In today's Video Trail Mix (click screen above), Craig looks at how both Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain benefitted from a so-called "bounce" in the polls after winning their respective nominations.
I just watched The View. If Mark Mckinnon were Obamas media person ,as he was Bushes, he would have threw a fit. Twenty wasted minutes. One good story about her daughter. Thats it. Dont they practice these things, They had one super friendly on the panel . Shouldnt they have set her up with a couple of good questions. It doesnt make sense. Just on media image who would you want to sit next to on a airplane flight Michelle Obama or Cindy McCain?
Craig, don't go too crazy following the bouncing ball and the bouncing polls between now and November. Like I've said, the national polls don't mean a great deal as it's the state polls, especially in the so-called swing states, that are worth watching. Newsweek says at least one reliable pollster says the electoral college would end up in a tie, 269-269, if the election were held today. I don't quite buy that but I'm not a professional pollster, only a polling consumer for the past forty years or so. My understanding of the data is that Obama will win, 290-252. But, it could be closer depending on events between now and November. Have a great day everyone.
Do you expect the reporting out of NBC to be different, i.e. more slanted one way or another, now that Russert is gone? After all wasn't he the Washington bureau chief ?
As far as Obama's good favorability rating - we learned months ago that the less people know about a candidate, the higher his/her favorability rating. Thus, Obama's high favorability rating - we know tragically little about this out-of-his-league candidate.
Well, this is a surprise! I'm usually the tag end, and here I am number 10 (?)
Unlikely - I answered your last question on the last page if you're interested. Thanks for engaging in the conversation - it was food for thought. I would never want to hurt this country - that's the problem.
Sturgeone - is that a random thought or was there a path to it? I quite agree with you, btw. With the airlines tanking, tho, I may never be in an airplane again.
Someone requested names of good historical books, and aside from the ones you all have mentioned, all I can come up with is one I loved from a Russian history
class, 'Why Lenin? Why Stalin? by Theodore Von Laue.
It's not a big book but fascinating. The czar and czarina are not my favorite characters in history.
In fiction, I love Kenneth Roberts. Another author is pretty arcane - the other Winston Churchill, an American ca. 1900. He wrote 'The Crossing ' and
'Richard Carvel' and 'Janice Meredith' about the revolution, and 'The Crisis' about the Civil War, which I have never read because I hate that war. It's pretty old-fashioned and flowery, but I love them. Aside from the Civil War one, I've read them all quite a few times.
Speaking of reading books more than once, is it possible anyone here has read the Francis Lymond Series by Dorothy Dunnett which begins with "Game of Kings"?
MSM keeps saying, Oh if Teddy White were alive today - what would he have made of this?
They have not mentioned reading - because of course their reading stops at the current best sellers - his best and most inclisive, 'In Search of History'.
It may not have the imprimatur of the Durants or Churchill or Manchester, etc., but I strongly recommend it for anyone who would like an overall view of the world since... well, for most of the 20th century. I would warn your about the chapter about the jfk assassination, which I couldn't get through.
In the same vein, I would say read Edgar Snow's
'Red Star Over China".
Additionally in the fiction vein, " The Dream of the Red Chamber', altho I have have not had success in finding the full translation.
Today is the day for Scott McClellan to testify before the Judiciary committee. Morning news says they will focus on VP Cheney role in Valerie Plame identity case.
bethyboo, some of White's essays were really fun, too. He wrote one talking about his wife, a "Bryn Mawr woman". Anyone who knows a woman so afflicted will understand.
Watched Joe unload on Mr Obama this morning regarding his 180 on campaign financing. They played Mr Obama's announcement reneging on last year's promise.
He did the 'Nixon blink' every time he came to a point of gross obfuscation. He never once made eye contact with the camera.
"It sounds crazy at first. Amid dire reports about the toxic political environment for Republican candidates and the challenges facing John McCain, many top GOP strategists believe he can defeat Barack Obama — and by a margin exceeding President Bush’s Electoral College victory in 2004." http://dyn.politico.com/members/forums/thread.cfm?catid=1&subcatid=2&threadid=795810
Heard on CNN this morning that Obama was bullying emailers, but didn't catch the story. So did a search (obama campaign bullying emails) Scary endless list. This was first. Didn't realize how long ago this 'take over' started.
Obama takes MySpace page from backer
updated 12:11 p.m. CT, Thurs., May. 3, 2007
WASHINGTON - Is MySpace always mine or can it belong to someone else? At the cost of losing 160,000 friends, Democrat Barack Obama's presidential campaign has taken over control of the MySpace page listed under his name on the popular social networking site.
McCain hitting Obama hard on his written promise to use public fund financing and now reneging. McCain saying how can you trust him, if he goes back on his word on a written promise. I agree
Russ Feingold is also pissed about the decision to throw campaign financing under the limo. Obama has set this cause back decades. It has long been a huge issue for me, and I see no way for our system to improve unless campaigns are publically financed and equal.
But the biggest concern should be the willingness of Obama supporters to march in lockstep at this and any other backtrack. I truly believe if Obama came out in favor of waterboarding, his supporters would just stand there glassy-eyed chanting "Yes, we can!"
Politics should not be turned into a quasi-religion, and we should be very wary of it. That's exactly what the Bush crowd did and look what we got.
But the biggest concern should be the willingness of Obama supporters to march in lockstep at this and any other backtrack. Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | June 20, 2008 7:50 AM
If there's anyone who is a natural expert on "bouncing", it's you "Ping Pong"...
My thought for the day: Should Barack Obama come out during the campaign and formally break with the entire concept of a "War On Terror."? We take the concept as a given, now, because it's been part of our reality for going-on seven years. But don't forget it really is a political slogan created by the Bush Administration. So why shouldn't Obama make the formal renunciation of those words part of his campaign? Not that we're going to go "soft" on terrorism, but rather that we are simply going to eliminate the idea of an unending, hopeless, unwinnable "war" with no finish line -- a "war" that was designed primarily to manipulate people through fear.
Any thoughts? Would it help or hurt Obama to explicitly declare War on the War On Terror?
Or has he done as much implicitly already in this long campaign?
HmmmmLard I think Obama enlisted this week in the War on Terror
Sen. Barack Obama today named his National Security team and delivered a prepared speech on the war on terror and Guantanamo. I'm disappointed with it.
Three examples:
There are terrorists who are determined to kill as many Americans as they can. The world’s most dangerous weapons risk falling into the wrong hands. And that is why the single greatest priority of my presidency will be doing anything and everything that I can to keep the American people safe. (my emphasis.)
If you were hoping universal health care or creating more jobs or reducing our country's reliance on incarceration would be his greatest priority, this is a letdown. http://www.talkleft.com/main/2
"In short, there is nothing in this copy to indicate that it is, in fact, a "certified copy." As I have shown above, there is a whole lot of evidence that it is a manufactured copy. There certainly is a very strong motive for creating one."
In direct contradiction to recent Q and ARG polling, Ras sez McCain by 8 in Florida, and the off shore drilling issue does not hurt McCain:
The Florida survey also found that McCain currently leads Obama in the state by a 47% to 39% margin. Six percent (6%) said they would vote for some other candidate while 8% are undecided. However, after voters were told that McCain favored offshore drilling and Obama opposed it, McCain’s lead increased to eleven points, 49% to 38%. While a three-point net gain is not stunning, it is significant that the issue didn’t push voters towards Obama. All of McCain’s gains on the offshore drilling issue came from male voters.
Who is right? To be honest, this seems more in line with my feel for the state of the race in Florida. http://www.talkleft.com/main/2
I do, however, think there is still room for him to maneuver -- I think the object is to talk tough about national security on his own terms, not the failed terms of the Bush Administration. And the most symbolic way to do that would be to renounce the actual phrase "War On Terror"
A rhetorical gimmick? Maybe. But it might actual resonate with a citizenry that is tired of being told to be afraid all of the time.
LL - "My thought for the day: Should Barack Obama come out during the campaign and formally break with the entire concept of a "War On Terror."? "
That is an excellent idea, keep that thinking cap on....it helps the rest of us.... : )
I am off to the dog park....everyone enjoy your day.
The BHO ad that Joe keeps raving about fails to mention 2 things. 1. BHO is know for his ability to deliver a great message when read from a teleprompter, and 2. he didn't write it, he is only reading what someone wrote for him. Sure it sounds good, but the next time you see it look at BHO's eyes. There is certainly a disconnect between what you hear and what his eyes are saying say.
And is that ad with the mother holding her baby, isn't that a 527 ad? Funny MSNBC keeps running that ad right after the BHO ad.
Tell your young protogee that this video was sophisticated and nicely edited. Your always good on camera and your writing is great for TV. But this guy Souter? Is a natural and what could have been a nighmare with a bouncing ball, flows very well from one edit to another. Well done!

God, Republicans are saps. They think that they’re running against some academic liberal who wouldn’t wear flag pins on his lapel, whose wife isn’t proud of America and who went to some liberationist church where the pastor damned his own country. They think they’re running against some naïve university-town dreamer, the second coming of Adlai Stevenson.
But as recent weeks have made clear, Barack Obama is the most split-personality politician in the country today.
My personal take on this NON Issue for Barack Obama.
When faced with Public funding that would give him 87 million or public funding from small donors (Like Me)that equals 500 milliond.......wellllll.......
What would you choose? I know what McCain would have chosen and I know what it is costing this Thread.
The only people who have been impacted financially are the ones who donated.
Thats pretty good in my books. Nothing illegal, everything voluntary......So i don't really think this will impact his standing in the poles either.
The unbelievably ineffective team of Pelosi and Reid strike again. How can two people supposedly in charge of the majority party in both houses of Congress hand a President with barely a 30% favorability rating every single damn thing he wants?
Apparently the only thing they are good at is destroying their own party with their petty prejudices.
I think paying attention to polls during the summer is entertaining for political junkies only..... the rest of the population doesn't give a crap until after Labor Day.....
I agree that it simply will make no difference. As long as you are willing to admit that Barack Obama is a politician. He will do anything and everything to get elected just like every other politician before him.
Whether or not he will end up going down in history as someone whose machinations finally led to better conditions for the people of the US is a matter that will have to wait, but don't for a single second think that any of the high flown phrases mean a damn thing from any of them. They are what they are: Political animals and political animals bite.
Apparently the only thing they are good at is destroying their own party with their petty prejudices.

The only control we have over our politicians is with our vote.
Maybe now that the general public has become so aware of what's going on, there'll be enough organized agreement to do something about it.
Dude. Thanks for reminding me. We haven't seen bounce like we used to in the old days. I'm sort of ready for a new game, and Obama is playing like the young baller that he is, while McCain is looking like he's got a blown ACL. What happened to McCain? I remember enjoying his game. It was sort of fun watching the Celtic blow out the Lakers...it was highly disrespectful, but a lot of fun to watch.
The proposed 50 state strategy lives under the present campaign financing for Obama and the DEMS. This present phenomena of small donors lends an opportunity that will not come again in this age.
I say the Obama/Clinton and DNC finance teams are working to expand our reach for a long time to come and this is the best chance scenario.
I say let the rest of us who have donated our $50 for this month, help all of you too.
".... As long as you are willing to admit that Barack Obama is a politician." Jamie | June 20, 2008 9:42 AM
Agree.
It's not demeaning to Barack in any way to look at him objectively. You can disagree with some things about him and still support his candidacy. He's a much more attractive candidate if others don't insist on putting him on a pedestal. It's hard to agree with Obama fans that seem to insinuate he's perfect in every way. It turns those sitting on the fence to go the other way.
I agree that it simply will make no difference. As long as you are willing to admit that Barack Obama is a politician. He will do anything and everything to get elected just like every other politician before him
Jamie,
I agree! A politician is a politician. Obama is not a prophet. ;0)
But you have to admit that there is a "Chance" that Obama is being on the level with the public.
There have been honest politicians in American History. Time will tell if this one is a good as my hunch says. Myself and a great number of this country have vetted him ourselves. Under the present day selection We feel he is the best chance for change.
Politicians are never a sure thing. The political climate needs changing. I thing we are on the brink of being about to change it. We shall see!
I saw someone mention Russert was also the Washington Bureau Chief. Does that necessarily mean that whoever is chosen to host MTP is also the same person who becomes the new chief? If so, it's a much bigger appointment. And if it's a Washington outsider, they'll need to relocate. Maybe that goes without saying.??
I see young people not being able to voice the reason for their choice eloquently. That is what I see. I see the rest of us, having the choice of a "Politician" that so far, has been reasoned and brilliant in his handling of this campaign.
I see hope for great handling of a very tuff situation to inherit in January. Watch the gray hair excellerate.
Craig -- Throwing balls around the inside of my house will get a timeout. Nice video though!
Jamie -- I look at those Congressional Approval poll with a jaded eye. No one ever likes Congress collectively. Congress is usually held in the same esteem as real estate speculators and used car dealers. Unless, UNLESS, it's one's own Congressperson. Then the numbers tend to be a little more reflective. People tend to like their own individual Member of Congress more than they like the Congress as a whole.
The next Prez needs to come in with a strong, clear agenda -- and a timeline to get things done -- otherwise it will be more of the same because Congress leads as well as a herd of cats.
Time Russert was the first Washington Bureau Chief to have the MTP seat too.
I don't think they will do that this time. Its a daunting role. I think a journalist to meet Russerts standards on MTP is hard to find too. the next person to take the role of on air will have to start at a run.
NBC News Executives Debate Names to Replace Tim Russert
Russert was a fixture beside first Brokaw, then Williams, on election nights with his contagiously enthusiastic analysis. He was a frequent guest of the "Today" show, explaining the latest political developments. His loss likely means a larger on-air role for Chuck Todd, the network's political director, who was recruited to NBC News by Russert. Todd has been increasingly visible this political season, particularly on MSNBC. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,367866,00.html
I actually like him a little better this way ... clay feet and all. All that sweetness and light was putting me in danger of contracting diabetes just by being in the same room with one of the worshipful ones.
I just wish it had become more obvious to more voters during the primary. One thing I have always contended is that you can't change anything if you can't get elected in the first place and I honestly believe that we had two potentially "tranformational" politicians running at the same time. I believe that if they can work together it will be even better for the public.
My only remaining gripe is that the campaign run by Axelrod against Sen. Clinton was unnecessarily vicious and dishonest. I'm willing to give Obama the benefit of a doubt, but how he treats Sen. Clinton will be the final deciding point.
I'm thinking McClellan is testifying today to divert attention from the FISA vote which I believe is scheduled. Which story gets the headline on the evening news?
On behalf of my candidate I say Thank You! Well said and heart felt and eloquent as only you can express.
I have no doubt that these two have devoped a devotion for each other. I saw it increasingly during the campaign and I bet we see it again, now that things are calming down.
YOu can if you want! I am leaving my final assesment for after the election.
I know I've said this before, but I really beleive there is some under current of extortion in Congress. there is something that is tying their hands...So many HUGE EGOs are silent.

I think they are required to agree on everything. By the Party. Otherwise, they are shunned.
Posted by: chloe | June 20, 2008 10:25 AM
To a certain extent, yes. Many bills are strong armed the party way. But the overall look of this. The DEM's were supposed to be the heroes when they got majority.
With the Republican's that should have started voting with the Dems to save their asses with their constituents and they DIDn't?
Pelosi in her right mind should have wanted to seem all powerful and MURTHA has been silent too.
There are just a lot of markers for something going on behind the scenes....
jamie......but her hair has become much much harder over the years.......she doesnt have to wear a hardhat when she panders at construction sites now.......
I agree with Sheila on This one. There is simply no reason for the Democrats to cave so visibly or for some of the major respected power brokers such as Feinstein to quitely vote as expected.
Something is going on and I have a major feeling there will be a lot of books written about this last year in the Bush presidency. He is worse than a lame duck. He is a dead duck with everyone waiting for the body to be removed. Handing him all these legislative victories doesn't make sense.
ET , there was a story behind the Rick Astley video. There is an internet phenomenom about it. Supposedly , you send someone a link , but you tell them it is something else. When they clink on the link you send them they are led to the Rick Astley video for "Never Gonna Give You Up". LOL! They call it being "Rick-Rolled". Apparently some political blogs said they had the elusive Michelle Obama "Whitey" video and posted a link to it. When people clicked on the link they were led to the Rick Astley video. Hence , they were "Rick-Rolled"
They said Obama was looking at Edwards as a possible VP. I thought Edwards had already said he didn't want to be VP? If Obama is about change isn't picking a former VP candidate not really change?
(1) Edwards said that to deflect attention away from Veep. he still may.
(2) No politician with an ounce of sense would say anything to give the paparazzi a reason to bug them.
They said Obama was looking at Edwards as a possible VP.... If Obama is about change isn't picking a former VP candidate not really change?Posted by: Corey | June 20, 2008 10:48 AM
I don't know Corey.
But they sure looked good on that stage together when Edwards endorsed.
I think he almost has to pick one of the people who ran against him. None of the others mentioned from elsewhere really carry any impact. They all just come across as rather wimpy.
It may sound strange, but I think because he is so new to the national scene and virtually unknown internationally, that he almost needs a Co-Star to sell the movie. Clinton, Edwards, and Biden come to mind. If it isn't Clinton I would really like to see Biden. Either would carry a lot of International credit.
Oooh, The New Politics
I am so excited by Barack Obama's new politics. Like Chris Matthews, I got a thrill down my leg when the senator announced his candidacy promising a "new kind of politics." As I recall, he said, "Our leaders in Washington seem incapable of working together in a practical, commonsense way. Politics has become so bitter and partisan, so gummed up by money and influence, that we can't tackle the big problems that demand solutions. And that's what we have to change first." Goosebumps!
It’s the first MTP show following Russert’s death (other than the retrospective / memorial piece last week) and Joe Biden is the guest.
Any one else suspect this is his major audition for the VP post. It’s hard for me to believe this is coincidental. Biden is the name the Washington insiders have been hearing for more than a week, and I think that’s why they went after him for MTP. I know he likes medial attention, but I don’t see any real reason for Biden to go on unless he WANTS the VP post and sees this as his opportunity to convince BO and others that he’s the best choice.
I suspect that the Dem leaders think that the more successful bush is, the bigger the reaction will be in November.
Such a cynical policy would not do Ried, Polosi, or the Party credit. However, I can't think of any other rational explanation for this co-operation with the forces of evil.
Good for him for not making taxpayers fund his campaign. He may have flip-flopped, and explained the flip-flop dishonestly—that's why I'm not giving him a third cheer—but he ended up in the right place. "
MoveOn's decision, which will dramatically impact the way it raises money on Obama's behalf, is yet another sign of how rapidly Obama is taking control of the apparatus that's gearing up on his behalf.
By shuttering its 527, MoveOn is effectively killing its ability to raise money in huge chunks from labor unions, foundations, and big donors who would give over $5,000. The decision doesn't mean MoveOn will stop spending on Obama's behalf. Instead it will raise money exclusively with its political action committee, whose average donation is below $50 and will even be raising money with things like bake sales starting this weekend.
He's not going to honor his "promise" to stick to the $85 mil Public Financing.
McCain is. Hell...Obama already has a "Read My Lips..." thing going. Very disappointing. We need an honest candidate. What's going on with this ? anybody know? Why did he make the "promise " to use only Public Financing at all?
Sorry to say, that is never going to happen in politics....the best you can hope for is someone will will do the right thing when it comes to the big decisions. . .and you can not even expect that 100% of the time.
McCain is. Hell...Obama already has a "Read My Lips..." thing going. Very disappointing. We need an honest candidate. What's going on with this ? anybody know? Why did he make the "promise " to use only Public Financing at all?
Posted by: Dexter | June 20, 2008 12:51 PM
Because even Obama could not have predicted the windfall of this campaign and the realisation that the 50 State Strategy might be possible.
McCain promised he would not use 527's either and he is allowing them and not condeming.
Would you stop the small doners and have the money coming from the DNC which is in fact, by and large broke?
My first response to McCaskill was that she looked as if she was bagging kittens for a swift trip to the river. That is still the way she comes across.
Standing too close could get you a knife in the back. There is something about her that sets off my Ow-ooh-gah sirens. Pelosi looks practically benign by comparison.
chloe - BO got no bounce when Edwards endorsed him. They do "look" good together, but let's hope that's not how people actually vote. BO is gonna have to go with somebody with military/foreign policy experience.
Still, he will actually have to prove that he has something substantial and positive to offer; somebody more well-equipped for the job, perhaps.
tiptoe - Nice post.
Craig Crawford - Please do NOT play ball on the stairs! We'd like to keep you in one piece for awhile.
Pug, I lived in MN during those silly 'ventura' days.
The big thing james janos (dba jesse ventura) did as governor was get the legislature to lower the license tab fees for expensive jesse ventura type cars. Four years of non-stop hoopla only produced cheaper tabs for Porsches and Bentleys.
Two weeks after he took office janos made himself a lame duck by saying in a playboy interview,
"Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for the weak-minded", and that his highest aspiration was to be a 38 DD bra. The former was impolitic, but the latter was disgraceful.
Later, janos pushed for the legalization of prostitution, claiming he had ho'd once, himself, and that it was good. By that time no one would listen to him anymore.
janos wined, dined, and provided a king-sized bunk at the Gov's mansion for several months (at taxpayer and Foundation expense) for the relative of some obscure Hollywood tv type, who it turned out was not actually related to any Hollywood types, obscure or otherwise.
If janos (the first MN governor ever to operate under an alias) could get as much as 10% of the vote, it would be a miracle.
The repuggs without 527's are like fish out of water.
But, gee, why did so many people believe the SwiftBoaters's crap in first place?
Casting Kerry as a liar while Bush was exempted from going to war with his status in the inactive military was quite a feat...but how did they get the public to ever believe it?
Kerry was too above-the-fray to just slug it out with the repugg lying machine...I think he thought the great American populace would itself condemn the ridiculous claims about Kerry's Vietnam service. They made it seem that going up and down those rivers in Vietnam was a picnic. HA!! It was the most dangerous US Navy ops in the entire war...sitting ducks on a small watercraft...but...people believe what they will....those swiftboat crews and the helicpoter crews had our deep respect while I was in VN....
Lard - Nice thought, but I think if BO said we were ending the "war on terror" it would make him seem even softer.
It's a good idea to move toward peace, toward stability instead of putting forth the idea that we need to be in conflict with someone/thing.
It would be wonderful if people would accept doing that. BO would have to have a detailed plan of how to bring about peace and stability if he made such a claim. To date, he hasn't really been able to communicate details about much of anything to some of us.
If you love the music of Bob Dylan, see, rent or buy "I'm Not There". There is no way to explain the movie other than that it is a cryptic as some of his lyrics slipping back and forth from black and white to color and from one time period to another while using dialogue from much of the Dylan interviews.
It helps if your brain is permanently wired on strange, but the music and Cate Blanchette are worth the price.
Do a double feature with "Across The Universe" featuring the Beatles music and you may never be the same again. : )
it is still too early to discuss plans in detail, which the opposition will only rip to shreds between now and Nov.
That is one reason why every vp between Van Buren and oldbush (and Al Gore) lost - they inherited detailed plans that were well-known to their opponents. Premature disclosure of plans may also have been a contributing factor in the defeat of Gov. Dukakis.
This isn't fussing for a fight, just a bit of curiosity. Has anyone seen more than one picture of Sen. Obama with his mother?. The latest commercial has the single photo when he is a baby.
"Any thoughts? Would it help or hurt Obama to explicitly declare War on the War On Terror? "
Lard....I'm with you on the "War on Terror" rhetoric...and would LOVE Obama coming out with some honest criticism of the "concept." But for his own political good, I think he should not.
Jamie- here is a comprehensive article about Barack's mom- good to read especially after the discussion here this week about mother's effects on their sons.
...and the AMC Gremlin was ridiculed by all except the Gremlin Fan Club. Now, it's easy to see where the Toyota Matrix got its design from...the AMC Gremlin.
bama takes MySpace page from backer

WASHINGTON - Is MySpace always mine or can it belong to someone else? At the cost of losing 160,000 friends, Democrat Barack Obama's presidential campaign has taken over control of the MySpace page listed under his name on the popular social networking site.
That was long ago. I am active on MySpace and I remember when it occurred. Barack Obama wanted to use his own name for his run for the Presidency. It wasn't anything nefarious or heavy handed I think. The person who ran that MySpace could have created a MySpace name different such as "Fans of Barack" or maybe "Obama Supporters United"
I don't think this particular story is really worth anything.
Friends don't let friends vote a straight ticket

He was and is a doofus. But one thing I liked about Jesse was the bumber stickers seen around Minnesota that read "my Governor can beat up Your Governor" :-)
Dexter, I saw a Gremlin going through town a few months back. It had flames airbrushed on the sides, & a devil's head on the back windshield. That car was Hot!
remember the other day when we were talking about the Gov Mansion in Austin and the fact that it burned? Turns out I read today that most of the security sensors around the outside of the grounds were covered with construction materials or rubble. 7 of the 12 security cameras were inoperative and the manpower from the Texas Dept of Safety was short by half. Texas Dept of Safety is the Highway Patrol in Tx and is the starting spot if you want to be a Texas Ranger. And on top of all that if that is not enough, there was no insurance on the building so now the people of Texas have to pay for it. Rick Perry is a fine steward of the stuff in Texas.
What a dumbass this Gerson guy is... He has a column about Barack Obama that proclaims "he's really a LIBERAL"...
OH HORRORS...
I can't remember when "liberal" became such a demonized word precisely, but I think it was during the 1980 Reagan campaign(?)... The problem with "liberals" is that they have traditionally ignored such attacks by following their own values that the criticism is free speech and an open and free society can withstand it. Liberals were and are too understanding when under attack (which has also hurt the Democratic Party). Rahm Emmanuel's battles with Republicans in 2006 showed how Democrats could stand up and win by throwing the sh*t right back at the Repugs and their supposed "conservative" allies.
It's time to reclaim the word "LIBERAL". It is not a bad word.
I grew up a DFL'er in MInnesota, and my Grandfather was a staunch Democrat in the liberal tradition. I am still a Roosevelt/Humphrey Democrat at heart.
I am all for LIBERALS... the ones who stand on principle, fight the good fight for societal betterment, and the ones who toss the crap back at the "CONSERVATIVES" who used to brand them as the scariest thing around until 9/11.
One follow up on the LIBERAL moniker from Wikipedia:
John F. Kennedy defined liberalism this way:
"If by a 'Liberal' they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people — their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties — someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a 'Liberal,' then I'm proud to say I'm a 'Liberal.'[3]
Modern American liberalism is largely a combination of social liberalism, social progressivism, and mixed economy philosophy. It is distinguished from classic liberalism and libertarianism, which also claim freedom as their primary goal, in its insistence upon the inclusion of positive rights and in a broader definition of equality. Modern American liberals view the concentration of wealth and the destruction of the environment as threats to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. While the development of modern American liberalism may be traced to the late 19th and early 20th century, it may also be viewed as the modern version of the classical liberalism upon which America was founded.[1] Following the Great Depression, it became the dominant ideology in the U.S., until the late 1970s. Today, it remains powerful, but continues to be challenged by the re-emergence of laissez-faire ideology.[4]"
Looking at the mess we've found ourselves in since Reagan up to the current disaster squatting at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, one would think the Repugs would hang their heads in shame at their constant attempts to demonize liberalism's goals and successes.
I can't agree with you more. Even Reagan didn't intend the evil he incarnated. If I were him, I'd be rolling over in my grave at the evil made in his name.
"If you waste your time a-talkin' to the people who don't listen,
"To the things that you are sayin', who do you think's gonna hear.
"And if you should die explainin' how the things that they complain about,
"Are things they could be changin', who do you think's gonna care?"
I saw this morning on shakesville that MSNBC had to pull a Hardball promo because of sexist content-this time directed against Michelle Obama.
The part I liked best was when the author compared MSNBC to the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation. You know, the people who will be the first against the wall when the revolution occurs.
Just came across a Kris Kristofferson song that I hadn't heard before. If I didn't know better, I would think he got the chorus here. : ) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeBb-gTjWKA

GREAT song". Never heard it either. Thanks for the link.
"...The decision doesn't mean MoveOn will stop spending on Obama's behalf. Instead it will raise money exclusively with its political action committee..."
Which means, Mr Obama won't be taking PAC money, instead he will have a PAC raising and spending money on his behalf. Now ain't that something. Change you can believe in. Wow.
HI all.. just running through on my way to a meeting. I think Obama's on the right track when he talks of terrorists as criminals. War on Terror sounded great to reps, but no one ever answered the questions about how do you know you've won? when is it over? etc. Making the point that it is CRIMINALS you're after is what most of us have thought about for a long time.

Hillary will return to Hill next week
After two weeks laying low after suspending her presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton will return to the Senate next week for a series of Capitol Hill and campaign events.
The details have not been released about her schedule, but a Senate Democratic aide confirmed to Politico that Clinton will have a significant event in the Senate next week, followed by a meeting Thursday with Barack Obama's campaign finance team. Clinton will top off her re-emergence with a major campaign event Friday with Obama, at a location that still remains secret. http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/
"I have it from two solid, reliable sources–two individuals who are well known and respected in Washington circles–that Michelle Obama won’t be the only member of the Obama family featured in 527 ads come the fall. Looks like Barack has his share of “star” moments awaiting. Seems that Barack did not appreciate during trips to Africa and Israel that there is a thing know among intelligence professionals as “hostile” intelligence services. Apparently Barack did not understand that Vegas rules did not apply (you know, what goes on in Vegas stays in Vegas)."
Don't you understand that phrases such as that are absolutely in the rhetorical mode of Joe McCarthy at the height of his powers? Is that who you really want to be associated with on this blog?
Also, would you please state what your political agenda is? Are you a Dem or a Republican? Are you for McCain? Are you hoping Barack blows up and Hillary gets back in? Were you ever really for Hillary?
What is the deal with you? I think as much as you post here, you owe the rest of the community at least that much of an explanation.
Okay. So you are truly for Hillary then. Which means that presumably you are a Democrat.
That's a good start. So why would you want to associate yourself with so enthusiastically with a guy who is basically using McCarthyesque tactics and rhetoric? I can't imagine Hillary ever approving of such tactics.
By the way GORDO, I enjoy you as a mysterious character on this blog and often find amusement in your posts. I know I've poked fun at you about circling the Earth in your spaceship and just beaming down these links to us. I don't find that you are rude or overbearing. So please do not construe my questions as any kind of attack on you.

My Pandora has John and June on it. And if you haven't created your own radio station on Pandora, get busy or just search Pandora for "webthings" and listen to Eclectic R Us that is my everything in the pot station, or for the standards I love go to Piano Bar.
None of this matters if there are no videos. I hope Larry Johnson is working with the Clinton campaign and they have the MO and BO videos. The anti-McCain Repub billionaire story could be used as "cover" so as to not leave any Clinton "fingerprints".
Do you understand what was done to the Clintons (and their supporters) by the DNC and MSM? Hillary has every right to take Obama down anyway she can.
Chloe...I've been trying to lighten up for years. But you know how tough those pounds are to shed.
Anyway, the whole thing about McCarthy is that he made sense, sounded in-the-know and pulled millions of Americans along for the ride when he was at his peak. But once he was exposed as a fraud, everyone wondered how they had been suckered in like that -- and anyone associated with him or his tactics was considered an embarrassment to everything America is supposed to stand for.
I just don't want the same thing to happen to GORDO because of this "noquarter" guy, who sounds to me like a complete jackal and buffoon.
I had a '60 Rambler. Not great, but not awful. Fiat is awful. Fiat is the bushmccain of automobiles. They come pre-junked, right off the shelf.
gerson is all 1/2 truths and innuendo. He tries and fails to make the Son of Cain seem like a mighty tower of courage and sagacity, rather than a sick and confused old fascist hack trying to wheedle us into giving his wife yet another tax break.
"Do you understand what was done to the Clintons (and their supporters) by the DNC and MSM? Hillary has every right to take Obama down anyway she can."
GORDO, maybe so -- in a world that has sunk to the depths of cynical depravity, pure gamesmanship and sensless made-for-cable theatrics. But in a more pragmatic world -- where people act in their own best interested unclouded by emotion? Not so much. As a Hillary supporter, I believe that she operates in the latter world. The idea of Hillary wanting to "take Obama down" is like a subplot from "Mean Girls" or something. Meaning it's not very sophisticated or thoughtful analysis.
Even if she hates his guts, what good would it do her for him to lose the general election. And if the "Holy Grail Tape" leaks before the convention, it would absolutely have her fingerprints on it -- so it would sort of defeat the purpose.
I think Katrina gave us another one of those magic moments as a third of the nation suddenly awoke and exclaimed, "How could I have believed all their lies?"
Don't ever listen to anyone who says the Palestinians have Obama's heart, or even his ear.
Google the recent AIPAC speech that Obama gave. Older pundits agreed it is the MOST PRO-ISRAEL SPEECH ever given by a candidate or a president of the US.
If you support Israel 100%, like so many Americans do, Obama is your man.
He has never given one word of support to a Palestinian point of view.
And that's the facts. Even hardcore Zionists are urging Obama to tone it down!
Nick, during a moment of financial embarrassment in the early 1970s, I succumbed to the lure of a low price tag. 850 Idromat. It was like driving the Viet Nam War to work and back. Since then, I have met a score or so of other Fiat owners and former Fiat owners. With one notable exception, we all thought our cars were the worst cars we ever owned. The one exception loved to work on cars, and his Fiats (yes, several!) gave him plenty to tinker with. The others I mentioned owned everything from the little spyder 850 to the 4 door sedans. The dates ran up to the mid-80s. I stopped seeing Fiats when I started seeing Yugos (= bait and switch)
That is my sad tale of woe. Now I have to feed my wife.
'Bye
The reason I find all this about BO and MO so believable is because nothing is "out of character". Just how much non - MSM research have most of you done? Probably not much. What many fail to understand is that the MSM is a world of mirrors, shadows, smoke and fog. Sometimes the "truth" can only be found in the alternative media - "tin-foil world".
Been at the neighbors across the street and next door. How's that for research? The neighbors I talked with all think the Os are sweet and kind, bright and thoughtful.
And, yes, some people in the Obama campaign said horrible and unjust things about Senator Clinton. Some got canned and some didn't. The same can be said in reverse. Both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama are admirable, capable, and sound. I would be happy to vote for either of them. Btw, I was for Edwards very early.
Now I really have to run, or my sweetie will starve, poor kid.
You know folks, there's something vaguely menacing about Craig in the freeze frame from the "bounce" video at the top of the thread. Take a look: The head cocked back, the knitted brow and raised eyebrows over narrowly lidded eyes. Hands vaguely coming together behind the "Play Video" button as if he's cracking his knuckles. The whole urban-back-alley setting. He kinda looks like a West Side Story thug getting ready to throw down. Man, Craig's a BADASS!

Nick,
Me too! I used to love it when he went after Bush and would rant and rave. And I laughed and agreed. Then he turned it on Hillary, and it wasn't funny anymore. Now I can't stand the guy.
That's when I found out that all that mean stuff if really fun to watch when you agree with it, but when it turns against you, it's a whole different story. This election has really changed the way I look at things.
I don't quite understand what people with one son do with that square footage. I worked on a project with a guy who told me he'd changed his lifestyle, that he'd never again buy a home where his kid lived in a different zip code.
Hey Nick...I cannot claim the "omentum" credit....you have Dr. Oz to thank for that!!!!

Good morning... I have just read an article about this man who has put up an Obama attack site... http://ExposeObama.com/
"Ready to Attack Obama, if Some Money Arrives
By Michael Luo
New York Times
UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — A Bible verse taped to a whiteboard in Floyd Brown’s office that he uses to track his efforts to attack Senator Barack Obama reads, “That is why for Christ’s sake I delight in weakness, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.”
Mr. Brown, 47, a 6-foot-6 bear of a man is perhaps best known for his involvement with the Willie Horton television advertisement that helped sink Michael S. Dukakis’s candidacy in 1988..."
This Mr. Brown calls himself a CHRISTIAN??? This sort of crap is one of the reasons I soured so much on politics and (among other reasons) decided to move to Europe. But as the old adage goes, "you can take the boy out of America, but you can't take America out of the boy". (adapted for this post).
What I mean to say is that I still care about my country, I still vote... I still hold frustration at what it has become and still hope what it can again be.
Mr. Brown has made it CLEAR to me -- my idea of writing in Hillary's name, while maybe nice for me, and others who do it, does not advance our country or our cause. Mr. Brown's hate has made me convinced that the only SANE thing to do is to vote for Barack Obama and that's what I am going to do.
Brown's style of hate and attack is what is going too far !!
"Let us summarize the Obama campaign strategy: when one is poised to lose, drop the race card, but be sure to claim your opponents are the ones who are divisive, even if you are the one who disenfranchised the voters to whom you are appealing for funds. Always eschew any and all discussions on policy, and always refer to your opponents as racist and xenophobic. This is Obama’s version of unity, and this is Obama’s notion of waging a different type of political campaign."
I went to RIT too. School of printing. When were you there? Kodak is pretty much out of the film business, and now days nobody can discharage untreated wastewater into rivers or sewer systems. Between the EPA and the state environmental agencys this is strictly enforced. Huge fines if you get caught.
The media keeps tossing out the 1 August date as when Mrs Clinton must have the cash to repay her campaign debt. If, at that point in time, she simply pays the entire debt from her pocket and leaves the campaign debt free, is there any reason why after that date people cannot simply give Mrs Clinton personal gifts to help her recover her personal losses?
Oh, the reason I asked the campaign debt question is that I absolutely abhor the way in which she is being held hostage by Mr Obama in order to gain her support for his campaign.
According to the rules as I remember them, She is required to have it paid off before is becomes her debt. AND not only just her people but Obama's people to pat the dept too. Supposed to force them to fund raise together.
After that, you can't give her personal monies. It will either go into her re-election fund or the DNC fund. If she doesn't have a relection fund set up(I'm sure she does), the money will go to the DNC.
"After that, you can't give her personal monies. It will either go into her re-election fund or the DNC fund. If she doesn't have a relection fund set up(I'm sure she does), the money will go to the DNC. "
Flatus -- I'd email and ask her campaign. Let's not send a dime to the corrupt DNC.
Just noticed that Dollar-Bill Jefferson is running for re-election. I guess it shouldn't surprise me. When I moved to Tennessee from Colorado I was stunned to see a man re-elected from his jail cell. Since that time I've grown used to BS.
There is technically no deadline for Mrs. Clinton to pay back her creditors, but because of a clause in the McCain-Feingold campaign finance measure that was intended to limit the ability of candidates to self-finance campaigns, she has until the convention in August to pay herself back. After that, the most she could recover is $250,000.
Obama Campaign Open to Helping Clinton Pay Off $20 Million Debt
Bloomberg - Barack Obama's campaign is open to paying off some of the more than $20 million in debt accrued by defeated rival Hillary Clinton, a top adviser said. ...Obviously we want to help each other.''
McCain's Law
The rule banning Clinton from paying herself back after the nominating convention is part of a 2002 campaign-finance law co- sponsored by Obama's Republican rival for the presidency, Senator John McCain of Arizona. The law had several provisions to make it more difficult for people to finance their own campaigns.
It took John Glenn 20 years to resolve the debt from his presidential campaign and it only happened when the FEC allowed part of the debt to be forgiven.
The Obama/media obsesession with the Clinton debt is unnatural. A lot of the issues will remain unresolved unti there is a new administration and the FEC has full membership. Currently the FEC cannot act because it does not have a quorum.
After reading Sheila's link in her 8:59 AM comment, I would transfer GE contributions to her Senate fund then pay from that. She should be able to get enough of those contributors to redesignate their contributions to allow her to immediately payoff any vendors currently not paid.
PATSI, I agree with you about keeping the DNC's grubby hands away from any of our cash.
Me three on no money to the DNC until they clean up their act. I'll give directly to a candidate, but not one one dime to what I consider little better than a vote stealing criminal enterprise.
Nothing particular Jamie, just something not too edgy. Just got through cutting the grass. Skipped the trimming this week so I finished an hour and a half earlier than usual. Will be headed to the shower shortly.

Obama raised money through "small donors" a lot of them students with no outside income. If their parents gave them the money isn't this a violation, especially if the parents are maxed out donors.
As Campaigns Chafe at Limits, Donors Might Be in Diapers
By Matthew Mosk
Washington Post Staff Writer

Elrick Williams's toddler niece Carlyn may be one of the youngest contributors to this year's presidential campaign. The 2-year-old gave $2,300 to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).
So did her sister and brother, Imara, 13, and Ishmael, 9, and her cousins Chan and Alexis, both 13. Altogether, according to newly released campaign finance reports, the extended family of Williams, a wealthy Chicago financier, handed over nearly a dozen checks in March for the maximum allowed under federal law to Obama.
Such campaign donations from young children would almost certainly run afoul of campaign finance regulations, several campaign lawyers said. But as bundlers seek to raise higher and higher sums for presidential contenders this year, the number who are turning to checks from underage givers appears to be on the rise. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/23/AR2007102301882_pf.html
I believe all members of the same family can give the maximum amount as long as they are of an age to vote. It is illegal for an employer to URGE employees to donate or to reimburse employees who do so, though that can sometimes be hard to prove.
Oh, the reason I asked the campaign debt question is that I absolutely abhor the way in which she is being held hostage by Mr Obama in order to gain her support for his campaign.
Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | June 21, 2008 7:37 AM
Clinton is not being held hostage by Obama. Saying that is tantamount to saying the Clinton campaign made a huge tactical blunder in allowing it via the debt.
By cooperating Clinton and Obama are doing what is in each other's political self interest.
If Obama doesn't help Clinton retire her debt, he'll be seen as petty and divisive, costing him votes and money from Clinton backers. If Clinton doesn't campaign actively for Obama she'll be seen as petty and divisive, jeopardizing her future political ambitions and the ability to retire her debt.
KGC: Sorry you're not feeling well. Happy almost birthday. My birthday is today, as it happens.
The laws regarding donations by children and parents are rather complex. In general, an adult child with a source of income (even if it's a trust account funded by the family) is treated as an individual donor.
However, as someone pointed out, given that the FEC has so few members that a quorum cannot be assembled, such low-level violations, if they existed, would not come to light for quite some time and I don't know that there are any real penalties attached.
Jamie: Theme from a Summer Place? I have to chuckle ... I seem to recall that that song was on the Hit Parade for more than a year. No one in the world who was alive at the time will ever forget that melody.
Thanks for the wishes and info
Flatus -I'm only unhappy about the birthday because bing sick cuts into my various party time. I was going into SF today but now I have to stay home and sulk.

GORDO, have you EVER posted anything positive about Barack Obama?
Posted by: EuroTom | June 21, 2008 10:42 AM
Good Morning Tom,
There's always someone who feels too much danger where there is none. Problem is, will this fear of the unknown cause illness or worse? Sometimes ya just gotta lighten up.
One doesn't have to be drunk on alcohol to exhibits identifiable behavior patterns, as those listed below, that one is indeed drunk on something. It is obvious BHO is drunk on himself.
THE FIVE STAGES OF DRUNKENNESS
Stage #1 -- Smart This is when you suddenly become an expert on every subject. You know all and greatly wish to express this knowledge to anyone who will listen. At this stage you are also always right. And of course the person you are talking with is very wrong. You will talk for hours trying to convince someone that you are right. This makes for an interesting argument when both parties are "smart". Two people talking, in fact, arguing about a subject neither one really knows anything about, but are convinced that they are they complete authority on the subject makes for great entertainment for those get the opportunity to listen in.
Stage #2 -- Handsome/Pretty This is when you are convinced that you are the best looking person in the entire room and everyone is looking at you. You begin to wink at perfect strangers and ask them to dance because of course they had been admiring you the whole evening. You are the center of attention, and all eyes are directed at you because you are the most beautiful thing on the face of the earth. Now keep in mind that you are still smart, so you can talk to this person who has been admiring you about any and all subjects under the sun.
Stage #3 -- Rich This is when you suddenly become the richest person in the world. You can buy drinks for the entire bar and put it on your bill because you surely have an armored truck full of your money parked behind the bar. You can also make bets in this stage. Now of course you still know all, so you will always win all your bets. And you have no concern for how much money you bet because you have all the money in the world. You will also begin to buy drinks for all the people in the bar who are admiring you because you are now the smartest, prettiest, and richest person on the face of the earth.
Stage #4 -- Bulletproof You can now pick fights with the people you have been betting money with because you cannot be hurt by anything. At this point you would go up to the boyfriend of the woman who had been admiring your beautiful self all evening and challenge him to a battle of wits for money. You have no worry about losing this battle of wits because you know all, have all the money to cover this bet, and you obviously win a fight that might erupt if he looses.
Stage #5 -- Invisible This is the final stage of drunkenness. At this point you can do absolutely anything because no one can see you. You can get up and dance on a table; you can strip down to your underwear, to impress the people who have been admiring you all evening, because the rest of the people in the room cannot see you. You are also invisible to the person whom you have picked a fight with earlier in the evening. You can walk through the streets singing at the top of your lungs (because of course you are still smart and know the tune perfectly) and no one will think anything of it because they can't see you. All your social inhibitions are gone. You can do anything, because no one will know. And you certainly won't remember !
"GORDO, have you EVER posted anything positive about Barack Obama? "
Tom -- I don't think Gordo has even posted positive things about Hillary. He casts her as someone saving up trash to throw when it's too late to change the election. Basically, he's calling her dumb as a box of rocks.
"He casts her as someone saving up trash to throw when it's too late to change the election. Basically, he's calling her dumb as a box of rocks."
Are there damaging videos of MO and BO? If so, does Team Clinton have them and when did they get them? Was it late in the Primary season? MO, according to Time, was asked about this by an aide in April. NQ reported on it in mid-May. This sort of thing can't just be dumped into MSM. The timing and how it's done are critical.
The claim is that the Repubs have the videos. It helps to know the "history" of this rumor.

Greetings from the desert:
Craig, don't go too crazy following the bouncing ball and the bouncing polls between now and November. Like I've said, the national polls don't mean a great deal as it's the state polls, especially in the so-called swing states, that are worth watching. Newsweek says at least one reliable pollster says the electoral college would end up in a tie, 269-269, if the election were held today. I don't quite buy that but I'm not a professional pollster, only a polling consumer for the past forty years or so. My understanding of the data is that Obama will win, 290-252. But, it could be closer depending on events between now and November. Have a great day everyone.

As far as Obama's good favorability rating - we learned months ago that the less people know about a candidate, the higher his/her favorability rating. Thus, Obama's high favorability rating - we know tragically little about this out-of-his-league candidate.

WHAT HAVE I BEEN THINKING??????
Or what was I thinking???????
Books to read?
Happy books to you.

WASHINGTON - Is MySpace always mine or can it belong to someone else? At the cost of losing 160,000 friends, Democrat Barack Obama's presidential campaign has taken over control of the MySpace page listed under his name on the popular social networking site.

Fundamentalists have taken over both parties.

Thanks for the link, KGC. How timely.

Whether or not he will end up going down in history as someone whose machinations finally led to better conditions for the people of the US is a matter that will have to wait, but don't for a single second think that any of the high flown phrases mean a damn thing from any of them. They are what they are: Political animals and political animals bite.

Well Nick and Patsi,
The proposed 50 state strategy lives under the present campaign financing for Obama and the DEMS. This present phenomena of small donors lends an opportunity that will not come again in this age.
I say the Obama/Clinton and DNC finance teams are working to expand our reach for a long time to come and this is the best chance scenario.
I say let the rest of us who have donated our $50 for this month, help all of you too.

Jamie,

Sheila,
I actually like him a little better this way ... clay feet and all.

Economy is in a swift downward sprial and we've known it for at least a couple of years.
I mean, can it be any more crazy? and all told, there are no heroes in congress? No one that wants to be the hero?

Somebody catch me, I may swoon.

Hmmmmm.

Exclusive: MoveOn To Close Its 527 In Response To Obama's Candidacy
http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/06/moveon_to_close_its_527.php

Because even Obama could not have predicted the windfall of this campaign and the realisation that the 50 State Strategy might be possible.
McCain promised he would not use 527's either and he is allowing them and not condeming.

Peace.

Dukakis.

bama takes MySpace page from backer
updated 12:11 p.m. CT, Thurs., May. 3, 2007
WASHINGTON - Is MySpace always mine or can it belong to someone else? At the cost of losing 160,000 friends, Democrat Barack Obama's presidential campaign has taken over control of the MySpace page listed under his name on the popular social networking site.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18466315/from/RS.3/
Posted by: tictac | June 20, 2008 7:24 AM
That was long ago. I am active on MySpace and I remember when it occurred. Barack Obama wanted to use his own name for his run for the Presidency. It wasn't anything nefarious or heavy handed I think. The person who ran that MySpace could have created a MySpace name different such as "Fans of Barack" or maybe "Obama Supporters United"
I don't think this particular story is really worth anything.

Patsi,
remember the other day when we were talking about the Gov Mansion in Austin and the fact that it burned?

It is not a bad word.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_American_liberalism
I grew up a DFL'er in MInnesota, and my Grandfather was a staunch Democrat in the liberal tradition. I am still a Roosevelt/Humphrey Democrat at heart.
I am all for LIBERALS... the ones who stand on principle, fight the good fight for societal betterment, and the ones who toss the crap back at the "CONSERVATIVES" who used to brand them as the scariest thing around until 9/11.
Posted by: EuroTom
| June 20, 2008 3:47 PM

From Sheila's 12:39 PM:

Other Videos with Barack

None of this matters if there are no videos. I hope Larry Johnson is working with the Clinton campaign and they have the MO and BO videos. The anti-McCain Repub billionaire story could be used as "cover" so as to not leave any Clinton "fingerprints".

Posted by: GORDO | June 20, 2008 6:17 PM
Gordo,
Been at the neighbors across the street and next door.

Okay, everyone -- for the Summer Solstice --- how about we talk about our favorite movies about politics?
Right now I'm watching TCM, which is televising "The Best Man" with Henry Fonda and Cliff Robertson.

It's a good movie, but I still think my faves are "Being There" "All the President's Men" and "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington."

Does anyone have any experience with Mr Slim? I'm not asking for personal secrets - I mean an air conditioner which is hung on a wall and does not need to be vented.

Anyway I LOVE the story re KO and Tweety fighting over MYP. Oh, I hope it's true. I think that's how they are really, behind the scenes. Tweety was not happy when he announced KO's expanded schedule which gave him 3 exposures to Tweety's two. Then Tweety tried to horn in on David Gregory's show and Dan Abrams. Maybe that's a key to the Stepford reporters they have on their shows.

Full article on NYTimes: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/21/us/politics/21ads.html?ref=politics

Obama’s Florida Strategy: DROP THE RACE CARD
"Let us summarize the Obama campaign strategy: when one is poised to lose, drop the race card, but be sure to claim your opponents are the ones who are divisive, even if you are the one who disenfranchised the voters to whom you are appealing for funds. Always eschew any and all discussions on policy, and always refer to your opponents as racist and xenophobic. This is Obama’s version of unity, and this is Obama’s notion of waging a different type of political campaign."

Question: Campaign debt.
Posted by: Flatus

Flatus,
According to the rules as I remember them, She is required to have it paid off before is becomes her debt.

Wednesday, October 24, 2007; A06
Elrick Williams's toddler niece Carlyn may be one of the youngest contributors to this year's presidential campaign.

I believe all members of the same family can give the maximum amount as long as they are of an age to vote. It is illegal for an employer to URGE employees to donate or to reimburse employees who do so, though that can sometimes be hard to prove.

Posted by: frank | June 21, 2008 10:19 AM
KGC: Sorry you're not feeling well. Happy almost birthday. My birthday is today, as it happens.
The laws regarding donations by children and parents are rather complex. In general, an adult child with a source of income (even if it's a trust account funded by the family) is treated as an individual donor.
However, as someone pointed out, given that the FEC has so few members that a quorum cannot be assembled, such low-level violations, if they existed, would not come to light for quite some time and I don't know that there are any real penalties attached.

Chloe, Sheila: Thank you both. As it happens, I have to leave directly as my daughter is taking me to breakfast -- later this afternoon my best gal pal and I are going to see what trouble we can still get in to ... probably not as much as we might have given that it's due to hit 103 around here today ... but we'll see.
I meant to chime in much earlier on the news of the day but I got so interested in reading all the posts that I lost track of time. And now, I have to go ... :-(

Patsi ---------------
"He casts her as someone saving up trash to throw when it's too late to change the election.
