  1. Speaking of a guy who probably is off McCain's VP list now:

"In an essay Bobby Jindal wrote in 1994 for the New Oxford Review, a serious right-wing Catholic journal, Jindal narrated a bizarre story of a personal encounter with a demon, in which he participated in an exorcism with a group of college friends. And not only did they cast out the supernatural spirit that had possessed his friend, Jindal wrote that he believes that their ritual may well have cured her cancer. "

  2. The candidate who can communicate with the middle class without sounding condescending will have the advantage in my humble middle class opinion. It's a gift that left wing progressives don't seem to have. Bill Clinton has it--he could have a conversation in the faculty lounge at Harvard and then go to McDonalds for lunch and have a meaningful conversation with the person clearing the tables.

Margaret Carlson was on NPR last week and made the comment that Obama needs to eat a Taco to help him connect "to those kind of people." I had to laugh when she said that wondering if she also feels that journalists who eat Doritos are "those kind of people."

  10. November's Magic Numbers

WASHINGTON -- Presidential politics, like football, chess and other rule-bound competitions, is simple in objective but complex in execution...

2016: Assuming, not rashly, that Barack Obama wins, 2016 is the next time Hillary Clinton, who will then be 68, can seek the Democratic nomination. By then, the median age of the electorate will be 47, so for many millions of voters, Bill Clinton's tenure will seem only slightly less distant than Grover Cleveland's, the last Democratic presidency that did not make sensible citizens wince.

  11. OK, pay attention: There is no “age card.” A person CAN be too old to be president.

A person CANNOT be too female to be president. Therefore, voting against a woman because she is a woman is sexism.

A person CANNOT be too black to be president. Therefore, voting against a black because he is black is racism.

But a person CAN be too old. For instance, I think most would agree that 95 is too old to be president. Believing that is not ageism.

So…"How old is too old" is a legitimate question. Opinions vary. But referring to McCain’s’ age is not ageism.

BTW, he’s way too old and out of touch with today’s America.

  12. Great video Craig -- It is all about the props. Your "Made in China" flag pin is perfect! That tie is little too fashion forward for a politician. Nice, though.

I was reading an account by one of the local DEMs of the Obamafest in Manassas. She wrote that an Obama staffer at the gate approached then to ask if they would like to be seated in the VIP section. She said she fit a "demographic that Obama wanted to highlight." She is Caucasian with grey hair. She was shuttled to a holding area which was set up with snacks, drinks and seating. It was all very nice, but with a catch -- the VIPs were to be the props behind Obama, in camera range and had to stand on risers for an hour and a half. Before they were hustle to their places, everyone was strongly encouraged to use the potty, because one in position, they would not be allowed to move. Must not ruin that camera shot.

What makes him think John McCain is above criticism just because he was in the service?

The Republicans set the standard 4 years ago with their treatment of John Kerry.

That's why every time I start thinking those folks aren't all bad I get reminded very quickly what a pack of hypocrites they are.

  18. I vote for Craig! Always enjoy him on Imus. This morning he mentioned the sexism directed towards Clinton and the ageism regarding McCain. I imagine Imus, being a McCain supporter, will pick up on the ageism. He didn't respond to Craig's comment on sexism and I didn't expect him to. He has done a fine job of cleaning up his racist statements, but seems to forget that his blunder last year was not only racist but sexist as well. The show has become so bland now (safe sexism-always tolerated) I almost miss the days when he abused everyone. Nowadays I only watch when Craig is on.

  19. Blue -- You never noticed that little pincer grasp hand gesture of Obama's? What about how he never looks straight on when speaking -- it's always that side to side teleprompter head thing, and most annoying of all is that upward chin thrust. The cadence is tiresome too. Memo to Barack: Okay, WE GET IT. YOU ARE THE GREATEST LIVING SPEAKER OF THE WESTERN WORLD. Now start talking like a normal person.

  20. Last week I mentioned if you thought food and gas prices were high now, we better hope the mid-west doesn't have a drought this summer during peak growing season. Stupid me I forgot about spring floods, which are now ravaging the corn fields across the mid-west. Corn is expected to go o $8.00 a bushel, Dec 2008 corn is now trading at $7.34. Corn normally trade between $3 to $4 a bushel. The 2007-2008 corn carryover number is 1.438 billion bushels, quite a bit lower than what was expected. This can only equates into your corn flakes and filling-up your car will only increase. Plus what happens if we have a drought this summer? Ethanol from corn, a major food source, what a marvelous "F"ing idea. But if you think we have it bad, in Spain the cities of Barcelona and Seville have little or no gas due to the truckers parking their rigs in boycott of the high cost of diesel fuel. God lets hope that idea doesn't catch on here in the US.

The one I like is when he puts his index finger up (and we won't mentioned which one he used when talking at a rally about Hillary) at debates to show his disagreement and that he has something to say. I've even hold his hand up to ask to be called on like we used to do in elementary school.
    So well mannered, sometimes.

Only thing I heard Scarborough say this morning, in response to someone saying McCain was confused, was that "his grandmother is 71, and she's doing fine in the nursing home".
After that, i just turned it off. The sarcasm was bad enough, but add to that the fact that's he's too old to have a grandmother that age made it all the more ridiculous. And he said it as though he were serious.

  35. One of BHO's many gestures is stroking his face with his hand while talking. And he often strokes his face using his middle finger.

I happened to catch him on TV the previous week right after he received enough votes. He was very animated that day, walking vigorously back and forth on the stage, waving his hands above his head while he spoke, raising his voice higher and higher to keep pace with the cheering crowd. I kept thinking to myself, I have seen this act somewhere else, and then it dawned on me who use to do the exact same thing. JIMMY SWAGGER! It wouldn't surprised me to hear BHO was now Speaking in Tongues.

  44. I am sort of disappointed in Andrea Mitchell. No not because she is in the bag for BHO, but for a UoP grad, a main NBC news reporter, someone who has been on TV for many many a year, she seems to have a very hard to accurately express herself with constantly stumbling all over her words. Hipster, I don't recall Scarborough being so irate 8 years ago when the bashing was coming from the rupugs - of course there was no MOJO then so his views weren't so obvious. Actually, he redeemed himself and made fun of Mika for being surprised that Obama is engaging in politics.

Fry, I think Andrea is stumbling over her words because she doesn't believe what she's saying and is trying to make it sound wise and insightful nonetheless.

btw, was it sturg or Bowman who commented yesterday morning that GE would want to see McGrandpa in the WH instead of the golden one? Oh, you skeptics. See, you doubters, MSNBC just spent the better part of the morning criticizing the Obama camp from just about every angle over the confused and not hip on foreign policy campaign angle. And for god's sake, can't Obama get a frickin' foreign policy advisor who can argue that spending 7 years in the Hanoi Hilton does not make you an expert on foreign policy issues? It may give you a unique and irreplaceable perspective on the sacrifices of service in the military during wartime (and would make me expect a less warlike stance from him, but that wouldn't appeal to his base, would it?), but it has nothing to do with foreign policy. Now how hard is that?

Obama has had to defend himself, but shouldn't have to. If we didn't keep inserting Religion into our Politics, then the question wouldn't have to been asked in the first place. Peoples belief's differ, and for a President to rely on qualifying what he does on a belief of his Church of preference, is not serving all the people. What about what others may believe.

  117. maggs, don't let only Supreme Court Justices guide your thoughts on the judiciary. The magistrate judges, district court judges and circuit judges - all of whom are subject to much less scrutiny when placed in nomination for appointment - are much more numerous and do much to shape the body of law in the U.S. It is not uncommon for the Circuits to be split nearly evenly on the constitutionality or the appropriate application of laws passed by congress, and until the supreme court accepts an appeal, the law remains unsettled.

Those were the good old days in California. You could buy a new house and it would double in value before you could move into it. Even in the 70's we would watch our house go up 15-20% a year in Southern California. Then we would sell it, get a pile of money and buy a bigger and better house. The same thing would happen again. But eventually it got bad there in the late 1990's. Those days are long gone.

Then again, Jay Rockefeller and Bob Byrd got her the appointment - after she switched parties and donated heavily (at laest that's how I heard it) to their campaigns.

  136. 1. Given the job for which he's applying (President and leader of the free world), it's certainly appropriate to seek more details about Barack Obama's drug use and criminal activity.
    2. Did Obama complete high-level professional applications truthfully, and fully disclose all potentially relevant information about his past?
    3. Would Obama qualify for a Top Secret security clearance today if he were an average applicant, given his background?

    Interesting set of questions.
    1. Well yes it would but there is a bit of a problem with his admission of drug use. BHO is the only one who was aware of it. No one from his past remembers him ever doing any drugs and were shocked when he admitted same. Criminal activity. Well you can admit to anything, it is proving it that counts. I personally always thought it was made-up story to appear what he thought main stream Americans expect a AA youth to be involved in.

    2. I would have no idea on this one. I do think he pushed the envelope on claiming that he was once a professor.

    3. Again there would have to be something in his background that would disqualify him from being granted such a clearance. His paper trail runs rather slim. It was said that Bill Clinton, and I think true, Bill Clinton would not have been able pass a top secret background investigation if he was to apply for a government job. George Stephanopoulos. if my memory serves me right, was reported as never receiving a top secret clearance and that is why he left the Clinton administration.

How do you know? Were you and BHO passing the bong around, or the mirror back in Hawaii. Who can you point to that would support his claim of cocaine use? Not even his best friends knew he used drugs. Funny after all these years and especially now that he a big famous politician, NO ONE has even tried to sell their story of party with BHO, or I use to be BHO's supplier. Since the statues of limitation has passed no one would be arrested, and since BHO admitted it, you would think someone would come forward and support his claim. They did with both Clinton and Bush, why not BHO? Because it never happened.

As I said earlier, I wish I had counted the number of times they said it, and similar words, but at least 25 maybe more. It was used sometimes more than once in a single sentence. I think this is designed for those who are not paying *that* close attention but will surely get the subliminal message.

I have learned that tv is the worst possible place to get reliable news. It's good for comparison, that's it. Except for Fox, I will give them credit but I think they may be caving, too. If you ever know a story from the inside, that is, the real truth, you will see how deceitful CNN and MSNBC is.

And I don't care whether the Iraqis want us there or not - we should not be there, and if AQ establishes a base there, we have no more right to attack it in their borders than we have to mount an attack on AQ in Pakistan without their consent. It's the BO attempt to strike a balance between being painted as a cut and runner and for suggesting withdrawing from Iraq and trying to show he's got the stuff to be tough against the terr'ists. This is the exact message:

This will make you think: HOPEFULLY.

A Trivia question in Sunday School:

How long is the beast allowed to have authority in Revelations? Guess the Answer?

Revelations Chapter 13 tells us it is 42 months, and you know what that is?,

Almost a four year term to a Presidency.
All I can say is Lord Have Mercy on us.

According to The Book of Revelations the anti-Christ is:

The anti-Christ will be a man, in his 40s, of MUSLIM descent, who will deceive the nations with persuasive language, and have a MASSIVE Christ-like appeal....the prophecy says that people will flock to him and he will promise false hope and world peace, and when he is in power, will destroy everything.

    Sound like anyone you know?

    End of message.

How do you prove you're not the anti-christ? DNA tests, maybe?

"In an essay Bobby Jindal wrote in 1994 for the New Oxford Review, a serious right-wing Catholic journal, Jindal narrated a bizarre story of a personal encounter with a demon, in which he participated in an exorcism with a group of college friends. And not only did they cast out the supernatural spirit that had possessed his friend, Jindal wrote that he believes that their ritual may well have cured her cancer. "

  208. Jamie,

BC's problem wasn't some smoke. I refer you to his Roger Clinton, Clinton's half-brother, is caught on tape saying, "Gotta get some for my brother. He has a nose like a vacuum cleaner." Now maybe Roger was blowing some smoke of his own, I don't know, you don't know. But what I do know was Arkansas back in those days was home to some of the nation's largest cocaine smuggling operations. Home of the late Barry Seal, CIA Ops, Mena Airport. BC was governor, or States Attorney General at the time. A lot of stuff happens, knowingly and unknowingly, at far out of the way airports.

See this is what I mean, everyone talked about Bill and George using cocaine. They came out of the woodwork to tell their tales, yet Bill & George have always denied using cocaine. The enlighten one is just the opposite. BHO's tale of cocaine use is similar in some ways to the poem "Who killed Cock Robin". The Sparrow admits to having fire the arrow which killed Cock Robin, but no one saw him fire the arrow. BHO claims he has used cocaine, but no one comes forward to support his claim. I guess I am the only one who never believed BHO used cocaine.

Who would not believe such a personal story coming from a well educated, articulate, good looking AA? Why would he make up such a tale? It has to be true? No it doesn't! But this is the stereotype held by most Americans, that AA youth use/sell cocaine. To deny drug use would only make voters think he has something to hide. So tell them what they already believe. Problem with that is you are taking todays stereotype image of AA youth and doing a cut & paste job trying to fit it into a 1970's setting. This picture has been altered! At the time of his admitted cocaine use, mid to late 1970's, BHO was living in Hawaii. What did cocaine cost during that time frame in Hawaii, and how did little Barry get the money to buy the cocaine? There are no answer to these questions because no one ever asked BHO those questions, and even if they have tried to ask, BHO had a simple pat answer, "Those questions have already been answered". Ahh BHO, no they haven't, but you are smart enough not to further the tale.

  209. Thoughts from another blog:

Jay Leno: 'Hillary Would Offer Obama Lap Dance for Vice Presidency'

I tried to think of a racist joke that would be the equivalent of Jay Leno's funny about Hillary Rodham Clinton offering Obama a lap dance in return for the Vice Presidency. But the Democratic primary has shot my sense of humor all to hell. There are some 116 million women over the age of 18 in America. Many of us will never be the same.

Hillary Rodham Clinton's historic bid for the presidency caused an unprecedented number of women and girls to tune into politics for the first time in their lives. Many of us will never forget and never recover from the violently misogynistic assault on our candidate, on us, and on our daughters.

And, yes, what hurts the most is the fact that so very many of our "progressive" friends and allies joined in the fun.

Same reason so many people smear Hispanics. Most of the new baby photos I've received from my great neices and nephews, not to mention some friends, this spring, have been of little Hispanic cuties. And the stigma is still out there. It took my great neice's husband, an American born Mexican, over a year to find a coaching job after finishing his masters degree.

And he's so "American" he gave his new son Jace, the middle name of ESPN, fer Chrissakes.

"all the Clinton "women" falling in line behind Barack Obama? "

No. The younger ones are moving, but Senator Clintons hard core group consisting of mainly "Suburban white women" are not moving to Obama.

One poll showed that Obama did get a six point "bump" after Hillary suspended her campaign, but if she is added to the ticket, that bump becomes 10 points. Of course, both of these are on a national level. We will have to wait and see where those four points are living.

As I've said before if nothing untoward happens, this will either be one of the monumental landslide years or a real squeaker and those women are the ones that will make the difference.

So far, I have only found one, Marine Pfc. Robert Garwood.

Garwood enlisted in the Marines in 1963; was wounded and captured 10 days short in '65. After torture, Garwood was said by other prisoners to have 'gone over'. He returned from Nam in '79, and was almost immediately court martialed and convicted.

  284. pogo, I read the article you posted. I may have missed the meaning of it, but I balk at the "lumping" into voting groups. I did not come to support Hillary because she was a woman, but only when I looked at the three remaining candidates, and I think she would make the best president of the three. I do think it is more of a gut reaction than anything else, so if that if feminine, I plead guilty.

  286. liz - it's a numbers thing - historically women have split between R & D, while the white male working class has voted D more than R, but are a swing voting bloc since many of them vote their patriotism and prejudices in addition to their economic self interest. This election could change that, but I think that's what Matthews was referring to - or meant to be referring to.

Yesterday we saw a Rasmussen poll showing Obama defeating McCain 53-35 in Washington. Another poll by SUSA confirms the massive lead.

SurvyeUSA. 6/7-9. Likely voters. MoE 3.9% (5/16-18 results)

    McCain (R) 39 (36)
    Obama (D) 56 (52)"

I am pleased about this because now I can vote for Hillary with a clear conscience. I liked what Jamie said about if it were a tight race she'd most likely vote Obama, but with his super lead in Washington State, I, Jamie and other Washingtonians for Clinton can vote for our preferred candidate without harming the official nominee.

I am definitely voting Gregoire. On the State level, a Republican governor would be a DISASTER for higher education and state workers. And Gregoire is a smart and good Governor, even if she endorsed Obama ;-) ... So Washingtonians don't forget to vote for Christine for Governor.

And I was THRILLED to read that Paul Newman's friend and neighbor, A.E. Hotchner, was denying a reports that quotes him as saying the 83-year-old actor has cancer. Hotchner was the author of "Doris Day Her Own Story" which I first read when I was 15 years old... checked it out of the Anoka County Library in Minnesota and later bought a paperback and have read it two more times. A Dr. Ronald Walters, the director of the African American Leadership Institute was on Bill Moyers Journal last Friday. He was talking about how giving speeches with a teleprompter was where Obama did best. I don't think that sounded like much of a complimentfor Obama. We need a president who can think on his feet not just read well.

  311. Chloe - I know it appeals to younger voters, but it's emotional. That's why I don't like his speeches wish he wasn't given so much credit for being a great speaker. He doesn't speak - he harangues.

There sre a lot of mentions of Hitler these days and the media says there are too many. Perhaps there are too many, but the reason why so many people talk about Hitler isn't always the Holocaust. He comes to mind also because of his speaking style - he was the consumate emotional speaker. Do you think all those rabid Germans were thinking when they raised their salutes? Or the Italians?

No, they weren't thinking. They suspended their thoughts and became a screaming mob, and went out and did horrible horrible things. The crowds standing in the squares in Iran screaming for the Ayatolla weren't thinking. There is one brain working when a group of people get screaming like that - one brain with many skulls.

When a speaker works at creating a screaming ranting crowd, he/she is not trying to inform - the goal is to stifle thought. That's how Obama got noticed, because he distracted people from thinking, and it worked. Now we're stuck with choices I don't want to make.
He's not a great speaker - he harangues. That 's all I was saying.

I know that appeals to the young but it also appeals to seasoned veterans. It's insidious. "Question authority" has long been a very leftish mantra, but somehow the very left abandoned it. They chose emotion over reason.

He doesn't say much about what he will do - he repeats and reapeats what we can do. He's not a speaker - he's a salesman - he harangues until you buy.

The ink was hardly dry on the paper before the letters accusing him of being a brutish baby killer started arriving at the Atlantic. They published several of them.

I was completely taken aback by the vitriol in those letters.

    bethyboo,
To me, the most bothersome thing about Obama is the control he seems to have over large groups of people at his rallies - the more people, the more in a trance they seem. You got me thinking about it with your post. It's seems almost cult like. It's like they're hypnotized and believe whatever it is he says.

Reagan had that charisma, but Obama seems to be more like the evangelical leaders that can lead their followers anywhere. They literally worship him (and I'm NOT talking about anyone on this site). I know your reference to Hitler was used to compare the mind control that he had over many. But with him, it was evil. And I don't think that about Obama. But back in Iowa, I had no idea who this guy was. And at that time, I didn't know anything about him and he had all these crowds worshiping him. It was a real turn-off.. It looked like mind control, at the time. Usually, someone who gets that much love and respect has to work a while for it. Immediately, they were under his spell. That seemed and seems dangerous to me.

It would have been nice if he had been around for a while and could have earned our trust and respect. Now it feels like he got it for free.

  355. EuroTom, I wouldn't believe anything I read on DailyKooks anymore. They're all still drinking the Daily Koolaid.

As usual, my vote won't count for anything in November either, so I wouldn't even bother except for the Mitch McConnell race.

  357. PoU, Maggi, KGC, and anyone else who got involved in the discussion about you-know-who and various political parties of the 20th century.............

First, PoU, I understand you don't agree with my view of Obama, and that's fine. I know you don't,and wondered how you and the others would react to my comment. You were very restrained and I appreciate that. At least now you know my one of my reasons why I am hesitant about Obama.

Maggi and KGC - Last year maybe one of the reps in ?Congress referred to an opponent metaphorically as you-know-who, and he was chided gently for being just one of an army of people using such a comparison, and really it was being way over-done. I was glad to hear the media (can you believe it?) make that point because I also am very tired of such words and names
being neutralized and stripped of meaning due to such
injudicious usage. So I was quite interested in reading about Godwin's Law, and I basically agree with it.

Based on that info in wikipedia, I think I probably agree more closely with Richard Sexton, who was given credit by Godwin for being the source of his own theory, but both are very valid as rules of thumb.

Words like fascist, nazi, and socialist are at least fixed in people's minds as evil, that's it. The real meanings are notpart of most people's vocabulary - I use them very seldom for that reason. I spent too many years teaching their histories and when I use them I want them to convey their exact meanings.

When I chose to use you-know-who's name, I did so knowing it might cause just the reaction it did from all of you. I would like to point out that I did not use the name of the other you-know-who, nor did I use the words fascist, nazi, or socialist, precisely because I wasn't talking about politics but about speaking abilities and styles.

I didn't allude to Huey Long or any of the evangelical preachers since I don't want to seem to be "dissing" anyone's religious ideas and because I don't think Huey :Long is that much a part of people's consciousness today. You know about him and I do, but I don't think his name is as evocative as you-know-who's. To me, you-know-who's speeches and screaming crowds into rapture make a picture most people can call quickly to mind. Another name I could have used is Jim Jones because of all the allusions to kool-aid, but I didn't think of it. I admit I might not have used it even if I had thought of it.

So, what it amounts to is that everyone's response to me are very relevant, and I really appreciate them.
Nonetheless, I stand by everything and wouldn't change a word. Mike Godwin has a good point but it isn't a law, it's a suggestion, a prediction which even he says has exceptions. In this instance, I accepted my own judgement rather than his. I very strongly disagree with the idea that the mention of you-know-who is the end of rational thought.. For example, you continued to write rationally with your usual careful explanations. Such mention can be the beginning if irrational talk certainly, but I haven't read one word of irrationality from either of you.

I saw that he has a blog of some sort and tried to enter it with the paragraph in question, but don't know how to get into blogs so didn't do it. I'd find it interesting to know his reaction, and Richard Sexton's. If they found me guilty, I would find them wrong.

I liked the story of the imagined war room meeting which had trouble discussing the war plans without using the proscribed words. If you can't discuss speeches invoking the two most mesmerizing speakers of the 20th century, it's not a very worthwhile
    discussion.

NOW, before anybody gets angry and thinks I have been flip, please don't think that.. I thought all this out when I wrote my comment, so it was all in my brain and ready to be written down. I love to throw this kind of thought around and put it out there for review - kind of preparing a defense ahead fo time. I didn't feel the need to defend myself and didn't feel attacked, but just had to furhter expalin myself. I hope you don't feel attacked or insulted either.

  359. Obama has a "Let's work together" mantra? I once believed in working together to get the job done. However , at my job they discouraged working together. If you have too many people working together to get the job done it drives down efficiency. If you only have one person working to get the job done efficiency goes up.
