Obama's Victory Week Begins

| | Comments (348)

This week appears destined to be "the week that was" in Democratic politics -- the one in which the nomination frontrunner, Barack Obama, convincingly claims victory.

Only an unexpected loss in Oregon on Tuesday could shake Obama's plans to at least symbolically declare himself the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee. Even a blowout win in Kentucky on the same day is unlikely to help Hillary Rodham Clinton if she loses Oregon, no matter how small the margin.

Clinton's response to Obama's victory claim will be telling. Dropping out seems unlikely until primary season officially ends next month. Still, her silence will be construed as acceptance.

Defiance, or perhaps even anything between silence and defiance, will forecast an angry summer for Democrats if it means that Clinton intends to keep her campaign alive waiting for an unexpected catastrophe to befall Obama.

  2. I'm first a very rare occasion. So here is some humor to help start the week off right.

Subject: Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?

BARACK OBAMA: The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a CHANGE! The chicken wanted CHANGE!

JOHN MC CAIN: My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON: When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure -- right from Day One! -- that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me...

DR. PHIL: The problem we have here is that this chicken won't realize that he must first deal with the problem on ' THIS ' side of the road before it goes after the problem on the ' OTHER SIDE ' of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his ' CURRENT ' problems before adding ' NEW ' problems.

OPRAH: Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

GEORGE W. BUSH: We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us or for us. There is no middle ground here.

COLIN POWELL: Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road...

ANDERSON COOPER - CNN: We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been allowed to have access to the other side of the road.

JOHN KERRY: Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.

NANCY GRACE: That chicken crossed the road because he's GUILTY! You can see it in his eyes and the way he walks.

PAT BUCHANAN: To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.

MARTHA STEWART: No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.

DR SEUSS: Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not be en told.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY: To die in the rain. Alone.

JERRY FALWELL: Because the chicken was gay! Can't you people see the plain truth? ' That's why they call it the 'other side.' Yes, my friends, that chicken is gay. And if you eat that chicken, you will become gay too. I say we boycott all chickens until we sort out this abomination that the liberal media white washes with seemingly harmless phrases like 'the other side'. That chicken should not be crossing the road. It's as plain and as simple as that.

GRANDPA: In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough.

BARBARA WALTERS: Isn't that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart warming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish its life long dream of crossing the road.

ARISTOTLE: It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

JOHN LENNON: Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.

    BILL GATES: I have just released eChicken2007, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your check book. Internet Explorer is an integral part of the Chicken. This new platform is much more stable and will never cra...#@&&^(C% ... reboot. ; & gt;

ALBERT EINSTEIN: Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?

BILL CLINTON: I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What is your definition of chicken?

AL GORE: I invented the chicken!

COLONEL SANDERS: Did I miss one?

    DICK CHENEY: Where's my gun?

AL SHARPTON: Why are all the chickens white? We need some black chickens.

  3. Well I was first. lol.

Here is a good article that will give you some idea what BHO has in mind for The United States of America should he be elected POTUS.

"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,"

This is just part of BHO's plan for "change". The sheep still follow the farmer to the slaughter house.

  4. ROFL Fry! I actually thought the "W" one was funniest. But this one brought something to mind: "PAT BUCHANAN: To steal the job of a decent, hardworking American. "

I do think that illegal immigration and border security is a HUGE problem in the country. I've also seen a big difference in the kinds of people coming in over the last few years as opposed to earlier. People in the hispanic/latino/chicano community that I know tell me that there is a big influx of pretty tough customers from Central America that worry them.

However, I remain unsure about the so-called welfare a lot of them are receiving. I live in a heavily ethnic area, and I go to the grocery store every couple of days. I have yet to see a hispanic person use a WICA card or any sort of government assist. I see lots of whites and lots of blacks using them -- but no hispanics. They always pay in cash. Not even sure that means anything except that they don't use banks and may not be paying taxes. But they sure ain't all on welfare.

  5. If Obama claims victory in the primary after his Oregon win, it will be
premature, unless he reaches the magic delegate number. Since the Clinton campaign and Camp Obama can't seem to agree on what the winning delegate count is, Obama's claiming primary victory seems audacious and ungentlemanly. At the same moment, Hillary will be claiming a victory in
Kentucky to a probable double digit win, again, highlighting Obama's
Big Problem--he can't get the working class vote.

I thought Obama wanted to start the healing process within the Dem Party. His pushing his way to crown himself top dog won't appear very friendly to Clinton supporters.

Why shouldn't Hillary be defiant until all the states vote and
Florida and Michigan are counted? In answer to my question,I can hear all the pundits and O-bots now,
    "But, she can't win. . ."

  6. "The US has turned dramatically towards biofuels, with Congress raising the federal requirement for using the oil alternative from 6.5 billion gallons last year to nine billion gallons this year. As a consequence, about a quarter of the American corn crop was used for biofuels last year, driving up the price of corn and, hence, also the price of food for millions of families."

The above is from this article.
    http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/latestnews/You39re-running-out-of-oil.4095858.jp

Lets hope and pray there is a bumper grain harvest this year. The environmentalists are against, coal mining, burning of coal, oil drilling, oil refineries and nuclear power.
Odd that a country which has all the resources its needs, has to import most of its energy, whose price carry a 60% speculators charge, which then has to converted into by-products by fewer and fewer old out dated refineries running at near capacity 24/7. Oil is purchased by the oil companies at $125 a barrel who job it is to convert it into heating oil and gas and other by-products. If American want lower gas prices they need to prohibit speculators from entering the commodities market, they need to drill more oil here in the US and the need to build more refineries or start building new nuclear power plants, a 5 to 10 year project, but that won't happen so in the mean time enjoy that $4.00 a gallon gas, and that $5.00 box of corn flakes. Suicide by a thousand self inflicted cuts.

  8. Good morning All - Yesterday was a nice respite from the fray. No minds were changed, but at least the fever abated some.

Oregon truly interests me. After that massive rally, it will be fascinating to see the margin. I would dearly love to see under 10% if only to keep introducing Sen. Obama to humility. He might need to know about it at some point in the future.

  10. W did a wonderful thing for BO last week. Does the GOP secretly want to lose?
I have to say that the meeting BO held in South Dakota on Saturday was the best I’ve seen of him. (I find an arena full of screaming fans who are followers of a cult of personality to be quite pointless.) It was nice to hear what he had to say & to speak with people one-on-one.

However, he had to be backed into a corner before he chose sides with respect to Hamas, just as he did with Rev. Wright. (Apparently, he was also goaded into accessorizing with a flag pin, too.) He will cave to peer-pressure; he will play politics; he lacks definition.

Fry – Well, we do have to make some changes but, yeah, it’s a bit like Jimmy Carter telling us to turn our thermostats down in the winter & put on a sweater. In fact, although Carter is a wonderful humanitarian, maybe it takes someone with a bit more startch to be Prez. Things our grandparents did & we take for granted. We are spoiled & I am thankful to live here. However, imagine what the world would be like if we had put all of the money from Iraq into homeland security and energy R&D.

  18. Good Morning, again, everyone,

This morning Howard Wolfson on MoJo said there's zero chance Hillary Clinton will drop out of the race this week. He believes Obama's premature victory lap is
insulting. 'Hillary is in this race until we have a nominee and it will not be
    Tuesday," Wolfon insisted.

Currently, more voters, over 17 million, have voted for Clinton than Obama.

  22. Marcia: Bob Shrum was also on MOJO this morning and reinforced the message of the Obama campaign (and the DNC): Yes, Obama has a problem with white working-class voters. But, no worries, it isn't really a problem because he is "redrawing the map" with his millions of new voters (the "new coalition").

Tim Russert also reminded viewers this morning that the Obama campaign is quick to point out that Oregon is a "swing state" and that a Democrat must win Washington, Oregon and California to win the GE and Obama is better positioned to do that. It is completely irresponsible to spew talking points from the campaign that are simply stuck on stupid. Does anyone really think that Washington, Oregon and California will go red if Clinton is on the ticket? (Or if Obama is on the ticket?) As a resident of Oregon for 22 years and a resident of Washington for 14 years, I can reassure Tim Russert that the Pacific Northwest is safely in the blue column in the fall. I swear I don't think any of these guys have even been to Oregon in the last twenty years. They keep talking about logging?! UGH.

  24. mornin' all.

Craig, buddy, maybe this column will finally convince one of the O-supporters here that you are not in the tank for Clinton.

After considerable congitation, I have come to believe that Hillary's SD press/ FL&MI strategy will likely fall short. I have also come to believe that if Obama stops acting like he's running for class president and starts acting like he's running for POTUS, bones up on and starts talking about national security, energy, and the economy like an adult, he could very well win in the Fall. All I can say is I hope his judgment is good, he benefits from a rising economy and he has the good sense not to get involved in bullshit conflicts in the middle east.

BW, the real problem with the "sweetie" remark is that
he never answered the GD question - which I believe was his intent. The BS apology the next day did nothing IMHO to repair the dismissive response. And yes, it was sexist. Wonder how he'd have reacted to bein called boy?

(Before I became a Cavs fan - with a wife from Cleveland and a kid who worships Lebron and insists on getting his number on his jersey in every sport when he has the choice, a move in the name of domestic tranquility if nothing more - I was a huge Celts and Bulls fan. The Bird, McHale, Parrish era was wonderful, and of course with the Bulls there was that Jordan guy). The difference between the Celts and Cavs is in the number of players that can actually play the friggin' game. Lebron isn't actually on his own out there, but he ain't all that far from it. And speaking of chickens, I'll count some before they hatch - the Celts should beat the Pistons and make it to the finals - I just hope they win one or two on the road so they won't go into it with 3 straight 7 game series. I think the western conference could go any way, but my money is on Kobe & the Lakers. If I were Pierce, I'd be praying for SA to make it - worst road record of those 3.

As much as I agree that the old Bye Bye was offensive on so many levels, I appreciate the honesty and contrition in identifying himself with the new screen name. After all, he could have just started a new name with no reference to the past, and no one would have known. It seems to me that he first came on here playing a silly character as so many do on other blogs, not realizing that we try to keep that stuff to a minimum around here -- but then got stuck in his own typecast and is now trying to honor the spirit of this place. I understand if some cannot forgive, but I am giving it a try.

  50. Just being contrarian, but I am really starting to get totally fed up with the yakking news heads using lines saying it is all over for Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama is declaring victory.

Whether or not it is probable or even absolutely true, it is also extraordinarily rude and disrespectful of the voters who back Sen. Clinton.

The convention is in August. The delegate votes will be cast in August. Until those votes are actually cast, the "theoreticall count" could be 99 to 1 in his favor and he still would not be the nominee.

Declaring him the winner before the vote is taken is a diservice to the American public. At least have the good grace to say "Potential" nominee.

If Dean and MSM succeed in this theft, I'll be joining the McCain camp - none of this "We're all Dems - Let's get along" nonsense works with me. I put country ahead of political party.

I love you babe ,I love you , I love you I love"

This is what batterers tell their wives when they want them to come back,

  53. Craig: You said I understand if some cannot forgive -- a statement more profound than you may realize.
I realize that Democratic Party officials cannot admit that there may be a problem with women voters -- and, of course, many of them just think that a pro-Choice woman could never never vote for a Republican, but IMHO most of the rhetoric about Hillary supporters voting for Sen Obama in the end is as sadly dismissive as much of what has already been about all us downscale, uneducated, racist women ...
Personally, I do not intend to waste my vote on a write-in or a failure to vote...I do intend to vote for Sen McCain (who will be checked by a Democratic Congress) and I will consider that vote just as appropriate as the vote I cast for Gerald Ford in 1976.

  59. Lynn C - That refused number is interesting. I've never seen that in a published poll before. Lumping that number in with the undecided causes one to wonder what the reality is.
I would say this, however, Hillary's campaign did leave Oregon a day earlier than originally scheduled, so I would think that their internal polls probably showed that she was not gaining ground there. Still, one can always hope.

ARG hasn't had a close accuracy rate but being this alligned with Suffolk makes you wonder a bit. Since Oregon is totally by mail, early votes vs later votes could cause quite a swing.

  65. "Everyone is focused on making Oregon the state that pushes Obama over" on pledged delegates, said Nick Shapiro, Obama's spokesman in Oregon.

Still, this is a state that relishes its independence, where voters believe they're making a real difference and are mulling the decision carefully. So the door could be open for a Clinton pitch. The upside to 30 percent ballots cast is that 70 percent aren't in yet - whether for indecision or laziness - and theoretically up for persuasion.

Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski, a Clinton supporter, said earlier this month Clinton had a chance to win here, but that "Obama already has the edge." Today, this is what Clinton spokesman Isaac Baker said in a press release: "We faced an uphill battle in Oregon where Sen. Obama started with a significant lead and has outspent us nearly 2-1-- but we've campaigned aggressively throughout the state and Oregonians have responded."

  67. Allegedly in the early voting in Oregon Clinton and Obama are tied. If the late breakers follow tradition and go for Clinton this race could be very close.

    Posted by: Lynn C | May 19, 2008 10:39 AM

  68. Jamie and Lynn C - the question is, would a close loss do anything at all to change the narrative? The media and the Obama people certainly used the close loss in Indiana to his advantage, even though it was a state that his campaign originally thought it would win.

I do find it interesting that with mail-in voting a smaller percentage of voters have voted than had voted by absentee mail-in ballot by this time in California. One of the spins of the California win (despite the influx of Kennedys and the huge rallies) was that people who made up their minds early and voted for Hillary by absentee ballot would have voted differently if early mail-in ballots were not allowed. HA!

Posted by: maggisd Author Profile Page | May 19, 2008 10:39 AM

  69. Craig: So if you are "under contract" does that mean you cannot go on other cable news networks like Fox and CNN but you can do your C-Span gigs?

I really wish that MOJO would have you on while Joe is in Florida. But, I'm afraid you would be labeled by Barnicle and Mika as a Clinton apologist much the same as Pat B. has. Along with Bob Shrum they really went after him this morning.

If he would publicly, either in a speech or in an Op Ed express regret that so many of his surrogates / supporters accused the Clintons of racism and if he would also acknowledge (as per the recent piece by Peter Beinart in Time) that Bill Clinton's centrist policies actually took several GOP wedge issues off the table, things Obama might otherwise have had to contend with ... welfare, crime, affirmative action to name a few.

But he told my friend that he was sickened by two things during this campaign season. First, the sexism that went unchallenged by the Democratic powers. Second, he said that we've now seen the media take control of two election cycles, giving us George Bush and Barack Obama. He wasn't saying the two were alike -- just that it was obvious both had been annointed by the media. Despite his support for his candidate, he said it didn't bode well for this country.

  124. Pogo,
Don't know if you're still on board this am, but I don't find the "sweetie" remark to be as outrageous as others do or as offensive as say, "boy". But then that's just me.

I've lived all over the US and if "sweetie" is sexist, then what about all the women working in the service biz (restaurants and bars); since thousands have called my wife and I sweetie, hon, and sugar over the years. I agree it wasn't a good choice for him.

    Jamie,

McCain isn't the nominee either I guess. So why do we think of him as such? A couple of those repugs have only suspended their candidacies and not withdrawn or quit.

Posted by: Rezdog Author Profile Page | May 19, 2008 12:32 PM

  125. If Dean and MSM succeed in this theft, I'll be joining the McCain camp - none of this "We're all Dems - Let's get along" nonsense works with me. I put country ahead of political party. Gordo

Posted by: vadaryl Author Profile Page | May 19, 2008 12:35 PM

  128. Rez...I agree with you about the "sweetie" thing, even though I'm HRC-friendly. The place where I used to work had a cafeteria where this lovely woman used to make sandwiches, and would call her customers "baby" or "love" when she asked them what they wanted. Some uptight jerk complained about it, and she got suspended. Unbelievable. People were outraged.

Although, context is everything. I guess you can make the case that when a POWERFUL man uses uninvited familiarity with a LESS POWERFUL woman, it is a subtle effort to put her in her place.

Either way, I didn't get all that exercised about Obama saying it to the TV reporter. Most reporters worth a damn have been called things like "fuckhead" and "asshole" by newsmakers and survived. It's just considered part of the job and not "news" if it doesn't get picked up by a camera so people sitting on their asses back in the studio can pontificate about it.

Posted by: LardassLiberal Author Profile Page | May 19, 2008 12:42 PM

  131. I did not have a problem with Obama calling the reporter Sweetie, I had a problem with the media making a big deal out of it. Also when he called the reporter back why did we have to hear the call. I think the reporter or the place she worked at was trying to make a bigger deal out of it than it was. I know today everything is a big deal but that should of been between them.

Posted by: vadaryl Author Profile Page | May 19, 2008 12:46 PM

  132. No Surprise...

"Sweetie" is basically the equivalent of a 60-year-old politician whose feet are being held to the fire by a 28-year-old male reporter prefacing his comments with "Son..." or "Sonny Boy..." It's a rhetorical tactic to gain leverage. Politicians are full of them.

Annoying? Most definitely. Worthy of DEFCON 3 level outrage? I think not.

Not at all. Vote by Mail is very successful in Oregon and has been used for years. It is easier to vote this way. Obama does not lead in Oregon due to vote by mail. Every single election in the state of Oregon is conducted this way. Oregon has a very high rate of participation in all age levels.

If Obama wins in Oregon it is because the state's demographics favor him not the vote by mail.

This is from a the Oregon Secretary of State a few years ago on the success of vote by mail.

Actually the percentage of participation has gone way up in Oregon since they instituted vote by mail and is expected to be near 75%. Unlike a caucus where you have to be at a specific place at a specific time, you can mail or drop off your ballot at anytime during the election window. The elderly and disabled love it because their polling place is their mail box.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | May 19, 2008 12:52 PM

  136. On the "sweetie" business it was disrespectful, but not a major offense. More important and telling was that he NEVER answered her question either at the time or in the apology. No one has ever reported whether he got back to her as promised with the answer and interview.

The paper was right to call him on it because it was a common power play among politicians as it proved he was a dodge and weave politician like all of them.

  140. Nanny: I agree about the "Sweetie" comment but as we have lamented here so often, the sexism that permeates our society is really quite remarkable.

Guess we "womenfolk" (hehe) got pretty complacent. Looks like we still have a lot of work to do. If there is a silver lining in this protracted primary, perhaps our society will examine the sexism issues that came to light.

  141. VADaryl

I prefer the old fashioned go to your polling place aspect of voting simply because it is a community activity and we have lost so many things where the community acts as one to achieve something good.

Still OR has now had years of practice with no scandals or evidence of manipulation. They seem to have ironed out the majority of the bugs and in an era of 24 hour work schedules, limited poll volunteers who are rapidly aging out of the system, and problems with computers, the mail in system is probably the wave of the future.

It does have the advantage of a paper trail since every single ballot becomes its own vehicle to recount if necessary.

Someone in OR would have to tell me if the voter retains a copy of some sort.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | May 19, 2008 1:18 PM

  142. OK, Rez - No Surprise caught the gist of the difference and jamie drove it home - but my biggest beef is that he didn't answer her question. I will grant you that "boy" really does carry a connotation that is more than simply dismissive when used by a white person to a black male, but even as a male I recognize the dismissive message of a figure like Obama referring to a female reporter as "sweetie" and the dodge of the question. The feigned fondness and familiarity that exists between a waitress and and a customer is not analogous to a setting such as the one with a candidate and the press. And waitresses call both males and females sweetie, hon', and all those other little terms of endearment. I wonder how it would have played if Obama was on the receiving end of one of those little familiarisms - I suspect his supporters would have tried to joke it away because being outraged over a remark that is arguably dismissive, but not sexist when directed at a male would be a bit ridiculous.

I do agree with your comments about younger women. I don't want to generalize but there seems to be a lack of understanding of how difficult it was for women trailblazers in all walks of life and all types of professions in our society.

Posted by: GAKaren Author Profile Page | May 19, 2008 1:42 PM

  145. Pogo,

Thx for the reply. If you noticed, I ended my comment by agreeing that it wasn't a good choice for him, i.e. who he is and what he's doing.

I really only commented because I thought you were protesting too much by use of that unique analogy. I recognize the difference between him and service employees, but like your analogy, i mentioned it for emphasis.

Funny, that some seem to think men can't fairly discuss issue of this nature. I guess it's in our DNA to be sexist.

    Daryl,

Don't worry. He won't be the "official nominee" until after the 1st vote in Denver. So the SDs can't end it quite yet!

  148. This may sound off topic but I don't think it is.

I watch a lot of sports with my husband and son. Do you know what irks me the most while doing so? Those moronic beer commercials that show guys making up dumb excuses to be with their buddies instead of their girlfriends. Don't get me wrong some of those commercials can be entertaining (I enjoy the BudLight commercials in particular) but they speak to a larger issue. They illustrate that shabby treatment of one's wife or girlfriend is perfectly acceptable or worse ... expected.

This type of advertising mirrors our society, I guess. Now this may sound like I'm nitpicking ... but on a certain level I don't think I am. At least my son calls some of the guys in the ads "losers!" I really enjoy it when he does that.

After the results become official tomorrow and HRC has won, be aware that five to ten super delegates will immediately again say what a great leader he is and they will flock to him.
That will be frontpage and or headline news, even if HRC routs him in KY with 25+ points and keeps it close in Or
    But still,
HRC will not back down, she will continue through the final state....and persue FL and Mi.

If they are seated then she will say ( if she doesn't get the nomination) I can bow out with the notion that I have done all I could.
However, as I told you...I do not see that happening....

  153. Obama: Hold On, Sweetie
    By Jim Rutenberg

Updated Back in Pennsylvania in early April, Senator Barack Obama took some heat for calling a female factory worker “sweetie,” in Allentown.
He did it again today at a Chrysler Plant in Sterling Heights, asking a reporter to “hold on one second there sweetie” when she asked, “How are you going to help the American auto workers?”

He said he would address it at what was then an expected media availability — not soon enough.
“This sweetie never did get an answer to the question,’’ the reporter told her viewers on the local channel 7.
    Update | 6:40 p.m.
Mr. Obama called the reporter, Peggy Agar, to apologize. Her station, WXYZ in Detroit, has more.
    http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/14/obama-hold-on-sweetie/

We don't have to speculate on what happened we know what happened. He dodged the question and he uses "sweetie" regularly.

Posted by: No Surprise | May 19, 2008 2:03 PM

  154. It's What Preceded "sweetie" that matters ....

This is why the sexist remark from his own mouth was so telling and demonstrates he is part of the culture. Wome get that!!..

The deafening silence of the DNC, Howard Dean and other leading Democrats, who to my knowledge (except Sen. Barbara Mikulski) haven't uttered a word of outrage at the unrelenting, sex-based hate that has been hurled at a former first lady and two term senator form NY. Among those holding their tongue are hundreds of Democrats for whom Clinton has campaigned and raised millions of dollars. Dom Imus endured more public ire from the political class with his insults.. Bush received an earful when calling BO an "appeaser".

Would the silence prevail if Obama's likeness were put on a tap-dancing doll that was sold at airports?? Would Ted Kennedy have a tantrum if Obama said LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act which is a fact.

The hypocrisy is astounding from a Party that pretends to support women's rights.

The DNC sold out the heart and soul of the Democratic Party and says it does not need the women or working class for it's new paradigm.

This campaign has been about power, revenge, and ego.

  155. Pogo/Rez: I just chalk it up to the fact that men and women are wired differently. Remember those Men/Women are from Venus/Mars books? There is some truth to that.

I believe that in most cases (there certainly are exceptions) men don't realize they are being insensitive. That is, they are not intentionally trying to demean or hurt someone's feelings.

I think women have similar difficulties with respect to the male ego. My husband and son have accused me of being quite insensitive in certain situations and I was completely mystified! LOL

Posted by: GAKaren Author Profile Page | May 19, 2008 2:04 PM

  156. With regard to the sweetie remark: That reporter should have put him in his place right then and there. But judging the way women act around Obama (giggling teenagers), I strongly doubt he even realizes that the remark may have been offensive. I think he is used to being swooned over.

I found his interrupting Michelle during the GMA interview (on more than one occasion), much more offensive than the sweetie remark.

ROFL, Rez. Have you heard that Chicano comic tell why he calls "his people" beaners? I thought I was going to fall on the floor. He "says" he got heckled by people yelling that they weren't "hispanics" or "latinos" -- so he said, "How about 'beaners'?" And they liked it.

I personally don't mind being called a "broad." Have always kind of thought of it as empowering.....and names spoken out of the public eye are one thing....

But "sweetie" used in the public reporter encounter was definitely a not so subtle put down. Overplayed now of course.

I read someplace that David Axelrod did some kind of an 'exciting' political, crowd scene for "The West Wing" (I believe it was) because someone at the show knew about Axelrod's expertise in such matters. No doubt the crowd for BO yesterday in Oregon was stunning, but don't forget, they stopped doing such events because it wasn't helping BO connect with voters. AND, since Iowa, he has many more people come to see him than vote for him. Let's hope that is still the case. P. Doesn't seem to ring very true now. Yet another BS Hannity accusation. I wonder if he'll even bring it up - Gordo, you listen to the enemy don't you? I expect a report back.

Karen, no doubt men and women are wired differently - and as for this man, there are times I'm very happy about that and times it drives me crazy. And in my experience, it's a whole lot easier for us men to be insensitive than it is for women.

So, Ivy, do you live in Tuscumbia or some other burg nearby, like Florence or Sheffield? I lived in Dothan for a year way back when. Used to love to go over to the house a couple of my friends lived in on a bluff over the TN River and just watch the boats go by.

For months now we knew Hillary could not win the pledged delegate count, could win the popular vote if you count MI and FL, and it would come down to the Supers and that's what is going to end this. Byrd could be the beginning and if the rest of them would follow and pick the candidate, like I said before it could end in the next few minutes. It does not have to drag out past tomorrow and Obama could celebrate all he wants. But if only a few announce then it continues another week.

I had a big boss when I worked at the Senseless(Census) that got slammed for calling some women on his staff (clerks) "gorgeous" on more than one occasion. You know it had to have been a habit. One wonders how a guy could have made it to a regional US govt office with that habit.

BTW; Beaner is a popular word here in WA with all the migrants here for the orchards. I heard it in use all the time when we lived inland WA.

Truly, I had buddy named Joe Chief. Not to swift a guy.
Needless to say after I took him to a rednek bar in OK (nearest available beer and pooltable). He was heaping praises on the friendly nature of the joint:

He told me later, everyone was so kind, knew him by name,
"Everytime I turned around someone said, hey Chief you want a beer". LOL

And wouldn't it be funny if behind the word blurb featured on Obama's trademark site of FAITHHOPECHANGE, is one reverand Wright, covered up by photoshop?

As for being an expert on foreign policy, listen to his inane exaggeration of Iraq being the cause of ALL THINGS. And this guy has the nerve to blast McCain's understanding of the Middle East?

His mistake is thinking that the TN Rep. party gives a sh*t about what he thinks, that he can draw a line between Michelle, who made those comments while campigning for him fuhchrissakes just because he thinks that's low class. And this is after his campaign has savaged Bill Clinton because of comments he made while campaigning for HIllary? Does he forget who he's going to be running against? Did he miss the Harold Ford Jr. campaign? Maybe that the independent voters don't like having a spouse criticized for stupid remarks? What in hell is he thinking? Does he know how to spell the word hypocrisy? I suspect that the Republicans will try and teach that to him.

  180. I'm not making a big deal about that, Bri. I'm pointing out the shift in direction from "follow the electorate" and "follow the vote in your district" or else you'll be stealing the nomination from Obama to "vote your own conscience" that has occurred among the Obama voters as SDs have voted against the popular vote in their states and districts. I've always said that the SDs should vote for the candidate they each think is best able to run against the Rep candidate regardless of what voters in their states and districts did - it's why they were created.

  181. The curious thing about the Byrd endorsement of Obama is how long it will take the Coulter's and Ingraham's to remind us of his clan connections.

Will Obama become the candidate of hate because the Nation of Islam and a former KKK have endorsed him?

Do the Republicans roll out their own former KKK and American Nazi Party endorsers to level the playing field?

  193. Bear, it will indeed be interesting to see how the Republican hate spewers will deal with that issue. I predict Coulter will deal with it in her usual sarcastic manner, and say that she now supports Obama without reservation without ever mentioning Byrd's klan connections from his youth - she'll likely let others make that connection because it can just as easily be turned on its head to support a message of reconciliation and inclusion. It's really a delicate issue because Byrd is not a racist, and his klan connections are pretty understandable in a perverse sort of way considering where he came from and the support he had to have to advance politically in his home county in the southern coalfields. They were certainly wrong - but politically that probably made sense to him at the time. He also, very rightly in my opinion, distanced himself from that affiliation probably 50 or more years ago (and in fact, supported Kennedy, I believe), so it isn't really exactly a hot topic.

  201. I understand the sentiments Craig, but there is a catch. There still IS the central claim of disingenuity about Obama, that he says one thing but associates with another. He now pivots to the center with flag pin and FaithHopeChange, yet has a record and history that doesn't square with this contrived image.

So forgive me if I find "Mr. Democrat" not only wearing the title for what I see as NeoLIberal, not "Democrat" but playing the same game Obama is. I guess what I am saying that is what is unforgivable is the reflection in what Bye Bye is doing and the name he now sports to what Obama and his supporters have done in the primary. They blasted the Clintons and called them Republican Lites using all sorts of deplorable tactics and special help from media. Now they want to make nice and sport a more mainstream demeanor even having Rice parrot the very comments that Hillary was blasted several weeks ago for making.

If I could stomach this, I could find some "forgiveness", but so far I see the continued Obama Speak leading to bad consequences for the country and for the Democrats. Perhaps Bye Bye should have picked another name, other than insulting those whose views represented the Democratic Party as recently as four years ago. Mr. Democrat? Have fun with that. I find is rather arrogant. It implies his views represent the Party and we all know what Bye Bye had to say.

Sorry, not Mr. Democrat to me.

  206. Thanks Tom. I spent a day in Paris and had the best apricot tort in my life. It was nearly orgasmic.

As for Maxtrue, I have a right to call myself whatever I want. The Democratic Party is a dynamic party, not one that's static like the Republicans. Like it or not, there's a new breeze coming into the party and that breeze is behind Barack Obama. Whereas most Obama supporters not only voted and supported Bill Clinton, we also recognize that you have to evolve.

It's pretty clear that you and a lot of other Clinton supporters are simply not open to the idea that as a party, we have to come together around what unites us rather than what divides us. Revenge doesn't help either of us. Holding onto old grudges (which if you think about it are not that old, just fresh) is non productive.

So I'm again going to try to do this. I'm willing to let go of anything I thought was wrong about the Clinton campaign. I'll remember that I've always like Paul Begala because he was as smarmy against Republicans as they were against Democrats. I won't remember the whole "eggheads and African Americans" remark. Why? Because if I have to sit at a table with either Paul or Ann Coulter, I've got Paul's back. He has a lifetime of working for the party. We've just been on different sides for a few months.

Look, I don't know a single person on this list personally. It's just as easy to go elsewhere and talk politics. But the Summer of Love idea made me have one of those "what are we doing?" moments. It's like you've been a puppet for the enemy and didn't realize it until you looked up and saw who was pulling the strings. The Republicans DELIGHT in seeing us fight, dig trenches and lob grenades at each other.

I'll still fight for my candidate, but I'm through lobbing grenades. You guys might not believe it, but I'd still rather have you on my side of the wall than the guys who love big oil, the rich and reckless world views.

Still, the radicals try and tar Hillary while Chicago papers refuse to correct stories that claim the Weatherman killed and injured NO ONE. Funny that Ayers contributed as a writer to the Tribune. This is more of the media and Far Left attack on Hillary with WAPO helping to lend weight.

I guess I feel we all have the ability of redemption. Of course "the proof is in the pudding", but in a world of increasing conflicts, wars and lack of civility, I feel we all need to try to meet others half way when someone makes the effort. 217. The Chickens Have Come Home to Roost

The Obama Campaign is beginning to self destruct before it even gets started. The chickens have indeed come home to roost for the radical left daily kos moveon.org mentality. They were bent on supporting Obama hell or high water; they totally ignored the fact that Senator Clinton was a far superior candidate.

The stupid radical left refused to forgive Hillary for her vote on the Iraq War, which contributed and allowed Obama to gain traction and win the Iowa Caucus and eventually on toward the nomination.

It had just been one sexist misogynist road trip to the nomination for Obama and all this false racist garbage leveled against Bill and Hillary Clinton simply to hold onto the super-delegates and sway the uncommitted ones to their side and create this mythical canard that if Obama is denied [I love the clever use of the word “denied” designed to create apathy in the African American community] that African Americans will stay home and not vote. The fact is it is not a denial of Obama; it is support of a better candidate, Hillary Clinton.

Obama has been nothing but divisive and subtly sexist from the beginning, make no mistake many woman like me are angry and upset, not only are we not going to vote for Obama, we are ready to bolt the Democratic Party and become Independents. The most significant of this may be Geraldine Ferraro who is angry and disgusted at the castigation from Obama and staff and the Democratic Party in general, she has already signaled that she will not vote for Obama who she justifiably claims is sexist, moreover may actually bolt the party which would be a huge bombshell, a former Democratic Vice President running mate of Walter Mondale would create tidal waves clear across the Democratic empire and have huge significance sending a signal to all dissatisfied Hillary supporters not to vote for Obama. Rumors are rife that Ms Ferraro may actually start Democrats for McCain movement; time will tell if that comes to fruition.

Women that support Hillary and are angry and upset at the treatment she has received need to unite and make our anger known via the vote, we need to flex our muscle to make the radical left sexists know we are to be respected. If we have to sacrifice for years with McCain so be it. It may indeed be better with McCain than on the job training with Obama cure for everything is tax increase just what an ailing economy needs and increase in taxes. Obama reminds one of the old wild west days of the traveling salesman, hey one and all are you sick, headache castor oil, constipated castor oil, the flu, castor oil, chicken pox, castor oil, allergy castor oil, measles, castor oil, only with Obama its taxes.

Another storm on the horizon looms for Obama a growing threat Mayor Bloomberg may not be far off endorsing Obama, if those two things come to pass Obama will not be able to hold New York, both Ferraro and Bloomberg are much beloved in New York and have considerable influence in New York.

The Chickens have come Home to Roost! Caveat Emptor.

  228. NIck, as a personal favor to Craig, I felt there should at least be a hypothetical path available I can offer is good faith. I cannot exclude the possbile however unlikely. For instance, if Obama gave an interview to Fox and recanted his false history and explained why he was forced into such a path to begin with, I would give him a lot of points. He could completely replace his foreign policy team as Reagan did his second term and reject many assocations he used to advance his career. He could call Pelosi Sweetie and have Michelle apologize for her past comments. He could swear he will not advance Patrick's career and place Liberman as our Iranian envoy. Hell he could pick Powel to Run and advocate the deal Reagan offered to Ford.

He would never do this, but it is theoretically possible. I think a dvorce from Michelle is more likely than what I described. The idea that some here think this is about THEIR petty games and campaign tactics is funny. They do not see how insulting this is. It was never about tactics, but about the substance which they concealed with media help and their tactics.

Again, the audacity of Bye Bye is par with Obama's campaign. A humbler username would have shown some class, which is obviously lacking in many Obama supporters. Mr. NeoLIberal would be more like it, or BuyThisFiction even better. I'm surpirsed Bye Bye didn't just go with FaithHopeChange.

  233. Just to be clear on my earlier remarks,

He is so focused on running on Iraq he fails to grasp that Arabic is not the language of Afghanistan. Obama claimed that our invasion of Iraq has caused a shortage of Arabic translators in Afghanistan. He is so set on being NOT BUSH, he can't come up with a single item Bush did right regarding Iran despite the NIE staring him in the face. The NIE concluded that Bush led sanctions forced Iran to {slow} the weaponization program. I say slow because A. the IC hasn't a clue where Iran is making their carbon based p-2 centrifuges, B. enrichment is part of ANY weapon program and C. the NIE concludes that despite the high probability they have stopped their most dangerous programs, Iran could still make a nuke because NOTHING can be certain. Did any of you catch this absurdity in the NIE Report? And recently, the very group that uncovered the Iranian nuclear program has identified a new Nuke Warhead facility conplete with quarters for NK scientist. Iran refuses to let the IAEA inspect it. Of course most experts DO believe that our invasion DID make Iran reconsider their program and Europeans ARE advocating we continue with sanctions despite Obama's spin that Europe stands behind HIS approach and should wait until Obama talks to Ahmdinejad one on one to clairify the Iranian position...LOL

I am glad so many concur with the rather obvious insult Bye Bye intended with his pick of a name. Another slap that can only harm Obama's chances more than Obama has harmed them himself.

She has man issues (Bubba and Mark Penn) and can't tell the truth to save her life (still dodging them there bullets in Bosnia). Ah, it's so nice to watch her campaign go down in flames. Posted by: Tan | May 19, 2008 6:31 PM

  243. Bye Bye, I have tried to present factual evidence. For instance, Obama called his own mother "conservative" in an effort to pander to white rural voters. Wasn't that a lie? Obama supporters call that a personal attack. If you find Obama stating our invasion of Iraq has prevented needed Arabic translators in Afghanistan, as true, then prove Afghanis speak Arabic.

I find it incredible that Obama supporters call vetting, lies and lies the truth. When the obvious reason Obama attacked Wright was because Wright attacked Obama's credibility not the actual statements, Obama supporters deflected. Even today, the 60s radicals that support Obama bring up lies about Hillary defending the Black Panthers. She did not defend them. Got that? Did WAPO correct their story? PEW says Americans are tired of the Press anointing Obama. Or is PEW lying too?

Did Obama suggest nuking Iran in 2004?

You see when Hillary supporters post the factual record we get slammed for making mean, personal attacks.

Your calling MY behavior similar to yours is another lie. Did Obama call Moss a great Reverend? But didn't Moss defend Wright's comments which Obama denounced? You seem to equate vetting of contradiction akin to sticking the knife in Hillary or comparing Clinton to Nixon. The Clinton's racists? You, a real Democrat? Lieberman is more of a Democrat.

You don't get it because you apply moral equivalency to apples and oranges, much the same way Obama's foreign policy team does. Power was a perfect example. Obama, the real creator of universal healthcare? Obama the one who will get OBL? You said yourself, yesterday we shouldn’t be so hard on Obama because we don't know what he will do until after he is elected. What nonsense is that? I'm sure Israel, the Sunnis in Lebanon and the Africans in Darfur just love that spin.

And when we blast Obama for wanting to raise the capital gains tax despite the evidence that this will lower revenue seriously, we are then called Republicans while Obama is free to pretend he is some kind of JFK. Why, because he cut a deal with Teddy and lifts JFK's words while emulating little of JFK?

Where the hell has Hillary done this? Had she done what Obama has done, the Press would have had her quartered and burned.

So spare me of your games of equivalency. That is exactly not how to bring Hillary supports back to the dysfunctional home. The first step in any addiction is to admit the addiction. Then would YOU would have to start taking a sober look at the record, the history, the policies put forward by your candidate and stop pretending that somehow YOU represent Democrats and that Obama is the centrist he now pretends. You only remind all that Obama said arrogantly an attack on him was an attack on the American people and their desire to elect him so HE can bring the change they hope for. What an incredible piece of Bullshit. This isn't personal Bye Bye, this is about the same kind of Bush Bullshit that left unvetted brought us the last eight years. Different labels but the same strategy.

Show me the beef and stop calling vetting, personal attacks. Do you really think Obama didn't know Rezko was being indicted when Obama got his help via Auchi's money to purchase his home? Obama should at least be honest and explain what we all know was true. Instead, he pretends he was ignorant. That is the real crime, his pretending. His pretending he didn't hear very nasty things from Wright. It is not so much what Wright even said, but the fools Obama takes us for.

Correct this problem and you’re on to something.

  246. I rather doubt told you to use the name Mr. Democrat. That was your arrogance, not our being unfair. Even Obama would have seen the fooly in that tactic. Come back with a different name and debate facts. That would be a start. I am not angry at outcomes, I am just angry that outcomes don't center around ration discourse over empiriical evidence. Make your case, not cheerlead or deflect. I told you Malley was trouble but Obama only moved to kick him out after Hamas became a hot issue, not because of inherent problems with Malley's thinking. Same is true for Power.

To others I suspect that Obama's response in SD was a bad move because it looked like Obama knew that ws his weakness. And again, I think Gordo shows that Obama's comments today is an effort to pre-empt another weakness.

Perhaps policy reconsiderations and a bit more honesty might thwart these time bombs. Just some friendly advice given in the spirit of the Summer of Love. Do you agree Mr. Democrat?

Or did he report it on his 2004,05, 06 taxes. What gives. This should be a simple explanation and not a 2000 word diatribe.

He doesn't threaten you. He doesn't have the "arrogance" that Obama has. I mean, the nerve of that black man challenging our white woman. What in the name of Geraldine Ferraro is happening? But Harold, he's so nice. Never seems to have any ambition. He's a nicer version of Obama. Not a meanie. It was Obama that acted like he was color-blind and such an intellegent an unassuming guy. Didn't you see Carlos last night. "You gotta elect Obama, he;s the whitest black we can give you". Your comment doesn't make sense. Maybe you missed his SD speech.

Many support Ford Jr. however, despite some conservative ideas because he is strong on national defense and security and has a record of saying what he thinks even if it is to support gun rights and religion. You get a sense that he didn't simply BECOME a NeolIberal because that was the cool thing to do. He stuck by his principles and has done so for many years. He didn't like the people on the Left Obama hung out with. How dare a Black man not quote Malcolm X or ask for reparations. Either did Powel.

So you are accusing us of wanting an Uncle Tom, a mindless Zombie, a nice controllable Black person, but that is bullshit and it won't fly. Obama is Left of mainstream Liberal. He makes his closest friends with those he must distance himself. His problem has nothing to do with color. He has to pretend about his past. But you continue to frame you Uncle Tom, Don't dare question a woman BS. Be happy with that.

You two shouldn't fight over something as transitory as an individual politician. I think you're kindred spirits. I definitely like both of you a lot -- and I'm sure others here do as well.

That's the problem with this online crap. It's all so abstract and detached that people unleash their emotions without considering the totality of the very real human being they are targeting.

People here have thrown around the world "cruel" to describe some of the worst behavior on this site. But honestly, I've seen (and participated in) some pretty shitty interpersonal behavior here -- but very little of which I would categorize as "cruel." Simply trashing a politician that someone else supports, for example, is not "cruel," at least not in my book.

For online "cruelty", I would refer you to the monsters who recently hacked into epilepsy support-group sites and posted fake links to other sites that had flashing lights and sounds designed to induce epileptic seizures for anyone who clicked on them. Now THAT is cruel.

Nothing that's ever been posted here compares. At least nothing that I've seen.

In fact, I'm the aunt of three...who were adopted by my sister. I think the difference between us may be simply one of personality. I react slowly...as a rule. The one time my first husband grabbed me by the shoulders in anger and started to shake me, though, I was out the door (barefoot in the snow in Des Moines, IA) so fast it shocked even me. Still, it was for him an abusive moment...not a pattern. He never touched me in anger again. Anyway, I'll read your book and try looking through your eyes.

  291. Rez, if that is your story, then you obviously didn't read the facts. Maybe the totally absurdity of Rezko's Wife buying the small plot for no apparent reason should cast some doubt on your story. I will let Gordo quote the credible sources, but the facts remain that both purchases happened at the same time.

If you buy your story, I have a plot of land to sell you too.

Here is some info to consider,

    http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/03/obama_rezko_purchase.php

And it shold be noted that the Rezkos were in financial trouble and that Obama knew that Auchi was the source of Rezko loans. The Rita diversion is made clear above. The simlutaneous purchase as well as the lack of credible evidence for the other small lot bid makes the face value of the story rather dubious.

  292. "Anyway, I'll read your book and try looking through your eyes. "

Now harbor -- keep in mind that the book is fiction....and about a shelter counselor who happens to be psychic, and starts to murder the abusers with her mind!

I personally have never been involved in a physically abusive relationship. I only came close once. And it wasn't with my husband but a man I was engaged to. I did what any thinking liberal Democratic woman would do under the circumstances. I picked up my rifle and told him he was as good as dead if he wasn't gone by the count of three.

I had written a Harlequin romance (you may all stop laughing right now!) that was loosely based on my notion of what the Gatlin Brothers would be like. 294. Patsi: In reading posts since I had to leave earlier today, I ran across your excellent post about verbal abuse. It's been my observation that many people do not recognize the damage that can be caused by verbal abuse -- like physical abuse it can be carried forward from generation to generation and the perpetrator is often astonishingly ignorant about the harm being inflicted. One benefit of the 24-hour news cycle, cable TV, and the daytime talk shows is that I think we are all gradually becoming more aware of the lasting damage that can be inflicted by bullying tactics ... whether from a parent, a friend, or a significant other.

  303. So Max, I pointed out the same day sale.

"Obama knew that Auchi was the source of Rezko loans"
    Bullshit, where's that stated?

    From you link;

"There is no sure evidence that the house deal was worse than bone-headed. Not that the question has been put to rest. A number of unanswered questions remain.

For instance, it's unclear whether Rezko was actually doing a favor for Obama: whether Obama could not have bought the house otherwise or whether Obama derived a financial benefit from Rezko's involvement in the deal. The main suspicion has been that Rezko's purchase of the side yard at the seller's asking price allowed Obama's purchase of the house to go through since the seller insisted on closing both properties on the same day. But both Obama and Rezko have said that someone else had bid on the side yard, raising the bidding to the asking price. If that's the case, then Obama could have bought the house without Rezko's involvement.

And then there's the other big question, whether Obama ever did anything for Rezko in return for his purchase of the side yard or all those contributions. Obama has said that Rezko "never asked me for anything" and "I’ve never done any favors for him.” No substantial evidence has surfaced to contradict that claim."

Where's the illegality in any of this?

Contribution? Nothing improper. The Clinton has much more illegal contribution baggage than Obama.

I thought you were only going to argue facts and no allegations, innuendo and insinuations!

One of my chief problems with Sen Obama is that his record seems no more free of questionable deals and tactics than any other politician, and yet he positions himself as a nonpolitician.

  305. Hey
    Look at this.

Do you need help to repair your abusive relationship?

    http://www.recovery-man.com/abusive/abusive.htm
    A few tidbits
"These relationships cannot be changed from one side, it takes mutual honesty, openness and willingness from both parties to work through these issues. Group therapy is highly recommended for abusers, as it helps them to break through the denial that is generally a part of the abusive patterns. (People in denial generally recognize their own dysfunctional behavior in others more easily than in themselves.) "

"If the abuser is unwilling to own their behavior and seek help the prudent course of action is to remove yourself totally from the situation. This is painful, but is generally safer and ultimately better for both parties than allowing the cycle of abuse to continue. Be prepared for the abuse to increase after you leave - stepping out of the cycle enrages the abuser, as it shatters their illusion of control"

"These relationships cannot be changed from one side. Remember that by staying you are condoning and enabling the abuse - and helping your partner to stay sick. If your partner is unwilling to get help the only safe course of action is to totally remove yourself from the situation and seek help on your own."

  307. Rezdog: A careful reading of the numerous articles in Chicago newspapers vis a vis Rezko's relationship with Sen Obama does reveal that Sen Obama has written at least two letters to Illinois public agencies in support of Rezko. Sen Obama has stated that these letter are no more than what any legislator would do for any constituent. Others are not so certain.
The fact that Sen Obama appears to have no paper trail from his time as a State Senator makes it difficult to determine the details of the relationship. We do know, however, that it certainly amounted to more than the five hours of legal work Sen Obama claimed in that infamous debate, wherein he attacked Sen Clinton for being on the board of Wal-Mart two days after his own wife had resigned from the board of a company whose chief customer was Wal-Mart.
No one is suggesting that Sen Obama is corrupt -- at least I am not -- only that he is not the paragon of wisdom and good judgment he believes himself to be.

Posted by: maggisd Author Profile Page | May 19, 2008 9:03 PM

  309. Maggisd,

"has written at least two letters to Illinois public agencies in support of Rezko."- Maggisd

    From the Muckracker article.

(The Chicago Sun-Times did dig up letters from Obama in 1998, some seven years before the house sale, urging Illinois and Chicago officials to provide funding for a Rezko company to build apartments for senior citizens, but both Obama and Rezko denied that Rezko had asked Obama to write the letters, and there's no evidence to the contrary.)

  316. Rezdog: It is now an established fact that Sen Obama's relationship with Rezko went back approximately 20 years. I do not intend to suggest that Sen Obama is any more corrupt than your average politician. What does bother me is that he has built his career on insisting that his opponents open up files and provide all sorts of information while asserting that he cannot do the same because, unfortunately, he just didn't keep any of his papers.

So, he has no papers from his State Senate career, he had no idea that Rezko was a man with questionable associations, he never heard Rev Wright make statements that would have caused him to leave TUCC (as Oprah did), he has no problem with Wm Ayers because all his criminal activities happened 40 years ago, etc, etc. Does this make Sen Obama a bad man? No...it just makes him a politician with a gift for rhetoric and judgment no better than anyone else.

    Posted by: sturgeone | May 19, 2008 9:24 PM

  318. Rezdog: If the house deal was evidence of a corrupt deal, I don't see it. IMHO it was evidence of a relationship that was far closer than Sen Obama has been willing to admit. On the face of it, Sen Obama wanted that house and he also wanted that small strip of land so he could access his home and make it private from the street. He couldn't afford both properties. He brought his close friend along to see it and a favor was done for a friend.
My concern is not the deal, it is the relationship.

  326. Rez,

Obama himself said he thought Rezko helped out on the plot of land in a purchase he never made a profit on because Rezko thought he might get some Quid pro quo. He was heading to court and I find Obama's remarks somewhat cold.

"Obama has acknowleged, however, that Rezko's likely motivation for buying the lot was to curry favor with him. Rezko reportedly admitted as much to his business associates. And as The New York Times reports today, Rezko was so heavily in debt at the time he purchased the lot that he did it under his wife's name in order to protect it from creditors."

Now we know Auchi had sent Rezko more than 3 million to help bail him out. Given the dire situation Rezko was in and the shell game he was playing with using his wife, is it really a stretch that Obama knew none of this? And given all the help Obama recieved from Rezko, the way he has subsequently has the air of throwing someone under the bus. There is evidence that Obama certainly knew Auchi was a backer of Rezko for years and a number of transactions invloving alot of real estate had come before Obama. The point is that it is fact, Obama knew of the Auchi sources of Rezko monies. He MOST LIKELY KNEW Rezko was in deep shit. Can we rely on Obama to admit he knew Rezko had just recieved the latest installment from Auchi?? Well, at first Obama couldn't even remember he had told Rezko about the property in the first place. He had trouble recollecting that Rezko and Obama together visited the site. Are you really suggesting that a strung out Rezko under indictment did all this for no profit without Obama having a clue of the situation Rezko was in? Who are you kidding?

I never said Obama has done something criminal in this case. It actually seems like Obama got what he wanted and Rezko got nothing using Auchi's money to assist Obama. Maybe he hoped for something he has yet to recieve as he waits for a verdict in his trial. Or maybe Rezko has received quid pro quo, but the record from Chicago has hardly been vetted. Even when asked about this case, Obama gace at least three different answers to simple questions. There are many more questions to answer before any reasonable criteria of "vetting" has been accomplished. We do know the Chicago gutter surpasses even the Wahshington one, and Republicans and Democrats have closed rank on keeping it all quiet.

    Or do you disagree?

  333. Max,

There is no "real' evidence that Obama knew much about Auchi, his involvement with Rezko, or Rezko's finances. The house deal happened in 1/05 when Rezko was being looked at, but Rezko wasn't indicted until 10/06. IMO, there is no correlation between the two events.

Obviously Rezko was hurting from 2005 on and Auchi bailed him out with a mortgage on the pizza biz. That enabled Rezko to assist Obama. No doubt Rezko embellished his relationship to others and probably thought more of it himself, but people do that and that's not Obama's problem. I may be as gullible as you are suspicious. I would not want you on my jury.

About the only thing on this specific issue that we agree is that Chicago politics and the business world has never been a clean environment.

I'm not going to bring this Rezko assisted house deal up again. We've beat it to death. If you want to insist Rezko is responsible for Obama purchasing his home based upon what we know today, then go ahead. Personally, I just think it goes to your credibility.

"Whatever Mr. Obama claims, Mrs. Clinton made it clear she is not buying it.

She warned Mr. Obama or his supporters against claiming the nomination based on winning a majority of pledged delegates or some other yardstick before the final primaries on June 3 and before the fate of the Michigan and Florida delegations are settled.

“I’m going to make my case and I’m going to make it until I’m the nominee and we’re not going to have one today and we’re not going to have one tomorrow and we’re not going to have one the next day,” she said. “And if Kentucky turns out tomorrow, I will be closer to that nomination.”
