Karl and Me

| | Comments (465)

A new book on Karl Rove, "Machiavelli's Shadow" by Paul Alexander, recalls a personal experience I had with George W. Bush's political guru. I had forgotten that I talked to the author until reading this excerpt from a review of the book on the Washington Examiner's web site:

"CQ's Craig Crawford recalls this moment from 1999, when Crawford was editing National Journal's Hotline: 'I thought Bush was called Bush Junior,' Crawford told Alexander. 'So, at Hotline, because we needed a device in our headlines to delineate him from Bush Senior, we were just calling him Bush Junior. Well, one day I picked up the phone and there was this person screaming at me on the other end. It was just nonstop yelling. It was Karl Rove and I mean he tore my head off over our calling Bush Bush Junior.'"

All true. I haven't seen the book yet and don't know whether Alexander included this detail: It was the only time I ever talked to Rove. His rudeness in the conversation described above caused me to decide that life is too short to ever again waste time talking to such a jerk.

That was a lucky move. Had I courted Rove as a source, as so many of my colleagues did, I might have had to hire a lawyer, or worse -- as so many of my colleagues experienced in the CIA leak case.

Anyway, the big news in Alexander's book is the revelation that Bush actually fired Rove in church. Read all about it in the Examiner review.

  1. Craig,

I remember well when you were a regular guest on
Paul Alexander & John Batchelor's radio show.

You have just gotten better with age.

  2. By the way, I just realized that humor is lost here....burrito, the scotch and tonic was a joke from an old movie......

  3. Craig -- that's fascinating! It makes you wonder why Rove hasn't been called out for his temper before....

  4. Patsi, aside from all the talk going on around here, may I ask did you also write a book about tony orlando.

  5. Craig glad you escaped the wrath of Rove unscathed. I have a feeling come this time next year Mr. Rove may be looking at some time behind bars. Lets hope he gets a big ugly angry cellmate.

  6. Also, based on the Examiner Review, wonder if Paul Alexander will get to "sell" his book on FOX, since Karl Rove is now in residence there

  7. "Patsi, aside from all the talk going on around here, may I ask did you also write a book about tony orlando."

I wrote his autobiography with him. I know many consider him tragically unhip, but his musical history spans the time from teen idols/Brill Building to 70s singles driven pop....if you are into music history, he's an interesting guy.

  8. Thanks Patsi, & yes the history of music (well NYC
    based old time R& R, doo-wap, & the "girl groups" )
have always been of interest. I think I remember an early Orlando song - "Bless You" long before the

  12. Coreen -- I'm glad you recall "Bless You" -- it was the first hit that Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote together. And Tony always sang it for his little sister, Rhonda, who had CP. As a kid, he often stayed up with her most of the night with her singing because it calmed her and helped keep her from going into spasms from the CP. He really is a good man.

  14. And Brian....I doubt Tony is a big hawk. I haven't talked to him in several years. He did, however, piss off some of his liberal friends -- Freddie Prinz for one -- because despite being a longtime Democrat he ended up supporting Gerald Ford . It happened after Tony met Ford, confronted him about his Nixon pardon, then stayed and talked to him for about an hour as to the reasons Ford believed he had to do it. Tony liked his candor. More importantly, Tony met and absolutely adored Betty Ford -- a force of nature if there ever was one.

  17. During an interview with Sen. John McCain on Monday's NBC Nightly News, Brian Williams noted that "the videotape clip of your comment about being in Iraq 100 years if need be, of course, is still kicking around," and then asked, "[G]iven your support for the surge and where you believe this nation is in Iraq today, where do you see it going and will your support be there for however many U.S. troops are required?"

McCain answered flatly: "Yes. And the fact is we are winning in Iraq."

But the larger issue is this: I don't know what Obama really plans to do about this Middle East clusterfu%k. He may -- just may -- feel behind the eight ball and vote present once again.

  27. Here is what I just cannot understand. People screaming over and over that Iraq is the big issue.

Well a big DUH to that! I was screaming -- as were most on this board -- when it started. And as for the votes....well, while I never believed Bush could be trusted, I am not so frigging arrogant as to say that I fully understood at that point how the Neo-Cons were controlling the administration.

What I DID understand is that when Colin Powell said "You break it, you've bought it" he spoke the truth. George Bush has put this country in the most untenable situation imaginable. There is no easy way out of this, and if people think that just starting to pull troops out is going to work, well, I suggest they take a long hard look.

The blogger boyz seem to think we can just exit stage left. Sorry -- but if we don't play this precisely, we are creating a Middle Eastern powder keg.

The blogger crowd is so frigging ignorant that they think leaving Iraq is going to be like leaving Vietnam.

This in no way is an endorsement of McCain's ideas -- whatever they are -- or Obama's -- whatever they are.

If some of you want to know one of the biggest reasons I am pissed it is this: we had a chance to have one person in the White House, Hillary Clinton, who just might have maneuvered us out of Iraq and restored this country. Now, we are screwed now matter who wins this general election. It is ruly a choice between your favorite Menendez brother.

Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | June 10, 2008 2:28 AM

  28. "Going to work" for what? What is the goal? Just get our boys back home and let Israel fight its own wars.

    Posted by: champ | June 10, 2008 2:35 AM

  29. Craig, quite a story...I clicked onto The Examiner review and had to laugh...comparing your remembrances with the ridiculous 2007 "MC Rove" dance.
I chuckled hard to read Rove got the ax in church, because Rove resembles a local preacher here in town.
This gang CAN provide us with a few laughs along the way, even though it's damn hard to get past all the death they have rained down onto Iraq.
Here's an opinion I have been forming: Most people I know accept the Holocaust as fact; those same folks hold Holocaust Deniers in low, scathing esteem.
So now, as the election nears, I keep running into arguments about the impact Bush's war has had on the Iraqi civilian population. We've all seen the varying numbers, and I am not here to copy charts and the like, but to point out that I believe that those people who seem to think there have only been a few hundred Iraqi civilian casualities all together since Shock and Awe, are JUST AS BAD as Holocaust Deniers.
McCain has supported this kiling all along and he has plans to re-vamp the plan and keep us there in one way, one role or another, for as long as he has any influence.
Obama is a hawk, too, but not like McCain! McCain is DERANGED as was/is Bush Junior (there ya go, Craig!).
Y'know? We had to live through Reagan Democrats (like Jim Webb) once before. It would just be a shame if it turns out to be McCain pulls it off like Reagan did, swaying the Reagan Democrat-types , and winning because of that.

  30. Champ -- it's obvious you have no clue about what we've done and what we are leaving over there. Have you ever taken one history class? 32. Good Morning.....

    Yup!

    It is that time again.
Some people just need to denigrate and belittle others, as their last grasp to get some comfort in their fading solace....
    Get a life.
You do not have to insult a human being ( even if it is a virtual human) to get your point across. If the person does not see eye to eye with you...whatever...

The more we do this, the more we alienate eachother in voting for the other candidate.
Someone said we need a democrat in the whitehouse...well it is not going to happen if people keep biting one another...

    Dyeezzzzz
    get a life out there....

    On another note.
Has anyone seen/obtained the blueprint to the $ 50 bn package Obama is referring to?
I need the information, seen as I am hearing that the repubs are going to have a field day with it.

    Posted by: Jason | June 10, 2008 3:01 AM

  33. patsi: Hillary Clinton had five major time frames to challenge Bush on Iraq and admit her vote to empower Bush's charge into Iraq was wrong. Frank Rich wrote a detailed column on this last year.
She is a hawk, and she was not going to get us out of Iraq like she vaguely promised. She, Biden, Obama...all were and are for the keeping of the US flame in Iraq.
You favor keeping US troops there anyway, and you are against a cut-and -run.
Keeping US troops in Iraq just makes it worse. It generally gets worse all the time as it is. Surges, McCain's phony photo-ops...but eh US has mucked up the entire region.
We've done enough there and must leave. If you believe we must stay there for reasons you believe in, fine, but how d you think all the billions it will cost are going to get paid?
Do you think Iraqi oil will suddenly start showing us a profit margin for "installing Democracy in The Region?"
Nope, it's long past the time to leave, and leave we should.
Actually, there's no sense arguing all this...we ain't leaving no way...Obama wants to punish Iran one way or another as he clearly has shown with that speech to AIPAC last week.
Bush really started something, didn't he?
So when you write you want troops to stay and I want them to leave, you win, nd I am just "bumpin' my gums", as Ol' Dizzy Dean used to say.
Vietnam's doing Ok, right? I have a friend who is a generation younger that me and he married a Vietnamese lady and is there now for a family wedding...he reports Vietrnam is doing fine.
Remember what we were told were happen if and when we left Vietnam? Bloodbath was the word used mostly.
The truth is , we have no business destroying a country and then saying it will get worse if we leave...what bullshit! It was better before we destroyed it in the first place, even with Saddam and sons.

  35. With regard to Iraq...

I cannot believe that people think that we can pull out of Iraq in an instant.
We are there and made a mess out of it. We just cannot simply pack up and leave.. Everyone who believes that, needs to really start thinking about the debt we owe to people if we leave the country in the state that it is........

I agree with all you wrote above. As one of the old
bats, (43 and not using a cane, yet,) younger than Obama, I might add, I support you. (I don't think either of us look all that senile in our photos on the Trail Mix video).

Brian constantly uses ageism to attack Hillary women, just as Camp Obama uses it and misogyny--two more reasons I want nothing to do with Obama and his group of Huffington posters who seem to represent a new age of hypocrisy.

  39. We don't owe them shit???? Jesus, Mary and Joseph! WE owe them a SHIT LOAD. We've bombed them back into the stone age in many areas. We cannot screw this exit up. And if anyone thinks we can just say "oops" and stroll on back to Starbucks...well, that's the arrogant American mentality that got us in there in the first place.

People like Brian keep threatening others that "blood will be on your hands." Well, sports fans, the blood is already there. And we have to recognize that thousands of Iraqis may die depending on how we handle our exit.

This is not an endorsement of either candidate. It is just the damned truth.

Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | June 10, 2008 3:24 AM

  40. And what exactly are we going to do for them, Jay? If we stay there long enough, do you think they will suddenly see the light, embrace democracy, Shia hugging Sunni, and there will be a big song and dance number? Ain't going to happen.

Let Syria, Turkey, and Iran clean up our mess. We might as well go back into the old playbook and re-install another despot.

That was his last drink, as he and Bill W. , a stockbroker from Brooklyn, and a drunk, carried forth an idea that has saved millions from depravity, by showing them a way to just not drink, one day at a time. This is the 73rd anniversary of Alcoholics Anonymous.

When will 'our commitment' to the Iraqi people end? When Iraq is peaceful and prosperous? If our country is bankrupted in the process, will it have been worth it? What if our country is bankrupted AND Iraq remains a war-zone? Would that be the best-case scenario for you?

Books I'm hunting? ' Log of the Sea of Cortez' by, of all people, John Steinbeck. Also 'Into a Deser Place' by a Brit named Graham MacIntosh. Not for me - for my brother-in-law for Father's Day. He's such a winner tghat it's fun to pamper him.

What was all this shit re the early morning people being pleasant?

Hey, champ - I'm one of those older folk . I'll be 66 on .12/26 . Am I the oldest? Believe me, we learned to challenge - where do you think Mario Savio came from? Also, since you weren't there, how do you know what we were taught? Further, I don't see a lot of the youngsters questioning Obama - in fact, they (you) believe everything he promises.........the 4th biggest lie.

  68. Ok, my statement regarding 'the older folks' and indoctrination was arrogant, ignorant, and unfounded. We stand on the shoulders of giants, indeed. Unfortunately, we also lie underneath the boot of them, too.

Your statement, Beth, "- in fact, they (you) believe everything he promises", is unfounded also. Don't assume what I believe. I am as suspicious of the Obama phenomenon (Obamamenon, copyright me) as you are, if not more so, and have referred to the cult-of-personality that has developed around him frequently in my posts here.

I'm sure you got a better education than the majority of kids these days do. Kids in public schools are just trained to take tests these days, and when they go home they are bombarded with all sorts of distractions. I hope that as a population we are not getting stupider, but only time will tell, I suppose.

You're a wonderful advocate for thoughtful, reflective governance.

For decades Israel has acted as our military proxy in the Middle East. They've been shedding their blood doing what we've asked them to do. A lot of this is because they share our grave concern over the most extreme radicals in the region; but, they are also recognizing our support of their dream back in 1947 by being loyal to us, often, I'm sure, even when it's against their better judgment.

Walking out leaves Israel, Jordan, Egypt and a potentially productive Iraq, along with others, in untenable positions.

Ya know what won't happen before November? BO will not prove himself to be any more capable of leading this nation in a positive direction. What will happen before November? The GOP will bring out all of the stuff that the MSM suppressed during the primary season & BO will lose.

The only thing needed is a cohesive voting plan for Americans who are not far left or far right; the end of two-party reign. Now that would be real change.

Nice to be mentioned by Bush's brain, no, Craig? I think turd blossom was a perfect moniker for that a-hole. Every word is just one more fart.

Well the republicans have done a bang up job of taking care of the economy -

    http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/business/business-markets-stocks.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

"What we have here is a market that is very nervous," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Avalon Partners in New York.

"You have slower economic activity and you have inflation. I think we are in the midst of a small dose of stagflation, where the economy is limping along with higher inflation."

And we thought it couldn't get worse under Bernanke. McCain got it wrong saying that Obama sounds like he's running for Carter's second term - if he continues Bush's economic programs - and that's exactly what he's advocating isn't it - it's he who's running for Carter's second term - and Bush's 3rd at the same time. And this is who we are considering voting for? Please, think again.

I've been a lifer Democratic so I'm no super fan of McCain, but I know the dirty politics of Count Axelrod and Camp Obama only too well after witnessing their nuclear attacks on the Clintons. As far as McCain getting some things wrong--have you counted the times Obama has been wrong in the last year? I have. He has no expertise on the economy, either.

Right now, I have no preference between Obama & McCain, but in order to make a choice, one of them will have to earn that vote. To date, neither comes close.

Just wondering---have you by any chance read Sen. Obama's "economy" speech given yesterday?

If so, what measures, if any, were proposed that will actually assist homeowner's facing imminent foreclosure--or those with maxed out credit cards---as well as diminishing home values--not to mention the cost of putting gas in your vehicle to get to work each day--or the escalating food costs to feed
your family or the ever increasing energy costs to heat, light & air condition your home?

Brad is the band leader of the Boxmasters. The wife and I saw the band at the House of Blues in Dallas last summer. It was a good show. They did a lot of the cover stuff they talked about in the Times article. It is a throwback guitar album so you might consider buying it. I recommend it.

  138. Patsi and others.....

I feel you. I can have much more examples of how the media is trashing specifics.

Indeed not only in politics but also very deliberately in music. I was a deejay for years, financing my studies, I know that part as well.
Certain music was not allowed to be played. Madonna was non existent at most of Fl radiostations eventhough her career surged. Then again Mariah and Whitney were all that. This is still happening at the moment, as we speak....... How is it possible that a song is sold 1 million times but cannot get airplay on a station? Because deejays deny it the airplay...the reasoning behind it? MONEY and POWER...

Madonna and the child adoption, caused all media headlines. CNN called it an outrage and had it as a headline for weeks...Practically dospatching two journlists to Malawi. Did anyone notice or report that the case was finalized two weeks ago? Madonna was given the green light and the little boy is now officially adopted. Did CNN report this????

This crosses over to each and every discipline in the USA today. Be it politics, be it music, be it TV...be it ANYTHING. The media dictates and the people follow.....

The good thing is....People are waking up! Really. Someone said the other day that: if one thing was learned during this primary is that people have become more knowledgeable...They simply turn off the TV or the radio and find their own sources.

And that is something the big execs know. They are losing grip and they are clinging to what was...in a way that you cannot imagine...

Hmmmm, I am going too far probably....LOL :))
    Anyway.....

  139. Patsi,

Thanks for your early morning comments about things
over than politics--your knowledge of various topics
is enlightening & enjoyable. You enrich the discussions.

  140. Some of Mrs. Clinton’s largest outstanding bills are to some of her closest advisers, who might be willing to cut her a deal. Mrs. Clinton, for example, owes nearly $5 million to the firm of her former pollster and senior strategist, Mark Penn.

  141. Pogo,

I just found this on Brad's website

    June 19
The Late Late Show w/ Craig Ferguson
w/ Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters

maybe you can stay up late and see and hear it.

  142. Jason...

And next, they will almost certainly make an effort to control the internet(s), as it is dangerous to their grip on power if we, the people, can communicate freely, openly and honestly about what we believe them to be up to!

  143. HD, thanks for the info. As a throwback guitar afficionado, I expect I'll appreciate it. Does BBT have a decent voice (not that that's all that important in R&R).

  144. Coreen, I haven't read Obama's econ plan in a while - but I will. Mine's going to be a vote against more than a vote for.

  145. Relax, liberals. You've already won

But in the last decade, even during the seven-plus years of the Bush presidency, the center of American politics has moved considerably to the left. Whether Obama or McCain wins the White House, liberalism has already won the national debate about the future of the country.

  146. Hey Craig, did you see I wrote that in the blog yesterday, in between my scuffles with HD?

  147. HD, I doubt that my eyes will be cooperating by the time Ferguson's musical guests appear. Checking the old eyelids for cracks will probably be the only activity I'll be engaged in by then.

  148. I don't know if CHAMP is still here, but I would like do dispute his statement (and what seems to be CW) that we went into Iraq because of Israel.
In testimony before Congress, in response to a question from Jesse Jackson Jr, and after the third attempt to get an answer, Paul Wolfowitz finally stated that we had to go into Iraq in order to get our bases out of Saudi Arabia.
This entire immoral and unfortunate invasion can be laid at the door of George HW Bush who did not properly instruct our representative in Baghdad before the invasion of Kuwait, who encouraged the Kurds and the southern Shia to rise up afterwards, and who accepted the responsibility of patrolling the No-Fly zones. The presence of an American Air Base in Saudi Arabia was the proximate cause of the Al Qaeda attacks, including 9/11. I believe wholeheartedly that we invaded Iraq at the behest of the Saudis who balked at us removing our military from Saudi Arabia so long as Saddam remained in power.

  149. True HB.....

But that is where there grip is totally non existent. They grip their own websites, but not the other blogs..
Why do you think people likek perezHilton are hot?
Because they let everyone talk what they want.
Love them or hate them...the blogs are free and give information from which you can choose and make up your own mind.

When I was young CNN was everything to me. Well, I have banned that station for nearly a month now (TV and internet) and it´s good. The big guns cannot dictate anymore and that is why they get fierce and radical..... The power they once had is slipping big time.

Exhibit A: The difference in blogs on HillaryClinton.com and BarrackObama.com.......

  150. Craig -- that's fascinating! It makes you wonder why Rove hasn't been called out for his temper before....

Perhaps he is suffering from PTSD?

Posted by: EuroTom Author Profile Page | June 10, 2008 10:29 AM

  151. And I agree with Patsi, Jason and others ... notwithstanding that the invasion was not just wrong in terms of national interest but immoral -- to pull out on an arbitrary timetable compounds the error.
And, in fact, the folk hero of the hour, Sen Obama, through his principal foreign policy adviser has said that the speed with which troops would be pulled out would depend on the situation that obtains when he takes office and consults with the military men on the ground.

Posted by: maggisd Author Profile Page | June 10, 2008 10:30 AM

  152. Coreen: If you are concerned about the home mortgage crisis, you might want to google the name Penny Pritzker. She is the senior financial person for Sen Obama's campaign and has a rather troubling history with subprime lending.

Posted by: maggisd Author Profile Page | June 10, 2008 10:35 AM

  153. Mrs. Clinton, for example, owes nearly $5 million to the firm of her former pollster and senior strategist, Mark Penn.

Jesus Mary of God, what a twit he was. If I were Mark Penn I would be EMBARRASSED by how I acted with colleagues and how I screwed over the campaign time and again with bad advice that hurt her chances. In fact, if I were Mark Penn, I'd not only mark this one "gratis", I'd pay HERE for malfeasance !! I suppose the lawyerly types can tell me if there is such a reason.

  154. Brian: You mentioned that McCain supports NAFTA. If you do some googling, you will find that Sen Obama has called himself a free trader, that he is in favor of fast track authority and that he was the 60th vote against a move to attempt to add more stringent labor and environmental standards to existing trade agreements.

Posted by: maggisd Author Profile Page | June 10, 2008 10:38 AM

  155. EuroTom: I doubt that Penn could be successfully sued for campaign malfeasance, but if I were him I sure wouldn't go around writing Op-Ed pieces about what went wrong .... or, if I did, it would be one short sentence...I screwed up.

  156. Coreen, I read the plan for homeowners in imminent danger of losing their homes - it sounds like it could help - I question whether congress would pass it, but it sounds like it could provide some relief if it did pass. Some of the underlying assumptions don't ring tru, though - for instance the assertion that mostly the rich get to take the home mortgage deduction because they are the ones who itemize, while that sounds like it would be true, above an income of $50,000, 58% and up itemize, and just under 18% of those making less than $50,000 itemize, probably because of the mortgage deduction since it is the single largest deduction most tax filers can take advantage of.

Mean, but fair enough ! :-D

  159. Thanks Maggi, I know of Ms. Pritzker's ties to the
subprime mortgage creation & its aftermath through Superior Bank.

But my concerns are directed to specific current daily problems facing my clients who are undergoing financial meltdown right now. And there are limited solutions to their problems.

Posted by: pogo Author Profile Page | June 10, 2008 10:47 AM

  161. Coreen, the problem with any plan by Obama or McCain (I just threw McCain in for grins) is that nothig they propose will do anything until about a year from now - which will be too late for many people caught up in the escalating mortgage rates of the subprimes (ironic in the face of incredibly low rates in the prime dontcha think?)

  162. Barack Obama Condones Coordinated Internet Harassment by his Thugs

"The idea here is to turn the internet into a constant Pro Obama "echo". This includes going where people who do not support Obama are. It also included driving all Hillary supporters away from presumably "objective" sites until the sites become All Obama All The Time.

The most recent example of Obama-Planned onslaught was seen yesterday, when many established bloggers' and message board users' names and their links ... were nearly simultaneously forged in messages on forums and blogs all over the net."

  163. Coreen: Since you are apparently in the industry, so to speak, do you have any ideas of your own? Or do you see anyone with good ideas to help those already in trouble? Obviously we need more regulation going forward and both candidates believe in regulating the marketplace. But, what can be done now? Did Hillary's idea of bloc grant
