Nader on a Roll

| | Comments (135)

It is always easy to make fun of Ralph Nader -- primarily because the man has no sense of humor. Here in Washington, the nation's capital of the humorless, Nader is in a league of his own.

I once picked him up for a panel discussion, tried to make a joke about my less-than-impressive vehicle, and what does Nader do? For the entire drive, he lectured me about air bags (None on the passenger side, so shoot me).

Based upon Nader's recent comments about Barack Obama it looks as though the independent presidential candidate is no more impressed with the Democratic nominee than he was with my car. Which seems odd, given how so many on the left idolize Obama as earlier generations did for Nader.

In other words, it is not helpful to Obama that Nader is not buying his messianic message of change. (Although so many Democrats despise Nader for his pivotal role in electing George W. Bush, this might make no difference at all.)

However, Nader seemed more conciliatory on Wednesday with these observations to the New York Times about the significance of Obama as possibly the nation's first black president:

"What difference it should make is that he would be more sensitive and determined to bring elevated visibility and concrete programs to deal with these issues. . . . Wouldn't a woman president be expected to be more responsive to women's rights? It's just more natural." Obama "obviously made a tactical decision that he's not going to campaign politically as Jesse Jackson did. He wants to come across that he's not politically threatening to the white power class and the liberal intelligentsia. It's been a brilliant tactic."

  7. the main thing is make sure no leaks.....put a soap and water solution onto the hook-up place and if you see bubbles, there's a leak.....I know people who have propane tanks connected to heaters which mount above them in their basement year round (basements here are above ground)......maybe not the safest thing but apparently common usage........

  10. Craig should get his own show. On Morning Jo they treat him like the red headed step-child, on Imus it is just blah talk anymore; that is Imus' fault not Craig's. Craig is not only better than Matthews or KO, he is also fairer in his approach and treatment of issues. Yep, I am convenience Craig should get his own TV show.

On that propane issue. The chance of those tanks blowing up are about the same as you walking down the street and breaking your ankle. Oh wait a minute, that actually happened to you. On second thought I suggest placing them outside.

Of course, even with ESPN, he'd have still had another ballgame going on the radio by his chair. Sometimes he seemed to be tracking four or five baseball games at once.

    Craig.... Nader is still irrelevant.....
and all you have to do is google "propane tanks + storage"..... no one would ever recommend that you keep them in your basement..... they need to be kept in a well ventilated area..... most people keep them in an outdoor shed.....

Imus seems afraid to talk about certain subjects.... when you stated that Israel wants us to attack Iran for them.... Imus obviously didn't want to touch that statement with a 100 ft pole.... might be accused of anti-Semitism.....

  19. Craig,

Okay, the hard questions. Why three tanks?? Why not one in the grill and one spare?

We just leave our spare on the back deck--no one's ever pinched it. For our lawnmower and generator gas, I have one of those low, but long and reasonably wide, plastic storage containers designed for use around swimming pools. Has enough room for a couple five-gallon gas cans, assorted lubricants and spray paints, and the chainsaw and a gas powered trimmer. Locks, too.

Sturg's hint about the soapy water is of course correct. Always did it when we had our travel trailer.

Now, I know you think we've been picking on you. So forget everything we said and just get the official word. Call the city fire marshal and ask if it's okay to store spare, filled, containers of propane in your basement.

Sturg and I are willing to take bets on the probable answer.

As I'm sitting here pondering whether or not to push the 'submit' button, the thought occurred to me that this conversation will be as productive as the fatherly advice I offer my 'adult' children.

  20. I too would love to see Craig have a show. However it will not happen because he is way too informed and not talking the corporate line. What a shame !
Speaking of Nader-- boy was he trashed last night on Chris Mathews by a couple of African-americans. I think what he said has a lot of truth but of course is considered politically incorrect. It is also sad that African Americans seem to take any criticism of Obama in such a very personal way. They have really closed ranks. I too have been mad at Nader in the past but I don't think he should be ridiculed. He has contributed tremendously to this country.

  23. OK, I want to see a Crawdad represent at one of the conventions with MoJo.

Always buy the same kind of socks; if you have a blowout, all of your other socks are matches. No more orphans. Ralph really is the Martha Stewart of politics. 39. Craig,
Your airbag story reminds me of one I read a week or two ago about some lady that picked Nader up at the airport (long ago). She said she was wearing 4 inch heels (to compensate for being so much shorter than him) and could barely keep up walking through the airport. He proceeded to spend the entire time they were together, lecturing her on the importance of wearing good shoes. It was a lengthy discussion.

As far as Nader being less than impressed with Obama, that doesn't surprise me. Obama has been so vague on so many things and as your story points out, he's very detail oriented.

As for his not buying Obama's message of change, it reminds me of what Joan Rivers (I know, bad source) said on Howard Stern (bad source) yesterday when they asked her who she was voting for. She said she didn't know, but she wasn't voting for Obama because she still didn't know what the change was.

Unfortunately, I agree. With Nader and Rivers.

``President Clinton is obviously committed to doing whatever he can and is asked to do to ensure Senator Obama is the next president of the United States.''

  50. mornin' all.

With cream cheese and lox? I just couldn't take him straight.

Ever see a propane tank leak catch fire? It's, ummm, impressive. Think rocket engine. Guy behind the inlaws was grilling on his back porch, we were in the inlaws' house watching tv. Mom in law says, what's that roaring noise? (Bear in mind, they live about 1 1/2 miles from Cleveland-Hopkins Airport, so they aren't unfamiliar with jet noise) Look outside, blue flame jet about the width of the propane tank it's coming from is shooting up through the aluminum deck cover on the back of the guy's house. Hard to say how long it lasted, but best guess - a minute. It melted a 3' hole in the 10x12 cover and an 8' wide swath of vinyl siding. When it fell over and started spinning when it was about burned out, that was quite impressive, too. Suffice it to say, it ain't something you want going on in your basement. But there's this - if yu are sleeping late because the alarm didn't go off, you'll wake up.

Anyone catch Dumya's address this morning? What a maroon. Talk about deep denial. He'll be in big trouble with the neocons now. I can't wait for the John Bolton response.

  60. Just read a few of the Nader links. Good lord, the man is (still) losing it. I admired much of his consumer protection work, his railing against corporate interests, and his willingness to touch nerves. He's become a characature of himself. He apparently has his own idea about how a black - or half black for that matter- man must run for president and have black cred or risk being perceived as kowtowing - or at least not threatening - to white interests. It is clear to me that Nader's opinion is based on his own racial assumptions. He's obviously not a post racial candidate, but he certainly does recognize that the sucessful post racial candidate can't runa campaign based on what he perceives as racial issues.

  61. The Threat and Fear Are Real. The Rhetoric Isn't

If we were not quite so taken with this exchange of hot air we would, perhaps, have noticed that another federal court decision has gone against the Bush administration's anti-terrorism detention policies, this time with a ruling in favor of a Chinese Muslim detainee. It is the second rebuke this month

Republicans would do well to stop conjuring up dangers where none exist. But Democrats must drop their reflexive response that any mention of terrorism amounts to playing the "fear card." The threat is real. So is the fear. What are these candidates going to do about it?

  69. I am not so irritated at Ralph Nader as much as I am at the IDIOTS who decided there was absolutely NO difference between the Democrats and the Republicans and therefore voted for Nader.

2000 Presidential Voting results in NH and FL

    NH: Bush: 273,559 Gore: 266,348 Nader: 22,198

FL: Bush: 2,912,790 (this one really hurts): Gore: 2,912,253 and then,
    Nader: 97,488

Bush led Gore in NH by 7211

Bush led Gore in FL by 537

Even if one was argue that only ... oh let's say 10% of the Nader voters would have voted for Gore if Nader wasn't on the ballot (a figure that I think is quite conservative), FL would have then given Gore 9749 extra votes, more than enough for him to win. Even if you say that's too high, it isn't, and only 5% voted Gore cause Nader wasn't on the ballot, that would result in approx 4874 more votes for Gore, again enough for him to win.

If you are totally pessimistic that the Nader effect didn't create the 8 years of MESS we have been in since SHRUB has been President, even if 1% of the Nader supporters voted Gore if Nader hadn't been on the ballot, that still would have been 975 extra votes for Gore... yet again a WIN.

So for those who voted for Nader in 2000, I hope they are proud of themselves. I'll leave it for others to make a laundry list of f*ck ups the Bush administration has done to our economy, our health, our sustainability, our safety, our status in the rest of the world... etc. etc. etc. . I would say the Nader voters can sleep every night with blood on their hands: aka the War in Iraq.

    That's my take on it.

The guy was sooo focused on his lessons that he couldn't even enjoy an occasional act of spontaneity. We asked him once "hey wanna go to the movie theatre"? His reply was "oh no, I must working on my opening paragraph for my essay on MELVILLE." He was so uptight that I would say "grab a towel, and some lube and go have fun with yourself or find a girlfriend or something. LOOSEN up!" To no avail. Regarding the FAIRNESS DOCTRINE: "I beg to differ, my dear sir". Equal time balances access to the media and offers a platform to bring other views that are unrepresented or underrepresent in broadcast media.

You state that it is a distraction. "Pardon me, but I believe you are in error" .. Do examine how broadcast media has changed since the Fairness Doctrine was put to rest. It is time to resurrect it and give us a more level playing field, especially when dealing with the mainstream broadcast media.

If you really, really wanted to stop deaths of children you should outlaw swimming pools not guns.

The only way the statisticians can make the numbers for death by firearms in children is by making it "under 18" and including all gang and drug oriented crimes. For most "children" under 18, death by guns is so rare as to be almost negligible and far below accident and disease.

I worked 10 years in radio, and it worked well. We would always use this disclaimer: "the following commentary does not necessarily reflect the views of the staff or management of KAOS Olympia Community Radio or The Evergreen State College. If you wish to provide another viewpoint, contact the operations manager at blah blah blah"

The broadcast media are the ownership of the public. "Originally contained in United States public utility law, the "public interest, convenience and necessity" provision was incorporated into the Radio Act of 1927 to become the operational standard for broadcast licensees."

"The obligation to serve the "public interest, convenience and necessity" is demonstrated through myriad broadcast policies. Licensing requirements, the equal-time and candidate access rules, the Fairness Doctrine and the Public Broadcasting and Cable Acts are just some examples of regulations which were implemented to safeguard the public from the possible selfish motives of broadcasters."

    http://www.museum.tv/archives/etv/P/htmlP/publicintere/publicintere.htm

And I disagree that it is "absolute government control" ... It is absolute control by the owners of broadcast media... which means ALL citizens of the United States.

As long as someone is not rude, then I take EVERYONE'S opinion VERY seriously. As long as I don't think they're trying to sell me something. I can like some of Nader's idea, and still not consider ever voting for him. He's says a lot that is worth listening to. Some of it yes, some of it no. 102. Tom, it's a constitutional right under the federal constitution, so to avoid problems similar to the ones the DC law presented any restrcition should originate with the federal government, within the scope of the right conferred. It makes no sense whatever for one city or state, or any multiple of the same, to restrict a right embodied in the constitution. Restricting constitutional rights to address modern problems, whether local or national, is a dangerous undertaking IMHO. It has led to the DC hangun ban, FISA, the Habeus Corpus problems at Guantanamo, downloading electronic information at the borders without reasonable suspicion of wrongdoing or warrants, and the Fairness Doctrine, to name just a few misguided attempts to protect us. Don't misunderstand me - I think that from one perspective or another, each of these efforts has originated in well meaning people with good intentions. That is not enough.

And bear in mind, that I am not talking about the infrastructure for the technologies - that is not owned by the public even in the radio/television context.

And, finally the Court addressed the (fallacious) contention that what the Founders' intended was that the arms could be held solely for use in the organized government-sponsored militias, e.g., the National Guard and similar organizations.

Pogo says it somewhat differently, but what I hear him saying is, if you think the Constitution's provisions so out of touch with modern realities, then you must amend that scripture, not write laws or make decrees, circumventing it.

  118. As I have posted previously,

My Godfather was in the same Harvard Law School class as Ralph Nader. He mentioned the following to me that always stuck:

    * Ralph Nader graduated at the bottom of his class. On graduation day, my uncle kicked in $5 to the pot that is always collected for the person at bottom of the group. I think Ralph left campus with an extra $150 that day.

    * Nader was quiet but considered by his classmates to be a bit aloof.

    * He was a perceptive person. While working on his expose against GM's Corvair, GM sought to discredit Nader with a sex scandal. My uncle said that while Nader was never overt in his sexuality, it was easy to figure out that he did not like women. So it was easy for Nader to figure out that GM was up to something when a steady stream of female escorts tried to seduce him to no avail. This btw, is a reason why my uncle refused to by a GM vehicle for the last 40 years of his life. He rationalized that if they couldn't figure out something like that, when it was pretty obvious, lord knows what details were being missed in the cars...

    * If the right's opinion is that people should have unfettered access to fire arms

    * That all citizens be allowed to carry concealed firearms in all public places

How can they then justify people being disarmed if they are going to a public event, featuring a public official, whether it be a member of Congress or the President?

I think that is up to the individual state. Here in NC you can't walk into a bank with a concealed weapon even if you have a concealed weapons permit. Like wise you can enter a bar, church, school, or any place that post concealed weapons are not allowed on the premises. Of course criminals rarely abide by laws, or requests.

  129. Bear, the court has stated in numerous opinions that rights are not absolute, and the states can impose reasonable restrictions on rights so long as they don't legislate the rights out of existence. The rub is that the court gets to determine whether a restriction is reasonable. The "bear arms" part of the right would lead to your conclusion. The court would not likely agree that restrictions against carrying concealed weapons are unreasonable in many instances.

It really wasn't a conversation as much as a pronouncement of his that I need to find better shoes if I'm going to be going places in life. After that I just kept skittering alongside until we reached the car. Then he got into the back seat of the mid-sized sedan with shoulder-harnesses for all passengers (a requirement in his speaking contract) and fell asleep.

Another memorable moment with Ralph also had to do with shoes-- maybe he's got a fetish. Anyway, we were all hanging around the Nader empire offices in the Carnegie Building just off Dupont Circle in DC. Ralph ambles in and starts chatting about the problems with our disposable society. He starts talking about his footwear. He points out that th shoes he wears were purchased when he was in the Army, several decades before. They are regulation Army shoes -- plain black. He wears these with the black Army socks that he also purchased when he was in the Army. He said that as a young soldier he was so impressed with the quality of the shoes and socks that he made a point to make a bulk purchase of them at the and of his enlistment. He bought 12 pair of the shoes and 36 pair of the socks. Thirty years later (at the time of the conversation), he said he had gone through most of the socks, but he still had a few pairs of shoes left, which he keeps getting resoled, so he figured he would not have to buy shoes for the rest of his life.

Okay -- now I'm off again to a meeting. See y'all later!

  133. I missed Craig on Imus this week however Imus really gets under my skin when it comes to the Clintons. What Imus did at that Press dinner was really unforgivable. Even for comics there are boundaries and how cruel with Hillary sitting there to reference Bill's infidelities. After that the relationship cooled. I appreciate that Imus has been good to Craig and that is good. Craig, as always has been very loyal to Imus even through his"troubles." I just wish Imus was a little more charitable when it comes to the Clintons.
