Happy Friday ! Everyone,
Love the video Craig.
We need to remember just how fast time flies, it will be fall before we blink .... All Barack and Hillary need to do is come up with one or two stories per week to keep themselves center stage and front page.
4th of July is next week.....
off to walk to work!
peace~

uh oh Craig,
You're going to get the gun opponents going again today, with those gun scenes you just showed.
Somehow, I don't think it's going to have as happy an ending as 'The Graduate' did, but that was great. Such a happy ending for your video.
Love it. One can always hope.

mornin' all.
Can't watch the video, but unity in the party? Maybe between Hillary and Barack, but I don't see it among their supporters. 2/3 of Hillary's supporters (just my WAG) will vote for Obama, if for no other reason, because he's the Dem nominee and they consider themselves Dems (me, f'rinstance). Maybe half of them will be happy about it (not me, f'rinstance). And short of a monumental FU by Obama, he'll win in Nov., Gallup's daily from yesterday showing them tied notwithstanding. After that it's "Katy, bar the door."
Repost from last thread:
everyone in the DC area sleep better last night knowing you can blow intruders away again? I was on the road yesterday PM so I missed the fun here. And they think guns are dangerous? Shows that the modern equivalent of the pen is indeed mightier than the modern equivualent of the sword.
I did get a chance to think about the court's gun ruling and think it boils down to 2 key points: 1. the 2nd amendment confers on individuals the right to possess arms; and 2. a state (or territory or district) can't regulate the individual right conferred by the amendment to the extent that it can't be exercised. Everything else will have to be thrashed out in the courts. I think the self defense language - which the news media is obsessed with - was nothing more than rambling dicta by the uberconservative court elder - it is not in the amendment, and in fact is contrary to the language of the amendment.

Hey Blonde Wino -- I'm still undecided too. But have you even started to think -- oh well, it would be nice to win...and some of my friends are now supporting Ombama...and maybe I'm feeling a little softer toward Obama because Hillary says she wants us to unify....and then I just think, no, no, no....not that guy and his Chi-town goon squad. Such tsauris!

On the DC gun thing -- in my part of Virginia it's not uncommon to see people open-carry. It's against state law to conceal carry in a bar or restaurant, but open carry is legal in those places.
I wonder what will happen to the crime rate in DC now that the law-abiding people can own guns.

Alicia, that open carry law is not that uncommon from what I've heard. It strikes me as a remnant of the old west pre-concealed weapons permit days. Talk about a stupid law IMO. Let people carry guns only if they carry them openly? I really don't get it. I guess it does benefit the police, though.

Or, Pogo, she might try Safari to see if it will give a more Mac-like experience.
Yes the self-defense rhetoric was overdone. Granting individuals the right to have, and use, arms in the defense of home and hearth wasn't.
If I lived in an environment where I thought home invasion was a real probability, I would probably have a hand gun or a riot gun loaded with 00-buckshot.
Really well done video, Craig.
But, where I am, I'm satisfied having a combat fighting knife available.
FWIW, when one of my daughters was threatened with bodily harm, I stuck a butcher knife in my belt and confronted the miscreant who was stalking her. His behavior changed and there were no further incidents with him.

flatus, even the home-hearth argument was overdone IMO, considering that Scalia is an avowed originalist. If he was true to the original intent of the amendment, the purpose of the right was two fold - to protect home and hearth against government intrusion and the country against foreign threats. His wandering Dicta doesn't really reflect that.

What military enlisted people deserve.
--Competent leadership at every level; leadership that won't squander their lives on missions that are not truly in the national interest. Leaders who are technically competent in the military arts and impart that competence in those for whom they are responsible.
--A culture in which private soldiers have absolute confidence and trust in the people at their sides.
--Knowledge that their dependent families are free from financial worry and are provided healthcare that was promised them when their family member enlisted.
--Adequate pay.
--Absolute assurance that in the event of death or injury, the soldiers family will be well taken care of.
--Total confidence that disabilities resulting from service will be treated at the current state of medical profession for so long as the disability limits the veterans ability to function.
--Protecting the legal rights of the soldier from adverse legal actions at times when the soldier cannot properly react.
--Provide other incentives that a grateful nation may see fit in granting.
The new G.I. Bill is not something that soldiers were begging for, at least at the level that it was granted. As passed, it mandates a potential long-term liability of $60k for each member of the military. The numbers are astronomical and will surely come at the expense of other programs that may be more vital to the service member.
But, this I state unequivocally. Our honorably serving and discharged military deserve to go to the head of the line when dollars are being tossed at segments of our population.

Jack, the Exxon decision will work its way into my business. I am not sure how quickly or to what extent since it is a federal decision and most of the cases I have are in state court. That said, the last 2 punitive damages cases from the USSCt have been widely adopted and applied as strongly persuasive even though not binding - even by our court. I still haven't read the case to see how it's limited.
Alicia, you're smart not to piss off someone whose gun you can see - of course you still have to wonder, does he (or she) or doesn't he?

In Texas, there are a lot of places of business that have posted signs near the front door that say in essence that carrying a hand gun into their place of business is against the law. In Texas, also, it is not legal to carry a weapon in the open either. Since I don't carry or have a license to carry, I don't know how enforcible those signs are if push comes to shove. I hope it never happens again. WRT's the Luby Massacre, there has been some speculation as to what the damage would have been had there been some armed patrons in the restaurant that evening. Some argue fewer would have died or been wounded and some argue that more would have died because of bad shots. It has been a long time since that happened, but I am not sure any thing would have prevented him from doing what he had set out to do.

Did Rezko prosecutors protect Obama? Or should he be worried about what comes next?
"Is it possible that there are more troubling days ahead for Sen. Obama—particularly since rumors are rumbling around Springfield that either 1.) impeachment may be on the table for Blagojevich or 2.) Rezko's prosecutors are ready to paint a target on Blagojevich's back? Either way, speculation abounds that Blagojevich is no Rezko; he may not be willing to so quickly exchange his mansion for a jail cell."

'dooty, I have to assume that there are laws in Texas, whether at the state or local level, that prohibit taking guns into restaurants and/or bars?
just noodling around, I found stats showing that only Swizerland has a higher percentage of gun ownership as a proportion of homes with guns than the US, and no one beats us when it comes to death by guns - whether homicide or suicide. Even so, homicide is beaten out by 14 other causes of death (about half lf all homicides are gun related), one of which is suicide (again, about half are with guns). Neither of them are in the top 10. Still with about 80 gun deaths per day in the US, it's nothing to be casual about.

I wasn't recommending open carry of firearms, or carrying at all for that matter. A drunk and a gun are a dangerous combination. It's bad enough when you combine a drunk and a ton of movable metal.

Though he had tried to avoid taking a firm stand on either the ban or the case, an unnamed staffer last year told the Chicago Tribune that "Obama believes the D.C. handgun law is constitutional."
On Thursday, though, the Obama campaign distanced itself from that record, which would have considerable downside risk for a presidential candidate running on a 50-state landscape.
Obama's top spokesman, Bill Burton, said that the statement to the Chicago Tribune "was not worded as well as it could have been" and that Obama believes that generally the Constitution "doesn't prevent local and state governments from enacting their own gun laws."
After the high court ruling, Obama said in a statement he has "always believed that the Second Amendment protects the right of individuals to bear arms, but I also identify with the need for crime-ravaged communities to save their children from the violence that plagues our streets through common-sense, effective safety measures."
The Court "has now endorsed that view," Obama asserted, citing a passage in Justice Antonin Scalia's majority opinion which begins: "Like most rights, the right secured by the Second Amendment is not unlimited."

- Carried a cricket bat around on tour with him, as partly an "affectation" in Marty DiBergi's phrasing, but also because " it's come in useful in a couple of situations. Certainly in the topsy-turvy world of heavy rock, having a good solid piece of wood in your hand is quite often...useful." -

Some Democrats claim new polls by Newsweek and the Los Angeles Times showing Sen. McCain trailing by 15 points in each seal the deal on an Obama presidency. But both polls appear to be outliers. Other polls show the race to be close."

June polls aren't elections. But if the Unity tour does what it's supposed to, you add Hillary 18,000,000 to Barack's 18,000,000, and by November THAT my friends may be the reality, there will be a dem in the whitehouse, to which I yell, "WHEW!!"

Patsi said, "That, and the waves of humid heat I felt as I got off the plane from Denver in Hobby.....stunned me."
I can remember way back in the olden days when cars did not have A/C as you drove south from FTW as you got to about 50 or so miles north of Houston, it was like being hit in the face with a wet wash cloth. You had to have the windows rolled down or you were gonna fry your brain cells.
July is a pretty warm month but you should come back in late August or early Sept. The ground has had all summer to heat up and it really gets hot then.
I am told that down in the Rio Grande Valley it gets hotter and the humidity is higher. I have only been there twice and I remember it being a pretty miserable place to visit. The wind was blowing at about 25mph and it was like a blast furnace.
IIRC, Nashville can get pretty hot and humid also.

Dooty, Patsi,
Right now, I'm driving a car with broken air conditioning. On top of that, my office is a meat locker. To better illustrate the temperature difference...
Car- 100 degrees
Office- 65 degrees
If I wear long sleeves to be warm in my office, I sweat my ass off in the car.
If I dress for the heat, I find myself having to step outside just to warm up...

And yet, now that Hil'ry is carrying water for BO, I will have no trouble voting for the most capable person left on the ballot: John McCain.
BO has done as little as possible, flip-flopped when pressed on issues, has questionable associations, and is only in this position because the media supported him/looked the other way.
BO would be an absolute disaster of a prez & he doesn't deserve to be the Dem nom.
Smarmy won't get my vote.

"those with the biggest problems with the border and who crosses are those that live the farthest away from said border. "
On the border they are your friends and neighbors. Farther north they can be gangs, drug dealers, and people undercutting wages.
There has to be a way to protect and legalize the activities of the decent and hardworking while locking up the bad guys. If the Mexican government were a little more helpful, there would probably be less animosity.

I'm continually amazed at the people here who are shocked that I haven't moved from what has become the area of choice for many Latinos. And I've noticed that some of my neighbors gossip a bit about the large Mexican family down the street. They are great people, have improved their property. Their kids are very nice. Jeezus.
And I still say that I NEVER see those families using WICA cards at the grocery store. (Am seeing lots more whites, blacks and MidEast-appearing people using them as the economy has worsened....) So I'm not sure where all that "Mexicans abusing food stamps" screaming comes from.

So, BO's plane is bigger, less fuel efficient & more of a hazard to the environment.
BO gets no bump from Edwards' endorsement. Gore doesn't endorse BO until after it's a done deal; does nothing to help him win during the primary season. Hil'ry fights him until the end & BO has to pay her to support him.
Yep, another stellar candidate brought to you by the folks who brought you John Kerrey.

"But if the Unity tour does what it's supposed to, you add Hillary 18,000,000 to Barack's 18,000,000"
Finally -- somebody admits this horse race was a photo finish. Most of the comments from the O-team seem to indicate that Hillary went down in flames and in therefore old news. Fact is, she had half the votes.
Seriously, the media treats her like some huge loser. I just shake my head over this attitude.

Patsi,
Most of that is right wing fantasy. The ones who might be doing that are U.S. Citizens who have hit hard times, not illegal immigrants.
Now there are large costs involved in immigration such as education and medical care. Those are among the reasons for the California budget mess, but food stamps not so much.

Looking at all these "Unite For Change" signs just makes me think why would he want to walk away from a match that would guarantee the election.
The Obama supporters aren't going to desert him just because she is on the ticket, and the Clinton supporters are more likely to join up with happy smiles on their faces instead of begrudging, "well maybe".
The Independents aren't going to run for McCain in a snit fit. They are too upset with Bush. That leaves the hard core Republicans, and I just don't see mud throwing from that crowd will work this time.

"you got to about 50 or so miles north of Houston, it was like being hit in the face with a wet wash cloth."
Yes indeed, Dooty. I'd flown in from humidity-free Denver. You know at Hobby, you get (or used to) off the plane outside the terminal. You could literally see the heat waves coming off the pavement. It really did hit you in the face.
I was covering the shows for a magazine....and my hair, naturally nappy anyway, turned into a Brillo Pad. But the main thing was the thirst. I could get free Gilley's beer...and I remember Billy Joe Shaver telling me that I should drink it all day long, that I'd just sweat it out and never get drunk. And that was absolutely the truth.

Poor HRC. She must have been biting her lip today, having to utter those word and knowing deep down within her soul the inferior, the less qualified individual was ushered to the head of the line. Funny a CMH recipient wrote her the letter, and not BHO. Write in HRC come November, let her you know and understand she isn't forgotten, let her know that sexism will not be tolerated. There is probably not enough Listerine in the world to get the bad taste out of her mouth. Sitting there now looking at the incompetent one getting the promotion. For a person who so strongly fought for and was a promoter of women's rights, HRC became a victim of the the D party version of the glass ceiling. They were even called racist, by BHO supporters. This has to be a very bitter pill for HRC and Bill to swallow.

This race went 500 miles, and it was divided by the margin of 1 inch. Regardless, the winner was an absolute winner. He gets to pose with the check and do his burnout. That notwithstanding, it doesn't diminish how well the second place driver did.

Jack, can't open youtube here, so I can't say. The most interesting depo I ever was involved in was taken by a lawyer who after a pretty routine morning session (read "boring") went out at lunch and got 3 sheets to the wind. One of the other lawyers involved - who is now a U S Magistrate Judge - and I discussed whether we needed to report him to the state bar's impaired lawyer committee. We didn't - we figured he'd be sober by the time we got someone and that the transcript wouldn't adequately reflect his antics. Mostly they are akin to listening to grass grow.

FryDaddy,
As a Patriots fan, it pains me to bring up the Super Bowl loss to the Giants but if one must draw the comparison, Hillary may have been the better team before the game (NE) but she got her ass handed to her by a hungrier team that no one gave a shot in hell to win (NYG).
Yes, the Clinton's were called racist. Obama was called a sexist.
The Clinton's were counting on Obama being intimidated, just like the Pats were hoping. They were treated early on to the rude reality that they he was unbowed.
In that football game, when the pass interference wasn't called against Amani Toomer, I knew that the refs were going to give the Giants every possible advantage. Clinton supporters will point to her press coverage as the same thing. The mistake that NE made is that they allowed the Giants to hang around and win it at the end.
Hillary ignored way too many contests early in the game which created the hostile environment that she found herself unable to overcome.
After the Patriots lost, you didn't hear one player or coach, publicly complain about the game. They all credited the Giants for being the better team and the deserving champs. Rodney Harrison went so far as to write the forward in David Tyree's book.
I am convinced that had the Patriots won, we would have heard a lot from the Giants about how the Patriots got lucky or what have you but I think you can tell more by how people do after they lose than when they win.

Deja Vu
"Today I know “how” people voted for Richard Nixon in a historic landslide. Nobody really thought he was so great. The problem was they refused to vote for McGovern.
Really, as I look back in retrospect, George McGovern was a gentleman. Next to Barack Obama he was brilliant and honest. He had the experience and the service to his country to add to his resume. He actually had a real resume. His resume made Barack Obama look like a Playground Director. And he was a pleasant enough guy as well. He didn’t offend women at all either."

He looks nice, nice looking family, speaks well as long as he has a teleprompter in-front of him, but he is so lacking in gravitas. pogo said this, "hd, I think you may be right about the more remote citizens having a stronger desire to keep the brown folks out. But my money says more than a few of them have no problem hiring the ones who came over, under around or through. Fence, my ass. People around here have pretty strong opinions about it, and most of our Mexican looking folks are in the 2 Mexican restaurants here - or are in a pickup truck that drives around and does lawn and other similar work on a pick up basis."
Pogo, I was not talking about remote citizens. I was subtly suggesting the folks in Washington are a long way from the border and basically have not a clue to the border issues.
sure there are gangs and drug dealers. I don't know if anyone has noticed that there are also gangs that are not Mexican. They also do work for a wage that no white person will do for twice that. People talk about driving down wages but seem to not understand market issues. There are some companies that simply cannot afford to pay more money. You can only charge what people are willing to pay.
I agree that Mexico has enormous problems economically and the US could probably do more to help. The border towns have been taken over by the drug cartels and the violence carries over to this side. I don't have any answers either.

ET, interesting to see the difference in perspective on the two sides of the pond. I figure the truth is somewhere between Krugman's take and the position of Belgium's financial newspaper's take.

Recently Unsealed Court Documents Reveal Obama Heavily Embroiled in Rezko Case
"Fitzgerald and the prosecutors are particularly concerned with Obama’s acceptance of “straw” campaign contributions others made on Rezko’s behalf. I quote the Sun-Times:
The Illinois senator was the recipient of “straw” campaign contributions made by others on behalf of Rezko — money that Obama has since given to charities.
“Witnesses will testify that Rezko was a long-standing supporter and fund-raiser of Barack Obama,” prosecutors wrote."

Mexico wouldn't have such a great economic problem if its oligarchy wasn't draining the majority of the wealth. Ahhh the Great Smokies, love it there ... I went down to Gatlinburg the 2nd week of March w/my daughter .. Stayed at one of the many motels that are built over the beautiful brooks coming down the mountain .. every morning, took my coffee out on my balcony & watched the Duck family sunning themselves & bathing on the rocks in the middle or the squirrels running up & down the tress .. my balcon was only about 50 feet above .. loved it & can't wait to go back .. my sister & her hubby go down there at least 4 to 5 times a year .. even in the winter, there's things to do there ..

"Unfortunately, the U.S. is starting to copy this model with the majority of the wealth going to the top 1% while destroying the middle class and impoverishing the lower class even more rather than the other way around."
Very true, Jamie...
And for Dooty and Pogo: Have you heard this sort of thing from any Mexicans? I know several who say that the real gang problem -- the one that worries them -- is coming up from Central and South America. And that some of them (the Mexicans) feel especially threatened by them.

Craig, please forgive me for inserting an entire Kipling poem But it's important and is germane to the current political scene and should be required reading by all.
Here it is, chastise me if you must:
Tommy
Poem lyrics of Tommy by Rudyard Kipling.
I went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide,
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide.
Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll,
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.
We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind",
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind,
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind.
You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

Viv, It's really hard to beat the Smokies for forested mountain beauty. Gatlinburg used to be a fairly quaint town (except for Ripley's), and it was always nice to drop in there for real food and a shower after a long weekend or more hiking along the Appalachian Trail. If you get back over that way, there are a slew of great places to go whether you want to walk or drive. When we were done hiking I was always pretty fond of driving over toward Cherokee, NC and stopping by the stream that parallels the road.

Most people joked about it , including a lot of the ones who called out themselves for doing it.

I am a real neophyte to the world of blogging and websites etc, but in my inexperienced opinion, why can't people mention another site or blog? We all sure mention everything else.
So there is a competition in the world of blogging to get and keep posters? Huh. I suspect it's a free market and will stay that way.
As for me, I'll stay here - there's enough difference of opinion here and a lot of interesting folk and education.
From what I could tell from my two dips into the Back Channel, it's not for me - angry and strident and bitterly sarcastic, but everyone there wants to be there, so I wish them well. Should any one try to force me there, well, that's a different story - I know how to deal with that.

On the issue of a border fence between the USA and Mexico, I agree with it and hope it remains. Too many criminals are crossing freely from Mexico into the USA. At the same time, I hope as much effort is invested in opening opportunities for Mexicans and other people to be allowed to enter the states as legal immigrants. Of course this could only happen after requisite background checks and employability. I would also consider family reunification a positive right for crossing into the USA to be with their loved ones!

On the border fence: It was never needed in SoCal until we closed our borders to the temporary workers who used to go back and forth without incident. When that opportunity was denied, desperate people began rushing up the freeways (the beware of running people signs are still there), "we" built a fence and forced the immigrants out into the heat of the desert. A native Californian, the immigrants I'd like to see go back home are those who came here from other states.
On the GI Bill: The whole issue is political posturing. McCain offered to work with Webb and was rejected. The GOP bill explicitly provides for transferability of benefits. The Webb bill relies on prior practice of transferability. The Webb bill offers full benefits for everyone, the McCain bill offers graduated benefits depending upon length of service. A compromise could be reached if it weren't an election year.
On Unity: Am I the only one who thought that Hillary was more hopeful, more uplifting, and just plain easier to listen to? Am I the only woman who found Sen Obama's attempts to appeal to women voters oddly phrased? How does it help his daughters to know they can do anything that a woman once again has to take the back seat? And what was all that condescending stuff about "doing it in heels?" Hillary is not Ginger Rogers.

Yesterday in the Senate she had quite a crowd around her...talking quite animatedly to Sen Casey among others. And something Patsi would enjoy ... Sen McCaskill sort of hanging just outside the knot of people, perhaps hoping someone would say something to her.

One of the reasons I kind of like the idea of divided government is that when the President is one party and the Congress another, we have hearings and get to the bottom of things...when both are the same Party, not so much.

Senator McCaskill has put herself in a rough spot. She has isolated herself from her natural allies the Blue dogs and she can not become a whole hearted liberal wing member because she needs to keep her seat. That makes her a little lonely freshman. In the senate that is just sad, and dangerous for your political career.

Jack: I note with some curiosity that McCaskill votes the party line quite a bit more than Mary Landrieu. Perhaps she feels that the endorsement of Sen Obama will gain her sufficient votes in Kansas City and St Louis that she won't have to worry about the red part of the state. Hard to say. I will note that I have found her questioning in committee less than stellar on many occasions and as yet know of no legislation she has worked on. Quite unlike the way the party pushed Sen Stabenow to the forefront the minute she arrived, or the way Hillary gained allies and learned the issues.

Of course, I don't agree with him on the war. But now Obama is saying he will do what the Generals recommend also. So, who knows?

Lard: That funny old saying of your Dad's is the punch line to an old joke on the Borscht belt circuit. It begins when someone sees an elderly Rabbi making the sign of the cross... and follows from there. In the original version, the last two words are wallet, watch -- so the joke is at least as old as a time when most men carried pocket watches.

chloe: I am very torn on the issue of the war. I opposed it bitterly, from the beginning as wholly and totally wrong in a way we had not been wrong since the invasion of the Philippines. Even if there had been WMDs, it was wrong to invade.
But, having invaded, I feel that a precipitate withdrawal would be equally wrong.
I cannot help but feeling that if our President had been anyone else at all, the invasion of Iraq never would have happened.

Maggs...that's great. Thanks for the background info.
And yes, I forgot to include the funniest detail of the routine: The checklist is accompanied by each of the four points on the sign of the cross.
My dad was a really funny guy. He was always goofin' like that. Even after he was in the last stages of Alzheimer's the inner jokester was always there.

A random thought on the event at Unity, NH.
If I were advising Sen Obama, I would suggest that he might not want to do too many more events with Sen Clinton as his opening act ... rather than winning over Hillary voters, it might just make more of them realize what the country has lost.

I wonder now why my Dad substituted "cigar" for "watch"?
Kinda Freudian.
Posted by: LardassLiberal

Actually, Jamie, now that you give me the context of ending a visit to the local prostitute, the absolute functionality of that checklist becomes evident.
Dad never told us that part either.

Patsi,
Just scanned that article you just linked. There's been others signs of things here starting to fall apart too. All the faulty imports from China, including that bad pet food a while back. The produce at our markets has been looking really bad (even though it's gone way up in price). There were those salmonella tomatoes a week or two ago. Walmart grocery here is running out of all kinds of stuff, and carrying less variety of brands. I guess the stores are getting fewer shipments because of gas prices.
I actually joked to my husband last week, this is starting to look like a third world country. I've never seen anything like it. And don't see any signs of improvement.

BTW, I'm coming around to voting for Sen. Obama rather than a blank or 3rd party (can't vote McCain). A great deal will depend on the VP appointment as that will be a measure of his judgement for me.

Lard: An interesting thing about Alzheimer's is that side effect ... the inner core of the victim is the very last thing to go. My aunt, right up until the end would come alive when we sang her the old songs and told her stories from the old neighborhood (which none of us had ever even seen...just stories we had heard when we were young). She was a dear, kind person and that essential sweetness of disposition endured.

Maggs...that "inner core" theory can be scary too. As I learned more about the disease via my Dad's decline, I heard countless stories of the gentlest, mildest-mannered men who would suddently become angry and abusive toward their wives.
Was that inner core always there, but hidden behind a mask, one wondered?

Fascinating stuff about alzheimers....
My dad died of kidney disease which leaves you in and out of reality at the end. A few days before he died, Mom wheeled him out of the nursing home and he glanced over and asked, "Liz, is that our car?"
She said yes it was, surprised he was so lucid. And he looked up, grinned and winked and said, "Let's make a run for it."

This is Craig's political place and corresponds to the articles he writes for Congressional Quarterly and his tv appearances. As such the conversations here tend to be political (except when trading recipes, music, and general gossip).
In order to have a place that didn't get quite so heated, he established a MySpace page where people could be more personal and less political. Most of us now are in both places, but still gravitate here for the political discussions.

Mom died just 10 months after he did. She had been suffering for five years with multiple myeloma -- which is a horribly debilitating bone-marrow cancer. All of us kids surrounded her as she went, in her own apartment.
The strangest thing I remember: The absolute first thing the hospice worker did once Mom was pronounced dead -- I mean the very second she was pronounced dead -- was to gather up, crush and flush every single painkilling medication in the apartment. And trust me, there were TONS of them...fentanyl patches, oxycodone pills, the works. Would have had a street value in the tens of thousands.
I love hospice workers. They are angels on this Earth.

On the issue of a border fence between the USA and Mexico, I agree with it and hope it remains. Too many criminals are crossing freely from Mexico into the USA
ET...
================
I agree, we NEED a fence all the way across ... as far as guest worker programs .. Lou Dobbs reports on this every night almost .. I believe he said there are 10 guest worker programs. 10!! every year we welcome LEGALLY, over 10 Million LEGAL Aliens ...
I, for one, do not think we should do anymore ..
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2008/06/26/ldt.wian.ice.raid.outrage.cnn
Everyone acts like Mexico is a poor country, they 're not ... They have alot of wealth ... Their government actually "encourges" their people to come to America .. they print up maps of the easies way to get here & who to contact for work, living arrangement, etc ...
Here's some more articles from Lou Dobbs on the subject :
http://loudobbs.tv.cnn.com/category/broken-borders/
Have tey made a mess of all of this, YES, I agree ... Bush & his cronies DO NOT want the order completely secure .. then all the companies who employ them would have to pay a living wage .. oh, they won't make as much money then, heaven forbid!!!

Totalitarian Tactics and an Illegitimate Nominee
"As Anglachel writes, there are several million of us who feel that Obama’s nomination is illegitimate, that his tactics are counter to our values as progressives, and that he is not the unity figure he claims to be. Indeed, Obama wears two masks: at one moment he gives high-minded speeches, at the next he is accusing Bill Clinton, a beloved former president, of racism.
As progressives, we are repulsed by the totalitarian nature of Obama’s candidacy — creating a cult of personality, the venom espoused by his adherents, the delegate stealing — tactics that are repugnant to the many who have spent a lifetime working for democracy and social justice."

Utopia -- Dobson wrote a book about "the strong willed child"...in it he equated teaching his little dog a lesson about beling "strong willed...here's part of it:
""When I told Sigmund to leave his warm seat and go to bed, he flattened his ears and slowly turned his head toward me. He deliberately braced himself by placing one paw on the edge of the furry lid, then hunched his shoulders, raised his lips to reveal the molars on both sides, and uttered his most threatening growl. That was Siggie's way of saying. "Get lost!"
"I had seen this defiant mood before, and knew there was only one way to deal with it. The ONLY way to make Siggie obey is to threaten him with destruction. Nothing else works. I turned and went to my closet and got a small belt to help me "reason" with Mr. Freud."
"What developed next is impossible to describe. That tiny dog and I had the most vicious fight ever staged between man and beast. I fought him up one wall and down the other, with both of us scratching and clawing and growling and swinging the belt. I am embarrassed by the memory of the entire scene. Inch by inch I moved him toward the family room and his bed. As a final desperate maneuver, Siggie backed into the corner for one last snarling stand. I eventually got him to bed, only because I outweighed him 200 to 12!"
May I turn into a bitch long enough to say that should I ever meet Mr. Dobson in a bar, I really WOULD beat the crap out of him....

I was probably part of that transition period being on the leading edge of the Boomers and living in a very musical household. There was a lot of big band and then 50s bland with lots of mellow stuff, show tunes, and "Your Hit Parade", and then early rock and finally ELVIS and everything changed!!!
The kids would listen to Make Believe Ballroom on their radios that was very vanilla with White covers of black music and then sneak over to the black stations when no one was paying attention to hear the real thing. It was quite a musical stew.

Bill is only a problem to the media. He gives them something to talk about, most of it false. If he's there, "Why is he there?". If he's not there, "Why isn't he ther?".
He would be just fine as either charity or political ambassador. He was the President for criminitly sake. He knows how to do the job and he probably would argue less than anyone else the prospective resident could send.
How much farther could he have gone not to step on their toes today? It was the media that had to say he was singing happy birthday to Mandela. Nobody else was paying atttention.

I never had any intention of voting for McCain. You can't do a write in in Washington so I couldn't do a protest with Hillary. I was considering a Green party vote with Dem the rest of the way down. NOW?
Time for Dr. Who and a long way to November.

I am in the dis-functional state of Ohio....no write- in(s) here either.
So either I sit out which will not help anyone, or I vote. I will vote.

Bill was a great president; it was great to have a Democrat at 1600 after that miserable Reagan. When Reagan was President I wrote critical letters to the local paper almost every day...every now and then they'd publish one.
Our union sent a large group of us to South Bend for a rally just before Bill got elected. That was the night Evan Bayh called me and two others of our group up onto the stage to chant "FOUR MORE DAYS!!"...as Bush 41 was to be beaten in four days in the general election. We had that hall absolutely rockin' !
Fast forward 8 years from that time, and Bill had left the country with a surplus ... nobody thought that could be done, but Bill did it.
Bush has goddam-nearly destroyed the country and any goodwill we had before he took office.
I have family who are big-time Democrat organizers and will undoubtedly be flying in for Obama's inauguration.
It will be the greatest day in Washington since Bill and Hillary moved into the White House.
Our long national nightmare is almost over, as someone once said. (haha!)

The concert rocked tonight! The only downer was the threat of a major thunderstorm. The concert was held outside , so we were told to return to our cars until it was safe. Dierks Bentley closed the show with "Folsum Prison Blues". Luke Bryant was good too! Cool Stuff! I

I think Bill is mis-understood....nothing more or less.
I believe basically he is a good person and wants our country to repair.
But can you imagine being president.....then being absolutely nothing? Bill needs a little ego repair, so that he can show the best of himself...I know it is in him!
I believe he will get there before our eyes.

I don't think that Bill Clinton's problem is that he was bored or ignored. He's been a busy guy since he left office. I agree that it's the media that has decided to destroy him.

Jamie -- I also think your decision -- whatever it is -- about voting will be the right one. Can't remember what state you are in....your vote might make a difference.

I'm in Washington. If it was any bluer it would be purple. What I do might matter down ballot but will have little to nothing to do with the Presidential election.
The only power I have is with my email list and those who say "what do I do", but they all know I'll say when in doubt go Dem and everyone hates Bush which makes it easy.

Now, as to this fluidity of history idea.....as an old history major, it's interesting. And depending how it's interpreted and implemented, possibly one of the most dangerous concepts around.
I take your point about not getting stuck in a point in time, but I'd be concerned with it taken to its conclusion. It could, given a certain governmental "leadership" and public temperment, authorize damn near anything. Rivers keep moving, but they can leave much in their wake.
PS-- what in the world are "tie dye pills"?

Jamie -- Definitely, the down ticket will be important. On the other hand, my Democratic congressman might as well be a Republican. And TN will go red now anyway.
I did promise my son that if the polls showed a close race -- which is not likely here -- I'd vote for the selected Democratic nominee.

A comment I've just posted on CNN.com... who knows if it will appear?
I am a STRONG Hillary Clinton supporter and it was evident to me that the mainstream media and the powers that be at the DNC were working hard to build up Mr. Obama and tear down Mrs. Clinton. I was also one of her supporters that was refusing to switch to Mr. Obama. However, the stakes are too high to let our anger and disappointment play out in such a way that Mr. McCain becomes President. If you feel Mr. McCain really represents our democratic values, then by all means vote for him. If it is a vote out of spite and anger, then doing such a “protest” vote will only continue the “excellent” stewardship of the Republicans for another 4 years. If that’s what you want, go for it. Just remember it is your own futures that are at stake.
Mr. Obama please choose Mrs. Clinton as your running mate. Build the ultimate DREAM TEAM!

That is so sweet and tender. I think it's so nice that your mother had that moment and realized her husband was still there! WOW.

No I did not say that immigrants were a major source of crime. I did say that drug dealers and gangs were among the people who immigrated.
I did say that I watched one show where the map of the Mexican government was described and I said that it was presented as a way to stay safe in the desert.
What is your problem with understanding what is written as opposed to what you want to see?

| June 28, 2008 2:05 AM
No dipshit, that's not what Jamie said. She was referring to specific groups coming into the country, not immigrants in general. And to the fact that, in fact, some of them represent drug and gang activities. As I said earlier, people I know among the Mexican community are as concerned, and in some cases more concerned, than anyone.

Folks Bill knows how this will all end. He made sure Hillary Soprano lost to Obama. "Bills monsters of the ID" did a very good job. Now he wants his money back. Obama wrote the first check, and his Rich Elite followers we get out their Louis Vuitton check books and do the same.
After all the checks have cleared and their is no debit. "Bills monsters of the ID" will do what every it takes to make sure Obama loses to McCain.
You see Bill still wants to be TOP DOG.

Craig,
I just wanted to add to the other reviews, that your video was a two thumbs up.
The subtext of your short film seems to be that the Obama-Hiillary
unity rally was a well-directed show. That's exactly what I thought
while watching it. Hillary must play the dutiful Obama supporter
now, if she's to have any political career in the Democratic party or
pay off even part of her campaign debt.
I didn't get a warm or excited feeling from either of their performances,
today. I doubt this pilot will be picked up as a series.

Thanks to all of you for the welcome and also for helping me understand this facepage. I think I will just stick with this for now. You all certainly provide a good diversity of political opinions and I love the "other" stuff also. Regarding Bill Clinton--I love him! He is just so human like when he gets hurt and angry. I can relate. I mean being called a racist when you opened the door to African Americans has to be hard to take.
