  2. what a great map!

I'm calling Ohio 16 for the Democrats.
It will be the first time in over 50 years but I believe without a strong Republican incumbent it will be done.

Both current Rep Regular and his predecessor Frank T Bow (who looked just like the banker in Monopoly) enjoyed the full and complete support of the companies that made the area a company town. Those companies are gone and the financial support for Republicans is gone too.

The only thing that could be a problem is top of the ticket issues.

  9. People can always put up links to defend their asssertions on the issues. However , it depends on the sources they come from and whether or not people wanna believe those sources. You know , whether the sources are stating actual facts or just their opinion. Sorta like if I went to a Pro-Obama site and then listed 10 reasons why he should be our next President and tried to sway people here by posting that. Or if I went to an anti-Obama site and then listed 10 reasons why he shouldn't be our next President and tried to sway people here by posting that.

  27. Well, I've got the yard work done, despite over-the-top supervision by Stinky.

Sometime during the middle of the night I'm going to put a giant piece of pork in the monster smoker (an NBBD) in preparation for father's day. Son-in-law and grandson came over and prepped the wood for the 'happening'.

I'll probably light the fire around ten and by midnight it'll be ready. I'll have one of the security cameras focused on the smoker, so all I'll have to do is have the bedroom TV on channel 4 and I'll see how things are going.

Everything should be done around 1400 tomorrow. So, if any of you are in the neighborhood, just follow the smell. Thanks to Craig's new map we'll be easy to find; we're in SC-2.

  30. Blue,

Interesting comment about driving into ditches. I guess McCain would be better because he would blow up the road in front of him so that it was on par with the ditch Bush got us in right?

Since an Obama Presidency seems to be the first sign of the apocalypse, anyone know a good place to buy generators and other staples for survival. Since we are going to get over run by Mexicans and Iranians and I don't want to learn their languages, I want to get ready for a Red Dawn type campaign...

Since CQ has provided a shiny new map, do we have any viable ways to gamble on the results with actual cash?

What kind of smoker do you have? How do you regulate your temperature in there?

Posted by: Bear Author Profile Page | June 14, 2008 12:10 PM

  32. Mag,

Several AA I know say this, "Bush screwed up. Give the AA a chance. We have doubts too, but Obama can change. If he messes up, vote him out, but he has earned a chance to lead. America trusted Bush, why not let BO get a shot." And then I feel this discomfort that if I disagree, I am somehow racist because I voted for whites despite my doubts.

I try to explain the seriousness of my doubts and the kinds on nutcases Obama drwas to him. They laugh and repeat their words, adding that Obama isn't responsible for those loonies. They openly admit Obama had those friends to establish cred in Chicago, but think he will kick them to the curb come
    January.

I don't buy it. Why relocate to Chicago?

    Have to run....

    Posted by: Maxtrue | June 14, 2008 12:12 PM

  33. Bear your post is absurd. You claim McCain will blow up the ditch. You are just spouting unsupported characterizations.

No one said Obama would trigger a nuclear war. In fact, you suggest McCain will. I would say that Obama's failures may make us a mess and perhaps buy in bulk now can lower the cost of future goods once protectionism comes. And whe Obama/Pelosi sues OPEC prepare for rising gas prices.

Funny how you imply a disaster if McCain, but laugh at the idea of an Obama disaster. Just look at the problems "talking" and moderates in Pakistan are now causing. But no, these are previews to things a coming.......

And what credibility does Obama have carrying a big stick? Perhaps Wright was right. At the end of the day, Obama will say anything, yes?

  36. Bear, it's one of the New Braunfels Black Diamonds. They are no longer made. Very large, heavy gauge steel, separate heat and smoke chambers. Made for serious barbecuing.

Because the fire is in a separate chamber offset from where the meat is, flare-ups are not a problem. Air flow is controlled by small vents in the fire chamber door. There's also a damper on the chimney at the far end of the smoke chamber.

Have to start the fire a couple of hours early to let the bed of coals get right. I'll be using oak from trees I cut down myself on our own property. I also have some apple wood that'll be ready in a couple of years.

I'll try to achieve a fairly constant temperature of around 220-deg F. When it comes time to replenish the fire chamber, I'll have a batch of coals already prepared in a separate fire box.

It'll be ready when the internal temperature is at least 165-deg.

If you leave now, you can be here in time for the morning shift!

Bear, I have one of them. I hate it. Awkward to use and wears me out after a couple of branches. I have better luck using a pruning saw while standing on a ladder.

Now I do have an attachment that fits on my lawn trimmer--you know, the kind where you can mount different attachments like a blower, cultivator, edger, etc.

The attachment is a miniature chainsaw at the end of a four foot extension. It gives an effective reach of close to ten feet, more if you're on a ladder. It really works, and doesn't wear me out.

  48. This is my nonpowered saw. The rope works a loping shear on the back side of the saw. It is not needed to work the saw itself. but for small limbs the shear is easier than using the saw, as small limbs tend to bend back and forth with the motion of the saw. I keep the rope on mine because the usefulness of it out weights the getintheway pain inthe ass of it. One way to keep the rope out of the way is to wind it around the pole.

But, I have found one use for the saw. When the halyard for my flagpole comes off the pulley, I use the saw portion to nudge it back in place. It takes the saw, fully extended, a step ladder, and someone to hold the ladder and call 911 if grandpa falls off of it. Works like a champ.

  53. HW,
Yes, I tend to read post as a reflex so it is hard to ignore them. My comments towards Dog comes from numerous "facts" I have posted that go unanswered. For instance it is both a fact that Obama says he never suggested talking to Ahmadinejad and the fact he has long been blasted for such a position and refused to respond the way he did several weeks back when launching his new spin on foreign policy. I find it hard to take people claiming they stick to facts, while ignorng them. Obama pandered hard to AIPAC and decalred support of Israel's capital being unified. Then he retracted such a position as though he hasn't had plenty of time understanding that words matter and the issues involved in the Middle East.

I ask Dog to name a new domestic oil production facility that Obama supports. How is it honest to suggest new oil refineries to avoid a windfall tax while preventing new refineries in Congress? Why are all off coast oil sources off limits to the US companies but not to China? What possible sanity is suing OPEC violating US concepts of monopolies?

Few care to engage in factual discourse. Obama supporters don't even want to vet the facts that Edwards and Obama screwed Michigan an hour before the deadline to get Hillary. Nope, many ignore facts, so being a bit irrate about this isn't bad form, is it?

I posted a video on the last thread about the US strike that Pakistan claims was a US mistake. Thje Afghan rebels were clearly operating inside Pakistan with no nearby Pakistan outposts. Obama said he supports this kind of action this but offers not one shred of support to the military and Bush doing just what he advocated. This is foreign policy turned base politics. Gee,...how FDR, Truman, JFK and Reagan of Obama. And Richardson care to comment on the silly notion he predicted about moderates in Pakistan fighting terror? His position and that of Obama has lead to increased casualties for US forces. McCain will blast Obama for that. They are worse than Musharraf so far.

So until Obamaphiles care to discuss facts, those of us who don't support the new Messiah will bring up the fact abyss. Please explain how the new government in Pakistan isn't appeasing the Taliban and costing US lives. And if Obama supported this direction, then isn't he an appeaser enabler?

This happened 2days ago. Of course he hasn't commented and if he did what chance has there been to make the headlines with all the other news. That's crazy as usual.

  63. Nick, some of the legacy fruits and vegetables are truly superior to anything you can find in the store. Your delicious is probably one of those.

Of the common store fruits, I will buy Cameo when it's on sale. I also like Braeburn. Stinky likes Fuji best, but I prefer something a little more tart. Store bought Reds don't entice me.

South Carolina is excellent peach country--we grow more here than does Georgia. We had some excellent ones this week for 99 cents a pound. The birds always have first crack at ours.

You would like people here to engage you. It's near impossible.

You pop in here every once in a while with 10 different arguments(questions ) in one post and expect someone to comment. (dog's point noted) I have been critical of your style of posting from day 1. I think you may recall me being "rabid".

You don't do this at SF. They'd ostracize you there to.If you hoping for dialog please stick with one or two issues to conclusion. Until then, last many I skip your rants too.

  65. Max -- I don't see this recent Pakistan clusterf*** as being particularly relevant. First of all, I think Obama sometimes says merely what he thinks will go over. Secondly, he'll end up doing what Kerry, Daschle, Hart and the telecommunications boys tell him to do, anyway.

  68. I don't agree with a lot of what Tim Wise has to say in this opinionated article he wrote:

"An Open Letter to Certain White Women Who Are Threatening to Withhold Support from Obama in November

    Your Whiteness is Showing"

    http://www.counterpunch.org/wise06072008.html

Although I think he's one of the "suffers white guilt" crowd and here HE is lecturing white women who say they will support McCain in the Fall, there is a quote that has me thinking:

"Your threats are not about standing up for women. They are only about standing up for the feelings of white women, and more to the point, the aspirations of one white woman. So don't kid yourself. If you wanted to make a statement about the importance of supporting a woman, you wouldn't need to vote for John McCain, or stay home, thereby producing the same likely result--a defeat for Obama. You could always have said you were going to go out and vote for Cynthia McKinney. After all, she is a woman, running with the Green Party, and she's progressive, and she's a feminist"

  71. Following up on something Tim get's totally wrong in my book, he writes:

"How is it that you have managed to hold your nose all these years, just like a lot of us on the left, and vote for Democrats who we knew were horribly inadequate--Kerry, Gore, Clinton, Dukakis, right on down the uninspiring line--and yet, apparently can't bring yourself to vote for Barack Obama?"

The answer is simple... not all of us were holding our noses first of all, and in those races there was not a viable female candidate running. Tim's obliviousness to how women would view the DNC's actions, the MSM, and the sexism. The bias was too strong and the passions of NOW, Gloria Steinem (who said on TV the other day that we have to work hard to elect Barack Obama) and Maya Angelou made Hillary supporters really believe this was their turn.

And I believe if Hillary is not offered the VP slot, women will continue to back away in large numbers from the nominee. The sense of gender bias is too personal, just like racial bias is too personal for blacks.

I am tired.. will go to sleep soon.

    http://www.fueleconomy.gov/FEG/planning.shtml

Planning and combining trips, ride shares, car pooling, public transport.

In my opinion, high gas prices give us all the opportunity to reconnect with our friends, neighbours and family communally. Going together to do the shopping, and other errands will not only save gasoline but bring us closer together.

Anyway this is worth a read. The most important thing is that we all reduce our energy consumption, not just because of the prices, but also because of the effect on Spaceship Earth. It's always interesting to learn what happens on "bicycles only" days in Brussels. The air becomes incredibly cleaner in short order...

"The many marraiges between whites of Celtic ancestry in the South and AmerIndians (leading to both whites of some Indian ancestry and members of Indian nations, such as Cherokee chief John Ross) "

There is a family out of Maryland and Virginia named Rose. My ancestor is Rueben Rose who is described in current records as "swarthy". On his tombstone, his daughters listed his grandparents as his parents. It is assumed that he may have been at least a quarter Indian as the Rose and Ross lines got all mixed up during that time period in the early 1700s. Can't prove anything, but still interesting.

"Among black conservatives," Williams said, "they tell me privately, it would be very hard to vote against him [Obama] in November."

Race is a factor, a huge factor, and to dismiss it, or ignore it will do no good to anyone. It's like the elephant in the room.
I think it is with us, no matter what happens. Would an Obama win help to heal the racism in our country ? - or will it depend on individuals...It is really sad that race plays a role, when it should be qualifications above anything else.

Personally I could care less what race anyone is, but that may be because I am white, and haven't had the same life experiences as others, based on skin tone.

the stone work is original to the house the Hobbits door is my fine craftsmanship.
My wife had moved the walk way to the side of the house leaving an ugly hole where the original steps were. I suggested the door as a decorative way to hide the hole. She did the paint job, I did the saw work.

    For you :

"So while researching into the life of Stokley Carmichael, the mentor of Michelle Obama, the first thing that popped out at me was an amazing similarity between the rantings of Carmichael and the ravings of spiritual mentor to Barack Obama, Jeremiah Wright.

It is no coincidence that both Obamas have an affinity for this black separatist mentality.

Most troubling, and perhaps in Michelle Obama’s eyes most alluring, was his shift away from any alliance whatsoever with anyone white.

Is this a clue to why she chose to be such an active participant in a black separatist white hating and blaming church for 20 years?"

Malik Obama confirms his half-brother Barack grew up a Muslim

"Apparently the Obamas of Kenya have been reading those scurrilous emails to which Barack likes to refer, because they have no doubt -- contrary to the claims of the Obama campaign, that the presidential candidate was raised a Moslem. They take that as a given.

As the Jerusalem Post reports, "Barack Obama's half brother Malik said Thursday that if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background. In an interview with Army Radio he expressed a special salutation from the Obamas of Kenya.

It is not clear whether Barack Obama will now disown his half-brother Malik, or throw him under the campaign bus, for acknowledging that shared family background."

And night brings nothing but pain
    Thought I could go on
I see that I was wrong

    Somebody somewhere here my plea
And send my baby back to me
    It'd make me so glad

And the quaint old south side scenery
    Is quaint no more

Your son is home, Dad, and he's found a girl
And she's the greatest girl in all the world
I think you'll like her, Dad, I hope you do
But if you don't that's alright, too
What's new? Do you still work at the drugstore?
Is that true? Still polishing the same floor?

If the Big Boy comes tomorrow
    There'll be no more teardrops
    There'll be no more sorrow
If the Big Boy comes tomorrow
Will he take you with Him?

    Have you been good?
    Have you been bad?
If you haven't lived the way you should
    You'll wish you had

When the Big Boy brings his fiery furnace
Will He like what he sees
Or will he strike the fire and burn us?
    Oh, He's so great
    And He's so straight
    And you know he's watching

    Have you been good?
    Have you been bad?
If you haven't lived the way you should
    You'll wish you had

    Come on, Big Boy
    Come and save us

Come and look at what we've done
    With what you gave us

"But now Hillary has won the popular vote in a Democratic primary, while Obambi has won under the rules. In a spectacular turnabout, media commentators are heaping sarcasm on our plucky Hillary for imagining the “popular vote” has any relevance whatsoever.

Hillary’s argument that she won the popular vote is manifestly relevant to that determination. Our brave Hillary has every right to take her delegates to the Democratic National Convention and put her case to a vote.

And yet every time Hillary breathes a word about her victory in the popular vote, TV hosts respond with sneering contempt at her gaucherie for even mentioning it."

Posted by: Mr. Democrat | June 14, 2008 9:41 PM

Thank you MD. I am trying to unite even while dealing with my own internal disappointment. I've been confused and disappointed that collegial feminists are saying they will vote for McCain as a protest against the DNC process. Believe me, I understand the sentiment (I was saying that a lot earlier until I realized how ridiculous I was being and how it was purely an emotional tantrum I was having cemented in my own form of "grieving" if you will.

    Here's something I posted earlier:

I don't agree with a lot of what Tim Wise has to say in his article:

"An Open Letter to Certain White Women Who Are Threatening to Withhold Support from Obama in November

    Your Whiteness is Showing"

    http://www.counterpunch.org/wise06072008.html

Although I think he's one of the "white guilt" crowd and here HE is lecturing white women about their vote, I've been thinking about what he wrote about voting for a woman:

"Your threats are not about standing up for women. They are only about standing up for the feelings of white women, and more to the point, the aspirations of one white woman. So don't kid yourself. If you wanted to make a statement about the importance of supporting a woman, you wouldn't need to vote for John McCain, or stay home, thereby producing the same likely result--a defeat for Obama. You could always have said you were going to go out and vote for Cynthia McKinney. After all, she is a woman, running with the Green Party, and she's progressive, and she's a feminist"

I have always thought McKinney was odd, but also unfairly targeted by the MSM. I admire her grit and the fact she was able to regain her congressional seat (only to lose it again). But if we really are wanting to vote for a woman, Tim makes a good point. A protest vote in the direction of Ms. McKinney would make a far stronger statement than a movement of "scorch and burn" voting for McCain, who is the antithesis of the values most of us hold dear.

I'm following Jamie's lead who wants to write in Hillary in the Fall but only if the vote won't harm the chances of Mr. Obama carrying Washington State. To vote against Mr. Obama in states where the race is tight would be foolish. Look, I LOVE Hillary and I want her working with Obama. Dog says she thinks Hillary will have a very important role in an Obama administration. If I see something significant my enthusiasm, and those of most feminists, will certainly be jump started, if you will.

    Time will tell....

  231. All this perceived sexism in the media is primarily from MSNBC, also. Older women should realize that women have greater standing now in our society and that trend continues. There are more women than men enrolled in college, more unemployed men than unemployed women, the wage disparity is almost closed (I realize 'almost' may not be good enough for you, but it continues to trend upwards), all within a service-based economic framework within which women are better to excel.

You had a viable female candidate for president, many more women being discussed as potential vice-presidential candidates in both parties, a female Speaker of the House, as well as significant representation in the house, though I'll admit the Senate is still male-dominated. I'm sure these trends will continue, for the reasons stated above, and a female president will become more and more likely. It may not happen in your lifetime, but so what? A woman for the sake of women is the same rationale as a black for the sake of blacks, which is to say, an irrational argument.

  240. Regarding a comment further upthread, I'd actually like to thank Craig for not feeling compelled (so far) to add his "personal tribute" to the tsunami of coverage on Tim Russert.

I consciously abstained from cable news all day yesterday, because I knew it would just be an over-the-top, maudlin deathfest about Russert -- and apparently that's what it was. But because I truly am saddened by Russert's sudden death, and will greatly miss him, I thought I owed it to myself to at least watch the Meet The Press special with Brokaw this morning. So I turned on my TV at 8:55 a.m. and there was a PRE Meet-The-Press tribute show on NBC. It showed Big Russ putting the American flag up in front of his house, then a shot of him walking down the street with Super Duper Russ. Then maudlin sound clips of Super Duper Russ talking about how he always told his son, Little Russ, what a great man Big Russ was and how he won World War II and never ever got mad. Then pictures of Big Russ when he was Teeny Tiny Russ way back during the Depression. Then flash forward to shots of Super Duper Russ as a new dad holding Eight-Pound-Six-Ounce Baby Russ as a newborn. All pegged to Fathers Day. What a downer.

All of that in just five minutes. I had to turn the TV off -- I didn't even make it to the Brokaw special.

It's just incredible. It's like -- can't we just mourn the man tastefully? Why does life always have to be gilded and glorified and maudlinized? Why can't it ever be represented for what it is -- something complex, full of joys and sorrows, good and bad, laden with inexplicable mystery? That's all I wanted to do -- mourn the man for an hour. I'm very sad about his sudden death, but wall-to-wall TV news coverage of it has actually hardened my emotions about the whole thing. It's not a tribute. It's an exploitation. I give up.

Sorry for the rant on a Sunday morning. But there it is.

  256. OK

By 'perceived sexism', I am referring to what is commonly cited on this blog, that is, the punditry on MSNBC primarily. Even the link provided by Marcia was mostly examples from MSNBC. I don't watch TV, so I didn't pick up on any of this sexism in the media, and the only reason I'm aware of it is from the discussion on the internet. Sexism may be pervasive in our society, but examples from ONE TV news network is hardly a substantive argument to that end.

As far as a 'service-based' economy is concerned, Patsi, I am referring to sectors such as health-care, business, marketing, management, real estate, financial services and banking, etc. Living in white middle-class suburbia, I perceive that women hold the good executive jobs and many if not most earn more than their husbands. By them being 'better suited' to such an economy, I believe that because the women I know are on the whole more disciplined, grounded, harder-working, and more goal-driven than the men I know. Based on the anecdotes I hear, they also deal with inter-office politics more tactfully than men.

Sexism in the news media to domestic violence is a big leap, by the way. I realize the latter is a problem, but isn't relevant to the discussion we're having here, at least, not in my estimation. Domestic violence and how to reduce it within our society is a discussion worth having, but I don't see how it's relevant to HRC's failed candidacy.

Sweet Jesus, Champ. You just don't get it. I, for one, am not saying that sexism is what sunk Hillary's campaign. (To the extent that nearly a tie even with two disenfranchised states equals "sunk.")

I am saying that this has exposed a very big societal problem, made all the worse by the fact that so many are shrugging it off as a non-issue.

And of course, violence against women is a part of it. I guess you haven't been following some of the "progressive" blogs where that tone was often taken.

You talk about middle class or suburban women having it pretty good....you sound like a damned Republican saying American workers -- the ones who haven't yet been laid off -- are sitting pretty because they aren't homeless.

The biggest problem here is the complete disdain with which any mention of sexism receives. And if you don't understand that sexism is even more ingrained than racism in the world, well, you haven't been paying attention.

What you need to understand is that media reflects society and then moves what it reflects to a greater degree in that direction.

Olbermann, Mathews etc were only amplifying something that already exists and by making it acceptable to say those things, increased the attitudes in society.

Most people point to the string of Obama wins as an example of a poor Clinton campaign. I will agree to a point, but I also blame a lot of it on the writers' strike. During that long stretch the satire was missing allowing Sen. Obama a free ride during most of the debates.

If you remember that first SNL skit making fun of the way the news media conducted themselves around Sen. Obama gave Sen. Clinton a big boost. Unfortunately by then most of the other candidates were gone and she was way behind in the delegate count.

This endless cycle of reflection, amplification, and feedback shapes society and not always for the better.
The only thing that really slows it down are the cynics and satirists who were for the most part missing during this election cycle.

It's exactly what Putin's Russia is doing to us now, in the SAME EXACT COUNTRY & REGION. Is our collective memory that short? God help us all."

Nonsense. as much as anything the Soviet Union collapsed because the non-Russian Warsaw Pact countries became tired of paying dues in the form of money, manpower, and territory to Mother Russia.

Their involvement in Afghanistan was seen as exceedingly divisive within the Soviet Union because it pitted Muslim against Muslim; never a good idea. This resulted in ever increasing numbers of troops needed to maintain the illusion of internal security within the republics.

We are spending a piddling amount of our GDP in Afghanistan (and Iraq). And even that amount would be dramatically lower if we conscientiously worked to reduce graft and corruption, and (gasp!) reinstituted a fairly administered draft of young men and women (an event that would surely force a reexamination of our international involvement and security priorities).

Of course, just my opinion.

    Champ,
I appreciate the response on the 'perceived sexism thing. And can see your point of view.

But MSNBC is representative of what we've already seen all our lives. It's everywhere, if you're on the receiving end. These attitudes are what turn into the abuse you are talking about later on, down the line.

Some of us on this site have said many times that this has become about more than just this election and Hillary. So we address that, not as a reason for Hillary losing, but as part of a bigger issue. To hear it reduced to 'perceived' is to say we've imagined it.

The select/elect column may have been written to stir-up trouble within the Dem party. But is she wrong about how Hillary was treated by the DNC and MSM?

In a Clinton/McCain contest, I'm guessing that Coulter's anti-McCain position would be harmful to him not Hillary. Saying that McCain is SO defective, that she would support Hillary should not turn off Dems. It might decrease Repub support for McCain by a very tiny amount.

  314. Pro-Life doesn't mean crazy. Pro-abortion doesn't mean murderer. I can understand how there are some circumstances , rape etc....where a woman is pregnant and wouldn't want to have a baby. But , if it's something as simple as people having sex without protection and getting an unwanted pregnancy , then there are other options besides abortion. Adoption , for one.

Posted by: Corey Author Profile Page | June 15, 2008 3:51 PM

  315. Corey, my problem with the so-called "pro-life" movement is that they are pro-life only from point of conception to point of birth. Beyond that they fight against welfare parents, single mothers staying home, and then criticise the same mothers when they have to leave their children to do menial jobs to try and provide for them. Their motivation is not "pro-family", it is a form of social control.

An excellent book to read, a novel really, is Margaret Atwood's "A Handmade's Tale"... much better than the film. It was my first read in my Masters in Public Administration program and it is a fictionalized look at what would happen if the right-wing fundamentalists achieved all their societal and political goals. What it is a testament to is "the ultimate administered society".

Pro-Life is not Pro-Life if it punishes the poor who have children, single women, or families that have to work overtime just to keep a roof over their heads.

They are not pro-life -- not in the sense as we may see it.

But , she put her up for adoption. Regardless of whether a woman has an abortion or not, she has to live with whatever decision she makes. I have a cousin who had a baby out of a one night stand. She was gonna ask the Father for child support , but he told her that he would fight her for custody and that scared her. So , she didn't ask for child support. She had another baby with a different man a few years later. She recently gave both children away because she could not take care of them. My sister was upset about this because she and my husband as well as their next door neighbors have children they adopted. They would have gladly adopted my cousin's children had she been willing to give up custody of them 7-8 years ago. I also understand the financial strains having a baby can bring to a family. "Now let us imagine a different candidate, one who looks like Barack Obama, with the same mixed-race, international background, even the same middle name. But this time, he is Colonel Obama, a veteran of the war in Iraq, a kick-ass Marine with a "take no prisoners" attitude, who vows to follow Osama bin Laden to the outskirts of Hell. He comes from the culture of the military (the most color blind and merit-based in the country), and not the rarefied air of Hyde Park. He goes to a church with a mixed-race congregation and a rational preacher. He has never met Bill Ayers, and if he did he would flatten him. He thinks arugula is a town near Bogota and has Toby Keith on his favorites list. Would he strike no chords at all in Jacksonian country? Does anyone think he would lose 90 to 9 in Buchanan County? Or lose West Virginia by 41 points? For those Jacksonians who would be fine with a black man in the White House (not as tiny a group as Newsweek thinks), Colonel Obama is the one we are waiting for. When we will get him is anyone's guess."

  337. That KO article sounds like he's a person you either like or don't like. Suzy Kolber said that Keith was sometimes so overbearing while at ESPN that she'd lock herself in the bathroom and cry. I like Suzy Kolber. If I was there , I would have given Keith a ride on my shoe.

  340. I worked with a woman who was like Keith. A great worker. Always did a great job. But , she no people skills. She always tried to get others into trouble at work. Was the type of person you didn't argue with because she was always right and you were wrong. All the guys at work disliked her. But , the boss tolerated her because she was a good worker , even if he knew all the guys on our line didn't like her.

  350. Obama tells black fathers to engage their kids

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25176204/

"They [black fathers] have abandoned their responsibilities, acting like boys instead of men. And the foundations of our families are weaker because of it," the Democratic presidential candidate [Obama] said Sunday at a largely black church in his hometown.

    LOL
All them white people out there love it when a black man rants on other blacks. Obama is going for the Cosby of the year award..

  357. Ok, don't know how many I'll get to before I run out of steam...

"Just pull out, let them slaughter each other, if that's how they want to play it. We can't lead them by the hand to democracy and equality, if for no other reason than we can't afford it financially."

This is a mindset I DESPISE. We did this, we did the shock and awe, we killed this population and destroyed their schools and hospitals. And now it comes down to "Well, those losers just ought to take care of it themselves! And if they kill each other because of our actions, WTF!!!???"

My God, what kind of people have we become?
    Posted by: Patsi | June 15, 2008 2:23 PM

I didn't kill anyone, I didn't bomb any schools, or participate in any shock and awe campaigns. I never supported the war, and I pay negligible taxes, only because they'd throw me in jail if I didn't.

We removed their 'brutal' dictator, I don't know if they wanted us to or not, but we did. They wouldn't be killing themselves because of our actions, they'd be killing themselves because of sectarian strife and turf wars. It could be a possibility that our presence is exacerbating the problem.

We can't stay there forever, Patsi, and let our soldiers die in the midst of someone else's civil war. It's a cold hard world, in Iraq especially. Just get our troops the hell out already. Don't get too worried for the Iraqis, we ain't pulling out regardless. Strategic presence.

  359. Pro-Life is not Pro-Life if it punishes the poor who have children, single women, or families that have to work overtime just to keep a roof over their heads.

They are not pro-life -- not in the sense as we may see it.

    Posted by: EuroTom | June 15, 2008 3:59 PM

Your argument here, Tom, is essentially: poor people should kill their babies because kids are just so damned expensive.

You guys should realize their is a diverse range of positions within the conservative framework, and the neo-cons who hijacked the GOP are about as conservative as Frank Zappa, if you'' pardon the poor analogy. Spend spend spend, war war war, jesus jesus jesus. The republican platform I learned about as a kid was all about limited government, civil liberties, states rights (federalism), low taxes... al that good stuff. Pro-Life isn't a republican principle, and there are many Pro-life Dems, Bob Case and Harry Reid come to mind.

It's funny, all my conservative friends think I'm a bleeding-heart liberal, and all my liberal friends call me a heartless conservative. Leads me to believe I may be on the right side after all- neither.

  360. Oh yeah, forgot to add Patsi, re: "My God, what kind of people have we become?"

I am certainly NOT representative of 'people' or 'we'. I'm speaking on my own behalf, and any outrageous or provocative statements I make are most likely not reflective of the general consensus. To which I'm glad, because I've found general consensus is usually full of shit.

    Posted by: champ | June 16, 2008 12:45 AM

  361. Yeah Joe Lieberman, Mr. Let's Fight Yet Another Proxy War for Israel, But Call it 'the War on Terror" to Fool All the American Rubes. It's a long nickname. I just call him 'asshole'.

I don't mind Patsi, my provocative statements are useless if they don't provoke anyone. I guess I am as guilty as the sensationalist manipulative media that way. Not proud of it, but you got to start a conversation somehow...

    As far as Iraq,

I'm sure they've had enough of our help and our military midas touch. We've messed things up enough over there already. We can't babysit them for 100 years (even though we will anyway) until they learn to play nice. It's just not practical. Shitty situation? Yes. The time for moral righteousness was in 2003, though. There should have been riots in the streets, for christ's sake. But we all sat in front of the TV, absorbed all the lies, and watched the invasion like a football game. Time to drop the silly idealism and face geo-political facts.

  362. Anglachel's Journal

    Representation

The consolidation of Whole Foods Nation under The Dear Leader in Chicago has me and the spousal unit going "Hmm".

I've written before about the Obamacan demand that Democratic money be brought under the Chicago Combine's control, but subsuming the entire DNC to a single candidate's campaign is both horrifying and fascinating, kind of like watching decomposition. As there are more confirmed details, I'll be writing more, but one little gem stood out for me, which is the way the state operations, the ones that promote the downticket candidates, are being rolled up into the Obama operation.
