Where are you that there are egrets in the trees? Florida? I have never seen them in trees, only near water.it must have been a fantastic sight.. Remember reading they turn pink from eating something, but have forgotten now what it was..
O, forgot to say. I was very happy to see HRC picking up her senate work. Even after such a hard fought primary the woman eyes no vacation.
Am very glad that she moved on....
Julie - I'm in northern calif, an hour fromSF, in Santa Rosa. We have herons and egrets here, I'm told. On the way to SF there are several patches of wetlands alongside the highway where you can glimpse a lot of waterfowl, and some are the big white birds.
Some are in fields with cattle, and if I understand correctly, these are herons. There are also egrets and the easiest way to tell them apart is the color of their legs - black or yellow. these today were black.
Of course, I could have mis-understood my informant or forgotten, or something else. I've seen nests of great blues (in different places, of course) and the nest I could see today was a lot like that.
No matter what, big white birds are a sight, and on their nests, breath-taking. Apparently, it is an annual event, which I figured must be so. The road is a little cordoned off, but I managed to legally get thru and not cause any fuss. I took some pix and if they turn out ok, I'll try to post them. But I'm glad they feel safe there, and that they are safe there.
The truth . That's what it was. It makes me wonder ...ponder a moment about all the conspiracy theories about Bush "creating" the horrible 9-11 attacks so Rummy and Dick and Tenet and Wolfy could spin their web in Iraq.
I never believed any of that stuff...nor the theory that a US missile and not a passenger airliner crashed into the Pentagon.
However, I have no doubt the repuggs would welcome a terrorist attack if it meant McBush gets the White House, none at all.
They have shown they have no regrets for the Iraq debacle that a huge percentage of United States now realize was a mistake from the start.
Charlie just spoke the truth, is all. "Bring 'em on!!!!!" will be heard next. That worked well for Bush...it got hundreds of US soldiers killed, thousands maimed, and a hundred thousand Iraqis killed or burned or severely injured.
Now about that reward...our pundit is closing in on the prize.
He never should have tipped us off about the fluorescent bulbs being the igniters...because I have 4 of them here to use, and I also have about ten partial gallon cans of old paint in my garage, but I will win the prize because I have a nicely decomposed compost pile which I will use for methane gas which will be used for the new engine.
I think a trip to France to take in the Tour de France , sitting in the Pyrenees on a comfy blanket with baguettes and gouda and smoked fish and lots of Evian and juices , as I watch the cyclists wind through the mountains...yes, that would be a nice break for a 300-times-over millionaire!!
bethyboo - the birds you were talking about this morning are called cattle egrets. They are herons, and are a lot smaller than great Blues - one of which summmered in the pool below a low head dam I pass on the way to work until last year whenit did not return for the summer season - and bigger than little green herons, which are much rarer than the cattle egret.
Florida is lousy with all manner of herons and other long legged wading birds. I always used to joke that the best place to birdwatch in FL was the Homestead dump - the place was practically overrun with just about every imaginable wading bird - egrets, herons, flamingos, you name it. If only the olfactory sense was as pleasant as the visual one there it would be a birdwatcher's paradise.
Dex, have a nice trip. Invite a friend and fellow cyclist wine lover francophile. I could give you a recommendation.
Hey Craig,
If you need any help, I'm available.
But you'll have to split the 300 mil, 50/50.
I'll do the googling, you do the actual work.
Wha..?!
I think it was Renee, the other day, that said that she had heard a talk on the radio about how googling is preventing us from having a deep understanding of subjects. I thought about it afterwards, and it actually made some sense. We're all interested in quick answers. And not always careful about which sources.
Every once in a while I would look down at our swimming pool and their would be a great blue standing on the pool's edge waiting for the catch of the day to swim by. Not terribly bright.
And I've watched them fight for tens of minutes trying to engorge a fish that will never go down in a hundred years.
Florida is absolutely full of all sorts of wonderful birds. But, it's a constant battle keeping their habitat (which includes their food sources) intact.
It was my understanding that the cattle egrets 'blew-in' from Africa to South America and then migrated north from there. When we were in Panama, they were all over feeding on bugs.
I'm off the grid because Vrizon's SEAMLESSness isn't seamless. I'm without DSL now for a few days. ACK.
I'd like to have the telecom CEO's try to set up service like we regular folks do and suffer the unending frustrations of India's Bob and Jane, the Phillipines, or the US folks who don't know anything and screw up what else there is to screw up. Something like when Michael Moore had the CEO of IBM try to format a floppy disk, in the olden days. He couldn't do it.
I was watching House telecom, phone & internet service, hearings on CSPAN while I was on the phone for a frustrating hour that ended with being disconnected while trying to deal with the Verizon thang. Ironic. I was TALKING to the TV. It didn't help.
Catch up with y'all later...probably much later...if Verizon's left to it's own devices.
Pogo -- Those birds are beautiful...and Bethyboo, please do put your pictures online! I'd love tto see them.
Flatus; ROFL at the blue waiting for a fish in the swimming pool. My granddaughter has been fishing with her Gramma Judy, who lives on the lake here, and has a swimming pool overlooking the lake...(I've asked her to adopt me!) Anyway, we got a great photo of Maria practicing fishing in Judy's pool....priceless, and even funnier now that I read your post.
HIGH ISLAND — It's Rear Window for bird watchers.
"Sanctuary...As happy as they are to have the chance to see so many species up close during spring migration, experienced birders know there's a melancholy element to all these visitors. The birds stopping here do it out of need, even desperation, after a grueling flight across the Gulf."
I'm for McCain, but not the GOP
The Republicans go awry — and disgrace ‘conservatism’ — when it comes to Big Oil.
I support John McCain for president. But that doesn't mean I support the Republican Party. Had the GOP nominated anyone else this year, I'd be struggling to rationalize a vote for the Democrats in November. I back McCain because we need integrity, experience and courage in our next president. I view the Democrats' candidate, Barack Obama, as a Ferrari without an engine, wonderfully shiny but with nothing under the hood...The Republicans have abandoned their principles while the Democrats have abandoned their senses. http://blogs.usatoday.com/oped/2008/06/im-for-mccain-b.html
This is great news environmentally for FL. I wonder whether US Sugar would have done better converting from sugar production to sugarcane ethanol. Just wondering, since everything is ultimately connected to everything else. I hope the deal goes through and the thought does not occur to them if it falls apart.
"And I reminded the President that I am reminded of the great talent of the -- of our Philippine-Americans when I eat dinner at the White House."
-- George W. Bush
Craig, You can use your prize money to buy new eyebrows.
Clearly, MoJo is right; the tech for fuel efficiency already exists. However, wouldn't it be fantastic to have something to make us miraculously self-sufficient?
We have a couple of Great, Blue Herons on the canals where I live. White Egrets, too. Rarely, I will see a Kingfisher.
Someone was saying how carefully Mr Obama was spending his campaign funds. You sure couldn't tell it from the number of glossy, personalized mailings I've received, and continue to receive, after he came into big money. It doesn't make me think better of him.
I contrast that with Mrs Clinton who stopped mailings to me after it became apparent that I was monetarily committed to her candidacy.
I still get lots of mailings from Mr McCain. The only time I sent him money was after the Bushies trashed him at Bob Jones Univ back in 2000. He's wasted a lot of money on me.
I had an associate who was asked to volunteer his fundraising expertise at the Salvation Army. The first thing he did was analyze their mailing list. Turns out it was full of people who had made a single contribution ten and more years ago. In other words, they were wasting dollar after dollar pursuing contributions from people who were most probably never going to give again.
By the way, for anyone in the Nashville area, who has an extra thousand bucks to throw around, you can have lunch at The Palm today with Merle Haggard, Vince Gill and Steve Cropper to discuss global environmental issues. They are all part of the Green Train Foundation.
Not that there's anything wrong with the eybrows you have now Craig. I'm just assuming that they will be involved in some sort of incident during R&D of your battery.
"the birds in FL will have almost 300 square miles more habitat adjacent to the everglades." Pogo
Pogo,
in this particular instance, it seems like Charlie Crist is doing pretty well as the governor of your great state. Or does he really deserve any of the credit?
Maybe our government is moving forward environmentally. At least there's a lot more talk about it now.
I hear ya - I only got a couple of mailings from Clinton, but was on the e-mail list. The difference for Obama is that he has 2 campaign phases - and he has to go back to the well now that the primaries are over. I have faced that serial noncontributing ex donor issue in a couple of fundraising efforts I help with in our area. In one of them in particular my list of contacts routinely has addresses of folks who gave at one time but haven't in years. I don't waste my time calling them - they get the mass mailing, which is almost totally ineffective, and I have suggested they drop everyone who hasn't contributed in 3 or 4 years, instead of the phone call, which I generally do pretty well with.
"they were wasting dollar after dollar pursuing contributions from people who were most probably never going to give again.

Don't you ever feel that money isn't an issue with Obama, Flatus. He seems to always have more than he can spend.
Craig..... what the hell!...... a broken arm and ankle weren't enough.... now you're trying to blow your head off...... ROFL!
what a nice surprise..... this morning you are all talking about one of my very favorite subjects...... BIRDS.... I LOVE birds!
been feeding them for years...... and seen all kinds of species.....
one of my favorite things to do is to go kayaking on a pond where Goiden Eagles nest..... and Patsi and I love the share stories about our beloved wild turkeys....
This bit of information is ugly, but there's a line that caused me to almost fall on the floor laughing:
"Neo-Nazi, skinhead and segregationist groups have reported gains in numbers of visitors to their Web sites and in membership since the senator from Illinois secured the Democratic nomination June 3. His success has aroused a community of racists, experts said, concerned by the possibility of the country's first black president.
"I haven't seen this much anger in a long, long time," said Billy Roper, a 36-year-old who runs a group called White Revolution in Russellville, Ark. "Nothing has awakened normally complacent white Americans more than the prospect of America having an overtly nonwhite president."
THE LINE: "an overtly nonwhite president."
ROFL! overtly nonwhite.....I can't wait to drop that on my feminist pal who calls me a nappy headed ho..."So, are you 'overtly' or 'covertly' nonwhite?"
chloe, much as I like the everglades and keys, I'm not in FL - I'm in WV. I give Crist kudos for this, though.
blue, yeah, in the car all afternoon yesterday I listened to a discussion on ethanol on the Ed Schultz show (which I pretty much hate). Eddie's in the tank pretty much for corn ethanol, and the one good point he made was that Brazil has the ability to be self sufficient with cane sugar ethanol because they don't have nearly as many cars to power with it as we do and we don't have all that much arable farmland that can support sugar cane production. I suppose he's right about that, but haven't looked into it. I'm only aware of any significant sugarcane farming in FL & LA. He was also talking about cellulosic ethanol, although I haven't really looked into the respective efficiencies of those types of production.
"and Patsi and I love the share stories about our beloved wild turkeys...."
Renee -- you bettcha. If there is anything niftier than looking out the patio glass doors to find a flock of a hundred or so wild turkeys wandering through the yard, I don't know what it is....that's one thing I miss about the farm. On the other hand, I'd damn near be housebound given the gas prices now.
Ethanol's Sweet Allure
PRADOPOLIS, Brazil — A blizzard of crushed husks stings the eyes. A sickly-sweet smell of fermenting alcohol assaults the nose. It's harvest time, and the busy Sao Martinho sugar mill is grinding out energy independence. http://www.enn.com/top_stories/article/16205
Pats, maybe you could suggest to the folks organizing the event that you may consider writing a book or article about celebrities involved in environmental causes and get comped in - might be a good article to research. Just thinkin'.
thanks, chloe, good basic article about ethanol in US & Brazil. Fast Eddie should read it and acknowledge the compounding effect conversion of corn to fuel production has on food prices.
I took a shot at Gordo yesterday and had to run...not fair. My point was that even in your zeal to knock Obama down, quoting Carl Rove as a character witness against him is obviously a flawed strategy. If you pursue the enemy of my enemy is my friend to such extremes you'll always end up with friends who will expose your zeal, if not cut your throat.
I had a chat with Mr Crist about 15-years ago. I thought he was the genuine article.
I contrast my impression of him with another pol who was schmoozing in an effort to gain support for his candidacy. He had this strange looking guy, with total recall, mumbling into his ear the names of people headed in his direction and what their hot button issues were. This was at a _large_ convention with many, many attendees.
He tried to put the lock on me, but I had no interest as he was patently a phony.
My point is, isn't everyone here permitted to post what they want by whomever they want. Why be afraid of differing opinions. And being aware of a source you don't agree with, doesn't make a threatening.
I agree totally, Chloe. Before, Gordo was abstracting large portions of his articles, but when Craig asked him to desist he did. I, for two, don't have any problem with any advocate doing the same.
Oh, sure, anyone can quote any source they want...not my intent to suggest a ban on quoting Carl Rove. Quote him all you like, but in a political context, Rove is not credible and anything he says is by definition intended to produce a certain series of actions with a political goal unassociated with the truth.
"Pats, maybe you could suggest to the folks organizing the event that you may consider writing a book or article about celebrities involved in environmental causes and get comped in - might be a good article to research. Just thinkin'."
Excellent idea Pogo....I must confess that I have been woefully ignorant about using writing credentials to get in places. All the years I worked with Garth Brooks, I never even used my backstage pass once.
yup, everyone is free to cite any source and everyone is free to comment on the same. It's called an open blog for a good reason. Being critical of Rove as a source is certainly not a criticism of Gordo, but of his citation of Rove as a source, and IMHO, that's fair.
Patsi, one of the best concerts I ever saw was using my own credentials as a rep of the university when I worked with U of AL in student personnel services. I volunteered to serve at that concert - it was ZZTop, and I was absolutely blown away by Billy Gibbons.
My apologies for the hasty post yesterday regarding the ‘corporate’ media being paid off. I was of course referring to the industry and not our Craig. As Viv pointed out many journalists are under pressure to cover stories in a certain way or even not to cover them at all. A recent but minor example is this rebuttal by Stanley Bing of a commentary from the week before by Andrew Cohen on Sunday Morning: http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=4200929n&channel=/sections/sunday/videoplayer3445.shtml I would just love to have a boss like this. Now we have a much clearer view of the nature of public relations at CBS News. They have control over these loose cannons who have the gall to use harsh terms like liars. Even more telling was his contrast of journalists who get most of their information from flack catchers (a term popularized by Tom Wolfe) and the misinformation of the blogosphere (a term used by slanted media control freaks).
Thanks to Craig and CQ for a version of the public square that more approximates the public.
"quoting Carl Rove. Quote him all you like, but in a political context, Rove is not credible and anything he says is by definition intended to produce a certain series of actions with a political goal unassociated with the truth. "
It's Karl, by the way. But more importantly, I do believe that with many of Obama's supporters the "cool" factor plays into the worship. AND, Dems dismiss Rove at their peril. He's very smart, and knows the election process inside out. I despise what he's done with that brain, but I don't ever, ever underestimate him.
Nor do I underestimate the concept that McCain is a sacrificial goat...The deep pocket Repub power brokers hoping for a Carter-like presidency followed by a new Reagan revolution and complete corporate dominance. Unless, of course, the corporations have found somebody who'll carry their champagne glasses in Obama. And for me, that jury is out.
The sacrificial McCain
...because of his age, McCain isn't going to be a significant player in the party for much longer. The other guys, Romney, Huckabee, maybe even Rudy, have years to go, and a humiliating defeat for one of them could damage them down the line. .... When it's all over and his campaign goes down in flames, they can say, "Well, we never liked that guy anyway." And should he accidentally pull off a victory--which none of them expect--they're pleasantly surprised, but they know they'll only have to deal with him for a single term. http://jeff_mariotte.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/05/the-sacrificial.html
"My point was that even in your zeal to knock Obama down, quoting Carl Rove as a character witness against him is obviously a flawed strategy."
From my post:
" ... Rove referred to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as "coolly arrogant."
"He's the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by."
"I thought maybe your publisher would pick up the tab."
I wish, Chloe! Record labels and book publishers are pretty much the same, like lawyers. Even if it looks like they are picking up the tab, you get billed for it. I still remember years ago, thinking the attorney for my women's magazine was such a nice guy because he kept inviting me to lunch. I mentioned that to our business manager and she almost fell on the floor. Then she showed me his bills. Not only did he charge the magazine for the lunch, but for an hour of his time!
Here's why it's important: Rove is a big gun, but he doesn't fire his own bullets - he gets others to speak the words. Right now the words are such as "snob," "elitist," "arrogant." These are words intended, not to convey the truth, but to create an image which will spread across the political pond like an oil slick - not deep, but all the way across, and effective. He's the master and I would want to wonder why I was on his side, unless I truly wanted to join his war against liberalism.
Well, Chloe...I've often wondered about my years-ago decision to try to make a living as a writer. As anyone in a creative field, or self-employed in general, will tell you, it's a crap shoot!
And maybe this is why I am still outraged at the treatment Bill Clinton got during this campaign: the 90s, with Clinton in the White House, were the best working years I ever had. The record business was up -- due in large part to Garth Brooks -- and the economy hummed along. Once Bush came into power, work seemed to dry up.
TP -- I understand your point about the "talking points"...however, the elitist accusations came directly from Obama's comments at the San Francisco fund raiser. Those were ill-chosen words, and he knew it.
Rove is actually late to that bandwagon.
Personally, I don't give a damn about his "cool factor." What I DO care about is just how deep his ties go into the telecommunications lobby, and a few other special interests. I realize politicians have those ties, and I'm not even across-the-board anti-lobbyist. But Obama savaged Hillary Clinton on being same-old, same-old. And he's looking pretty same-old to me.
"Patsi, and of course, Garth stopped touring just before Dumya took the limo from Dulles to the WH."
yes -- and it affected the country industry to an extent. BUT luckily there were others to carry on: Trisha, Martina, the Chicks (before they were swiftboated), Alan Jackson, et al.
The book I am just finishing is called The Garth Factor: The Career Behind Country's Big Boom. I think the thing that might surprise people is just how some of the executives who profited most by his career tried to sabatoge him.
Talk about good news, I was just browsing over at Pollster and see that the Dem senatorial candidates are well ahed of the repugs in 3 of the 4 open senate seats and the special in MS is deadlocked. Plus Tubes Stevens is facing a serious threat in his race. I like the way this is shaping up.
Fair point Patsi. All good propaganda has a basis in truth. My concern is turning this big ship around and I would have happily voted for Hillary in November on that account, just as I will happily vote for Obama.
Pogo -- or anyone -- are there stats out there that show whether the Dem down ticket candidates are conservative Dems? It seems to me that even with all this MoveOn folderol, the Dems who are winning these seats in red states are conservatives. That's one reason I don't buy into the idea that the country is getting more liberal.
Patsi, a guy I used to work with, who was not a huge country music fan, but was a huge live music fan told me that the Garth Brooks concert he went to in Pittsburgh back in the mid 90s was the best concert he had ever seen. He definitely energized the country music industry, and bled over into the rock crossover crowd at a time when the big venue rock concert industry was on life support. I never went to see him, but I did see Vince Gill, and was blown away by his musicianship and professionalism - considerable since his warm up act - Mary Chapin Carpenter (I took Mrs. P to the concert to see her and had little interest in the concert otherwise) - got sick and he had to do the entire show, which he did for almost 3 hours in two sets. Neither of us were disappointed.
Article done by AP on todays subject. More people trust McCain on Iraq than Obama...
Don't count the republicans out, if Bush would capture Bin Laden, the number game would also be a big plus for republicans. but he hasn't in 8 years, sooo we won't hold our breath..
Patsi, I haven't seen anything about that - but I do know the guy in MS is a conservative in the old Dixiecrat mold - and no liberal could ever get elected there.
But Obama savaged Hillary Clinton on being same-old, same-old. And he's looking pretty same-old to me.

And something else that bothers me is wondering why the corporations liked him so much more than Clinton. What does he owe them for all they've done for him. It would be nice to know who owns him and what they expect from him if he wins. There's got to be many favors out there to be paid back (to many people).
"Previous posts on this subject have highlighted the absence on Obama’s document of an embossed seal and stamp/signature from the VR office (you can see both on Decosta’s) — both of which are mandatory for ALL certifications leaving that office, they tell me."
"on how heart disease can fell even the well-educated with good medical care."
dog -- My brother-in-law died of one of those sudden, fatal heart attacks. Here's the kicker, and, I believe, a BIG red flag as to a major problem in health care/insurance costs. Even though Ken was dead when the paramedics got there, they kept on and on until they had him on life support. They took him to the hospital where he was hooked up for a week. He never regained consciousness, and the doctors admitted that so much brain damage had occurred by the time they even started, that he'd be basically a vegetable even if he roused somewhat. But they didn't tell my sister that for days -- finally kind of casually dropped the news.
The cost of that week, until my sister finally put her foot down and demanded they take him off the machines, was ENORMOUS. Of course, he had good insurance. So the hospital and doctors billed for thousands, to keep a dead man on a machine. Un-freaking-believable.

One name jumps out of the roster for Obama's "Economic Competitiveness Summit" tomorrow in Pittsburgh: General Jim Jones, United States Marine Corps (retired), President and CEO of the Institute for 21st Century Technology, U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Yup, the same Jim Jones who was rumored as an Obama VP candidate a couple weeks ago before showing up at a McCain event last week... http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/
Speaking of who owns what politicians....I promise you that the Republican party has something on John McCain. I worked one big time campaign for a dear friend who was a liberal Republican and a feminist. (Back in the days when those existed....)
They whipped her into line with a list of every man she'd slept with after her divorce. It was unbelievable. But they had private investigators on it, and they had the goods. Some of the men were married.
I knew the day the RNC showed up and met with her behind closed doors, that she'd been whipped. It was just as well she lost, because they owned her.
I say any place the birds are not captive qualifies as "the wild." A dump would be no different than bird feeder, just it's not in your yard.
When we lived in Houston, we used to go birding at Galveston Island State Park. That's where I saw the roseate and many other fantastic shore birds - most for the first time - an exciting event for a "life lister" which I became as a direct result. Hurricane Alicia hit in August 1983 and did terrific damage to the shoreline. We moved back to the northeast after that, so I haven't seen its recovery, but I'd love to take a trip back there for old times sake.
Clinton staff plays ping-pong
When Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton returned to her Senate office on Tuesday for the first time since suspending her presidential campaign, she found her staffers--Ann and Mike-- playing a rowdy game of ping-pong, as 36 other staffers cheered along, as Politico reported today. It was a practical joke--their way of pretending it was all fun and games while Clinton was gone. Clinton was quite a sport about it too, laughing along. The Crypt
Jamie has posted something new today to her blog site..... maybe she's taking a break from here..... I wouldn't blame her.....
Patsi..... that is unbelievable..... not to mention that the most money is spent medical wise on a person's last 6 months of life....
I don't mean to suggest that we should deny the elderly medical care.... but to keep people alive with machines and tubes is, IMO, a way of denial.....
people should be allowed to die with dignity and then have their life celebrated.....
No doubt, but a birder's gotta go where a birder's gotta go. I don't think a trip to the Arkansas swamp would be much fun, but I'd go if I knew I'd see the ivory-billed woodpecker. :)
I am very encouraged by the news about hydrogen fuel cell cars When Schwarzengger took office he said one of his goals was to make this technology available. Most people thought it was a dodge to keep from doing other things but although it is still not widely availabl, it is definitely closer.
Although a friend said the other day, he thought the real answer is diesel. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/18/automobiles/18DIESEL.html?_r=1&sq=diesel%20cars&st=nyt&oref=slogin&scp=1&pagewanted=all
My niece and her husband are docs and this is an issue they go on and on about. She is now a hospice doctor and able to explore better ways to die with dignity. He sees the other side since he is an emergency room doc and the pressure is always on to do anything and everything no matter what.
my dad had his final heart attack in the middle of the night at home in his bed. 911 was called and they worked on him thru the trip to the hospital and then in the IC ward. They had to restart his heart several times in the next 12 hours. Mom and I decided, that without any brain activity since the 911 call, to pull the plug. I never saw the final bill but I would bet it was expensive to keep him alive. What we all need is a "Living Will" that outline how we want to be treated when we are in a similar situation. If nothing else, it will make your survivors decisions easier. Some way, some how, we will all leave this earth some day.
KC, fascinating article on diesel - based on the exhaust of the dumptruck I followed up the hill out of Clarksburg, WV yesterday, not all diesel is clean yet. It is an interesting prospect though - whoda thunk diesel could help clean up the auto industry?
Clinton has 26 million she can't use to pay primary debts.. They are trying to work out a trade.
Obama isn't doing Clinton any favors and vice versa.
Posted by: anonymous 2.0 | June 24, 2008 10:46 PM
how will the "trade" mentioned above work? won't she need to get waivers/oks from the original donators? can she use it for vp campaign expenses if on ticket? do MSM know about this and don't want to rock boat? where's jamie when we need her?
Gotta love them German engineers - they've got their heads on right - and they've even learned after all these years how to make functional cup holders.
I used to love Vespas - right up until I got my first real motorcycle, and I haven't looked back.
A riskier route would be to ask her general election donors to redirect — or “redesignate,” in campaign finance parlance — their general election contributions to Obama’s presidential campaign as part of a deal under which the Illinois senator would ask his donors to give to Clinton to help her pay down her debt. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0608/11020.html
When I was in college I wanted a Vespa but my parents thought they were too dangerous.
The other thing I've thought about is an electric golf cart for just tooling around the area.
KC, your parents were right - I'm just too stupid to listen to advice like that from my own mother - and I had a hip resurfacing two years ago as a result. Some folks in my neighborhood use golf carts to get from here to there - but then aside from neighbors' homes and the little country club across the street, there's nowhere within about 3 miles in my neighborhood to go, and no one is crazy enough to take a golf cart out onto Rt. 19.
If you are in any way, shape or form a fan of the Boston Sports Scene, you must check this link out now. It is the closest we will come to personally meeting with the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit...
An electric cart gets me into fabulous downtown Guerneville to shop and dine. I also think we need a cocktail cart (think ice cream truck) that could go around the neighborhood at cocktail time....especially in the summer. The little tinkle of the margarita wagon would be a welcome addition.
LOL - I can just see all the adults running out to stop the margarita cart. You figure it would have Mexican music playing througha loudspeaker to signal its approach?
thanks for the link anonymous. answered some of my questions. but if she successfully transfers 26 million to him, won't BHO owe HRC more than the debt retirement?
BTW, re extraordinary life support attempts, be aware of organ harvesting profiteers...grisly, but true in some cases.
"First-time filmmaker Katrina Browne makes a troubling discovery — her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine fellow descendants set off to retrace the Triangle Trade: from their old hometown in Rhode Island to slave forts in Ghana to sugar plantation ruins in Cuba."
It's a fascinating look at how her family first discovered their past and how they sought to confront it. I think she made prescient points about reconciliation with the past that would serve not only current race relations but I think gender relations as well.
I also think we need a cocktail cart (think ice cream truck) that could go around the neighborhood at cocktail time....especially in the summer. Katherine Graham Cracker June 25, 2008
Good idea. Now we just have to decide what time cocktail hour starts.
Obama's "Certificate of Birth" needs to checked out. Why all the questions? Because there are reasons to doubt the authenticity of what has been provided.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Was Obama's "Certificate of Birth" manufactured?
"From a detailed analysis of the image and the text, it looks like it was created by a graphics program, and is not a true copy of an original, certified document."
Nick..How do you know I'm not running for President?
I'm qualified..
Natural Born Citizen (citizen from birth..location irrelevant)
Meet age 35 minimum requirement
Have lived in U.S. to meet Constitutional requirement
KGC....
margaritas!....... YES..... and some good old vine zin on those trucks too....
a couple good friends went to Iceland a few years ago..... they LOVED it....
said it was cheap.... the people were super friendly.... and sharing drinks while bathing in the hot springs was priceless.....
and Pogo.... living in a rural area, I would have the same problem with a golf cart.... the only road to take me anywhere would be waaaaay tooo dangerous....
John McCain had a town hall conference call with 4500 randomly selected Democrats and independents in South Florida.
Very creative and pushes the message that Obama is scared to engage in an uncontrolled forum like the town hall format.
It was an article I read on the McClatchy site. I'm in Missouri. If they had called, with 4500 questions to chose from , I doubt they would have picked any of the questions I would like to ask.;-0
The other candidate for president, Ole B1 Bob, is running on a decidedly non libertarian stance toward immigration.
"A lack of border security allows foreign criminals, carriers of communicable diseases, terrorists and other potential threats to enter the country unchecked."
XR, stop that. You have me chuckling audibly in the middle of a deposition. I can just see trying to wind a huge rubber band to power a car every morning. :-)
"That has been the Republican playbook for the last eight years," said Sebelius, an Obama ally. ‘"He’s not qualified, he’s somebody who should scare you. He’s too liberaI.’"
The Kansas Democrat, often mentioned as a possible running mate for Obama, said those were all "code words" to try and make voters "uncomfortable."
"I don’t think anybody’s going to go directly at the race issue, but that’s going to be an underlying theme," she said in an interview this week.
Obama said much the same thing to an audience in Florida last week.
That looks like what he is trying to do.
My thought was how unlibertarian it was.
The libertarians had a chance to peel off a piece of the libertarian wing of the Republican party. Those that were wanting real change, worried about all the abuses to our civl rights, and the domination of religion but aren't going to vote for a liberal big government Democrat like Obama. It looks like they have blown their chance.
"sigh"
A viable third party, Kind of a political junkies dream, just like a brokered convention.
"I don't mean to suggest that we should deny the elderly medical care.... but to keep people alive with machines and tubes is, IMO, a way of denial.....

Hawaiian Official Quoted, Birth Certificate Challenged
"Janice Okubo, Director of Communications of the State of Hawaii Department of Health, told Israel Insider: “At this time there are no circumstances in which the State of Hawaii Department of Health would issue a birth certification or certification of live birth only electronically.” And, she added, “In the State of Hawaii all certified copies of certificates of live birth have the embossed seal and registrar signature on the back of the document.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"... the document proffered by Obama’s FightTheSmears site as evidence of his birth appears to be on the correct form, but it’s missing the embossed seal shown by the Insider, and it is also missing the registrar signature referenced by Ms. Okubo."
Y is any of this big bob barr government business a surprise to anyone?
They didn't call him B1Bob for 0. He made a career out of boosting the Military Industrial Complex. That isn't exactly making government wither away so that a thousand little mom and pop enterprises could bloom.
Btw, the ripuplican Supreme Court betrayed retardlican Alaska today by cutting regustlican XOM's debt in half. Take that, Senator stevens!
Faked certificate suggests that Obama may not be "natural born" US citizen
"The Obama campaign, however, continues to flaunt the unstamped, unsealed, uncertified document -- notably in very low resolution -- on its "Fight the Smears" website, with campaign officials vowing that it's authentic, sending the image around as "proof" to reporters, and inviting supporters to refer to it as they battle against supposed distortions and calumnies against their candidate. However, the campaign refuses to produce an authentic original birth certificate from the year of Obama's birth, or even a paper version with seal and signature of the "Certification of Live Birth." Nor has it even published an electronic copy with the requisite embossed seal and signature.
The failure of the Obama campaign to do so, and its willingness instead to put up an invalid, uncertified image -- what now appears to be a crude forgery -- raises the dramatic question of why the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate might have to hide."
This probably isn't the answer you are looking for but I don't think he became a libertarian.
Barr has always been a bit of a maverick and self promoter. I think he saw a opportunity to use the libertarian party much like Buchanan did the Reform party in 2000.
What are his objectives?
Much like Nader did in 2000, he feels that his party has betrayed it ideals and has strayed too far. It must be brought back and saved from itself.
Stray thought below
Both Nader and Barr's run show how Protestant Christian to the bone our country is.
The reason they ran was to destroy the party so it could be reborn in a more perfect form.
Ok, enough!
You have taxed both of my brain cells and they are now hallucinating.
I lost my Dad, it will be 31 years this Aug 7th to heart Attack .. his 3rd in 10 years, he was 49, 4 years younger than I am now ... he needed a heart by pass, 3 of his valves were damaged .. but in those days, they only did it in 2 places, Cleveland, Oh & Houston .. his insurance would have paid for the operation, but we were so poor back then, we didn't have the money for the trip up there or the 3 weeks for a Hotel for Mom to stay in ... I still miss him & talk to him all the time like he's here with me ..
Bear: Yes, that is true . probably why we aren't getting anyhelp for the middle class, no one can relate to living from one paycheck to the other ... Did you see her on Fox last night in an interview w/Greta??? I thought she looked bad & her head was shaking a lot while she talked .. makes ya wonder ...
JACK: Glad to see you back!! Enjoy the pictures of your garden .. thought aout taking you up on your offer of sharing photos of garden, but never have taken the picture .. Mom's garden with all her little figurines looks great this year .. I talked herinto letting me paint them to add more color & make them stand out more .. one of these day, I'll do it & hopefully her beautiful flowers are still in bloom, lol
I see you're on Mo, are you near any of the flooding, hope not .. here in the Greater Cinti/NKY, we worry over flood all the time since we've gotten a lot of the rain too ... Newport has a flood wall & so do the other 3 citiies near me here, so we don't ahve to worry as much, but a ways down stream & over in Cinti, they are having problems ...
======
There's been a lot of talk on TV about BHO's speach where he makes fun of what McCain/Rep. will try to do .. some say he's putting his foot in his mouth, with bringing up race again ... me, I just smile !:^}
Did the honorable Janice Okubo, whom you quote, at any time deny that her Department sent that copy of the certificate?
If she did deny that the FightTheSmears copy was sent by the State of Hawaii, then you might possibly have a case. Otherwise, you are falling for half truths.
States routinely provide inexpensive copies of records online. However, certified copies cost a good more. Senator Obama produced the usual copy showing how frugal he will be with the taxpayers dollar.
You do realize that they could request a new copy of the birth certificate now, get the embossed seal and have it signed at any time right?
I have multiple copies of my birth certificate and if you photo copy it or scan it, you can barely see the raised seal. Does that mean my certificate is forged as well?
Same thing when the questions about McCain came out...do you honestly think a candidate who was unable to meet a basic criterion for being able to run for president could make it on to one ballot, let alone all 50?
After looking at this person's site, I am wondering who would win the nutjob olympics this year? If only this person used their energy to promote a positive message for their candidate instead of trying to use smear an innuendo instead.
It reminds me of the joke that both Revs. Sharpton and Jackson have used...
What's the difference between a Republican and Democrat?
When you are down in a hole, the Democrat will drop you a rope to pull you out of the hole while the Republican will drop you a shovel...
Barr was about the biggest anti pot crusader around and I can't believe he changed his mind over the "big government intrusion of marijuana regulation."
I think someone got him to smoke pot or slipped him a cookie and he liked it. Plus he lost his seat campaigning on an anti-drug platform. He may have figured out most people think it is a stupid waste of money. I like that he changed his mind but it is such an enormous change, I would like to know more about the cause of it --- so we could do the same thing to other people.
I was taken somewhat by the following: "In recent days, several sources at the network told The Observer that they believe NBC News’ senior vice president, Mark Whitaker, is the most likely candidate to land the gig......Mr. Whitaker, who is African-American, joined NBC News in the aftermath of the Don Imus controversy, adding what many believed was some much needed diversity to the executive ranks at NBC News"
So I guess that may mean he won't also be the on air personality at 'Meet the Press'. (?)
From Mrs Clinton's fundraising email that I received today:
"...As you know, I had to loan money to my campaign at critical moments. I'm not asking for anyone's help to pay that back. That was my investment and my commitment because I believe so deeply in our cause.
But I do need your help paying the debts we accrued to others over the course of this campaign. We put everything we had into winning this race, and we came just about as close as you can.
I will never regret the energy, effort, and passion we put into one of the closest and most expensive primary contests in history. But I need your help to move on to the next phase of our journey together. ..."
The first paragraph is really interesting. I don't recall ever having seen somebody do that in the past when the amounts were so great.
HuffPo Reader Choose Ifill or Meddow to anchor Meet The Press

Citing his close personal and professional relationship with Tim Russert, veteran anchor Tom Brokaw has stepped up to lead Meet the Press through the 2008 election season. It's a good interim move to maintain the respect and high level of quality which the show has become famous for.

I was agreeing with you about this post yesterday afternoon, sorry, should have posted it firstl ... I went to fix supper & then didn't get back on line afterwards, or you might have understood better ... DUH to me, lol, will remember to posted what I'm posting to next time .. hmmm, wonder if arthritis can go to the brain, got in my neck, so it wouldn't have to move far , would explain all my memory problems & typos ...

From the links:
“At this time there are no circumstances in which the State of Hawaii Department of Health would issue a birth certification or certification of live birth only electronically.”

(All the Obama campaign has to do is show us the document. What are they hiding? For some possible answers, go to the links.)
Flatus, what's your take on it?
I keep hearing that Obama is helping with the debt, and hearing many other things too. I'm not sure whether to contribute or wait to see if he pays it. I wouldn't mind making a contribution toward the money she paid out of pocket too though..
Chloe: As of 3 years ago, I can no longer take any arthritis meds .. In fact, I can't take any good meds for the pain either .. I'm allergic to ALL narcotics & arthritis meds .. in fact, since I've taken so many different kinds of meds over the last 11 years, that my system is getting real senitive to medicines .. My Doc is afraid I might get to the point of not being able to take even the ones I'm tolerating now ...
I take 300mgs. of Ultram, which is as strong as you can go before going to narcotics .. I also take Zanaflex for the muscle spasms I get from the arthritis & stenosis ... I practically live with heating pad on my back, neck, lumbar, etc .. & use a massager too ...
Even then, some days, nothing helps .. it's one of the reasons I don't post much .. it's not comfortable to sit here in my chair .. need a new one, maybe one that has the massager in it .. yeah! that would be nice ...
But I try not to let it get me down & my daughter's friends tell her they can't believe how upbeat I am ... it's in my nature ... have always try too see the good in people & sitruations before the bad ... cause i figure, it doesn't hurt ya to be positive .. only if you're negitive all the time, now that can hurt you emotonally & phyically ...
ok, got to get ready, my daughter & her BF are taking me to dinner!! if I'm late she gets very upset w/me, lol
Nick...
I bet you don't know that Oregon Democrat campaigned every day for Hillary during her state's primary..... she reported her experience about it here on this blog..... and got called names by "you know who" for it..... she's a goddess, IMO....
Jamie.... glad to see you here....
we were wondering if you were taking a break from this place.....
Viv,
The reason I asked was because one tiny little naproxen (brand name Aleve, I think-I get generic) once in the morning and once at night works miracles. I don't know if you can take that or not. Also, Glucosamine with condroitin, (1500mg) a day also can work like a miracle. I had an elderly lady tell me she could hardly walk until she found the Glucosamine. It's in the vitamin department. Have you ever talked to your doctor about these?
I hate Rachel Maddow too.... the program would never be on the level, always biased.
Sooooo! the "racist" is in Europe to celebrate Nelson Mandela's birthday, not surprised. This however is not important to prince O-bot, just as the State of the Black Union, in New Orleans wasn't.
I have NEVER heard either one of the Obamas apologize for anything they or the campaign has said. He never apologized for the racial, guns, religion remarks only tried to explain it away, not for his connection to the landscammer Tony Rezko, not for his connection to fire and brimstone pastors, only tossed them under the bus. She has never apologized for her "proud of my country" remarks, or for starting the namecalling by dragging Hillary's private life into things,"if she can't run her own house, how can she run the WH," I guess now it's only "whitey," who has to apologize(Don Imus).
When Michelle Obama apologizes to Hillary for her nasty mouth, then, and only then, will I be convinced that they are human beings and not O-bots protected by the press.
"“In the State of Hawaii all certified copies of certificates of live birth have the embossed seal and registrar signature on the back of the document.”"
Duh, Why not ask them to turn it over and take a picture of the other side? Duh
Nick,
While you're hear and before I leave, I just want you to know I feel pretty crappy about saying anything to you about your post to someone else. You are always so supportive of me. And I can't tell you how much I always appreciate it.
I do have one question - Is there any reason to believe that Obama was not born in Hawaii?? I have seen questions about the documentation, but nothing that suggests that he was born somewhere else.
Nick....
gender neutrality is a great topic.....
I am a hand weaver and usually refer to myself as a craftsperson.... but sometimes I say craftsman.....
we usually refer to deities as "he"..... but will say "she" when we want to make a point..... sometimes the words just aren't adequate enough to convey our meanings.....
I know if I want to be gender neutral in all my conversations.... I'd have to be more vigilant..... I see your point.... you're concerned with equality for everyone..... I admire that.....
As you can see from your reproduction of my text, I didn't call anyone around here a nitwit.
However, if you are refering to my cataloguing of Gordo's regular and frequent references to, and hawking of, meaningless, but slyly accusatory items of non-news, then I respectfully disagree. I believe that tedious fallacy-mongering is the most correct Aristotelian category for the acts Gordo foists on us. The term gives the smallest possible set into which every item of Gordo's output for at least the last 2 weeks fits.
Hi all. Glad to see things getting back to normal here. Jack...good to see you back after your short hiatus, and Jamie I'm glad yours was even shorter than Jack's.
I'm sick of all this "Obama conspiracy" stuff about birth certificates, alleged church videos, alleged extramarital videos. It's just all so lame. It adds nothing to the debate.
Does anyone know if newly elected Congressmen and Senators are subject to FBI background checks before they take office? Just so they can serve on committees with access to classified materials, etc. If the answer to that question is "yes" it should put all the Obama conspiracy theories to rest. I mean, this type of stuff would pop right up and be easily resolved in such a check.
I looked at the links, and I am sorry, but there is no story there. Who did What, When, Where, and How? And, if possible, to What end. That is a story.
Name the crime and pick the villain. ID the suspects, show the damage, display the fingerprints, trace the money, compare the log books, map the trail.
All you have is a guess of a possibility of a maybe, sort of. Go find your Deep Throat, or get off the pot, please.
Maybe that is why Obama never held hearings for his sub committee. He wasn't allowed access to classified material. It now makes perfect sense.
Keep posting Gordo, if some don't care for it , they can use the scroll bar.
It would be a boring blog if it was limited to only comments that were in agreement and self-congratulatory. If anyone wants that, there is a place they can go to, with just a couple clicks of the mouse.
wow, i don't know exactly what changed or how it changed, but i sure am finding the threads more readable and helpful these days. thanks to all for that. although i can't decide if nitwit is an ad hominem (TWO WORDS) attack or not. think we need an A-DH Tribunal to decide such weighty matters.
The answer is no. The people may elect anyone the people want to elect.
Now I do believe that by common agreement and possible ethics rules, those members considered a "risk" are not appointed to certain sensitive committees. Now whether or not investigations are requested by leadership may be another matter. What privacy rights or legalities might apply I haven't a clue.

By the way, thanks so much to all those here who enthused about the John Adams series. I went out and bought it Sunday, and have been watching an episode a night. It's just awesome. Laura Linney's performance is worth the whole experience.
Wondering, though, whether McCullough's book was more understated about the central role Adams played in ramming through the Declaration. Boy...the movie makes it look like he was the Big Cheese, and Thomas Jefferson is portrayed as the 1776 version of a "lurker." I know Jefferson was kind of a weirdo, but I don't think he was THAT weird.
Jack - glad you showed up. Everyone was getting so worried I was teetering on the edge.
Frankly, I think Gordo should be left alone. I dont' think he hurts anyone. You don't have to read him unless you want to teach him your idea of logic. It 's just frustrating you.
C-SPAN has a guy on now named Gene Healy who has written a book called "The Cult of the Presidency"
and I'm so impressed. He's talking about John Yoo right now. This guy is something else - very calm and sane.
He says he usually agrees with the criticisms from the party not in power. HA! He also mentions the presence of 'situational constitutionality' - sounds like a great book, but too great for me to read. I would never sleep again, but hold conversations in my head
with all sorts of people.
The fires in ca are numerous, but I guess it's the one in Napa that's causing our haze. I woke up in the middle of the night smelling the smoke, and just now opened my sliding pation door. Boy.
Greenspan supposedly said in his memoir that anyone who is willing to do what it takes to become elected as president is therefore automatically not fir to be president.
Chloe: I tried all the over the counter meds for years, Aleive, when it first came out, got free samples at the Drug Store i worked for .. didn't help at all ...
I'd been having problems with my Lumbar section since '79 when I was pregnant w/my Daughter, then, was told it would go away, but it just got worse .. I wasn't one to go to the Doctors for every little ache & pain, was told growing up, suck it in & go on, by my Dad, lol .. But when I had that first spasm at work .. that brought me to my knees & scared everyone there,
I went ..
I don't just have arthritis though .. I've got Lumbar Stenosis:
That can tell you about that it if you don't know .. easier than trying to explain something, bad memory & all, lol
I Do take those, along with some other Vitamins & Herbs .. I just started on a program of several Herbs, only been 3 days, so can't say if it's going to work or not, but I'm going to try ... I also exercise & do stretching to keep me limber & can help if it's not raining .. ya know how rain is on the bones, lol

You know, PP, that's the main reason I DO NOT like BHO .. he's been so arragant through this whole process .. I worked in retail for 30 years & you get a feeling about people .. hell, I am a people person, think that's why my disablity is so lonely .. but anyway, sorry, my mind wonders sometimes, lol
But A Man, or Woman for that matter, that can not say they are sorry .. naw .. not trustworthly to me ...
Plus, there was NO REASON to bring up Hillary's personal life .. that was a very low blow ... trash talk ... there won'y ever BE an apology from those 2 // IMHO ...
Jack...which in turn reminds me of a phrase I picked up working for KCS during summers in the east yards. It was sung like a nursery rhyme whenever undesirable new work orders were handed down, particularly later in the afternoon:
"Tell someone that gives a f_ _ _
Gives a f_ _ _
GIVES a f_ _ _
Tell someone that gives a f_ _ _
All the ding-dong day"
The railroad yards in the east bottoms of Kansas City were a very strange workplace, with strange social hierarchies and norms.
True story: There was a tough-as-nails, fiftyish guy named "Bob" who worked on one of the crews. No one liked him. He was always bitter and cranky and was never nice to anyone. Kept to himself, and would kick anyone's ass who made trouble with him. He also happened to be gay, which of course in that blue-collar environment led to the inevitable sobriquet "Queer Bob." Well, there was also a very popular Mexican crane operator named "Sal", who barely spoke a lick of English, and always had a look in his eye like he'd just as soon hit you with a spike maul as talk to you. But he was popular nonetheless. He was one of the boys, very much a virile presence in the work crews.
Anyway, one day...Sal corners Bob in one of the toolsheds down in the yards, and proceeds to take him to town, doggy-style. Word of the incident spread quickly. But of course, the whole societal take on it among the section gangs was "Can you believe Queer Bobby? He let Sal screw him in the a_ _!!"
Not a word of judgement or any questioning about what Sal did. Sal got a free pass. It was all about Bob.
Sorry if that story was too crude. It just came to mind thinking about my old summer job.
damn......looking for redd foxx stuff I came across Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts.......but as I watched, it became more and more unpostable.......lol..........I was in the house band at a beach pavillion in 66, 67, 68......and i worked doug's shows maybe a dozen times......

We are social creatures. As a farm boy I got to see how social creatures such as chickens or cows work with each other. There is always a hierarchy and some body gets to be on the bottom. We like to think we are rational thinking beings, created in the image of God. But we behave a lot like that herd of cows
1) No matter how hard you try, you can't baptize cats.
2) When your mom is mad at your dad, don't let her brush your hair.
3) If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person.
4) Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold a tomato.
5) You can't trust dogs to watch your food.
6) Don't sneeze when someone is cutting your hair.
7) Never hold a dust-buster and a cat at the same time.
8) You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.
9) Don't wear polka-dot underwear under white shorts.
10) The best place to be when you're sad is Grandpa's lap.
GREAT TRUTHS THAT ADULTS HAVE LEARNED:
1) Raising teenagers is like nailing jelly to a tree.
2) Wrinkles don't hurt.
3) Families are like fudge...mostly sweet, with a few nuts
4) Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
5) Laughing is good exercise. It's like jogging on the inside.
6) Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fibre, not the toy.
GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT GROWING OLD
1) Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
2) Forget the health food. I need all the preservatives I can get.
3) When you fall down, you wonder what else you can do while you're down there.
4) You're getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking chair
that you once got from a roller coaster.
5) It's frustrating when you know all the answers but nobody bothers to ask you the questions.
6) Time may be a great healer, but it's a lousy beautician.
7) Wisdom comes with age, but sometimes age comes alone.
THE FOUR STAGES OF LIFE:
1 -- You believe in Santa Claus. 2 -- You don't believe in Santa Claus.
3 -- You are Santa Claus. 4 -- You look like Santa Claus.
SUCCESS:
At age 4 success is . . . not peeing in your pants.
At age 12 success is . . having friends.
At age 17 success is . . having a driver's license.
At age 35 success is . . having money.
At age 50 success is . . . having money.
At age 70 success is . .. . having a driver's license.
At age 75 success is . . having friends.
At age 80 success is . . . not peeing in your pants.
Pass this on to someone who could use a laugh.
Always remember to forget the troubles that pass your way;
BUT NEVER forget the blessings that come each day.
Have a wonderful day with many smiles
Take the time to live!!!

And eat dessert first!
Good posts guys, funny. Nice to have Sturg & Jack back .
Portland's KOIN has a story this evening about the Oregon Democratic Party angry about Senator Gordon Smith (R) running ads indicating he has worked well with the annointed one and Governor Kulongoski (D)
I imagine there will be a story on the website later.
Smith pretends he is a Democrat just before election each time..I think he is in great danger this year.
Nick..no sweat at all. I didn't take anything you said the wrong way. I'm just riffing, and thinking I'm probably getting a little boring with my TS Eliot routine. But I do love him so.
Carry on.
this old dude, my favorite clubowner of all time, who owned the club i worked in denver used to compare musical groups to chickens in a barn yard..........he'd ax me if I ever heard of a "pecking order" and say moojicians are like chickens.....they pick one out amongst 'em and jist start peckin' on 'im.....
caint hep it.......he was a sage old brush.........

Notice that there is not as many entries as there were during the primaries. It's slow now until the convention. So we need some disagreements like we had before. Maybe the PUMA group will stir up the pot on Friday so that we don't just discuss how Hillary and Obama looked together.

Nick: You are correct about interventional radiology as a useful temporary "fix" for lumbar pain. The procedures are also sometimes performed by anesthesiologists ... depends upon the hospital.
I totally enjoyed your discussion about the various types of birds. I am absolutely pig ignorant about large migratory birds, but I do know that on my few trips to Galveston -- years after the big hurricane -- that the bird sanctuary part of the island seemed teeming with them.
On the subject of Hillary, Obama, and campaign debt. I too received Hillary's e-mail and wish I could manage to help her out more...just not possible. I then received two phone calls from persons volunteering for Obama who seemed to feel they knew me (I hate it when obviously very young people call me by my first name on the telephone)...and I carefully explained to them that if I had any excess funds I would donate them to Sen Clinton to help her pay off her debt. It appears to me that she is trying to manage most of this herself, but I could be wrong.
Corey: Didn't you see it?! OMG it was amazing. Safin looked like the Safin of old...only not a single outburst or temper tantrum. Djokovic just got overwhelmed by power and precision.
Viv - Sorry to hear of your arthritis and no way to deal with it. I have some but nothing like what you have. The one thing I hae heard abouot that you didn't mention is
acupuncture. I once worked with a man who swore by it. He had a limp, but said he had tried everything there was to try, and acupuncture was the only help he had.
He was an engineer, not someone who seemed ready to believe whatever he wanted to believe.
After a week in my sister's cabo condo with its gorgeous rock floors and walking along the concrete everywhere else, it took me a full week to calm the pain in my "good" hip - the other is titanium and has no nerves. When this current heat wave started to break down, the change is the weather started it up again. I don't need rain, just a change. We went from about 100 to 85 basically overnight. I've been walking with a cane for the last three days, and seem to be almost home free. One thing I'm not ready for now is another surgery and 3 months of recovery.
It's insult to injury, isn't it, the way pain intrudes into your life? I don't like pain meds cuz I can talk myself into ignoring some pain simply so I can participate, so I count on my pain to tell me when something's serious.
Viv, excuse for butting in. I have read some things about Interventional Radiology for stenosis but I may be wrong. Excuse the drive by.

=======================
NP, Nick .... no one has mentioned that .. the only thing my Doc has said, is surgery, but he know how afraid iam of that ... I've known people who had that surgery & they all told me not to do it ... that where they actually go into the spine & scrap the walls to open the spine more .. ewww give me chills thinking of that ...
What all does that entail ?
viv
bettyboo: "I count on my pain to tell me when something's serious."
It hurts my heart to see that post. If your doctor has assured you that your condition is stable, then please take your pain meds. Sometimes it's the only way to break the pain cycle.
Does anybody think he may announce Hillary as a VP on Friday? That would be a shocker. I think the only way he would pick her is if everyone else says no way but that is slim to none.
Viv: Do everything you can to avoid surgery. Please.
Interventional Radiology or anesthesiology depends on what your condition is. If it's a disc, an interventional radiologist can "snip" part of the protruding disc and relieve the pain. Otherwise, injections in the affected area can relieve the pain for up to six months.
"What we all need is a "Living Will" that outline how we want to be treated when we are in a similar situation. If nothing else, it will make your survivors decisions easier."
Exactly right Dooty -- we had the same experience with my mother. The paramedics said they had no choice. When my father was dying, his doctor had a talk with him and explained what was in store. If he died in the hospital, extraordinary measures would be taken. If he moved to a nursing home, and my mother could just "let it happen" -- well, it was up to my dad. He immediately checked out of the hospital and went to the nursing home. Died peacefully a couple of weeks later. That was in the '70s....I don't think people had really heard of living wills yet. But thank God for that doctor.
anonymous: Oh no ... I am waiting to see if they call again. They keep sending me mail, even though I send it all back.
If I am called again I plan to explain that I am waiting for Sen Obama to apologize to the former President. And then...who knows what I might say?
Patsi: As someone who spent 30 years in the business part of the medical industry, I have told everyone I know that if I suddenly collapse and appear not to be breathing that they are absolutely not to call 911 for at least 30 minutes and that they're to explicitly state that I appear to be dead. As long as there is hope that a patient can be revived the paramedics and doctors must at least try...and even a very short hospital stay can cost many more thousands than one might imagine.
Bear -- thanks for the reminder of that PBS show. Damn...I was planning on watching....guess I'll be ordering it from PBS. I saw a preview and it was horrifying.
Do you really believe that Bill is going to go all out? Maybe if Obama is getting hit hard by the press they may send him out to say something to get the press off their backs and onto his since he's used to it.
Your primary physician usually has a form you can fill out that declares exactly what procedures you want or don't want in the event you are not concious. It is a simple "check the option" for when certain procedures are to be used or refused.
It includes everything from pain medication, to feeding tubes, to resuscitation, to transfer to hospice etc.
A copy is kept by your physcian with your medical records, a copy can be filed with the main hospital in your area, and a copy kept at home with your legal documents.
Jamie: Yours is a good suggestion about filing a copy of one's living will with one's doctor or the local hospital. I had not thought of that. I have several copies scattered among friends and family ... if one has a primary physician or a hospital medical records file, it would probably be a great idea to make sure they had a copy on file.
Jack: Were you surprised that he disagreed? I was. I will have to read the opinion, but my first thought was that so few states have such laws that it might well be considered cruel and unusual punishment to employ the death penalty for that type of crime.
Beth: When I was diagnosed , it was only in my Lumbar, the arthritis & stenosis .. but since winning my ssdi case, I had another MRI .. this time of my entire back & neck .. the arthritis has moved all the way up with Stenosis now on both sides of my neck ...
I have a very high threshold of pain, even my Doc is surprised I can get by on Ultram .. don't know why, but always have been able to take a lot, ignoring it .. that's why I didn't go until the spasms ... but anyway .. I asked my Doc about it & he told me to try it .. I went to the appointment, but didn't have it done, the doctor was fighting with my insurance company, so he wouldn't do it .. lost it not long after ..
last fall, asked him again about it .. it seems in the years since I asked him, he did sent several patients to have it done, but it didn't help .. so he told me only as a last resort .. I'm making an appointment to see a Chiropractor, since I've fallen several times in the last 2 years .. Doc's hoping he can help me some with the pain ... especailly since I keep telling I feel like I need to be put on a rack & stretched, lol
vadaryl: I regard Nader as a rather sad character. To have gone from a hero to a goat as he did after the 2000 election ... and, really, let's be honest about it ... it was really more the fault of the media than of Nader that Gore lost.
Viv: Have you asked your doctor about whether you might be able to use a hanging bar? ... I have a bar installed across the doorway in my bedroom and I just grab it and hang for a few minutes every day ... it does wonders for typists' neck but it might exacerbate your condition. Still, it won't hurt to ask.
Viv: Do everything you can to avoid surgery. Please.

My disc are deteriorating & we tried the shots back 2000 .. had 2 treatments, one lasted 3 days, the 2nd. y never took & I got sick .. am allergic .. my Aunt gets them every 4 months, no problem ..
Like I said, can take a lot of pain, except when the art moves into a new area .. that's rough for a few weeks until I can get a handle of it .. to tell you the truth, I don't think I'd know how to act, after all these years, to not have the pain .. I too listen to my body to tell me if something's wrong .. I've also got other health issue, but that's another story, lol ..
Texas Darlin' and the Mystery of the Birth Certificate
"At first, we thought people were crazy for looking into Obama's birth certificate, but it's always struck us as odd that his campaign won't just produce his official birth certificate from Hawaii. Why is something as simple as establishing his exact date, time, and place of birth such a giant question mark? Daily Kos and Obama's own site both posted what appears to be a photoshop-doctored document, missing the Hawaiian state seal and the Registrar's signature. Both are present on an actual Hawaiian birth certificate.
Texas Darlin', posting at NoQuarterUSA.net, has been following up on this, and every day seems to find another unanswered question about Obama's actual birth."
Maggi - Oh, don't worry. I also have a high pain threshold. When I tore out my acl, I couldn't tell the er doc and nurse where it hurt when they pressed all overf my knee and calf. I felt kinda silly, but I couldn't say.
I haven't even gone to the doc for this stuff lately - I hate going cuz I feel as if I'm whining. I've taken some aspirin with this but not much. If this pain had stayed as it was, I'd be going in soon, but it's getting so much better I know it's the weather and sitting in this damn chair. I have a new chair but gotta get it put together.
Believe me, I do know there is some pain you have to do something about.
Viv - I guess I'll just say good luck, as you're taking such good care of your self.
I have no idea what to think of Obama's statement today. Just strange. Maybe he is taking advice from Claire McCaskill. It is the silly kind of pandering she did to people that never believed her and were never going to vote for her.
To maggisd and jack:
As one who is against the death penality, I was upset that Obama added
another crime to the list of those punishable by death in this country. Obama
sounded more like Bush with his take on this one.
I know that child rape is a horrible crime, but killing someone for it won't solve
anything. Statistics already show that capital punishment is not a deterrent.
Pediphiles are seriously sick and many should probably be locked away in a
mental institution forever, but wacked by the government, no.
Right now, there are most likely innocent people on death row. Until our
judicial system is fair or can guarantee that a person is guilty, we need to
suspend capital punishment. In nearly all intellectually advanced countries,
the death penalty is history.
I think I just added another reason to my list of reasons why I'm not voting for Obama.
To Oregon Democrat:
Hi! I haven't seen you around here much. Gee! Obama isn't leading by
much in your Oregon is he?
I check in each day and read posts..there is a lot of gunk on the blog so I don't participate much.
I don't know how accurate polls are. The Dems should win here; my point is that the state can't be taken for granted since it has a real independent streak and the voting history shows it won't be a cakewalk for anyone.
You make an interesting point about the death penalty and I would love it if someone could explain to me the following:
Why is it that a vast majority of people who are pro choice are also against the death penalty?
Why are most anti abortion folks pro war and pro death penalty? If you are pro life, should you be opposed to all forms of killing?
So far, Bill Maher's pro death postion, ie in favor of abortion rights, war, death penalty and assisted suicide, seems to be the easiest, intellectually pure position to take...
I know I'm rather late to the party, but I just wanted to add my bit to the cocktail hour thread.. here in Montreal, "cocktail hour" has been replaced by "cinq-a-sept" (pronounced sank a set). It sounds much more glamourous than it really is. Every dive in town now has a 'cinq a sept". :)
Bear - as an add on to your points, I see anti-abortion
people who grant each un-born child the right to receive "the gift of life". Of course, when that child is born into misery, pain, poverty, abuse, loneliness, and starvation -oh, yes, a drug addiction - and that child grows up to be a sociopath who kills wantonly, that same child is judged a monster who must have the same "gift of life" taken away by the state. If anti-abortion people were extremely active in making that child's life truly a gift, that would say something, but it isn't the case all too often. Giving the "gift of life" to an infant is like giving a car to a paraplegic.
Life isn't a gift - it's a responsibility.
I'm pro-choice and not necessarily anti-death penalty.
I'm just tired of hearing people talk about the "gif t of life" and thinking that's enough.
Tylenol - a propos cinq-a-sept, no one has suggested good ole vodka and oj.
I love the sank-a-set (cinq-a-sept), the cocktail hour at Craig's blog.
I think I'll order a glass of white wine. Anyway, cheers!
I was born in Canada, but have lived in southern California since I
was three. I have and do spend a lot of time in Canada on visits and
vacations, though. I love the country and consider myself a Canadian-
Californian. I stayed in Montreal for four months once and adored it.
The French men were continental and romantic. They kissed my hand and said, "enchante" (enchanted).
To Bear:
You're getting too philosophical for me with the pro-life vs capital punishment
debate. I don't see pro-life as for abortion. For me, it's for choice. I believe
that a woman has the right to choose. The death penalty, in my mind, is entirely different. Taking the life of a living, breathing human is anti-intellectual and barbarian as far as I'm concerned--executing someone as an audience watches is so Roman coliseum, a blood sport.
In regard to pro-choice, we can debate the whole when life begins argument, but, frankly, that's a no win proposition. As far as Bill Maher is concerned, he
is not credible as a source. His hypocritical and misogynistic treatment of Hillary Clinton transformed him into a jackal for me (and I once was a great fan of his).
patsi......doug clark and the hotnuts toured extensively, from chapel hill, I think, they were known pretty much all over the states without ever having had anything played on radio....

I think a trip to France to take in the Tour de France , sitting in the Pyrenees on a comfy blanket with baguettes and gouda and smoked fish and lots of Evian and juices , as I watch the cyclists wind through the mountains...yes, that would be a nice break for a 300-times-over millionaire!!

mornin' all.
bethyboo - the birds you were talking about this morning are called cattle egrets. They are herons, and are a lot smaller than great Blues - one of which summmered in the pool below a low head dam I pass on the way to work until last year whenit did not return for the summer season - and bigger than little green herons, which are much rarer than the cattle egret.
http://www.nhptv.org/natureworks/cattleegret.htm
Florida is lousy with all manner of herons and other long legged wading birds. I always used to joke that the best place to birdwatch in FL was the Homestead dump - the place was practically overrun with just about every imaginable wading bird - egrets, herons, flamingos, you name it. If only the olfactory sense was as pleasant as the visual one there it would be a birdwatcher's paradise.
Dex, have a nice trip. Invite a friend and fellow cyclist wine lover francophile. I could give you a recommendation.

One of my favorites was the little blue heron.

"On the average day, (experts) think it takes 18 hours...But if the wind's not right, it can take them 24-48 hours to cross. They fly nonstop. It's 600 miles or more..sanctuaries are so crucial.

Flatus,
I hear ya - I only got a couple of mailings from Clinton, but was on the e-mail list.

TP,
Shouldn't Gordon be able to site any source he wants. We all consider the source quoted when reading posts, and will know whether or not we want to read it.

TP from CT/NC ---------------------
"My point was that even in your zeal to knock Obama down, quoting Carl Rove as a character witness against him is obviously a flawed strategy."
From my post:
" ... Rove referred to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, as "coolly arrogant."
"He's the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why is this important? I'm not trying to use Carl Rove as a character witness against Obama.
This shows us one of the ways the Repubs plan to attack Obama. He is an elitist. A snob - SNOBama.
If what I post upsets you, how will you survive the 527s?

And maybe this is why I am still outraged at the treatment Bill Clinton got during this campaign: the 90s, with Clinton in the White House, were the best working years I ever had.

Birth Certificate Conundrum for Obama
1. What happened to the original birth certificate that Obama found in the 1970’s?
2. If the original was lost, why did he wait until 2007 to order a replacement?
Or did he? Surely Obama must have needed a birth certificate before now?

The Crypt

my dad had his final heart attack in the middle of the night at home in his bed.

Clinton has 26 million she can't use to pay primary debts.. They are trying to work out a trade.
Obama isn't doing Clinton any favors and vice versa.

how will the "trade" mentioned above work? won't she need to get waivers/oks from the original donators? can she use it for vp campaign expenses if on ticket? do MSM know about this and don't want to rock boat? where's jamie when we need her?

There are lots of reasons to criticize the annointed one, but the birth certificate issue is not one of them.
I don't have a copy of my birth certificate..I did years ago, but don't know what happened to it. No one in the family has the original.
I guess I'll request one online from the county of my birth..

A riskier route would be to ask her general election donors to redirect — or “redesignate,” in campaign finance parlance — their general election contributions to Obama’s presidential campaign as part of a deal under which the Illinois senator would ask his donors to give to Clinton to help her pay down her debt.

An electric cart gets me into fabulous downtown Guerneville to shop and dine. I also think we need a cocktail cart (think ice cream truck) that could go around the neighborhood at cocktail time....especially in the summer. The little tinkle of the margarita wagon would be a welcome addition.

On a different note,
I don't know if any of you caught P.O.V. on PBS last night but it was a fascinating program called "Traces of the Trade"
http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2008/tracesofthetrade/?campaign=pbshomefeatures_4_povbrtracesofthetrade_2008-06-25
This is a brief description of the program
"First-time filmmaker Katrina Browne makes a troubling discovery — her New England ancestors were the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. She and nine fellow descendants set off to retrace the Triangle Trade: from their old hometown in Rhode Island to slave forts in Ghana to sugar plantation ruins in Cuba."
It's a fascinating look at how her family first discovered their past and how they sought to confront it. I think she made prescient points about reconciliation with the past that would serve not only current race relations but I think gender relations as well.
I highly recommend viewing this program.

The Kansas Democrat, often mentioned as a possible running mate for Obama, said those were all "code words" to try and make voters "uncomfortable."
"I don’t think anybody’s going to go directly at the race issue, but that’s going to be an underlying theme," she said in an interview this week.

Okubo."

"become a libertarian"

Corey: sorry to hear about your Dad ..

Gordo,
Did the honorable Janice Okubo, whom you quote, at any time deny that her Department sent that copy of the certificate?
If she did deny that the FightTheSmears copy was sent by the State of Hawaii, then you might possibly have a case. Otherwise, you are falling for half truths.
States routinely provide inexpensive copies of records online. However, certified copies cost a good more. Senator Obama produced the usual copy showing how frugal he will be with the taxpayers dollar.

GORDO,
You do realize that they could request a new copy of the birth certificate now, get the embossed seal and have it signed at any time right?

Jamie, that site you linked sure gave a good description of
exactly what their bureau chief will be expected to accomplish. It's quite an assignment.

I keep hearing that Obama is helping with the debt, and hearing many other things too. I'm not sure whether to contribute or wait to see if he pays it. I wouldn't mind making a contribution toward the money she paid out of pocket too though..

You seem to ignore the word 'only' in the text you find so important.
Did or did not Janice Okubo deny that the State of Hawaii provided a copy of Barack Obama's birth certificate?
It's a fair question.

Viv,
The reason I asked was because one tiny little naproxen (brand name Aleve, I think-I get generic) once in the morning and once at night works miracles.

When Michelle Obama apologizes to Hillary for her nasty mouth, then, and only then, will I be convinced that they are human beings and not O-bots protected by the press.

gender neutrality is a great topic.....
I admire that.....

anonymous,
As you can see from your reproduction of my text, I didn't call anyone around here a nitwit.

The answer is no. The people may elect anyone the people want to elect.
Now I do believe that by common agreement and possible ethics rules, those members considered a "risk" are not appointed to certain sensitive committees.

Boy.

We are social creatures. As a farm boy I got to see how social creatures such as chickens or cows work with each other. There is always a hierarchy and some body gets to be on the bottom. We like to think we are rational thinking beings, created in the image of God. But we behave a lot like that herd of cows

Summary of Life
GREAT TRUTHS THAT LITTLE CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED:
1) No matter how hard you try, you can't baptize cats.
2) When your mom is mad at your dad, don't let her brush your hair.
3) If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person.
4) Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold a tomato.
5) You can't trust dogs to watch your food.
6) Don't sneeze when someone is cutting your hair.
7) Never hold a dust-buster and a cat at the same time.
8) You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.

Just spent a very enjoyable 45 minutes reading all your posts from today...quite a lively discussion and sorry I missed it.

"What we all need is a "Living Will"
Your primary physician usually has a form you can fill out that declares exactly what procedures you want or don't want in the event you are not concious. It is a simple "check the option" for when certain procedures are to be used or refused.
It includes everything from pain medication, to feeding tubes, to resuscitation, to transfer to hospice etc.
A copy is kept by your physcian with your medical records, a copy can be filed with the main hospital in your area, and a copy kept at home with your legal documents.

last fall, asked him again about it .. it seems in the years since I asked him, he did sent several patients to have it done, but it didn't help .. so he told me only as a last resort .. I'm making an appointment to see a Chiropractor, since I've fallen several times in the last 2 years ..

Obama leads McCain in Oregon by 3 points..
Posted by: Oregon Democrat | June 25, 2008 11:38 PM
Good Evening everyone,
To maggisd and jack:
Gee! Obama isn't leading by
much in your Oregon is he?

prof marcia,
I check in each day and read posts..there is a lot of gunk on the blog so I don't participate much.
I don't know how accurate polls are. The Dems should win here; my point is that the state can't be taken for granted since it has a real independent streak and the voting history shows it won't be a cakewalk for anyone.
Posted by: Oregon Democrat | June 26, 2008 1:21 AM
Prof Marcia,
You make an interesting point about the death penalty and I would love it if someone could explain to me the following:
Why is it that a vast majority of people who are pro choice are also against the death penalty?
Why are most anti abortion folks pro war and pro death penalty? If you are pro life, should you be opposed to all forms of killing?
So far, Bill Maher's pro death postion, ie in favor of abortion rights, war, death penalty and assisted suicide, seems to be the easiest, intellectually pure position to take...

Also, any chance of cinq-a-huit, or neuf?

Hello tylenol,
I love the sank-a-set (cinq-a-sept), the cocktail hour at Craig's blog.

Warning: This IS NOT a serious statement.
I hope that Bill Clinton will campaign for Obama, that he says something really outrageous and they have to fire him. Would that be great or what?
