here's the speaking order (4,000 in attendance for an event that was originally planned for 500):
"Gov candidate State Sen. Kay Hagan, speaks after Clinton. She'll be followed by gubernatorial candidate State Treasurer Richard Moore and remarks from Gov. Mike Easley. Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama will be last to the lectern."
Well Corey you keep plugging away at posting comments on Obama's youtube site, think of it like trying to find a woman to date, maybe one day you'll get lucky and not be rejected.
Jamie: I believe that I heard Clinton say that she was going to ban the private contractors in Iraq. Could be wrong on this...just going from what I remember.
That would literally wipe out half of the forces in Iraq. Bush has been milking the American public to pay off his buddies in more ways than one. The Army trains them and Blackwater hires them at four times the salary and the U.S. Government pays for it all.
It should be Clinton/Obama but if not then Obama deserves to have his choice of VP. If he takes the nomination then a good way to get away from her would be a promise of the first Supreme Court nomination. The Senate would give her a swift confirmation and she would give Scalia hell.
If she really wanted to straighten out america she'd come down here and hire me to make her some cabinets......THAT would put the good old USA on the right track, by golly........
Ally
to ban private contractors would take a reorganization of our military.
They are integrated into everything they do. The same applies to the State department. It's a dirty little secret that nobody is talking about.
There really should be a program to support and encourage artisans. Even Japan has its "Living Legends" who are paid simply to create what is beautiful because beauty is valuable. England is doing the same to bring back the old arts of cabinet making and woodwork.
State Sen. Kay Hagan appears to be in a strong position against the other top Democrat, businessman Jim Neal. A survey released Monday by Public Policy Polling indicated that Hagen leads Neal 36 percent to 8 percent. And according to the candidates’ pre-primary filings with the Federal Election Commission, as of April 16, Hagen had spent more than three times as much money as Neal ($1.2 million to $349,000) on the race.
Both candidates, however, trail significantly behind Dole, who raised $6.7 million as of April 16, has spent $3.8 million so far and maintains strong approval ratings. Dole’s sole GOP opponent, Peter Di Lauro, has not filed campaign finance reports with the FEC and is not expected to present a challenge in the primary.
Michael Savage led off his radio show tonight with a clip from Obama's new pastor - Otis Moss III. He is more trouble for Obama if this story gets traction in MSM.
Max has pounded the nutso right wing slander of Obama, Ayers and the Woods Fund. Here is a well written article explaining what and who the Woods Fund is and their connection to both Obama and Ayers.
"Both parties are locked in tight battles for the open-seat gubernatorial race, but fundraising totals bear out the strong motivation among Democrats to retain the seat from Gov. Michael F. Easley , who cannot run again due to term limits.
Democratic Treasurer Richard Moore and Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue (no relation to Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue ) each have raised more money than four of their Republican opponents combined, according to the candidates’ reports to the North Carolina Board of Elections.
Polling indicates Perdue holds a comfortable lead over Moore, but the margin has narrowed in recent weeks.
Perdue reported raising $8.3 million and has spent $7.5 million while Moore reported raising $8.1 million and has spent $8.2 million as of April 19, the date of the most recent campaign finance reports. State Sen. Fred Smith led the Republican field but raised less than half as much — $3.5 million as of April 19 — while seven-term Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory reported raising $1.2 million. The two other major candidates, businessman Bill Graham and former state Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr, trailed with $370,000 and $304,000 respectively."
Remember 25 years ago when she was somewhat at her height. She would start speaking (which she does well) and all the women recognized her for what she was and all the men had their tongues on the floor. Oh well, Huffington had to learn from someone.
Fox News/Greta Van Susteran: 10 p.m. ET--- John Murtagh. He was 9 years old when the Weather Underground tried to kill him and his family on February 21, 1970
Small aggravation quibble because it makes me do the fingernails on the blackboard screech every time he does it: Would it kill him to learn to say "To" instead of "Ta"?
They must all go to the same doc, for the tucks and lifts. There is a certain "Washington look" to the overall appearance, as opposed to the " LA look."
Scary, but seems to be acceptable and the norm.
It's like pro sport coaches, they all have the same hair, "coach hair" ...except Pat Reilly (of coarse)
will be interesting to see if he returns the favor to HRC's statement in her speech here that she'll "work her heart out" for Obama if he's the nominee
also listening to see if he takes any shots at her -- didn't hear her take any at him
Craig-
Either the campaign has been more stressful than he lets on, or the Wright fiasco is really eating at him or he has no time to get his "rinse" but when I saw him in SF a month ago, his hair was primarily black.
~Gidget
Go Col. John!
Obama just said he has been campaigning for 15 months....then next paragraph he says "politicians don't get anything done they just worry about getting elected"
The woman who wrote the last book to come out on Clinton (cannot remember her name). She certainly was not a Clinton fan, said it was true that Hillary did not support Nafta . I t was Bill's idea.
Damn it. Talk about aggravating. She would be the best President. He should be President in training and we just could get stuck with him before he is ready.
If Obama wants to regulate incomes of executives, I do not understand how he thinks he can accomplish this task of over- riding the stockholders of a public traded company.
He'll get absolutely no where with a privately held company.
I think that is "executive salary talk " is just sound bite bait for the lower income worker.
There is some evidence that Clinton was less enthusiastic about NAFTA than her husband. Two of her biographers, Carl Bernstein and Sally Bedell Smith, said that she was wary about pushing NAFTA because of its potential to interfere with her attempts to get her health plan through Congress, a much higher priority for her. According to Bedell Smith, "Hillary was really prepared to try and kill NAFTA."
Craig & Jamie.
I apologize if you thought I was not being nice.
Thought Hank Hill was a politician I should have recognized. googled it after no one would answer. I have never ever seen the Hill show or Beavis & Butthead.
" "executive salary talk " is just sound bite bait for the lower income worker"
Burrito, It can also work as a "shame" tactic. If the Bully Pulpit known as the presidency starts pointing out the most egregious and flagrant "golden parachutes" or salaries, the corporations could start wilting.
It is only the fact that they all sit on each other boards that has driven up the CEO salaries and it is rediculous that the top 1/10th or 1 percent make as much as the bottom 50% of earners. Someone has to say SHAME SHAME SHAME
well i don't know if i'm just used to him or what, but that wasn't as powerful as his Iowa JJ speech, which was one of the best i've ever heard from any politician. it's almost as if he's getting tired of his own words. cant understand why they don't give him more new material
Hillary is definitely "most improved" since the early days, but this format not her strength. still, she had a lot more specifics and seemed much more comfortable
that's a wrap, that was fun. on to my DVD of No Country for Old Men (oh my, how i hate that title)
Maybe the attack is that Obama wants to end it. "Close the deal" as they say. Show he's tough enough to go against McCain. Or maybe he is worried. Can't say.
Like a fool I went and stayed too long
Now I'm wondering if your love's still strong
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours!
Then that time I went and said goodbye
Now I'm back and not ashamed to cry
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours!
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
I've done a lot of foolish things
That I really didn't mean, didn't I?
Seen a lot of things in this old world
When I touch them, they mean nothing, girl
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours!
Oowee baby, you set my soul on fire
That's why I know you're my heart's only desire
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
Craig: I literally just finished watching No Country for Old Men about 10 minutes ago. I didn't like it nearly as much as Fargo, which surprised me. All of my friends LOVED it and said it was just as good as Fargo, if not better. For me, Frances McDormand is a pretty tough act to follow. She's da bomb.
Jack: Maybe so. And those are the same messages she has been driving home since the first stump speech I saw her give on July 3, 2007 at the University of Iowa and then again on July 4, 2007 in Cedar Rapids. And then many additional times throughout Iowa the rest of the year.
I didn't bother watching his (although I did DVR it). Figured if there was something unusual or worthwhile, it would be noted here and I would go back and look at it. (Time markers would be helpful.)
Everyone on this blog needs to realize that having the different opinions is what makes it interesting and fun. If we all thought exactly alike this would absolutely be a total bore.
So, I for one, am thankful for the opposing viewpoints.
THE 'COJONES' PRIMARY - WHERE CLINTON IS STOMPING OBAMA
"A Fox News poll released Wednesday found that 61 percent of Democrats describe Clinton as "tough," but only 23 percent say that about Obama.
The boys are swooning. The president of an Indiana steelworkers local union introduced Clinton as the "individual with [the] testicular fortitude" to deal with the nation's problems.
In his endorsement of Clinton, North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley enthused, "This lady right here makes Rocky Balboa look like a pansy." In an ad, the governor gushes more: "She is so resilient, so determined. She knows how to deliver."
After the ABC debate, National Review Online's Jim Geraghty wrote of her: "I like the cut of your jib, senator. It's like watching a linebacker perfectly execute a blitz and flatten a quarterback from the blind side. It's brutal, and tough to watch when it's your guy being hit, but it's within the rules and almost artistic when it's perfectly executed."
burrito that doesn't seem to be an attitude shared by your fellow Clinton supporters, just scroll up. I think you will also notice that there is not one derogatory comment made about Senator Clinton.
All supporters of one or the other candidate are not all the same. I hope as we get into the general there will be McCain supporters here as well, not because I want him to have support, but it would be interesting to hear how and what they think.
How can there ever be peace if everyone wants to disrespect differences?
Think about the middle east, they aren't arguing over political choices, they are fighting over death, and money, rights, injustice, and land. And we expect them to somehow find a peaceful resolution....
Wouldn't it be something if McCain showed up for the Sunday , This week, show with Hillary? It is said he is taking the weekend off in Arizona..
It would sure help her and undercut Obama. just wishful thinking.
So you all thought you would escape the reply to the comments left in the wake of my post about Obama's conservative mother.
Let us be honest for just a moment. Obama did portray his mother as conservative, yes? We are all clear about that as he elevated his mother and her conservative nature in his appeal to Iowa. In what sense does OBAMA use the word conservative here? Is this actually the twisting of the meaning to hide the opposite of conservative? Isn't this exactly what many here object to, that Obama is disingenuous? Doesn't he do this when taking no objections to LINK being a "moderate" bunch of people his church affiliates with? Or that Moss is a fine preacher? Link is hardly moderate and Moss defends Wright. Or don't you give a crap?
Flatus, the NYT made mention that ANN was not ever drawn to white boys with short hair. What exactly do you think my McCarthyism is based on, this fact? That I posted an article that summarizes several other articles about Ann Dunham, but takes issue with characterizing her as conservative?
Mercer High School...give me a break. Tell me what was wrong in the article I posted. And Ann's friends know exactly what she was chasing in life and it wasn't conservative in the least. So how was that post I left in the last thread a lie? What documents were produced to confirm she married Obama Sr.? Did he pay child support? Why did he leave and what political theories did he believe? And her next husband wasn't a white guy either, so are you suggesting she wasn't drawn to non-white men her whole life, that she had no inclination towards communism? Now none of this is a crime, but to cast his own mother as a simple conservative white woman is the typical BS we have come to know issuing from Obama. This kind of fictionalizing one's entire life goes way beyond Bosnian sniper fire.
So you all tell me what was so disturbing about the article on Obama's mother. That is wasn't true? Point out the factual errors, or are we to give Obama a free pass when he twists the truth and nails Hillary to the cross about her Goldwater inclinations or her assistance to the Black Panthers...LOL? I thought you all were so determined to let facts trump spin. Why the hell do you think Obama's father was communistically inclined, because he too was a conservative? Why do you think Frank Davis came to be Obama's first mentor, because he was a conservative capitalist? Are you saying that from day one, Obama wasn't exposed to about as left an education you can get, mother, father, early mentor. The poor kid was indoctrinated. And look what he says NOW about his mother's role in shaping his views. And he says the same for Wright. He mentions Davis's influence, not JFK or the Pope. These are the figures OBAMA says shaped him, gave him direction and spiritual knowledge. Sorry if I find this a bad joke. Two atheists and a preacher who believes Jesus was a Black Palestinian.
So when someone says what the media is too afraid to explore, some suggest I am McCarthy. I thought truth trumps fear. I am not afraid of what really influenced Obama, but obviously he has gone to great lengths with the support of media to hide who his mentors really were and what they believed. Their views are not criminal or perverse (well most Americans would not like reading some of Davis's poetry, especially the one about Jesus being an N-word)), but Obama has created a fiction to hide facts because HE IS afraid Americans will not like what HE said most informed him. They certainly are not happy with Wright. And they are not going to be pleased to learn more about his mother after Obama has spun her as conservative after bascially throwing his grandma under the bus, before he threw his wacko preacher of a mentor.
Crazy, is that the best crap you can counter with? That I am crazy and verbose? How about refuting anything I said. Naw, that would strain your brain too much.
Still think Obama's mother was conservative? His father? His first Mentor who pointed to way to Chicago?
Please dear scholar, tell us who Obama's mother dated or married. Tell us all why she quickly fled Kansas and loved Mecer High School. As soon as she could she fled the US as Obama's father fled his wife and children.
You got nothing. zero. zip. nada. My version is closer to the truth than Obama's own version is OWN life. He recast it for political reasons as all he really has done is seek higher office from day one. Form without substance on the verge of winning the primary. What that says about the Democratic Party would be too long to type.
I know something about you Brian. When you post replies like the one above, you have no ammo. You attack the messenger and try to say it is "silly season". I guess Obama didn't find Wright so silly and there is still much that make him frown. Wake up, it is a fiction and as Wright suggests, not nearly as rhetorical gifted as MLK or firery as Malcolm X.
Yes We Can...my Russian friends laugh every time they here that. Such irony is not lost on them.
Well, Brian you are too predictable to be entertaining. Let me point some things out to you. Ann's former teacher said he was surpised to learn Ann got married and had a child. He describes that as a radical concept. It sheds some light on her teacher's view point. If you check out Mercer School you will find the orginal article I posted accurate in the number of teachers who sported communsit ideas which must have been a bit alarming give the proximity to Boeing...LOL
OD, what is to disagree with? The Press has been careful in characterizing Ann, though for her time she was extremely radical, wanted to go to Chicago, didn't date whie men, joined the Unitarian Church and married the first Black student attending her university. Obama characterizes this a "my conservative mom". What utter rubbish. You see that I am not attacking communism as some horrible evil Ann should have been jailed for gravitating towards or that she prefered to live abroad rather relish America, but that Obama hides his history because he knows it won't appeal to the center. He rather create a fiction about his life because like his grandfather he is a salesman. He has to sell himself and his unique capacities and vision. The truth would shake the credibility of that message. He wants to be as apple pie as he can and he consciously strove in his climbing the political ladder to nuture his Leftist support while fictionalizing about his historical influences. For those of us who think facts count more than unsupported imagination, this essential and calculated dishonesty goes unopposed by the supposed intellectual media and affluent Liberal base. And Michelle? Just read her conclusions at the end of her thesis. Separatists canre more for the black community than integrationists because they must divide their attention between considering the while AND black communities and often have no clue about what really troubles the poor black community. It is really quite a work. These two do not deserve to take the White House, but as Rez says, they are better than Bush. Unfortunately for him, McCain is running not Bush and there is still a chance Democrats will wake up and see the charade. At least Hillary is real. As we see above, Obama is a greater part fiction, informed by people he did not truthfully describe. Wright was right about a few things. One was that Obama will say whatever it takes to get elected. He has been doing that his whole life.
Just watching Mr Obama's J&J speech on c-span. When he starts the rapid blinking does that mean he's equivocating? As an example, when he says he doesn't take money from lobbyists or special interests.
Equivocating? I have no idea. I haven't see the speech, but I don't find Obama convincing at all. I have too many doubts about this guy.
This reminds me of a Rolling Stone article that Hunter Thompson wrote about Jimmy Carter when he was first running. The title was something like Jimmy Carter's Law Day Speech and the Great Leap of Faith. Thompson basically endorsed Carter in that article. Well Carter is a nice man but was a mediocre president. It seems like so many are making a great leap of faith about Obama without really examining his competencies and his background.
It shows that Mr Obama, during the first quarter, outstripped Mrs Clinton and Mr McCain in contributions from the groups he says he doesn't take money from.
Flatus, the WSJ article seems to have a POV that Obama is being legitimized with these corporate donations. But like you, I thought about how his campaign touts his small donations, no corporates, etc. as if he is some how the purer candidate, when the opposite is true. Is Obama a fraud?
Jamie (this is off the subject but relevant to the day)
You crawdads are too damn nice to newbies like me. Why didn't someone correct me on Monba? He's
not Cuban. Gayego is! And after making a fool of myself waxing poetic in pidgeon espanol.
What do I do now: switch to the nostalgic choice tho he's not going to win (poor post position)? reject and renounce? Better yet, go with the filly..she'll work her heart out and she used to the mud.
Go Eight Belles Go!
Good morning all. I hope I made my point last night despite those awful typos. Now imagine Obama starting off his autobiography with "My mother was a communist that prefered living abroad and dating non-whites, my father was also a communist and left when I was five, my first mentor was a communist and wrote some horrible poetry....."
The truth would scare the crap out of America. Now I am partial to unconventional people and Obama could have explained his life's influences. He could have dealt with them head on, but he prefered to bury the facts, filter them and dress them up in books designed to be the guide for his Presidential campaign. He then tried to influence voters calling his mom, conservative. The real audacity is that he thought "we the people", even us LIberal ones would not look beyond his phony declarations. He takes us for fools and calls vetting a distraction.
The hieght of his arrogance and his wife's is that such distractions they claim, are hurting us people and our dreams, hope and future, by derailing his campaign. This is where the Messiah BS comes in. Well Senator Obama, elections put candidates on trial, not the other way around. This race is about YOUR character, YOUR record and history, YOUR associations and policies, not whether the people are being unfair to examine YOU.
I am astounded that everywhere you turn, Obama's autobiography, his claims about his record and funding, his associates and mentors, his policies when vetted against his past declarations, one finds contradictions, lies and deflections. This is what makes him unqualified for office, not whether his mother or dad were actually communists. HE has destroyed his own credibility in attempts to win the WH by selling himself. That was the point in rehashing the life of Ann Dunham, not that a father, mother and mentor inevitably shape a person. We all still possess the capacity to move beyond our environment and seek to remake ourselves. The subsequent track record of Obama however, is quite weak.
The only thing silly would be for us to ignore Obama's profound and troubling disingenunity until he and Pelosi reveal the extent of we the people have allowed through our lack of seeking the truth.

A 70-year-old Texas Rancher got his hand caught in a gate while working cattle. He wrapped the hand in his bandana and drove his pickup to the doctor. While suturing the laceration, the doctor asked the old man about George W. Bush being in the White House.
The old Texan said, "Well, ya know, Bush is a 'Post Turtle.'"
Not knowing what the old man meant, the doctor asked what a Post Turtle was.
The old man looked at him and drawled, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a Post Turtle."
The old man saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain:
"You know he didn't get there by himself, he doesn't belong there, he can't get anything done while he's up there, and you just want to help the poor dumb bastard get down."
Gee Sturg, that was quite a story. Never heard Bush called a turtle before, but I have heard him called a poor dumb bastard. Thanks for that enlighening us.
"It is our duty as Americans, as Republicans and as patriots to live up to the ideals of our party,” Walberg said. “People respond to leadership, but it mustn’t flow from airy slogans of hope and change.”

That was from a brief article in my old hometown paper , The Daily Telegram.
Flats' WSJ link led to another of their video links featuring the "Royal Bloodline" of every horse in today's field...all traced back to Native Dancer of Maryland. However, no Queen Elizabeth II in attendance to truly up the royal ante as she did last year.
What about the sad truth that after January 20th, the country will, at some point, realize the election honeymoon is over and that getting out of the middle east has a snowball's chance in hell of happening.
Oh, and don't forget Patsi & Burrito: Another racist old "typical" white woman who was probably doped up at the time on prescription pills. Most typical.

to ban private contractors would take a reorganization of our military.
They are integrated into everything they do. The same applies to the State department. It's a dirty little secret that nobody is talking about.

background from CQ on the NC senate race:

CQ on NC gov race (current speaker is Moore):

STEVIE WONDER LYRICS
"Signed, Sealed, Delivered"
Like a fool I went and stayed too long
Now I'm wondering if your love's still strong
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours!
Then that time I went and said goodbye
Now I'm back and not ashamed to cry
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours!
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
I've done a lot of foolish things
That I really didn't mean, didn't I?
Seen a lot of things in this old world
When I touch them, they mean nothing, girl
Oo, baby, here I am, signed, sealed, delivered, I'm yours!
Oowee baby, you set my soul on fire
That's why I know you're my heart's only desire
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)
Here I am baby
Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm yours
(You got my future in your hands)

That I posted an article that summarizes several other articles about Ann Dunham, but takes issue with characterizing her as conservative?
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politics/2004334057_obama08m.html

Max if you're going to be crazy and verbose can't you at least try to be entertaining or interesting about it.

Did Reverend Wright actually say that Obama will say whatever it takes to get elected?
Posted by: EuroTom
| May 3, 2008 2:06 AM
Rev. Wright basically said that Obama says what he has to say because he is a politiian.
The implication was that Obama agrees with Wright.
I think Wright is a nut.
It is unfortunate, whatever qualities Obama has, he is unelectable in November.

Just watching Mr Obama's J&J speech on c-span. When he starts the rapid blinking does that mean he's equivocating? As an example, when he says he doesn't take money from lobbyists or special interests.
Posted by: Flatus
| May 3, 2008 6:40 AM
Equivocating? I have no idea. I haven't see the speech, but I don't find Obama convincing at all. I have too many doubts about this guy.
This reminds me of a Rolling Stone article that Hunter Thompson wrote about Jimmy Carter when he was first running. The title was something like Jimmy Carter's Law Day Speech and the Great Leap of Faith. Thompson basically endorsed Carter in that article. Well Carter is a nice man but was a mediocre president. It seems like so many are making a great leap of faith about Obama without really examining his competencies and his background.

"It seems like so many are making a great leap of faith about Obama without really examining his competencies and his background."
I can't agree more. The competencies thing hasn't been explored at all; the background is now being explored, to the dismay of many.
After I wrote my comment with the remark about not taking money from lobbyists, et al., I sat down at the breakfast table and found this article in this morning's Journal:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120977495306264221.html?mod=special_page_campaign2008_topbox
It shows that Mr Obama, during the first quarter, outstripped Mrs Clinton and Mr McCain in contributions from the groups he says he doesn't take money from.

Good morning everyone.
Flatus, the WSJ article seems to have a POV that Obama is being legitimized with these corporate donations. But like you, I thought about how his campaign touts his small donations, no corporates, etc. as if he is some how the purer candidate, when the opposite is true. Is Obama a fraud?

Go Colnel John

Bush the Post Turtle
Posted by: sturgeone | May 3, 2008 9:33 AM
Gee Sturg, that was quite a story. Never heard Bush called a turtle before, but I have heard him called a poor dumb bastard. Thanks for that enlighening us.

"It is our duty as Americans, as Republicans and as patriots to live up to the ideals of our party,” Walberg said. “People respond to leadership, but it mustn’t flow from airy slogans of hope and change.”
Seventh District Rep. Tim Walberg (R)
