for the sad one.....What is wrong withn this picture

But once again, we failed, as a country...pfffffff as a nation. It is sad.
Last week , while at Wimbledon, I met up with some of my study buddies who chose the UK to finish their dissertation, and we all were just angered by the primaries. The nice thing was: we were all men. 5 in total, 4 whites and 1 black...And we all had the same conclusion: We will (except 1) sit this thing out.
One guy who is a repub said: it is a shame, that it has come to this, but actually there is no turning back.

Anderson should put a sock in it. Maybe it is time for him to take the skeletons out of his ugly closet...he did a great disservice to this country by demeaning HRC on April 3rd....

sounds rather patronizing. But, I do want to be treated with respect for my

  23. Good morning everyone! I just love checking in here before my day begins.

Craig -- Congress has always polled low. It's downright
un-American to say that Congress is doing a great job. Remember the saying, "Congress is in recess, so the country is safe." However, if you ask the people in the individual districts they will always vouch for their own representative. "Oh yeah, the Congress is crooked and meddlesome. But my guy, well, he's alright. I met him at the pig roast. " This can be modified based on the subject's political party, and their own activism, but by and large, most people like their own Congressman. If that's weren't the case, then the House would be completely flipping every two years.

Posted by: Alicia Knight Author Profile Page | July 9, 2008 7:05 AM

  24. Marcia -- I with you on the wooing, which is *slightly* patronizing. Tomorrow, Barack Obama will be attempting to do some major wooing in Fairfax County, VA. He's going to hold a town hall forum at 1:00 in the afternoon on a workday on the subject of "Economic Security For America's Women."

Okaaayyyyy... wouldn't most women who are concerned for the economic security will be at *work* on a Thursday afternoon? I know that's where I will be.

Fairfax county is home to a large Muslim community. I wonder how many women in head scarves will be kept out of camera range.

I am interested in Obama consulting with Hillary Clinton about economic security and women. That's why I signed up for www.together4us.com We need to spread the word about this.

  25. Jason,

Your opinion about Barack and the black community is strange. Not only did the African American community SUPPORT him not attending those black events (The Tavis Smiley State of the Black Union being one), but they were politically sophisticated enough to understand that by attending, he would have fell right into the trap of being tagged as the "black candidate", just as ego maniac Tavis Smiley would have wanted. BTW, the blowback from Smiley's temper tantrum about Obama not attending? He's off the air on his main gig, the Tom Joyner Morning Show. The listeners turned on him. So what you've said doesn't even remotely congeal with the facts.

  28. You know, I come on this blog everyday and read the bitter anti Obama folks. How about this? Why don't we come to these conclusions? Those supporting Obama will be tens of millions. Those supporting McCain will be tens of millions. Those who decide to sit out this election, or write in Hillary's name, etc. are statistically insignificant.

So let's stop with "the people in my cirlce say they'll sit this one out" as being something that will make a difference. First, if you don't show up, no one will know, particularly in an election when voter registration is setting records.

If you want to argue the policies of McCain versus Obama, fine. But let's come back to earth. It's not only unrealistic to think that your bitterness over the primary is going to make a difference, but it's also starting to get boring. Hell, even the insults over the said bitterness is getting tired.

I do wish it would happen more often than it does..... I heard on the Boston news yesterday that John Kerry has his first primary opponent in years...... wouldn't it be great to have some of these long term big names get their butts handed to them in the upcoming primaries in Sept...... on both sides of the aisle..... but alas.... this is usually the lowest voter turnout election..... when I worked it, I always brought some knitting.....

gee..... I remember voting for McGovern and Dukakis.....

  32. Mr Democrat,

    Well thanks for reacting....

But I have to say, I totally disagree with you.
BO ran a racial campign form the get go. I for a fact know, because both of my parents, and my sister campigned hard.
Some two / three months ago I posted some examples mostly with regard to the then NC primaries. I think most of you can remember..If not, please go back...If possible.

He ran a racial campaign because he needed the AA vote. When he knew he "HAD" (happening quickly after SC) the AA vote, he let go and went out campaigning and lobbying the white vote, all the while not letting go of keeping the AA community aware of the fact that the Clinton campaign was running a racial campign. This is not just MY opinion, but most of the independent media screemed about it. I, as a black man, know this for a fact...

By not showing up at the two important black ceremonies, he , and that is purely my opinion, showed disregard to the AA community...Disregerard at their past (think the MLK rememberance - no show) and the present (by opting to send his wife instead of himself showing up).

Your point is that, if he were there, he would be labeled as a black candidate. I am sorry to say Mr Democrat, but this statement in my eyes is not valid.
Will he for the rest of his liofe than not show up at AA seminars, or whatever because he is black and he not wants to be labaledas a black candidate? Is he a president of the white people, or all Americans?
he is about change right? So why keep doing it the old fashioned way...and being afraid to be labeled as..... So the man is afraid of being labeled as...instead of showing appreciation for a big part of your constituents?

He used his constitutents (AA) by telling them that this isit for us. I f we don´t vote for him we will never ever have a viable black candidate for president....The genious that his campign was, these statements were never made on big stages, but by the peeps knocking on doors. he freighted some of the AA´s (most of them) and they fell for it. I have to say, I can feel that...

Come on, Tavis Smiley??? No, we can do better than that.

All I say is that, he ran the campign of race..and it worked for him. Now he will portary himself as the I-Have-A-Dream man...when the dram he has is all but his own

  33. Watched the Obama family on NBC yesterday; they're nice.

I'm trying to think when it was okay parading little kids in front of the press much less letting them dialog with that august body.

It may be fine for now. But, what happens when the older one does those teenage things and gets caught (as did Mr Bush's daughters)? Will we then have selective availability? Like, parading them out when it works politically, but keeping them under wraps when that works?

And, when the kids are older, what happens when the press decides to camp-out outside their high school waiting to find out who is holding hands with whom?

I believe the Obamas made a serious error in judgment.; everyone already knew they are a tremendously appealing family. They did their kids a disservice.

Excuse us, (once Hillary supporters) for daring to write our opinions since, according to you, we don't matter.

So, who appointed you the arbiter of what topics are addressed on this blog? Who annointed you the monitor of what subjects are worthy to be
discussed on Trail Mix? I'm sure Mr. Crawford did not.

You write that it's okay to debate the policies of McCain versus Obama, but
examining the travesty that happened during the primary because of a
mismanaged Democratic party is not okay with you. I have been a Democrat
all my life and I have every right to deconstruct DNC operations. Just as I
have every right to discuss my dissatisfaction with Obama, not out of bitterness, as you so snidely write, but out of concern for this country and
    its future.

If you're bored by certain comments and subject areas may I suggest you ignore them?

Because, I for one, am not going to stop posting my thoughts whether about Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama or anything else within the realm of good taste that strikes my fancy.

  53. Craig , nice post again.

I believe "most" Americans are taking a beak from the political scene...they are concerned about their own struggles, be it employment, upcoming tuitions, getting to work (gas prices) etc.

Excitement ( especially for "Change") will ramp up after the season of BBQs and little league. American will have the whole summer , to say to themselves, this economy sucks...and then the idea of new blood in the White House will be very appealing.

  54. Nope, you're strange because you guys actually don't know what to do without this bitterness. It's your life blood. Your reason for being. Coming on TM without it takes away your sense of identity. I wonder if for many of you, your lives are so twisted that this blog becomes an outlet for your frustrations. I remember reading, and I'm not using this as a way to hit at him personally, that Maxtrue said his life was a bit messed up and so he used this blog as an outlet. I think this reflects a lot of you. There's a certain sadness that touches a lot of your posts, something that I think even Craig has noticed. I would say that many of you could use some self reflection, but I doubt that a lot of you want to discover what you might find.

  56. I have no problem with the complaints about the primary process or the dislike of the democratic candidate. It gets old, but no big deal.
What I really wonder is: what could ever happen that might make these strong opinions (anti-Obama but not pro-McCain) change???

It would be great to have the support of these voters, and of coarse, I would be thrilled if their support went to Barack Obama...

It was difficult for me to switch my support....it took days.....back in February I wrote this:

    http://unlikelyburrito.blogspot.com/2008/02/stunned-myself.html

It might not be the same for the rest of the Hill supporter out there.....this is just from my perspective. I realized back then, that this race really moved me....I remain extremely proud of Hillary Clinton...but I know my personal dissatisfaction is mine to conquer.

    Have a great day everyone!

  63. mornin' all.

MD, I'm one of those ex-Hillary supporters who plans to vote for Obama. I have expressed to the folks here why I plan to do so, and they are free to accept all, some or none of my reasons as good enough to justify their doing the same. I completely respect their ability to make their own decisions about who they will vote for. Woo the BOWs back to Obama? Go ahead and try - it will be just more of Obama supporters misreading what Clinton's supporters want in a candidate. They don't want to be wooed or patronized, and no amount of that will win them over. And you can't woo someone "back" to some place they've never been.

And newsflash, in a close election, if 20% of the Dem voters who would have otherwise voted for the Dem candidate decide to abstain or to vote for someone else, even an irrelevant candidate, their votes will indeed be significant. With the whopping 2 point popular vote margin Gallup is reflecting now, that group could indeed be important, and could conceivably swing the election.

And actually addressing the thread's topic (for a change) I am not too harsh on the Dem congress for not passing legislation that will be vetoed when they don't have the votes to override (although my position has softened) - but I am harsh on the Dem leadership. They have capitulated to the WH on on every front and have by passing legislation it supports enabled a dunce to run our foreign policy into the sh*tter. At least (and I mean at VERY least) Reid has voted so that he could revive issues that were dead or were going the wrong way. Of course that has not come to anything, but he at least reserved the option. And bear in mind, it's the congress that people have given such a low rating to - not the democrats in congress. With Republicans marching lockstep behind the nutcase in chief, who would have expected anything else?

  66. My View: I Do Not Believe Obama On The FISA Capitulation Bill
By Big Tent Democrat, Section Legislation
Posted on Wed Jul 09, 2008 at 05:02:34 AM EST
But politics is disgusting. And pols do what they do. I remind Barack Obama of the words of Louis Brandeis:

Experience should teach us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when the government's purposes are beneficent. Men born to freedom are naturally alert to repel invasion of their liberty by evil-minded rulers. The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding.
They tell me Obama is a Constitutional scholar. I assume he is familiar with Brandeis' words. So no, I do not believe he believes this FISA Capitulation bill is good or even acceptable. I believe he is acting out of political calculation (and bad political calculation at that.) Indeed, if that is not the case, then his position is unacceptable and he is not fit to be President.
I do not believe Barack Obama. I will go further. I do not want to believe him. Because the alternative is worse. Because if Obama believes the BS he said about the FISA Capitulation bill, then he is not fit to be President. More . . .
If Barack Obama really believes this about the FISA Capitulation bill, then he is as dangerous as George W. Bush

I get tired of bitterness and move on theories......
I mean. I have moved on, but that doesn´t say that I should abandon my thought process! Only because I reference to specific objects makes me bitter?....LOL. Come on fella...ya know that is not only weak, but also sad.
The thing thay you people (and I am going ot talk now the way you describe us) are afraid of, is that the bruising and scratching that was induced by the BO campaign, some of it´s afilliates (being the media) and bloggers and posters, will not be healed by a nice round of applause for HRC at a unity meeting.

Bro, this is NOT about HRC.
    You know what this is?
This is about our country and every next candidate that comes after this monstrosity.
It is about our future, and the way we will conduct elections.....Think for a second.

    Posted by: Jason | July 9, 2008 9:44 AM

  69. I guess, I have decided that there really is a chance for change.....and I don't think for one minute that one man Barack Obama, is going to wave his hand and there will be change.

What I believe is that if those who support him, want change, and those who are new to voting want change, then there is a real possibility that they in turn will work for change in their own lives... If that happens,( I think the country is ripe for that) we have the opportunity for progress.

If people believe that their , small improvements, in their own lives....will make a difference they are more inclined to follow through.

All indications are pointing that way....

It is worth the effort- we have to get out of this mess...and each person has to do their individual part.

    okay...stepping down....from my box..... : )

  77. Hey Jason,

I doubt that any Obama supporters, at least on this blog, are doing any type of wooing. This blog is a pretty unrealistic slice of what's happening in the world. Instead, this is almost like a version of talk radio, where "Crazy Patsi from Tupulo" calls in each week to state her wacky opinions. I'm just saying that the whole "I hate Obama" thing is getting tired. Saying it a million times isn't going to make someone say, "well you know, dammit I hate him too!" Just like if someone was doing the same thing with McCain. I'm just saying that it gets old. But I recognize that some on this blog need that POV to feel whatever importance they get from this blog. I'm just wondering, whether people agree with my politics or not, if others are feeling the same way?

Posted by: Mr. Democrat | July 9, 2008 9:54 AM

  78. MD, what you know about Patsi is little indeed, and what you don't know would fill volumes. Talk about bitter, talk about vitriol, you could have written the book on the subject. You played the role of thoroughly nasty bastard on this site for months, and now when you see disappointment and disaffection with your candidate, you interpret it as the same hate you spread, and somehow it's not OK now. Say what you will, post what you will, but you are what you are. You might try convincing people that Obama's positions are something they can endorse and McCain's are unacceptable for our country instead of demeaning them. Tends to be more persuasive in my experience (and newsflash, the BOWs aren't scared of seeing Roe v. Wade overturned).

  79. that "yeah, but" was for Corey, with whom I kinda mostly totally agree.....

    Posted by: sturgeone | July 9, 2008 9:55 AM

  80. I think people come here for all the same reasons... to share our thoughts, our feelings, our optimism, pessimism, our joy, our anger.. you name it. If a lot of Hillary supporters feel they do not want to, or cannot support Barack Obama, that is legitimate for them. I am supporting Barack Obama now (and I think he's a good person), but my passion remains with Hillary. I don't diss any other bloggers here because they haven't joined Team Obama. I'm voting on what I perceive as "practicality politics"... with the DEMS we have a chance of significant, positive change in this country. If the Repugs win we will see more of the sh*t Bush/Cheney and Co. have brought us in these 8 long years.

Like I said a long time ago, I'd vote for an oversized Nutella Jar if I thought it would get the Repugs out of the White House.

    But hey, that's just me....

I can understand that, sturge. I've long said that if the polls show a tight race in TN, then I'll vote for the Dem candidate instead of a write-in. But I don't see that happening.

Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | July 9, 2008 9:58 AM

  83. UB....
I agree that each individual has to do their part to bring about change....
I honestly believe that change does not happen with our government, but with "we the people".....

any big changes such as women getting the right to vote and civil rights was generated by individuals working hard to create a movement that forced the government to change....

you said above.... "those who support him (Obama) want change and those new to voting want change"..... am I to read into that statement that you think those of us who might not be voting for Obama don't want change?....

because, IMO..... nothing could be further from the truth.....

Posted by: Corey Author Profile Page | July 9, 2008 9:59 AM

  85. Why was FISA even brought to a vote?
from the comments section of the link previously posted:
"You have absolutely no idea beyond the superficial as to how legislative bodies actually operate, in particular the U.S. Senate.
Had Barack Obama -- who, after all, is the prospective Democratic presidential nominee -- merely bothered to tell his Senate Democratic colleagues that he would oppose the measure, it never would have gone to the Senate floor. Period. Once he gave the green light, only the highly principled failed to fall into line.

As it stands, Obama's action can be described at best as politically craven and manipulative. And quite frankly, I've had more than a belly full of that sort of patronizing bull$4it the past eight years. Further, I'm getting particularly tired of being told by the likes of people like you that I as a Democrat have nowhere else to go besides Obama, as though you consider my vote for the guy in the bag.

Therefore, you best understand this: independent Democrats like me don't have to go anywhere. While I will not vote for a Republican, I always reserve my option to leave my ballot blank, and Obama supporters such as yourself are now on notice that I will not allow my support and vote to be taken so cavalierly for granted.

BTD is absolutely right. If Obama truly believes his own bull$4it, he is not fit to serve in the White House in any capacity beyond that of parking valet. "

    Posted by: Lynn C | July 9, 2008 9:59 AM

  86. No Pogo. You've mistaken my comments for a person who cares if you all vote for Obama. I know you all have huge egos, but I don't care if you vote for Obama, vote for McCain, vote for Nader, vote for Barr or stay home and watch Oprah. I'm saying that you all are one note. You say the same things every day, all day. You talk about me, but you all spit out more insults each day than I EVER did back during the primary. And more than that, you haven't made an iota of an effort to change your attitudes. Instead, you bask in your collective sense of injustice. So again, don't worry about anyone trying to convince you about Obama policies. To try to do that would mean that we expect you to think about your decisions. That may be a bridge too far.

This may be wrong, but I firmly believe that Reid and Pelosi are afraid that if they are ridiculed by the white house - and remember, it's just Dumya and that twit Dana Perino who would be doing the ridiculing - as being soft on terror, it would hurt the chances of the Dems to increase their congressional margins. Their problem is let the WH set the agenda and they don't bargain from the position of strength they have with majorities in both houses, but rather react to the Chimp's pronouncements to the press. They don't apparently have sufficient strength in the Whip positions to overcome their tepid leadership. It's no wonder congress is viewed so dimly by the voters.

Last year we gave it its own holiday, and this year we’re continuing the tradition.

I disagree and explained why if you'd take a moment to actually read what I wrote before responding to it. And again, you use the particularly effective technique of insulting those who might actually provide support your candidate will need. "I'm saying that you all are one note." Better define who "you all" refers to. I for one am on my second note in this election, and still on the same side of the D/R continuum, and I know of at least one other person who's posted here this morning who is as well. The irony is that while I'll vote for Obama because he is IMO a better choice than McCain, in the end my vote won't matter because he has virtually no chance to win in WV. Sturg is likely the same in SC.

"Update: Sending Your Obama Money to Feingold
    Posted July 9, 2008 | 04:01 AM (EST)
Last night I posted a blog suggesting that Obama supporters who are angry about his about-face on the upcoming FISA legislation should take the money they would have given Obama this month and give it instead to Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI), who is carrying on the fight that Obama walked away from. Apparently the idea struck a chord. The Feingold campaign told me at midday that money was pouring in. Campaign manager George Aldrich was reluctant to give out precise numbers, but reported that the morning's donations were "not a little blip but a massive spike" up from the norm.

That's a big chunk of change that should have gone to Obama. Predictably, this infuriated many Obama supporters, but those of us who redirected our donations to Fiengold are Obama supporters too. My interest is not to derail Obama's campaign from within, but to keep a place at the table for his activist base now that the chairs are being reshuffled to accommodate the heavy hitters of national American politics. This is the point in presidential campaigns where activists usually get sent to the kitchen to eat with the staff. But maybe with this new tool we have in the Internet, we can hold on to our seat in the dining room. "

you stated the other day that your dad is coming home and that your mother is not happy about it....

she may not like having him at home..... but even a moderate stay in a nursing home can leave the surviving spouse impoverished....

I had my eyes opened to this when my dad went temporarily into a nursing home winter before last..... when I enquired as to how to get him on Medicaid if he needed to stay there permanently, I was shocked with the answer....

it turns out that the surviving spouse has to "spend down" their assets and life savings in order for the other spouse to qualify for Medicaid....
I was told..... they can't take your mother's house or her car..... but any other assets (such as stocks, bonds, or any other investments) she had to sell..... she could only leave $2,500 in the bank and couldn't make above a certain income.....

in short..... when they say that one must be impoverished to be eligible for Medicaid..... they mean it....
your mother is definitely better off financially with your dad at home....

I don’t expect boozing, etc. from the Obama girls. The Bush girls were too much like Daddy. You can tell when the older Obama daughter talks that she is a smart one, and I believe the Obamas have limits set for their children, unlike the Bushes. I noticed when Michelle said something about ice cream later, and the older one said “we’re getting ice cream”, as if that was an unusual treat. 158. Gallup: Obama Leads McCain By A Hair In Potentially Ominous July Polling
    July 9th, 2008 by JOE GANDELMAN, Editor-In-Chief

The tepid good news from Gallup for Democratic Presidential presumptive nominee Senator Barack Obama is that he still leads Republican Presidential presumptive nominee Senator John McCain but by a hair — 46 to 44 percent, indicating a race that is now getting closer.

The bad news from Gallup is that the candidate who leads in July has in many cases — particularly in most recent political history — lost the general election.

But the truly bad news for Obama which Gallup doesn’t note is that in a time with soaring gas prices, signs that the economy should immediately check into an Urgent Care facility, and President George Bush’s numbers perhaps now ranked below that of salmonella, Obama is now part of polling that shows a sharply divided and polarized electorate. As Obama himself comes under fire for moving to the center (which he denies he’s doing) and some key Clinton supporters signal more interest in payback rather than supporting Obama for President, the Illinois Senator is seemingly stalled.

  163. Coreen,

Please, consider voting for Obama, because

    1. mccain is committed to a policy of voluntary corporate adherence to carbon emission guidelines to slow the increase in global warming.

Cutting away the obfuscatory verbiage, this policy proposes that we pollute our way out of the problem.

    2. mccain's statements following the SCOTUS rulings against the unlawful detensions and torturings of prisoners demonstrates that he sees presidential power as unlimited by Constitution, Amendment, or Statute. He'll do things his way.

    3. mccain is squishy-soft on human trafficking, the modern slave trade, a business that turns violence against women into money. He is also one of those Navy flyer lads who invented and passed on the shameful and violent Tailhook tradition.

    4. mccain's plan to stay in Iraq will cost $1000 per American per year "for a century." He proposes to coupled this profligacy with lower taxes for the wealthiest caste. The result will be continued massive borrowing at ever higher interest rates, cheapening the dollar, and thus cheating creditors out of the value due to them. This is called inflation, and it will make anything you purchase from a foreign source far more expensive.

If you are ever going to purchase something made in China, Japan, or Germany, you owe it to yourself to vote for Obama.

Posted by: xrepublican Author Profile Page | July 9, 2008 11:52 AM

  164. "The Obama self-Swiftboating comes from a month of decisions that, while perhaps better tuning the policy positions of the campaign to what is good, or true, or right, or even expedient, completely undermine Obama's signal virtue -- that he's different. We've handed the other side a string of examples that they will now use to argue (as Senator Graham did most effectively on Meet the Press) that Obama is nothing different, he's just another politician, and that even if you believe that McCain too is just another politician, between these two ordinary politicians, pick the one with the most experience.

The Obama campaign seems just blind to the fact that these flips eat away at the most important asset Obama has. It seems oblivious to the consequence of another election in which (many) Democrats aren't deeply motivated to vote (consequence: the GOP wins).

Instead, and weirdly, the campaign seems focused on the very last thing a campaign should be doing during a campaign -- governing. This is not a try-out. A campaign is not a dry run for running government. Yet policy wonks inside the campaign sputter policy that Obama listens to and follows, again, apparently oblivious to how following that advice, when inconsistent with the positions taken in the past, just reinforces the other side's campaign claim that Obama is just another calculating, unprincipled politician.

The best evidence that they don't get this is Telco Immunity. Obama said he would filibuster a FISA bill with Telco Immunity in it. He has now signaled he won't. When you talk to people close to the campaign about this, they say stuff like: "Come on, who really cares about that issue? Does anyone think the left is going to vote for McCain rather than Obama? This was a hard question. We tried to get it right. And anyway, the FISA compromise in the bill was a good one."

Hillary stated specifically she was not looking for reimbursement of her loans to her campaign - only contributions to pay off her vendors. And no comment by Craig when the comment was made that one of Hillary's supporters dissed the $100,000 raised so far for Hillary - I would have dissed it too - Obama can raise over $25 mil in a month and can only raise $100,000 for Hillary? Sounds like little or no effort to me. And as a Hillary supporter, I'm getting daily e-mails asking me to contribute to Obama. Not likely, until I see Obama AND his supporters treating Hillary AND her supporters with more respect. If you want unity, you have to walk the walk as well as talk the talk.

They prefer to accept on faith that the candidate or his campaign would not lie about such a thing, assuming he has nothing to hide and no motive to lie.

But until the certified paper birth document is produced -- either by media pressure or a legal challenge in any state -- the fact remains that Obama has not proven that he is a "natural born citizen" eligible to be President according to the Constitution. "

That's fine but I will only accept your position if you could say that had Hillary Clinton won the nomination and Obama supporters were making the same statements, you would be okay with it. I suspect there apoplectic anger directed to the Obamic"rats", or obama appeasers, traitors, etc. would be at a fever pitch already.

    Jason,

The whole point of politics is to first gain the support of the people most likely to vote for you and then branch out from there. I don't remember Hillary running as the women's candidate. Obama didn't start running as the black candidate. He didn't start winning the black vote until South Carolina. This happened only because he won in Iowa and run strong in New Hampshire. So I disagree with your premise that Obama ran just a racial campaign. Had he done so from the start he would have lost.

Also remember that the Clinton campaign was foolish enough to put themselves in a position to look bad in front of the Black Community. Interpret how you want Pres. Clinton's comments after the SC results but that was his Wife's Dukakis in the tank moment.

The I see how this campaign has digressed already, the more I'm convinced that being a voter today is like going to a strip club.

You pay a price just to get in the door.
You have a lot of people working the room and the more money you show, the more attention you get.
The good ones lead you to believe that they really like you.
The better ones lead you to think you can take them home.
You don't realize they aren't what they seem...
Ultimately, the only thing they are going home with is your money.

  177. Bear.... funny.... I noticed a lot of humor in here this morning....

heard an excellent program on Diane Rehm's second hour with guest David Sirota who wrote a book entitled "The Uprising".... he's a self labeled progressive and the book is about how frustrated Republicans and Democrats could lay the ground work for a new populist movement.....

one of the more interesting things he said (at least to me)... was that a populist movement could just as easily come from the right as well as the left..... and that historically, the left usually failed to see it coming.....

one more book I'd love to have in my "to read" pile.....

The ironic thing about your last post is that if it was the McCain of 2000, he would win going away. Just like when Bush ran in 1988 or 1992. If it was the Bush of 1980, he would have won easily. In both cases, you had fiscal but common sense conservatives who were more moderate on most social issues.

Once they decided that they wanted to be president, they started to parrot the right wing mantra and thus we have what we have.

Vietnamese, Thai, and Cambodians all load down their food with chiles.
I've noticed that chinese restuarants are good at adapting to local conditions.
When the Vietnamese boat people were turned loose in northern Arkansaw in the late 80's many of them migrated north to Springfield MO. Over night every geasey burger drivein turned into a Chinese restaurant.
They created a dish just for the local taste. It was called Cashew chicken but unlike any cashew chicken I've ever seen anywhere else. Deep fried chunks of chicken on a bed of rice, smothered with a brown sauce garnished with cashews and chopped green onions.
Meat and gravy just like Ozarkers like it and they sold a ton of it.

  212. Did anyone else catch the preliminary FISA votes this morning? More interesting than the vote (all the amendments failed, quite miserably) was the Clinton - Obama drama.
Hillary hung out on the Senate floor for the duration -- chatting with this and that group of Senators and playing with her hair in a way I have never seen her do before.
Obama came and went, occasionally surrounded by one group or another of male Senate colleagues. Not once did he approach Sen Clinton, nor greet her, even though the place where she was standing required that he pass her on his way in and out of the chamber.

BTW, 98 senators were present -- one amendment garnered 42 votes, the others less than 35.
The back story on why the Dems "caved" and held the vote is that the Blue Dogs in the House were collecting signatures to bring the original version up under a suspension of the rules.

LOL at the food discussion - We've got 2 Mexican restaurants here (not including Taco Hell, of course), 2 chinese restaurants and one Japanese rest. The Japanese rest. is the best BY FAR, although the Mexican restaurants are both good in their own ways. The chinese restaurants absolutely suck except for a few of the fresh dishes one of them has, but it is such a hole that you feel as if you need to shower when you leave. The other chinese restaurant is primarily a buffet - with 6 double sided 12 foot long buffet tables, yep that's 144 running feet of mediocre and worse chinese-like and american food. Oddly enough it has a good Mongolian grill and some very good sushi. And yes, they have cashew chicken and no egg foo yung. The kids love it as much as they love CiCi's for pizza. The wierd thing is that there is no decent Barbeque or fried chickekn to be found here. Goes to show that no matter how many confederate battle flags they have on their pickup trucks, WV ain't really part of the south.

I have a better story for you.

My mother grew up in a small town in Haiti. Down the street from her was a woman who had a raging drunk for a husband. He was a beater as well.

One night he came home and complained that there were too many beans in his rice. He beat her badly enough to break her nose and jaw. She waited for him to fall asleep and proceed to fill up her largest pot with water and oil. She brought it to a boil and proceed to dump the entire pot on his genitals. My mom could hear the scream down the street.

The husband had everything amputated that night. He died a couple of weeks later from the severe infection that he developed from the initial wound.

The only excuse I have is: I must have been drunk the day the FEC appointments came out. I missed it completely.

Just a side note, the birth certificate story has an FEC connection to it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Isn't this convenient for those running for president? All three are "Senators", and all three know no effective FEC can act against them. Thus Barack Obama brazenly refuses to show his birth certificate, claiming to have been born in Honolulu, when the evidence indicates that he was actually born in Kenya and in fact is an illegal alien, having served illegally as a U.S. Senator. John McCain brazenly held a fund raising event March 20, 2008 in London's "Spencer House", sponsored by Lord Rothschild and Nathaniel Rothschild (see "The Guardian-London April 29, 2008). Hillary Clinton, not to be out done has also accepted illegal foreign contributions from Sir Elton John, Illegally, because he is a foreign national.

If you want to vote for a respectable, legal contender for president you have two choices. You can vote for Bob Barr a Libertarian, or you can write in "Ron Paul".

  251. Jack: Fruit vinaigrette dressings can be delightful. I have to admit I've not done one with blueberries yet (I was thinking of the color requirements for the Democratic convention) but I've done all the citruses, of course (try tangerine vinaigrette on a bulgar wheat salad with appropriate veggies) as well as raspberry, pomegranate (particularly good with field greens, sweet and hot pecans and stilton, peach, and apricot ... the trick is that the salad needs to feature bitter greens ... such as watercress, arugula, frisee as well as some sort of crunch ...

The skin will slip off the beet , slice into the serving bowl and add several pats of butter, salt and serve. Take the stems or as we always called them the beet tops and add vinegar to serve as a seperate dish.
I will eat beets pickled but seems like a waste to me.

"In the United States, most states have wild parsnip on their list of noxious weeds or invasive species."

I'm sure there are those who would say cultivated parsnips are wonderful. I don't really plan to explore their contention.

  265. pogo: Your story reminds me of the time my daughter stayed over for dinner at a friends home. They had home-made soup for dinner, and the Mom told me that my daughter had loved it and asked for seconds. The ingredients included rutabaga, parsnips and cabbage. Rather amazed, I asked my daughter when she got home if she had really enjoyed the soup and she said no, she hated it. So then why did you ask for seconds, "I didn't want to be impolite," she responded.

As mothers will I couldn't help but wonder why she never hesitated to be impolite about the meals she didn't like at home.

  267. My first run in with fresh Cilantro was in the *0'saco Bell did a brief experiment with a salsa bar Then they did a 39 cent taco nights. We used to get off of work and go to taco bell and pigout. We may have been the reason they ended the salsa bar.. Any way I bit into a taco and thought they had spilt their countertop cleaner on it, it was that strong and nasty tasting. It took me a couple of time to realise it was the fresh salsa with cilantro that I was tasting. Avoid it and the problem went away.
Now that I know about it I can avoid it or tolerate it in small amounts.

Posted by: Bear Author Profile Page | July 9, 2008 5:59 PM

Posted by: Mr. Democrat | July 9, 2008 9:29 AM

You're such an ass, dude. It was me who said that this blog was a welcome distraction, not an 'outlet for my frustration'; but way to twist words to suit your own purpose. Your amateur-ish psychoanalysis serves not to force introspection but to illustrate your own megalomania. Politics is all about dissatisfaction and bitterness, expect some of it to be expressed in a political forum. It's wonderful you are such an evolved and insightful individual that you are immune to such emotions. Maybe you could have me over for tea and share the secret to your enlightenment.

I also think Ralph Nader is a great write-in option; no one on the national political scene has done more for his fellow citizens than Ralph Nader. Rather it is Article Two, Section One of the Constitution which requires that the President be a "natural born citizen" and not simply a naturalized citizen. The issue is whether there is proof that Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961, the legal status of his mother at the time, and what exactly is written on the original birth certificate -- if it in fact such a certificate exists."

I'm surprised that you don't like borscht. But, food preference is all a matter
of taste (LOL). I just thought I'd mention that there are various ways that
beets can be cooked that might appeal to someone who may not otherwise
    like them.

It's funny you don't like Jewish types of food, since one of the reasons
I think I married my husband was that his relatives cooked such tasty Jewish
dinners. I loved the various Jewish holidays since it meant that there would
be all sorts of traditional dishes that I could eat and learn how to cook.

  402. I think the notion that Obama's camp should help pay back HRC's debt is ridiculous. It's equally crazy to think that people - hard-working, average, everyday people - would actually give up their nickels and dimes to bail out a multi-millionaire, world famous senator when gas is at $4 and our economy is on the precipice of destruction...ah, but ain't that America.....

I don't mention Nazis every day, that's a lie. The manipulation of a populace, perfected by said party in the 1930's and early 40's is a relevant case study applicable to the Obama phenomenon witnessed today. If you don't agree with that, explain why.

Your dismissal of Ron Paul due to the affiliations of some of his supporters, and your rabid eagerness to tarnish his message with the same is indicative of your reluctance to debate and ponder with integrity, and is akin to the same disingenuousness for which we both chided Harold Ickes during and after the DRBC meeting at the end of May.

  410. Well gang, during the primary Hillary was blasted as being a Republican Lite and her supporters neocons, Republicans etc. At the Clinton blogs now purged many rational people explained why Clinton's positions were consistent and based on a long record of NSS reasoning. But NOOOOO - BO wielded that very Liberal sword and waxed Lefty as nutrooters like some here supported Obama's positions. That hawk Hillary and her sicko gang of miscreants. They quoted Kos and Huffington and spread their mantra far and wide hailing Obama their great new Mr. Magic. And when we said Obama would look funny pivoting to center having defeated Clinton steering Left, they laughed and said NEVER. Not their guy.

We have the record however. Left in Chicago, then Right to get to speak at the Democratic Convention with Lieberman Obama's mentor. Then his move Left again. Will Obama admit he is tacking Right again? Will he ever admit he has changed his position? Is he ever wrong? Did he do anything just to get elected?

I pity the yo yo defense the OBOTS have to keep coming up with. Not just Flip Flopping mind you, but yo yoing as a political driven opportunist drives back and forth. Honest? Nope. High Road? Nope. I wonder if Clinton supporters enjoy Obama pretending to brandish Hillary's centrist sword. He took it from her using the Left, stealing it while calling her unworthy to be the nominee. Just listen to her he mocked. How can you believe in that kind of change?

Sorry Bark, you are not worthy of belief. And your calculated contradiction will come back to haunt....Just like 9/11 said. An empty suit doing what politicans do. It kind of makes one realize howq much principle the Clntons HAVE. Lucky Barak is half black, Had Bill said what Obama did, Jackson would have called him a friggin racist. And these people were a large part of what got Obama the nomination. What a great bunch of friends....

  411. PofU: It has been noted that many Hillary supporters were older, working class people. While many of the Hillary supporters on this blog are well educated, that does not mean we are also well heeled. What I did give to Hillary I had to charge and I am still paying myself back. Her campaign got my new tires and I imagine I'm not the only one in that position.
Personally, I don't think the Obama supporters or even the Obama campaign "owe" Sen Clinton anything. On the other hand, since his campaign is so eagerly courting her upscale donors, it seems only fair that there should be some sort of quid pro quo.

  421. PofU: The thing about the campaign debt is that, although the Clintons have made a lot of money, one doesn't know how much money they actually have and remember that Hillary is only entitled to 50% of it. I got the feeling when she talked about "my money" that she was trying to use just the funds that came from her own efforts ... i.e. her book sales. So, one doesn't know how much money she has to pay off those debts.

It may be, however, that they are trying an experimental drug that has kept a physician with a similar condition alive and relatively well for two years now. In general, however, his condition is a death sentence. The fact that the tumor was not seen in October when he had his carotid artery surgery rather suggests that it is fairly aggressive which, at Sen Kennedy's age, is not a good thing.

  443. Well Britto one would have to define what Obama's positons really are. I disagree with numerous positons of McCain being center Left, but on critical isses Obama obviously doesn't know which way he is flipping.

And by voting Democratic and for McCain you split the ticket, divide government and have the best chance for bipartisan compromise. At the end of the day, Obama will be forced to stay in Iraq and support the victory that McCain helped produce along with Patraous. And just listen to Barak on Iran now. Sounds like Hillary unless you dig deeper.

PU, if you aren't prepared to discouss the litany of contradictory positons Obama has always played, then you are drinking the Kool Aid. A candidate is as good as his honesty and word. Go to the link and read the hostory on Obama and Iran. Read what he siad in 2004. Obama is playing a game and THAT is so far from his sales pitch, it is shocking.

Perhaps you can identify something original from Obama that he hasn't fliiped on. His claim to fame is community organizer. And his position on the 2nd is refuted by his own handwriting next to the yes on a question, "Do you support a total gun ban?" And FISA, he used an opposite position to bash Hillary while the media didn't mention HIS VOTING RECORD. So if these things escape you, perhaps you have been drinking without even knowing.

  458. Maggie, at the end of the day it was media and Left. Obama played to the situation and went Left around Hillary. So I think when history looks back, Hillary stood her more centrist ground, was more honest about what she felt was necessary -The Clnton Referendum. Obama used that against her with media help and activists. Obama played his cards including race. Now you can attribute whatever to Axlerod, but Hillary was swimming up stream with anti-war sentiment and watch the phony Obama now as he meets Patraous.

Hillary was blocking center and Right, so Obama went Left which was always his tendency. Left is what is rampant now in the Democratic camp.

We shall see where this leads, Carter reduex? I sure hope not.

  460. Yeah, I know what you mean, tough act to follow. A pure shame.

But, consider this, what if, what if Barack Obama is to many Americas what JFK was to you?

Can you for a moment, think of the hope and joy they feel?

    It's worth a consideration.

  461. Max: I see some of the same warning signs ... the lack of knowledge / interest in how Washington really works, for instance.
The thing that bugs me is not that he is / was / might be on the left ... I could take that. It's that he changes his position and categorically states that he has not done so. At least McCain has the good grace to admit that he has changed positions on some issues ... and gives his reasons.

  464. I suggest you follow my link above. SF needs more comments with those having liberal sentiment. That is the thing that irks me too, though he more liberal notions are quite dangerous. Now is not the time to raise capital gains to 28% and soon corproate taxes will drive most away. No extraction of fossile fuels? Nad his inclinations stated during the primary on foreign policy are so absurd he is already swinging away from them, but no aknowledgment of "change". This is not change I can believe in.

  465. My point is that we need to fix our country, and that means we the people, need to fix ourselves....so if we can realize that and move forward the better for all of us....

I just see so much potential in an Obama Presidency.

I may be naive, but after 8 years of Bush, and his cronies , I see no reason they have earned the right to remain leaders of our country.

most of them should be in prison

  466. UB: I am pleased that Obama supporters feel a sense of hope and joy in their candidate. One would expect them to...and I certainly do not begrudge it at all. But I do not feel compelled to vote for someone because other people feel a sense of hope and joy about him.

  467. maggisd,

Wow. The matzos rubbed with garlic and eggs cooked in a skillet sound delicious.

    About Senator Kennedy's brain tumor:

My father just died from exactly the same cancer. He was given six months to
live. My mom just accepted the grim diagnosis but I went on the internet and became pro-active, trying to find out everything I could about cancerous brain tumors. I found a doctor who specialized in that area who was in Newport
Beach at Hoag hospital. He said he'd take my dad's case. He started my father on radiation treatment to shrink the tumor, then they operated, then
    drug therapy.

The fact is that most cancerous brain tumors in people over 65 are a death sentence. My dad's life was extended two years because he had the very
best medical treatment. So, Ted Kennedy probably will not last beyond two years, unfortunately. I hope he does stay alive longer, but it isn't statistically
    likely.

My dad never had any pain, though. He was just tired a lot.

  470. UB: Well, as things now look, Obama will probably win quite easily. So, I hope for the sake of the country that Obama is able to fulfill the potential you envision.

BTW, I hold no brief for the Bush/Cheney administration, but I believe it is hyperbolic to say they belong in prison. Cheney might be guilty of corruption (although the Halliburton/govt nexus existed well before his time), but I see no evidence that the President has done anything that would merit prison time. Impeachment...perhaps...but not prison.

  471. I believe Judical Watch List has five out of the ten most corrupt politicans as Democrats. I think Obama made the top ten. Democrats keep money in their Congressional freeezers......Dodd is a fine example too. And look what OBOTS sadi about Hillary.

Let's be balanced about this. Democrats and Republicans are pretty corrupt.

  473. Prof Marcia- all my babies were born @ Hoag

Magg - I too, am hoping for the best. No one person is perfect, but maybe just maybe, thing will change for the better. I mean that in a sincere way for every American, not just myself-

Many issues are not clear, okay most all issues are not clear...but goals are clear...and that is where I choose to focus....

if one life is better...... : )

    Thanks for the great conversation.....peace~

  474. Prof Marcia: Sorry to hear about your Dad. I know Hoag Hospital...a first-rate facility. The interesting thing about the brain is that it is the one organ that is not susceptible to pain.
I am pretty certain that Sen Kennedy has glioblastoma multiforme, pretty much fatal in anyone of any age. But, we can be certain that whatever treatment exists, he will get the best (at least I hope he does). My one hope for him is that, given where it is situated, that neither the treatment nor any subsequent tumor growth will rob him of his language ability...that would be just too sad.

did a little kissing in his fancy tour bus--we only kissed a bit, that's all I swear.
I was never a groupie, but I sort of wished I were. I interviewed a lot of famous band members.

The media keeps quoting this 23 million figure without bothering to mention that about half of that is money she loaned her campaign and has already said that she is responsible for those funds. The other thing they don't mention is that this paying off of the losers debt is tradition.

Nor do they mention that she is bringing a lot of pocket books to the general that have already paid the maximum in the primary. So any of his who can contribute to her will probably be more than matched by hers contributing to him.

The Obama crowd is making it sound like a demand that has never been heard of before. Just more of the holier than thou, make the clintons look bad crud from that camp.

    Posted by: Jamie | July 9, 2008 10:39 PM

    =================================

Jamie: I am aware that the loser usually pays off the debt and that half of that amount she has already loaned the campaign. However, this year it has turned into such a media "drama" that it would be better for her (from a PR perspective) to just say, "I am going to take care of the debt so we can move on to the General without this distraction." Or, just simply to go quietly back to her donors to help pay off the debt. I agree with you: The Obama camp is turning this into a media story for reasons that are beyond me (well...I think I know...to make Obama look magnanimous over something that has been turnkey in the past.)

Again...just my opinion. Easy to say when it's not my money! My husband and I would be more than happy to help her pay off the debt but we are both maxed out donors!
