Viewing Michelle, Part Two

| | Comments (353)

So let's try again. Many of those in the Comments section for this morning's post thought I had unfairly slammed Michelle Obama's appearance on "The View."

But my meaning was to point out that this rollout on one of televisions softest shows ended up with a media focus on what was being called a gaffe. The trouble lies in this whole business of the Obama camp signaling for days that her guest-hosting spot on "The View" would begin an effort to re-make her image with a softer hue.

First of all, political makeovers work best when you don't telegraph them to the media. If you want to change your image, just do it. Don't talk about how you're doing it. Otherwise, the news hounds go out of their way to trip you up.

Secondly, why did Obama's team even feel the need to adjust Mrs. Obama's image? Sure, her intellect and forthrightness might threaten to polarize voters, as Hillary Rodham Clinton did at the start of Bill Clinton's presidency. But that is who Michelle is - a tough, smart and serious political player.

Trying to turn Mrs. Obama into a neutral figure like Laura Bush just isn't going to work. If that really is the intention, there is much left to be done. I thought she seemed to be straining too hard to play along with the girl talk on "The View."

Bring back the hard hitting woman who fires up her husband's supporters. Let Michelle be Michelle.

I will say this about NH....

the demographics have changed quite a bit since I first moved here 30 yrs ago....
you probably wouldn't recognize it as "Live Free or Die" any longer....

lots of people pouring in from Massachusetts to live along the border because of lower housing prices and the promise of cheaper taxes....

and the lakes region and north country is now full of wealthier peoples from all over..... lots of condos and second homes owners.....

What is the opinion of Sununu as he runs for reelection against Shaheen? Has there been much talk about the phone bank scandal from the last race?

  21. Here's the bit about Typekey for Nick and any others:

    Nick

You use a recognizable name as someone who posts regularly and can be identified, so my gripe wasn't particularly directed at you.

If you would like a link which makes it possible for others to email you, connect to your blog if you have one and read a profile if you fill in the information plus the ease of signing in here without having to type every time, then you need to get a Typekey signature.

    http://www.typekey.com

Click on "register for free", establish your ID and then comeback here. Fill in the information of your chosen ID and password and then click on the "remember me". It will ask if Craig can have you email. Click yes.

If all works as it is supposed to, you will never have to sign in here again. It will just remember who you are and automatically put up your name with the little key.

Click on any of the blue keys and you will see what information the others have chosen to make visible to the rest of the people on the list.

  22. Re: MO true - they should not have leaked the make over business to the press. I believe if Michelle were to get the right type of "public image" make-over you would still be able to see her spunk, intelligence and personal style.

After-all it is her uniqueness and individuality that will attract people. We don't need a manufactured First Lady, but a little polishing is okay.

  23. ....as an Obama supporter...

I have heard Michelle Obama saying her husband is pathetic leaving his sock all over the bedroom and such....

I thought it was cute and very down to earth humanizing. She was trying to stop the Idolitry. Now if she said Pathetic again...big deal you guys.

Craig, I liked your post this time. Much more clear and consise. thanks!

  24. Craig -- you'll just have to get used to being called names like Lieberman and neocon and bashed as a traitor to Amerika if you ever criticize the Mighty O.

As I read some posts, especially xrep's, I am more convinced that what we have is the Bush supporter-type crowd now moving to Obama.

Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | June 19, 2008 2:36 PM

  25. Bear,
Nothing much on Sununu and the phone jamming, the race isn't really heating up yet. There is alot of chatter about going after Paul Hodes in my congressional district.

I think that Shaheen may have the edge, she was a very popular governor but she has a big weak spot, never solving the school funding issue up here. Many people are still unhappy about that.

McCain is still very popular in NH, I'm not hearing much support for Obama right now. Thinking back to my Trailspotting right before the January primary a big portion of the people at the Obama rally in Nashua, were out of staters, I remember all the Mass, Vermont, CT and New York plates in the parking lot.

  27. Regarding the Makeover, it reminds me of Sears trying to change its image. Anyone remember the "Softer Side Of Sears"? I do, but it didn't matter to me as long as they didn't screw up the Craftsman brand of tools.

    Posted by: Bowmanc | June 19, 2008 2:40 PM

  28. The reason Michelle Obama is getting a "makeover" is because of America's deeply-rooted anti-intellectualism and misogyny. Remember the backlash that ensued after Teresa Heinz Kerry greeted the Democratic convention attendees in five different languages? Or the "I suppose I could have stayed home and baked cookies" HRC firestorm? What Americans are comfortable with is the Laura Bush/Cindy McCain model of the vapid figureheads. They don't like eggheads (See: Al Gore), but even more then eggheads, many Americans (and nearly all Bible-thumping, repressive Republicans) still express a profound anxiety towards intelligent, savvy, independent women.

I'm sorry to see Michelle have go through this process, but if there's anybody who is aware of the power of image in politics, and its double-edged truth, it's Obama. Maybe one day we can have a first lady who isn't required to be cover material for Southern Living.

  29. I personally don't care whether she said pathetic or empathetic. Most men around here are pathetic, & very few empathetic. I would rather hear someone speaking their own mind, without trying so hard not to say the wrong thing. 34. Patsi, the stridency of the Obama campaign and the organized militancy of segments of Obama supporters, especially the younger crowd, really strikes me as being in the Republican mold, as well.

It is absolutely their privilege to organize in this manner. But, it's not my choice of style. And it puts me off from their candidate and the party organization it is creating.

I ran into that same feeling on the part of others right after 9/11. There was one shop that I went to almost every day that was run by Sikhs. They wouldn't let their grandfather, a beautiful old gentleman who always came to work with them before, leave the house for over a month. He wore the traditional all white costume with a turban and they were deathly afraid yahoos would hurt him even though they weren't moslems.

There were several stories of attacks in one community near Sacramento that had been settled by Moslems. In fact our loverly government arrested one family as suspicious (mistake cleared up after a few years incarceration).

That fear was very, very real.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | June 19, 2008 3:14 PM

  48. Craig

I wondered if that would happen. Rendell has taken himself out of the running but the virulence of the hatred towards Hillary by a large percentage of the Obama folks has been going on for months.

You go to some sites, and it isn't just verbal. It is the ugliest form of sexual assault, injury, torture and death threats. Look at how some of us who supported her here were treated, and that was mild compared to other places.

With all due respect, you don't honestly believe that every single person who voted for HRC wants her to be VP alongside Obama, do you? There's poll evidence out there that indicates that many of her supporters are moving towards Obama, and that many of them do not support a VP position.

His traitorous behavior began shortly before the SC primary when he jumped on the “Bill Clinton is a racist” bandwagon for highlighting that Obama’s claims regarding the Iraq War were simply a “fairy tale.”

...Guess who were some of the beneficiaries of his budgetary largesse?... CLOSE FAMILY MEMBERS ... Here we go: Clyburn got $784,000 for the design and planning of the African American Museum in Charleston. And one of the lead architects WAS? His NEPHEW! ... The same one for whom he had $145,000 set aside for a community center in 2005. Yep! This one is good, and another two-fer: Clyburn set aside $990,000 for a Wellness Center in 2003, and has appropriated $229,000 for this year.

... his daughter is the Marketing and Membership Director there! Next up, the South Sumter Resource Center. This year, it got $282,000. That is in addition to the $670,000 it has gotten in the past.

His sister-in-law is the Housing Coordinator for the Community Development Division.

  79. I had never watched "The View" and had to search for channel and time, but I watched it...for 22 minutes, then when MO started talking about panty hose vs. no panty hose, that was enough! I was convinced this was going to be a fluff piece and of no consequence whatsoever.
I was truly shocked to read these last two threads to find that something newsworthy came out of it. My thought is, how could any man stay with the show when the talk turned to sleveless dressed and no panty hose? C'mon! I can guarantee I will never watch that show again.

  109. I don't know what Michelle O said or didn't say on the View, nor do I care, but I do know that whenever people discuss the Obama's it must be viewed in CONTEXT. When MO says something that sounds like she listened intently to the sermons of the good Rev. Wright, {"mean country" & "proud for the first time"} are fine examples of Black Liberation Theology and such comments reflect her true feelings IMO. The Obama's are exemplary in their honesty and should be commended but instead their words are "cleaned up" from that messy bag of steaming CONTEXT used to explain away any and all controversial comments.

I think MO well suits BO and to their credit they have earned my ill opinion.

As a contrast, I am a Viet-Vet and I was ecstatic when Carter gave the amnesty...most of my fellows felt the same. "Time for healing..."

  125. Surprise!! *pops out from behind the bar at Crawford's Cafe* (remember that??? I was the one playing the piano!)

    1) Michelle Obama can be whoever she wants to be, it is only MY opinion of course, but when Hillary made those "I don't stay home baking cookies" comments, she might have been ripped by those R.E.A.L. women, but many many million women stood up and cheered when she said it! I hope MO (is that what we're calling her?) just stands up to everyone and tells 'em to.. well..you know!

    2) If you care AT ALL about whether Dems control the Whitehouse and the Legislature, keep one thing in mind. I frequent a messageboard that is adjacent to a 40+ chatroom I used to frequent. Many MANY chatters are/were from red states, and during the run-up to the Iraq war... well, there was just no reasoning with them. (They were also kind enough to tell me to butt the hell out, even though Dubya asked Canada to become part of that weird-ass Coalition of the Willing (3 nations!). My point is (and I do have one).. these same idjits are starting to post every vile anti-Obama email as fact (You know the ones.... he's Muslim, he's young and muslim, he's young, muslim and black, etc. etc. etc.) and if this is only a SLICE of Americana right now, you all better be voting DEM in November, cos those insane rep voters are going to elect ANOTHER president and congress!! HOLD yer nose if you have to but VOTE DEM!!

OK. I'm done. I'll get off the soap box. NEXT???

Now this one did make me perk up my ears though I didn't expect the guys to catch it. Her quote was something along the line of , "I have some high end things, but this is off the rack, only about a $100". It's nothing against her. She earns a six figure salary and should buy anything she likes, but from a political viewpoint might want to think about opening mouth and inserting foot.

I know some ladies out in the median family income land of $50,000 who haven't worn a $100 dress in their lifetime. May have sounded cheap to the ladies on the View, but Michele needs a walk about at Walmart.

I thought Hillary looked okay and understood that for a woman of mature years keeping that kind of schedule, she really needed clothes she could get into easily and into hair and make up fast. : -)

She has worn nice clothes since being first lady and probably well tailored and expensive, but she has never been a clothes horse or seemed to care about it that much.

    1) Why in the world would there be a need for the potential first wives to have a townhall????? It's a vote for president, not glee club.

    2) I don't think $100 is on the high end of the dress price scale. Have you SEEN the price of shoes lately? More than that!

    3) Craig? Pls tell Lardass Liberal that I have missed him. I have NOT missed snorting coffee out of my nose when I read his posts however!

oh, and Craig... you've taken a heapin helpin of crapola this primary cycle, and with a great deal of humour (notice the Canadian spelling). I now know why it is said that you never discuss religion or politics at parties. Makes yer stomach turn a bit, dont it?? :)

  160. Dog's Eye

My comment about Michelle had to do with her talking about $100 and "off the rack" in a purely political context. It had nothing to do with a criticism of her, what she was wearing, or how she looked. She looked great as she almost always does.

My comment had to do with this whole "image" thing the campaign seems to be doing with her and that some of the purple state residents (miners wives and such) to whom it might sound a little on the "elite" side which is the idea they are trying to avoid.

  161. Oh Ok, Thanks Patsi. So long ago. I was there the first day. If doesn't matter really but I can't remember you. Just remember you coming around and writing great things about your writing and Nashville every once in the while.

I tried to have these conversations with the person name Jackie who was the first name and who didn't stay to long. But Marisa and Madmustard. Kathy....what was that girls name who had the crush on Craig. Sophia?

I can't remember. There was a seriously crazy guy named Mark Mann. Very right wing and very loud on the computer. But I do remember looking forward to your writing, when you DID show up. You must have been writing a book then. ;0)

  162. If it's a fancy affair you would not want to show up in blue jeans would ya? Maybe today's generation could care less. Image is important to a candidate but you don;t wnt to go overboard. I thought Obama or Hillary went overboard on this one. Hillary was not much of a fancy dresser like Michelle is. Michelle is trying to push her image maybe over time that will change.

  163. My entry dropped some letters, I did not think Obama or Hillary went overboard.

Posted by: vadaryl Author Profile Page | June 19, 2008 7:15 PM

  164. Sheila - thanks for the answer to my question. You are correct in that there are always surprises which is why I never make up my mind until I have to . I change my opinion quite often and enjoy the experience. As to KO and Tweety, regardless of their reputations, I still wonder - they certainly did not treat Hillary and Obama the same way, and that makes me unsure. But until someone gives a pop quiz I have to pass, I'll hold off on forming my final opinion - which wouldn't effect anyone on this earth, so why even bother?

Harborwoman - I knew I'd get grief for something I said here, but would never have guessed it would be about what my comment re Tim Russert. I'm truly sorry I shook you up so badly.

You are correct that I haven't heard all of the talks he has given, but my comment was simple.
I did not say that he didn't talk about his mother.

""I never heard him mention his mother, wife, sister, or any other women."

"" It isn't sinful that he wrote about his dad, but not his mom. ""

It never occurred to me to speculate about what sins he might have been guily of. I think you were referring to the comment I made about Imus comparing Gwen Iffil and cleaning ladies in a way that IMO was meant to be insulting. I said Imus's sin was in trying to insult both. I stand by that.

""As I said, I find your efforts at making up stories about Tim Russert's life stunning. Your efforts are only wild speculation. I don't understand the impulse to try to know something you cannot know.''

I wasn't trying to make up stories about his life. I was trying to understand where he came from and what background framed his opinions. I knew and know little about him but he helped to influence the world I live in so I feel I have the right to know what framed his opinions - that's all. I wasn't trying to speculate, I was wondering. That process for me can be very long and tedious and ponderous, as anyone who has read any of my emails (even this one) can attest to.

""I don't understand the impulse to try to know something you cannot know."" Do you really mean that?

Once again I am truly sorry to have upset you so badly.
I try very hard not to be offensive, at the expense of being boring. I have found you to be a very nice and warm and generous person, kind and thoughtful. I hope you are not still upset.

  180. Has anybody been following this crazy Larry Sinclair event at the National Press Club yesterday. It's like a soap opra. The guy gets arrested after he spoke or near the end of him speaking. What makes it more interesting was who was behind him getting arrested. This guy is not out hiding anywhere. They could of done that weeks ago when he arrived in DC for the MI and FL decision. He went to the DNC announcing what he was going to do for a few days. Also how can this guy still be making such a fuss for this long. He is begging the media to get out there and prove him right or wrong. Does anyone in the media have the guts to put an end to this once and for all. I don't believe a word he is saying about Obama but I do agree with him that the media is not out checking this out. For Obama's sake he does not need this kind of person floating around for so long. Others may watch this and try to join this guy. Also waiting in the wings with this is the Rev. Manning, he was there when this guy got arrested. You can't make this up.

Julie...Lee didn't count on my list, since he was never a sitting U.S. prez. That's all I was ranking. The only one I got right was George Washington, ranked Number One.

Jamie proved me wrong on my speculation that Abraham Lincoln never was in the military. Turns out he was in a state militia in Indian wars.

  196. Just got off the phone with my sis in LA, who is furious at the politicization of the "gay marriage" issue there. Apparently the word is going out from gay rights advocacy organizations that gays should "tone it down" when they plan their ceremonies -- to avoid a backlash. What bullshit. Freakin' breeders get married at home plate in baseball stadiums, or jumping off bridges on bungee cords...but the image of a guy in a wedding dress, or whatever, is supposedly "too edgy"?

I'm sure the gay rights orgs are just being cynical and smart, and trying to keep the kooks away from the polls in November. But still.

Rented a house in Venice Beach, and are just going to hang out with each other and cook for four days. I can't wait. There are five sibs, four spouses/partners, three kids, two dogs, a cat and two birds. It's going to be a blast.

  201. Lard: It will be interesting to see how much of an issue it turns out to be. San Diego is pretty much a red county, but we have a very active gay community and one of the best Pride week-ends going (or so I've been told). All the public officials participate, as well as police and fire fighters. Our Republican Mayor supports gay marriage.
I really feel that that issue, as well as the abortion issue, are losing ground among all but the very rabid right wing voters. Too much other stuff to worry about.

And Arnold has the balls to stand up to W on emissions as well as offshore drilling.

Meanwhile, my governor here in Florida is selling us out. But mark my words, the dual McCain/Crist endorsement of offshore drilling here will backfire. I think it might be enough to cost McCain the state.

  216. Lard: I just don't get the whole drilling / no drilling argument at all. I really don't.
In the first place, the real problem is with our vehicles ... the electrical grid is only 3% petroleum-fueled....
IMHO, the only solution is to push the auto industry and the consumer into hybrids ASAP ... giving consumers a means-tested tax credit for at least one vehicle would be infinitely cheaper and more sensible than anything else we could do.
The reason that Arnold is stronger on this subject that Crist might be that he lives in Santa Monica and has likely suffered the curse of the So Cal beaches ... tar from the seepage from the old Santa Barbara offshore rigs...shut down but still leaking.

  217. Oh...and just to be clear: I support and honor our military from Joint Chiefs Of Staff level on down to the lowliest private. Hell, I'll even throw in a shout out to SecDef Gates.

And I'll also have the back of the CIA operatives and executives who were assured that rendition and waterboarding, etc., etc., etc. had the blessing of law...and were just doing their jobs.

But it's Bush, Cheney, Perle, Wolfowitz, Addington, Rumsfeld, Rove...and on and on...who are the war criminals who should be prosecuted after they leave office. Absolutely. It would not be a waste of time, and it would not be a distracting "look back." It would be making history right. They should be prosecuted.

Call me simplistic but I continue to feel that re-regulating the commodities futures markets (who ever heard of a 5% margin being a good idea?), and a huge WWII-type push into Hybrids / Hybrid plug ins would solve our problems in the shortest possible time.

The remark was made by someone at the hearings that Rumsfeld, John Yoo, David Addington, Alberto Gonzales (and a few others) should not plan any overseas trips in the near future, as they could quite easily be arrested if they went to Europe.

  224. You know, speaking of quilting, you can actually slice and dice the U.S. Constitution into triangular pieces that make an interesting applique on your "Unconstitutional War On Terror" spiral quilt. Just be careful that you don't soak the batting with water while it happens to be strapped over an innocent Iraqi farmer's head.

But now we have you tube and all these bloggers, Politico.com, mainstream media is still staying away from it like they would of done back then, maybe FOX might get intertested, there are more magazines out there that love this junk. So he has all these outlets to let lose on. But one way to put an end to it is check his story out. who is doing that?

I'm not all that great on economics, so I don't know if I follow it all...but the one thing that did stick with me from the recent testimony is that the commodities futures market only requires a 5% margin and the man who spoke to the issue said we could lower prices overnight if we would force them to comply with the regulations.

  250. yeah, no surprise about williams doing it sunday...NBC has to sort things out and run contracts through and the whole process will take longer than it took Scarbourough to land the Imus slot.
But, of course, it can't be williams...Nightly News anchor pays about $17 million per annum...MTP host may get $2 million to start , with ratings determining the final salary after a few years. I heard Russert made between $4 mil and $7 per year, but I did not research it.

  252. regarding Russert's salary, this was part of an exchange in the Scooter Libby hearings, when Russert was testifying. This is from SLATE's John Dickerson's story:

2:41 p.m.: Defense attorney Ted Wells begins cross-examining Russert. "Is it fair to say you're a valuable asset to the NBC network?" he asks. Russert, stone-faced, says, "I hope so." Next Wells asks if it's true that Meet the Press brings in more than $50 million in profits to NBC each year. (Russert isn't sure, but it sounds plausible.) Then Wells asks if it's true that Russert's salary is more than $5 million a year. This meets with an instant objection from Fitzgerald, and Russert doesn't have to answer. (The figure, true or not, certainly has a "chilling effect" on the lesser-paid reporters filling the courtroom.)

    Bye train, Bye Bye

  312. Flatus,
there are only two trains now : McCain and Obama....you get to pick which one to take.

My suggestion, pick the one that has the better chance of going in the right direction.

    : )

  313. Gordo, I listen to that guy and he is a Obama supporter and if anybody has any questions on what he said he said email him with any questions. His address is right at the beginning of the tape. I thought he explained the polygraph exam pretty well.

  314. or stay at the station, there will be another train in FOUR years!

  315. UB,

Or I could just stay home waiting for the next go around.

No matter which train arrives first, there're going to be a bunch of disgruntled passengers who believe they didn't get the package they signed for.

  316. I know you said you would not respond any more on this subject but you just said something just now and I hope you respond to my question, who is accusing Obama of having anything to do with federal marshals arresting Sinclair? Was it that link the http://caosblog.com/8035 I did not go there and not sure if I want to. You might be interested in going to the link that Gordo sent, it's not a smear, as a matter of fact the guy talking is a Obama supporter, he sent money to Obama.

No online poll is accurate. They are interesting but they have absolutely no value or believability.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | June 19, 2008 11:14 PM

  319. Jamie,
I think they should have the roll call....I was just commenting that if they choose not to, for some reason...there is nothing we can do about it.

I like the traditional process....but I also liked Hillary....I lost.

    Posted by: unlikely_burrito Author Profile Page | June 19, 2008 11:18 PM

  320. I know polls are not accurate but at least this one is open to all of us instead of just a select few. Any poll can have just the people they want to have in it. It is fun to watch the media get all bent out of shape when the exit polls don't match the results and they try to explain it. This one does not match any of the major polls so far. It will be interesting to track it over the next few months and see if it continues. I do hope CNN, MSNBC, FOX, CBS, ABC have one running too. At least we all have a chance to respond. Maybe word can get out that they are running these and we can get a better sample of opinions.

  321. Was the 2008 Democratic Primary Election Fixed?

"The Democratic party overturned the election results.

Had Michigan and Florida both seated their delegates in full like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina did, and the delegates had been counted as the voters voted, then the results of the election would have been:

    Hillary Clinton 1,725 pledged delegates
    Barack Obama 1,707 pledged delegates

Hillary Clinton would have won the pledged delegate count by 18 delegates."

  322. No roll call and Will Rogers would never have been nominated and received votes as Oklahoma's favorite son. The traditions are fun. Why wipe them out of existence just to be pricks about it.

  323. What are the actual delegate counts now?

Posted by: vadaryl Author Profile Page | June 19, 2008 11:27 PM

  324. I think we will see a roll call.... it will add to the color of the whole race, and it will acknowledge the achievement of Hillary (first woman to earn so many votes in a primary) and they will use this is such a way .....that I could almost bet it will bring tears to the eyes of her supporters....then they will transition to the first Back American.....as the next President of the United States.

I bet it will all be very moving.

McCain 45 nuclear plants - okay (goal 100)

  330. I see on CNN they have Obama with 1763 pledged and Hillary with 1640. No way she gets over 100 pledged delegates if they counted FL & MI. I don't see how they had her winning by 18. Popular vote maybe.

  332. Bethyboo...

I'm sorry you interpreted my remarks last night as having been directed at you. There were actually quite a few posters who had spent a good part of the day speculating on why Tim Russert did or did not do a variety of things...mostly having to do with women, be they his mother, sisters, or other women. I found the exercise silly and said so. However, I was neither shaken up nor upset, just annoyed that a group of people who usually behave in an intelligent fashion were speculating wildly on the unknowable.

"I don't understand the impulse to try to know something you cannot know." While I understand your impulse to question this statement, I have to tell you that I mean it whole-heartedly in the context of my other words, which were meant to indicate that none of us gets to live the lives of others, nor do we get to know all of their motives or meanings. It is fruitless to speculate on why Tim Russert wrote about his father, but not his mother. The man simply chose to write a particular book on a particular topic. Buy it, read it and enjoy it if you wish, but don't pan the man for not writing the book you might have written.

Again, bethyboo, these words are not directed only at you. I didn't name names last night, and I won't now, but there were comments by a number of posters that ultimately led to my late night post regarding Tim Russert.

Imagine, what if - Obama wins

  338. Tony,
You can sit out if you want, but I like you to consider voting....at least you can express your feelings toward the choices at hand.

Might be voting for the lessor of two evils, but please consider voting, after all it is a right.....many don't have that right....at least consider.

The DNC is at fault and yes the rest of us will pay the price!! Hopefully in four years they will have changed the rules and become the Democratic party again.A party that counts all votes and doesn't select its nominee with Super Peaple!! What Shit

    Posted by: tonyb39 Author Profile Page | June 20, 2008 12:05 AM

  340. Unlikely -- HA! There's the rub. And as usual, that has pressed an unfortunate button, and I see I have gone on and on. Please read as far as you can. sorry.

For most people, at the end of the line I think it's an accumulation of things that helps make the decision.

I am horrified by our choices. One moment I think I just cannot vote for Obama, and then I say, okay, that means I'll vote for McCain.......and that leads to a primal scream.

I am hoping that from now to election day someone will do something to make either choice palatable. I may end up holding my nose, as TY suggested, but I do expect to vote.

I was 17yrs and 11.5 months old when JFK and Nixon ran. I was at college in middle Illinois and all the Chicago kids were laughing that Chicago would decide it. They didn't stay around to listen cuz they knew JFK had chicago. Now the machine is dabbling in my life now. I don't remember if I could have voted at the age of 18 - when did that start?

I never have missed a presidential race yet and don't want to this time, but I have NEVER been so dismayed at the choices, as you say. I'm beginning ti think this is the end of this country as we know it. Our standards are slipping - no one in the DNC even gives lip service to the concept of fair play - our media acts like ad hoc election committees for various politicians - there is no referee in this battle.

I don't know if you have heard Jay Leno's (?) joke that Hillary wants to be veep so much, she's offered to give Obama a lap dance. What is the male equivalent of that? What would Bill Richardson offer to do? Not quite so "funny" is it, but who has the power or authority to give a s--t?

One Moslem I heard, on Jon Stewart (I think) - maybe the guy who wrote about the Emerald City (Green Zone)
said part of the problem with the fight between religions is that there is no Pope within Islam. There is no go-to guy. That makes sense to me. Altho many Christians don't follow the Pope, he does have some gravitas in the Christian world.

But do you want to punish the entire country and world or your party?

Do you think a McCain win will do anything to help you or your concerns?

  345. NEW THREAD

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | June 20, 2008 12:57 AM

  346. Unlikely - No, I don't think a McCain win will help anything, but I'm not sure an Obama win will either. That's what I mean - I'm not sure which one is better.

Every time O does his heavy-handed stuff, itmakes me more wary. I do not think we are seeing the real Obamas so I am going by what ever I see him do now. He makes hard and fast decisions, which I doubt are really his decisions because they are so forceful and
"I don't care what anybody thinks."

So whatever each one of them does each day just gets added to my "lists" and they will eventually coalesce into a single view of each. I enjoy hearing others views and opinions but I like to form my choices totally on what I hear someone say or read what they write. So I'm watching them.

I will not vote just to satisfy my own ego or whatever - I will vote for the candidate I think will work for this country the hardest and wisest. I would love it to be Obama but.......the thing is McCain and a democratic congress does present an alternative.

Sorry. I've enjoyed the conversation, however, and you've given me something to think about. Thanks.

  347. CCrawford; 06/19/08, 6:32pm........ You said no makeover for MO - Oh No, say it isn't so - if anybody could use a coach or a makeover it's MO, she's a disaster in the "sense" and "sensibility" department.

Telling people she doesn't wear pantyhose(who cares), she wears $100 dresses and pays $10,000. for lessons and sports etc.for her children, what a way to win the blue-collar vote of people who are just scraping by.

Vadaryl mentioned something previously about MO and Cindy Mc. in a town hall, would this be with, or without, lapel pins, and pride of country????

I agree with Patsi who says that Beckham's ads are better received than BO's. But I believe there's a better comparison of those two - neither one has produced much for all money that's been put out for them.

BO is a political hack and she's just as ambitious as he is to "get even" with whitey......Where's Caroline Kennedy when you need her, Italy?????

I hope Richardson gets the VP position, even Judas got his 30 pieces of silver, didn't he? Besides, the party needs to go down and be shaken up after their act this primary season.

When BO was born in Hawaii, was it a state? and at that time didn't people take the nationality of their father? If so, maybe he's not a legitimate candidate? One can only hope.....

  348. Let's discuss Michelle's senior thesis in college instead of the fake setup fluff from the imbecile show, The View".

It would be more revealing to discuss her thesis, seriously.

Or even the many facts behind Obama the MSM refuse to ever discuss regarding Obambi.
