Tom Brokaw's NBC special on Sunday, replacing what surely would have been another newsmaking "Meet the Press" with Tim Russert, got the job done.
With clips showing Russert at the top of his game, holding newsmakers accountable, Brokaw offered the tribute that the late host would prefer -- scenes of a serious journalist doing his job.
My guess is that Russert has had enough of the glowing personal tributes, and now wishes that his colleagues would honor his legacy by simply getting back to work.
Sorry, Tim, but I cannot resist adding my own small measure of devotion, yet another story of his personal touch. I last saw him a couple of weeks ago when I was walking out of the NBC Washington Bureau following an early-morning TV appearance.
Although it was barely dawn, Russert was typically full of energy and nearly sprinting toward the building as though late for something. But he stopped short as we passed, put his hand on my shoulder and asked, "How's your foot?"
I wasn't even aware that he knew I had broken my ankle a few months ago. He proceeded to ask several questions about my ordeal, eagerly comparing notes about his own ankle break last year and his troubles with sticking to an exercise regimen.
We parted ways without exchanging a single word about politics and the presidential campaign. Just a couple of guys comparing physical ailments as the sun came up. And going forward that is the Russert moment I will most treasure.

Comments
Tim Russert seemed to really despise the Clinton's and I always wondered why. If he had information about them that would have impacted the country, then as a professional journalist, he should have informed the public---if it was just a personal dislike, then as a professional journalist he should have hidden his feelings better.

Gallup Daily: Obama-McCain Race Returns To Statistical Tie With Obama Only 2 Points Ahead
"I have felt that both the Democratic party and the Republican party were on a mission.
Kill Hillary. Not literally but kill her chances of ever being president. Now that they have seemed to have done that I think both sides are standing back and saying..........Lord almighty.......We've been waiting for this day for 20 years and its finally here.
Now what?"

Tim Russert Was No Walter Cronkite
I am not a contrarian by nature and feel bad when I hurt someone’s feelings, but I have held off writing about NBC News’s Tim Russert, who passed away on Friday of a heart attack at age 58, because of the strange double standard we have about speaking ill of the famous dead.

I'm a journalist, though a small fish in a small pond. Russert certainly got under my skin sometimes, but perhaps that's a characteristic of a "real" journalist: getting the story out there, knowing some folks won't be happy with it. I probably disagreed with him as much as I agreed with him, but I always thought of him as the genuine article.

Agreed. So what? He never pretended to be anyone other than who he was. The two journalists had two very different jobs and styles and they were both great at what they did.

"I've written before about the Obamacan demand that Democratic money be brought under the Chicago Combine's control, but subsuming the entire DNC to a single candidate's campaign is both horrifying and fascinating, kind of like watching decomposition. As there are more confirmed details, I'll be writing more, but one little gem stood out for me, which is the way the state operations, the ones that promote the downticket candidates, are being
rolled up into the Obama operation."

If you were asked to guess when the word e-mail was coined, chances are you'd say perhaps a couple of decades back. Would it surprise you to learn that the first use of the word is recorded from around the time of Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)? Clearly, Emerson didn't use e-mail to send his manuscripts to his publisher. In fact, he couldn't even call his editor to ask when his next book was coming out -- there was no commercial telephone service then. In any case, if he missed e-mail, we can safely assume he didn't miss spam.
What was e-mail doing at the time when there were no computers, telephones or even promises of large sums of Nigerian loot? Well, the answer is that it was a different type of e-mail. That e-mail meant enamel, as in the glossy paint applied to metal, pottery, etc. In French, the word émailler still means "to enamel," not to send out a message using electronic mail. The word mail in electronic mail is of Germanic origin, meaning a bag.

Tess, Russert may have bbeen no Cronkite, but Cronkite was no Russert. I doesn't surprise me that Craig and Tim were great colleagues - they have many things in common - e.g. honesty, transparency... What the hell else could you ask of a political reporter? My wife asked me whether I thought Chris Mathews would step into his spot. My response was "Maybe he'll get to be the moderator of MTP, but he will never be a Tim Russert."

Say goodbye to the Electoral College
Despite its name, participants at a panel of the American Constitution Society calling for the repeal of a chunk of the Constitution is about as surprising as panelists at a butchers' trade union being leery of vegetarian cooking. No surprise, then, to find panelists urging the abolition of the electoral college.

I've never read Anglachel before, but that article points up something I have suspected for months now ... that the DNC as an organization had played favorites in the race.
If this move to bring the party under the control of the Chicago machine was actually decided months ago, then that is more important than one candidate. It is a threat to democracy itself and the well being of the country.

"First, let me say that Tim will truly be missed.... Everyone in TV and radio and blog land has talked about what a great man he was, so I will concentrate on what's next."
".....forget Matthews, Olbermann or Scarborough. All three of them, great as they are on MSNBC and with as much as they bring to the network, are all known to have their biases. Matthews has a tendancy to run at the mouth (and spit a lot), Olbermann is too controversial despite knowing SO much about everyone and every topic and Scarborough is too conservative to remain unbiased."

Ages and ages ago (or so it seems) Biden was my favored candidate simply because he looked at the history of Iraq and said, "divide it up". This is what the people have done for themselves that now is actually bringing peace.
If the central government strengthens enough and the sectarian provinces maintain local government control, we might be able to get out of there in fairly short order.

"is that wishful thinking or do you have much more faith in the Iraqi government than I do?"
It is not so much faith in the government except in the sense that Petraeus is making it possible for the old, natural divisions to happen with a minimum of violence.
The country was originally cobbled together by the British following WW I and it has been held together by dictators, spit, and baling wire ever since.
If some sort of central government that can split up the oil wealth and establish mutual interest decision making while leaving the provinces to their own devices (sort of a United States of Iraq), it finally may become stable. At that point it would only take a minimal to keep it from slipping into Civil War again.
Not easy, but not impossible either.

If Iwere the Dem Party officers, I would be very afraid of those other/neither numbers. jamie, the presence of 150,000 U.S. combat troops has to have a dampening effect on the violence there. You may be right about a central government and the oil revenue and a hands-off approach to the provinces leading to a relatively peaceful coexistence, but I don't know how we'd know whether it did without getting our troops out.
chloe, it's the republican mantra expressed by businesses (or vice versa) in the face of potential tax hikes, and there is probably a correlation between taxes and payrolls, but the bottom line is that businesses let go of people when their net profits drop - for whatever reason.

"but the bottom line is that businesses let go of people when their net profits drop - for whatever reason. "
Except that this is a sort of knee jerk, short term reaction that often works against the business in the long term.
The smart business figure out how to attract more customers to make up the difference and that often means hiring more people to provide better response and service to the client.
Unfortunately, for the US economy, corporations have been taking the lazy way out by going for cheaper and cheaper labor and less stringent restrictions with an ultimate reduction in quality and profits plus higher taxes and fees to compensate for the government having to care for those laid off.

Rendell, who plans to campaign on Obama’s behalf and raise money for him, said tonight’s event in Philadelphia is a joint fundraiser for Obama and the cash-strapped Democratic National Committee.
But in a sign of the urgency to raise campaign cash, Rendell said Obama didn’t want to reschedule tonight’s fundraiser, even though the governor warned him that many Philadelphia donors were headed to the New Jersey shore for the weekend. Posted by Champ | June 15, 2008 whenever
Absolutely NOT what I was saying. What I was saying is that if the "pro-life" movement is really about protection of babies, they would stop supporting cutbacks in welfare, nutrition programs and assistance for single parent families. On the one hand they want the mother to be Donna Reed; on the other hand they want the lazy "bitch" to get off her fat ass and find a job. By and large the pro-life movement loses interest once the baby is born and worse yet, fights programs to help the poor to raise their children with sufficient resources.

from the internals of the Gallup Poll
Although the margin between Obama and McCain is now similar to what it was in the last few weeks of the Democratic primary race, the structure of the race looks slightly different than at any other time this year as a result of the relatively high percentage of voters -- 15% -- not favoring either major-party candidate. This includes 7% of voters who say they are undecided and 8% who say they will not vote for either candidate (including 1% who volunteer they will vote for another specific candidate).
....As a result, the percentages of Americans now supporting Obama and McCain are near the lowest seen for either candidate since Gallup Poll Daily tracking on the Obama-McCain matchup started in early March, and well below the high of 48% achieved by each at them at various times.
The more people know him the less they like him

In small private businesses, profit is the goal. The increase of business taxes is what drives companies to areas with less tax burden, therefore the high-tax areas that most need the employment lose.
Also with every employee hired, tax liabilities go up, as with every employee fired. If one fired employee chooses unemployment. The increase unemployment tax for one unemployment claim is an increase 3.4% for a fiscal year. More claims and the rate goes up. So basically , you fire someone for failing at their position, and guess what?....you have to pay for that firing in increase tax liability for the next 12 months.
You can tax small companies to death, and then there is nothing left. It helps no one. On the other hand if the tax dollars went to good use, maybe it could be a positive.
I guess if you have you own business you would better understand th relationship between taxes, profitability and employment growth.

jamie - I didn't say it was good business practice, but it is what is happening. And UB makes good points about small businesses and taxes, although taxes don't necessarily force small businesses into death throes or relocation (although Gibson did relocate from MI to TN, for a number of reasaons, taxes may have been one).
In the guitar industry (electric) as an example, the big US players - Fender and Gibson reacted to loss of market share to imports beginning in the 60s and 70s by buying up struggling US and foreign manufacturers (e.g. Gretsch, Jackson, Charvel by Fender, Epiphone, Kramer, Steinberger, Tobias by Gibson), some of which were established and well respected instrument makers - mainly to get the people who worked for them - and by having off price instruments manufactured in Japan, Indonesia, India, South Korea and Mexico (and now China), often under their price point brand names like Squier and Epiphone. This resulted in fairly substantial cutbacks among US workers in the industry and fewer competitors, but established Gibson and Fender as the two (along with Rickenbacker, which has kept its production facilities in the US) viable US electric guitar manufacturers. Revenue drove those decisions for the most part. The US instruments are still the flagships of the two and fetch the highest prices - generally 3-4 times as much as the equivalent import models - but the quality of the imports are getting much closer to the ones made in the US.

Thanks for the Gallup poll info...as a Clinton democrat, not a Kennedy democrat, I am already bored by the choice for November. No matter what, Hillary sure added excitement and discussion to the primary process...enough to capture the attention of half of the dem party. Too bad this year was the struggle between the Clintons and Kennedys...otherwise, we may have some very different polling numbers.

Well, yesterday's barbecue went really well. Everyone had seconds and thirds, all the while praising the product fifteen hours in the smoker produced.
It really was good. But not something I want to do every week.
This morning I was reading the Journal and on page B6 found the following article:
Bacteria in Pork Showing Resistance to Antibiotics
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121358390555876401.html?mod=todays_us_marketplace
My curiosity turned to dismay then outrage as I red the article. What the devil are we being fed???
If I had read the report before the event, I would have probably tossed the pig and fed everybody my personal favorite, nice big bowls of raisin bran.

Jamie,
My grandfather used to use the term ofay and I always thought that was funny as a kid. But in general, black people call white people, white people. LOL Or white folks. All that "Honky" and "Whitey" or in the case of the police "Pigs", is the imagination of white people using outdated terms in order to interpret what black people think of them. It's almost a form of minstrelsy, if you think about it.

As we have all seen over the past two decade, the Republican Party has failed us in its major responsibility to put forth conservative candidates for the presidency. We can get into the specifics of why that has happened and perhaps come up with a viable plan of reform. But the bottom line is irrelevant if John McCain wins the upcoming election. You simply don't reform a winning political party.
So the real choice before politically experienced conservatives in this election is to further support the liberalization of the Republican Party by supporting the candidacy of John McCain, or not, and focus your electoral efforts in supporting your Congressional, state and local conservatives candidates.
In this election, given these choices, not voting for McCain will be a vote for change in the Republican Party, back to its conservative base. Voting for John McCain will only serve to prolong the inevitable change the party must undergo when the general public realizes its made a mistake and starts looking around for the right answers.
So as a Republican its your responsibility to vote divided. The Democrat in for president and Republican for Congressional Seats. It just makes more sense

While growing up and finally into adulthood, the words I used when referring to black people in a group were negro, then colored, then black. Have to admit I still find AA a bit clumsy, As individuals, I still prefer to call them by their names. : )
All things considered, I find the whole color idea a little odd unless you are talking about specific cultural groups for some sociological purpose.

Some interesting suggestions to host MTP...Aaron Brown is tops...a Pacific Northwest product (of course!). Another I'd like to see considered is Bill Moyers...probably too unabashedly left, but a good and honest man who could frame the show well. Tim Russert certainly began in politics on the left...not sure he ended up on the left, but he started there.... I think it's harder to remain on the left as you amass more wealth.

I see people complaining that Russert was biased against Hillary Clinton. I don't know why but I'm wondering if his long history in New York politics and his work for Daniel Patrick Moynihan had something to do with it.
Of course asking someone a question and expecting something other than a canned response is clearly bias. So isn't looking at a set of facts and making proper interpretations.

Over the past 2 years - when its stock price fell from $60 to $30, the company's value has doubled, and its invested capital has increased by $1B, its retained earnings have nearly doubled as it has bought back 150 million shares of outstanding stock. Whitman may be a republican, but an idiot, she is not. I wish she didn't support McCain.

Bear,
If you want to compare them, here are the transcripts for both the Obama and Clinton interviews with Tim Russert. You don't get the full flavor of the body language, but the questioning of Obama tended to be all smiles and soft ball questions answered with generalities while the questioning of Clinton was filled with frowns, repetitive stressed questions requiring specifics ... just not as friendly. Much the same attitude happened during the debate he moderated ... Leading questions almost containing answers for Obama and attack questions for Clinton.

I can understand AP having problems with some of the lazyer bloggers out there. But for the most part they aren't making money so AP will have trouble enforceing their copyright. Most of the good ones pull quotes and give links. They also add value to the quote by incorporating it into their own discussion. As Dogs post pointed out it is hard to give a feel of an article with just 39 words and just posting a link doesn't allow you tom address complex issues.

Posted by: EuroTom | June 16, 2008 11:03 AM
I just question the generalization of all in the Pro-Life 'movement', if it is a movement. There are social conservatives, economic conservatives, and political conservatives, and combinations of the 3 within the entire conservative framework.
Statement of the obvious to say that abortion is a wedge issue used to rouse the base, who may or may not subscribe to the limited social welfare you mentioned. I think a lot of Pro-Life social conservatives of lesser economic status may be favorable to liberal economic policies, though I make that statement with no numbers or research to back it up. Just a thought.
By the way, Tom,
I want to travel through Europe by myself in the upcoming few months. I was thinking of focusing my travels primarily around eastern europe to stretch my weak American dollar, though that may be an erroneous assumption.
Also, are there specific Eastern Bloc, Balkan, or Slavic countries/cities I should avoid out of safety concerns by virtue of the fact I will be alone? I realize this is a broad topic, but any input you had and had the motivation to convey would be appreciated. I only ask you because I noticed you discussing similar topics on yesterdays(?) thread. Thanks.

(Political Animal) PATTI SOLIS DOYLE....This is genuinely fascinating: Barack Obama has named a chief of staff to his eventual vice presidential nominee, and his choice is longtime Hillary Clinton confidante and former campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle. What's fascinating is not just that he made the choice he did, but that he made it even though he must know that it's going to whip up a frenzy of media speculation. Is this part of a rapprochement with Hillaryland? A payoff for endorsing him? A none-too-subtle wink to Hillary's supporters that maybe she's his choice for VP? A sign of genuine admiration for Solis Doyle's administrative talents? Beats me, but speculation is bound to run rampant.
Also of interest: when I looked up "confidante" to make sure I had spelled it right, I learned that it properly refers only to a woman. I had always thought it referred to anyone in which you regularly confided. You learn something new every day. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/06/16/politics/animal/main4184294.shtml

Thanks. That is the silver lining. I'm thinking about getting out my bike! :)
The problem around here (Marin Sonoma NorCal) is the budgets and routes of our mass transit have been cut back in the last few years. so even if you wanted to take the bus --there isn't one.
If I wanted to take public transportation to Santa Rosa
(about 20 miles) it would be an all day trip and I would have to return before 5p.m.

I have to remark that I really feel it speaks to the level of Bush's intelligence that only now, after 7 years in office, is he exploiting some of those types of perks of his job, and finding out that there are many enlightening cultural experiences to be had outside of Crawford, TX. (and that you don't need to bomb a country before you visit it.)
Posted by: champ | June 16, 2008 4:35 PM
Jack,
I paid 3.85 two days ago and 2.95 a few days ago with the help of my grocery card. They discount gas based on how much you spend in their store. They sell gift card too so if you need to buy something big, you could buy an AMEX/home depot / best buy/ whatever card there and also get the discounted gas. I think ( not sure) it is .10 cents off for every 50.00 you spend.
I love the reasons listed in the article : we moved our office from downtown to two miles from home, now we walk to work. Also, I am sign up to take motorcycle classes in August. My neighbor just got some sort of mo-ped - 90 mile to the gallon.

Does Nancy Pelosi have any idea how bad this sounds?
Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she wants the matter settled before Congress breaks for Independence Day at the end of next week, suggesting she is ready to bring the issue to a head.
"We want to pass a bill that will be signed by the president," she said. "And that will happen before we leave for the Fourth of July. So the timing is sometime between now and then. I feel confident that that will happen."
By all means, celebrate the birth of the nation by throwing aside the Fourth Amendment and passing the Protect AT&T Act. There's nothing like optics like that, in an election year, to show a Democratic Party embracing the politics of change. Here's a clue, any bill that will be signed by the president will suck for the American people and for the Constitution. Any bill that will be signed by the president should be unacceptable to every Member of the first branch of government--the one that created the law that Bush broke--and might possibly be struck down by the third branch.
There's this part that I particularly liked, too.
(Emphasis supplied.) How bad a Speaker has Nancy Pelosi been? Even now she craves the chance to cave in to the most unpopular President in history. Just unbelievable.

Ohio predictions 2004
"In Ohio, there have been 11 polls since October 15. Kerry led in 7, Bush led in 3, and 1 was tied. Average support was 47.2 percent for Bush and 48.3 percent for Kerry. Ralph Nader is not on the ballot. Turnout is going to be enormous and two federal judges ruled this morning that Republican political operatives cannot challenge voters in minority precincts. That was Karl Rove's last gasp in Ohio. The Buckeye state will go Democratic this year and no Republican has ever won a presidential election without carrying Ohio"

I am getting the sense that many people are afraid to say what they really think about Obama, for fear of being called a racist. As a test I have been talking with people at work about Obama. We have the perfect opening since we are just finishing up printing and binding a new book about Obama (a real fluff photobook). Anyway when I say something like ,well I have some doubts about him, everybody I have spoken to are saying they do too, and they probably won't vote for him. That includes a bunch of people that do not like McCain. I have no idea of these peoples politics but I was pretty suprised with the nearly uniform response, especially being in Massachusetts. I know this is not a scientific poll more of a Trail Mixer report, but contrary to the media lovefest, not everyone is big on the BO.

The sentiment reflected what another person in the immediate Clinton orbit described as "shock" that Obama would send such a strong signal that he is not considering Clinton as his runningmate so soon.

Bowmac, I think you and your informal survey are right. That's why I liked this article posted yesterday. It's a good read.
" It's Not Race, It's Arugula
Now let us imagine a different candidate, one who looks like Barack Obama, with the same mixed-race, international background, even the same middle name. But this time, he is Colonel Obama, a veteran of the war in Iraq, a kick-ass Marine with a "take no prisoners" attitude, who vows to follow Osama bin Laden to the outskirts of Hell. He comes from the culture of the military (the most color blind and merit-based in the country), and not the rarefied air of Hyde Park. He goes to a church with a mixed-race congregation and a rational preacher. He has never met Bill Ayers, and if he did he would flatten him. He thinks arugula is a town near Bogota and has Toby Keith on his favorites list. Would he strike no chords at all in Jacksonian country? Does anyone think he would lose 90 to 9 in Buchanan County? Or lose West Virginia by 41 points?....For those Jacksonians who would be fine with a black man in the White House (not as tiny a group as Newsweek thinks), Colonel Obama is the one we are waiting for. When we will get him is anyone's guess."

The move was seen as shrewd but potentially controversial. Solis Doyle was let go by Clinton because of what was widely regarded as poor campaign and financial management. But she still is a prominent Hispanic figure with ties to the former first lady -- attributes that could endear Obama to a sought-after political constituency. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/16/obama-hires-solis-doyle-a_n_107395.html

Come on Everyone,
Pati Solis Doyle is still a very loyal Democrat who has been touted as a brilliant strategist in the Party....I didn't believe Mark Penn for one moment....why did you?
Obama is shoring up the management in "Obamastyle" and the communication throughout key places in his campaign and that includes the VEEP ticket.
Of course a VEEP will come with close friends and handlers. But this position as Chief of Staff comes with voice of the Presidential Candidate and clear instructions on how the campaign is to be run, producing one voice and unity.
Chief of Staff for the VEEP ticket coordinates strategic point. Manages travel and campaign on the VEEPS end.
No close friend or handler can do that at a run unless he's gone through the training first.
I know from being on the Kerry campaign that its damn hard.
Obama is playing smart and Solis Doyle is a great choice.
Posted by: Chef Sheila | June 16, 2008 7:00 PM
"You don't hire Patti Solis Doyle for her operational expertise," said the bundler. "You don't do that. This is someone who failed dramatically at her job. You only bring her on to fuck someone else."
-from that Horowitz article
So since profane language is acceptable in mainstream journalism now, i'll ask:
Why the fuck did Hillary hire her then? Sounds like sour grapes to me.

“If Barack Obama’s the nominee, I’ll do everything I can to get him elected,” Solis Doyle told Politico.

Too bad you don't bother to read the material previously posted before you enter into the conversation
(Political Animal) PATTI SOLIS DOYLE, TAKE 2....It turns out that Barack Obama's hiring of Patti Solis Doyle is even more interesting than I thought at first. Perhaps because I deliberately pulled back from campaign coverage during the final couple of months after Texas and Ohio, I didn't realize that Solis Doyle had become so estranged from Hillary Clinton after she was fired as Hillary's campaign manager. Far from her hiring being a conciliatory gesture, the developing conventional wisdom is that Team Obama is sending the same kind of message to Team Clinton that the Tattaglia family sent to the Corleones in The Godfather:
"It's a slap in the face," Susie Tompkins Buell, a prominent Clinton backer, said in an interview. "Why would they put somebody that was so clearly ineffective in such a position? It's a message. We get it." She said it was a "calculated decision" by the Obama team to "send a message that she [Clinton] is not being considered for the ticket."

Just to bring it full circle, drowning-wise:
"I grow old … I grow old …
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
I do not think that they will sing to me.
I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.
We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown. "

there was a comment made earlier by Jamie that I liked:
"What bothers me most is that you are intelligent, have a strong point of view, can find interesting articles, and can be very very funny. Why the need to injure others that you don't know or be so violent in your verbal attacks. It hardly helps your point of view."
I agree, but I would like to add that there are plenty of backhanded insults doled out by others that go ignored. I find the backhanded insult just as bad as the in your face insults.

‘Whitey’ Source Revealed?
"They explain how Michelle Obama’s value system is deeply rooted in the black separatist teachings of Stokely Carmichael.
In his 1966 article entitled What We Want, in the New York Review of Books, Stokely Carmichael wrote, “about plots to ‘get Whitey‘” saying that “Black people don’t want to ‘get whitey,’” and in a 1969 article entitled Toward Black Liberation, Carmichael talks about racial incidents as “Git Whitey” “sensationalism.”
They have revealed a likely source for Michelle Obama’s use of the term “Whitey,” i.e., Michelle’s mentor Carmichael."

DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell'st thou then;
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.

To all the morons who post here...take this:
"Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherised upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming question … 10
Oh, do not ask, “What is it?”
Let us go and make our visit.
In the room the women come and go
Talking of Michelangelo. "

maybe you ought to rethink who you're worried about.

Thank LL.....I appreciate that...very much.....apparently I pissed someone off...
If I did that , I can only hope they deserved it. Don't worry I can take it.....but wen it come from someone who will not show their real identity...I really can't fix anything.

Its laughable.
It really never does change.
And you all just sit back and watch.
Amazing.
If I stand up to them, it becomes my fault.
And you guys go for it, over and over and over.
You know what's going on here.
How can you watch and say nothing.
One of the nice guys.
Please tell me.
Posted by: a | June 16, 2008 10:03 PM
I know.
You're the one's standing on a crowded street, watching someone get beat on by 3 or 4 guys.
But you don't want to get involved.
It's not your business.
So turn your back and walk away.
Until the next guy gets beat on.

lard,
This "a" person was being rude. I just piped in on Burritos behalf.

A = TS Smelliot
Sorry, peddle your dramas elsewhere. Your messages are indecipherable.
Maybe that's cuz so much much of the "drama" here really isn't drama, but nonsense.
Honestly, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
And I've read

Good to see you.

Really no need to respond to cowards and bullies. All that gets you is more of the same. With all the changes and aliases, you are fighting with shadows to terrified to come out of the dark alleys where all the other rats reside.

Dog. Sorry. I just read back and realized you were quoting.
You should use "quotation marks" when you do that, though.
My bad.

Hey Dog...I'm not sure who "a" or "abc" are. I honestly don't care to probe what they think. I won't bore you again with my longstanding rant about regular posters who assume different names to make different points. I just honestly don't get it.
I mainly just wanted to apologize for misreading your earlier message. I didn't realize you were quoting them.
Since you represent under your own name, I owed you that much.

Dog...Thanks. I get it now, and appreciate what you're saying.
And just so you know, because you're such a reliable and valuable regular here, I would defend you just as much as I defend UnlikelyB from trolls who can't be more creative than using the first letter of the alphabet to identify themselves.
Or the first three letters.
I RRRRREAALLLY gotta go now. Gotta work on that new language I'm creating.
See you all tomorrow.

I sure hope Dean and N.Pelosi and the Obama team don't take a slap at Hillary in Denver? I don't know how reliable this N.Q. is though?I think there the ones pushing the phony M.O.tape.Thanks for your post

Gees it is particularly incoherent tonight. Yes, sad to see Tim go though his Hillary treatment wasn't his finest hour. He sure could run laps around people like Uberwit and Mathpews.
Let's see, what is news today? France, Germany and England back Bush on Iran as the Gucci government in Pakistan has so emboldened the Taliban with their pathetic deals, the militants free Afghanistan prinsons and take towns. Gee Obama, your strategy seems to be working just fine.
The move of the DNC still looks as charming roday as last week....LOL Obama hies ex Clinton manager..LOL
And that idiot Dodd who plotted with Edwards and Obama to screw Michigan is caught in the shady zone.
So as Iraq reaches lower fatalities and Iran is loathed to sanctions while Pakistan's "moderate" government inflames trouble in Afghanistan, Obama brilliance will find plenty of supporting evidence.
How Obaudacious! And look at Obama getting down with religion! he talking about Jesus at last. What a laugh. Gore ought to tell Obama to cool it cause he's raising the global temperature.
Chapelle was so right about Kelly. Where's the digital piss when you need it?

Birthdays.
Today, my mom would have been 99 and my younger grandfather 128. My older grandfather would be like 150 this year.
The first two I miss greatly.
The only recollection I have of my other grandfather was of the events surrounding his funeral. I was only a toddler when he passed.
Oh, my dad would have been 115 this year.
May they all rest in peace.

Hi Jason,
That was some run tonight on the posts, eh?
How are things in your part of the world? I posted an article from no quarter, but because it is primarly a Hillary site, everyone discounted it. They are saying Obama and his new dnc are not going to let Hillary have a roll call vote in Denver? I was going to write in Hillary. But more and more I am thinking McCain sure looks a whole lot more acceptable than Obama and his dirty politics.. What is your opinion..
Prof Marcia, you on yet?

I am 100% going to sit this out Julie. I am sick and tired of these games and these insults.... I hate to say it, but this primary has enlightened me about the role politics is playing in my life now. I am not a follower anymore. I make my own freakin´ judgement...
And my gut is telling me to sit this one out...and so I intend to...
I cannot vote for McCain, but will also never vote for BO.
As I said earlier, we know how he played the race card and how he manged to use the media for his own galore.....
I will sit it out...that is a given.
Nevertheless it is till nice to read, allthough the harshness on this blog is getting to a point where I just have to blink and sigh.....
Holland is at the moment extremely orange due to the two wins in euro 2008. Tonight is the 3rd match against Romania.....Holland is allready into the quarters.

What are folks going to do? Have they voiced an opinion yet? I have never voted republican before.
Family have been democrats since 1840.
Soccer?
Boy have we had the rain here. Western Kansas has 5 county drought, and Iowa particularly and few other states are flooding. Corn crop is going to be slimmer this year, for food and fuel.

I was saddened by Mr. Russert's passing, as I had become familiar with him as I was a regular MTP viewer.
I also was aware of his lighter side as he would be a frequent guest of Don Imus. And too, for me it was a stunning death as Mr. Russert and I were the same age.
Now we move on.
There won't be a move to find a Russert-like replacement because there are none.
Meet the Press has had many moderators and was headed for cancellation when Tim Russert was hired and stamped the program with his brand.
David Brinkley was killing MTP and Tim stepped in and righted the ship.
We can speculate on a replacement but the truth is that the board will decide who they can hire that won't be steamrolled by Stephanopulous.
I'll say this, though...CBS SMN has run its course.
CBS should dump SMN and look for a "new George Herman".
Herman, who died in 2005, was a great Sunday moderator, with FTN.
Charles Osgood is in his mid-seventies and he shouldn't be replaced...the whole concept should be scrapped and CBS should return to a MTP-type program.

Hello Jason..I have become disheartened with lack of quality and the lack of respectful discussion on this blog.
I rarely participate anymore and in short order probably won't participate at all.
The reason I checked out this blog was because I enjoy Craig Crawford and find him interesting, bringing a perspective to political analysis that we don't see very often.
I feel badlythat his blog has become such an outlet for angry, messed up people.

Dexter,
Always thought Stepanopoulas(sp) group was pretty good.
Thought Russert was also good until this years debates that he moderated. Like asking Obama simple or loaded questions that were a no brainer,
Then hitting Hillary like a brick. I lost my respect for him at that point. Perhaps that is GE stance now, but their stock fell its its lowest today. SO it may not be working as well as they want it to.

Hi OD,
Long time since I saw your posts. Are you fence sitting this year or have you decided to vote for BO?
Julie
Posted by: Julie Young 73 | June 17, 2008 2:25 AM
OD and everyone,
The harshness we are experiencing here, is the way society is turning these days.
Although I am only 30 yeras old, people have often told me that I am an old soul reincarnated into a young body. LOL..... Seen as I am cathloic I do not believe in reincarnation, but.....I do feel that sometimes I am out of touch with the world today.
I seldom drink alcohol, I have never used drugs etc etc...due to the way my parents raised me. Strict!
Being an Afrcan American, drugs were never ever tolerated and alcohol was only consumed on december 31st...
But,
I am happy the way I was raised...
We (my brother, sister and I) all turned out very good and respectable human beings.
But,
If I look around and I do not have to go far...Just staying here on the blog...I sense the urgency of people wanting to be accepted.
The mere sole of some commenting on here is to be accepted. And they force their opinions on others as their justification of being someone, belonging somewhere. It is sad, because they cannot sense when it is time to shut up or give the stage to someone else.
The harshnees comes into play, because they feel that they own the spotlight.... It is my opinion or none!
As I am reading here for weeks and months these people sometimes irritate me, but I try to not let it get to me. I read and the immediately take it out of my system.....
Continue to come, read and make up your own opinion. The god thing is, that by reading these comments you get the sense of where you are as a person, in the USA and where ever you reside.
The sad thing is, that we as a society lay blame on our politicians for giving us the wrong example, we accuse of being everything that is bad.....but as a people we thrive on that and try to keep our hands clean, when all we do (most of us) is getting into the nitty gritty and doing our share of spreading hate and anger.....
Thats why this primary was so important...The battle between these two people wasgood, because it showed us where we are as a nation...and IMO we are nowhere when it comes to being tolerant, forgiving and human....And it is not a black and white thing..it is a SOUL thing!
sad!

Julie..I will work on our local congressional race.
I have little regard for Barack Obama..less regard each day.
I thinki Obama will be a very weak candidate. He and McCain are both trainwrecks waiting to happen. I'll just observe the mess.

It's amazing how you idiots attempt to degrade a true American icon. Like him or not, you idiot bloggers could never carry Tim Russert's water. When all of the silly MSNBC wannabees talk about Tim's fairness and willingness to listen, tell them to "talk to a mirror"
