  1. Obama and Clinton plan first rally together.
"Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton will hold their first joint public rally next Friday - a day after the former rivals are due to appear at a Washington fundraiser. .....the event would take place in a "battleground state" that has yet to be determined.

Obama, speaking in Florida Friday, praised Clinton effusively - while offering an unusually frank assessment of how Republicans might use the issue of race in the general election."

"The Illinois senator was in a decidedly bury-the-hatchet mood Friday."

  4. Democracy Hijacked

"The concept of democracy has since been hijacked. In the 2008 race for the White House, the Democrat candidate with the most popular support is Hillary Clinton. But somehow, the DNC nominee is Barack Hussein Obama. Not so long ago, this could not have been defined as democracy in action. It would have been rightfully referred to as the “hijacking” of a party nomination. "

I love the idea of Biden. But I am also a little surprised at the bottoming out of Edwards.

  10. "I do consider him authentic in his honesty though."

Sheila, Here I have to disagree simply because of his wording on two separate statements that proved him to be a liar.

He made no denial when Bill Clinton said, "He told me in person he would not endorse Sen. Obama".

He then followed this by saying, "I told him I would not endorse Sen. Clinton".

It is one of those denying a lie while lying and proved that he deserves some little backwater in tucumcarie, NM and political oblivion.

  15. Webb sides with McCain on drilling

"Maybe Jim Webb doesn’t want to be Barack Obama’s running mate. While the Democratic nominee continues to insist on a no-drilling policy on the outer continental shelf, Virginia’s freshman Senator has put his name on a bill that would allow states to make that determination for themselves. In doing so, he’s arguing for the approach favored by Obama’s rival:" John McCain.

"It certainly seems odd that Webb would choose this moment to publicly oppose his party’s nominee on a big issue in the general election..."

  17. Speaking of lies without lying. The President made the statement that drilling in ANWR would "replace all of the oil imported from Saudi Arabia in 10 years".

He neglected a small detail. We currently only get 4% of our oil from Saudi Arabia and that could be replaced at any time by the same import quantity from South America. This on top of the fact that it would be a decade before ANWR oil would reach the market.

Lots of expense and no rewards except for the oil companies who should be transitioning to being "energy" companies NOW.

  20. Chloe,

Webb is just following his constituents. Who are more moderate or conservativ leaning. Its coming up on election year too.

He said very strongly that he didn't want the VEEP about a month ago. Said he wanted to stay a Senator a while longer. I'm sure he meant it. Webb does have a rather bad cloud of gray area on Sexism that would have come up to bite both men.

Besides, most average Joes don't care what kind of impact drilling all the oil out off the planet will have in the environment. They are scared right now because they can't afford to go to work.

The Republicans are going to make false promises and make it very hard for even Obama to keep his stand until November. But I am wililng to bet that He will and make a good argument of it.

  23. With regard to drilling v not drilling ... I continue to believe that a push toward massive numbers of hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles, and hybrid plug-in (with appropriate tax credits for purchasers) would be the least expensive, most environmentally friendly, and fastest way to wean ourselves off oil imports.
The real question we need to ask ourselves is not where does the oil come from, but what use do we make of it? Overwhelmingly we use oil for transportation ...

  25. Here is a good site with information about plug-in hybrids, along with other information about oil usage.

    http://www.calcars.org/vehicles.html

The writers here state that only 3% of our national electrical grid depends upon oil -- so, while renewable energy sources for electrical power are good in the fight to reverse global climate change, they will do little to reduce our dependence upon oil unless we sharply reduce our transportation consumption of gasoline.

  26. You are absolutely correct that efficiency is the quickest bang for the buck. Getting all those rigs on-line when oil is found takes time.
Oil is sold on the spot market, and the potential US capacity won't change the world supply much, hence won't change the price of oil much.
Oil companies want "cheap" oil, i.e., where the probability of finding oil is highest. This is currently not on leases they currently own.

The truth is we don't have the least idea whether there would be sufficient oil in any of these places. T Boone Pickens doubts the claims made for ANWR because the geology there is different from that of Prudhoe Bay (did I spell that correctly?). And, most of the leases in the Gulf haven't even been explored.
I suspect political scamming on both sides of the argument.

  30. "not where does the oil come from, but what use do we make of it?"

The major way to reduce the price is to reduce demand. Oil is used for many things other than energy. If everyone could do something as simple as avoid anything that is packaged in an oil derivative plastic. it would increase supply available for energy.

  38. Jamie: I am fully in support of putting solar panels everywhere we can, as well as wind energy, etc. We must do these things in order to save the planet.

But none of those moves would effectively dent our oil usage, since only 3% of electrical power is generated using oil (except for backup generators).

BTW, along with trying to use fewer plastics, fertilizers, etc, we could plant trees. Another smallish thing that could have a big impact.
It's just that when I hear politicians talking about alternative energy sources as a remedy for our dependence on foreign oil, it makes me cringe. Alternative energy sources are a way to save the planet ... we can only solve our dependence on foreign oil by changing the way we get around.

  50. Glenn Greenwald on Obama and his FISA reversal.

The excuse that Obama's support for this bill is politically shrewd is -- even if accurate -- neither a defense of what he did nor a reason to refrain from loudly criticizing him for it. Actually, it's the opposite. It's precisely because Obama is calculating that he can -- without real consequence -- trample upon the political values of those who believe in the Constitution and the rule of law that it's necessary to do what one can to change that calculus. Telling Obama that you'll cheer for him no matter what he does, that you'll vest in him Blind Faith that anything he does is done with the purest of motives, ensures that he will continue to ignore you and your political interests

Personally, I have never understood the benefit of holding the telecoms responsible for what the government directed them to do, and I regard this as a red herring. Apparently Sen Obama plans to return to the Senate next week to try and strip the retroactive amnesty out of the bill.
The reason the Dems "caved" is because the blue dogs, in conjunction with the Republicans were gathering enough signatures to bring the Senate bill to the floor by petition.
My own belief is that there is nothing inherently dangerous in data collection and computer analysis of numbers and e-mail addresses ... these do not really constitute eavesdropping or spying.
The real questions for me are ... what happens to the data found to be benign--will the government keep it or dispose of it? How will we know who (what category of person) is being monitored? How can we be certain that the government won't move from data collection to actual eavesdropping without a warrant?

  56. OD:

I assume that is a reference that the Dems should have nominated HRC. But you are forgetting that the GOP would have painted her as a flip flopper on Iraq.

I think voters are willing to give pols a bit of slack for changing positions with respect to drilling, campaign finance, etc. - but if you are perceived to be flip flopping on the issue of war - you are dead meat. (See Kerry in 2004 and how McCain beat out Romney for the GOP nomination). So I think Obama was the safer choice since McCain will make Iraq front and center. If Hillary could not come up with a convincing answer to explain her vote in the Dem Primary - she would have had an even tougher time with general election voters.

Plus, I have always said that Obama's position of withdrawing within 16 months gives him a lot more flexibility than HRC's stance that withdrawals would begin within 60 days no matter what the generals on the ground say in Jan. '09.

(But I still like Hillary better than most of the names being thrown around for VP. I am looking forward to next Friday to see how they work together.)

These are my thoughts and why I have finally decided that following the presumptive Democratic nominee is in our best interest as a country, for our present and our future.

    FRIDAY, JUNE 20, 2008

Good morning... I have just read an article about this man who has put up an Obama attack site... http://ExposeObama.com/

"Ready to Attack Obama, if Some Money Arrives
    By Michael Luo
    New York Times

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — A Bible verse taped to a whiteboard in Floyd Brown’s office that he uses to track his efforts to attack Senator Barack Obama reads, “That is why for Christ’s sake I delight in weakness, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.”

Mr. Brown, 47, a 6-foot-6 bear of a man is perhaps best known for his involvement with the Willie Horton television advertisement that helped sink Michael S. Dukakis’s candidacy in 1988..."

    Full article on NYTimes: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/21/us/politics/21ads.html?ref=politics

This Mr. Brown calls himself a CHRISTIAN??? This sort of crap is one of the reasons I soured so much on politics and (among other reasons) decided to move to Europe. But as the old adage goes, "you can take the boy out of America, but you can't take America out of the boy". (adapted for this post).

What I mean to say is that I still care about my country, I still vote... I still hold frustration at what it has become and still hope what it can again be.

Mr. Brown has made it CLEAR to me -- my idea of writing in Hillary's name, while maybe nice for me, and others who do it, does not advance our country or our cause. Mr. Brown's hate has made me convinced that the only SANE thing to do is to vote for Barack Obama and that's what I am going to do.

Brown's style of hate and attack is what is going too far !! And we disappointed Hillary Clinton supporters need to see all that is at stake in this election... yes the Supreme Court, Global Warming, Health Care, Housing Crisis, Iraq War, Oil Crisis, Deficit Spending, Educational funding, Civil rights, pollution, investment in public transport, etc. etc... Add your issues to what is at stake in this election!!

We really don't need a third Bush term!

Flatus, it was great to see you follow that whole occurrence through from beginning to end. It's so hard to follow these things back to where they start. I hate it when the good guy ends up looking otherwise. (don't tell Craig I said that!)
Looks like a lot of work, but I carefully read every word you said. Thanks for taking the time.

  67. Just a note of expansion on one of Flatus's points: an important telecommunications lobbyist/lawyer orchestrated Obama's primary strategy right down to the areas in Texas where some people's votes count more than others. Now people seem surprised at his support for this FISA cave-in.

And that new O-Banana Republic "presidential" seal is troubling, to say the least.

But at this point I don't care much. I think we'll get a bought & paid-for president no matter who wins.

  72. "What problem do you have with the political operations div of the party being moved to Chicago for the election? Logistically it makes a lot of sense. We're playing to win flatus."

Trying to win and trying to consolidate power for the next 8-yrs, and perhaps longer, by geographically isolating mainstream and national level Democratic interests from the relocated nerve center of the party.

  73. Flatus I understand your viewpoints. I just feel, for myself personally, that I have to make my vote count in a way that removes the Republicans from power. I am still pissed at the DNC, but at this point I'd even vote for Kerry again had he been the nominee :-) ... the stakes are too high in my opinion.. for reasons already mentioned.

Just my humble opinion and now... off to bed

The last of the state quarters in the 50 state quarter series will be issued this year. That quarter will be in peoples pockets in October shortly before the election.

  92. I wish dnd was still around so we could discuss the Light Rail that Denver has, and is expanding out to more suburbs.
I did not even know Denver had Light Rail until Nightly News segged it this week.
For those who hate the foul diesel smell of buses, I totally empathize, but we must understand the positive impact buses have on commuting ,
Google employees ride wi-fi equipped buses to work in Mountain View...workers in The City ride out of the city on freeway lanes dedicated to buses, passing cars stuck in traffic like the wind.
It's a great way for the workers to ride out from say, The Mission District, aboard a dedicated work-bus ...have a bagel and a coffee, nap, whatever, do some work with the wi-fi at your call...it's a great thing!

Jamie probably knows about the Microsoft dedicated buses in Seattle, also wi-fi equipped, new, pleasant...quite a perk to work for Mr. Gates!
    http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/330745_msfttranspo07.html

Light Rail is my personal fave solution as it less bourgeois and more proletarian....not everyone works for a giant employee with dedicated buses, and for general transpo, light rail is the rock on which you can usually depend .

No sense reminiscing about how we HAD light rail over a hundred years ago in the form of interurban trains...it's great to see more places are incorporating light rail again, and it's equally good news to see where the giants are busing their workers in new, quiet, equipped mass transportation vehicles.

Imus asked Craig Crawford if he was going to watch the Super Bowl or some big pro sports event a while back, and Craig told Imus that he couldn't understand how people get all worked up over watching rich people , who they don't know, play sports for of the fan gets none .

I believe Craig was comparing elections to sports, and sort of saying politics have a much more direct effect on an individual.

I'm a sports nut, and I never bet on sports, but I take great enjoyment out of watching the great athletes compete.
I think the reason many prefer sports to politics is they feel helpless to influence politics, and they just don't care to spend a lot of time after a hard day working and caring for a family or whatever they do, to spend hours campaigning for a candidate they may not be all that ga-ga over.

For some, politics IS sport, of course. Personally, I have attended WAY more college & pro sports events than political rallies; I guess we all do what we are compelled to do.

  96. More and more corporations that are somewhat removed from light rail stations are running vans back and forth for their employees at the beginning and end of the day.

Many places out here in the west would require a couple of transfers in a combination of train and bus that make travel times impractical and the vans bridge the gap in service.

  97. Bethyboo,

I googled and found this page:
    http://www.mrslim.com/Products/technology.asp?TechnologyID=628292

Mitsubishi, the manufacturer, is a BIG reputable Japanese company. The information they have on their site is plausible and their approach seems reasonable.

The approach I would take is try to figure out who is the most reputable heating and air company that installs the things, verify their reputation with the BBB, invite them out for a site visit, ask for the names of a few satisfied customers, and then give those people a call.

Even though it's ductless, it is still a major project that will require building permits (most likely) and a check to verify that your utilities can handle the load.

I like their approach to solving a problem such as you are having. I might try it for my upstairs office.

  98. Gerald, I have the current Safari on my computer. I like it--a nice clean look and feel to it. Seems like nice integration with the search engines, and it runs well.

Will I use it instead of Firefox? No. But the main reason is not technology, but the amount of time and effort I have invested in mastering Firefox.

But, if I was having problems with my current browser installation, I would certainly give it a try.

"It's hardly news that Time Magazine's principal function is uncritically to amplify false claims from government officials, but this article by Massimo Calabresi -- entitled "Behind the Compromise on Spying" -- is such a masterpiece in spouting simplistic government propaganda and rank falsehoods that it is revealing on numerous levels. The article has only one purpose -- to depict the spying "compromise" as a brilliant and heroic centrist masterstroke by Nancy Pelosi to protect us from Terrorists while simultaneously preserving our liberties -- and it employs one factually false claim after the next to achieve this. Let's just take it piece by piece, beginning with the first passage:"

  108. A commenter on another post says it much better than I can:

"They say McCain reads the blogs, so here goes --

Senator McCain- Don't let the campaign kibbitzers muddle things up.

First and foremost, Sarah Palin shares your values. She killed the bridge to nowhere. Need we say more?

As for the politics, Sarah Palin transcends geography. Her constituency, like yours, goes beyond state lines.

She will get your ticket access to voters all over the country based on who she is and what she stands for. Because she's young, a woman, a mother with young kids, she will grab media attention more than any other potential candidate.

Gov. Palin also has a son in the active duty military. You have very wisely taken your son's service in Iraq off the table as a campaign talking point. That is and should be respected. But others can talk about it and reflect on what it means.

A McCain-Palin administration would be the first in memory which has family members in uniform during wartime from both the President and Vice President. That would be a powerful statement as to the importance of national service, especially in uniform.

Most importantly, any Vice President should be ready to step up and serve in the event she is needed. Frankly, who is really ever ready? Gov. Palin is as ready as anybody, she is a quick learner, and in her public career has exhibited the courage and decisiveness needed for a great leader.

Godspeed to you in your campaign and in making this important decision."
