Obama Rebrands Presidential Seal

| | Comments (178)

sealofobama.jpgWhy would a presidential candidate want possums on his podium? But there you see it on Barack Obama's new sealofobama2.jpgstage logo, the word "possumus" -- part of a Latin phrase on Obama's redesigned presidential seal.

"Vero possumus," roughly translated, means "Yes, We Can," the Obama camp explains. The phrase replaces the official presidential seal's "E Pluribus Unum" (Out of many, One).

And undaunted by any thoughts of sanctity for the original seal's familiar look, the Obama team slapped their  "O" logo right on the eagle's belly where the shield used to be.

Now, that is change.

    The float vote
If you want to know who'll pick the next president, just use the formula 4M + 2M.

"...Pocketbook issues are as important as character concerns for these voters, and they will be watching closely over the next four months to see who can deliver. Period. History suggests that in times of anxiety and cynicism, Americans turn to a leader they trust to get things done.

For floating voters, change is not enough. It's not simply a fresh face they want. It's a leader who can give them a fresh start."

  6. This is another of those "too cute by half" things the Obama campaign does that make you shake your head in disbelief. It usually happens in campaigns with either too many young people making decisions who have no historical memory or too many cynics who think they can get away with anything. Sen. Obama seems to be cursed with both.

It will go away now that they have been the butt of a few jokes.

At a discussion with a dozen Democratic governors in Chicago on Friday morning, each of the governors was identified with a small name plate but Senator Barack Obama sat behind a low rostrum to which was attached an official-looking seal no one had seen before.

The closest common Latin phrase I found was

Possunt quia posse videntur - They can because they think they can

Vero is "In truth, in deed, or sure" So the word Yes could be a loose translation.

In researching the question of the great seal, I found a statement by someone in the Obama campaign (not one of the big shots) that the campaign was going to try out a lot of new things and the public might not ever see this seal again.

  45. McCain should consider his own version of the Presidential Seal

he could change the motto to

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker Author Profile Page | June 22, 2008 10:47 AM

  46. chloe: It might be too much to say there was a DNC conspiracy. However, it appears to me that there was a concerted effort to bring Sen Obama forward, beginning with the 2004 convention speech, and then to convince him to run when he had not planned to do so as soon as this year.
Had Kerry won in 2004, the whole timetable would have shifted and none of us knows what might have happened.
It does seem clear to me that more than a few Party insiders resented / resent President Clinton. I don't think it's because of the impeachment so much as a desire to get rid of the DLC types, despite the fact that without conservative Democrats in some parts of the country the Dems could not hold their majority.

I have very little exposure to those type of people (racists), and that may be why I can easily become hopeful. I look at the two choices for POTUS, and pick the one that most closely supports my beliefs. Plus, I truly believe that Hillary will get a position out of this(if Obama wins), and she will have the opportunity to do something great.

At this point, hope is what I have, no one knows the future. We know the past and the present....and making the wrong choice for POTUS, as Americans have done the last two GEs , has brought us to this point.

I could never give my vote, as a stamp of approval, or as an "okay , you guys continue on , your doing a great job"..... to the republican party. They do not deserve the office or the power.

This is the sort of charge that disturbs me and you could well be right that I just haven't seen it. The only constant comments of this type that I have seen is the innundation from Gordo and we all know that he is simply an anti-Obama troll posting stuff from right wing blogs and the black helicopter crowd.

Of the regular posters, among remarks I've seen is "unprepared' "inexperienced", and "Chicago style politician" ... none of which are particularly vicious. There have been comments about his followers as being somewhat robotic in their adulation, but that is a commentary about them not him. The absolute worst that I have seen is "empty suit" implying all rhetoric without knowledge.

If you can point out anything more accusatory from anyone else other than Gordo, I would be happy to take note of it. Compared to the vile names and accusations directed at Sen. Clinton that is minimal.

I will say now that he has secured the nomination, I'm finding Sen. Obama more interesting. Maybe now that he is out from under the demands of the primary campaign, he has more time to study the issues and consult others who previously supported Sen. Clinton. He is actually starting to have more content in his speeches and interviews. If that continues, it indicates and ability to learn from others and correct errors.

Chloe, my view is that any aspiring Democratic nominee OUGHT TO HIJACK the DNC any way possible. The DNC has a history of undermining its own leaders going back to when it ran against its own president in the 1980 primaries. Among Clinton's many mistakes in this campaign was losing control of DNC after McAuliffe was replaced by Dean. So, I view taking control of DNC as one of the smartest moves Obama made.

The only one I'm aware of is that I am hardest on winners and sympathetic to losers. Going back to when I was perceived as one of the most anti-Clinton journalists around in the 1992 and 1996 campaigns. Earlier this year I was badgering Obama and Edwards to attack Clinton's inevitability stance. My bias is to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted. In other words, when I am slamming your candidate, take heart, because it probably means that you're going to win. And vice versa.

  92. Hi Craig,

This move by Obama is par for his arrogance. This is change I can believe in? LOL

Rather than to go into the steady stream of hypocrisy coming from Obama like his new public finance stance, let's just turn to the Middle East. In Pakistan, Islamic militants are starting to attack India in Kashmir again. Musharraf stopped that. The Taliban has said to be infiltrating the Pakistani army as deals have freed many terrorists that flock to the border to kill NATO forces in Afghanistan. A Q Khan has been suspected of giving our enemies advanced nuclear weapon designs. Bhutto promised the US could interview Khan. Now the moderate government tells the Swiss to screw off. Obama now has no standing to talk about Afghanistan and Pakistan having failed to predict accurately the consequence of his advocacy or the origin of the problems. His Pakistani view has made us less safe from OBL who Richardson should see is safer now than while Musharraf was master.

Meanwhile Hillary Clinton pointed out the danger of Syrian and Iranian efforts in WMD. She praised the Israeli strike on Syira while Obama said nothing. Now this:

    http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,3429136,00.html?maca=en-rss-en-all-1573-rdf

As violence falls in Iraq and the consequence of moderates proving to be worse than Musharraf in Palistan, Obama will have a tough time debating. Then there is his faltering position on Afghanistan and Iran as well as his dubious claims towards Israeli support and rebuilding a better military. Of course he intends to slash defense spending.

Last, there are amost 70 billion barrels of fossil fuel in and around America. In addition, there is more than that in Canada. The idea the the Democrats have prevented the extraction of a quarter of that energy in areas that are not sensitive environmental sites is rejected by recent polling. We have more than enough proven reserves to bridge the gap between oil and alternatives. No, we can drill our way out of energy shortfalls forever, but we are talking about the gap. Cellulosic fuel will come on line as clean coal becomes affordable as well as carbon sequestering. In time, Photo cells will be both affordable and more efficient. The approach by the Democrats is not the soundest strategy including suing OPEC and cutting back of use of fossil fuel. The idea is less demand lowers prices while Democrats claim more supply will not do the same. LOL Obama is showing how his ideology IS a problem for bipartisan compromise. He wants it his way. Clinton and other moderates have expressed a much more centered approach as McCain moves to center too. His rejection of Anwar is simply because there is not enough oil there. There is plenty in shale oil and energy off our coast. There are designs for small, safe reactors using former weapon material. There is plenty we can do and the Democrats are showing themselves to be limited to ideology. Had Hilary prevailed, this would not be the case.

Instead we now have Obama's new seal of approval and continued ideological positions falling to facts and polls.

    Have fun with that Obamniacs.

    Split the ticket

    Save the Democrats from themselves.

And Craig, still no comment on that Freedom of Press Bill? Freedom for who?

The campaign finance legislation specifically exempts
aircraft owned by a candidate or his/her family or by a
    privately held company they control.

FEC adopted rules to close this loophole but the agency does not have the requisite # of commissioners to complete any rule making functions.

McCain therefore is able to use his wife's corporate plaine like a charter jet while paying 1st class rates.

Aspiring nominee? Nominee aspirant? Presumptive nominee? Nominee? Or simply presumptuous, my favorite appellation in Mr Obama's case.

Your citation of Mr Clinton's failure in maintaining control of the DNC after the Dean fiasco is relevant--but less so than it might otherwise have been because of the severity of Mr Clinton's illness and his long, and IMO still incomplete, recovery.

But, when should a person accomplish the hijack? Which of the several possible stages I listed above is the appropriate one?

Seems to me it's either when the individual becomes the nominee, or, at least, the presumptive nominee if that presumption is achieved without the type of chicanery that occurred this go around.

I'm against the kind of dynasty building that a hijacked domination seeks to create. Look what has happened in the last few weeks. Back room dealings in apparent conflict with published rules of the DNC, attempts to relocate the primary element of the DNC to Chicago before there is even a bona fide nominee.

My bottom line: Personal ownership of the DNC sucks and is reason in itself to reconstitute the party in a way that mirrors the aspirations of Democratic voters.

    Dump the DNC.

I am feeling stronger now about Obama taking Hillary on his ticket. I think if he picks Sam Nunn and McCain picks Gov. Palin or Carly Fiona - the Dems are in trouble. (Plus, McCain has the ability to announce his VP second since the GOP convention comes later).

HRC is the only potential female VP candidate (that I have heard mentioned) that has legitimate National Security credentials.

Picking HRC would demonstrate a lot of things about Obama:

    1. He is bucking the conventional wisdom that says he can't do it.

    2. He is listening to the 17 million voters instead of the pundits and the political insiders.

    3. He is not simply selecting a "yes man" or a figurehead.

    4. He is acting consistent with the notion in Team of Rivals that this Country's problems (thanks to Bush-Cheney) are going to require our strongest leaders.

    5. He can put the primary behind him and focus on the future.

And if the GOP says - hey look at this another example that this guys is just a regular old pol and this is politics as usual instead of a real change - we can say - Let me introduce the world to the first black US President and the first female US Vice President. After 8 years of Bush and the failed policies of the Republican Party - who do you think that super majority of voters who are looking for change are going to vote for?

  108. You know, it seems to me that both Obama supporters and Clinton supporters feel particularly aggrieved about how the other side has treated them on this blog. Clinton supporters feel extremely disrespected as do the Obama supporters. This suggests to me that we carry a certain "perception gap" about what is said by people on our own side when these squabbles occur. By this I mean that if I, as a Clinton supporter, agreed with something another Clinton supporter said, I would (perhaps subconsciously) overlook a comment that I would find a real slam from an Obama supporter and again, vice-versa. Our infinity with our own "side" makes us more tolerant of our own and less so of the other "side".

Just my thought and you can toss them in the trash bin if you like.

I think the Obama and Clinton supporters should just stop it with the "boo hoo hoo, I was treated badly here" diatribes. We got to march ever upward and forward toward November 2008. At some point that means finding that which unites us and stop focussing on that which divides us.

I am a work in progress here, but I can say one thing... I don't like to see the constant sniping among us. As most of you know, there are only a couple people in here I do not like at all, but I try to hold my tongue (not always successfully -- I carry self-pride too and defend it when I feel it's necessary). Can we try to debate on the issues, passionately to be sure, but without tossing angry zingers across to each other? I think we'd all feel better about our participation if we could do this...

Thanks.. and I am almost 1/2 asleep here so I got to go to bed...

With the election looming, I would think when dealing with an entity like MTP which generates nearly $60 million a year into the NBC coffers, they would want to speed up the process and introduce the new host soon , so people would become familiar with him or her by Labor Day, when most of the country comes up out of their stupor and starts paying attention to the election.
It's either that or they have a person from another network in mind to take over MTP.

I agree with your sentiment, but to some on this blog, being bitter is their mother's milk. I've come to the realization way back that this blog is not really set up to be a place for rational discussion.

I mean think about it. Craig sets the tone, usually with a passive aggressive strategy that in some cases feigns objectivity, but is really designed to set one group or the other off. Take this whole "seal" subject. Is this really important? Yeah, maybe it's silly, like noise makers and funny hats, but is it important? I say no. But it does get us going into a frenzy.

Now on TM, we have folks who've brought all of their personal issues and wrapped them around the viewpoints of candidates they hardly know.

What's a discussion about alternative energy when it's much easier to post some nutcase blog entry from a conspiracy theorist? What's a discussion about a meeting with urban mayors when we can talk about whether or not Michelle Obama made an impression on The View?

So yeah, I'd like to see us give up those foibles, but I'm not holding my breath. The culture of this place is set in stone.

And even though I was surprised about your answer to thinking Obama ought to take control of the DNC, I guess it's ok and as it should be.(?) I really didn't know if I was over reacting or not.

    Flatus,

I think 'presumptuous nominee' best suits him too. And the dynasty building is the way I see it. Too few people running the country. Once I stopped blaming Obama for this election and how it was handled, I shifted the blame to the DNC. I'll never trust them again. I just feel like Dean and the Obama camp had this planned from the beginning, and that still bothers me. A lot.

  117. chloe: I absolutely agree with you. The merging of the DNC into the Obama campaign and the re-location to Chicago is something I find very alarming. To my recollection, such a thing has not happened before, even when the candidate was a Governor with no Washington background.
While I recognize that Sen Obama wants to portray himself as a Washington outsider (and, in fact, he has spent little enough time there that he can make that claim), the entire thing makes me think of The Untouchables and the Valentine's Day Massacre, etc.

  128. Oh, Chloe, reference back to Craig's remark about Mr Obama's taking over of the DNC as one of his smartest moves.

Well, there's smart as in exercising seasoned judgment, and smart as being crafty or clever. The first has a positive connotation, the other two, not so much so.

If it was smart, it's the kind of smart that elicits a, "Well, I'll never let him pull that one again!"

Magee, Craig took us back to 1980 in justifying takeovers being a common and accepted practice. I've been around for many more cycles than 1980 and to my mind they, in an historical context, are neither common nor accepted.

What the Obama campaign is doing scares the hell out of me.

BTW, coming back from Korea we cleared immigration and customs at O'Hare. What a gaggle! Fortunately Stinky had a champion wheel chair pusher and we negotiated the process in less than an hour including the tram to the other terminal. On our departure we went through Dulles; much easier.

Is it a matter of conflating what is said on the outside as being what folks here think? If so, I simply don't think you can find anything of the sort.

"Friday, Clinton and Obama will hold their joint campaign appearance at a location that has yet to be disclosed. Due to the mystery surrounding this huge campaign event, Politico had some fun this weekend guessing where the duo might appear, below: htttp://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/

"Five places Obama and Clinton should go.
Mark your calendars for June 27, when Hillary Rodham Clinton will join Barack Obama on the campaign trail for the first time and the one-time Democratic primary rivals should command the media’s undivided attention.

The ultimate location will likely be a safe choice — a vaguely symbolic town or city in a battleground state — and these are five places that would offer a maximum political return:..............."

Confused with some others that have come and gone rapidly. I'm just trying to get to a point where the personal attacks stop.

We have always been a fairly congenial group. It is only since everyone developed rather intense loyalties to particular candidates that the majority of this nonsense started. Ascribing evil motives and attacking others who just don't happen to like your political candidate is very hurtful.

  153. Craig...I got the invite today to join the Trailmix group on Facebook.

But I have to ask: What are you thinking? I looked at the group you invited, and it included one of the regular posters here who has no life, who routinely engages in vicious personal attacks, in many cases involving gender, genitalia, age, sexuality and degrees of bladder control, among other things. This poster also slams other regular posters for their lifestyles, income levels and living arrangements, and and has apparently has "cyber-stalked" other regular posters here...

So Craig. I need to know: Why would I join your group and give such a warped person any access to my "Facebook" information? I think it's a fair question.

That said, I think your idea of creating a Facebook playground for regular posters here is a nice idea. I'd absolutely love to get to know 99.9 percent of the regular posters here on a more personal level and would readily share my Facebook info with those folks. But because you piped in the Trailmix sanitary sewage line to the "offer", I will respectfully decline.

    ========================

DNC Hijacked? YES, definitely .. From everything I've read & there's a lot out there .. Dean & his fellow buddies have been planning this for awhile ..
    ===============
As far as Obama running a good campaign: NO, think it was just as dirty as the Republicans have been doing against us Democrat's for years ... I just never thought the DNC would actually turn their backs on another Democrat & drum them out of the primary before every vote was counted ...
    ======================
GOP/ Hillary ... there was too many things they knew she'd change, whereas it looks like BHO & DNC want them to stay the same .. think they've grown comfortable with all that GWB has done these 8 years ....
    =====================
    { As for Hybrids, I really do think a significant (if small) impact could be felt in a much shorter time if we got to work and treated the problem as if we were gearing up for WWII.}
Maggis: the thing is a lot of those WERE in production & were driven out of business ... have a link here somewhere that talks about the Electric car .. yes, it wasn't a big speed & distance, but think if they'd let them keep up .. in 10 years a lot good could have come from it .. but with all this talk going back & forth, nothing will be done now either .. as much as we'd like it .. afraid Big Business has too much control over our government ...

I keep thinking of that movie w/Arnold & the Showtime TV series called TOTAL RECALL & TOTAL RECALL 2070 ... In the tv versions they went into a lot about how BIG BUISNESS ran the countries all over the world ... Hmmmmm makes you wonder, doesn't it??
