As Hillary Rodham Clinton prepares to savor an expected win today in West Virginia's primary, the question is whether her late-in-the game victories represent the usual last-minute rallying for a failing challenger or an ominous sign of Barack Obama's troubles reaching voters outside his demographic base. While the Mountain State is almost a laboratory for rural and working-class voters who often elude Democrats in general elections, Obama is banking on building an unprecedented party coalition of new voters around the country who could change history and propel the first Democrat since 1916 to win the White House in November without West Virginia.
The Trail Less Traveled was in Morgantown, W. Va., where locals are excited to vote in today's Democratic primary despite the fact that many political experts say the outcome won't matter.

VIDEO INTERVIEW: Clinton Stronger Than Obama in W. Va. General Election

Comments
Craig Good Morning,
I believe that the bottom line is that West Virginia hasn't ALWAYS predicted the next president. So Barack Obama is not out in the cold if Hillary Clinton does.
Also the loyal Democrats of West Virginian are loyal to a fault. A great trait. They and Kenutcky will display their loyalties today. Good for them!
However, according to the Math, Obama is still ahead after the votes are in.
So everyone enjoy. I can't help but feel good for all of you. A good way to end the Day for Senator Clinton.

We’ve all been talking about how pompous and lousy our punditry class is and how they want to choose our candidates and select the issues (or controversies—phony or not) that should be covered while ignoring policies that have a real impact on all Americans. It’s been pretty sickening all around. Eric Boehlert wrote this great column weeks before Tuesday’s primary called “So now the press tells candidates when to quit?”
History continues to unfold on many levels as the protracted Democratic Party primary race marches on, featuring the first woman and the first African-American with a real shot at winning the White House. Here’s another first: the press’s unique push to get a competitive White House hopeful to drop out of the race. It’s unprecedented.

Pointing to the Bush administration, he said, "we know that over the last eight years we've already fallen short of meeting this test."
He cited once shabby conditions at such facilities as Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and long waits and bureaucratic obstacles facing many who seek care from the Veterans Administration.

Craig,
To answer your question, no Hillary's late- in-the-game, likely double digit wins
in West Virginia and Kentucky do not represent the last minute rallying for
a failing challenger but do signify Obama's troubles reaching voters outside
his demographic base.
The fact his surrogates and most pundits are pushing the notion that Obama
will change the electoral map is just another way of suggesting that these
"problematic" folks don't matter. Instead of working to win them over, Camp
Obama will merely ignore them. Millions of white working class voters, white
women over 40 and anyone not enchanted by Obama or who question him
have been demonized by the media anyway--transformed into racists or
old, senile women, uneducated, beneath contempt.
But, I worry about a presidential candidate who seems to have such problems
relating to a large section of this country. It is a shocking situation that should
not be ignored.

Sheila,
Do not put your party hat on for November quite yet. There is another side to the equation in Nov. Although I strongly support Hillary and will write-in her name in Nov.. Obama has problems elsewhere that WV shows off today.
Here in Massachusetts, we have a long history of electing Republican Governors, there is a large white working class and lots of Catholics, our current Governor, the first African-American and huge Obama supporter, is a colossal disaster with approval ratings in the low 30's near Bush country, and NH is next door which is wildly enthusiastic for McCain and lots of NH people work in MA. Last month polling data in MA showed McCain was beating Obama (47-44%) while Hillary crushed McCain (57-42%). Hillary won MA by big numbers.
The polling has changed since then but Obama is still weak here. I have loads of Boston College friends that are opting for McCain rather than Obama....

Wow! Great Article. Not necesarily Pro Obama. But very Pro "Understanding WV"
Can Barack Obama win West Virginia?
http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2008/05/13/west_virginia/
Once upon a time, Michael Dukakis could carry West Virginia by five points, one of only 10 states he won in 1988. And Bill Clinton won the state twice. But cultural issues --
"God, guns and abortion," as Charleston's Republican Mayor Danny Jones put it Monday morning on local talk radio host Hoppy Kercheval's show -- finally moved West Virginia toward the red column in presidential elections, dooming Al Gore and John Kerry here.
Now Democratic Party chairman Nick Casey isn't even sure the state is up for grabs in the fall.
"We were a swing state, and we swung the wrong way the last two elections," Casey, who hasn't endorsed either candidate, said in an interview.
"We got bamboozled, fooled, lied to -- whatever the word is -- by the inside-the-Beltway Republican Karl Rove machine. ... I don't know if people are considering us a swing state or not anymore."

Re: David Schuster's somewhat premature piece about possible veeps for BO --
I voted for Hil'ry Clinton because I thought she was the best-qualified candidate, not because she is a woman. You can't just put a woman in that position and expect to get Hil'ry's votes. Heck, you can't even put Hil'ry in that position and expect me to vote for BO...unless I can be assured that the VP spot will not be its usual superfluous self, but Cheney-esque.
BO can be the spokesmodel if Hil'ry can be in charge.

Good Morning All,
I woke up and flipped on the news thinking, "West Virginia" this will be nice. Go out on a high note, and enjoy today. Senator Obama will be okay. Then I hear Chris Matthews and Mika yammering on about just how evil Hillary Clinton is for shredding the party blah blah blah and the instant reaction is ... NEVER!~!!!!!!!! I'll vote for Obama when the devil is ice skating.

Too true. If the media had pushed harder for details on what BO wants to do & how he plans to do it, if the public had known about Rezko, Ayers, Hamas & Wright in December, he wouldn't have had the momentum to get this far.
The GOP will pounce on him with these things & the Dems will have Kerry-ed themselves out of a chance at the WH, again.
I'd like the Dems to win, but more importantly, I'd like this country to get back on track. If McCain rides the fence between conservative & maverick, if he can make people believe he's both, he will win.
I don't think McCain will toe the party line once in office. I think he's playing the game because he has to do so. As Craig stated back at the NY convention (sitting in Herald Square), McCain has to be the Republican nominee; he can't be the nominee of no party.
Posted by: blueINdallas | May 13, 2008 7:36 AM
jamie - I was quite amused at how out of touch Tweety & Meeker are about Dems voting for BO just because they are Dem. If it comes down to ice skating, folks may go with the devil they know (McCain) rather than the devil they don't know (BO).
As far as I can tell, BO does not offer change nor does he offer solutions. BO only offers more questions.
Posted by: blueINdallas | May 13, 2008 7:41 AM
Sheila,
Matthews almost literally just said that any woman who supported Clinton must have led a wasted life and blamed Obama for all the failures and Mika just giggled at him. ... YUCK
He should be forced to listen to his misogynistic drivel on continuous loop until the men in the white coats come to drag him away to his well deserved padded cell where he can spit and drool on the floor for the next decade.
Posted by: Jamie
| May 13, 2008 7:44 AM
Here's a thought: A huge write-in vote campaign for Hil'ry. That would give all of those who voted for BO in their state's primary & who now have buyer's remorse a chance to put the right person in the WH!
Posted by: blueINdallas | May 13, 2008 7:45 AM
Sheila,
Right now all I know is that I don't want the Matthews of the world to WIN. If that means voting against Obama just to watch him shrivel in well deserved ignomy, then voting for McCain will be fun.
Posted by: Jamie

Blue,
That's actually what I plan to do. It was my mid way position. Obama might be able to seduce me from there, but as of now it will be a write in if only for the joy of seeing the numbers reported in November.
If that turns into a full blown campaign, I'm on board.

Jamie, Blue & Patsi: I think Obama has some pretty smart bean counters working for him. After all, they figured out how to run the numbers to get where they are. And, there's a pretty good chance that they believe they can win in November with this new coalition—I haven't done enough research to know whether or not it's possible but I suspect it is. The question is: What happens to the "old" coalition? Where do the Hillocrats go? I think it's time for a real third party movement in this country...

Three more weeks and then Billary will given in a space Hall of Failed Presidential campaigns.
And I forgot to comment on this yesterday, but dang Craig, they really called you out yesterday morning on Morning Joe. I've been saying that Craig has been in the bag for Clinton forever, and I even gave a list of negative Obama headlines Craig will post in the future.

Corey,
The big problem with a third party candidate is money. Virtually all of the constituencies that support Sen. Clinton are solidly middle class. They don't have thousands that add up to millions to throw at a candidate. That was one of the reasons that I suggested jumping on an existing party structure such as the green party.

I've posted several times recently about Obama's willful failure to hold European Affairs Sub-Committee Hearings -- which is a position his party appointed him to do in an office the people of Illinois elected him to perform.
Those are obligations to the people, to the Senate and to the nation -- particularly at a time when the Russian Federation is looking to reinstate a non-ideologically, purely power driven version of Soviet dominance throughout Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
I haven't heard a response from any of them -- whatever their temperaments are.
Shame on them.
So keep this as a little mirror in your bird cages as you chirrup, squawk and peck.
You are supporting a public servant who doesn't serve the public or the world.
He could have missed a few campus rallies, you know, to hold hearings.
If you think that because he is "popular" he will have much influence over even a Senate with a stronger Democratic majority.... you've got a lot of hope and very little reality on your side.
The Senate will be concerned to the point of obsession with re-establishing its Constitutional powers.
They will not be in a honeymoon phase with him longer than his Inauguration Day speech. They disdain him and his disdain for them.
Anyway... maybe Obama's next campaign song on YouTube will be him making his Astaire moves to "Putin On The Ritz"..
Because he doesn't seem to grasp what is happening there at all.

The idea that he can beat McCain in the western Red states is not a given by any means. Where does he make up he electoral college votes that he might lose in the swing states?
Let us all remember that the voting in November does not include weighted voting, that the citizens who vote most consistently and with the highest percentage are the elderly, and that women are now estimated to be 56% of the voting population.

When Billary inevitably decides to imitate the Black Knight of Monty Python fame, refusing to leave after June 3rd, Craig will still be saying it's not over. And also saying she can still win. LOL

Renee, what the hell has happened to the Celts? Best record in the NBA, and I believe they had the best reg. season road record. Cleveland has its work cut out for it to take 2 of the next 3. Not enough backup for Lebron. The formula is apparently that if he has a double double, Cleveland wins.
Skylark, sorry, but you are misinformed. WV has voted for the successful dem candidate for pres. in every election since 1916 (which includes Kennedy, Johnson, Carter and Clinton since 1960), we have a dem governor, 2 dem senators, and 2 of our 3 reps are dem, 2/3 of our state legislature is dem and only one statewide officeholder (Secretary of State) is republican. Yep, we're a rep state, alright that should be written off as being a rep state in pres. elections. I hope Axelrod doesn't have your insight into the swing states' electoral leanings.

EuroTom,
Anything before which people attach the word "New" with a capital N usually means brattiness is in season.
Brattiness is always a part of American idealism.
Brattiness is always the part which fails in its promise, in its premise, in its execution.
The most bitter, excorciating people on this site are the ones with the least interest in policy.
They are enraged -- not with the system, not with the war but with their own existences.
If I were to go a production company where I was working with a pitch called "The New Screenplay"... all I would be doing was evading the actual crap I had to sell.
Your diet works.
Theirs is made entirely of Magic Beans.
And the Magic Bean Diet transforms anyone who lives on it into a flaming stream of angry farts.

"Early-ish on in the primary, Barney Frank posted( an Op/Ed piece at HuffPo and other places that focused on a key reason Hillary: his unease with Obama's rhetoric about getting beyond the conflicts of the 90s. Frank pointed out that the issues fought over in the 1990s -- abortion, gay rights, the role of government -- are central to what it means to be a progressive. He was proud to have fought them. Indeed, he asked implicitly, was Obama suggesting that he could wave a wand and make these issues go away? Or, was he suggesting that we must not fight on these issues in service of some idea of "post-partisanship"? And what could we hope to accomplish?
I don't think we have ever gotten the answers from Obama.
And, now, Obama appears to be echoing the narrative, spread by the right and their media friends, that the anti-war movement was against the troops. We all know the stories -- that soldiers were spat upon as they returned from Vietnam. In reality, there are few, if any, credible reports that this happened. It was quite the opposite -- anti-war protesters wanted to end a meaningless war and bring the draftees home.
............
hope and thought we could change Washington. We didn't succeed but we marched our hearts out against the war and for civil rights and paved the way. Now he's co-opted the words and reduced them to a campaign slogan, and to top it off, throws us under the bus.
He was 7 years old in 1968 and now wants to gain his street cred among conservatives by distancing himself from us to prove his patriotism and fitness to run against "war hero" John McCain?
He's not showing unity and a new kind of politics. He's spreading divisiveness and showing his brand of politics is no different than that of those that preceded him. "
Obama makes it clear he does not need or want the help of the boomer generation. ...and certainly has not respect or sense of history for what has preceded him as well.
He seems to be working as hard as he can to make sure all these people either stay home for vote for the GOP

The only thing that would really be a total game changer (just to use the term or light minded twits) would be a Clinton win in Oregon.
Obama is considered such a total shoo in for the state that if she actually wiped out that seven point spread to win (or for that matter got withing two points) , it would be such a bombshell, that even MNSBCobama would have to pay attention. It's not likely but it sure would be exciting.

Pogo: TY for the good information. Considering how strong McCain is in New Hampshire, Sen Obama really would need to win WV and NM (where I suspect McCain also will be strong)...
I still would like to know how Sen Obama thinks he can make up the electoral votes of the big swing states.

maggi: "Not that I think Sen Clinton will win Oregon ... it is a funny state, the coast very blue, inland very red (like California) and the blues generally outnumber the reds. I think she is hoping for better than expected"
and Hillary hasn't really campaigned much there yet. Obama has spent a lot of time there, but I don't remember the numbers being much different before. So the part about them tied with those who already voted is good news-but don't know what to make of it. Maybe her voters just vote sooner? I don't quite know what to make of the female drop in support there either. There's probably a phenomenal amunt of Obama advertising, judging by what he's doing in other states. Maybe Oregondemocrat will come on later and tell us how things look there.

Meg: I do know that Obama has been "up" in Oregon for quite some time and HRC cannot match him in funds. It's too bad that her campaign wasted so much money trying to win Iowa...it was always a losing proposition, but I suppose they hoped for a knock-out punch.
The thing that amuses me is when people talk about Sen Obama being a good potential executive because he's run such a good campaign ... in that case, we should all vote for David Axelrod, I guess.

Lynn C: I could not agree with you more regarding Sen Obama's rhetoric about Boomers and also the preceding generation. What has bothered me about Sen Obama from the first is that his unique upbringing seems to have left him without certain gut-level appreciation for his own country ... that what he knows he learned from books. When I first heard the 57 state thing, for instance, I thought it was a joke...but since he apologized for misspeaking I guess it wasn't and I have to wonder who would ever make such a mistake?

My question is the real swing states ... his surrogates have given the impression they do not need Ohio, Pennsylvania...and they certainly seem willing to forego Florida and Michigan. That's a lot of electoral votes to give up.
BTW, I think McCain has a real chance in NM. I don't think Richardson covered himself with glory, and McCain is not only from a neighboring state but has a very solid record with Hispanics and native Americans.

Since the Supers will determine this race and based on all the so called experts this race is over then tell me why the Supers are holding out. I don't believe they are being nice to Hillary, this is an election for President not a lovefest. Also if Hillary is running out of money then why send her daughter to Puerto Rico. She could go there anytime she wanted too. I don't believe anyone would continue this race if they thought they did not have a chance of winning. After 15 months, it's got to be tiring. Why put yourself thru it. I think she believes there is something out there that is going to change this and it starts today.

It seems that everyone forgets that when Russia wanted to put missiles on our doorstep in Cuba we didn't like it, so why should Putin feel any different about us putting missiles on his doorstep.
And like the Mission Accomplished sign Bush used he also told Putin to get over it that the cold war was over.
Just like his statement to Bring It On in Iraq he incited more violence against American Troops.
I fear Bush more than I fear Putin and Russia. If you don't think he won't take us into war in Iran you better think again.
He's insane and don't give a damn what the American People think and you all better wake up before its to late.

Hey
Remember half of the democratic votes cast today will safely be in the Republican column come November.
How can you only poll 25% in a state where the locals vote Democrat and claim to be a national candidate?
What is the new electoral coalition Obama is putting together?
I keep hearing it but all I see are a lot of AAs voting with their hearts
and a lot of Naderites voting their anger.
The rest is made up of college students that fall in and out of love with the next georgeous babe or hunk that walk by.
All of these folks are safely in the Democrat camp.
Democrats make up 36% of the electorate.
So how does Obama blow off the the rest and survive.
The answer is he doesn't.
You can't win states like Virginia when you have more pictures taken of you hugging Ted Kennedy than you have hugging your wife.
It is the same old story.
Republicans only need 30 or 40 electoral college votes to win.
Democrats need around 85
Go play with this map
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/interactives/campaign08/electoral-college/
With Obama's hard run to the left he has lost states like Florida and Missouri.
I don't see him getting them back.
As I said before forget about Virginia, notice the Democrats they elect are damn near Republicans.
As I play with the map and polls, it comes down to the same state, Ohio will decide the election
I hope those of you from Ohio have a good set ear plugs.

A write-in campaign sounds good; the Green Party sounds like a possibility. However, I do worry about Hil'ry becoming the Ralph Nadar of '08 & giving BO a chance to win...if, as I suspect, the Dems are foolishly anxious to put up Kerry II as the nom.
If it takes voting for McCain to make sure that the MORE capable candidate gets into office, then that's what I'll do. However, I would like to see the MOST capable candidate win and that is Hil'ry.

The biggest problem with a "write in" is that the candidate must file to become one. If Hillary doesn't file, then you can't "write in" her name without the whole ballot being invalidated. That is oneof the ways the two major parties hang on to power.
This is the main reason that I faceciously suggested yesterday that she and Gore run on the Green Ticket, since that party already exists in the majority of states.

Meg and Jamie: nope, I see Jamie's 12:03 post as being pretty generic for Obama supporters.
PS: for those planning a write-in in November -- which would be a perfect thing to do to your grandchildren and loved ones with so much at stake after 8 years of Bush-Cheney -- get yer spite on --
why stop with Hillary? Vote for Abe Lincoln too!
Most of us regret we never got the chance to support President Lincoln in his time (although are glad to have missed that bloody war), so go for it.
Like FDR -- write him in too!
I mean, voting for a candidate not on the ballot rather disqualifies your vote, does it not?, and therefore, why stick to one write-in candidate only?
Hell, Leonardo daVinci was a pretty cool guy too. He was pretty inventive; would have some good ideas on what we could do if we don't have much $$ for new technology. You know, 'cause it's all tied up in Iraq, etc.
So what if he's (a) dead for centuries, (b) Italian and (c) never set foot in any of the American territory. Write him in!
And take your favorite crayon or fountain pen along for the occasion.
Liked Shirley Chisholm and regret that you never got to vote for a viable black candidate -- oh, wait....

doots - It's a reddish-brownish-purplish color, and yes, that was the origin of the word. However, I have moved from puce to Merlot to aubergine. Yes, definitely aubergine today.
jeejee - No, you don't have to vote. Clinton supporters wouldn't have to vote in WV today, but in doing so, they send a message about who they think is more likely to win in the general against McCain.

AP funny you ask. I voted on an opscan ballot this morning - it had a place to write in candidates for at least a couple of the races. I have to expect that the opscan readers are set to detect whether there is a mark in the write-in field and either reads the written-in entry (I doubt this because of the variability of handwriting) or diverts the ballot to be hand counted.
vad, for you - to show you the excitement here. (btw, I know Truman Chafin, and Truman Chafin is an idiot).

Chef Sheila Hussein The Nun said"
Obama said of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, "the true test of our patriotism is whether we will serve our returning heroes as well as they've served us."
Typical Obama who was critical of Senator Clinton because of the Gas Holiday proposal and called it pandering, is now pandering to get the Veteran vote by supporting the GI Extension Bill S. 1261 which is a flawed bill and has an expiration date on it, plus added funding for the Iraq war built in. I detect hypocrisy here, what is he going to do co-sponsor a bill that funds the war he is opposed to or shamelessly pander to get the Vet vote? This Bill has no incentive to stay in the military, and may deplete our military even further than it has been under Bush. Sen Harkin needs to amend the bill from it's current status. It is a moot point because Obama knows Bush will veto the bill anyway so he gets to play hero here without any liability, it is a good bill long overdue that just needs some tweaks to it
In any event the political novice is still debating whether or not to Co-sponsor the bill too bad for him he is not able to vote "Present" on it lol

LOVE the graph..... and yes.... I put names to the various categories too..... lol...
anon..... optical scanners are machines that count votes marked on a paper ballot.... at the very end of the ballot is a section for write-ins..... when a write-in is detected the ballot is automatically kicked out so the write-in vote can be recorded by hand.... I've counted many such ballots.... it ain't rocket science.....

So instead I should vote for someone I believe to be totally unqualified for the job he is seeking and who will damage the country by being an amateur puppet controlled by the left fringe of the party that has kept us out of office for multiple decades?

Meg,
To follow up on an earlier comment about Obama being an invention of Axelrod... I have my own theory.
I've been troubled by the disconnect in Clinton strength vs McCain in the electoral college, how Obama rose so fast from 3yrs in Senate and seemed to have a organization materialize from nothing, and why the DNC and party elders have been so tough on Hillary.
My theory is Howard Dean:
He competed for DNC chair in 2004 against Clinton opposition.. so now he hates the Clintons and pay back is now
As DNC chair, he's been touring the country setting up his 50 state strategy for the last 4 yrs. and he's handed over the network to his hand picked nominee in 2008 ..Obama.. (it's the one thing that makes sense for the huge advantage Obama had in all those caucus states shortly after Super Tues. The Clinton's thought the expense would be prohibitive ..that's why they did not compete.)
Dean's new electoral college map that seems to exclude all the traditional democratic base also seems to need some southern states. He went down there after he won the DNC chair and started building a base. Obama has won big there
Howard Dean kept The Deaniacs and his massive internet operation going after 2004.. they have been mobilized now and the Obamabots sure fit the Deaniac description
I hate to think the party I have supported so long would be about revenge and a flawed candidate.. rather than supporting the best candidate and our country.
Go Hillary!! write in candidate in 2008

I agree with Carville on this:
“I still hear some dogs barking,” said Carville, the flamboyant Louisianan known as the left’s ragin’ Cajun. “I’m for Senator Clinton, but I think the great likelihood is that Obama will be the nominee.
“As soon as I determine when that is, I’ll send him a check.”
But the check has not been written yet.

It doesn't matter if I can't vote in the primaries anymore, because this is the first year I can remember that we even had a choice. Bowwow, I've been coming to somewhat the same conclusion. It took a while to put the pieces together, but what got me going at first was when I heard that howard dean was the first one to work the internet well and had a huge base on it before he lost. Also, Dean on tv a while back said "we have to make sure this election appears fair" before we end it. Since then, he changed it to :making sure the election is fair" but I distinctly remember his saying APPEARS fair at the time. They're afraid if it doesn't appear fair, then they lose Hillary's part of the voting block.
I assume you may have seen this (that someone posted earlier) and normally I wouldn't have taken it seriously, but the pieces were all there in my mind anyway.

anon-p,
Your answer about Putin was solipsistic and inadequate.
Putin is intent on recreating not only the Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, his relationship with Iran is totally resonant with the ancient Russian domination, at first through trade and then through military alliance, of Central Asia.
Western Europe is increasingly disturbed by Putin's total usurping of the Russian gas and oil industries (including the jailing of anyone who was now President Medvedev).
That is the device he is using to launch war with the Republic of Georgia.
Putin has made the Russian Orthodox Church the OFFICIAL state religion and has encourged both legal and illegal abuse of any other Christian belief. Judaism and Islam are both condemned and open to all sorts of violence and legal abuse.
Putin has also made this the hallmark of public schooling within the Russian Federation.
Your concerns about the White House are Bush league compared to this and the effects this will have on Eastern & Western Europe along with the Middle East and Central Asia.
There is no law there except dictatorship and the rapid accumulation of power and abuse of law.
AND OBAMA IGNORED THIS -- which was his MAIN responsibility in the Senate.
You must love that dearly.

Also if the Republicans maintain 41 seats they will block any votes they don't like which is something the Democrats failed to do when they had 49 seats and 1 traitor Judas Lieberman.
Remember 7 Dem's and Judas voted for the MCA of 2006. The Republicans held all theres to vote for it except Lincoln Chafee and they got Judas's vote in place of his. Still 7 Dem's crossed over on that bill.

Just a thought on this very good day in WV. It really doesn't matter about the math, because if Hillary wins this and Kaintuck, Puerto Rico, and comes close in Oregon, Montana and S. Dakota - there is always a vote on the convention floor, where they will have to find a way to seat the MI and FL delegates or disenfranchise them(tsk, tsk). A public exploding(Gordo) is always better and more OPEN so that people can see they're not being robbed by the Clintons.
I don't quite follow why pundits etc., use that terminology. It's Hillary that's running. Since Michelle runs her very big mouth for her husband, maybe Hillary is running against the Obamas, plural.

I am going to simply state that, I will support Senator Clinton to the end, in my heart my soul and my mind I believe she will be a far better president then Sen. Obama, there is not one shred of doubt that I have about that. I have taken alot of abuse because of it but I will stand firm.
If Obama is the nominee at this time I am not sure what I will do, I will weigh my options, one thing I am sure of, I will not vote for Obama.
One thing I will do is that I will continue to defend Hillary even if she is not the nominee because already the venomous Obama supporters are setting her up for the blame if Obama loses the general election, I am not going to backstab her like the Kennedy's, Richardson's, Andrews, etc etc, loyalty means something to me.
All this scorched earth nonsense is garbage, big deal so what she comes back in 2012 and wins, once again I and many others will back and support her once again, and I will have a long memory in the next round of democratic primaries and all those that took their support away from Hillary I will vote for the other Democratic candidate and encourage others to especially women to do the same, there will be a blood debt to be paid and women will be respected.
Politics is a rough game and the Clinton's play it well, these super-delegates be warned, we are taking names and kicking butt. Hillary may or may not be denied the nomination if so she will be back in 2012 whereas Obama will be a foggy memory, Democrats for better or worse have no love for failed candidates in the general election, they tend to be more tolerant of primary losses.
We fought in battle we lost in battle...and battle again we will! We are Irish close kin to the Scots and just like Braveheart with Sir William Wallace we will mount our mighty steeds and do battle again for Hillary! Stay The Course And Don't Give Up The Fight!

Posted by: Bye Bye Billary | May 13, 2008 2:25 PM
So I have come up with a new political "catch phrase" to support the "Dream Ticket"....
"Screw the people you are closest too."
(Mind you - this phrase if for effect - and should not be taken literally...well, then again ; )
Anyways - here is the logic. I think most of the people that would have the biggest problem with putting Hillary Clinton on the ticket - are the die-hard Obama supporters. These are the supporters that have taken every Clinton attack on Obama personally. They are mad as hell and they want Clinton's head on a platter - instead of simply kissing and making up.
But guess what - those Obama-maniacs are going anywhere. I cannot for the life of me envision how any significant number of the most loyal supporters of Obama - would ever consider voting for McCain simply because Clinton would be VP.
(Anyways - I would love to hear what people have to say on this because I am still thinking it through myself.)
But I keep coming back to two things important for the VP:
1. What votes do they bring to the general?
2. How will they perform at the VP debates and on the campaign trail?
1. HRC does not simply put a single state in play. Moreover, while a Governor might bring a state (I think we could count on Rendell) - Hillary WILL bring millions and millions of loyal supporters.
2. I will enjoy her a heck of a lot more when she is attacking McCain and the Republicans - instead of Obama. And I can't think of anyone that would fare better in the debates.
(Got to do some work - but I will be back later.)

Bye bye Billary,
Meet David Axelrod and Barack Obama, circa 2004:
Axelrod is known for operating in this gray area, part idealist, part hired muscle. It is difficult to discuss Axelrod in certain circles in Chicago without the matter of the Blair Hull divorce papers coming up. As the 2004 Senate primary neared, it was clear that it was a contest between two people: the millionaire liberal, Hull, who was leading in the polls, and Obama, who had built an impressive grass-roots campaign. About a month before the vote, The Chicago Tribune revealed, near the bottom of a long profile of Hull, that during a divorce proceeding, Hull’s second wife filed for an order of protection. In the following few days, the matter erupted into a full-fledged scandal that ended up destroying the Hull campaign and handing Obama an easy primary victory. The Tribune reporter who wrote the original piece later acknowledged in print that the Obama camp had “worked aggressively behind the scenes” to push the story. But there are those in Chicago who believe that Axelrod had an even more significant role — that he leaked the initial story. They note that before signing on with Obama, Axelrod interviewed with Hull. They also point out that Obama’s TV ad campaign started at almost the same time. Axelrod swears up and down that “we had nothing to do with it” and that the campaign’s television ad schedule was long planned. “An aura grows up around you, and people assume everything emanates from you,” he told me.

Trust me. I am struggling with this issue myself. And you better believe that if Obama did choose Clinton - the GOP would be pounding away at this argument in the general. But....
1. Who cares. The GOP can make this argument all they want - but if Obama keeps his supporters and Clintons most of Clintons - how can he be stopped.
2. I agree changing the politics in Washington is one of Obama's main goals. But I think he can still acheive that as President. As I have said, a good President can set the tone in Washington.
3. Obama is not naive. Although he wants to change politics - he realizes that the rules of the game have not changed yet. Thus, he is going to need to "fight fire with fire" - and who better to have on the attack than Hillary Clinton. Obama can still remain above the fray and inspire everyone with his speeches - and HRC can beat back the GOP when they get out of line.
(Like I said - I am still thinking this through. But it is growing on me.)

Plus, naming Clinton as VP could also play into Obama's narrative of "new politics" like this:
"New politics" is being practical and listening to the voters - instead of listening to the media-ocracy and conventional wisdom.
This would be another example of Obama doing what the media says "he can't". It is also very practical - and I think Clinton supporters would like her at the Convention and on the ticket. And us Obama supporters would get over our hard feelings very quickly. Especially with the GOP ramping up their attacks.

Hey
It must be nice to have the luxury of being a single issue voter.
Pogo
There are more serious issues than the court system.
Divided government can provide the block you need.
But in all the issues that need to be resolved
only McCain can get them done.
McCain is not obligated to his wing nuts
as Obama is.
Remember the right wingnuts did everything in their power to oppose him.
All they can do now is sit down and shut up.
McCain will and has proved he can work with the opposition.
With McCain you will get a healthcare plan.
One that will be a compromise that includes many features that Democrats like.
With Obama, you get stalemate and fillibuster.
The same with the environment, energy policy with McCain you get a lot of input from a Democratic congress
with Obama , stalemate and fillibuster.
The most important reason to vote McCain is foreign policy.
With McCain you get a return to a pragmatic approach that leads with engagement and diplomacy.
It is a complete reversal of the Bush "lets stir things up and see what happens"
Also, in a McCain administration we won't have a debate about the definition of torture.
With Obama
"Whats foriegn policy?"
As I said I'm for divided government.
I'm glad to see conservative Democrats winning in Miss.
But don't believe that means a far left liberal, like Obama, will get many votes in the same district.
It is not happening.
Friends don't let friends vote a straight ticket
Vote for divided government
Vote McCain

Pug - what's more important than what is purely a value judgment. I don't know what world you spend your days in, but I spend mine in the legal world, and I beg to disagree. All of the issues you mentioned are very important, and there is some merit to many of the points you make, some of which I agree with. But most issues in our govenment are issues that affect some but not all and can be fixed tomorrow if they aren't fixed today - judicial appointments last about a generation, and affect everyone. Seeing a federal judiciary go from something over 2/3 to aroudn 80% republican appointees, with a solid majority of the same on the Supreme Court scares hell out of me.
If divided government provides the "block" I supposedly need, I suggest to you that you are wrong. It might if the two sides have similar levels of resolve and provide the checks and balances envisioned by the founders - neither of which is operative in the pantywaisted congressional leadership we have now. We have divided government that has provided no such block to the insanity visited upon us by Dumya and his puppetmaster, Darth, and I see no significant change in that division or the control of it.

9/11 - TY for posting that story about Blair Hull. It's very difficult to credit Mr Axelrod's denials when the same thing happened to Sen Obama's original Republican opponent in the same campaign ... that is to say, the Chicago newspapers pursued the unsealing of his sealed divorce papers,
Not to mention that, in his original run for the State Senate, Sen Obama's campaign cleared the field of all opposition candidates by challenging voter signatures, using a copy of a newly purged voter list that none of the other candidates had.
None of this was at all illegal, but it doesn't smack of new politics.

warren, you are sounding unusually reasonable and analytical. I don't think BHO/HRC is in the cards, but you are right IMHO in one critical respect - it may be not just the most effective way, but the ONLY way to redraw the electoral college map as Dean and Axelrod apparently envision.

Warren: The advantage of a BO/HRC ticket are not just political. BO may be inspirational, but HRC is a genuine policy wonk and a really hard worker. She is that little girl in the front row who knew all the answers.
The New Yorker did a story about BO some months ago, in which an aide told the reporter this anecdote ... BO was sitting at his first meeting of the Foreign Relations committee...no reason given why he didn't leave and then come back, as a lot of Senators do, but, he sat there listening to all his colleagues and about 30 minutes in to the session, he wrote a note and passed it to his aide ... note said "just kill me now." I can't imagine HRC ever writing a note like that ... I don't think she allows herself to get bored.
Best of both worlds...he can make the speeches and do the ceremonial stuff and she can do the grunt work.

Pogo, Warren - My concern is not electability so much as it is governance. As HRC has pointed out on more than one occasion, after the inauguration the President goes into that office and is confronted with the real job. I continue to have enormous qualms about Sen Obama. Yes, charisma counts but let us try to imagine where any of us would be in our choices if Sen Obama's speeches sounded like his interview and debate responses. Seriously.
IMHO, Hillary is a female version of Al Gore. And I think millions of us would give anything if just a few more of the Naderites (now to be found online at HuffPo) had voted for Al Gore.

Warren, I'm sorry but it's a bad move. Billary represents all that is bad with politics in the heads of many voters, both Democrats and Republicans. Plus, Barack is not only trying to win the presidency, He's reshaping the Democratic Party. Billary is not part of that and her constituency can be brought in with other ways. There's always the lunatic fringe who will vote against their interests, but you can't worry about them.

But TX & IN are in the back of my mind when I think about a Quixotic vote for Hillary in the general if Obama wins the nomination, so I'll swallow hard, hold my nose and vote my issue.

Bye Bye: His voting record does not tell the whole story, since that is largely shaped by party leadership. There have been at least two occasions -- ethics reform and immigration -- where he initially signed on to compromise legislation and then withdrew his support.
My problem with Sen Obama is largely in the area of foreign policy. I do not think we can all just "get along" ... I do not think that there is a moral equivalency between the Israelis and the Palestinians nor do I think our President should risk our prestige by having tea and sarnies with Ahmedinijad, etc.

Sen. Obama is drawing the moderates and Blue Dogs. And GOP and independents.
It's Hillary who, in the immortal words from Spinal Tap, finds that her "appeal is becoming more selective."
Obama won Utah, North Dakota, Missouri (a squeaker, admittedly), Virginia easily and a lot of states now in play that would not be with Clinton as nominee.
Your continued derision says more about you gals than about the candidate you disdain.

If it were me or if it was any of the Senators whose work I know and trust -- left or right or center -- I would be holding hearings.
Wasn't that the JOB of the Democratic members of Congress elected to the new MAJORITY?
To hold hearings?
To publicize failures and expose issues and dangers in the world?
That you would allow Bush's inadequacies to justify the failure of a Senator to do the job his constituents and then his own party and colleagues chose him to do...
That's just not terribly right, Warren.
Think about it.

Sorry Mag, but you're going to have to get used to a candidate with very distinct policy difference than a Republican. No more claiming that one is a "centrist" or "independent", two of the biggest crocks in politics. There are no "centrists" or "independents". When you ask people real questions, they give real answers. In our desperation for power, too many Democrats lost faith in our core principles. That's why Billary didn't understand that her Iraqi vote was going to hurt her. Billary were used to having it both ways, but meaning nothing. The electorate said no and now she's out. This is a new day, y'all.
Posted by: Bye Bye Billary | May 13, 2008 4:48 PM
9/11:
I think you should be holding hearings and exposing issues when you have a President who is willing to listen.
When a President has made quite clear that he will not back down - no matter what the voters or Congress say - I think pointing out failures simply provides fodder for our enemies and the media.
If I was in Congress - I would be trying to work the back channels with Bush - since he almost always does the complete opposite of what the Congress asks him to do publicly.
dog:
Explain to me the type of voter - that would not vote for Obama just because he names Hillary as his VP?
Posted by: warren
| May 13, 2008 4:49 PM
Warren: I do wonder about the idea of "new politics" ... what does it consist of? We are discussing millions of people, each with his/ her own separate ideas.
How do you sweetly reason with someone who feels that the absence of prayer in schools or the teaching of evolution is a mortal sin? How do you get people to recognize that cops sometimes gun down innocent citizens by mistake or because they just heard about a brother officer shot in the line of duty.
These issues ... and so many more ... are very real and emotional for many people. No matter how reasonable Sen Obama may be, the millions of people who vehemently disagree with his positions are not going to just agree to disagree silently.
And if you mean that Sen Obama might be willing to compromise on some of these social issues, then he will incur the wrath of his own party ... I believe Sen Kennedy is still smarting over Pres Clinton signing the welfare reform bill.

Posted by: dog hussein dog | May 13, 2008 12:29 PM
Dog, you are correct that we shouldn't be dumping on the Obama supporters, but the insults at Hillary and her supporters aren't just "perceived". The attacks are relentless, mean-spirited and divisive... No I don't mean just in this blog (we are all trying to get along) but on the MSM as well. We've witnessed the coronation of Barack Obama declared from the day the Iowa caucus results were announced. With 50 some states that would offend anyone's sensibilities, except those of the candidate already proclaimed the winner.
When I read things from Skylark, "bye bye', Nash, I just want to vote for someone other than Obama! I have my resolve for unity, standing together as Democrats and someone shoves in the knife and twists and I am ready to "fall off the wagon" as it were. I think both our sides are fighting too much. But if this is a microcism of the voting public, I am worried that many Hillary supporters will indeed make good on their threats to not support Obama.
If I were an Obama supporter, I'd think smart and stop the continuous demonizing of Hillary and her supporters. It's just prudent politics, and frankly it is an example of the "new politics" that Obama is supposed to be about.

warren,
Please put the book down. Please.
You keep justifying his record -- some of which is good, some of which is quite good, some of which is made of disturbing errors of commission and of omission.
I cannot recall your once having been critical of choices he has made or has evaded.
You went so far today as to defend his notable failure to hold hearings on European Affairs with a George Bush based justifcation. ("Don't worry dude -- woulda been worthless -- the dude is FUCKED.")
Can you put down the book -- which is a piece of adroit marketing -- and look at what might be ahead for the nation --
Not based on his blend of personal history and mythology...
But on his acts whether good, not so good or bad.
Optimism ain't smart, warren. Not everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds --
Particularly when you just wrote off a major duty of a Senator and the Senate because Bush wouldn't listen.

Give me a freaking break 9/11.
Pardon me for not seeing the benefit for a bunch of Congressman sitting around listening to a bunch of information they should already know in the first place.
And yes - I do think a scathing report that simply points out the flaws of the other side is worthless unless someone is willing to act on the information.
However, you seem quite fond of critizing others - and like some others on this board - you think criticism is an end in itself.
Obama has put forward "ideas" and "solutions" to move forward with respect to Foreign Policy. And every suggestion he has made that broke with conventional wisdom - has been spot on. And they are usually positions that I have either thought myself - or heard Foreign Policy experts - outside of Washington - make time and time again.
Optimism is smart. Especially realistic optimism.
It ain't hard to sit around being cynical saying "things will never change". So why don't you just keep doing that - and the rest of us will take over.

Well he just proved he has no understanding of the current economics of the US (or his too rich advisors forgot about).
Half of the families in the US have an income of 49,000 a year or less. More than half of those pay absolutely no taxes. Giving them a tax cut will do nothing to assist them in any way.
Even more important, it is cheaper to allow people to live in subsidized poverty than it is to put them to work even at things such as the old WPA that would benefit the country's infrastructure or the WWII subsidized child care than makes work possible.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Household_income_in_the_United_States
Because of all the money we have piled on to the debt, there is no more to borrow to pay for the rebuilding. Pie in the Sky Naivete ... he needs someone who understands the economy on the ticket, because he doesn't.

And McCain says he is going to pay with everything by cutting earmarks. I am all for cutting earmarks - but that is not going to be enough.
Keeping the Bush tax cuts for people that do need a tax cut - and were not even asking for one - will wipe out billions that could be put to work.
And yes - drawing down troops from Iraq will mean that will can cut some of the billions and billions being spent OVER there (i.e., not here). And even if that only stops us from borrowing money, which increases the deficit and drives down the value of the dollar (which in turn means it costs more dollars to buy a barrell of oil) - that is a hell of a lot more than McCain is proposing.

warren,
That is the role of a Senator.
That is the role of a committee or sub-committee chairman.
Obama didn't have to become an elected Senator if he didn't like what the job obligated him to do.
So if all of this was too conventional for Barack... why didn't he decline to run for Senate?
Why didn't he decline that chairmanship?
Others could have used his office to do a great deal more than brand himself as a presidential candidate.
Others could have used that chairmanship to hold meaningful hearings.
I can tell you I know over forty diplomats, business executives, financial leaders, religious leaders and NGO administrators who were so damn eager to appear before a committee to publicize what they were directly experiencing in their dealings with the Kremlin, the gas and oil industries, Iran, former Soviet states, etc.
I heard over the weekend from my dear friend Yussi who told me about a local head of a Russian Federation regional Hillel (which Yussi founded) who was nearly beaten to death by a dozen Russians aided and abetted by two policemen.
It's far from the first time I have heard this. And now the Times has reported on how entrenched this policy has become and how well it is used by Putin to increase his power and popularity.
Now as for this potential war with Georgia...
No one knew what was about to happen with Georgia in the media, warren.
Don't you know how little time is spent in the media on international affairs?
Haven't you read how many foreign affairs staffs have been cut, moved elsewhere or eliminated?
Given the importance of these actions to both Eastern and Western Europe and the lack of response by the White House, hearings needed to be held.
However, I was told that this was coming and where it would take place on the map to the sliver of a disputed region by eight people two months ago.
I wrote letters to my representatives. I wrote the White House. I wrote to a lot of people and places.
So did others.
The Bush adminstration was not interested.
So everyone should just shut up?
So hearings don't matter?
Warren, you should meet Henry Waxman.
If anyone is the cynic here... it is you about government and its functions.
If you were around during Watergate... would you have not investigated the President because he would not have listened?
As for "conventional wisdom"....
That is a broad stroke of dull paint.
You're a talented writer: you can do better with your terms.
Please let me explain to you the first definition of a word you adore as I was taught it.
Optimism means to believe that every action, every inaction, every thought, every cruelty, everything destroyed is for the best.
Do you truly believe that everything is for the best?
Why don't you just use the word "positive" instead?
Also, optimism cannot be blended intellectually with realism, warren.
No more than acids can be blended with bases.
But don't ask me.
Ask Voltaire.
Just so you know I have heard your remarks about conventional politics and thinking before.
But not from you.
Your vision of Obama's forsaking of conventional wisdom is troublingly resonant with the bright young right wing guys I used to meet down at Salmagundi at a friend's behest as they praised Governor Bush for his indifference to... conventional knowledge and practice.
All they wound up with was his... indifference to everything -- lives, truth, history, the Constitution.
Warren, I like and respect you.
I've told you that many times.
I am no cynic about you either.
But as you declared me to be one....
I will become personal in my information.
Divulging now in process...
Given what I have faced in my life and what I keep producing under really dire cirumstances... no cynic would survive this as it is ongoing and requires acts of faith.
Not of blind faith and not of faith in any particular outcome --
Just faith.
I have done a lot with my life that you have not yet -- and I make no claim on knowing how you would live it out.
I'd bet real money you would.
However, you tell me when you have been nominated for a couple of Pulitzers, shortlisted for a MacArthur and raised a kid who was abandoned and then nearly murdered -- then homeschooled her through almost six years of 14 to 21 day chemo cycles while she was sick and in pain.
None of that has made me a cynic.
A cynic wouldn't spend six hours a week in pediatric cancer wards raising spirits and sharing understandings.
A cynic wouldn't remain a volunteer school teacher for writing even when his own kid got shafted by the system.
And a cynic wouldn't answer you.
But you're worth answering.
As I wrote, I do like and respect you.
You're intelligent, passionate, diversified and full of life.
That means you're worth challenging.
You see, I challenge people the same as I challenge myself and let my collaborators, family and friends challenge me.
It ain't a bad life.
And it keeps a person from losing belief when something they bet their heart on turns out to be, well, just like a lot of other things that go down and rise and go down again.
You just learn to temper belief with history, observation and a different, more enduring form of commitment.

My goodness, warren.
Harvard-Harvard Obama did not know all of this prior to being elected?
What does that mean, warren?
Does that mean Obama was so naive that when he was elected Senator he was the real life version of Jefferson Smith? He didn't know what the job was when he took the oath?
Or does that make him.... gasp... someone who used one of his state's two seats in the Senate to promote himself into another office instead of serving the people who elected him?
As what Obama would have then done would be to let the ends justify the means --
Which is the virtual kama sutra of cynicism.
Also...
What if he turns out to be the same about the Presidency that he is about the Senate?
Does what he wants to do? And only what he wants to do?
Very Bush league stuff if so.
But then again.... maybe your reading all of this as a Joseph Campbell journey...
And I'm parsing through it as, say, it was H.L. Mencken, Theodore Dreiser or Sinclair Lewis.

We evacuated the area for about an hour. The smoke traveled through our building. Som people were wearing masks over their mouths or covering up their mouths with their shirt collars because the smoke was so bad. 3 women were complaining about how bad the smoke was. They covered their mouths as they walked through the building. Then they went outside to smoke a few cigarettes. LOL!

Heather .. I support you and your strong voice for Hillary.. now it's time to think write-in vote..
I have been very troubled by the lack of DNC and Party elder support for Hillary particularly when she runs stronger against McCain in the electoral college.. troubled by the Obama camp trashing the Clinton presidency and labeling Bill as a racist.. troubled by the vast network that Obama seemed to build when the cost is so prohibitive.. even for him$$.. troubled by the fact that delegates were switching only one way to BO.
The only one with that much power is Howard Dean. He ran for DNC chair with massive Clinton opposition.. After he won..he decided to highjack the Party. He went down South to open offices and outposts.. then went West to do the same. He needed a candidate that would mobilize the Southern vote to snag an electoral college state or two for his “new” electoral map and new paradigm of Dem voter. He sold out the working class rust belt Dem, as too unreliable. He figured the women would come like lemmings after the convention. He hand picked Obama and then lent his network, his Deanics and massive internet base from his own run for Pres., and he probably strong armed a delegate or two to support BO by mentioning that they would get an opponent. Obama has had the power of the establishment behind him. not Hillary
What Dean didn’t count on was the ferocious and loyal support Hillary would get and keep. So now it our turn to take back our Party. KENNEDY, KERRY, RICHARDSON ET AL…. CAN STUFF IT
REVOLT!!
Write in Hillary.. vote Dem down ticket for a veto proof Congress. And stop the party hats from going ‘round

Meg..Yes. mail in election.l.
But..about 40% are hand delivered on the Monday and Tuesday of the election..Even more on the days earlier.
Many are the late deciders who usually go with Hillary.
I won't pretend Obama doesn't have the lead here,,but we are energized and will back Hillary through the convention if necessary.
Pollsters don't understand the impact of Bill Clinton here..very popular and he has been everywhere in the sstate.
