Karl and Me

A new book on Karl Rove, "Machiavelli's Shadow" by Paul Alexander, recalls a personal experience I had with George W. Bush's political guru. I had forgotten that I talked to the author until reading this excerpt from a review of the book on the Washington Examiner's web site:

"CQ's Craig Crawford recalls this moment from 1999, when Crawford was editing National Journal's Hotline: 'I thought Bush was called Bush Junior,' Crawford told Alexander. 'So, at Hotline, because we needed a device in our headlines to delineate him from Bush Senior, we were just calling him Bush Junior. Well, one day I picked up the phone and there was this person screaming at me on the other end. It was just nonstop yelling. It was Karl Rove and I mean he tore my head off over our calling Bush Bush Junior.'"

All true. I haven't seen the book yet and don't know whether Alexander included this detail: It was the only time I ever talked to Rove. His rudeness in the conversation described above caused me to decide that life is too short to ever again waste time talking to such a jerk.

That was a lucky move. Had I courted Rove as a source, as so many of my colleagues did, I might have had to hire a lawyer, or worse -- as so many of my colleagues experienced in the CIA leak case.

Anyway, the big news in Alexander's book is the revelation that Bush actually fired Rove in church. Read all about it in the Examiner review.

  1. Craig,

I remember well when you were a regular guest on
Paul Alexander & John Batchelor's radio show.

You have just gotten better with age.

  2. By the way, I just realized that humor is lost here....burrito, the scotch and tonic was a joke from an old movie......

  3. Craig -- that's fascinating! It makes you wonder why Rove hasn't been called out for his temper before....

  5. Also, based on the Examiner Review, wonder if Paul Alexander will get to "sell" his book on FOX, since Karl Rove is now in residence there

  6. "Patsi, aside from all the talk going on around here, may I ask did you also write a book about tony orlando."

I wrote his autobiography with him. I know many consider him tragically unhip, but his musical history spans the time from teen idols/Brill Building to 70s singles driven pop....if you are into music history, he's an interesting guy.

  7. Thanks Patsi, & yes the history of music (well NYC
    based old time R& R, doo-wap, & the "girl groups" )
have always been of interest. I think I remember an early Orlando song - "Bless You" long before the
yellow ribbon or his tv show.

  8. Wouldn't know that, I believe he has a theater in

  10. Coreen -- I'm glad you recall "Bless You" -- it was the first hit that Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote together. And Tony always sang it for his little sister, Rhonda, who had CP. As a kid, he often stayed up with her most of the night with her singing because it calmed her and helped keep her from going into spasms from the CP. He really is a good man.

  18. Here is what I just cannot understand. People screaming over and over that Iraq is the big issue.

Well a big DUH to that! I was screaming -- as were most on this board -- when it started. And as for the votes....well, while I never believed Bush could be trusted, I am not so frigging arrogant as to say that I fully understood at that point how the Neo-Cons were controlling the administration.

What I DID understand is that when Colin Powell said "You break it, you've bought it" he spoke the truth. George Bush has put this country in the most untenable situation imaginable. There is no easy way out of this, and if people think that just starting to pull troops out is going to work, well, I suggest they take a long hard look.

The blogger boyz seem to think we can just exit stage left. Sorry -- but if we don't play this precisely, we are creating a Middle Eastern powder keg.

The blogger crowd is so frigging ignorant that they think leaving Iraq is going to be like leaving Vietnam.

This in no way is an endorsement of McCain's ideas -- whatever they are -- or Obama's -- whatever they are.

If some of you want to know one of the biggest reasons I am pissed it is this: we had a chance to have one person in the White House, Hillary Clinton, who just might have maneuvered us out of Iraq and restored this country. Now, we are screwed now matter who wins this general election. It is ruly a choice between your favorite Menendez brother.

Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | June 10, 2008 2:28 AM

  19. "Going to work" for what? What is the goal? Just get our boys back home and let Israel fight its own wars.

    Posted by: champ | June 10, 2008 2:35 AM

  20. Craig, quite a story...I clicked onto The Examiner review and had to laugh...comparing your remembrances with the ridiculous 2007 "MC Rove" dance.
I chuckled hard to read Rove got the ax in church, because Rove resembles a local preacher here in town.
This gang CAN provide us with a few laughs along the way, even though it's damn hard to get past all the death they have rained down onto Iraq.
Here's an opinion I have been forming: Most people I know accept the Holocaust as fact; those same folks hold Holocaust Deniers in low, scathing esteem.
So now, as the election nears, I keep running into arguments about the impact Bush's war has had on the Iraqi civilian population. We've all seen the varying numbers, and I am not here to copy charts and the like, but to point out that I believe that those people who seem to think there have only been a few hundred Iraqi civilian casualities all together since Shock and Awe, are JUST AS BAD as Holocaust Deniers.
McCain has supported this kiling all along and he has plans to re-vamp the plan and keep us there in one way, one role or another, for as long as he has any influence.
Obama is a hawk, too, but not like McCain! McCain is DERANGED as was/is Bush Junior (there ya go, Craig!).
Y'know? We had to live through Reagan Democrats (like Jim Webb) once before. It would just be a shame if it turns out to be McCain pulls it off like Reagan did, swaying the Reagan Democrat-types , and winning because of that.

  21. Champ -- it's obvious you have no clue about what we've done and what we are leaving over there. Have you ever taken one history class? This is not about whether this illegal and immoral war should have happened. Obviously this country has blood on its hands. But we better know what the hell we're doing now, or we will rue the day.

  23. Good Morning.....

    Yup!

    It is that time again.
Some people just need to denigrate and belittle others, as their last grasp to get some comfort in their fading solace....
    Get a life.
You do not have to insult a human being ( even if it is a virtual human) to get your point across. If the person does not see eye to eye with you...whatever...

The more we do this, the more we alienate eachother in voting for the other candidate.
Someone said we need a democrat in the whitehouse...well it is not going to happen if people keep biting one another...

    Dyeezzzzz
    get a life out there....

    On another note.
Has anyone seen/obtained the blueprint to the $ 50 bn package Obama is referring to?
I need the information, seen as I am hearing that the repubs are going to have a field day with it.

    Posted by: Jason | June 10, 2008 3:01 AM

  24. patsi: Hillary Clinton had five major time frames to challenge Bush on Iraq and admit her vote to empower Bush's charge into Iraq was wrong. Frank Rich wrote a detailed column on this last year.
She is a hawk, and she was not going to get us out of Iraq like she vaguely promised. She, Biden, Obama...all were and are for the keeping of the US flame in Iraq.
You favor keeping US troops there anyway, and you are against a cut-and -run.
Keeping US troops in Iraq just makes it worse. It generally gets worse all the time as it is. Surges, McCain's phony photo-ops...but eh US has mucked up the entire region.
We've done enough there and must leave. If you believe we must stay there for reasons you believe in, fine, but how d you think all the billions it will cost are going to get paid?
Do you think Iraqi oil will suddenly start showing us a profit margin for "installing Democracy in The Region?"
Nope, it's long past the time to leave, and leave we should.
Actually, there's no sense arguing all this...we ain't leaving no way...Obama wants to punish Iran one way or another as he clearly has shown with that speech to AIPAC last week.
Bush really started something, didn't he?
So when you write you want troops to stay and I want them to leave, you win, nd I am just "bumpin' my gums", as Ol' Dizzy Dean used to say.
Vietnam's doing Ok, right? I have a friend who is a generation younger that me and he married a Vietnamese lady and is there now for a family wedding...he reports Vietrnam is doing fine.
Remember what we were told were happen if and when we left Vietnam? Bloodbath was the word used mostly.
The truth is , we have no business destroying a country and then saying it will get worse if we leave...what bullshit! It was better before we destroyed it in the first place, even with Saddam and sons.

  26. With regard to Iraq...

I cannot believe that people think that we can pull out of Iraq in an instant.
We are there and made a mess out of it. We just cannot simply pack up and leave.. Everyone who believes that, needs to really start thinking about the debt we owe to people if we leave the country in the state that it is........

My country owes them for going there and DESTROYING everything they had.
We OWE them because, my dumb ass, egotistical president went there and enforced a war that will never ever be finished. A war that was senseless, baseless and was full of lies......

Let Syria, Turkey, and Iran clean up our mess. We might as well go back into the old playbook and re-install another despot.

When will 'our commitment' to the Iraqi people end? When Iraq is peaceful and prosperous? If our country is bankrupted in the process, will it have been worth it? What if our country is bankrupted AND Iraq remains a war-zone? Would that be the best-case scenario for you?

We started it as a country, because the guy representing us and his administration started it. So it is OUR war and not just a war by a certain right or left wing..... Eventhough I oppose it and may not like the fact that we are not doing #$%& there, we cannot just up and leave.

  73. Patsi, I know you'll be sleeping-in this morning, but I just read the early morning comments. Thanks for your willingness to jump in an commit to doing things responsibly as we leave Iraq.

You're a wonderful advocate for thoughtful, reflective governance.

For decades Israel has acted as our military proxy in the Middle East. They've been shedding their blood doing what we've asked them to do. A lot of this is because they share our grave concern over the most extreme radicals in the region; but, they are also recognizing our support of their dream back in 1947 by being loyal to us, often, I'm sure, even when it's against their better judgment.

Walking out leaves Israel, Jordan, Egypt and a potentially productive Iraq, along with others, in untenable positions.

Ya know what won't happen before November? BO will not prove himself to be any more capable of leading this nation in a positive direction. What will happen before November? The GOP will bring out all of the stuff that the MSM suppressed during the primary season & BO will lose.

The only thing needed is a cohesive voting plan for Americans who are not far left or far right; the end of two-party reign. Now that would be real change.

When he was asked to be specific about his great ideas , he said that he didn't have to be. Nice to be mentioned by Bush's brain, no, Craig? I think turd blossom was a perfect moniker for that a-hole. Every word is just one more fart.

Well the republicans have done a bang up job of taking care of the economy -

    http://www.nytimes.com/reuters/business/business-markets-stocks.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

"What we have here is a market that is very nervous," said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Avalon Partners in New York.

"You have slower economic activity and you have inflation. I think we are in the midst of a small dose of stagflation, where the economy is limping along with higher inflation."

And we thought it couldn't get worse under Bernanke. McCain got it wrong saying that Obama sounds like he's running for Carter's second term - if he continues Bush's economic programs - and that's exactly what he's advocating isn't it - it's he who's running for Carter's second term - and Bush's 3rd at the same time. And this is who we are considering voting for? Please, think again.

I've been a lifer Democratic so I'm no super fan of McCain, but I know the dirty politics of Count Axelrod and Camp Obama only too well after witnessing their nuclear attacks on the Clintons. As far as McCain getting some things wrong--have you counted the times Obama has been wrong in the last year? I have. He has no expertise on the economy, either.

Right now, I have no preference between Obama & McCain, but in order to make a choice, one of them will have to earn that vote. To date, neither comes close.

Just wondering---have you by any chance read Sen. Obama's "economy" speech given yesterday?

If so, what measures, if any, were proposed that will actually assist homeowner's facing imminent foreclosure--or those with maxed out credit cards---as well as diminishing home values--not to mention the cost of putting gas in your vehicle to get to work each day--or the escalating food costs to feed
your family or the ever increasing energy costs to heat, light & air condition your home?

  125. Patsi and others.....

I feel you. I can have much more examples of how the media is trashing specifics.

Indeed not only in politics but also very deliberately in music. I was a deejay for years, financing my studies, I know that part as well.
Certain music was not allowed to be played. Madonna was non existent at most of Fl radiostations eventhough her career surged. Then again Mariah and Whitney were all that. This is still happening at the moment, as we speak....... How is it possible that a song is sold 1 million times but cannot get airplay on a station? Because deejays deny it the airplay...the reasoning behind it? MONEY and POWER...

Madonna and the child adoption, caused all media headlines. CNN called it an outrage and had it as a headline for weeks...Practically dospatching two journlists to Malawi. Did anyone notice or report that the case was finalized two weeks ago? Madonna was given the green light and the little boy is now officially adopted. Did CNN report this????

This crosses over to each and every discipline in the USA today. Be it politics, be it music, be it TV...be it ANYTHING. The media dictates and the people follow.....

The good thing is....People are waking up! Really. Someone said the other day that: if one thing was learned during this primary is that people have become more knowledgeable...They simply turn off the TV or the radio and find their own sources.

And that is something the big execs know. They are losing grip and they are clinging to what was...in a way that you cannot imagine...

Hmmmm, I am going too far probably....LOL :))
    Anyway.....

  133. I don't know if CHAMP is still here, but I would like do dispute his statement (and what seems to be CW) that we went into Iraq because of Israel.
In testimony before Congress, in response to a question from Jesse Jackson Jr, and after the third attempt to get an answer, Paul Wolfowitz finally stated that we had to go into Iraq in order to get our bases out of Saudi Arabia.
This entire immoral and unfortunate invasion can be laid at the door of George HW Bush who did not properly instruct our representative in Baghdad before the invasion of Kuwait, who encouraged the Kurds and the southern Shia to rise up afterwards, and who accepted the responsibility of patrolling the No-Fly zones. The presence of an American Air Base in Saudi Arabia was the proximate cause of the Al Qaeda attacks, including 9/11. I believe wholeheartedly that we invaded Iraq at the behest of the Saudis who balked at us removing our military from Saudi Arabia so long as Saddam remained in power.

And, in fact, the folk hero of the hour, Sen Obama, through his principal foreign policy adviser has said that the speed with which troops would be pulled out would depend on the situation that obtains when he takes office and consults with the military men on the ground.

  140. Coreen, I read the plan for homeowners in imminent danger of losing their homes - it sounds like it could help - I question whether congress would pass it, but it sounds like it could provide some relief if it did pass. Some of the underlying assumptions don't ring tru, though - for instance the assertion that mostly the rich get to take the home mortgage deduction because they are the ones who itemize, while that sounds like it would be true, above an income of $50,000, 58% and up itemize, and just under 18% of those making less than $50,000 itemize, probably because of the mortgage deduction since it is the single largest deduction most tax filers can take advantage of.

  149. Yes, Pogo, there is no correction available today for
the economic problems facing so many, other than
those who can meet the bankruptcy protection criteria.

Much of the foreclosure dilemma stems from refinancing when homeowners transfered their unsecured debt (primarily credit card debt) to secured debt--resulting in the potential of loss of their home.

Not to mention that many of these people are in mortgages that require a monthly payment that exceeds 50% of their take home pay--doesn't leave much for the rest of daily living.

If I were a cynic, I could say I thought Obama & for that matter McCain both claim to be able to forge an alliance across the aisle, but none of them have done anything to address the foreclosure crisis & the potential credit card debt problem lurking. Lots of hand wringing & oh my's but little actual answers--oh, but Bear, Stearns was bailed out in a nano-second!

Off to the office, take care.

One thing probably too late for your current clients is to change the current bankruptcy law to put housing loans in front of credit card debt and to allow judges to restructure mortgages to either add on at the end of the loan or other possibilities.

Thanks to Joe Biden and his ties to the usuary industry and other spineless Democrats who added to the problems of working class Americans....but what the hell who needs 'em.

It may be even worse than that. Even the people that are experts in very specifc fields have a very narrow focus. So we end up with very few people able to look at the broader picture and make sense of it.

That is why I worry about Obamania, I get the sense that many of his most ardent supporters are more enamored with his style rather than substance. Since he is still undefined in most voters minds the republican opportunity is to frame him as an exceptionally liberal politician, outside of the mainstream. If that works, and I think that there is a very good chance that it will, it does not bode well for his chances in November regardless of the condition of the economy.

  210. I thought I'd chime in with a different perspective. I'm a military mom; my only son is currently on his second tour in Iraq. His first tour was quite an eye opener. Some of the things he wrote about in his letters horrified me, and when he came back home I begged him to pursue a new avenue so he wouldn't get sent back.

But like many of the heroes serving there today, he told me his country needed him, and he would do all that is asked until they can ask no more. He will be voting this year through an absentee ballot, and he's voting Obama for one simple reason: through his firsthand experience in Iraq, he knows Americans can't afford another President who will wage unneeded wars. Many of his fellow soldiers feel the same. For them, their vote could be the difference between coming home to their families, or fighting for their lives in a country that does not want them nor need them.

I ask you to please reconsider. McCain has already aligned himself closely with the policies of the Bush administration, and he's made it clear that he wants a lengthy US military commitment to Iraq. As tensions in the region rise, I fear that a McCain presidency would not only mean my son will be sent on a third and fourth tour to Iraq, but that we'll also have a very real danger of falling into another unneeded conflict with Iran before his term is over.

The Executive branch can't do very much without the Legislative branch, all the congress has to do, is deny any more war funding, and deny the Pentagon any more "black bag" money. Let the "mercs" look after themselves, that's what they're best at.......

one of my best friends is a 76 yr old woman who loves Obama..... I've tried hard not to let that fact get in the way of our friendship..... while driving back from a book club meeting recently, she told me emphatically she "knows" Obama will make a great president..... this is a woman who can't stand "Jesus freaks"..... and we've had many conversations about the fact that they don't really "know" what people experience when they're dead..... I couldn't let that pass and said to her..... "please explain to me what's the difference between what you just said and someone who claims to "know" that Jesus is our one and only savior"..... she got really pissed off at me for even suggesting that the 2 things were related..... l value this friendship so I let it drop....

but the fact that I see no difference between the 2 stances and so many cannot..... scares the hell out of me.....

  217. The most thoughtful analysis on oil (actually gas) prices I've heard identified 3 major factors that have drive the price of crude futures up. The factors the guys mentioned were (1) nervousness among speculators over the continued supply of oil driven by (2) in the prospect of instability in the middle east (particularly tied to US intentions of pulling out in Iraq and doing something stupid in Iran) and (3) the weak dollar making oil more expensive when purchased with US dollars. And of course they mentioned in passing that big oil is enjoying record and near record profits despite the increase in the price of the raw material (crude). They touched on supply/demand pressures, but dismissed that as a major force in the price of gasoline here.

Colleen. My nephew (a marine) said the same thing. He has had one tour in Iraq and is heading off to Afghanistan in August.

Nobody is going to pull us out of Iraq precipitously. However, with McCain we might never get out there. And anyone who thinks having US troops in Iraq is the same as having them in Korea doesn’t know what they are talking about. The Iraqi government will only take on responsibility once they believe the US really has an end date. I've always felt the policy differences on getting out of (as opposed to getting into) Iraq between HRC and BO were minimal. But I think the policy differences between HRC & BO on the one hand and McCain on the other are huge."

That tells you a great deal about a person, and from what I've seen of his reaction, I think he is a fudger and a light-weight who will only make a decision or commitment when he is boxed in and has to jump in whatever way will give him an easy out.

These young people, and the other Obamaniacs really believe him, and I can't figure out why. He has made no new promises or said anything interesting - there is not one shred of empirical information to show he will be successful in his promises.

Old people get old by hearing the same promises year after year after year. The young people screaming about him will get old, too.

  282. Pro-Choice Democrats and John McCain

Would McCain stock the Supreme Court with foes of Roe v. Wade? The 1973 decision guarantees a right to abortion.

The answer is unclear but probably "no." While McCain has positioned himself as "pro-life" during this campaign, his statements over the years show considerable latitude on the issue......

...Obama is no doubt pro-choice, but on the issue, he's hardly been a profile in courage. As an Illinois state senator, he famously voted "present" on anti-choice legislation. Voting "present" is a tactic used to express disapproval without actually taking a stand,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,... Voting present doesn't provide a platform from which to show leadership and say with conviction that we support a woman's right to choose,,,,,,,,,,,." ...they need not obsess on what a McCain presidency would do to Roe. That is one war McCain is unlikely to wage."

  285. If I could ask a question, what would it take to overthrow Roe vs Wade? How would that be done? I'm just wondering how hard it would be to do and how long it would take.

Posted by: lizbeth Author Profile Page | June 10, 2008 8:41 PM

  286. How would it get before the court though? There has to be a case, right?

Posted by: lizbeth Author Profile Page | June 10, 2008 8:49 PM

  287. lizbeth

A case would have to move up through the courts from local to appellate to state supreme to Supreme Court. Then the Supremes would have to grant a Writ of Certiori for it to even be heard. Once heard then they would mull it over for several months and then finally render a decision.

It can take years unless it gets fast tracked in some way.

  291. Lizbeth,
It is mostly too late. There are enough conservative justices on the bench to over Roe v wade anytime they want too. It is going to be very difficult for a Mc Cain presidency to add any more far right justices to SC as long as the Democrats hold the power in the senate.

and when visiting Memri, please review the other wonderful clips like the one from Galloway and what European Liberals hope Obama will do. Quite scary. No wonder Obama is looking now for a VP to improve his Foreign policy experiance. Funny, how just last month he declared his is expert enough...LOL

Maybe several months from now Craig, you'll steer clear from Axelrod.

Jack is right Lizbeth. And perhaps the best solution would be to kick abortion back to the States while protecting the right of those too poor to visit States supplying abortion. As long as the 14th clearly does not list fetuses as "persons" the government will likely not be able to ever ban abortion unless a majority vote for an Admendement which is unlikely.

What a wonderful windfall tax effort on the part of the Democrats...LOL A provision to sue OPEC for being a monopoly. Yep, let's raise prices even more. And the Democrats calimed their new bill would not repeat the mistake of the eighties.....sure

And a mandate to avoid penalties by investing in alternative energy. Corn? LOL Yep, solve the energy problem with another tax and absurd law suits. Meanwhile the bill suggest avoiding tax by investing in refineries. Say what? Oh, the refineries the Democrats have thwarted for two decades. How about shale oil investment...nope. No, it wasn't simply a windfall tax Obama and McCain avoided voting for, it was more of the partisan crap that is coming our way via Obama/Pelosi.

Split the ticket and save the Democrats.....

  306. Julie -- If you drove through Western Kansas (which Truman Capote wisely labeled a desolate tumbleweed tundra) you were traveling through my home area. Actually, my area is flatter and more desolate, out by Dodge City. You were no doubt travling I-70, through Hays and Salina. I love that long flat drive. You can just point the car and go....horizon is forever. That's the drive where my mother and I once saw five tornados dancing along the horizon. One of the most spectacular things I've ever seen.

It looks as if the wheat crop is going to be a good one.

    http://cjonline.com/stories/061008/bre_goldwheat.shtml

I believe the corn crop in Iowa may be suffering from all the rain. My wife on her drive back from Omaha said the fields looked like lakes in southwestern Iowa and Northwest MO. From what I've seen all of Iowa is having too much rain. It is too late to replant. If things dry up in the next week or so they might be able to replant with soybeans But after that it is wait till next year.
