Obama's Vetting Blunder

| | Comments (263)

Barack Obama's first major decision as presumed Democratic nominee turned out to be a disaster mostly because the candidate himself so badly mishandled ethical questions about the man who was directing his vice presidential search team.

Jim Johnson resigned from the team today in the wake of concerns about the longtime Democratic insider's ties to a troubled mortgage firm. But it was Obama's preposterous response to the scandal on Tuesday that made it necessary to dump Johnson and clear the decks.

"I am not vetting my VP search committee for their mortgages," Obama told reporters in St. Louis. "This is a game that can be played. Everybody who is tangentially related to our campaign I think is going to have a whole host of relationships. I would have to hire the vetter to vet the vetters."

Obama's cavalier response utterly contradicted his campaign's supposed crusade for reform. Not only did those words come across as tone deaf to the very ethical issues that he has raised in this election, but his remarks sounded like the ethical relativism we so often hear from the Washington business-as-usual crowd that Obama claims to be running against.

  3. Well, Jim Johnson won't emerge from the vetting pack as the vice president nominee, that's for sure. While not as serious as the McGovern and Eagleton affair (I support Thomas Eagleton 1,000 percent only to be asked to resign the next day), Obama had better get his act together and be more presidential or the Democrats will have shot themselves in the foot and lost another election -- again.

  4. Craig, he should just pick Hillary and be done with it. He's already proven he's not about the "new politics"... He's wanting to use the same old consultants and Democratic insiders regardless of their ethics or questionable ties.

  6. Craig writes: his remarks sounded like the ethical relativism we so often hear from the Washington business-as-usual crowd that Obama claims to be running against.

That's the whole problem -- BHO IS business-as-usual disguised as a uniter and reformer. His favorite tactic when confronted either about Rev Wright, the flag pin, or the MO tape is to talk esoterically about the rights and wrongs of the process of the media and the way questions are asked -- like with his having to vet the vetters comment -- rather than address the real issue at hand.

  9. Jim Johnson ran Fannie Mae, a Government Sponsored Enterprise. They set the conforming loan guidelines that were the safest loans originated during the sub prime crisis. How is that an issue when he isn't advising on mortgage policy and if he did, it would be more sound advice than from other sources?

  14. So...I'm at the gym the other day making the circuit of the weight-resistance machines, and there's this pumped-up Type A personality control-freak dad there showing his two young kids how to work out with weights. (which I thought was kind of weird to begin with, because they were no more than 10 years old). And he was leading them through the exercises like a drill sergeant.

Anyway...the three of them and me are the only people in the rather sizable room. The machines have numbers on them -- because theoretically you're supposed to go through them sequentially, but it really makes no difference and everyone ignores that procedure anyway and skips around. Different gyms have the exact same machines set up in different order. So skipping around is what I was doing...when I overhear the Pumped Up Dad telling his kids: "You're supposed to go in order. People who don't go in order are really just selfish and rude. They're violating the rules." And he just kept up at it for 5 or 10 minutes, addressing the children but clearly intending me to hear what he was saying. I just wanted to tell this jerk off, but I bit my tongue and completely ignored him because I didn't want to dis the guy right in front of his young kids.

My question: Does anyone have any rules they follow about confronting asshole parents in front of their kids? I felt so sorry for those kids as it was having such a humorless drill sergeant for a father. But I figured if I called the guy out on it, it would just embarrass and scar the kids further.

    Thoughts anyone? Similar stories?

  19. Little kids should not be doing training with any heavy weights. Low wieght reps maybe. But their bones have not knit (still growing) and putting too much strain on then is bad news. Talk to the trainer and see if (s)he could casually offer advice on using the machines to the family.

  20. I guess that's as bright a line as any to draw, Doots. In a way, being such an obvious jerk of a dad over the course of a kid's childhood is like slow-motion emotional abuse, but probably not worth raising a public ruckus about. Thanks.

Sometimes I wish people had to get a license to be a parent, just like a driver's license. Hell...you can do a lot more significant damage to a kid than you can to or with a car.

On the other hand -- maybe this guy is really Father Of The Year and I'm being way too judgemental based on a small sliver of information.

  21. Renee -- thanks! I'm going to go tell Chopper what you said...so he'll be good the rest of the day. LOL.

Nick...there are no posted rules at my YMCA. It's just sort of implied because the numbers are pasted on the machines.

BowmanC...I instinctively thought it was weird to see those kids working out, too. But I see kids on treadmills and elliptical machines at the Y, too, so I figure I'm just behind the times. Whatever happened to climbing trees, throwing rocks, riding bikes with banana seats and building forts? That's how we exercised when I was a kid.

If you started looking at everyone in Congress who got themselves a deal on their mortgages, you would have less than 40 who didn't get some benefit from a friend in the industry.

If I did your mortgage, I wouldn't gouge you. If I turn out to be a jackass, how is that your problem when you are purchasing service from me?

  32. UPDATE: McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds emails:

Jim Johnson's resignation raises serious questions about Barack Obama's judgment. Selecting the vice presidential nominee is the most important decision a presidential candidate can make and one even Barack Obama has said will 'signal how I want to operate my presidency.' By entrusting this process to a man who has now been forced to step down because of questionable loans, the American people have reason to question the judgment of a candidate who has shown he will only make the right call when under pressure from the news media. America can't afford a president who flip-flops on key questions in the course of 24 hours. That's not change we can believe in.

Jim did not want to distract in any way from the very important task of gathering information about my vice presidential nominee, so he has made a decision to step aside that I accept. We have a very good selection process underway, and I am confident that it will produce a number of highly qualified candidates for me to choose from in the weeks ahead. I remain grateful to Jim for his service and his efforts in this process."

  51. My Dad is a complicated, yet simple man. He was the one parent that none of the kids in the neighborhood liked. He would often yell out the front door at the neighborhood kids, "Don't stand on the boulevard! You're killing my grass! Stand on the driveway. One kid named Marty talked smack to my Dad one night. My Dad said, "Don't make me come out there!" Marty said, "C'mon out here , old man!" My Dad ran outside and chased Marty all the way down the street. I remember when my sister got her learner's permit for driving. She took my Mom and I for a drive. When we got back , she tried to park the car in our carport. She took out 3 of 4 wooden posts that were holding up our carport. My Dad wasn't home at the time. All the neighborhood kids gathered in our neighbor's backyard and waited for my Dad to get home. They wanted to see his reaction. He got home and I pointed to the carport. The kids all thought he would blow his top. His reaction was, "WHAT THE HELL?!" Surprisingly calm for him. Another time my Dad almost got into a fight with 2 high school guys after a football game because these guys were revving the engine on their car. My Dad yelled at them for doing that and they both challenged him to a fight. Meanwhile , my best friend and I sat in the backseat of our car. My Dad said, "I would fight you both if I didn't have my kid in the car!" There are many stories about him. The biggest thing is that no matter what he says or does , he is never in the wrong. He can twist things around to make his anger or behavior justified. Make you think that you caused his behavior. He will apologize sometimes. But , I always look at it like this: "If you wouldn't have said what you said or done what you have done , you wouldn't have to apologize!"

If there are more divisions from Hillary supporters because she wasn't offered, isn't it better to have that done right away so then the Dems can work to try and bring the disenchanted on board to support Obama and the ticket?

I'm still in the LOYAL category from that CNN article meaning "writing in Hillary's name", but I am still fluid. Usually when a really rude person takes me on (who happens to support Obama) I tend to shift more towards Hillary. .

  58. Like I said JeeJee...the answer was obvious for me, but I don't expect others to have the same reaction.

On the "experienced and qualified" front, here's what I think: Executive competence is really only one aspect of the job of being president of the U.S. The ability to lead people is probably equally if not more important.

Jimmy Carter, for example, was highly experienced and qualified -- but was seen as a mediocre leader. Hence, he's on very few historians' lists of "great presidents."

JFK probably had more in the way of leadership ability going than he had in terms of executive competence, at least going into the job, (see Bay of Pigs Invasion), but he is commonly placed on lists of great presidents.

I think Hillary had both capacities equally -- incredibly intelligent and competent, and a great ability to lead.

I think Obama obviously has great leadership ability -- and the executive competence is a work in progress.

I think McCain has evidenced very limited leadership ability -- just smirks and sarcasm, mostly. He doesn't give me the sense that he could rally anyone or inspire the nation to great heights. And I think his "executive competence" score only looks good when placed next to Obama's lack of experience. Otherwise, I think McCain would be fairly described as a standard-issue U.S. Senator on that front.

"Micro-story" LL?? C'mon, choosing a running mate, and how one goes about doing it, is absolutely the ONLY opportunity that voters get in a presidential race to evaluate a general election candidate's presidential-level decision making. Whom they choose to fill key positions in an adminsitration is more important than all the BS that campaigns are mostly about. Personally, I wish voters demanded pre-election Cabinet choices as well. But unfortunately, the VP process is all we get for learning how someone would delegate authority and to whom they will delegate it -- which is maybe 90 percent of what a president does to make a difference.

  69. Craig,

Passionate opinion from our favorite tight rope walker? : )

I happen to agree that a statement from the prospective Chief Executive as to who is under consideration for running mate and ALL of the cabinet positions would be really helpful to the voter.

The instant Bush said Cheney, the warning bells shoudl have gone off. I am waiting for the Obama VP announcement to decide if it will be a third party vote or a Democratic vote. It is that important.

  70. I will tell a story about my former boss at The Evergreen State College. She was a trip! Funny, strong, demanding, but cool too. She was once a longshoreman, used to drink a lot, smoke a lot and was really "one of the guys" (before I knew her that is). Anyway I heard these stories and that she cleaned up her act, found a man she loved and no longer drank or smoked. She got pregnant at age 35 and had a daughter she always wanted "Sena Mariah"... She was on leave for like 4 months and I filled in as Library Group secretary. Anyway, she came back and everything was fine... But she had this persistent cough...

I would bring some vitamin c candies from the bookstore, and finally she sees a doctor who gives her medicine for bronchitis. So finally they do x-rays and discover she has LUNG cancer. Not only Lung cancer, but stage 4 lung cancer. So immediately the reference librarians started doing research and everyone was sure she'd do well coz she was always strong and a fighter and the fact she was young played in her favor. What they found however, was that lung cancer was more virulent in younger people than the elderly. She began chemo and radiation therapy. The cancer was shrinking slowly... But 4 months later she got up to go to the bathroom and she collapsed. They took her up to Seattle to Virginia Mason and it was discovered the cancer had went through her blood and her brain was absolutely covered with tumors.

I still remember going up to see her two days before she died. She was so small, and her lips were totally cracked, she couldn't speak and her sister was rubbing her hands constantly and crying. I went in and said "hello Cheryl" and she turned and looked at me and I just started crying. I couldn't control it. I will never forget her head turned and she kept looking at me but it was as if I was a stranger. Of course she was also off the feeding and hydration tubes so I knew it wouldn't be long. I walked all around Seattle that day, tears in my eyes and I didn't care who saw it.

At the funeral or memorial service, her little baby was there.. she could walk, must have been a little more than a year old... and she saw people crying and she held up tissues of course not even knowing what was going on. There we celebrated Cheryl's life... dead at 36..

One thing the Reference Librarians found was that when someone quits smoking, after 5 years the risk of lung cancer REALLY drops. Cheryl had quit 3.5 years earlier and as I recall, the consensus was that her pregnancy had caused her hormones to activate the dormant cells that led to lung cancer.

Corey, one thing I learned. Even when you think you aren't particularly close to a co-worker or boss, when this happens, the grief is enormous !

But on the issue of "change" and choosing the consummate insider, complete with shady mortgage deals, runs counter to Obama's supposed message. And in that, it shows either hypocrisy and an incredible lack of awareness of the up and down sides of people he brings on board. It's a issue of judgement.

Politico pointed out that he ran the Mondale campaign and all vp selections since with the exception of the Clinton years.

Now that really doesn't create a lot of confidence in his abilities.

Plus the NYT just profiled him and had a bunch on his sitting on compensation committees for a bunch of large corporations which is a hot button item for Obama.

Add to that he is the Vice Chairman of the Perseus Fund which is associated with Soros and also is the parent company of the publisher for the Scott McClellan book and the guy simply had too much baggage to be kept on.

Now about Webb...many are under the false impression Webb was apolitical when he joined Reagan's team and eventually took over as Sec'y of The Navy.
Reagan never would have made it without "Reagan Democrats".
Webb was a Reagan Democrat, not a repug who eventually switched for the first time to the Democrats.

In this town there two great PI attorneys. You go to one of these lawyers if you are in need of that specialty and money is not an issue. Both of these guys had extreme high profile cases in the past four years. That's just what you do.

In Obama's case, he needed to get one of the best people to accomplish the task to vet VP choices and he selected one of a few that has previous experience with two past VP selections in the near past. He did what people do with his special needs.

What would give him pause to stop and vet this vetter? Johnson had done this work the last cycle with plenty of public scrutiny. The moment he learned of any problem, the guy is gone.

I agree with LL, this should be a non-story. It will be a long time until November with these kinds of stories and pundits willing to make mountains out of mole hills.

  133. "Are we supposed to accept the idea that running a campaign is like running the country. Campaigns are about selling the voters the goods." cs.

Scott McClellan and others have talked recently about the "permanent campaign." The term refers to the theory that a president or any other politician can't stop campaigning once they're in office; thus, "running the country" isn't on their radar screen at all. We've all seen it in the workplace, too. So and so gets a job from some other employment and for the first six months or year or more all the new person can talk about is what they did to get the job and the job never gets done. At some point, Obama and McCain, both, have got to show us that they can run the country and not be in campaign mode all the time. Picking a vp is a primary step toward showing us that the candidate can run the country, even if it means the vp becomes president through death or impeachment or otherwise leaves office. Yes, this was an important step and not a micro issue. As I said before above, I hope Obama can recover from this mistake and not cost the Dem's to lose the election through a series of critical mistakes between now and November. How many days is it until then?

Oh yes, it is so hilarious that the world's most powerful people meet in secret, and even funnier that American citizens would question the lack of transparency from our supposedly elected leaders in attendance there. We should just trust them, they are doing SUCH a good job.

Then, if Orkin gets accused later on of ripping off customers, does that make you stupid or irresponsible for hiring them? I don't think so.

Patsi...did you happen to see Rick Perry's presser today on the burned-down Texas governor's mansion? I think one of the first times I was disillusioned with the world was when I was about 13, and spending a couple of weeks in Topeka, Kansas with my sister and her husband. There was a huge story in the newspaper about a mansion that had been vandalized. The owners were gone for the summer, and the house was closed up. Somebody jimmied a window and instead of stealing anything, they ran a garden hose into this room and turned on a sprinkler. It ran for over a week before somebody who checked up on the house came by and found it.

It turned out that this room was a music room, with rare violins, pianos, amazing antique furniture and fine art on the walls. The paper had before and after photos. I believe it turned out to be some neighbor boys, wealthy teens, who thought it would be funny as hell.

I kept that paper for a long time because I just couldn't understand the thrill. I would have understood a robbery. But to destroy those items like that seemed pathological.

  200. who did kerry pick again?

    Posted by: sturgeone | June 11, 2008 9:25 PM

  201. Kerry's campaign began the process of searching for a vice-presidential nominee, sometimes called the "Veepstakes", shortly after Kerry's Super Tuesday victories. Kerry named Jim Johnson, former advisor to Vice President Walter F. "Fritz" Mondale, as the head of a vice-presidential search process.

One of the major criteria considered to be a factor in selecting a vice-presidential candidate was the ability to deliver a traditionally Republican or a swing state in the November election. Every successful Democratic presidential campaign since 1960 has included a politician from a swing state (usually in the South) who helped deliver one or more states for the Democrats.

By the first week of July 2004, pundits and those close to the Kerry campaign indicated that the vice-presidential selection had narrowed to three potential choices: U.S. Sen. John R. Edwards (N.C.), U.S. Rep. Richard A. "Dick" Gephardt (Mo.), and Iowa Gov. Thomas J. Vilsack, all of whom were reportedly instructed to clear their calendars for a potential announcement during the second week of July. Edwards, from North Carolina, is a Southerner; the other two, from Missouri and Iowa respectively, are Midwesterners (the Midwest is viewed as a key region containing numerous swing states). As of late June, the charismatic Edwards was the first choice of Democratic voters, according to several polls; some pundits attributed this to high name recognition, due to his runner-up status in the primaries.

The early polls show Obama ahead, but the early polls, before, showed Hillary ahead. Here's hoping he holds the lead over McBush.

appreciate the sentiment, patd, but no one ever owes me an apology for such a thing. LL offered a strong case for his point of view, and that's what we're all about here. We had a fun debate without rancor there. All good.

  248. It's funny,

You can only argue against people with whom you fundamentally agree, and even they don't like you.

Did I say funny? I meant sad.

    Posted by: champ | June 12, 2008 12:23 AM

  249. Yeah he is... Down to 2, buddy!

"And friends, somewhere in Washington enshrined in some little folder, is a
study in black and white of my fingerprints.

And the only reason I'm singing you this song now is cause you may know somebody in a similar situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a situation like that there's only one thing you can do
and that's walk into the shrink wherever you are , just walk in say

    "Ron Paul".

    And walk out.

You know, if one person, just one person does it they may think he's really sick and they won't take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they're both faggots and they won't take either of them.

And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
singin a bar of Ron Paul and walking out. They may think it's an
    organization.

And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said
fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Ron Paul and
walking out. And friends, they may thinks it's a movement."

  250. Good Morning gang..

    Well... just read the news.
    Nice piece Craig.
The problem here is as follwos: Als long as it is scripted for BO, it is good. he will follow the lead.
The moment he has to fall on his own tact, he crashes.
Stay tuned, we are in for quite a ride......

Did I mention yesterday, the day before, last week, last month, five months ago.....that the change BO was proclaiming was all talk...
All hat, no cattle peepz, and we only at the beginning.

    God help US!

    Don´t blame me....I voted Hillary!

  251. Dog - just curious. Do you mean to say that GWB was elected by "older" folk and "they" should do better next time? Maybe "they" had help, but it's "their" fault?

Also, out of curiosity, where is the dividing line between
"older" and "younger", and does "middle-aged " come
    into your analysis?

Again, I ask out of curiosity. I really want to know if that is what you meant to say. Is that what you believe? Is that how you see it?

Posted by: bethyboo Author Profile Page | June 12, 2008 1:32 AM

  252. Craig - I agree with you that it should be a cause for more doubts, but think many people will let it slide, as we've already seen.

This is a bad sign but he could realize it and be more vigilant. Also, his handlers may have learned a lesson about him, and will move swifly to rectify.

I don't think he has listened to his own speeches, and doesn't realize what he meant when he made those promises. He running with in some pretty rough crowds, and that's not just oxygen you breathe at that altitude.

  253. Champ - my ink hasn't arrived - it's been a long 24 hour delivery time. Tomorrow.

Good news is that I got my vodka.

Yes, I know you don't care if I respond to your comment, but I care. Lotta introspection going on between my ears.

Now, as the bishops said to the actress, three of my own comments in a row means I'm talkin' to muself.
    Night.

  254. I've been approaching the veep from the reverse angle---who would refuse the invitation?
Since Cheney re-wrote the etiquette for that office, who knows?
Which US Senators would be able to serve the nation better from the Russell than from US Naval Observatory, if that's still the veep residence...it seems there is a different place where the veep lives now...?
It would be a waste if we lost Dodd or Biden to a career of possible thumb-twiddling.
Biden is kind of a political-mad-scientist, and Dodd may be the smartest US Senator in the history of the Republic. Any one else ever been that smart?

  255. sturgee...and I spent many miles riding shotgun in a '55 Chevy...I was 14, buddy was 16, and he worked his ass off mowing ditches in the summer, plus he was a radio & TV boy-genius and he made a lotta cash fixing TYs when he was still just 15 or 16...we rammed that damdam '55 all over hell's half acre and then came nightfall, and well...I was 14 and a drag on his social life because all the chicks he knew were his age and wouldn't be caught dead with a little 14 year old boy, so when the sun set, the chicks got shotgun, and I got my bike and rode to the drugstore and drank nickel cherry Cokes and I'd see buddy roaring past with 16 year old girls in the front seat, and Gene Pitney sang "Town Without Pity" through the speakers.

    Posted by: bethyboo | June 12, 2008 1:41 AM

Do not agree with you bethy.
He has listened to his speeches and he realized what he was saying.
The crux is that they were not HIS speeches. When something are not your beliefs, and not your own theory you can preach it, but will not bring it into practice.
BO is a puppet who is dancing to other´s tunes.
I dare say that he will be a younger GWB... he will continue to make flaws and fully contrast what he has promised to voters during primary season. It will fade though, during this lection cycle...only to nail it if (and God forbid) wins the GE
BO is a typical politician who used his race and his youthful charm to sway the voters. Now....where have we seen this before.?????

Yesterday someone asked me, why I was so upset when HRC was losing.... He said: "The pople will get exactly what they deserve!"
I was mad at that statement when he made it, but frankly....he is right!
Maybe we as a people deserve JmC or BO and continue to live hardship throughout.....

    Don´t blame me.....
