Obama’s Crowded Bus

| | Comments (347)

Barack Obama is a politician after all. He has shown little reluctance to throw his political patrons under the bus:

Tony Resko is a “boneheaded mistake.”

William Ayers is a “flimsy relationship.”

Jeremiah Wright is an “outrage.”

Even his grandmother is a “typical white woman.”

  1. Father Pfleger & Rev. James Meeks: Who They Really Are

"Why does Barack align himself with so many radical religious leaders? Besides Rev. Wright, there are Father Michael Pfleger, closely associated with Wright and Farrakhan, and Rev. James Meeks, also close to Obama’s spiritual advisers.

Each of these men have been listed by Barack’s campaign as religious advisers. So we are not talking about merely constituents who support Barack. We are talking about people that Barack has invited to be a part of his campaign.

To date, the only reason that Barack Obama hasn’t had to hold press conferences about his longtime relationships with these extremists is that the MSM hasn’t latched on to his associations.

Most Democrats who see these videos and hear about these extremists’ beliefs are aghast, and a sufficient minority of Democrats are so shocked that they realize that they cannot vote for Barack Obama in a general election, given these relationships.

All Republicans who see these videos realize one thing: That Barack Obama cannot, and will not, win the presidency, and that John McCain will be POTUS 44.

  3. God damn Craig I hope by now you're on the Clinton payroll. And the "typical white woman" remark way over the top. You're about as unbiased as Faux is "fair and balanced". It's a given that all politicians have baggage, but if one went by your accounting one could be led to believe that Hillary sprung fourth pristine and almost virginal ready to assume the mantle of power.

  4. "under the bus:" OR I thought this was cute!

    http://blacksnob.blogspot.com/2008/05/im-throwing-under-bus-under-bus.html

While watching "Hardball" last night the cliche speedometer on the idiomatic phrase "Under the Bus" officially hit 5 million so I feel I can no longer use the phrase in good conscious due to the sheer laziness surrounding its overuse.

But I need something to describe that "throw ___ under the bus" feeling so, what euphemism can I start using in it's place?

Any ideas? I'm going to toss out a few at random.

Replacements for "Under the Bus," por ejemplo:

    A) Into the wood chipper (a nod to "Fargo")

    B) Off the monorail (a nod to an episode of "The Simpsons")

    C) Into the meat-grinder

    D) Shot in the face

    E) Throat-throttled

    F) Put the mace to the face

    G) Belichicked (I was trying to think of sports analogies, this doesn't work but maybe someone thinks differently)

    H) Into the rudder

    I) Into the turbine

    J) Pulled a Drive-by

    K) Shoved into the Subway

    L) Pushed onto the tracks

    M) Bum-rolled

    N) "went all Steve Seagal"

  5. I think Obama sees most of us as 'typical' something. I wonder what Michelle is typical of? Rev Wright is probably typical of someone who has been dumped by a beloved follower who no longer needs him -
Wright is challenging him to show he hasn 't been using him and his church all these years. Craig Crawford is typical of a journalist who isn't enamored of a seemingly innocent young man who spouts the same old rhetoric he says he is against. Craig Crawford is typical of what most of us have always thought journalists wanted to be. MSNBC is typical of
the hyperbole we have come to recognize as Hollywood's version of low-level rabble-rousers.
What kind of REAL evidence does anyone have that Obama can and will do as he promises? Nothing but "hope", and that can not be deposited into your bank account. Craig hit the nail on the head.

    Ducking sniper fire in Bosnia

    Mark Penn

Bill Clinton paid 800 grand to loby on behalf on trade deals

She didn't know about the FALN pardons

She didn't know that her brothers were being paid to get pardons that Clinton granted.

She didn't know that the Peter Paul fundraiser in Hollywood in 2000 cost $700,000 more than she reported it had.

She opposed NAFTA at the time.

She was instrumental in the Irish peace process.

She had nothing to do with the New Square Hasidic pardons (after they voted for her 1,400-12 and she attended a meeting at the White House about the pardons).

She negotiated for the release of refugees in Macedonia (who were released the day before she got there).

She said that Chelsea, her daughter, was jogging around the towers of the World Trade Center on 9/11 and [Hillary] went on the "Today" show ... and she said [Chelsea] was only saved because she ducked into a coffee shop at the last minute and she actually heard the airplane hit the building. Chelsea wrote 4 months later she was home in bed sleeping on 9/11 when the first plane hit the WTC

    Wright is Wright, not Obama.
What Wright says is meaningless regarding a possible Obama presidency.
Hillary recently said she would "obliterate" Iran if Iran attacked Israel. That has me way more upset than a South Side preacher who has earned the right to say whatever he feels he wants to say.
Reality and talent shows on TV command a thousand times more attention than a candidate who is already threatening to nuke Iran.
I am a TV sports-nut but I keep it in its place---it means NOTHING compared to crazy people running for President of the United States.
McCain thinks we Americans are OK with US troops in peace-keeping and occupation roles all over the world...he says it all the time, and yes, that is indeed what his "hundred year" answer was all about. Well, we ARE NOT OK with it! We are sick of what a great speaker once called " the US being the goddam policeman of the world!". To hell with McCain and unless Hillary backs off her threat/pledge to obliterate Iran, she will lose my vote if she is nominated.

Posted by: EuroTom Author Profile Page | May 1, 2008 5:11 AM

  24. Craig,

The most striking realization about Obama, now exposed to Americans,
is clear in your first sentence. "Barack Obama is a politician after all."

Since his entire rise to fame has been based on the fact that Obama was,
supposedly, a whole new creature--the UN-POLITICIAN-POLITICIAN, uncovering Obama's true character is nothing less than catastrophic to the Obama campaign. How many more mentors, relatives and acquaintances
will Obama toss "under the bus" before he's finished? The body count is
    rising.

Craig, just a note--Hillary was interviewed on O'Rielly today and I thought she managed to charm him!
    What did you think?

I watched in gleeful disbelief as Mrs. Clinton navigated O'Rielly's land mines.
Not only did she look presidential, she looked girly in pink. She appeared
relaxed and playful. Did you watch the show?

I think it was a masterful decision by the Clinton campaign to organize an interview on Bill O'Rielly. On shows like this, Hillary can reach many Reagan democrats and independents.

If anyone missed Hillary on O'Rielly, the interview will continue Thursday..

  25. I'm hearing from Hill-rat friends that Obama's superdelegates who have competitive districts are having some nervous days. The NRCCC is running negative ads in special elections in MS tying the DEM candidate to Obama. MS 01 which some had thought to be a possible DEM pick-up since it one was a DEM seat (Whitten) is now likely GOP because of the Obama+Childer ads.

Craig -- What do you think? Are the people with close races getting a little nervous about Obama's effect on downticket races in red states?

Jeremiah Wright, "Barack Obama likes to present himself like he's some superhero, but he's still stuck in the phone booth. If he can't deal with the rantings of Rev. Wright, then how can he stand up to Al Queda?"

  28. Hillary's response about "obliterating" Iran was in answer to "What if Iran attacked Israel with a nuclear device?" Does anyone believe that Iran's setting off a nuclear device in Israel would be met with anything other than obliteration by either Bush2, Hillary, McCain, or even Obama?

I like the 'chipper' metaphor. It can work a couple of ways with your original meaning of tossing someone into the wood chipper. But there's an alternative, as well. Like, Mr Obama looked chipper this morning as he spoke about Rev Wright.

  34. Rez...loved your hilarious post early this a.m. about getting rid of the "thrown under the bus" cliche and replacing it with someone else. I actually like "threw into the woodchipper" best.

I'm sick of people getting thrown under buses as well. The other day, I looked up its origins and found out that part of the phrase's meaning comes from the idea of the bus representing "mass society" or "public opinion." In that sense, it's like throwing someone "to the wolves," according to one site I was reading. So whatever replacement phrase we come up with might need to replicate that aspect as well. Not sure a wood-chipper does the trick, as vivid as it is and as much as I love it.

For now, I'll revert to another cliche as a stopgap: "He kicked him to the curb." I kind of like that one. It's a cliche, no doubt...but not as worn out as "thrown under the bus."

It is even less impressive when considering how poorly he will do in the general when the GOP goes after him. Even KO won't be able to deflect them. Eventually, they may be the ones who throw Obama under the bus, as they do like to build people up & tear 'em down, again. I think most of the super-Ds are waiting until after all the primaries are done (6/3) before announcing who they support.

Within a couple of weeks he'll probably have more than H.

    Obama: Pledge 1490, super-D 244, total = 1734
    Clinton: Pledge 1334, super-D 266, total = 1600

Obama has been picking 2-3 super-Ds for every one Hillary gets.

Hillary would need to win 70% of the pledge delegates from the remaining primaries to catch up with Obama. Most experts say this is highly unlikely.

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | May 1, 2008 8:51 AM

  56. Hillary's only chance now is to orchestrate some kind of DNC deal where MI and FL pledge delegates would be added in a way that she ends up with more than Obama. We'll see if Harold Ickes can pull that rabbit out of his hat.

But then she'd still have to convince the remaining super-Ds that she is the best candidate. Not an easy thing to do, given her disorganized and dirty campaign. If they give her the nomination they can forget about the black vote which is always key to Dem victories.

All that said, SD counts at this point are nothing but estimates - I was just trying to clarify what WaPo was talking about. The discussion made it clear that there was confusion about that. The total difference in SDs between the candidates from the 2 sources (which are close at any rate) is 1, and the difference in pledged and total delegates between the 2 sources is 3.

Could she and Nancy Pelosi TRY any harder to alienate the Clinton supporters that they will need in the fall if Obama is the nominee? In the WSJ yesterday McCaskill inferred that the Superdelegates have made their decisions (for Obama)—they are just waiting to announce. Why even have the votes in North Carolina, Indiana, Oregon, Kentucky, West Virginia etc.? Claire really thinks she is something else...a real power player. She is going to tell the voters that its all over whether they like it or not.

And, it very well may be. My point: How is this helping getting the blocs Obama doesn't yet have? When is he going to TRY and reach out to those blocs? And why not let the voters in these remaining states have their say? It's just kooky to me.

Not many people mention the "dream team" ticket anymore, but I still think it would be a good thing. Of course Patsi was in favor of Harold Ford, Jr, and I think he'd be a refreshing face on the national scene.

The latest info I have read is that Obama supporters are more likely to support Hillary if she is the nominee than Hillary supporters are to support Obama if HE is the nominee. I will support the Democrat.

Oh and Happy May Day !! It's national holiday here in Belgium. Tomorrow is also national holiday, I think it's ascension or something. I am opening my station from 7 - 11 am so people can buy their newspapers. Normally I'd be closed.

A while back an unnamed person insulted me for running a gas station. I didn't respond well then, and it's after the fact, but I want to say.. I am a business owner, I employ people, I pay salaries, taxes, handle merchandising, buying, advertising, support community events, and provide a service. If anyone wants to challenge my worthiness doing such things, go ahead. I think I am doing fine.

Oh yeah, there is an anti-American bias via USA education so even with a Master's Degree in Public Administration, the doors to the EU or other institutions were pretty much closed. I have done what is necessary to legally live in Europe and make a living for myself and for my retirement. I dare anyone who wants to criticize to try moving to Europe and set themselves up and see how it goes. :-) Oh yeah and I graduated from one of the highest regarded regional public liberal arts colleges in the country... The Evergreen State College. I was never going to mention this again, but that attack was below the belt... I could go on attack against that person's profession too, but what would be the point?

Sorry for the rant, back to our regularly scheduled fighting :)

    3) Did you read the Doris Day piece (with slideshow) on the Vanity Fair site? It's distilled from what seems like a first rate new biography of her.

But mainly, having read this thread -- Dexter -- surely you listened to what Hillary Clinton actually said re: nukes. She SAID she would respond with nuclear power if Iran nuked Israel. As Sturge pointed out, I can't think of any president who wouldn't have to respond quickly and massivily if Israel was under nuclear attack.

BUT THEN she reminded anyone listening of the DIFFERENCE in our nuclear power and Iran's. We DO have the capability of obliterating that country. She was very clear in saying that we COULD obliterate them.

And yes, a smaller nation with a couple of nukes does need reminded that this is a game they don't want to play.

  77. Ally, you should probably direct that question to McCaskill and Pelosi and to Obamians; we Clintonistas have no power to change their short sighted actions - as for me, the short answer is no. I was glad she defeated Talent to make his MO senate seat a dem one, but that doesn't do anything for me wrt her opinion about Obama. And yes, considering her 2 years in the senate (not even) she does have an inflated view of herself IMHO. "Hillary recently said she would "obliterate" Iran if Iran attacked Israel."

She said she would "obliterate" Iran if it used nuclear weapons against its neighbors ... big difference.

She was talking about a way to encourage Iran and its neighbors not to develop nuclear delivery systems by providing the umbrella of US protection similar to the mutual deterrence that existed between the US and USSR.

Now if you want to be against that, fine, but get it right.

Either most of the “pundits” are stupid or they are in it. There are some prevailing questions in leading up to the "divorce" between the Rev and Sen Obama. After the painful PA lost, pundits have been saying that the Wright controversy is one of the reasons for the loss. That Sen Obama has to distance himself from the Rev to improve his poll rating among Democrats and Independents. But how??? So what happens is interesting. A week before the IN and NC primary, for UNEXPLAINED reason, the Rev resurfaces. For two days, he makes a string of appearances/speeches to defend himself and spew the same sermon he did in the pew.++++ This NOW gives Sen Obama a chance to condemn and “TOTALLY and “COMPLETELY” break his relationship from the Rev, something he failed to do in his first speech. Then Rev Wright now disappears and goes back in seclusion. Sen Obama now can put his controversial pastor behind him and have a clean break. This way, he can convince the electorate and more importantly the Superdelegates to throw their support to him. +++++++++The uneasiness in me keeps asking was it a real divorce or just a political charade???

As i said yesterday I think Obama was most pissed at Wright for calling him a politician lol.

What I see happening to Obama in all the conections you cited is his inability to define himself and he has let others frame the question.

Example : Ayers. Instead of "how can you be friends with that bomb throwing radical", change the subject to having been proud to serve on the board of the Woods Fund that did so much for the Southside of Chicago.

Instead of abandoning Wright with unbelievable statements of " I wasn't there" , "I didn't know" , defend him.
He is defendable and the fact that the sound bite snippits totally misrepresent the sermons gives him a lever to return the attack.
As it is it looks as if Obama has no moral backbone.

All of this is from one problem that Obama has. He is too inexperienced and it is starting to show.

  116. One of the things that has been cited in reviews of both of Senator Obama's memoirs is the notion of identity.

In the first it is a search for it.

In the second there is a declaration of it -- like an idea, a concept, a program.

The quotes that Craig has cited have been on more than a few peoples' minds for awhile... as they keep on amplifying concerns those books raised.

For all the writing, for all the claims that his persona is a transformative event for the nation...

Senator Barack Obama doesn't know himself terribly well.

He knows his idea of himself. He should: he created it.

But one's self is never a quotable idea, however complex.

A self is more complicated and difficult than a persona.

In the end... he is saying, "I didn't know" way too much.

To not know Rev. Wright, Rezko, Ayres, etc., might be revealing that Barack Obama is nearer to who he was at 20 than he'd like to admit --

Because as a writer I know we do not meet ourselves on paper or in comfortable circumstances.

We might ourselves in conflict, trouble, confrontation, challenge, failure and our betrayals whether of ourselves, our principles or of others.

My daughter's eight year old half-brother is a very interesting and talent kid.

And his most frequent phrase when confronted with anything is, "Oh, really? I didn't know!"... followed most often by "It's not my fault!"

I'd feel better about him (and the country) if instead of saying "I didn't know" or somehow diminishing his connection to the people cited in Craig's post, he would say, "I used poor judgment. I was ignoring or justifying a lot of what I heard and saw in these people."

Unfortunately that would invalidate his major claim on the Presidency... his judgement...

Because, as a citizen, he was opposed to the Iraq War.

Which makes him as qualified to be the next President as virtually everyone who shows up on this blog from its founding to the present.

There's enough that's disturbing about all three candidates.

But this one... such naivete is not an innocent thing but a willful habit.

The point is that black Democrats are justified in not voting for Clinton in the general election, due to her racism, but women Democrats have no justification for not voting for Obama because he has NOT played the "gender" card.

KAOS was good but I got tired of the new students coming in and feeling "oppressed" because we station managers had a job to do to uphold the viability of the station and maintain our FCC license.

I studied Political Economy and Social Change, Washington State History, Popular Culture and Folklore, a few other courses and then the MPA program.

I did get tired of the whole "white guilt" atmosphere there. The far left is just as oppressive as the far right. After a while I had a chance to move and I took it.

  127. Since he has not run a sexist campaign, it's reasonable to assume the reason would be race, especially since the Clintons have encouraged that sort of thinking.

There you go again Nash. I will argue that the blacks who abandoned the most African-American Presidency in history are the ones who are racist. They jumped ship for a candidate because he is 1/2 black. Talk about racism !!

Oh wait, I forgot, Blacks and other ethnic minorities cannot be racist. Only whites can because power + prejudice = racism and peeps of color do not have the power.

glad that was cleared up for me... I carry it with my white guilt always.

How about running a dishonest campaign accusing the Clintons of being racist when they weren't at all? "That sort of thinking" has existed only in the minds of biased media reports and gullible Obama supporters.

  136. The bitter truth:

"Hillary Clinton leads Barack Obama in the popular vote, and this is her path to victory.

She will ultimately win the Democratic nomination by convincing the superdelegates that her popular vote lead makes it legitimate for them to support her. It gives them the cover they need to deny Obama a nomination that he otherwise would have won.

    What’s wrong with this picture?

First, Clinton does not lead Obama in the popular vote. It is a fantasy.

Second, the people she most needs to convince that this fantasy is true are the people least likely to believe it."

  137. By the time the General election arrives Obama will look like a character from a Charles Dickens tale. I can see it now,..... Michelle with whip in hand, stands over the poor broken Obama shouting, "get up,.... GET UP, there's nothing wrong with you, you sniveling wimp", while the poor, broken, sniveling Obama tries desperately to disavow another long time friend and associate. No longer strong enough himself to throw them under the bus, he must now rely on his belle Michelle to handle the disposal........and another one bites the dust

  139. renee, ET, see, in the minds of some Obama supporters, ONLY "cards" matter. Experience and things such as that don't count - it's not what they've based their support of their candidate on. Actually, in my mind, anyone who thinks Bill Clinton or Hillary Clinton is racist is a f*cking idiot on that issue.

I organized my CDs a few weeks ago - alphabetically, by artist and by household memeber (Holiday and Classical (by composer) given their own sections in the organizers). Maybe Obama did the same thing in Chicago communities.

  143. BHO has some issues with his relationships...perhaps the early abandonment he experienced as a child, his conflicted issues with race, have left him with a poor sense of judgement. We know that HRC could never please her father, thus her workhorse mentality. JMc used to hold his breath as a child when angry and his parents would put him in ice water, a clue to the early source of his anger issues. Sure a conflicted group of Senators. I hope we see a Czar of Mental Health in the next Presidental cabinet or this issue is seriously addressed with a National Health care plan.

You have not answered my question.
Why are the black women who vote for a black man also not racists? Why in your eyes are the 68% white HRC voters in PA racists, but the 92% BHO black voters not racists?
