  3. wow, unity did not last long in these parts.

Viv, i know that's one of our 7 Acceptable Insults, but it's a progressive list and that one is dead last

Encouraging, tho, that you say "won't address him again" -- Good choice for others too, if that's the sort of stuff they're inclined to write

Not a pleasant way to start a thread, at all

  4. Hillary was wonderful and did look beautiful. Most commentators approved of her performance however she is being watched so closely that it is ridiculous. Heaven help her if she slips in any way. Bill of course is taking an enormous beating. The Clintons just can not win with the media.

  5. " I doubt this pilot will be picked up as a series. "

    ROFL, Marcia.

"Viv, an appropriate use of Lardo's rule #7"

I agree -- this is the perfect way to start the thread.

  6. Oh MY GOD! A woman on C-Span is saying that the Clintons are now controlling Obama. She says that they are making him keep "people of color" out of his televised shots, blaming the Muslim mess on the Clintons, and also saying his move to the right is controlled by Bill and Hill.

    Un-freaking-believably stupid.

Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | June 28, 2008 7:28 AM

  7. I bet you feel better, Viv, rage helps kick in the endorphins. Your comment helped me get off to a smiling start this morning.

Craig, if you think unity is here...

There was one class act speaking yesterday afternoon.

When the campaigns started most people I know thought that a person of color or a woman could be quite electable this year. And, if either was nominated, it would be because of merit and vision and intellect and reestablishment of American ideals as the forefront of his or her candidacy.

    One candidate prevailed.

He says that Mrs Clinton did it in heels and that she proved, for his daughters, that they can aspire to anything. Yes, they can, they can aspire. But don't let them overreach.

And, they should know, Mrs Clinton can do it in any kind of shoes she damn well wants to wear.

I think if I hear one more orchestrated 'spontaneous' chant at an Obama campaign event, I'm going to puke.

And I will be sending Mrs Clinton some more dollars because she was doing my work and doing it in the name of the women and girls in my family. I owe her.

  10. Jamie and others, a huge and fascinating news development in the world of birds. New genetic research tools will change what we thought we knew about bird classification, and will force a re-ordering of most standard field guides. It's fascinating stuff.

This story is datelined Friday, but only ran in my paper this morning. It was buried on page A2:

  12. Thanks for the url, Lard.

I remember shortly after arriving in Panama, my host said, "Wow, did you see that parrot fly by?" Of course, I didn't. I don't believe I've ever identified a parrot (or a falcon) in flight.

But, I'm not at all surprised that that two species may be closely related.

I suspect most field guides will continue basing identification on 'converged' characteristics simply because it makes life easier for birders.

  15. Morning Craig-
Thanks for the cross post-, because I could not post my photos here. t was fun to be a trailspotter again-

Patsi I hear the woman on c-span this morning calling Barack a sell out- and criticized the lack of blacks- I think I saw maybe 4 or so at the event who were not with the press/campaign. She has said that at previous NH events there were always some- I can't stress this was very rural, western NH- the audience make up would have been considerably different in one of the cities.

What I noticed, perhaps in my two hour wait for them to go on, was how diverse the ages of attendees was- lots of young, but many seniors who sat beaming throughout when Hillary and Barack were together.

Also, yesterday was the first time I had ever gotten to meet Hillary. I did not have any earlier opportunity due to the nature of her events and the campaign plan- though I got to tell her about a good friend of mine (and strong supporter of hers who had been a driver for her in 91-2) who was recovering from an accident and how much he appreciated her phone call.

It was also interesting how the very few critics with signs were zeroed in on my the press.

  16. "who had been a driver for her in 91-2) who was recovering from an accident and how much he appreciated her phone call."

  19. Here's a funny Gawker post from yesterday about how to survive in the rough-and-tumble world of blogs and commenting. Lots of obscure, insidery references that don't matter -- but the gist shines through and may be helpful to the daily scrum here. It's a funny set of rules. Some samples:

    1. Know the sharing/oversharing divide
    2. Don't write like an asshole
    3. Manage your narcissism
    4. Have a sense of humor

Back to the grill. It has helped me develop a really bad habit. Because the grill's handle is designed perfectly, I don't bother looking when I grab for it. I can just imagine what's going to happen one of these days. I'm going to have to retrain myself.

  21. Why Veeps Now Matter

.....When Harry Truman was summoned there on April 12, 1945, and told of Franklin Roosevelt's death, he did not know that the president was out of the city — he had met with him just twice in his 82 days as vice president. After Truman's first Cabinet meeting, Secretary of War Henry Stimson took him aside and told him the government was developing a weapon of enormous power. This was the first time Truman had heard about the atomic bomb.....

  22. Good morning

I was amazed how we all danced around the gun discussion without it turning into a flame war. That is a rare occurence on the net. I think it was because most of the people in the discussion replyed with respect for each others opinion.
I think last night we had a perfect example of how not to argue your point if your goal is to pursuade. I had more than a few issues with Viv's immigration post last night and was going to point some of them out. But, Hwsbn(He who shall be nameless) so poisoned the discussion that it wasn't worth my time and effort to comment.

  26. Emulating the Man From Hope

"Republicans with a predilection for wishful thinking had been supposing that John McCain's opponent in November was going to be another Jimmy Carter or Mike Dukakis. But although Barack Obama might not have been able to get him on the phone this week, the new Messiah of Hope has been doing a passable of emulating the Man from Hope.....

Obama secured the Democratic nomination in part by disavowing the "old politics" of Bill Clinton. But the way he's begun his general election campaign shows that he's convinced that emulating the Man from Hope is the way to win in November."

  29. LL:

Thank you for that bird article link. I hadn't realized there were so many experienced and interested birders "flocked together" on this site. Can't say I'm eager for the new field guides. It's taken me 25 years to learn the ones I'm using. National Geographic is the best, but I'm partial to my original little Golden Guide with my very first field notes in all the margins.

"Working the new results into the guidebooks that birders use could take years, but many experts said some change is likely. Such books normally take their cue from the American Ornithologists' Union, which releases an updated checklist of bird species each year."

    No green pastures after Bush

George W. Bush will go back to Crawford, Texas at the end of the year. Will anyone notice? Does anyone care any more? His wings scorched from Iraq to Guantanamo, Bush already seems to be yesterday's story... The reason we should take more notice of his departure is not what his absence will make possible, but what will remain absolutely the same. Consider four examples.......

  34. Good morning Lardass

It's official, I'm a research geek. Reading along enjoying all the political nattering and backbiting and then you show up with parrots and it's zippity, lickity split over to the link merrily reading away wondering what this is going to do to Darwin's finches and having to get through several paragraphs to find:

"Using birds to study evolution is nothing new—the diversity of Galapagos finches helped fuel Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. But many details of avian evolution remained a mystery, in part because the animals' light, hollow bones left few fossils."

Thanks for the diversion, I'll have to do something with it.

  35. The regulars on my deck feeders (in order of numbers attending) are: sparrows, cardinals, doves, bluejays, chickadees and their pals the titmouse (titmice? titmouses?) -- a couple of woodpeckers who sometimes move over from the huge tree next to the house, and once in a while, some grackles and finches.

The bluejays are definitely the Republican hardliners of the feeders....bullies. But by damn those doves, when they get PO'd, can fluff up and put on quite a show. The chickadees are fabulous....they just sneak right in under the bluejays beaks and snag a bite or two.

And, of course, there are the squirrels....

In a way, I love the little bunch of unassuming sparrows the most.

I saw a brief CNN report on the unity event and their entire focus was..."Where was Bill Clinton?" Their answer was a "trip to Europe." Never mentioning, the birthday party for Nelson Mandela. The whole story was another shot at the Clintons.

I think the main stream media in general is embarrassed about their role in electing and protecting Shrub and the goopers and is now trying to rehab their image by electing the first black president.
All that drivel about the impact in the "ghetto" after Obama was named the candidate coming from the likes of Howard the duck Fineman and that gooper trophy spouse Howie "the ho" Kurtz what a lot of hooey.

I have a LOT of cardinals and the ever combative blue jays too. I really love the song birds - they're really noisy out here. And we have plenty of them. But unless I'm missing some of them, we don't have nearly the assortment you have. But I do really enjoy the little sparrows a lot too, when I'm out and about.

  41. Patsi, long time ago I was sitting out on the back deck and a tufted titmouse flies over to the railing, perches there for a few seconds, then hops down to my knee. He kind of looked around, swiveling his head, trying to get his bearings. Then he looked up into my face, and completely lost his composure.

  43. Don't forget the ruby-throated hummingbirds at this time of year. It's been sad to see their numbers dwindling year-after-year. Only four or five years ago, I could have fifty or more birds at once battling for feeder space. Now it's mostly one-at-a-time. When two show up and stage a fight, as happened last evening, it's a show. I could make a lame blogging or political analogy out of that image, but I won't.

  44. "a tufted titmouse flies over to the railing, perches there for a few seconds, then hops down to my knee. "

Wow! Flatus -- how grand was that!

Long ago, when I had a huge yard, many more feeders than now and many more birds, including some indigo buntings that stayed in the trees a bit away from the feeders until the coast was clear, I started watching the chicakdees and noticed the little tufted headed biirds that seemed to be at the feeders with them. I was talking on the phone to my old college roommate and we tried to figure out what they were. Finally she looked it up in a bird book and called me back:

"The titmouse, often found in the company of chickadees."

For some reason, that wording, given our conversation, just cracked both of us up. Even now, if she and I are talking about an old college friend who is missing in action, one of us will say, "I think he is often found in the company of chickadees."

Would it help Social Security's financing problems? Mr. Obama has no idea. One of his senior economic advisers admitted to me that no one on the campaign has run any detailed models or performed any rigorous analysis. When one proposes an enormous tax increase, shouldn't there at least be a spreadsheet somewhere?"

Then just as she was engrossed in her multiple concessions, his campaign started using the same political shape-shifting that Obama had decried in the Clintons. He attacked the Supreme Court’s anti-death-penalty ruling so that he wouldn’t look soft on sexual assailants the way that Michael Dukakis did. He welcomed the court’s anti-gun-control ruling so that he wouldn’t lose the hunters’ vote like Al Gore. Public-campaign financing is for losers"

Also, growing up in Missouri I took robins for granted. They were all over the yard most of the year except the couple of months of winter. Now that I'm down here in Florida, I love it when the robins pop onto the scene in the winter. It reminds me of home.

  53. Speaking of birds.....a friend of mine worked for Johnny Cash back when Johnny had that television show in the late 60s, early 70s. He invited the guy to come to his home in Jamaica...and one day Johnny grabbed the guy by the arm (while he was having coffee with June in the kitchen) and said, "Quick, come out to the patio." They went out, Johnny motioned for him to sit down and be quiet. The guy said all of a sudden, dozens of the most astonishingly beautiful tropical birds flew in and nested in the trees. Johnny told him they always came at the same time every day, and that he tried to make sure he was waiting for them.

I think a fascination with birds of all types is universal....

    http://www.now.org/issues/media/hall_of_shame/

It's great. Other organizations must have them too. I'm going on a hunt.

On the bee/bird etc. The single biggest factor is human development and failure to leave any habitat in tact. Only now are local vineyards (no bee food and which have replaced vast numbers of orchards here ) bginning to leave corners and borders with plants that hhelp bees and birds survive.

  65. Will The Media Be Fair To "Just Say No Deal" and Puma Voices This Weekend

"Organizations such as the LA Times and Newsweek have demonstrated a particular lack of fair reporting during this campaign cycle.

Newsweek and the LA Times have also made a concerted effort over the past two weeks to manipulate polling data by releasing outlier polls showing Obama with a double digit lead. The polls, which have been scrutinized by the legitimate polling organizations and a few fair media organizations, have undermined the data produced by the established and respected polling organizations such as Rasmussen and Gallup. Newsweek of course was quick to respond the questions of legitimacy by have one of their own columnists analyze the polling data and conclude that their poll was fair and accurate."

  67. Patsi:

Ruby-throated hummingbirds are the only hummingbird in the U.S. east of the Mississippi River. They nest during our summer, then fly south to the southern hemisphere summer. In South America, their habitat is being systematically and rapidly destroyed by deforestation and development. Fewer and fewer hummingbirds return here each year. In our lifetimes, we could possibly see the extinction of hummingbirds in the eastern U.S.

I don't know if there's a relationship to the bee colony collapse. Seems to me if that was the primary issue for hummingbirds, they would be mobbing the human-supplied nectar feeders. Everybody in my neighborhood puts up feeders...they birds just aren't there.

  68. As to "my hummingbirds," I'm convinced the same individuals show up in successive years - the ones who make it back, that is. Like clockwork on April 1 every year, there is a little red-throated fellow (males return ahead of females) peering at me through the window - even if I haven't yet put up my feeder. This year, Leap Year got him here a day early while causing me to be a day late. Sure enough, the little hoverer was there, seemingly saying, "Hey Lady, get them vittles out here now!"

  69. It's All About Obama

"Many candidates have measured the Oval Office drapes prematurely. But Barack Obama is the first to redesign the presidential seal before the election.

The candidate's self-centeredness has been on display before.

Mr. Obama's alpha-male attitude was evident even as he stumbled towards and over the primary finish line.

Mr. McCain will be helped if he uses Mr. Obama's actions to paint his opponent as someone driven by an all-powerful instinct to look out only for himself. In a contest over who is willing to put principle above personal ambition and self-interest, John McCain, a war hero and a former POW, wins hands down. "

  77. Now is the time!

Obama needs to re-define McCain and/or build a substantial electoral-polling lead before the Conventions. After that, McCain has access to Federal funds with only 2 months to the finals. O's financial advantage then becomes less domineering because the focus will be on obtainable swing states and we already know that outspending an opponent 2-3-4-to 1 is not conclusive.

If the presumed critical swing-states leads for Obama is less than 10 points, we'll have a horse race (because of the un-measurable Bradley effect). Above 10, the McCain is toast!

    Posted by: Nick | June 28, 2008 1:53 PM

If this is true, then my fond feelings for President Clinton diminishes a bit. He's a statesman and the former leader of the free world and this suggests he is acting like a spoiled child who has had his Tonka truck taken away from him. Children who behave this way often get a "time out" until they get it back together.

I understand the President's disappointment in the result of the nomination contest, but to behave so childishly diminishes him. Frankly, Bill's temperament has been particularly out of control during these recent months. We all lose our cool time to time (I do a lot). But Mr. Clinton needs to act like an adult. If he continues to act like a child, many people, including a lot of his admirers, will have a harder time taking him seriously.

I just hope this is not a true story.

  82. Nick,

It is interesting in the Telegraph article that you linked that the one and only actual source named was right wing Joe Klein who had "heard from others". So it is at least third or fourth hand from someone who has been writing negatively about the Clintons for years often using mind reading as the means to determine what they are really thinking. For this the Times pay him a rediculously amount of money to be as nasty as possible.

But aside from that, what if he did say that in private to somebody. Good Lord, this cat trashed his presidency, had his campaign call him a racist AND started the whole damned process by asking Atlantic magazine to investigate his post-presidency sex life.

For those of us who believe there is a sharp dividing line between the parties and the Republican views are unacceptable, this is a disappointment.

We do have a comfort zone with Obama though, small as it is: Health care, social security. And I think the judges he will appoint, both to the Supreme Court and our federal courts, will be far better and less right-wing than those McCain would appoint.

I don't see his candidacy as the poster child for change he's promised, but perhaps change comes in increments. And, a little bit of change is better than the status quo and regression another Republican president would bring."

Obama writes, in "Audacity of Hope":

"I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripe project their own views. As such I am bound to disappoint some, if not all of them."

I guess what I'm going through is something we can maybe call the "blank screen effect." I'm still an Obama supporter, but what pains me is that I sort of believed that he could be a reformer. Indeed, I probably projected quite a few political views onto Mr. Obama that he doesn't represent. I still have hope that he can turn things around, but his recent positions on the death penalty for child rape, the handgun decision, NAFTA, the telecom immunity, and whatnot, have left me feeling very sad.

Does he offer change from Bush? Absolutely. But that's not enough. For all the criticisms he had of Clinton's "third way" politics, it looks like we might be getting another compromised, "centrist" democrat in the white house.

He needs to stop his rapid move to the center soon, or else, though he may have my vote, he will have zapped me of all enthusiasm and hope.

It's a point I hear and understand Patsi. I couldn't just forgive and forget either, but Bill Clinton is a super politician and generally can handle these things better than the average Joe or Josette. I would expect him to feel some stings but then get out there and work for the party he helped to rebuild after YEARS of losses. No real Democrats want the Repugs to be in power again for another 4 years. We are at a defining threshold in our country. Whoever is the next President will definitely nominate one, maybe 2 or 3 candidates for the Supreme Court. What scares me is that it is the liberals that are most vulnerable: either old and ailing or (in the case of Ruth Bader Ginsberg) simply want to stop. The Republicans like to bitch and moan about "activist judiciaries" but the Repug members of the Supremes are as ideologically activist as much or more than their liberal colleagues. Bill knows this! In politics poo poo occurs. It's time for him to get up and be the fine leader he is. I have no doubt that he will ! Every time Bill tried to make known how he felt about the way Obama was trashing him, the media called him hysterical and out of control. They even made reference to a llame idea that his bypass surgery had affected him mentally. They had whole articles on how heart surgery can affect your mind, referring to Bill.

The accusations got so bad whenever Bill complained or spoke out against the injustice, they called him, in so many words, an over-the-hill, racist, out of touch maniac. Even speculating that he had lost his political touch. How could he fight all of MSNBC and CNN, NBC, pundits, written publications, the biosphere crowd, and his fellow politicians (so called friends)?

I Think California has more Solar than any other state. Not sure though ? Could be wrong. Maggisd would know.

There's lots of wind turbines in Tehachapi., one place I remember for sure.

But I don't think they really know where where to get water.
The government there is usually broke.

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | June 28, 2008 7:13 PM

It has wind and solar. It doesn't have enough and the water situation is completely insane. One of the most fertile growing regions in the world has been turned into wall to wall cement to house the millions who live there. The state that used to measure it's fruit groves in miles now imports most from Chile.

    Talk about stupid.

You're right. It is wall to wall cement.
    And of course, over crowded.
The land got so valuable that they built on every inch possible.
    And there went the groves.
The state got greedy, I guess.

  157. Chloe: Came in at the tail end here ... after reading all the lovely stuff about birds.
To tell you the truth, I don't know for certain that California has more solar than any other state ... but we make the claim and it's credible. My local power company has some huge solar arrays out in the desert, as well as wind turbines and a nuclear plant. And, of course, we've been putting in solar roofs since the 70s at least. In the years since the Enron debacle, it is claimed that we have kept our electrical usage completely stable. And the Governator claims we have the lowest per capita carbon footprint in the country. Who knows if that's really true.
    Water...whole 'nother story.
And, the only reason we are perpetually broke is the initiative process. People vote to make all sorts of things part of the state Constitution (such as needing a 2/3 majority to pass a budget) and it ties the hands of the legislators.

  160. Jamie: We do import some fruit from Chile, and some from as far away as New Zealand, and a lot still from Mexico, as ever.
But we still have an abundance of fruit from California, along with lots of Washington apples -- in season. Vegetables, of course, are mostly local no matter the time of the year, but fruit has always been seasonal, and it still is. Despite the suburban sprawl along the major corridors, there are still lovely rural pockets, even in Southern California.

  161. Maggi,
I know they have more rules than any state I've ever seen. I lived their most of my life. I love it there, but it's too expensive to live - mainly BECAUSE of all the rules. Stringent smog control, unbelievable building codes, more restrictions and requirements than one can believe.

Taxes, including property tax is more expensive than many other places. Property indescribably expensive. Insurance, permits, utilities so expensive, it's hard to believe. You don't realize until you live somewhere else.

Great, great state. But it definitely costs you to live there.

Posted by: chloe Author Profile Page | June 28, 2008 7:35 PM

  162. Maggi,
We get a lot of fruit from California here in Texas. All the good produce comes from there. And it's the best there is, besides maybe Florida (and probably a couple I'm missing).

We usually feel like California ships more of their fruit here than they keep in state. When we moved here, we had a better selection of California produce than we had when we lived there.

And the avocados, there's no place else that grows them like yours.

But if he lacks a valid US birth certificate, and therefore cannot prove that he is an American citizen, then he would have good reason to put up a smokescreen and stonewall as long as he can. He would have good reason to try and slide by, as he may have done in the past, by putting up something that would pass as legitimate to the untrained and uninformed, as the one posted by the left-wing Daily Kos blog did, and which much of the media accepted as such, on his say-so."

I worked on a crew one summer, while in my 40s. (I'd been caught up in a corporate shakeup, and with two kids and no safety net -- I HAD to find something temporary, but with good wages....FAST.)

Long story which I won't bore you with, but suffice it to say that for three days I knew I was on trial. The crew was all-black, by the way. And I doubt it all would have ended up as good with an all-white crew. Maybe because our little crew knew we were at the low end of that totem pole.

Once they knew that I, too, needed the good wage the company paid, and would work as hard as they did, asking no favors, despite being a friend of the owner -- I was welcomed into the "family." The day I knew everything was going to be fine was day-four, when one of the men asked me if I wanted to bring my sack lunch and join them.

From then on, I was treated as an equal, never disrespected, and yes, ended up with some friends that were around from time to time for the next several years, until I moved to the farm.

    At any rate -- Anon -- you're a champ.

"The laws governing whether or not a child born outside of the United States acquires U.S. citizenship from his or her parents have changed several times. The law that was in effect on the date of the child's birth determines whether he or she acquired U.S. citizenship from a parent or grandparent

    December 24, 1952 to November 13, 1986

If only one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of your birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for at least ten years, at least five of which had to be after the age of 16. There are no conditions placed on retaining this type of citizenship."

"Geraghty stated that "If Obama were born outside the United States, one could argue that he would not meet the legal definition of natural-born citizen -- because U.S. law at the time of his birth required his natural-born parent (his mother) to have resided in the United States for '10 years, at least [f]ive of which had to be after the age of 16.'"

He then points out that Ann Dunham, Obama's mother, was 18 when Obama was born "so she wouldn't have met the requirement of five years after the age of 16."

According to FindLaw.com, cited by Geraghty, the requirements that were in force from Dec. 24, 1952 to Nov. 13, 1986, encompassing the time of Obama's birth, state, "If only one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of your birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for at least 10 years, at least five of which had to be after the age of 16."

When I was a kid, my dad had a house with an old avocado tree in it. It was absolutely huge. I've never seen another one that large.

I know there are still large farming areas, but I can remember when the addresses in the San Fernando Valley were RFD, when the whole of the central valley was miles and miles of nut trees, raisins, and cotton.

As much as I love the state (If my son didn't need me here I would go back in a second), I hate what it has become.

  237. More tales of "birds gotta fly..."

Last year, eastern phoebes had built their nest on the bend of a downspout near my front door. I came out one morning to find a nestling suspended upside down and dangling by one leg 12 feet from the ground. It was tangled in fishing line its parent had used in building the nest. Normally, you are supposed to leave "struggling" fledglings alone - they usually figure it out which is nature's way.

But this was not normal or natural, so I intervened. Hard to help something wild that doesn't know you're trying to help it. I was afraid I'd kill it from fright in the process. Delicate "surgery" was required, and it was a great relief when I saw the little bird hop away into the underbrush with a little prayer from me that this one would make it.

What in the world makes you thing that it's the same party that he spent all his years working for???

I sure as hell don't think it is.

    Posted by: Flatus | June 28, 2008 4:26 PM

Hi Flatus, The party seems to keep on changing over its history. Frankly, if I were able to wave my magic wand, the party would go back to the fiscal activism of FDR. The party that I respect the most is the DFL - Democrat Farmer Labor party of Minnesota best historically personified by the diligent work former U.S. Senator and Vice-President Hubert Humphrey. He was a true humanitarian. I also respect the honesty and human rights record of President Jimmy Carter though in many ways he was quite ineffectual.

Culturally I am a Democrat. My Grandfather (who died at age 63 in 1965) was a life long Democrat (my Mom just told me that recently). Mom, my sister and I are Democrats. My redneck brother and my goofy Dad are Repugs. So voting against the Dems is not something I do easily. I am encouraged though by the work Hillary and Barack are doing together. Part of my attitude is fear of what happens if the Dems lose, the other part is hope of what can be accomplished with the Dems in power.

I still want Hillary to be VP running mate !! The party and our country needs her! For many of us who carry the sting in our hearts over the DNC actions vis-a-vis Florida and Michigan, and the manner in which Hillary was attacked by the media and even some colleagues, forgiving and forgetting isn't easy. But for our future I do believe it's necessary. And to the Barack Obama for President organization, I still say Hillary should be the running mate.

P.S. Having re-read Barack Obama's 2004 Democratic National Convention keynote speech, I remember why I admired him so back then.

    http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/convention2004/barackobama2004dnc.htm

"The pundits, the pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I’ve got news for them, too. We worship an "awesome God" in the Blue States, and we don’t like federal agents poking around in our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and yes, we’ve got some gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and there are patriots who supported the war in Iraq. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America.

In the end -- In the end -- In the end, that’s what this election is about. Do we participate in a politics of cynicism or do we participate in a politics of hope?"

Posted by: EuroTom Author Profile Page | June 29, 2008 12:48 AM

  258. I disagree about having a president and the house and congress all in the same party. The same applies to the democrats as the republicans. Absolute power promotes evil..
You know what scares me, the rich liberals in the legislature and congress, their wealth insulates them from the consequences of their actions.
BHo is more of a power seeker than Bush. Look what we got with a republican threesome..
We must have checks and balances. Three way is not the answer.

    Posted by: julie young 73 | June 28, 2008 3:45 PM

The Repugs will just continue to obstruct and work for their monied interests and if they are also in power. Having one party controlling the House, Senate and Presidency can reduce "gridlock" so real change can begin. But remember, within each party there are those who are more conservative or more liberal than the majority of their colleagues. Often their votes are done with a look on home district practicality as much as the goals of the President and/or national party.

  259. Hi Patsi--about birds. . .

I just had to respond to your posts about birds. I have always loved animals,
but I never really thought about birds or appreciated them until one afternoon, a couple of years ago, when I found three eggs in an abandoned plant holder hanging on my patio. In the evening, I watched a big, gray bird with iridescent-blue tipped wings, swoop down to sit on the eggs. I walked over and peered into the nest. I was enthralled.

The fat bird sat proudly watching me watch it. Anyway, I did some research and discovered the birds were Morning Doves. I learned that the male and female both share equally in sitting on the eggs and caring for the young. Each morning, one of the adult birds would change shifts with the other who had been on the night shift. After a couple of weeks, two precocious chicks hatched.

Then, they flew out of the nest and on to the ground. Each adult bird stayed with one of the babies and flew around the yard. For a few days, I watched as the four birds flapped from tree to tree and roof top to roof top. I became captivated by my bird interlopers. They became like surprise-entertaining guests. I watched them daily with my binoculars.

l left food out and the whole family of doves continued to fly to my patio for weeks after, to eat and walk around. I had to move from that apartment and I miss my bird buddies who so suddenly touched my life. I wrote a story about this experience beginning with the first day I found the eggs entitled "The Dove Diaries." I now consider myself to be a bird-person.

But with a country that has excellent health care and social security, taxes will remain high...

  262. Oops Craig, now I am counting the number of posts I am making :-) The point on back and forth bickering is one well taken. It doesn't change things, on the contrary, it keeps the cages rattling. My thought is that we're not going to like everyone here, but we can disagree with the poster's position rather than swiping at the poster him or herself. I know that I have been just as guilty so I'm not in a position to be "judgmental". And my viewpoint is also a bit skewed because I particularly admire one of the posters and understand the anger.
I vote for "give and take" without "slash and burn".

SNL was from 1976...had Chevy Chase in a lot of skits...John Belushi in a "bee" skit, many of the others of the old crew.

Carlin was reserved, talking about his wonderment at phrases like "jumbo shrimp", and other dated material...Carlin was about 39 years of age when this aired.

haha! "jet relationship!" In 1996 a group from work flew to San Jose for a conference. My seat happened to be in the middle and my superior was in the window seat. Our plane was six hours late leaving Columbus and I was dead-tired and shortly after take-off I dozed off. Of course when I woke up my stupid head was resting on my boss's shoulder! I was so damned embarrassed ... I had even DROOLED on myself! She just laughed and said "you were so peaceful I didn't dare wake you up!" And no, no, no! That was NOT the start of anything extracurricular!

The only celebrity I ever shared a public conveyance with was John Madden, then of CBS Football Broadcasting, pre-bus days, when he rode Amtrak trains. Helluva nice man!

  266. Patsi - The details to the story about the little blonde lady add to it. Her blonde hair was in two braids that hung over her shoulders so she looked like a kid, and had on bobby sox and some kind of tennis shoe. She was quite sprightly and might even had known the woman she said that about. I got the feeling they had a history of some kind. She almost cackled when she said it.

I think the media is confused - they still hate the Clintons and always will. I firmly -firmly, I tell you - believe it's because the Clinton's are so much smarter than anyone in the media that they run rings around them.Media people are left choking on Bill and Hillary's dust.I don't care where they went to school or what their degrees are or how perfect their grammar is or what books they have read - media people can't make leaps of thought and they can never ponder something until it is fine tuned and can explain exactly what they mean. That's what the Clintons do - they think and they think well and they think deeply.

Part of themedia's problem is they have to fill so much air time, they have to speak fast and without thinking. They also have to beat the other stations. Further, they are not thinking of doing the public a real service; they ae thinking of themselves and their salaries.

If they had the ability to think and ponder and speak their ideas well. they could have a path beaten to their doors because of that ability, but they're in a hurry. I stopped listening to KO's special comments after the first one -it was so badly written. Even with a worthwhile subject, he couldn't line his sentences up un a row. 'Nough rant.

There we 1211 wildfires in CA as of yesterday. There is a lot of haze and the smoke can be annoying. But the heat is gone. Most of these fires were started by lightning - no storms, just lightning.

  267. Barack Obama is a fraud

Posted by: Oregon Democrat | June 29, 2008 4:29 AM

  268. All this Obama unity talk is like an alternative universe, like bizarro world.

Wasn't it just a month ago that Obama surrogates and the media were demonizing the Clintons, muddying up former Bill Clinton, using smears to transform him into a racist?

I see all the familiar Obama representatives, now, on CNN, MSNBC, fake smiles pasted on their faces, praising Bill and Hillary Clinton as great and wonderful leaders. I felt a bit nauseated as I watched the Unity Rally on Friday when Obama talked about how terrific Bill Clinton's presidency had been, how much he needed both Clintons to campaign for him. It was all too much for me. I kept wondering why Obama would want Bill Clinton, the supposed racist, to rally for him?

I understand Bill Clinton's reluctance to give a lofty speech praising a man
whose camp so marginalized and wounded him.

I feel like a person whose best friend just got beaten up and abused, then
those responsible for destroying my friend tell me a month later that they
want my support so they can win the election my pal fought desperately
to secure. I'm not ready to forgive and forget.

I understand why Hillary must "work her heart out" for Obama. It's required of her. It's her way. Her loyalty to the Democratic party is commendable. However, I feel no such dutiful allegiance.

I cannot forgive the DNC, Obama or the media, not now, maybe not ever.
I cannot reward all the Clinton haters by giving them my vote. It's all I have
to voice my distain. But, distain is not the main reason I won't vote for Obama even though I believe it is enough reason.

  269. "I'd be a poor newspaperman indeed if I didn't know what everybody else knows!"

Today I watched John McCain, and the first black president of the United States of America on C-Span speak before the -
"Elected Latino's and Appointed Officials of America". (This is not their real name) ....... Their real name has more words than even they can remember.

John McCain has called out Senator Obama to meet him in 10 town hall meetings ......

    I say bring it on.

Senator McCain has become the "Incredible Shrinking White Guy".

He does not want to appear on stage with this man.
Obama will clean his clock .....
McCain is headed to the dust bin of history.
Into the file that contains :
    Tom DeLay
    Dennis Hastard
    Duke Cunningham
    Right Wing preachers
    Karl Rove
    "The Reagan Revolution"
    Fox News
    Larry Craig

    et al

The world has rolled over, and Senator McCain has become the "Incredible Shrinking White Guy".

    Consider these items :
    BP - British Petroleum
Their records go back to 1861. They report that oil has increased in price for the last 6 years. This has never happened before.

The most expensive object ever built by man is flying over our heads.
    The International Space Station.

Two years ago, a drill ship off the coast of West Africa cost $125,000 a day to contract. Today that rig rents for $ 650,000 a day.

T Boone Pickens is building the world's largest wind farm in the Texas Panhandle. ( He wrote the checks to " Swift Boat" John Kerry.)

Pittsburgh will return as a steel making center. ( $4.75 diesel makes Chinese steel too expensive to ship across the Pacific)

As this reporter watched Senator Obama today in the rope line, after his address.. I was struck by the amount of Secret Service in the shot. You won't see it in the news, but the amount of people now protecting this man is like nothing ever seen before. They watch everybody's hands. A large black man is in the background, two or three people back. No suit, no dark sunglasses, no ear piece. But watching peoples hands.
Let us all go piss on "Bull" Conner's grave. No prayers, no wishes, just piss on that man's grave.

The world has rolled over, and Senator McCain has become the "Incredible Shrinking White Guy", and Mr. Obama is about to buy a $ 341,000,000 mallet to beat him to political pulp.

  280. To all of the Clinton supporters, -

This election is following a pattern of American history. The suffragettes, and the abolitionists made common ground long before the Civil War. But they fell out with each other . Black men got the vote (on paper) long before women-white or black could vote. But thousands of black men and unknown numbers of black women, were lynched before those votes were ever counted. One of the last was a teenager by the name of Emmett Till . A 14 year-old from Chicago.

    http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/till/

He was beaten to a pulp, "his eye had been gouged out, before he was shot through the head and thrown into the Tallahatchie River with a 75-pound cotton gin fan tied to his neck with barbed wire. His body was in the river for three days before it was discovered and retrieved by two fishermen".

Because he looked at a white woman the wrong way in a place called Money, Miss.

This occurred in 1955. 8 years before the speech that Dr. King gave at the Lincoln Memorial, and 1 year after the SCOTUS handed down "Brown v Board of Education".

    More about Emmett's father :

"Emmett's father, Louis Till, was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. While serving in Italy, he was convicted of raping two women and killing a third. He was executed by the Army by hanging near Pisa in July 1945. Before Emmett Till's killing, the Till family knew none of this, having been told only that Louis had been killed due to "willful misconduct". The facts of Louis Till's execution were made widely known after Emmett Till's death by segregationist senator James Eastland in an apparent attempt to turn public support away from Mamie Till Bradley just weeks before the trials of Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, the implication being that criminal behavior ran in the Till family."
(Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, confessed to "Look" magazine after they had been aqquitted at trial)

Emmett's death sparked the modern civil rights movement.
Because his mother Mamie insisted on an open casket, and the Black Press took up the story

Which in turn paved the way for the movement that gave all women in America control over their own bodies. The day that Dr. King spoke at the Lincoln Memorial, birth control was still illegal. Not abortion, but the pill itself was illegal.

Now I'm not going to tell you all to "wait your turn". That's not what I'm saying at all. What I'm saying is that there is a pattern here.
Like the building of Hoover Dam. The first man to die, and the last to die on that American icon were a father and son. In between were some 130 people.

Or this bit of Americana -

"April 9, 1865 marks the end of the Civil War. On that day, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. Ironically, the site of this last major battle was owned by Wilmer McLean, a retired officer of the Virginia militia, who had moved his family into the Courthouse nearly four years earlier after his farm in Northern Virginia became the site of the first battle of Bull Run. It could be said that McLean hosted both the beginning and the end of the Civil War."

Does America need a woman president ?
    Absolutely.
    Will we have one ?
    Absolutely.
Will it be Hillary Clinton ?
Maybe, but 4 years ago we all had never heard of Barack Obama.

Senator Obama will give his acceptance speech this summer - 45 years to the day after Dr. King gave that speech at the Lincoln Memorial.

I'm guessing that Emmett Till's ghost will head home to Chicago shortly there after, and Louis Till's ghost is on his way home from Italy.

"I'd be a poor newspaperman indeed if I didn't know what everybody else knows!"

  282. Fellow birders,

Enjoyed the marvelous anecdotes of the past 24-hours!

Stinky and I are morning people--usually up before dawn every day year around. Part of our ritual includes walking the neighborhood, picking up the newspapers, checking the planters, etc. All this is being done as the oatmeal is, resting and the coffee is spreading its aroma.

Then we sit at the breakfast table and I turn the breakfast room TV to channel 4 which is our security cameras. As the sun starts rising, the microphones on the cameras start capturing the sounds of our cardinals calling out to one another.

Consider their calls in the context that they are monogamous.

The male calls out, "Here I am, Here I am, I'm so handsome, here I am!" To which his mate replies, "Oh sweetie, yes you are, Yes you are! And, aren't I cute, too?"

That last question recieives the appropriate reply replete with assurances of undying love.

And then the process repeats itself!

    It's marvelous!

    Patsi,

I usually go through the posts backwards and when I saw your 7:26 post, the first thing I thought was that you may have just perfectly summarized why the working class doesn't like obama.

All those words that have been written and said to analyze why Obama can't connect with the 'working class" and you just said it in four words.

    - Obama is a phony -
and the working class can spot one a mile off.

All of this you probably know I already subscribe.

So, the main reason for my comment is to thank you for a word new to me that you use most effectively in a context that absolutely suits it.

Solidarity is more than compromise, and shouldn't be mistaken as such. At its core is respect: respect for people and their experiences, respect for possibility, respect for the not-yet-known. It doesn't require assimilation (which must always contain some degree of erasure) and it belies two-dimensional (black and white) thinking.

I beleive that is exactly what you will see weaved throughout Barack Obama campaign.

  312. "And both candidates were going to supply the world with enough vacine to save us all!

Politics as usual or perhaps a bit more painful this year. I know watching Mr. Magoo (McCain) is very painful for me. "

    ROFL, BlondeW!!!!!!

Ii'd forgotten about the bird flu issue! And yes, watching McCain is very painful. The sad thing for me is knowing damn well that no matter which of these clowns is elected, somebody else is going to be running things.

  313. It won't be so obvious as your thoughts, but things will be said to ease the hurt and heal the wounds....

They are after-all politicians...this is what they do over an over everyday.

Flatus thanks for sharing that information on the canal. As a people we have surely been exploited as have many other groups. It has probably created in us a certain mindset.

  317. By the way, Burrito -- Good piece on your decision to support Obama. I hope no one thinks that my mistrust of the man and his tactics means I consider Hillary's backers voting for him is somehow "traiterous."

I truly believe that's a decision everyone must make. My son is about half pissed at me for my unwillingness to do my usual Dem Party two-step with the bumper stickers, yard signs and campaigning in the neighborhood -- let alone my decision to write-in Hillary. And my son was a Hillary voter. :)

And -- I've promised myson and another friend here that if -- IF -- in the last days before the election, polls say TN is a potential win for the Democrats, I'll probably hold my nose and vote for the man....

  318. WC Fields released on a record LP that "carrying democracy too far" punchline about a closed bar on voting day at least prior to 1946 when he died on christmas day, but probably sometime in the thirties or whenever it was that he was riding high, relatively speaking, with his radio appearances with Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy.

  319. Okay, Rolling Stone fans will hate this but I am going to say that Jann Wenner is a racist. Flat out racist. I always knew he was sexist, but I'm now adding racist to the list.

He's on Reliable Sources saying the reason he's been putting Obama on the cover of all his magazines (even before the primary was over) was because of the historical aspect of the candicacy.

He then said, "no explanation necessary."

    Translation: he's black.

Meaning: a female candidate is NOT historic.

Secondary meaning: Jann has a crush on Obama.

  323. I am shocked by the treatment our best two-term president endured during this campaign. First of all Bill Clinton faced impeachment over having sex with an intern and George Bush has gotten away with murder.

Second, Bill was absolutely right in stating what the rest of felt at the time. Obama didn't have a chance in hell to be the president of the United States. Obama's campaign was a fantasy at the time Bill said that.

Third, the fact that African Americans turned on him after being called racist over one comment, forgetting all he had done for blacks in his two-term presidency. I want to know who is racist when the vote is 92% to 8% for Obama.

Fourth, the treatment of the First Lady just because she was a women really brought out the treatment of women in general.

Fifth, what they both had to endure when Barack Obama claimed victory and acting like the nominee before he was declared the nominee.

Sixth, every time I said "gotcha" when shocking stories came out. It turned out he was the chosen one and the media did everything in their power to say we will report only the bad about the Clintons and ignore anything about Obama except for Fox News.

Seventh, to have Hillary lose the nomination over half votes and giving delegates to someone who wasn't on the ballot has made many of us feel like this is a repeat of the 2000 and 2004 elections.

Eight, People who wouldn't be where they are if it weren't for the Clintons putting them in their administration turning on them the way they did in endorsing someone with no experience at all.

No wonder women are furious. We had to endure the constant misogyny of Hillary. We also were angry at women pundits who think attacking women make them one of the boys was unbelievable.

The way the media picked the nominee has got us all furious. Feeling like our votes were just an exercise and nothing more is not a good feeling in a Democracy.

Being from Arizona, I know that McCain is a crook. Our own governor was impeached for the very same acts. This man is the worst choice for many reasons. McCain does not deserve to be the president of this United States. McCain does not deserve an "ancient history".

Many women and men who voted for Hillary in the primaries are planning on demanding that Hillary be on the first ballot at the convention. If that does not happen things could get very ugly in Denver. It won't be a repeat of '68 but what happens after the convention is going to be history making in the way Hillary voters cast their votes.

Many Hillary Clinton voters really feel that she is being forced to back Obama but secretly wants us to carry on to Denver. With the "Million Voter March" being planned in all 50 states our voices will be heard.
